James Vila Blake, Sonnets from Marcus Aurelius 16
16.
Whatever any one may say or do, it is my business to be good; just as an emerald might always say: Let any one do or say whatever he will, it is my part to be an emerald, and preserve my hue. And in like manner might speak gold or purple.
—Marcus Aurelius, Meditations 7.15
16.
’Tis said the ass cried down fine Philomel, The note of that sweet singer of the night Not being a bray. So might gross soil expel Emeralds, or gold, or royal purple’s light. But what saith gold, when so the soggy earth Disputes its yellow blaze, what th’ royal hue Or verdant gems, though everything i’ the girth Of ireful exhalations sulphurs the view? Unto the noisome mist of the gross chatter The gold saith naught, but shines as ’tis the more; The princely purple never heeds to flatter, And emeralds color like a small sea-shore. Like purple, gems and gold is my one art; Men cog and jog; my right self is my part.

Rosalía’s Star Power Is on Display at Webster Hall on Monday Night
Rosalía – Webster Hall – April 29, 2019
When have you last heard flamenco music in the sphere of popular music? Not often, aside from the occasional flourishes of the flamenco guitar on a pop record. Please let me introduce you to one Rosalía Vila Tobella, simply known as Rosalía. Having already previously collaborated with Pharrell Williams, James Blake and J. Balvin, Rosalía has become a critics’ darling thanks to her sophomore album, El Mal Querer. The Guardian touted her as a “gamechanger” with music as “potent and adventurous enough to grip you without you understanding a word of what she’s actually singing.”
Beyond her musical muscles, Rosalía’s a triple threat with dance moves highlighted in her videos, and she’ll soon will make her acting debut in Pedro Almodóvar’s upcoming Dolor y Gloria opposite Penélope Cruz. The Spanish singer-songwriter, fresh off acclaimed performances at Coachella and Pharrell’s inaugural Something in the Water Festival, graced the newly renovated Webster Hall on Monday, her first of two sold-out shows there, on her first ever North American tour. With an army of white-gauze-clad ladies, Rosalía syncopated with her troupe as she kicked off her tight set with “Pienso en Tu Mirá.” The commanding singer wore a blue latex jumpsuit and platform sneakers while strutting the stage with her own unique flair. Early on the applause was deafening, causing her to confess, “This means a lot to me…. It’s amazing to be here tonight to share this with you. I can feel you know my music and feel it.” A cover of James Blake’s “Barefoot in the Park” almost felt out of place as the flip from Spanish to English sounded nearly foreign, but the vibe wasn’t disrupted too long as frenetic claps hastened forth “Que No Salga la Luna.”
Assuming a flamenco pose, Rosalía took the stage solo to flourish amongst the rhythmic cadence. Fan favorites were saved for the tail end of the performance with the sensual “Lo Presiento,” a cover of J. Balvin’s “Con Altura” and the hit single “Malamente.” The house lights came on, but fans weren’t ready to call it a night, chanting, “Otra! Otra!” The undoubtedly rising star quickly returned to serenade the crowd with an a cappella cover of Carlos Gardel’s “Volver.” —Sharlene Chiu

UNDER THE CUT YOU’LL FIND THE LIST OF ALL THE ROOMMATES.
The roommates were done by a RANDOM generator. Except for the people who were on the ship list and who messaged us requesting a specific roommate.
If you do not see your characters name on this list, or if you happen to get paired with one of the other characters you play - please message us POLITELY and let us know - the generator was a little weird, but hopefully, everyone is accounted for - if not, we’ll fix it, don’t worry :)
Remember, we are NOT mandating threads to be completed during this trip, however, we do expect everyone to reach out to their roommates, people you don’t normally talk to, etc, and simply branch out. If this goes well, we may do future trips without a mandated thread. However, if this doesn’t go well we will go back to mandating threads. We are trusting you all with this.
Please be mindful that we have an activity check before the trip, so do expect some changes! If your partner goes inactive or leaves the roleplay during the trip - the list will not be updated. Your FC just will no longer have a roommate for the duration of the trip to avoid confusion since this is only a weekend trip and not a week. However, if we get new members come in during the trip, they will be added to the roommates list accordingly.
Those on hiatus during the trip and reduced activity were not included in this list - but they must just state that their characters are on the trip. However, if those on reduced activity or on hiatus can get online during the trip to rp - you’re more than welcome to!
So, that being said - please LIKE THIS POST so you can not only keep track of this list but also so we know you read this notice.

Y el disco de Rosalía?
Rosalía Vila Tobella is 25 years old, and Spain has decided that she is the future. And if not all of Spain, then a lot of it. If you looked up Rosalía on Wikipedia, here’s what you’d read: “Rosalía Vila Tobella (born 25 September 1993), known mononymously as Rosalía, is a Spanish singer, songwriter and record producer from Sant Esteve Sesrovires Catalonia, Spain.” Her Wikipedia page would tell you that she does modern interpretations of Flamenco music, that she’s a crossover critical and commercial success, that she’s collaborated with Pharell, and J Balvin, and James Blake, that Pitchfork called her sophomore album, El Mal Querer, one of the best albums of 2018. Her Wikipedia page would be accurate. But it wouldn’t tell you why she matters, what she means.
Here’s the thing: I’m half Spanish, half Norwegian. I didn’t grow up in either country. I sat English exams and watched American television. My dad was mostly in charge of the music in the house, which meant I grew up on Bruce Springsteen and David Bowie and Tom Petty, rather than Niña Pastori and Camarón de la Isla. (It is not exclusively my dad’s fault, my mum was also a bigger fan of George Michael than she was flamenco). All this to say, I’m Spanish, but not quite.
The truth is I was late to Rosalía. She was making waves in Spain, and in the Spanish speaking world off the back of her first single, Malamente, in late May. She was on Later with Jools Holland by October. And I still hadn’t heard of her, not really, until I was in my kitchen over Christmas, talking through my favourite albums of 2018 with my mum, and she kept asking me where I would place Rosalía’s album (Y el disco de Rosalía?) She kept asking, and I’d brush it off. I only really listened to it on my flight home after New Year’s, by then a little worried that my family had overhyped it. It’s the best album of 2018. Rosalía Vila Tobella is 25 years old, and she wrote an album as her dissertation, which combined flamenco with modern production styles, which placed handclaps against the sound of revving motorcycles, which took the narrative of a 13th century courtly love novel and set it in the urban landscape of modern Barcelona. She did not come here to fuck around.
I listened to El Mal Querer, which translates to The Bad Loving, the whole way through on that flight home. And then I listened to it again. Honestly, I listened to it pretty much exclusively, eight hours entirely immersed in Rosalía’s sonic world, which was weird and fantastic and unexpected, and Spanish, even when it sounded like might be not quite.
And that’s the world we’re going to delve into this week, welcome to El Mal Querer!

James Vila Blake, Sonnets from Marcus Aurelius 12
12.
Ἑνὶ τέρπου καὶ προσαναπαύου, τῷ πὸ πράξεως κοινωνικῆς μεταβαίνειν ἐπὶ πρᾶξιν κοινωνικὴν σὺν μνήμῃ θεοῦ.
Delight your self in one thing above all, and find your rest in it, namely, to pass on from deed to deed suitable for social communion, with all your thoughts fixed on God.
—Marcus Aurelius, Meditations 6.7
12.
A bush, its bloom and fruit, supply all senses, While we enjoy its shadow, balm and food; To no perception doth it pose defences, But signaleth its way to any mood. Such pleasure sweet pelts on me like a rain At summer twilight suddenly, when closes A torrid day, and th’ drip mingles its vein With seepage of attar distilling on the roses. Yet of all mirth, as wine, song, games, or more, I pray me let me none unguarded plan; But serviceable worth, be that my lore, My joy that by me better joyed is man; And thinking thus: That all in One are one; So all for All as one, for One as all, be done!

1.01 - The Way Back
GT plays perplexed/drugged/brainwashed Blake very well, but its a difficult way of introducing your protagonist; we don’t really meet the real Blake until the end of the episode.
Bran Foster’s outfit is wild. I also love the way he tries to greet Blake before remembering “Oh yeah, the brainwashing!”
Terry Nation couldn’t even make it through the first episode without calling someone Tarrant.
The massacre at the meeting is still quite shocking to me, all these years later. It must be one of the most violent and upsetting scenes in all of B7. Particularly Ravella, standing and making eye contact with a trooper who then shoots her down.
Tarrant is a bastard man.
I liked Ravella, I’m sorry to see her go so soon. This will be a recurring theme.
Framing Blake for child abuse is a particularly horrible aspect of the Federation’s evilness.
Tarrant is very concerned about being identified by Blake, it could ruin his operation. So why the hell does he rock up at Blake’s trial??
Vila! Jenna! Both are amazing from their entrance. I love the way Jenna casually asks Blake the time, tipping him off to Vila’s thievery.
Tel and Maja Varon are such a nice couple, holding hands whilst they uncover a conspiracy, working together to con Ven Glynd. Super supportive wife helps husband take down the establishment (if only) (sheds tear).
Its also gross how the Federation has just.. Left the bodies in the tunnels. How long has Blake been held in prison? How long was his trial? And those bodies just lying there…
This show is Dark, I forget.
Ugh Tarrant, you DICK.
In Summary: Roj Blake has a very, very bad couple of days
Star Of The Week: Robert James is delightfully sly as Ven Glynd, but considering I just looked him up and found out he died in september, the award goes to Michael Halsey as Tel Varon, the hero that almost was.
In Memoriam: Maja Varon, super spouse
Quote: “I’ve had my head adjusted by some of the best in the business. But it just won’t stay adjusted” - Vila introduces himself to Blake in a not at all creepy way.
