Aaagh!! Reading your response to my ask just made me curious as to what you think a partner/party member quest with Riley would be like (as I am writing this, only now the question of what archangel would you have to fight occurs to me but now I wanna know)

Ok this one's even more spoilery.

At first I thought like 'archangel of envy' or something like that, but I couldn't think of a plot that i liked for that one that didn't feel like a lesser rehash of her arc in beastieball. Then I really got to thinking about Jack and Helia and I realized I didn't have to pull Riley out after her beastieball story was over.

You meet Riley in the cave just after you see Picksie for the first time. She says that she wants to record Picksie in real life, and asks for your help doing so. She loves transforming so much, she says, and wants to try being that rare creature.

As you travel with her, Beastieball fans will notice that she's kind of...not Riley. She's kind and helpful but she doesn't have the same moxie or justified rage. She's polite. Too polite. Stuff happens to the two of you and the laughs them off. She's almost a little too selfless, and little too sugary sweet, on the edge of being creepy.

In Harbortown, you get a lead about a picksie sighting and go there, but get attacked by a masked figure named Jack. Jack is trying to become a captain and her tapes are a glittery faerious an anathema. Jack's personality a lot more abrasive than Riley's. She says mean things about Riley, dragging her being a bad friend. You ask Riley about Jack after the encounter, and Riley at first says she's just someone from her past.

Riley wants to ask Ianthe how Jack's doing on her quest to become a captain, and you take her there. Ianthe admits that Jack is strong, but she doesn't personally want her to be a captain. To be a captain, you have to be a people person, too. You have to want to help people, and Jack doesn't seem to have that. Riley is quiet, and then tells you she needs to tell you something, pulling you into the cafe.

Riley admits that Jack and she used to be the same person, and tells a bit of her backstory. Shortly after arriving in New Wirral she encountered a 'weird creature' that split her into two people, putting all of her undesirable traits into Jack. Riley is nice, Jack is mean. Riley is cooperative, and Jack is competitive. Jack is also always angry, and Riley can't seem to muster up anger. This is why Jack is trying to become a captain and Riley isn't. Jack wants to prove herself better than the captains.

She explains that just before she left her world, she and her friend made a plan, but she did something to hinder her friend and was mean doing it. Then, she found out that she can her friend's plan was pointless, and that her hindrance was pointless, too. I'm going to have Riley get isekaied just after she found out about Marlin's involvement with the stadium, and just before she confessed to Ace. Riley felt so mixed up and so confused and was so scared to tell her best friend that New Wirral pulled her in.

She asks if you are disgusted with her and you reply in a way that indicates that the split is concerning to you. She seems surprised to hear that, and then admits she misses having Jack as a part of her. It's nice to be agreeable, but she misses getting angry about things, especially important things. She also worries that Jack can't make friends because she's so mean to everyone.

You then go on to tell her that you believe the 'weird creature' is actually an archangel, and you need to defeat those to get home. Riley thinks about this, and the next time you camp, she says that she wants to help you defeat this archangel. She wants to have Jack back, rage and all.

Jack finds you and Riley again, and tells her that "Crescind" knows what Riley is trying to do, and that Jack refuses because she hates Riley so much. After fighting her, Riley has a heart to heart with Jack, telling her that what they did was bad, and but it doesn't have to define them. That everyone makes mistakes, and its how you own up to those mistakes that matters. That its makes sense for them to be Ace's friend and to be jealous at the same time. Basically, they convince each other to forgive themselves.

She wins Jack over and they come back together as the real Riley. Riley is just getting used to being all one person again when the ground opens up beneath you and you end up at a station with a furious archangel bearing over you.

The archangel is Helia's diametric opposite, the egregore of division. I'm not sure if Helia the goddess has a counterpart, so I decided to give him the name Crescind. It's a combination of crescent and the greek verb scindo, to cut. I wanted to come up with something that brought to mind both the moon and the function of this archangel.

Ancient etymologists also (incorrectly) assumed that scindo was related to the word Scythe, a crescent shaped blade used for cutting tall grass. This is why we spell Scythe with a silent c today. I found that interesting, and I decided that the second c in Crescind would be silent, cressind instead of crechind.

...I really like etymology and using roots to make up words.

Not sure what they look like. Maybe he's a multiheaded beast, or a pair of scissors that look like moons? Idk.

Crescind says that her self hatred was what called him to her, and calls her ungrateful for her 'gift'. He then says that that he will cut her into tiny pieces. Riley laments that she's going to die just as she's forgiven herself. She realizes that she wants nothing more than to see Ace again and apologize. This thought of making things right with Ace gives you both the power to fuse for the first time.

After you kill Crescind, you are free to keep Riley as a partner and even romance her. If you visit the ranger headquarters with Riley, Ianthe will have a speech bubble over her head, and some extra dialog about how she would be glad to let Riley become a captain now that she's 'pulled herself together'. Riley asks how she knew, and Ianthe is like "oh i have my ways'.

I feel like the campfire scenes that give you hearts would be her sort of coming to the conclusion that Ace is not required to forgive her, and that she can be ok even if they don't. Most importantly, she forgives herself, now. I like the idea that Riley returns to her world at almost exactly she left, and this is when she calls Ace to confess

Cannot stress enough don't look if you've not yet seen who your masked rival is.

What if Jack was Riley's deadname and she was hoping we'd recognize her from her deadname....

But we fully forgot her deadname because she's our bestie Riley and we never actually called her anything else, and it's a common name too.

So it's fully a shock to us and Riley is just ?????

Not even a big headcanon it would just be funny.

Also to those who critique that we've been friends for years but haven't played her favorite game yet: I also have favorite games I've not dragged my moirails into yet. Either I need to show them in-person because it's not the kind of game they typically enjoy, or I just haven't had the time because I'm a far bigger gamer and I only reco 1-3 a year (and this year IS beastieball). Fr though I've never dragged anyone into Binding of Isaac really and I have a tattoo and everything.
