Mclusky's Good Intentions
Mclusky's Andy "Falco" Falkous
BY JORDAN MAINZER
"Fuck This Band". It's the name of the song Andy "Falco" Falkous and Mclusky have been opening their sets with on their triumphant return to many North American cities, including Chicago last Friday at the Vic. It's an effective calm before the storm of noise and chaos that inevitably enraptures the moshing crowd. And it's an appropriate sentiment, tongue-in-cheek and self-deprecating, referential to the very loud ruckus that presumably caused the initial postponement of these tour dates to begin with. A Molotov cocktail of aural health issues forced Falkous to make fans wait a little bit longer to celebrate 20 years of Mclusky Do Dallas. It was immediately apparent from the opening chords of "Dethink to Survive" that our patience paid off: Falkous and drummer Jack Egglestone donning protective headphones, the band launched into a burst of razor wire guitars and pummeling percussion, and never stopped.
From left to right: Mclusky's Damien Sayell, Jack Egglestone, Falkous
Sayell, Egglestone, & Falkous
The post-hardcore band's influence is wide-reaching. You can hear Falkous' everyman sprechgesang in the cubicle shouts of Pissed Jeans' Matt Korvette, his frantic non-sequiturs in the nervy yelp rock of Squid, both of whom were featured on the house playlist before Mclusky took the stage. But the band continues to be good at its own game, too. Last year, they shared their first new material in 19 years, and they played two of those released songs on Friday, sounding like 2002 just as much as 2023. "Two minutes and forty five seconds is the optimum length of a rock and roll song," Falkous declared, after letting the audience know it was okay not to pretend they like new songs. But "Unpopular Parts of a Pig" is a trademark Mclusky tune, alternating between deceptively melodic shouts and droning chants, plus a loud-quiet-loud dynamic and sardonic lyrics chiding useless platitudes. Thematically and instrumentally, it nestled perfectly between the ugly guitar distortion and Damien Sayell's meaty bass on "Day of the Deadringers", and crowd favorite "Lightsabre Cocksucking Blues". Meanwhile, the blown-out bass of "The Digger You Deep" and unreleased barnburner "Et Tu, Edwards?" gave the crowd a chance to let loose between "She Will Only Bring You Happiness" and "You Should Be Ashamed, Seamus", two The Difference Between You and Me Is That I'm Not on Fire songs that satirize the tortured artist and toxic masculinity.
Sayell, Egglestone, & Falkous
Really, though, to a certain generation of Mclusky fans, Friday first and foremost represented an event we thought would never come. To hear Falkous' introductory chirping on "Without MSG I Am Nothing", Egglestone's brawny thuds on "Chases", and the shout-alongs of "To Hell With Good Intentions" and "Alan Is a Cowboy Killer" was a thrilling exercise in nostalgia for some and disbelief for others. Towards the end of the set, Falkous took the time to thank everyone involved in the show, even those he had met just that night, an act of working class solidarity before his effortless bout of sarcasm: "This cavalcade of sincerity must end soon." Given Falkous' ability to lighten the mood through his well-intentioned derision, it's easy to see why Mclusky continues to be great today.

Mclusky and Ganser at Baby’s All Right
The trio known as Mclusky returned to New York City faster than many of us expected them to by booking an underplay show (courtesy of Saint Vitus presents) at Baby’s All Right on Sunday, March 24, 2024. For their final US tour date, they were joined by Chicago’s Ganser, who joined the tour after Mclusky’s concert at Warsaw.
I learned about the show on March 8th at 10:02AM thanks to an email alert from Oh My Rockness that I set up about two decades ago.* Once that notification hit my inbox, I quickly opened the message and immediately bought tickets via Dice.fm. I then proceeded to text (or DM) everyone I could think of who I knew that went to the Warsaw show to let them know we were getting another round at a more intimate venue before the band returned home. The concert sold out well in advance, which I anticipated as Baby’s has about a third of the capacity of Warsaw. I hadn’t originally planned to have a three concert run to close out March, but thanks to SPRINTS on Friday, Kim Gordon on Saturday night (photos of that available here), and Mclusky now on Sunday, I couldn’t see myself not attending all three.
Kicking off the night at 8:30PM were Ganser (of Chicago, IL) who I’ve been wanting to see for some time now and was very excited to discover on the morning of Thursday, March 21st that they were added to the Dice ticketing page for the show. I had a conflict for their previous NYC performance at Market Hotel and I was overjoyed that I would finally see them live. The band lived up to my expectations and I’m so glad I could finally pick up a copy of their newest EP at the merch table since I previously purchased a digital version via Bandcamp.
Mclusky’s setlist was pretty much the same as Warsaw’s but we also received a bonus song that wasn’t listed. Back on the 7th, we heard “That Man Will Not Hang,” and last night we were given “No Covers” a B-side to their “To Hell With Good Intentions” single which can also be found on their Mcluskyism compilation. Falco declared there would be no encore because they are not French. Before their final song, Damien told the crowd that all three members will be celebrating their birthdays soon and a cake with candles was brought to the stage to commemorate their upcoming birthdays happening within ten days of each other.
Images of last night’s show appear in the gallery on my website here as well as portraits, and scans of both acts’ setlists. Thank you to both Ganser and Mclusky for playing, posing, and for returning to NYC. Also, thank you to the extremely kind person to my left up front who generously handed me a copy of Mclusky’s setlist after they finished their final song.
*Other acts that I set up ages ago that are yielding alerts present day are Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Les Savy Fav, PJ Harvey, CSS, Pretty Girls Make Graves, The Murder City Devils, and The Hives. Much older me appreciates younger me doing that favor and also for having pretty good taste in music.

The Doctor has always been either asexual or ambisexual, long before the LGBTQXYZ+)*()& movement. In the 60s, the flamboyance of Pertwee was intentional by the actor selecting his own style. Playing a fatherly figure, he indicated through his behavior that he was certainly gay and his interaction with The Major was always hinted at being both personal and professional through three iterations.
The next incarnation of The Doctor post-Pertwee, the zany behavior of The Doctor was intended to be a bit more Sherlock with a twist of mania. It was the first time we see The Doctor interested in women to such a degree that his thirst was apparent, but controlled. Romana was who managed to help The Doctor stabilize his personality.
Following that, the next incarnation was certainly bisexual but also asexually leaning. His relationship with the Master took a new meaning when considering the decisions made during their time. This was more muted because of the times and the focus on story and persona.
The next Doctor was asexual. The next after that was straight, very straight. It wasn't until Eggleston until we find another manic Doctor who is flamboyant and fluid in his sexuality, and through admittance, doesn't care. Notable appearance by Captain Jack, the most hyper sexual man in existence, where The Doctor tamps down because Jack is a bit much even for him.
So yes; the same joke repeated is fine but it was written a bit worse. It was very flat, but I can comprehend the context as tow why. The current writers are clearly missing the mark. It may be a British show, but there's no excuse for lazily slapping things together without putting yourself into the mindset of The Doctor.
The Doctor's motivations are not Human in the slightest. His slip ups must be unusual and unexpected. This was close, but not like the scene with Rose. Rose's receipt versus this example, the scene with Rose is unexpected and right off the wall whereas the recent instance is too on-the-nose.
Tricky thing, psychic paper. Yeah. Can't let your mind wander when you're handing it over.

The continued adventures of my Sims; we are getting closer and closer to the actual plot of the opera!!
Whoops, I forgot to make the doors of the mansion off-limits for horses 😂 (I eventually fixed it!)
Struggling a bit, are we, Adina?
Let's go, faster than the wind!
Adina later discovered that she likes horseback riding. So it's official: Adina operacharacter is a horse girl confirmed!!
Awww, looks like Sanook has taken quite a liking towards Atalanta 🥰🥰 (despite the fact that, ya know, that is literally a horse inside a kitchen.)
Adina and Nemorino's first time seeing each other in YEARS, and the first thing they autonomously did was hug 🥰 Their bios show that they're STILL besties 😭
Awww :)
Now that she has plenty of time on her hands, Adina has been focusing on advancing in the Serial Romantic aspiration, including by kissing 10 Sims (which can include hand kisses, but I didn't find that out until later). Here she is making a move on the grocery store guy in Finchwick, who closed his store just to continue his convo with her.
(She's not a Don Giovanni, but one might say that she's sort of exploring around, bc she doesn't make any false promises of commitment.)
Belcore, in addition to working his way to becoming a sergeant, is ALSO working on advancing in the Serial Romantic aspiration. Here he is with his third Cupid's Corner date, Miriam.
I have found that playing Woo-Who?! makes the "courting" process much easier, as it reveals the other players' turn-ons and turn-offs.
Advancing in the 3 first kisses goal.
I looooove Adina's Sexy Witch™ costume 😍 I wish it was one of the options for wearing costumes outside a Spooky Party... (Adina organized a Spooky Party for her friends for Hallowseve Day, which has remained on the calendar autonomously, and is now making another white cat Jack O'Lantern.)
And of course, Nemorino showed up dressed as a pizza delivery guy 😂 Somehow this sums up the opera itself...
Awww, autonomous besties :) (this kinda defeats the purpose of the opera, but whatever.)
lmao, Cassandra Goth and Savannah Price decided to fall asleep on the floaties in the swimming pool, despite the cold weather 😂
Awww, two furry friends getting to know each other 😭
The following day, Adina organized a dinner party for Harvestfest for her tenants (with a tofurkey rather than a regular turkey, bc Giannetta's dad is vegetarian).
aww Giannetta's mom being nice to Principessa. It's rare to see guests being nice with her (*flashbacks*)
Enjoying her mom's fancy aquajet bathtub 🛀
And here she is putting the moves on her childhood neighbor, Imran Watson.
An enchanting introduction for Malcolm Landgraab! (still on her serial kissing mission.)
Atalanta didn't seem to be getting along very well with that random rabbit...
A romantic introduction (different from enchanting introduction) for Mark Eggleston from the Eclectic Arts Household! (the roommate of Leslie Holland, who fought the Mother Plant alongside Dulcamara after he cured her. Also, they moved into San Myshuno and adopted a little girl named Victoria. I like the idea of a child being raised by a group of roommates. Not that it would legally happen irl... 😢)
Duane, you're ruining the moment. (Also that is Luna Villareal that Belcore met on Cupid's Corner, the sister of Hugo Villareal, who was Adina's first boyfriend.)
lmao Adina is washing her hands with her gloves still on (I neglected to have her change from her cold-weather riding habit.)
Also, I got her to go on a date with Tane, and they're now officially partners, but not for long (she has to have had 8 romantic relationships and 3 gold dates to complete the aspiration.)
(oh, and Adina's family's former butler Dominik has unfortunately died 😭 (read it on Neighborhood Stories))
Anyway, I uploaded the young-adult version of Giannetta's family on my gallery, in case anyone wants it.

The legend of McLusky has grown greatly since the the group's initial breakup in 2005.
The release of the three-disc Mcluskyism compilation is no doubt reasonable for much of that prolonged success. So, too, are the members' post-McLusky projects, including Future of the Left.
Formed by ex-members Andrew Falkous and Jack Egglestone shortly after breakup, the group carried on its tradition of sardonic and melodic noise rock. Falkous and Egglestone reformed McLusky in 2014.
The group's second stint is officially longer than its first as of 2024. The group is currently in the midst of an American tour, postponed by two years, due to Falkous' health issues. Here he discusses all of that and more.

Stella Stevens, who co-starred with Elvis Presley in "Girls! Girls! Girls!" and Jerry Lewis in "The Nutty Professor," as well as in the disaster film "The Poseidon Adventure," revealed that she has had Alzheimer's disease since she was 16.
One might expect the female lead in "The Nutty Professor" (1963) or any other Jerry Lewis film to blend into the background, but the New York Times praised her: "It's about a shy gargoyle of a college chemist who brews a miracle mixture, becomes a bland Casanova (periodically), and finally reverts to his shy original self and a part-smitten blonde student, neatly played by Stella Stevens in 1966."
Stevens played a hip, streetwise nun who spars with Rosalind Russell's not-to-be-messed-with character, the Mother Superior of a convent, in "Where Angels Go, Trouble Follows," a 1968 sequel to Rosalind Russell's sharp Rosalind Russell as nun comedy "The Trouble With Angels."
Though she was part of a large ensemble in the 1972 disaster-film classic "The Poseidon Adventure," which also starred Gene Hackman, Red Buttons, Carol Lynley, Roddy McDowall, Shelley Winters, and Jack Albertson, Stevens managed to make her mark in Poseidon, but the film ultimately did not boost Stevens’ feature-film career, and she was soon transitioning to B movies as well as TV movies and guest appearances.
She did, however, get to have fun as the villain in "Cleopatra Jones and the Casino of Gold" (1975), an undercover federal agent played by Tamara Dobson who is "on the trail of two other narcs who have either been killed or kidnapped by the dreaded Dragon Lady, who is played by Stella Stevens with such venomous relish you’d almost think she was enjoying having a supporting role in Peter Bogdanovich’s somewhat misbegotten 1982, she played the corrupt captain of the guards in the women’s prison exploitation picture "Chained Heat," starring Linda Blair, and she subsequently appeared in several low-budget horror films and thrillers.
Stevens produced and directed two films, the 1979 documentary "The American Heroine" and "The Ranch" (1989), which starred her son, actor-producer Andrew Stevens, who also appeared in movies featuring and or executive produced by Andrew Stevens, including "Popstar" in 2005.
Estelle Caro Eggleston was born in Yazoo at four years old; her family relocated to Brooklyn, where she lived with electrician Noble Herman Stephens from 1954 until her divorce in 1957, producing a son at Memphis State College, where she became interested in acting and modelling; she was discovered while performing in a college production of "Bus Stop," and 20th Century Fox offered her a contract.
Stevens made her film debut in 1959's "Say One for Me," starring Bing Crosby and Debbie Reynolds; she was named the Golden Globes' most promising newcomer-female (along with three others) as a result of this appearance, but Fox dropped her contract and picked her up after she was signed to play Appassionata Von Climax, a sexy siren alongside Julie Newmar's Stupefyin' Jones, in the feature adaptation of the novel.
In January 1960, Stevens was Playboy’s Playmate of the Month (she was later featured in Playboy pictorials in 1965 and 1968), and on the magazine’s list of the 100 Sexiest Stars of the 20th Century, Stevens appeared just as her movie career began to hit its stride when she starred opposite Elvis in "Girls! Girls! Girls!"
In the 1970s, she appeared in the "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" TV movie sequel "Wanted: The Sundance Woman" (1976), starring Katharine Stevens. In 1980, Stevens tried series-regular television for the first time with the prime-time soap "Flamingo Road," set in a small town in Florida and starring Morgan Fairchild and Mark Harmon, among others, but the esteemed (for what it was) NBC series was.
Stevens also appeared in the TV movies "The Dukes of Hazzard: Reunion!" (1997) and "Tales From the Hollywood Hills: A Table at Ciro’s," did a 66-episode run on the daytime soap "Santa Barbara" in 1989-90, and recurred on Jake also worked on stage occasionally, including in a touring production of an all-female version of Neil Simon’s "The Odd Couple," in which Stevens played the Oscar Madison character and actress Sandy Dennis played the Felix Ungar character.
A supporter of animal rights, she contributed her time and resources towards cat adoptions and also raised horses and llamas during her marriage to Bob Kulick, who died in 2020.
She is survived by her son, Andrew Stevens, a film producer, director, and actor, and three grandchildren.

Thank you @umyeaharts for the mailbox treat today. For the last 7 years Artist - Film maker Thomas Campbell has been making a self funded skateboarding movie, mainly shot on a 16mm film -- called - Ye Olde Destruction (YOD).... with a solid grip of land sled aficionados building and skating DIY spots, some street action, pools, and other stuff. The movie is really about capturing sessions and the movement of the life and happenings in these situations. Part of the theme and vehicle that propels the film is the driving of two old cars ( one 70's Cadillac and one black Ford Station wagon) two squads travel around in these cars skating, building spots, creating different skating scenarios, sometimes skating the cars and basically wilding out in said vehicles. In some ways the movie falls into the classic genera of the car movies movie motif ( Bullitt, Mad Maxx or Brown Bunny). The Film is presented in brutal but some how dream scape - ish editing style. Thee entire score of YOD is an originally crafted musical piece by the L.A. Based duo No Age, which turns the guts and hold them there for the duration. Sergej Vutuc the world renowned Berlin based artist - zine maker adding his jacked frenetic script to the mix, as a subtle nod to deep zine realms. Campbell enlisted an A list team of lens men to help him capture the motion picture scenarios and shreddings - French Fred, Jon Miner, Mike Manzoori, Connor Wyse among others. The film embodies and unveils the inter web of a community, a community of outlaws non the less. But a community. featured YOD skaters ------ Evan Smith, Jon Dickson, Jason Adams, Rick Mccrank, Max Schaaf, Caswell Berry, Brent Atchley, Ellisa Steamer, Ray Barbee, Al Partanen, Omar Salazar, Jackson Pilz, Robbie Russo, Ben Raemers, Chris Russell, Willis Kimble, Cody Chapman, Rayne Beres, John Worthington, Emmanuel Guzman, Cole Wilson, Roger Mihalko, Tony Miorana, Aron Suski, Mark Suciu, Andy Roy, Eli Williams, Israel Forbes, Nick Garcia, Oski Rozenberg ,Barker Barrett, Dennis Buzenitz, Tony Trujillo, Sid Melvin, Zarosh Eggleston, Zach Wallin, Ishod wair, Chico Brennes, Louie Barletta, Collin Provost, Stefan Janoski, Raven Tershy, T Funk, Taylor https://www.instagram.com/p/B9zbhh1gUuNIb-omeAd-jAAS25TkSXCYI_4-380/?igshid=o24piah0kyoy

Arrowhead, Pewaukee combine for 13 state wrestlers after shining at sectional
NEW BERLIN – In similar fashion as last week, Arrowhead and Pewaukee’s wrestling teams stood out on the big stage.
The Warhawks and Pirates combined for nine first place and four second place finishes at the WIAA Division 1 Wrestling Sectional at New Berlin West on Saturday afternoon. Those finishes guarantee that both schools will combine for 13 participants at the state tournament.
Arrowhead was dominant again in the middle weight classes, as they took all four top spots from 138-160 pounds and six overall first-place finishes. The four consecutive victories were all pins, including three straight first-period pins from 145-160. The Warhawks were the top scoring team with 190.0 points.
“The idea is to peak this time of year,” Arrowhead coach Jeremy Miller said. “I think we’re right there. Now, it’s just a matter of finishing through, finishing strong at the state tournament.”
Sophomore Mitchell Mesenbrink, who has battled a concussion throughout the season and returned for his first action during last Saturday’s regional at Waukesha South, swept through the 138-pound bracket with a forfeit and two third-period pins. He earned his forfeit in the quarterfinal before taking down Milwaukee Bradley Tech senior Fred Eggleston with just under 16 seconds left in the semifinal. Mesenbrink then earned a tough fall in just over five minutes against Waukesha West junior C.J. Grisar for his top finish.
“There’s been a lot of work behind the scenes lately,” Mesenbrink said. “The past two months, having that concussion and everything, making sure that I had to keep coming back. I think the biggest thing was giving gratitude to allowing myself to have this situation, to be able to wrestle. Through my family, Coach Miller and the special guys on my team, they were able to help me come back.”
Senior Keegan O’Toole continued his undefeated run by breezing through the 160-pound bracket with three first-period pins. He advanced to the final by pinning Greenfield junior Ryan Schroeter and Whitnall/Greendale senior Ryan Murphy in the first minute. O’Toole then made quick work of Muskego junior Evan Huckstorf in the final, earning the fall in 1:17.
“I just have the same approach every time I go on the mat,” O’Toole said. “I just believe in my coaches, believe in my training and be relentless.”
Warhawks’ junior Jack Ganos had two first period pins and a decision victory to win the 145-pound bracket. Freshman Noah Mulvaney had a similar route to his first-place finish as Mesenbrink with two pins following a forfeit in the 152-pound class. 182-pound junior Mason Diel had a pin and technical fall to reach the final, where he received a medical forfeit. Senior Jeffrey Pfannerstill rounded out Arrowhead’s victories with a tough 195-pound sweep that consisted of two major decisions and a decision victory.
Seniors Jonah Luther and Adam Polczynski took second place in the 126 and 170-pound tournaments, respectively, to earn state berths.
Pewaukee finished second with 114.0 points and did some of its best work in the lighter weight classes. 106-pound sophomore Andrew Martin and 120-pound freshman Jacob Bruner each took first place. Martin had a pin following a major decision while Bruner followed a pin with a tough decision in his final.
“We thought the least we should get was three sectional qualifiers and two seconds, and that’s what we got,” Pirates’ coach Ed Kurth said. “Could have been a little better, but we’re satisfied because we got the minimum of what we were expecting.”
“He’s really turned the corner the last two weeks after losing the conference championship,” said Kurth of Bruner.
Senior Joe Sklenar, a 170-pound participant, pinned Milwaukee Ronald Reagan’s Louis Smith in just over 30 seconds before earning an 8-0 major decision against New Berlin West/Eisenhower junior Nico Vink to get to the final. In the championship round, Sklenar emerged with a 7-3 decision over Polczynski.
“I kind of just stuck to the game plan and did what I know I could do,” Sklenar said. “I’ve still got some work to do before state in those few days.”
Sophomore John Mohr earned a state berth after taking second in the 195-pound bracket after falling to Pfannerstill in the final. In the final match of the sectional, 145-pound junior Noah Martin outdueled Reagan’s Layth Jaraba in a 7-0 2nd-place wrestle back decision to give the Pirates a fifth state qualifier.
“Mohr and Noah Martin wrestled good all day,” Kurth said.
Muskego has three wrestlers going to state and took fifth with 75.5 points. Senior Alex Wintheiser had a pin and a decision following a quarterfinal bye to win the 126-pound bracket. 132-pound sophomore Austin Elger and Huckstorf are both second-place qualifiers.
West earned two state qualifiers. 113-pound sophomore Magnus Kuokkanen breezed through his bracket with three first-period pins. Grisar is a second-place state qualifier after his loss to Mesenbrink. The Wolverines finished sixth with 68.0 points.
Host school New Berlin West/Eisenhower, which finished seventh with 46.0 points, has qualifiers in the two heaviest classes. 220-pound junior Noah Nieberle took second place in his bracket and heavyweight senior Donoven Acevedo earned a first-period pin and 3-1 decision following a bye to win his tournament.
South freshman Lucas Ryan earned the Blackshirts, who finished eighth with 37.0 points, their lone state berth after a first-period pin over Hamilton freshman Tyler Moore in the 106-pound wrestle back. Ryan had an automatic berth in the semifinals, where he knocked off West freshman Xavier Guerrero in a 11-1 major decision before falling in the final against Andrew Martin.
“I knew that the coaching I had this week and all the effort that I’ve put in my whole life was going to help me win that match,” Ryan said.
Hamilton finished 10th as a team in the sectional with 27.0 points.
