“There are many shades of cool and different ways to come by it … but only Chet Baker was able to make cool jazz sound like the purest expression of self-love … Baker uses his voice like a horn, abstaining from any vocal inflection that would suggest real emotion or even the existence of anything outside his pretty boy dreamworld. Baker’s singing on “I Fall in Love Too Easily” is the music of exquisite dysfunction. Here is where he differs from his fifties twin, James Dean, whose cool wasn’t designed to contain the hot, troubled emotions that seeped out around the edges. Chet Baker was cool jazz carried to its logical, even pathological, conclusion.”
/ From “Cool jazz: the sound of one finger snapping” by Joseph Hooper in Details magazine, May 1993 /
Died on this day 35 years ago in Amsterdam under murky circumstances: doomed, ethereal and heroin-ravaged jazz trumpeter and crooner Chet Baker (23 December 1929 – 13 May 1988). For anyone curious about Baker’s story, reading James Gavin's haunting 2002 biography Deep in A Dream is de rigueur. Pictured: portrait of Baker by Richard Avedon taken on 16 January 1986. As Gavin recalls, Avedon’s photo shoot “depicted a ghastly vision of death in progress. The harsh black-and-white close-ups gave Baker the appearance of a man lying on the operating table, light blazing down on him.”

Born on this day 95 years ago: the doomed, ethereal and heroin-ravaged jazz trumpeter and crooner Chet Baker (23 December 1929 – 13 May 1988). For anyone curious about Baker’s life story, Bruce Weber’s 1988 documentary Let’s Get Lost and James Gavin's haunting 2002 biography Deep in A Dream: The Long Night of Chet Baker are both compulsory. For what it’s worth, my favourite Baker album will always be Baker’s Holiday (1965), in which he reinterprets the Billie Holiday songbook.

do yuo think swegg woudl listen to brokencyde
or what would his mysic tatse be! (in whta u think ofc! (ialso forgot if u alreadu said what entres musictasye is but if u havent plz anserness! (ornot)))
nah unfortunately i dont think thats his type of music
i can however give you the artists i know for 100% fact he likes under the cut because it's long and i'm doing it list-view for easier reading:
3OH!3 <- very important
Kesha <- also very important
Nicki Minaj
Carly Rae Jepsen
Flo Rida
David Guetta
Maroon 5
One Direction
Miley Cyrus
Owl City
LMFAO
Katy Perry (duh)
Pitbull
Lady Gaga
Justin Bieber
Taio Cruz
Black Eyed Peas
Jonas Brothers
DNCE
Bruno Mars
Panic! At the Disco (Urie edition)
Lizzo
i mean obviously a very poppy early 2010s vibe because that was kinda a big part of the theme of him (yknow.. "swag" n all) plus the timeframe he was created and he's always kindofa time capsule OF that time (i know lizzo is more of a later years vibe deal but sh.)
obviously he knows MCR too but that's like...kinda like a ...unique taste thing or idk how to say it. like its special, not usual his character playlist for truffula flu has a lot of emo songs on it (old FOB, taking back sunday, sleeping with sirens, the spill canvas, LOTS of the used) but that's more because they fit his chara, not necessarily that he listens to them
entre's music taste has always been kinda hard for me to describe...like an indie-folk?? but also a bit folk-pop??? but he also likes old jazz with crooners and all that a lot. and bluegrass. and older country. he also likes some rock like some alt-rock (he gets it from me) but mainly indie-rock. he just...really likes stuff with that "indie" sound. ironic. but i feel like it also fits w his chara bc ive always thought that if the onceler just focused on the fact he can apparently play guitar and sing rly well??? none of this shit woulda happened and he probably woulda been happier
i've never made a whole playlist just for his music taste but a few notable artists are:
Jason Mraz <- his fav
Patsy Cline <- another fav
Vance Joy
Mumford & Sons
The Decemberists
Peggy Lee
Jack Johnson
Billie Holiday
Death Cab For Cutie
Weezer
Iron & Wine
The White Stripes
Frank Sinatra
I Don't Know How But They Found Me
Johnny Cash
Dean Martin
Radiohead
Dwight Yoakam
Andrew Bird
The Hives
IAMX <- a weird one for him but i cant unassociate
Florence + The Machine
Etta James
The Lumineers
Colter Wall

last night I was asked to help out my pianist friend at a gig who needed a favour. she said the payment is a token sum—the couple who owns the spot are her close friends, and she wants me to perform some Nina Simone because the wife loves Nina and her husband wants to surprise her 'cause it's the fourth year anniversary of the bar opening. i agree immediately, because that's fucking adorable, c'mon.
my butch rushes from their house because I left my contact lenses at theirs the last time I spent the night. when I arrive, they're looking like a James Dean fucking daydream in a tight white tee and light trousers, and I swoon so hard. but when I'm in work mode, my butch is usually my "close friend"/"best friend"— her looking like a dyke is just a total coincidence or whatever.
anyway I'm being totally casual with her except I wanna jump her so bad and she looks so cute in her outfit so I can't help but pull her in close and dance with her to Nat King Cole's L.O.V.E and people see but I don't care! all doubts and fears and voices saying that I won't get hired again if they find out I'm a lesbian, that they'll think less of my ability or talent just wash away when I look into her eyes.
and when I go up to sing my pianist friend weirdly doesn't ask for a Nina Simone song to kick things off— she asks for Misty, as in look at me, i'm as helpless as a kitten up a tree. my heart clenches because that song means so much to me and my butch (first time we met, I was auditioning for my uni's jazz club with that tune. she didnt like it but she said after she heard me sing it, she started to).
pianist friend says, "announce that this goes out to [owner's name]'s wife!"
so I go, "this one's a special tune for [wife's name]!" then I pause. and before I know it I blurt out, "and this one's for my wife too."
the crowd cheers. my butch blushes so cutely and raises her g&t with a bashful grin.
anyway, it was adorable and perfect and a big moment for me. and one day I hope I'll be brave enough to introduce her as my wife at all my shows

Scottish pop singer/songwriter Dean Ford was born as Thomas McAleese on 5th September 1946 in Airdrie.
You wait all year for a Scottish singer/songwriter to appear, and two come along at once. Dean Ford was one of the most underrated artistes Scotland ever produced.
Tom, as he was still known as back then first began singing in public accompanying a jazz ensemble at the local Whifflet parish church dance hall. He formed his first musical group The Tonebeats at age 13, one of several he hooked up with during his teenage years. By the time he left Clifton High School in Coatbridge at age 15, he had been gaining more exposure as a featured singer. His break came after a performance with the Monarchs at the Barrowland Ballroom in Glasgow in 1963, where he was seen by members of the popular east Glasgow band The Gaylords and subsequently invited to join the group.
McAleese adopted his stage name (a moniker he coined by combining the names Dean Martin and Tennessee Ernie Ford) and The Gaylords were re-christened Dean Ford and the Gaylords. With hopes of achieving more commercial success, Ford and the band relocated to London in 1965. The bands name came from a notorious post war Chicago Gaylords street gang.
Although the band were very popular and despite being crowned ‘Scotland’s Top Group’,they struggled to break through into the big time. The band changed their name in 1966, but although they were well received , they still struggled to make progress, this was despite Jimi Hendrix describing their 1967 song I see the rain, as the 'best cut of 1967, it did however make it to the top of the charts in The Netherlands!
Things started to go their way that year though when they played as Pink Floyds support at London’s Marquee Club, they started mixing it with the likes of The Who, Joe Cocker, Traffic Gene Pitney and The Tremeloes. They still lacked that chart success and CBS threatened to drop the band if they didn’t deliver soon, they famously rejected the song, Everlasting Love in 1967, Love Affair took the song to the top of the charts! Eventually the band had a hit with Lovin’ Things the following year, their follow up fared less well but in 1969 Marmalade became the first Scottish group to ever top that charts with Lennon and McCartney’s Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da.
Marmalade went on to have 8 more top 40 hits over the years, my favourite was written by Ford and band member Junior Campbell, Reflections of My Life. Marmalade continue to show up at these 60’s shows but as far as I am aware none of the original band remain.
Dean lived in Los Angeles for much of his later life, but never forgot his routes, recording and releasing his final album, This Scottish Heart just two months before his death, the album of course having a Scottish theme with tracks like Glasgow Road, Bonnie Mary, Made in Scotland and For MacDougall included in the 30 songs, which also featured a remake of my fave Marmalade song, Reflections of my Life.
In 1998 Dean and Campbell were awarded a Special Citation of Achievement by BMI for attaining radio broadcast performances in excess of one million in the U.S. alone.
Dean, Thomas McAleese passed away suddenly on Hogmanay 2018 in Los Angeles, at the age of 72.
The song is Bonnie Mary by Dean, a song about our tragic queen, Nary Stuart.
We'll remember Bonnie Mary Queen of Scotland and Queen of France All the poets spoke of her great beauty And they say, she loved to dance
She married Darnley and they had a baby Oh, too soon, they took wee James away Then they chased our Mary out of Scotland Never to come back again
So they took a boat across the Solway Stepping on to England's northern shore She wasn't safe with Elizabeth in London Her fate was sealed forevermore
So it was to be, she was held a prisoner For eighteen years They shuttled her around Then one day, she called out to her maker Mary's head fell to the ground
So we remember Bonnie Mary Through it all, her dignity still shows All the poets spoke of her great beauty And our love for Mary grows Oh, oh, our love for Mary grows

“I see [Micky Dolenz] around from time to time. He lives near here. He made it; he crawled up that ladder. We’re still friends, so many years after the Monkees went off the air. [Davy Jones] was the little English guy. He was not a car guy; he was into horses. He wanted to be a jockey, and he was just crawling up that ladder. […] [Peter Tork] was an oddball. [Michael Nesmith] was very much a car guy. He knew what he was doing with driving and things like that. I built a little Mini up for him, and jazzed it all up with paint. And I painted a real bitchin’ boat for him.” - Dean Jeffries, Dean Jeffries: 50 Fabulous Years In Hot Rods, Racing & Film (2009)
Speaking of cars...
“Did I tell you, while I was in London I bought a red MGB-GT sports car, with a black interior. I had no real intention of buying one. I was actually looking at them because Marilyn Schlossberg — our publicity director — wanted to buy one, and I thought they looked so groovy I just had to buy one myself. We (the other three guys and myself) then presented Marilyn with her MGB-GT as a birthday gift. I am not really much of a car nut, but this car is a real groove, and man, it really travels!” - Peter Tork, Fabulous 208, 1967
“[‘MGB-GT’ is] my Homage to my old car, one of the great loves of my life. It used to stop running within coasting distance of service stations and like that. Mike joins me on the back-ups.” - Peter Tork, Stranger Things Have Happened 1994 liner notes
“Peter was a really bad driver. He was reckless, he took a lot of chances. I clearly remember this car [the red MGB-GT) and following [him] over Mulholland Drive in my [Volvo] P1800. I was trying to keep up with him but I was scared, I thought this is reckless teenage James Dean stuff. He always drove fast. He drove like he was immortal.” - James Lee Stanley, Stranger Things Have Happened vinyl sleeve notes

Gayle Dean Wardlow: Chasin' That Devil's Music: Searching for the Blues (1998)
Contrary to what you may have heard -- or not heard, as it were -- Black History Month hasn't been canceled this year; in fact it's as vital and meaningful as it's ever been.
In my modest efforts to promote it, last week I wrote a few thoughts about Miles Davis' essential autobiography, which almost doubles as a history of jazz itself, so this week I'll turn to some music that's even closer to my heart: the blues.
Now, I own a lot of books about the blues and early 20th Century Delta Blues, in particular, but few of them build a more immersive facsimile of the harsh world that spawned these musicians than Gayle Dean Wardlow's Chasin' That Devil's Music: Searching for the Blues.
Why, by the time I finished reading it, I almost jumped in my car and drove off to find those mythical crossroads where the devil and these supernaturally gifted bluesmen supposedly conducted their nefarious business.
Born in Texas and reared in Mississippi, Wardlow began collecting blues 78s and their creators' untold stories in the 1960s, literally knocking on strangers' doors in search of first-hand accounts while cataloguing what few official records could be found.
His efforts dispelled a huge number of fallacies, falsehoods, and outright fantasy, and though Charley Patton and Robert Johnson drew the bulk of his obsession, Wardlow's investigations shed more light on an almost incomparable trove of lesser-known bluesmen.
Here's a short list to whet your whistle: Skip James, Tommy Johnson, Ishmon Bracey, Garfield Akers, Hayes McMullan, Peetie Wheatstraw (a.k.a. 'The Devil's Son-in-Law') -- all of whom make the comparatively well-known Elmore James a strange choice to grace the book's cover.
But this shouldn't deter you from digging into these reverential pages, ideally soundtracked by the accompanying CD, which combines vintage blues performances and some of Wardlow's personal recorded interviews with many of these legendary artists.
At a time when haters and trolls are complaining about Beyoncé winning a 'Best Country Album' Grammy -- as if white Americans haven't spent the past century shamelessly appropriating black music, art, and culture for their own benefit! -- books like this are more important than ever.
Featured Records:
Charley Patton: Complete Recorded Works Volume 2 (2013)
Tommy Johnson: Complete Recordings in Chronological Order (1928-30) (1998)
Peetie Wheatstraw: Volume One: The Devil’s Son-in-Law - 1930-1936 (1969)
Skip James: The Complete 1931 Session (1986)

🐧 + Pedro!!
Their favorite Disney/Pixar movie: Pedro is a not-so-secret fan of the animated version of The Lion King. In his opinion, it is one of the greatest films in Hollywood, and he refuses to watch the so-called live action version. He also loves the Toy Story franchise too. Although he won’t admit it, he cries at the end of the third film, much to Kurt’s amusement.
Their go-to style of clothing: His go-to style is a shirt, a black leather jacket, ripped jeans and a dog tag necklace.
Their favorite vacation memory: It was when both him and Ariel eventually did decide to travel together, and they went to New York to see Rachel perform as Janet in a Broadway production of Rocky Horror Show, when they befriended a performer named Belladonna Russo, who was playing Magenta on that night, and both he and Ariel decided to set their new friend on a date with Brittany, and luckily for them both, Belladonna and Brittany are perfect for each other, and Pedro and Ariel were very glad that their idea worked.
Their favorite fairy tale: Puss in Boots. He loves how the main character is such a smooth-talking, suave, charming cat - like a furry version of Kurt.
One hidden talent of theirs: Tap, and jazz dancing.
One thing they’ve kept since childhood days: Polaroid photographs of him and Ariel that were taken during various moments throughout both their childhood.
Their favorite holiday memory: Pedro's birthday is around the same day as The Day of the Dead, and on that year, Pedro and his familia didn't feel like celebrating as it was also a year's anniversary that Pedro's padre walked out on them (not that Pedro minded; he was a shitty padre anyways!!). and Ariel and the rest of The New Directions decided to cheer him up by throwing a fiesta with lots of alcoholic drinks and snacks. Ariel even surprised him with an edited video full of messages from his beloved friends, including Kurt, where he confesses his love for Pedro and apologises for getting off the wrong way at first and his biphobia, in which a drunk Pedro kisses him as a response to his feelings.
Their first crush: His first crush was actually his best friend Ariel Berry when they were both six years old, in which Ariel scoffed of the idea. His first celebrity crush, however was James Dean when he first discovered his Papito’s old VHS tape of Rebel Without a Cause.
Something they would never admit to anybody: He defended his sister Jacinta when her abusive ex-boyfriend grabbed her while she was trying to move her belongings out. This led to Pedro beating him to a pulp and almost being sent to a juvenile detention center for doing so.
Their favorite wild animal: Tigers.
Thank you for the ask @luucypevensie!! 💕 Also Tagging the Glee gang @daughter-of-melpomene @ginger-grimm @manyfandomocs @ginevrastilinski-ocs!!

Dream Reality Character Intro
Short biography about her past;

~ he was just 20 years, her mother 19 as they got her and became parents, her mother's family stayed in Spain and so her mother lived wither Mike's family together (his mother and brother)
~ she grew up in America with her father, Mike Treylon, who was a street musician in a small neighbourhood (ghetto kinda...) and her mother, who worked in a small cafè... her father was friends with Lionel Richie and Stevie Wonder.
~ she was 8 as she saw Etta James in a jazz bar from the window, since then she had a dream to become a singer one day.
~ At just 5, she learned how to play piano with the help of Stevie and Lionel. They also gave her vocal lessons, even if they didn't have much time.
~ at 6, she found out who jackson 5 were and who Michael Jackson was, and she had a poster in her room from Queen, Cher and Journey, the rockband
~ as she turned 8, she was on stage for the first time by the help of Lionel Richie. She had a powerful voice since she was little.
~ early december 1979, at 13 years, she wrote her first song, "My Immortal," as her grandmother died in 1978. With that song, she got even more attention. After a few days, she was in the newspaper and got a call from Dean Craigen that he would be her manager
~ shortly after Christmas, her manager told her he got a call that she could be a special guest in the AMA 1980 on January 18th [She sung 'my Immortal' and one cover song 'Think' by Aretha Franklin]

What's her personality like?
She is cute, kind, and sweet. She is mostly shy but also bubbly... off stage, she is shy and sweet, but the moment she goes on stage or is about to sing she let's her feelings tell the story. A bit like Prince or Michael Jackson if you want to see it like this....

what's her style like ?
She has a playful yet glamorous style that combines innocence with sophistication. Known for her preference for high heels paired with either short or flowy skirts, dresses and simple trousers, she creates a unique look that contrasts with her petite frame. Her fans adore her effortless blend of cute and elegant, with a wardrobe that plays on soft pastel tones and shimmering fabrics. Her signature look often includes statement earrings and a sleek, high ponytail or loose waves. She actually has natural curly/wavy hair.
stage presence?
On stage, she transforms completely, channeling deep emotions through her music. Despite her shy off-stage persona, the moment she holds a microphone, she captivates her audience with an intense energy that feels like she's telling a story with every note. Her performances are emotionally charged, and she often closes her eyes, connecting deeply with the music. Fans often describe her as a “petite powerhouse” who expresses herself fully through her voice and movements.
what are her unique vocal techniques or performance habits?
She often uses soft, breathy notes that build up into powerful, full-bodied belts. Known for her emotional range, she has a habit of doing unexpected ad-libs that add to her performances’ raw and genuine feel. During live performances, she’s often seen leaning into her emotions, sometimes even pausing to let the crowd sing with her, creating an intimate atmosphere.
Fanbase Details ...
Her fans, ranging from teenage girls to older music lovers, are drawn to her honest approach to music. They often identify with her shyness and sweet nature but love watching her transform on stage. Many see her as an icon of vulnerability, with some fans affectionately calling themselves her “Butterfly Hearts” because of her big heart and caring nature. Her actual fanbase name is "Butterflies" because her arm movements on stage looks like a butterfly sometimes and she loves butterflies.
media's opinion ?
The media often portrays her as the “sweetheart” of the industry, highlighting her kindness and humility. However, some critics initially doubted her due to her shy persona, not believing someone so reserved could carry a stage presence. She’s proven them wrong time and again with her powerful performances, and she’s gained a reputation as a “quiet storm”—seemingly gentle but fierce in talent and passion.

Here's Bonnie Mary by Dean, a song about our tragic queen, Nary Stuart.
So we remember Bonnie Mary Through it all, her dignity still shows All the poets spoke of her great beauty And our love for Mary grows Oh, oh, our love for Mary grows.

HEAD CANONS FOR MY EP FANFIC OC
CECELIA VALMOS
Tumblr media
SO these headcanons are more so her earlier years, but I hope you all like her she lives in my brain rent-free!
Cecelia Valmos was born on January 7th 1935 In North Carolina
Elvis and Cecelia met, actually during the Louisiana Hayride in which her mother brought her along to a one night only concert of hers.
The Hayride performance was the reason Cecelia really took music seriously, not that she didn't before, but her mother was a famous jazz singer, and Cecelia preferred Blues and Rock n Roll
Cecelia wouldn't say while starting her career under her mothers label that she was obsessed with Elvis, but when the two started playing gigs on the same stage, she had wanted nothing more than for him to notice her.
When Cecelia and her mother decided to open a recording studio in Memphis and keep their NYC studio open, she didn't think she'd find herself running into Elvis so much especially in Beale Street
Cecelia loves Mustang cars the way Elvis loves Cadillacs
Cecelia would sneak out of her mothers tour Rehersals if she knew Elvis was in town.
Cecelia and the colonel don't exactly see eye to eye, but not as much as Her mother and the colonel don't.
When Cecelia finally got to meet Elvis, it was at Club Handy by the doing of BB King.
Cecelia, in her early career, was very well seen as risqué for her choices in dresses, the nearly skin-tight pencil skirt dresses, and her outrageous rockabilly hair, thus earning her the title of " The lady Elvis."
It was a compliment until it wasn't... although it never was a compliment in the first place.
When the two did start dating, both their managers agreed it was safer for them to hide their relationship rather than be open about it.
They were bad about hiding it.
Cecelia had a huge crush on James Dean, Frank Sinatra, and Cab Calloway growing up.
She's a Betty Boop Fanatic.
A Billy Holiday Fan
And Ella Fitzgerald
Her favorite superhero is Wonder Woman
She inspires to be a bombshell like the classic Hollywood greats.
When Elvis was drafted, she was devastated. She'd go go Graceland every day wondering if he was back yet.
Gladys found her dedication to writing him letters very sweet.
However, Cecelia would barely eat or drink anything unless she knew he was okay.
Vernon couldn't get her to even sleep.
When Gladys passed and he returned, she refused to leave him. She gave him space but equally grieved. Knowing how it is to be close to one's mother, she could only imagine the pain he felt.
Her death impacted her mother, learning that Gladys and her mother Denise were friends when she had her first tour down south and Gladys, although not having much housed her when no one else would.
Cecelia and Elvis both have nicknames for each other, Babydoll and Sugar pie.
Elvis and Cecelia have been known for having conversations via eyebrows.
Cecelia's favorite show is I love Lucy
Although in her early 20s it wasn't her favorite genre so she'd say, but if Elvis were to ask her to sing it, she'd sing dream a little dream of me as she's scratching his head.
This usually gets him to fall asleep instantly
Cecelia is a morning person .
Shes a film fanatic.
Elvis caught her a few times while on set, saying how she'd make the movie better if she had her way.
Her favorite movie of Elvis's is King Creole, it holds a soft spot in her heart.
Not only can she play guitar, but violin and it's rare if she plays it.
They once went to go see Birds, and Cecelia was terrified to leave the house for a week.
Elvis once took her to a carnival and took her on the ferris Wheel in which she had her eyes closed until they were back on solid ground.
These are just a few head canons I have, but there's a lot more coming!
