President Kennedy, Mrs. Kennedy, and Vice President Johnson attend the opening ceremony of the Mona Lisa exhibit at the National Gallery of Art, 8th January 1963.
The only time the Mona Lisa would be brought over to the United States was during the Kennedy administration.

#JackJohnson (1878 – 1946) was the first Black Heavyweight #Boxing Champion regardless of being at the height of the #JimCrow era, with a career of 73 wins. He was known as the “#GalvestonGiant” and was the son of ex-slaves. Jack had contempt for racial rules, lived a flamboyant lifestyle, and dated white women. In 1912, he was convicted of the #MannAct, designed to prevent human trafficking but used in this case to punish interracial relationships. Johnson fled to Europe and did not return until 1920 to serve his sentence. While at Leavenworth Federal Prison, he hand-wrote his autobiography on prison stationery, invented a wrench, and was granted a patent in 1922.

So you want to know more about Big Barda
Tumblr media
As Tumblr's resident expert on all things Barda, and as Kelly Thompson's Birds of Prey run brings far more attention to the character, I figured it was high time someone stepped in and gave the tumblr world a primer on DC's biggest and boldest heroine.
The Basics:
Introduced in Mister Miracle #4 by Jack Kirby, Big Barda was once the leader of Apokolips' premier death squad, the Female Furies. Trained from birth for a life of violence by Granny Goodness, Barda spent the first 250 years of her life as a living weapon. This all changed when she met Scott Free, a gentle Parademon-in-training with a mysterious past and a knack for escapes. Eventually, she and Scott both escaped to Earth, where they fell in love with both the Earth and each other. She's a lover, she's a fighter, she's a Pokémon card expert, but most of all, SHE BIG.
Barda's signature defining attribute is her raw strength. Her raw muscle allows her to keep up with heavy hitters like Wonder Woman. This isn't to suggest that she's a simple-minded brute, however-- Barda has centuries of military experience under her belt as leader of the Female Furies. She's mastered multiple weapons, including spears, swords, and her signature Mega-Rod.
Below are some reading recommendations for anyone interested in Big Barda:
Essential Runs:
Mister Miracle Vol. 1 #4-18 by Jack Kirby (1971-1974)
This was the run that introduced the world to Big Barda, as well as the Female Furies. If you want to know the basics of Barda, there's no better place to start. This run is collected in a trade, as well as a part in The Fourth World Omnibus Vol. 1.
(NOTE: Even though Barda doesn't appear until issue #4, I suggest you start with Issue #1. It'll help you get acquainted with the rest of the mythos.)
Justice League International #14-24 by Keith Giffen and J.M. DeMatteis (1988-1989)
Big Barda was on the JLI! She plays off the other characters as well as ever, and a lot of what's great about her in Jack Kirby's original run is still here! Definitely check this one out if you want to see her in another team setting. This has been collected in this omnibus.
(NOTE: Once again, I recommend you start from issue #1.)
Popular Runs:
Mister Miracle Vol. 4 #1-12 by Tom King and Mitch Gerads (2017-2018)
Yeah, I know.
Listen, Tom King is a writer with... idiosyncrasies to put it nicely. The characters in the periphery of his stories tend to act really out of character, and his dialogue can be clunky at times. That being said, The Scott/Barda dynamic in this book is excellent, and this book has some of the best art that the Fourth World has seen since the 80s. The series has been collected in a trade.
(NOTE: Did you know that the CIA has over 2003 files on Tom King? Look up "Tom King CIA 2003" for more info!)
Mister Miracle: The Great Escape by Varian Johnson and Daniel Isles (2022)
If you're at all interested in the idea of a Young Adult reimagining of Mister Miracle and Big Barda's origin story with an all-black cast, this book was made for you. It's a bit heavy on the YA tropes, but the Scott/Barda dynamic is really solid. It was released as a standalone graphic novel.
Birds of Prey Vol. 5 #1-??? by Kelly Thompson and Leonardo Romero (2023-)
Admit it, this is the reason you're here. The Cassandra Cain & Big Barda is so instantly iconic, I'm surprised no writer has paired them up sooner. It also helps that this book has the single best Barda look since Jack Kirby's original run. Plus, she gets to throw down with Wonder Woman! What's not to love? This run is still ongoing, but the first 6 issues should be getting a trade pretty soon.
(NOTE: I started writing this before BOP #8 dropped, I had no idea about that thing that happens in the newest issue.)
Stories to Avoid:
Action Comics #592-593 by John Byrne (1987)
This is not a comic book-- it's an infohazard designed to cause pain and suffering to anyone who knows of its existence. Its premise is vile and disrespectful on the surface, and it becomes more insidious when you learn the context of its creation. This pair of issues is profoundly evil, rivaling even Avengers #200 in terms of loathsomeness.
For those who dare to investigate this, Content Warnings for rape, mind control, and human trafficking.
Anyway, let's end on something a bit lighter, shall we?
Remember that Mister Miracle YA graphic novel I mentioned earlier? Barda is getting a graphic novel of her own this summer! It's not out at the time of writing, but the preview pages look promising!
Anyway, I hope you enjoyed that introduction to one of my favorite superheroes ever. Please get back to me on this, I have no one else to talk to about Fourth World stuff.

Shantae: A New Genie Fancast
These are the voices I imagined for the characters in my Shantae fanfic. This includes characters created for the fanfic (like Esmeralda).
Shantae - Cristina Vee (Original Voice)
Mia (NPC) - Tara Strong (Bubbles; The Powerpuff Girls)
The Mayor (Scuttlebutt) - Dan Russell (Richard Waterson; The Amazing World of Gumball)
Mimic - J. K. Simmons (Tenzin; The Legend of Korra)
Risky Boots - Cristina Vee (Original Voice)
Jack / The Pirate Master - Steve Blum (Vilgax; Ben 10 Original Series)
Bolo - Jack DeSana (Sokka; Avatar: The Last Airbender)
Harmony - Kiana Madeira (Kara Zor-El / Supergirl; My Adventures with Superman)
Aaron (Harmony's father) - Mathew Mercer (Jotaro Kujo; JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure)
Emma (Chef Girl) - Eden Sher (Star Butterfly; Star vs. the Forces of Evil)
Serena (Harmony's mother) - Grey Delisle (Rebecca Holiday; Generator Rex)
Ana (Shantae's Mother) - Janet Varney (Korra; The Legend of Korra)
Karnov (Shantae's Father) - Fred Tatasciore (Buff Frog; Star vs the Forces of Evil)
Holly Lingerbean - Kari Wahlgren (Charmcaster; Ben 10: Alien Force)
Sky - Ashley Johnson (Gwen Tennyson; Ben 10: Alien Force)
Rottytops - Brittany Lauda (Foo Fighters; JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure)
Iris / Empress Siren - Nancy Linari (Aunt May; Marvel's Spider-Man (2018))
Vera - Laura Stahl (Bea; Pokémon: Twilight Wings)
Agnes / Angler Fish Siren - Tara Strong (Truffles; Chowder)
Molly / Coral Siren - Shelby Rabara (Peridot; Steven Universe)
Nora / Lobster Siren - Kira Buckland (Kyoko; River City Girls)
Aja (Vera's mother) - Tiana Camacho (Ermes Costello; JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure)
Squid Baron - Tom Kenny (Ice King; Adventure Time)
Young Jack - Steve Blum (Spike Spiegal; Cowboy Bebop)
Cherami - Wendie Malick (Eda; The Owl House)
Ignatius / Techno Baron - Tom Kenny (Doctor Octopus; Ultimate Spider-Man)
Genie Queen Esmeralda - Patti LuPone (Yellow Diamond; Steven Universe)
Cristina Vee is too iconic as Shantae and Risky, so I kept her in the role. With Vera, it's pretty funny because it's actually the same actress as before, but I just preferred her Bea voice from Pokemon: Twilight Wings.
I had wanted to go for a creepy feel for Techno Baron, so that's why he's got Ultimate Doc Ock's voice. With the Pirate Master, I wanted to pick an actor who could do a normal guy's voice (before he became the Pirate Master) and an almost demonic sounding voice. So that's why I picked Steve Blum for both versions of him.

Putin Goes Full “Billy Jack” on the West
25 November 2024 by Larry C. Johnson 174 Comments
Tumblr media
People born after 1970 probably have never heard of Billy Jack. I likened Vladimir Putin to Billy Jack during a couple of interviews today and figured I better ensure the younger audience [those under 50] know what I mean. Billy Jack, a movie starring Tom Laughlin, was a surprise hit in 1973. Laughlin’s character, Billy Jack, was a half-Indian seeking justice for the native Americans of South Dakota. It is a modern David vs. Goliath theme (I can’t believe this is now a 50-year-old movie). Here is the iconic scene I referenced:
youtube
What does Putin have to do with Billy Jack? It is a metaphor for the Oreshnik missile. Putin’s speech on Thursday, following the unveiling of the Oreshnik with the multiple, almost simultaneous, strikes on the Yuzhmash plant in Dnipropetrovsk, laid down this marker — i.e., if the West continues to launch ATACMs, Storm Shadows or SCALP missiles into Russia, Russia will hit back with the Oreshnik and there is not a damn thing you can do to stop it. Sort of like Billy Jack’s right foot. Wham!
I think the Oreshnik is a game changer in every sense of the word. It is precise. It packs the punch of a tactical nuclear warhead without requiring any radioactive material to initiate a chain reaction. It does not create a massive fireball or a toxic cloud that could block out the Sun. It is a genuinely new type of strategic weapon.
Oreshnik can inflict mass destruction on a fairly large geographical area (e.g., one-square mile in the case of Yuzhmash) without causing mass civilian casualties — provided the civilians, having been forewarned, have evacuated the target. In other words, the destructive power of a tactical nuke with the precision of a sniper’s bullet. As Professor Ted Postol remarked during an interview with Danny Davis last Friday, “I have never seen something like this.” Best of all, there is not a single air-defense system in the West that can stop it. That is what I mean by describing it as a, game changer.
Today was a trifecta of interviews that discussed various aspects of the Oreshnik and the course of the war in Ukraine. I began the day with Nima and Judge Napolitano and finished up the afternoon with Danny Davis’ Deep Dive. (BTW, congrats to Danny, who now has 100,000 subscribers.) Enjoy:

The British actor, who broke out in Netflix’s spooky anthology series from Mike Flanagan, speaks to Tom Murray about his thrilling new movie ‘Jackdaw’, his pride at appearing in ‘Hollyoaks’, and why he thinks he’s ‘too emotional’ to play 007.
Ihave this thing in my head,” Oliver Jackson-Cohen is telling me. “I don’t know where it comes from, but I am always convinced that everything I do is going to be s***. So I’m always pleasantly surprised that it’s not as s***ty as I think.”
The London-born actor really doesn’t need to be so anxious. Since landing his breakout role of heroin addict Luke Crain in Mike Flanagan’s Netflix anthology series The Haunting of Hill House in 2018, Jackson-Cohen has proven time and again his skill at playing damaged goods. Whether it’s his sociopathic turn as businessman Peter Quint in Flanagan’s sequel series The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020), or as Dakota Johnson’s terrifying boyfriend in The Lost Daughter (2021), or as Elisabeth Moss’s see-through ex in The Invisible Man (2020), Jackson-Cohen has cemented himself as one of Hollywood’s go-to baddies.
But in his latest film, the 37-year-old is taking a stab at being the hero... sort of. Jackdaw is set against a bleak, wintry North East of England, with Jackson-Cohen playing an ex-motocross champion and army veteran who commits a crime in the hopes of starting a new life for his family.
The actor is the first to admit that the Jackdaw script was “fairly straightforward” for the action-thriller genre: a criminal job goes awry, family member gets kidnapped, man must save kidnapped family member. But he says that the film’s director, first-timer Jamie Childs, wanted to prove that genre films like these don’t have to be the preserve of the US. “He wanted to make movies that would be made in America in the Nineties, but set in the North East,” Jackson-Cohen explains. “He wanted to really showcase that and show that we can make these sorts of high-concept movies on small budgets in the UK.”
There are blatant American influences on the film – it’s all synths, rain and neon, like it’s been put under an Instagram filter named “Blade Runner”. I tell Jackson-Cohen that his character in the film, Jack Dawson, feels like a mash-up of Ryan Gosling’s criminal characters in Drive (2011) and The Place Beyond the Pines (2012) – brooding, morally questionable types with good hearts at their core. “Yeah, like a Northern, poor man’s Ryan Gosling,” he jokes. “Listen, I’ll happily be a poor man’s Ryan Gosling for the rest of my life.”
Jackson-Cohen has a face that looks like it’s been carved by Bernini, so it’s no surprise to learn he originally found success as a model. On the day of our conversation, he’s wearing a frame-fitting black jumper; his stubble is grown out but perfectly manicured, as is his thick brown hair, which is styled into a messy quiff. A 2012 Harper’s Bazaar interview conducted at a London hotel noted a “perceptible thrill” that “rippled through the female staff” upon his arrival. His looks, accent and 6ft 3in height have also made him a perennial fixture in predictions for the next James Bond. But Jackson-Cohen is worried he’d be “too emotional” to play the part. “It’s such an iconic character, isn’t it?” he says. So if 007 producer Barbara Broccoli were to call, he’d send her to voicemail? “Of course not! No one’s gonna say no to Babs are they?”
If he does end up firing guns and sipping martinis for a few years, Jackson-Cohen would be the first Bond to have appeared in Hollyoaks, the teen soap infamous for its annual Hunks and Babes cast calendars. He booked a single-episode role on the show when he was 15 – his first acting gig. “I remember getting the phone call and being like: ‘This. Is. It,’” he says, grinning. “Walking into school the next day I was so full of myself.”
After training at London’s Youngblood Theatre Company and then the famed Lee Strasberg Institute in New York, he began booking supporting roles in a number of American films you probably don’t remember: the Dwayne Johnson clanger Faster (2010), Anna Faris’s What’s Your Number? (2011), or Going the Distance (2010), one of Drew Barrymore’s lesser romcoms. He’s spoken previously about the grand expectations he placed on his early film work, assuming they’d propel him into the big leagues. He was shattered when they didn’t, leading him to take a nine-month break from acting.
The Haunting of Hill House, in 2018, proved to be a turning point. It was a smash hit, earned him a rabid fanbase, and helped launch him into a particular kind of recognition – something he describes as “Netflix famous”. “It’s quite an interesting thing,” he says. “You’re the most famous person in the world for a while and then the next show comes along and that completely takes over.”
Regardless, the role was not without catharsis for him. He has spoken about how his own experience with childhood sexual abuse and PTSD influenced his take on the character. He first discussed it in 2017, during the #MeToo movement, writing on Instagram: “[I] have spent most of my life living with PTSD, pretending it didn’t happen, and now, trying to rebuild what was shattered. The thing about sexual abuse is that the moment it is done, however brief or however long, it changes the course of your life permanently.”
I ask him how the part impacted him, and for the first time in our conversation, the actor’s geniality falters and his face takes on a visible strain. “I think, if you speak to any of us from that cast, those characters meant so much to us because we put so much of ourselves into them,” he says. Flanagan, he says, was “incredibly collaborative” and “allowed me to just take the reins with it and left me alone to do that.” He also knows the part struck a chord with audiences. He remembers being approached by strangers in public who’d share their stories of addiction. “I think ultimately all of us feel incredibly proud that it hit a note with people and it allowed people to open up a discussion, to feel like they could talk about this stuff.”
As soon as Hill House was released, Jackson-Cohen says he was sent “a slew of horror scripts” that were “all the same thing, just a watered-down, less good versions [of the show]”. He names Ira Sachs’s raunchy gay drama Passages, Jonathan Glazer’s new Holocaust film Zone of Interest and Justine Triet’s awards season darling Anatomy of a Fall as films he’s admired from afar this past year. “I don’t think there’s a formula of: you work with this director and this writer and then, success. But I do think you reach a point where you’re like, ‘Oh I do actually want more out of this.’”
He knows, for instance, that he’s seen a certain way by casting directors. “I’ve played quite a lot of toxic men. But I’ve become fascinated with the question of, ‘how do we humanise these morally corrupt characters?’ There’s a challenge in that, which I think is quite fun. But, like anything, you go through periods where you like to play a certain thing and then it’s time to move on.”
So no more baddies? He weighs it up.
“I think I’ve played my fair share now.”
‘Jackdaw’ is in cinemas now.

James Earl Jones
1931-2024
It makes a kind of sense that James Earl Jones, one of the most revered actors of his time, was best known to most people for two voice roles, as Mufasa, the murdered and avenged sovereign in Disney’s 1993 The Lion King and of course as the voice of the masked Sith Lord Darth Vader in the Star Wars series (1977-2016), arguably the most iconic villain of all time. Hollywood racism had something to do with that, as did Jones preference for the greater opportunities of the stage (he would win three Tonys, one for Lifetime achievement). But there was the voice itself, a rich authoritative baritone that commanded respect if not deference, that could make the line “I find your lack of faith disturbing” both chilling and funny, that could turn his climactic speech in Field of Dreams (“This field, this game – it’s a part of our past, Ray. It reminds us of all that once was good, and it could be”) from sentimental kitsch to plainspoken poetry.
On the Stage he would perform the works of Shakespeare, Eugene O’Neill, Tennessee Wiliams and August Wilson but in film he was more often used to lend gravitas and dignity to  films like the Tom Clancy adaptations: 1990’s The Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger (1990 1992 and 1994-- he played an admiral), 1993’s Sommersby (a judge) and the wrongheaded 1986 Soul Man (a distinguished Law Professor trying to school a white student who used tanning pills to turn himself black – it was the 80s). He made his debut as one of the bomber crew helping Slim Pickens destroy the world in Stanley Kubrick’s Dr Strangelove (1964); was Oscar-nominated  for reprising his Tony-winning role as Jack Jefferson, (a boxer not-so-loosely based on Jack Johnson) in Martin Ritts’s 1970 The Great White Hope; played a garbageman courting Diahann  Carroll in 1974’s Claudine. He was a scientist/Demon fighter in John Boorman’s utterly bonkers Exorcist II: The Heretic (1978) and Thulsa Doom, the snake cult leading archenemy of Arnold Schwarzenegger as Conan The Barbarian (John Milius, 1982); A sergeant who loves the army but hates the (Vietnam) war in Francis Ford Coppola’s underrated Gardens of Stone (1987).  Not a bad career for a side hustle. And that voice….

James Earl Jones: A Legacy That Changed the Face and Voice of Entertainment
James Earl Jones, one of the most celebrated and influential figures in entertainment history, has left a lasting mark on Hollywood and beyond. Known for his booming baritone voice and commanding screen presence, Jones's career spans over six decades, making him a towering figure in both film and theater. From iconic roles like Darth Vader in Star Wars to Mufasa in The Lion King, James Earl Jones’s contributions have transcended generations, cementing his legacy as a true legend.
Early Life and Challenges
Born on January 17, 1931, in Arkabutla, Mississippi, James Earl Jones had a challenging childhood. He was raised by his grandparents after his father left, and, perhaps surprisingly, the man who would come to have one of the most recognizable voices in the world suffered from a severe stutter in his early years. Jones was so insecure about his speech that he remained almost entirely mute throughout much of his childhood.
However, through perseverance and the help of a teacher who encouraged him to recite poetry aloud, Jones found his voice—literally. This formative experience not only allowed him to overcome his stutter but also helped shape the future titan of theater and film we know today. His voice would later become one of the most powerful symbols of authority, wisdom, and fear across generations of moviegoers.
Breaking Barriers in Hollywood and Broadway
Jones’s acting career kicked off on the stage in the 1950s, earning critical acclaim for his performances in Shakespearean roles like Othello and King Lear. By the 1960s, he had already begun to make a name for himself on Broadway, where he showcased his immense talent and commanding presence in plays like The Great White Hope. His portrayal of boxer Jack Johnson in the play earned him a Tony Award, putting him on the radar as one of the finest actors of his generation.
While Jones’s work on stage was groundbreaking, his transition to Hollywood marked a new era for Black actors. In a time when opportunities were limited and stereotypes prevailed, Jones stood as a trailblazer, breaking racial barriers and proving that Black actors could excel in leading roles. His early performances in films like Dr. Strangelove (1964) and The Comedians (1967) showcased his range, setting the tone for a storied film career.
The Voice That Changed Pop Culture: Darth Vader
It’s impossible to talk about James Earl Jones without mentioning his role as the voice of one of the most feared and iconic villains in cinematic history: Darth Vader. George Lucas tapped Jones to provide the voice for the menacing Sith Lord in Star Wars (1977), and with that single role, Jones changed the course of pop culture.
While he never physically appeared on screen in the role, his voice performance as Darth Vader has become one of the most legendary in movie history. The deep, authoritative tone Jones gave to the character added layers of complexity to Vader, making him not just a villain but a deeply conflicted, tragic figure. This role solidified Jones’s place in Hollywood and earned him a permanent spot in the hearts of sci-fi fans everywhere.
Mufasa: The King of Pride Rock
If Darth Vader made James Earl Jones an icon, Mufasa in The Lion King (1994) made him an eternal legend. His portrayal of the wise, fatherly lion brought emotional depth to Disney's animated classic, and his delivery of lines like "Remember who you are" has resonated with millions of fans worldwide.
Jones’s performance as Mufasa became symbolic of strength, wisdom, and leadership, not only in the film but in broader conversations about fatherhood and Black masculinity. The role reinforced his legacy as a performer who could inspire and move audiences with his voice alone.
A Champion for Representation
Beyond his iconic roles, James Earl Jones was a pioneer for Black actors in an industry that historically marginalized them. He consistently advocated for diversity and representation in Hollywood and was unafraid to speak out against the systemic racism that plagued the industry. His success served as a beacon of hope for countless young Black actors aspiring to make it in the entertainment world.
Jones’s impact wasn’t just about breaking barriers—he did it with a sense of dignity and humility that resonated with fans across all walks of life. His success showed that Black actors could lead major Hollywood productions, opening the door for future generations of stars to follow in his footsteps.
Awards and Accolades
Over the course of his illustrious career, James Earl Jones received numerous awards and accolades. He won two Tony Awards, an Academy Honorary Award, a Golden Globe, and three Emmy Awards. His status as a cultural icon was further solidified when he received the Kennedy Center Honor in 2002 and the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award in 2009.
In addition to these accolades, Jones was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame and received a lifetime achievement award from the Voice Arts Awards. His powerful voice, versatility, and wide-ranging performances made him a beloved figure, earning him respect and admiration from audiences and his peers alike.
Legacy in Urban Entertainment
James Earl Jones didn’t just dominate mainstream Hollywood—his contributions extended into urban entertainment spaces as well. For generations, his voice and performances have been celebrated in Black communities, where he’s seen not only as a symbol of Black excellence but as a figure who transcends race.
From his roles in films that tackled racial issues like The Great White Hope to his regal presence in projects that celebrated Black culture, Jones was committed to telling stories that mattered. His influence can be felt in the work of contemporary Black actors and filmmakers who continue to draw inspiration from his legacy.
The Final Curtain Call
The passing of James Earl Jones marks the end of an era. Few actors have had the range, the longevity, or the impact that he did. His ability to command a room—whether on stage or through the screen—was unparalleled. His voice will forever echo in some of the most iconic moments in film history, and his legacy will live on through the actors and creators he inspired.
In a world where representation and authenticity matter more than ever, James Earl Jones’s career serves as a reminder of what’s possible when talent, determination, and resilience come together. He was more than an actor—he was a cultural force, and his contributions to entertainment will be remembered for generations to come.
Rest in power, James Earl Jones. Your voice will never be forgotten.
