Harley pressed his palm against his head, closing his eyes trying to stop its relentless ache. How did he get here? Mama and Abbie must be worried, he thought.

He patted his pockets, not finding anything but taking notice of a nice looking watch on his wrist. Harley wasn’t really sure where he got this, but he shook the thought out of his head, adding it up to a gift Tony sent him that his headache isn’t letting him remember.

It had been a hot day, but he’d abandoned the shade to run out over the rocks and watch the shuttle disappear. With the clear blue sky, he could see it soar upwards for an eternity. His dad had told him that was the moment he had decided to become a pilot.

His dad also told Keith that he was born to do something amazing, but he hadn’t stuck around to find out so Keith never believed him.

When he dreamed of going to space, he had imagined a cramped shuttle shared with two or three others, heading off to some unexplored area of their solar system. He never imagined he would be flying alien ships in the front lines of a universal war.

Which they won.

And so they went home.

I might be giving away too much with this, but I’m excited to share so 🤷‍♀️:

Lace (from The Vows We Make)

If Harley’s face wasn’t red before, it sure was now. Peter’s face was the same, and he was keeping his gaze down at the wood paneled floor. The room erupted in applause and whistles and Harley hurried to their table with Peter close in tow.

The table was on a higher platform with a few other tables decorated just as fancily. It was very romantic, candles in the center and a lace tablecloth Peter picked at anxiously. Luckily the noise was gone and they were not the center of attention anymore, but they were both still coming down from the unexpected applause.

Puzzle (from The Vows We Make)

Peter was a puzzle. One he used to be able to solve but now he was left clueless as to what piece fit where. He felt like he was trying to ride a bike again, and the skill had become rusty in unuse. One moment it was like before the breakup, Peter happy and touchy. The next Peter would be irritable and angry and acted like touching Harley would give him the plague. It was exhausting. Harley understood he was upset, heartbroken after Mj had broken up with him but it had been so long. Half a year and he was still taking it out on Harley.

Part of Harley was worried he knew about his crush. That he found out and was trying to move past it but couldn’t. What if Peter was disgusted by him? Harley swallowed bile that built in his throat. It wasn’t Rose Hill anymore. Peter wasn’t like that. But why was Harley the only relationship that seemed affected since the split? What was there to this that he couldn’t figure out? He was constantly named one of the smartest people of his generation and yet for the past six months he had never felt more clueless.

Harley stared at his bag that sat discarded in the corner of his room. He could pack it. Leave and find somewhere to go where he wouldn’t be a burden to anyone anymore. His mom and sister are doing great with the lack of an extra person to pay for, and with him fully gone his mom could use his christmas and birthday present money on Abbie’s. Abbie deserved it.

He thinks Tony would be relieved. Maybe he would feel a little guilty, and maybe a very vindictive part of Harley wanted that. Tony felt guilty about everything. But despite that, he thinks Tony and Pepper would be happy to have Harley off their plate. They never really wanted him here anyway, they were just too nice to refuse when he called Tony a year ago and complained about how terrible his school at Rose Hill was.

He gets it. He really does. Harley doesn’t want to have to deal with himself either and yet he’s stuck with himself. Forever. The thought sent a cold shiver down his spine and he pulled the blanket tighter around his body. He was so tired.
