SALVADOR (1986) Grade: B-
Its a good story, little long, preachy, but shot well. It was Oliver Stone behind the camera. Story still moves a good pace. The ending is pretty heartbreaking even though the film had plenty of levity.

Of course the wildman portrait of Sir James Ross, the pinup of polar exploration, is a gift to us Cold Boys girlies but I need to speak up. I simply must.
Sir James Clark Ross C.1847-1848 is - and I will die on this hill - actually prime JCR.

Prompt 19 - Determination
@wolfstarmicrofic August 19, word count 773
Previous part First Jegulus part
The bath was lobster hot, just the way Sirius liked it. His porcelain skin turned bright red as he sunk into the water. He splashed some of the water onto his face to remove the tear tracks and let Remus’s soft words gently lull his swirling thoughts into nothingness as he read Call of the Wild by Jack London to him from on top of the wooden laundry box. It was Sirius’s favourite book. He read it a lot as a child. He saw himself in Buck, being a sweet dog who was ground down and nearly killed by horrid people until he found a kind trio of people and was finally free. Luckily, the Potters weren’t murdered, unlike Buck’s friends, and he hadn't run off into the forest to live like a wildman, not that he hadn't thought about it, but something about the story of the giant bear-sized dog resonated with him.
In the morning, Remus agreed to ride in the sidecar of Sirius’s motorbike after fixing him breakfast. Remus hated the bike with a passion, so his agreeing to go in it showed Sirius how much he was willing to do to cheer him up.
When they pulled into the long gravel drive of Effie and Monty’s house, the emotions and hurt from yesterday began pushing to the front of his mind again. He needed an Effie hug. He parked his motorbike beside the 500 and hopped off, holding out his hand to help Remus get his long body out of the tiny sidecar.
Effie was waiting for him at the door with her arms wide open. He flung himself into her soft embrace and felt the tears slipping from his eyes again.
"Mum," He cried.
“Shh, my darling, shhh, don’t worry, we’ll get it sorted,” Effie cooed and walked him into the house where Monty was just putting the finishing touches to mugs of hot chocolate. Effie deposited him on one of the kitchen chairs and pulled hers up close so she could continue to hold him. He used the back of his hand to wipe away the tears and realised there were others at the table.
Regulus and James sat opposite them. Sirius choked back a sob as his eyes darted to Effie. “Remus, messaged us all last night, my darling, telling us what that awful man had put up,” He looked at his brother and James and sniffled at them, trying his hardest to smile at them for coming.
“Erm, I have something to confess,” James said sheepishly, dropping his head so he couldn’t make eye contact. “I knew about the videos, and there are other people that have filmed you,” He looked up then and met Sirius’s eyes, “I’m sorry I didn’t tell you. I honestly thought they were just a bit of fun. I didn’t even see the ones where he’d gone into the back. If I had, I would have told you, I swear,” Sirius gritted his teeth, ready to spit something venomous out, but he couldn’t. He could admit that some of them had been slightly funny. When he had a go at that student trying to blame them for missing his exam, that was good, but the stuff between him and Regulus, there was a line, and it had been crossed.
“Give me your phones,” Remus ordered, holding his hands out to everyone. “Monty, Effie, you’re about to join the world of tictok,”
“What are you going to do?” Sirius asked, handing his phone over without a second thought.
“I’m going to report every single video I find of you or our cafĂ© on all of our phones,” With much scrabbling, everyone handed their phones over.
“I’ve already got tictok, so you won’t have to download it,” Monty smiled, unlocking his phone for Remus.
“Oh, so do I,” Effie laughed, “Here you go my love,” She said to Remus as she placed her phone beside Monty’s.
Remus had a determination about him that Sirius had never seen. He sat there at the Potters’ kitchen table with all six phones and reported every single video of Sirius or the cafĂ© he could find. Sirius had been hurt and Remus was protecting him. Sirius felt a surge of love for his lanky boyfriend. He pushed his chair back and leant across the table, grabbing the front of Remus’s knitted jumper and dragging him to meet him before planting a hard, love-filled kiss on his lips.
“Thank you,” He murmured to Remus, and Remus’s golden, honey eyes became molten and burned into Sirius’s and, for the first time that morning, he wished they were alone.

Weremayhem: Song of Beasts. Ch 28: Take Five!
Floyd was playing a bass riff before turning to look at Dr. Teeth. “What do you think of this, Teeth?” he asked.
“Something, something, something, something” the red haired male started to sing.
“You know, like that. What’d you think?” he added. Teeth turn to Floyd Pepper. He was wearing the sweater that Penny was knitting. It goes up to his nose. The ginger haired male mumbles due to the thick yarn of the sweater that covers his mouth.
“Yeah” said Mrs. Waxman as she likes how the sweater looks on the doc.
“If you’re suggesting we take a fiver, uh ... .I agree” replied Floyd with a uncomfortable look on his face.
“It’s nice and snug,” said the pink haired female. The good doctor mumbles again. She chuckles.
Floyd decides to head upstairs to get away from Penny for a bit. He walks into the living room to see Zakai and Lewis playing goldfish while Annie sleeps in his second pair of arms on his back.
“What are you guys doing?” the red haired male asked.
“Playing goldfish,” replied Lewis with a smile on his face.
“Ah, a classic” replied the red haired male as he sat on the couch next to the ginger haired boy.
“What brings you up here?” asked Zakai with a smile on his face.
“Just taking a five. Penny made Teeth a sweater while we were trying to play. Also wouldn’t stop clearing her throat” groan Floyd.
“Ah, I understand. She can be a handful at times but she is a good woman” replied the mystic.
“Yeah” replied Floyd Pepper with a sigh.
Meanwhile back downstairs, Animal was beating his drums when JJ walked up to him. “Hey, it’s my main man
” he started to say to the drummer. The wild man starts to growl softy but there was a bit of a dog growl sound to it.
“I know. JJ bad” said JJ as he kept a hand behind his back. “But perhaps, bunny good?” he added as he revealed a bunny with snow white fur to Animal. The small mammal let out a squeak.
“Bunny!” said the drummer in a happy tone.
“Yeah, that’s right, that’s right” replied JJ with a smirk on his face as he gave the wildman the bunny. Animal holds the bunny with care and is gentle to the small mammal.
“Now, if, um, bunny good, maybe JJ good, too?” the male asked.
“Bunny man good” replied Animal as he nuzzled the bunny’s head.
“All right,” replied JJ with a smile. Nora walks over to them with a smile on her face.
“Aw. I knew he’d warm up to you.” she said.
“Yeah” he replied. Moog was in the background with a shocked face.
“What?” the black haired male said in a shock tone before taking a bite out of a cookie. Animal coos as he holds his new pet bunny. JJ chuckles.
The next day, a soulful keyboard filled the air of the basement. The camera cuts to Floyd writing some ideas in a small note pad. Then it goes over to Dr. Teeth who was playing his keyboard. He look up and gives the camera a peace sign.
The cameras cut to Animal who was just sitting behind his drums in his own little world. His eyes slowly shut. In the makeup room, Hannah was doing Zoot’s hair that went around his bald spot.
“What about James Brown? He’d be a good me” said the dark blue haired male.
“Uh, Zoot, I think that guy’s dead” replied Hannah in a worried tone.
“What? When?” asked Zoot in shock.
Meanwhile with Floyd and Teeth, the red haired male had his guitar out and ready to show the doc what he was trying to play yesterday.
“Here’s what I was trying to play for you yesterday” he said before starting to sing it to the ginger haired male.
The good doctor starts to vocalize some words in areas that need them. “Yeah” said Floyd as they worked together. Teeth starts to play his keyboard.
Suddenly Penny starts to try to sing with them. Her wailing scares Animal which causes him to hit his drums. He looked around in shock. Mrs. Waxman’s voice is
something like a dying bloodhound on a pouch. The bunny squeaks before running away to hide. Floyd looked in shock and disappointment.
Moog walked over to Janice and Lips. The blonde haired male was reading some papers while the blonde female had her guitar in her hands. “Grilled cheesy wedge?” Moog asked them. They both shake their heads.
“Ahh! Moog, Moog” said Hannah as she came running out of the makeup room. She grabs his arm and drag him into the makeup room.
“What are you doing?” the black haired male asked.
“You’re not going anywhere. Sit” Nora’s sister replied. When he sat down in the chair with a plate of the wedges. She turned to her makeup box to get a few things. “Yep, okay” Hannah said to herself.
“While I take care of these heinous dark circles, you tell me about your adorable crush on my sister” she added with a smile on her face.
Moog chuckles nervously. “What? No” he replied. The black haired female looked at him with a stare.
“How’d you know?” asked the mayhem fan.
“Glam squad knows all.” she replied.
“Then you know that I can’t compete with JJ” he replied with a sad tone in his voice.
“Dude just used my Mayhem knowledge against me,” Moog added.
“Love is a game with no rules, Moog” replied Hannah as she added some makeup to his face.
“Which means, anyone can win. Even you” she added.
“Yeah, but I don’t play games” replied the black haired male.
“My jam is just being sweet,” he added.
“How’s that going for you?” she asked.
“Really bad,” Moog replied.
“Then switch it up” Nora’s sister replied.
“Wait, why do you wanna help me?” asked Moog in confusion.
“I am team Moog all the way” replied Hannah.
“Thank you,” he replied with a smile.
“Okay, but you can’t be you,” she replied.
“Okay, so, you’re not team Moog?” the black haired male asked.
“I’m just saying you’ve got to do it JJ’s way.” Hannah replied.
“Play his nasty game, but better,” she added.
In the background Penny starts to vocalize badly, she finishes and chuckles with a smile on her face. “Don’t mind me. I was moved by the music” said Mrs. Waxman.
“And I move we take another fiver” replied Floyd with some sass in his tone.
Back over with Janice and Lips, the trumpet player hissed as he saw Teeth looking at Penny with loving eyes. Lips' fingernails grow into claws which ripped through the notes. Janice noticed this. “Lips?” she asked him.
He turned to look at the blonde female. He mumbles to her as to answer her. “Lips, are you, like, okay?” Janice asked in a worried tone.
“I noticed, like, you get upset when Teeth and Penny are together.” she added. The blonde male stayed silent for a bit. He mumbles to Janice. “I’m just being jealous
.I know it is wrong” is what the trumpet player said.
“Oh! Lips, like, it is okay to be jealous. I’m sure that Teeth and Penny are, like, just trying to fill in the bitterness between them by being, like, friends” replied Janice with a soft smile. Lips nods with a soft smile.
“Maybe Janice is right. I probably don’t need to worry about them but why I still feel like I should be near Teeth
keep him to myself” the blonde male thought to himself.

Weekend Top Ten #563
Top Ten Moments in The Transformers’ Lost Light Saga
I’ve written about Transformers a lot on here. I’d be surprised if it wasn’t the single thing I’d written blogs about the most (followed by the MCU and then, I dunno, probably Hey Duggee). It’s the biggest “thing” in my life – the media franchise I enjoy and engage with the most. And I’ve definitely ranked favourite moments before. But I wanted to return to it – yet again – for a couple of reasons.
2012 marks the ten-year anniversary of my favourite run of Transformers, across its entire nearly-forty-year history: the comics More Than Meets the Eye and Lost Light. These comics, written by James Roberts in collaboration with several artists (but predominantly Alex Milne and Jack Lawrence), tell one epic tale of friendship, tragedy, comedy, political discourse, allegory, and references to obscure British pop culture. As it happens, I’ve re-read the entire series whilst on tour with the BBC, so it’s all fresh in my mind; also another reason to revisit it in a list.
There’s another, kinda serendipitous reason to look back over IDW’s time with Transformers. This week just gone, the last ever Transformers book published by IDW was released. It is, I think, sixteen years since they first had the licence, and the breadth of great comics they’ve produced – from the first Infiltration series by Simon Furman and EJ Su to the most recent continuity written by Brian Ruckley, by way of MTMTE, Robots in Disguise, Furman and Andrew Wildman continuing their nineties G1 run in Regeneration One, and the recent sort-of-not-in-continuity Last Bot Standing by Nick Roche and – him again – EJ Su – is remarkable. It’s a hell of a run, the best the franchise has ever been handled by one company. No film, no animated series, no other published comics come close for me. How the merry hell do they follow this?
For the first time, though, I’m singling out one specific arc – the Lost Light Saga, for want of a better title (I would also consider “Sad Gay Robots in Space”) – and just picking the best bits. I’m also doing deep on why they’re the best. And I’m going to try to say where you can find this great bit of a great comic!
This is a celebration. I want that to come through. I hope that when all is said and done – and this might end up being my last word on the Lost Light – that the myriad reasons why I adore this series is evident. The nuance of the writing, the fidelity of the artwork, the breadth of the allusion, the comedy, pathos, empathy, sadness, love. It’s a masterful piece of work that had me tearing up multiple times, sometimes over bits that I didn’t remember or that just didn’t hit me first time round.
Also, y’know, spoilers. I’ll put a break in. But if you do want to enjoy the saga in its entirety, maybe don’t read this list. Buy the paperbacks, get it on Kindle, scour your local comic shop for back issues. And then maybe you’ll join me in wishing happy birthday to the greatest iteration of my favourite franchise.
And I really want to emphasise that. Transformers really is my thing. it was the first cartoon and comic I fell in love with. It’s remained more important to me than, say, Star Wars or the MCU, or other childhood loves like Ghostbusters, Turtles, and even my beloved orange meatball with stripes, Garfield. Transformers is really the only thing I can see myself going to conventions for on the reg, a thing that just speaks to me, that I get unequivocally nerdy about. I wouldn’t say it’s like a religion but it probably occupies the same irreducible part of my soul that, like all the cultural bits of Catholicism, will never leave me, no matter what. And all of that – the length and breadth of it, the joys and sorrows, the heart and soul – my favourite bit of Transformers are these comics. I think I’ve said it before, but they achieved something.
Tumblr media
“Don’t change back”: the arc of Megatron becoming an Autobot was one of those it’ll-never-work things that did work, and it worked so damn well. It became an examination of corruption and ideology and self-determinism and, well, the nature of tyranny, but also guilt and acceptance. Megatron, now a determined pacifist, is compelled back to violence to defend his new friends, but in doing so slaps a Decepticon badge over his Autobot one. When the dying Ravage – always sceptical and disapproving of his former boss’s change to the red team – notices, he reaches his hand out to touch the badge and says “don’t change back”. Back to what? Back to being an Autobot? Or back to being a Decepticon? These were his last words, and we’ll never know what they mean. And I really need to underline, Ravage is one of my favourite characters, and this is how he died. It just helps to underline the massive schism in Megatron’s psyche, his own continued self-doubt, the betrayal his former friends now feel, and – yes – his continued guilt. Quite how this ridiculous plot thread, imposed upon the writer by the publisher, turned into the cornerstone and most compelling element of the entire run is just exceptional writing and character work.
“Even Team Whirl”: this is two-fold because it’s a great moment and a call-back. The first time we see Whirl he’s about to kill himself. He’s filled with self-loathing because he’s been abused and mistreated, he’s a violent loner who’s alienated all his friends, and because he might have started the war in the first place. He’s a horrible person who we don’t really like but very slowly we grow to love him as he opens up. And then when Rodimus gives to inspire everyone he includes Whirl – “even Team Whirl” he says – and Whirl does seem to notice. Then, at the very end, Whirl has enough self-belief in his own latent goodness that he can open the Matrix, saying to himself “Even
 Team
 Whirl
”. So it’s partly the story of Whirl’s redemption and how he learns to believe in himself, and also a story about how Rodimus is just a cool guy and super-inspiring.
“Goodnight, little one”: after Getaway grooms and gaslights Tailgate, he outlines the four steps a Transformer takes to codify their relationship (basically, wedding vows). Tailgate is rescued by Cyclonus, but as they’re pinned down by security forces, we see the four steps play out again: actions that Cyclonus has taken over the years – instinctively, selflessly, without thinking – that prove how much he’s always loved Tailgate. It’s a heartbreaking encapsulation of their relationship when Tailgate realises all of this, realises Cyclonus is the right one after all. Then Cyclonus is shot to pieces.
“Megatron was able to open it when you couldn’t
”: might need a bit of explaining this, but the whole saga ends with the team opening multiple Matrixes (Matrices?) at the same time. Except they only open if you feel like you deserve to open them, that you’re good enough. Throughout, Rodimus has been an egocentric do-gooder who wants everyone to think he’s ace; that he’s a true Prime, essentially. He opens his Matrix effortlessly. But later he tells a court that he couldn’t open it, but Megatron could; he lies to the universe to try to get them to pardon the guy who started the war and once tried to kill him. This evolution of their relationship and his own personality is so beautifully sad and, ultimately, heroic. Like a true Prime.
“I love you”: why are so many of these sad? Despite what I said about Tailgate and Cyclonus, the defining relationship of the series is Chromedome and Rewind. One can read people’s minds by injecting their skulls; the other is constantly recording everything and saving the footage to a vast database. When Rewind dies, Chromedome wants to remove the memories of his dead love from his own mind; but a recording by Rewind, spliced together from dozens of different videos, leaves him a beautiful but tragic message from beyond the grave, culminating in three very simple words. Chromedome decides not to wipe his own mind.
“Remember me as I was”: one of the best long-running arcs in the series was the frequent flashbacks to old Cybertron (we’ll see more of this later). The mysterious, unnamed senator who befriended Orion Pax – with his vibrant, ever-changing colour scheme and propensity for emotional outbursts – is a mysterious and slightly sinister character. What’s his game? Is he grooming Orion? And then as the real sinister villains take over, the scale of the senator’s punishment is horrific and severe and we discover that his face, hands, and entire personality has been irrevocably altered, and he was in fact the cold, emotionless, logical Shockwave, one of the most notorious Decepticons. It’s a terrific origin for a popular character, suitably shocking and unexpected; a great twist.
“We’re going to steal the Matrix”: still back in the past for this, another classic cliffhanger ending. After establishing Orion Pax as the supercop who can’t be stopped, we have a number of plot threads converge as the scale of the evil Cybertronian Senate and the sinister, fascistic Functionists becomes apparent. Knowing what must be done, Orion hatches a simple but impossible plan: steal the Matrix. It turns a flashback mystery-cum-character piece into, all of a sudden, a Cybertronian heist movie; Orion’s Eleven. And it is, of course, excellent.
“It happened off-panel”: it’s a funny book, this, and sometimes you just need a good gag. I was tempted to include the Holiday Special and its “Contrivance Engine”, but really my favourite of the Red Dwarf-style silly sci-fi gags is the Meta-Bomb – “it blows a hole in the fourth wall”. Swerve – comic relief with a tragic backstory – presses it and instantly becomes a sort of metafictional narrator, semi-outside of the narrative, not quite Deadpool but a step removed. The fact that this gag, making use of and fun of the comics medium, is great in and of itself is one thing; but it also sets up further developments down the road. And that’s the funny thing about comedy; the banter and the gags makes you fall in love with the characters, so when a writer twists the knife it hurts that much more.
“Tell Whirl he can have my hands”: Ratchet is a grumpy doc with a heart of gold, but it’s the grumpiness that comes to the fore more often. His Spock/McCoy banter with Drift is a solid part of the story’s early years, and one would be forgiven for thinking Ratchet was a hard, flinty sort. But when the chips are down – faced with a rampaging Overlord and certain death – he doesn’t flinch for a second, defending the needy and immediately barking orders, bestowing favours and generosity. Whirl’s loss of hands and the abuse that loss signifies is a great weight on his soul, and instantly Ratchet offers to alleviate that. It’s so fast, so instant a thought, that its generosity takes me by surprise.
“It’s not funny at all. It’s tragic”: we end where we began, with Megatron’s redemption, and once again with a fashback narrative – here Megatron talking via a sort of time travel phone with not-Optimus-yet Orion Pax. Pax, assuming he’s talking to the Megatron of his own time, is a big fan of his future foe, wants to get him to join the fight; Megatron, speaking from the future, drops a couple of cryptic references to their eventual animosity. There are shades of Macbeth or Milton’s Satan when he says he couldn’t turn back now even if he wanted to, but he acknowledges he will join Pax “eventually”. Tragic doesn’t cover it.
There we are then. I don’t know what else to say. I’m sad it’s over but I’m happy it happened. We achieved something. Oh boy.

It appears James Lance has booked another gig. And it's a reunion to boot.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He is back under the guiding arm of the Danish wildman (lovingly) Nicolas Winding Refn who directed him in BRONSON
Tumblr media
for Refn's adaptation of Enid Blyton’s The Famous Five novels for the BBC.
Lance will play Quentin. Who is Quentin in the books?
"Uncle Quentin is George's father, and a world-famous scientist, who is kidnapped or held hostage in several of the children's adventures. He possesses a quick temper and has little tolerance for the children on school holidays, but is nevertheless a loving and caring husband, father and uncle, and is extremely proud of his daughter. He is also inclined to be very absent-minded, as he finds it hard to switch off from his work and readjust to everyday life. Despite his fame as a scientist, his work does not earn him much money. In the first book of the series, it is established that he is brother to the father of Julian, Dick and Anne."
It is also the big time acting return of Jack Gleeson of GAME OF THRONES infamy.
Joffrey, you rancid heaux.
Tumblr media
I have to say, I sat out Refn's latest series COPENHAGEN COWBOY, but I will definitely watch it. But as I watched HBO's THE IDOL starring Lily Rose Depp and Abel "The Weeknd" Tesfaye (which I actually enjoyed) I felt it would be so much better if Refn wrote and directed it because it had strains of Refns THE NEON DEMON and TOO OLD TO DIE YOUNG running through it. But if Refn made it he likely would not have cast Eli Roth and Roth was just too much fun in that so maybe it worked out for the best.

Robot Chicken #64: “They Took My Thumbs” | December 14, 2008 - 11:30PM | S04E02
I forget if I discussed the gimmick of this season's episode titles, so I'll do it here, possibly redundantly. They titled each episode so that if you were to sequence them in production order (like how they usually appear on DVD), the resulting list of episode names will spell out a cohesive message. That way, when you buy the DVD, the episodes will be listed in production order, resulting in the pay-off.
This episode felt like it had fewer sketches than most, meaning there was an emphasis on longer sketches with only a handful of channel-change gags or shorties. The first one is about the contractor building the dungeon trap from the opening sequence of Raiders of the Lost Ark. The joke being that it’s silly and doesn’t make a whole lotta sense. Also the contractor sorta got a little too creative vs. what was actually asked of him. This one is decent, basically on par with an average SNL sketch. Actually now I’m recalling sketch where Christopher Walken plays Blofield, and James Bond shows up to his liar unexpectedly ahead of schedule and he has to apologize for the construction going on. This is different enough for me not to be pissed at it. Also the Walken sketch sucks.
Next is Train Man, about a guy who gets squished by the Subway and must live the rest of his life being squished, for if they move the train it will cause his organs to fall out of his body and he’ll die. He spends his lifetime being a businessman and ignoring his wife and kids. There’s a guitar song that goes along with it. I guess this one alludes to an old urban legend. I don’t know man, I didn’t get much out of this one.
The next sketch is about Jason Vorhees leading a boring life of quiet domesticity, but he eagerly awaits Friday the 13th so he can go out on have a killing spree. This one is fine, I guess, but the premise is faulty. I am pretty sure Jason doesn’t care about the actual day he kills people. This MF would kill on Talk Like A Pirate Day if he felt like it. And he should!
You see, I wrote the joke “this MF would kill on ____ if he felt like it” and that’s what I came up with. Sorta low-hanging fruit. I could’ve gone with something edgier, like my birthday. Can you imagine bad stuff happening on my birthday? People wouldn’t be able to say “happy birthday” to me. This is the saddest thing I can think of right now!
Wildman is a sketch where kids are persuaded by one of their mothers to go swimming instead of cooping themselves up playing video games. She’s helped along by Wildman, a kid-friendly “outrageous” rocker whose advice gets preachier and lamer. The kids become disillusioned with Wildman, who doesn’t seem all that wild to them any more. The final gag is Wildman departing with a message against gay marriage. This one’s decent, too. Not mad at it! Wildman is voiced by Sebastian Bach, and he gives an great performance.
The final sketch is Bring A Sidekick to Work day, which is a bunch of lame riffs on DC Comics heroes being lads with each other. Sebastian Bach voices Martian Manhunter in this one, which was a little surprising to learn. The Robot Chicken crew have said in one of the few audio commentary tracks I listened to that when they get a guest star, they typically have them voice three different voices. Usually it’s obvious, like when you have somebody like Keith Crawford voicing a doctor. According to the wiki, this sketch was co-written by Geoff Johns, a guy whose name I’ve seen on DC comics before.
I’d call this one slightly stronger than most Robot Chickens, but I am very tired of sketches where Superheroes are horny. Just knock that shit off. All of them retain their semen, or have been chemically castrated as ordered by a judge. Sorry, I’m a stickler for this sort of thing.
