In a new commission by BBC Radio 2 for BBC Sounds, The Showstopper will be available from 19 March featuring Bridgerton’s Jonathan Bailey.

40 years ago the HIV virus, and the resulting disease AIDS, were named. It devastated people’s lives all over the world, including bringing immeasurable heartbreak to the theatre community of Broadway and the West End.

Theatre, however, became a voice of awareness, rebelling against the stigma present at the time. There were plays, one-man performances and musicals highlighting the disease and its effect on people, spreading messages of hope and support and helping to quash hurtful and misleading information.

In this programme, actor Jonathan Bailey, who performed as a child in Les Miserables in the West End at the time, tells the story of HIV/AIDS impact on the theatre community, and tells how this community supported those affected. This documentary includes powerful stories from those at the heart of the theatre community at the time, including producers Cameron Mackintosh and Nick Allott, lyricist Tim Rice and Musical Director Jae Alexander, alongside performers such as actor and activist Jill Nalder (Les Miserables, Oliver!), Claire Moore (The Phantom of the Opera), Craig Revel Horwood, Stifyn Parri (Les Miserables, Brookside), and Make A Difference charity’s Melanie Tranter.

Some say the youngest child is the most privileged, and this stereotype has often proven true in the Kim family. He is doted upon, the apple of his parent’s eye, and, within reason,   ( as long as he furthers the Kim name, a task which he sets himself to with the same drive inherent in each of the three siblings )   he is free   —   free from the obligations of a future as a lawyer, just as everyone in his family has been; free from the weight of his parent’s plans for the oldest sibling, plans which even he does not know the full breadth of ; free to go where he wishes, to study what he wants, to befriend whom he chooses. He wanted to make a name for himself in an area different that those in his family and BASEBALL provided him that opportunity. a sport he played for fun but realized that he had a real talent for. he ended up going to a top university with a full ride, impressed during his time many coaches and recruiters, and made friends nearly everywhere he goes, but the family blood still flows through his veins, a constant, possessive desire for more.

His parent's talk about how maybe he should change his mind caused his ambition and determination to show. and in his senior year at age 22 he gets recruited by a national team as back up. a year later, during the season someone gets injured and he gets sent in and the rest is history. he arrived in new york two years ago and loved being able to play for a team so popular. he showed his family, mainly his parents, what he could do and loves his job. he is currently enjoying the money, the fame, and all the brand deals he has been doing and doesn't want it to end.

will they, wont they ( open to one ) ;; essentially a flirtationship. they flirt too much that others assume that they are dating or are going to at some point. maybe the idea has been on one of their mind but they are too good of friends to ever cross that line (?).

sibling like friends ( open to a few ) ;; people who he's sees as a sibling or they see him as one. either way they care about each other, v overprotective, always the one to make sure the other gets home safe and expects a got home safely text at the end of the night.

one (or more) night stand/ fling ( open to many ) ;; one night, he was maybe a little bit down and needed something to pick him up. this worked. or maybe they met after a few drinks and it just happened. whether it’s turned into a regular thing or was just one night can be determined later.

friends with benefits (?/1) ;; friends who hook up and either have or haven’t blurred the lines between the physical and emotional connection.

drinking buddies (? / many) ;; a friendship that relies on nothing more then drinking, whether they talk or just sit there drinking together. they sometimes also go out dancing together. or they go out together in general but they both just love to have a good time together.

one-sided / mutual crushes (?/1) ;; either they both have feelings for each other that is p obvious but aren’t ready to take the next step. or it can be one sided or both could be completely oblivious to the other liking them.

new friends ( open to a few ) ;; people who he met after arriving to town or they met thanks to his job but the whole point is that they get along.

old friends ( open to a few ) ;; maybe they were friends early in their lives or met in in their teen years but somehow or met during when he travelled and they fell apart. maybe he did something stupid and drove them away or they just never talked again until seeing each other again in NY (could be fun for plotting purposes).

late nite buddies/confident ( open to a few ) ;; he's always up late, either reading or working out. maybe they meet up to talk, eat or maybe no talking happens and they enjoy the company while each does their own thing. possibly also act as confidents for each other

bad influence (open to a few) ;; friends who he may be constantly encourage to do bad things (partying/cheating/etc).

first loves (?/1) ;; they dated when they were younger and were each others first serious relationship. now they are really good friends. that person that will always have that place no matter what and still get along as friends. or vice versa they dislike each other bitterly. maybe there is still feelings there.

enemies / frenemies / rivals ( open to many ) ;; maybe they were academic rivals or always trying to out do one another. sometimes opposites don't attract and are like fire & ice. however these two became known to each other can be determined later, but either way, they dislike / hate / talk about them behind each others back.
