Film Review: The Godfather (16)
The Godfather is a 1972 crime film directed by Italian American Francis Ford Coppola. It is adapted from a novel of the same name authored by Italian American novelist Mario Puzo. The film is known for starring now-legendary actors like Marlon Brando and Al Pacino and was shot by cinematographer Gordon Willis. It chronicles the rise to power of family outsider Michael Corleone as he becomes the Don of the Corleone family.
The movie uses visually dark, shadowy scenes to symbolize the morally dark doings of the various crime families of New York, particularly the Corleones and the Tattaglias. For example, most of the defining scenes of the movie are set at nighttime. Another way the film uses the element of sight is to contrast otherwise peaceful, mundane occurrences with the activities of the Corleones. For example, the film contrasts the wedding of Connie to Carlo with Vito accepting requests as the Don, as well as the baptism of Michael as godfather to his sister's baby with the murders of the other families' heads on his orders. The movie uses the element of sound to enhance certain scenes. For example, it uses a build-up from silence to the film's main theme to dramatically reveal the head of Jack Woltz’s horse lying in his bed and the sound of the baby crying during Michael's baptism as godfather to foreshadow the murders of the other families’ heads. It also uses the sound of a train whistle to build tension before Michael kills Sollozzo and McCluskey. In terms of color, the film uses earthy, muted tones, evoking a nostalgic feel and solidifying the setting as post-World War II America. It also uses the color orange to symbolize death, as Vito Corleone dies of a heart attack with a piece of orange in his mouth, and a basket of oranges is nearby when he is gunned down earlier in the film. In the movie, the camera evokes motion as it zooms out and pans, following and focusing on the principal characters. For example, in the opening scene alone, the camera zooms out from Bonasera, the undertaker, to reveal one of the main characters, Don Vito Corleone. The film also uses the element of emotion by allowing the audience to feel the way the characters are feeling through their lines. For example, Vito expresses his grief for his son Santino's murder with the line "Look how they massacred my boy."
Something that made this film interesting to watch for me was the perspective it offered. Instead of framing the Mafia as the antagonistic force, The Godfather portrays it in a more sympathetic light, bringing up themes of loyalty and family. Also worth noting is that at least to me, the film subtly warns against government corruption - an example being minor antagonist Mark McCluskey, a corrupt police officer, and the brief mention given to many influential figures apparently under the Corleones' control.
In my opinion, the film should have given minor characters Fredo Corleone, Luca Brasi, and Johnny Fontane more significant roles to play in the story. Other than that, I am unsure if the film could be improved.
The film's message to me was a warning: "If you get into crime, it is hard to get out. Crime hardens the kindest of men." When I saw that Michael could so casually lie to his sister and his wife about murdering his brother-in-law upon ascending to the position of Godfather, I realized just how ruthless he had become.
All in all, I would recommend the film to others, provided they are of appropriate age and mental maturity. Watching The Godfather requires attention to detail and focus to appreciate, traits slowly disappearing in a world that runs on instant gratification.

Sterling Hayden, born on this day March 26, 1916. was an American actor that specialized in film noir, in films such as John Huston's The Asphalt Jungle (1950), Nicholas Ray's Johnny Guitar (1954), and Stanley Kubrick's The Killing (1956). He became noted for supporting roles, perhaps most memorably as General Jack D. Ripper in Kubrick's Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964), Irish-American policeman Captain McCluskey in Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather (1972), and alcoholic novelist Roger Wade in Robert Altman's The Long Goodbye (1973). Tobe Hooper cast Hayden as Howard Anderson in his unrealized version of Venom. Hooper was replaced as director after only a couple of weeks of filming and the film was eventually released in 1981, with Piers Haggard credited as director.

Games Shooter by FotoFling Scotland Via Flickr: Inveraray Highland Games 2015 The Inveraray Highland Games were said to have started in 1563, when Mary Queen of Scots visited her half-sister The Countess of Argyll and was shown a display of athletics by the young men of the area. The next recorded games were in 1844 when Lady Elizabeth Levenson-Gower was the Duchess of Argyll and the Games were known as the Inveraray Regatta and Sports Club. The Duke of Argyll was appointed Chieftain of the Games in 1904, a position still held today, which involves the Duke leading the marching bands, Games officials and supporters through the town before officially opening the Games for the day. The Inveraray Highland Games have been held on the first Tuesday of Glasgow Fair ever since, apart from during the Second World War, and are now at the Winterton Park, loaned by the Duke for the occasion. The Games consist of traditional solo piping, highland dancing, heavy, field and track events and wrestling, demonstrated by some of the finest in their fields from all over Great Britain and overseas. One of the highlights of the Inveraray Games is the Challenge Caber, one of the longest cabers in the Games circuit measuring 21 feet and 6 inches. The caber is thrown and judged on the style of the throw, rather than the distance. Since 2009 the World Caber Championship has been held at the Highland Games Follow me at FotoFling Scotland

And in case I don't see you: Good afternoon, good evening, and goodnight (or: some personal news)
No sense burying the lede:
One month shy of four years after joining up, and with something like 570 columns, features, blog posts, and blurbs in the rear-view, today's my last day at The Ringer. Barring some unforeseen Friday afternoon news, my final piece will have been about the Knicks' best-laid plans not quite panning out the way they intended. Let it never be said that the basketball content gods don't have a sense of humor.
I'm grateful to have spent four years sharing a masthead with some of the best writers on the Internet, and to have carved out a niche on what I've felt was, pound-for-pound, the best NBA team in the business. I'm grateful I got to co-host a podcast with two great friends for a while, to everyone who took the time to listen to it, and to everyone who said (and still says!) nice things about it. I'm grateful to have gotten the chance to be part of the Ringer Union, and to have played a small role in trying to make a company I loved a little more fair and equitable.
I'm grateful to have gotten the opportunity to grow and develop as both a writer and analyst. I feel like I'm better at this job than I used to be, thanks in no small part to the freedom and support I've enjoyed. I'm grateful to everyone, past and present, who has made The Ringer the sort of place where someone like me could level up.
I'll still be writing about the NBA on the Internet. (And talking about it into a microphone again, too.) I'll say more about that soon. Right now, the only thing I want to say is: thank you.
Specifically, I want to thank some of the many people whose names never showed up on the things I published, but who were indispensable to every one of them—and, beyond that, to so much more of what The Ringer makes. As much as this company is about the on-air personalities on your favorite podcasts, it's also about the literal scores of people who bust their asses every day to try to make sure we're making the best stuff we can.
It takes a lot of people to make us look good. Here are the names of the ones who helped me.
MY EDITORS
Nobody edited me more often than Matt Dollinger, Justin Verrier, or Chris Almeida—three very different dudes, but all patient, professional, and kind, despite the sheer tonnage of words I dropped on their heads. Many thanks also to culture czar Andrew Gruttadaro (without whom the Stevie Nicks' Fajita Roundup and Pete & Pete pieces wouldn't have happened), Aric Jenkins, Ben Glicksman, Chris Ryan, Danny Chau, Donnie Kwak, Justin Sayles, Mallory Rubin, Megan Schuster, and Riley McAtee for pinch-hitting over the years. I'm sorry I never once hit a word count. I hope it all still hung together OK.
THE COPY DESK
I can't stress enough how comforting it has been to know that everything I write will pass through the hands of copy chief Craig Gaines and his crack team of copy editors and fact-checkers. It never ceased to amaze me that they would routinely and graciously take thousands of words about, I dunno, the Pelicans defense, and treat it like it mattered, and make sure I didn't sound dumb (or, at least, any dumber than usual).
Mil gracias to: Abou Kamara, Amaar Burton, Analis Bailey, Charlotte Goddu, Chris Grismer, Damian Burchardt, Dan Comer, Daniel Chin, Isaac Levy-Rubinett, Iza Wojciechowska, Jack McCluskey, Jacqueline Kantor, Jordan Ligons, Julianna Ress, Julie Kliegman, Kellen Becoats, Kjerstin Johnson, Lex Pryor, and—last alphabetically in this group, but certainly not least—Shaker Samman.
THE ART DEPARTMENT
One of the fringe benefits of working here has been knowing that, when my post is ready to go up, I'm going to get to see whatever rad thing David Shoemaker and his team have crafted to put up at the top of it. (Pro tip: If you write a long enough thing to get the feature build, they give it the bigger and wider art, which looks even friggin' cooler, IMO.) It's a true delight to know that, even if the words aren't all that good, the pictures will be. Thanks to David, Alycea Tinoyan, Matt James, Neil Francisco, and Jonathan Bartlett for making sure that's true.
THE SOCIAL MEDIA TEAM
I know, this sounds crazy, but apparently it's not always easy to get audience members excited to read a bunch of words about, like, the Spurs' bench? And yet, the perennially underappreciated and over-yelled-at-on-the-Internet social team never stopped working to find ways to do it. Shouts out to Alex Stamas, Amelia Wedemeyer, Bridget Geerlings, David Lara III, Jomi Adeniran, Julie Phayer, Keith Fujimoto, Kiera Givens, Logan Rhoades, Nicole Bae, Pat Muldowney, and Rubie Edmondson for tirelessly running up that hill.
AUDIO/VIDEO
Isaac Lee and Steve Ahlman produced Heat Check, and they were absolutely wonderful to work with every single week. So were Bobby Wagner and Jim Cunningham when they got spot starts with me, Gonz, and Haley. Isaiah Blakeley, Jessie Lopez, Jonathan Kermah, and Sasha Ashall were always great when I popped up on other shows, too.
Jason Concepcion and Jason Gallagher put me on NBA Desktop twice, including once when they encouraged me to say the phrase "step your pen game up, you word-broke motherfuckers," which stands as one of the proudest moments of my career.
I didn't do much other video stuff here, but when I did, I greatly enjoyed working with, learning from, and joking around with Cory McConnell, Dylan Berkey, J. Kyle Mann, Jackson Safon, Mose Bergmann, Richie Bozek, Ronak Nair, and Sean Yoo. (I haven't yet crossed paths with Aleya Zenieris, Chia Hao Tat, or Donnie Beacham, but they're getting thanked, too. It's a thank-o-rama.)
And, one last thanks:
ALL OF YOU
I'm not sure what I've done to deserve the kind, considerate, passionate, and conscientious readers and followers I've accumulated over the years. All I can do is promise to try to keep doing it, and to try to reward your time and attention a few times a week.
Thanks for sticking around. See you again soon.

With an average speed of 151.540 mph, Roger McCluskey won a race beset by rain, jack rabbits, and mechanical mishaps that took out 23 of 33 cars. Mrs. Cox is shown here with drivers Bobby Unser, who left the race with a blown engine, and Mike Hiss, who placed second. (Images: WHPO-D0289-11 & 20)

Sterling Walter Hayden was born on March 26, 1916. He was an American actor, author, sailor and decorated Marine Corps officer and OSS agent (from services during World War II). A leading man for most of his career, he specialized in westerns and film noir throughout the 1950s, in films such as John Huston's The Asphalt Jungle (1950), Nicholas Ray's Johnny Guitar (1954), and Stanley Kubrick's The Killing (1956). He became noted for supporting roles in the 1960s, perhaps most memorably as General Jack D. Ripper in Kubrick's Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964).
Hayden's success continued into the New Hollywood era, with roles such as Irish-American policeman Captain McCluskey in Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather (1972), alcoholic novelist Roger Wade in Robert Altman's The Long Goodbye (1973), and elderly peasant Leo Dalcò in Bernardo Bertolucci's 1900 (1976). With a distinctive "rapid-fire baritone" voice and standing at 6 ft 5 in (196 cm), he had a commanding screen presence in both leading and supporting roles.
After two film roles, he left Hollywood to fight in World War II. He enlisted in the Army and was sent to Scotland for training, but broke his ankle and was discharged.
He returned to the US and tried to buy a half-interest in a schooner but could not raise the money. He joined the United States Marine Corps as a private, under the name John Hamilton, an alias he never used otherwise. While at Parris Island, he was recommended for Officer Candidate School.
After graduation from OCS, he was commissioned a second lieutenant and was transferred to service as an undercover agent with William J. "Wild Bill" Donovan's Office of the Coordinator of Information. He remained there after it became the Office of Strategic Services (OSS).
As OSS agent John Hamilton, his World War II service included sailing with supplies from Italy to Yugoslav partisans and parachuting into fascist Croatia. Hayden, who also participated in the Naples–Foggia campaign and established air crew rescue teams in enemy-occupied territory, became a first lieutenant on September 13, 1944, and a captain on February 14, 1945.
He received the Silver Star for gallantry in action in the Balkans and Mediterranean (according to his citation, "Lt. Hamilton displayed great courage in making hazardous sea voyages in enemy-infested waters and reconnaissance through enemy-held areas"), a Bronze Arrowhead device for parachuting behind enemy lines, and a commendation from Yugoslavia's Josip Broz Tito. He left active duty on December 24, 1945. Tito awarded him the Order of Merit.

Diğerleri sürekli bir arama talebine sahip gibi gözükse de, bu bir solma belirtisi göstermemektedir.

“As he turned into his street he felt the eyes on him. He looked at the ground in front of him and walked. The eyes would be at the curtains or behind a hedge as a man paused in his digging. He could not bear to look up and see the flutter of Union Jacks, and now the red and white cross of the Ulster flag with its red hand.
Of late there were more and more of these appearing in the estate. It was a dangerous sign that the Loyalists were getting angry. The flags should all have been down by now because the Twelfth of July was long past. It was sheer cussedness that they were kept up.
Even looking at his feet Cal couldn’t avoid the repulsion because the kerbstones had been painted alternating red, white and blue. Cal felt it was aimed at them, the McCluskeys, because his father and he were the only Catholic family left in the whole estate. Fear had driven the others out but his father would not move. He was stubborn at the best of times but if he thought pressure was being applied to him he was ten times worse. ‘No Loyalist bastard is going to force me out of my home. They can kill me first.’
But it wasn’t a single bastard that worried Cal, it was an accumulation of them. The feeling of community that they managed to create annoyed him and the stronger their sense of community grew the more excluded and isolated the McCluskeys felt. They spoke to their near neighbours affably enough but beyond that everyone else in the estate seemed threatening. The Radcliffs and the Hendersons said they would stand by the Mc Cluskeys if it ever came to an eviction.
Cal detested the condescension of some of the Protestant men he met about the town. ‘You’re Shamie Mc Cluskey’s boy? A good man, Shamie.’ And implied in everything they were saying was ‘for a Catholic’.
There was faint affectionate amazement on their faces that there should be a Catholic who was a good man, someone to equal them.”

“Mother's Love Cited As Boy Admits Theft,” Toronto Star. November 24, 1931. Page 2. ---- She Thinks Highly of Him, Declares Counsel for Young Prisoner ---- ‘His mother thinks very highly of him,’ stated defence counsel of Wilfred Miller, who, with a 13-year-old companion, was charged in county court to-day with breaking into a booth at Mossom’s Park, in Sutton, and stealing $13 cash and a quantity of soft drinks and cigars.
‘Did you ever know  another who didn’t think highly of her child?’ asked his worship.
‘But this mother has nine, and still thinks highly of this boy,’ remarked counsel.
Miller was located in Toronto by Constable Shadwick of Sutton, 10 days after the alleged robbery. Pleading guilty to the charge he testified that he had given most of the cigars away, and had drunk the soft drunks. Magistrate Keith remanded him for sentence after his young companion had appeared in juvenile court to-day.
The fact that the section of the Highway Traffic Act regarding the notification of police after an accident was comparatively new, influenced his worship to allow A. McCluskey to leave the court with a strong warning. McCluskey, provincial officer Jack Massingham testified, had crashed into the dicth on North Yonge St., damaging his car to the extent of $120. McCluskey claimed that he was unaware of the section of the act under which he was charged.
‘The night was foggy, but my client’s mind was not,’ stated Paul Hinds, appearing for Isaac Wilson, who was charged with reckless driving. Police claimed that Wilson’s breath smelled strongly of liquor, after which his truck had smashed into a car and struck a post in York township. Wilson, in view of the fact that the court considered him a ‘decent enough chap,’ was allowed to go with a fine of $5 and costs. ‘You’re getting off lightly,’ commented his worship.
‘One-ninetieth of the National Sporting Club is here, your worship,’ announced Crown Attorney Frank Moore, introducing to the court Chas. Beeton who was charged with being ‘found in.’ Beeton was bound over in the sum of $50 to appear on Nov. 27th, without pleading.
The fact that the officer laying a charge to notify the highway department to his change of address failed to appear, was responsible for the charge against C. Lindhart being dismissed.
