it's so funny to spend my online time in small or inactive fandoms and look at statistics because i'm like yeah... i'm kind of a big deal... people know me... i have many leather-bound volumes... and not a single one of my fics crack 300 kudos (& very few over 100). the person i reblogged from topped out over 9,000! what's it like to write long fics for popular fandoms? is it cool?

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

i do now! and it's awesome! for a long time i was intimidated by praise and had a hard time responding, but my brain works now and i really enjoy exchanging comments that turn into long threads of headcanon back-and-forth and sometimes new friends.

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

oh god PLEASE let me unburden my soul about Twilight (sga, john/elizabeth). it's so uncharacteristically hopeless for me -- far future fic, complicated family dynamics, elizabeth has dementia and john is estranged from their son... really no one is having a good time. i think it's interesting and a cool departure from my usual writing style, but it's also a big sad mess.

i still feel sooooo guilty about these two thousand words of misery that i REGULARLY think about writing a sequel where john and his son fix it with time travel and mend fences. like i lie awake at night worrying about these characters because one time in 2007 i didn't give them a happy ending and suggested john might not break the bad father generational cycle. normal fic writer behavior.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Weaving Loose Ends (sg-1, sam/jack)! i love happy and hopeful endings but i think of all of them, this one is the most resolved and least complicated.

8. Do you get hate on fic?

nope. oh!!!! there was the one time when i caused Big Drama in a corner of the Dancing With The Stars fandom by turning people's headcanons into rpf, which everyone liked until one included porn. people got so heated with each other over this one smut fic (doxing! splinter factions! a fandom schism!) but somehow no one was ever actually mean to me. i didn't even get blocked or banned for my rpf transgressions, i was just standing there at the eye of the storm. so... i guess the answer is still no??

9. Do you write smut?

yes! i should probably write more, though. it has been all slow and gauzy the past few years, somebody should really get railed pretty soon.

nope.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

i don't think so. happily toiling in obscurity.

back in the x-files days i think someone translated some of my doggett/reyes fics for a spanish archive, so those might still be out there.

no i haven't!! i am really not doing well collecting my fic writer girl scout badges here!!

john sheppard/elizabeth weir my beloved.

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but probably won’t?

i have 10k of an sg-1 episode-by-episode soulmate fic that started really strong and i would love to share someday, but i lack staying power so it will surely just go to seed in my dropbox forever!!

16. What are your writing strengths?

hopefully character complexity and dialogue. dialogue is interesting in fanfic, because the dialogue on many TV shows is really different than how real humans speak (it's scripted to be clearer, more concise and direct, uninterrupted, etc), so it's a fun challenge to balance that and get something that sounds both in-character and realistic.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

long fics!

the big related weakness is that i find it incredibly difficult to keep writing on a fic after i show it to anyone (as a sneak peek, or because i want feedback / encouragement / brainstorming help). i lose steam on my own, but posting or inviting other people into the process is like pouring sugar in the gas tank. why is that!! how do i fix this!!!

and i don't know if this is a "writing weakness" or an "egregious personal character flaw" but i sure did finish an exchange fic this year literally forty seconds before reveals, so that's... pretty bad.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

SO SCARY aughhhh my fear of Being Wrong really nukes me here. it doesn't even have to be a real language. it's like the ghost of JRR Tolkein himself is standing over my shoulder telling me that if i don't backwards engineer an entire proto-latinate space language instead of just chucking words into google translate and calling it Ancient i'm committing unpardonable sins.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

star trek! first internet-published fics were x-files, but first limited-print-edition fics were xeroxed hand-bound voyager stories my sister and i would give as "gifts" to family friends (and then stand there staring at them while they read the first few pages and told us how clever and creative we were and promised to "read the rest later").

20. Favourite fic you’ve written?

new answer! i have always answered this before with ain't no sunshine (sga, john/elizabeth) or career day (sg-1, mini!otp), but i think i really stuck the landing this year on pieces (sga, john/elizabeth). which, incidentally, is the one i finished forty seconds before reveals so i'm definitely not going to learn anything from that narrow escape.

And don't mind chibi pumpkin man in the corner offering them a flower. @phantom-wolf and I have naturally made this an OT3 au where once again Alfred is the headless horseman in case anyone didn't see my Alfred as the horseman drawing this rendition of headless horseman Al is just as sweet and stupid. He's purely a himbo and they love him. And he reaches a point where he has more than pumpkin seeds for brain cells and loves them back.

Today I was reflecting on my OTPs.

I have had a bunch of favourite pairings over the years (from Jack & Rose in Titanic, to Elizabeth & Will Turner in Pirates of Caribbean, to Aragorn & Arwen or Aragorn & Èowyn) but I was mostly satisfied with the ending so it wasn’t something I had to root for or overanalyse.

And when I came to think of real OTPs I’ve had only 3.

1. Arthur and Morgana from Merlin BBC. Has this been probably my favourite OTP of all time and also the most disappointing? Quite possibly but the fact that I still read all the new fanfics about them says something. This OTP was all about what could have been. They were siblings yes but we only know that in the middle of season 3 and by then everything had already gone wrong and it was late not to ship them. Morgana’s descent into full darkness was probably the most disappointing of it all. I have read most of the Arthurian novels and the amount of possibilities was just endless. If only the writers have kept the development of early season 1! This is my OTP where they grow up together, fighting and bickering until one day they start to have a crush on each other and the fairytale vibe (Swan Princess animation) will forever be most dear to me.

2. Emma Swan and Killian Jones from Once Upon a Time. This is my perfect OTP. Damn but how much did I suffer during season 3. And I knew the true love concept of the tv show could only be achieved with them. The falling in love arc was absolute perfection. Alas by the end it got a tiny bit boring but that’s to be expected after so many seasons.

3. Daemon and Rhaenyra from House of the Dragon. Is this the most gothic and twisted out of all my OTPs? Maybe. It’s definitely the least “fairytale-ish” and yet there’s a poetic tragic element to it that makes it so compelling to me.

I am a huge Disney and fairytale fan but I have never known what makes a pairing become a OTP for me but if I analyse all 3 OTPs have in common the light vs darkness element, a morally grey or evil character, the redemption potential and the SOULMATISM! The parallels of Arthur and Morgana were always powerful, they were on different sides but still so similar, they shared the same fighting movements, the same stubbornness, the drive and sense of justice for what they believed in. Emma and Killy also had so many parallels, Emma was a pirate of some sort in her younger years and that created a sense of kindred spirits that pulled them together and made them understand each other. And house of the dragon is a very different style altogether, it has very little romance and yet the parallels of Daemon and Rhaenyra could never go unnoticed, not even to Viserys, when he said that they are both chaotic, fierce and restless, with the blood of the dragon burning inside them (even if I don’t see it much with older Rhaenyra honestly). So one might say it’s all about the parallels for me and the unspoken connection that can never go away.

Elizabeth Weir for the character headcanons!

Sorry I didn't answer this forever. I had almost finished my response when my browser crashed and I lost all progress, and I had to recover emotionally.

1: sexuality headcanon 

I want everyone to be bi, always, and Elizabeth would definitely be bi.

2: otp 

Teyla. They understand the stresses of responsibility and they have both so much in common and so much to learn from one another.

3: brotp 

So many options, but I love the idea that she and Jack have actually become really close friends. And I want them to play pranks so well that no one even suspects they had a hand in them, except Chuck and Walter, who know everything.

4: notp 

I'm not actually sure who she's shipped with ever besides John and Teyla, so there's nothing I've come across that I just can't get behind. So, my normal Atlantis notps: Kolya and any Wraith.

5: first headcanon that pops into my head 

If she and Woolsey were in charge of Atlantis at the same time (or if they'd both been on Earth during the Return), they'd get drunk on fancy wine together and go kidnap their dogs from their exes.

6: one way in which I relate to this character

Being in charge and getting people to listen to you is hard.

7: thing that gives me secondhand embarrassment about this character

The war crimes. I'm not sure that's really embarrassment, but I cringe when it comes to the point where she's willing to let Ronon torture Kavanaugh and she shouldn't have thought the whole Michael thing was ever reasonable.

8: cinnamon roll or problematic fave?

Uh, considering the war crimes she might be a problematic fave, but I think in my heart of hearts she's a cinnamon roll with just a few tiny (major) issues.

7. Jack Sparrow and Angelica

I could see where the writers were going but I personally don't ship it. There was some chemistry (I could see them going for competitive haters) but for me, Jack flows better without a love interest. Not to mention, there's no future since Jack left her to die.

(By the ways, I'd totes marry Penelope Cruz. Javier, you lucky fella.)

6. Philip and Syrena

It has potential but there was no chemistry and very forced scenes. Maybe it would've worked with different actors or a better paced love story? There is no future since she's gotta live underwater and he's a hooman. How they gonna spend time together?

5. Elizabeth Swann and James Norrington

My boy just can't catch a break can he? Poor lad. I'm glad he stood aside when she chose Will. The fact that he died for her speaks volumes about how much he cares for her, even if it's not requited. (Just a reminder, it's okay if a woman doesn't love you back. That's life.)

4. Davy Jones and Calypso (Tia Dalma)

I wanted to put this higher except that I know how this ship sinks. The fact that Calypso was the only thing that could turn Davy Jones human again 😭😭 but it was clear that they were pretty toxic. He ripped out his heart to forget her and she cursed him. I don't really know who to blame but I'm leaning towards Davy.

3. Henry Turner and Carina Smyth

A bit rushed but I can live with it. So much chemistry and their scenes were so wholesome. Philip and Syrena were like an underdeveloped rip-off of Willabeth so Henrina was a refreshing take. Willabeth are the soft lovers who pine over each other whereas Henrina are the arguing teens who will fuck or fight. They had so much in common and yet they were so different. He's an energetic cinnamon roll and she's a spunky, done-with-life gal. AHHHHHH! I can see a future of bickering and sexual tension before they finally get married. (Side note: the way that she's Barbossa's daughter and he's the Turners' son haha)

2. Hector Barbossa and Margaret Smyth

Hear me out! Hear me out!! The cold, ruthless Hector Barbossa found a woman he loved enough to have a child with?? It's a fucking miracle. And unlike Davy Jones and Calypso, he still loved her long after they were separated. Had she lived and he didn't have to give up Carina, I think Barbossa would've been a very different man (the daddy vibes are real lmao I'll see myself out).

Mostly music and other movies and shows that I happen to watch. I’m always likely to write more if I’ve just finished watching a movie I really like or if I wrapped up a show. Maybe that’s cheating, but whatever.

You know, I wanna say it’s Persephone by sunflowerb​ (because that is a fantastic fic that will forever be iconic in the HTTYD fandom) but truthfully the answer I’m feeling right now is The Sacred 28 by @wytchennstychen. Yes. There are 3 Fanfictions in particular on them I love and reread every so often.

5: Why is 1 so important?

To me? This was one of my first ships, one oft he first I wrote fanfiction and it came back to me after twelve years and it has such a great chemistry…

To the fandom? This ship gives the whole HP canon so much more complexity, it explains Albus‘ actions, as questionable as they were, it makes Gellert such a great villain – and it became canon after all.

6: Is 9 a funny ship or a serious ship?

Canon-wise this is a crack ship, but you can only treat it as serious ship when you want to ship them.

7: Out of all of your ships listed, which ship has the most chemistry?

They all have different, great types of chemistry, I really cannot rank that.

8: Out of all of the ships, which ship has the strongest bond?

Goethe and Schiller. Honestly, their letters alone…

9: How many times have you read/watched 10’s fandom?

At the time I shipped this the most, quite a lot (only the German fandom at the time, though). Recently, not at all.

Grindeldore was one of my first ships and the one that I have shipped actively the longest.

In terms of how long a pair is together… well. Henry and Adam. Forever.

Ohhhh, a lot of times in my head. In canon, they are not together.

That’s basically what Jack and James were doing all along. So – 2.

My Loves in Fiction and Fanfiction

Hey everyone! I think this is the first actual original post that I’ve written on here, everything else is just the wonderful work of many talented others that bring me small joys here and there. It dawned on me that while this is a Zutara tumblr first and foremost, I do have several other pairings mixed in with the bunch. So I figured I lost out my favorite pairings in 24 years of books/tv shows/ movie love:

1) Zuko and Katara:

Obviously they are my OTP, and will always be in endgame in my heart. I could talk days about them, and the works of @theadamantdaughter, @beanaroony, and the rest of the glorious posse of creative masters that have blessed our lives with their works of Zutara, and will in a later post. But they are what brought me to tumblr, and they are the reason I remain. Fire and Water, Earth and Air, Sword and Fan forever.

2. Tommy Oliver and Kimberly Ann Hart

Surprising fact, I love Power Rangers. Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers was a favorite of mine when I was little, and the Darker Shade of Green series by UnromanticPoetrss on fanfic.com is one of the most spectacular reimaginings of a series that I’ve ever read, and reinstigated my love for them. I loved the campiness of it all when I was a kid, and the darker AUs and reimaginings in Archive of Our omIwn and fanfiction.com brings it all together. In keeping with Power Ranger couples I also enjoy Wes and Jen from Time Force, Trent and Kira from Dino Thunder, and the Jack/Sky friendship in SPD is wonderful, especially with Sky’s story arc. And Magna Defender just looks badass!

3. Shiro and Princess Allura

Only just finished season 3 of Voltron Legendary Defender, and what can I say I’m hooked on these two. Klance and Piro have my respect and at times my adulation, but Shallura has my love!

4. Bruce Wayne and Princess Diana (Wonder Woman)

Justice League the Animated series is by far the best cartoon adaption of a comic book series ever done. Period. And the thing that holds it together is amazing storytelling and writing, the juxtaposition of Superman and Batman with their developing friendship and differing thoughts on justice, the hints of romance (ugh angst is my shit) between Bruce and Diana, and the real pull and feel of the other characters, ie Green Lantern and Hawkgirl. But Bruce and Diana take the cake for being the best part!

5. Wolverine and Storm/Jean Grey

I enjoy the tension that existed between Logan and Jean in the Fox cartoon and it’s comics, but when I think about character developments, X-Men Schism, and underlying insecurities, I just love Logan and Ororo. His abrasiveness and snark match perfectly with her command and collection, and makes for wonderful interactions. Also Kurt would be the greatest best man ever! Also Logan as a father figure to younger female teammates is one of my favorite parts of his character. His a rough dude, but he loves Laura, Jubilee, and Kitty, and would straight mess up anyone who would think of doing them harm, while also letting them fight their own battles :)

6. Rey and Kylo Ren

I see a lot of redemption arc qualities in this pairing that could be similar to Zutara, really I’m just a sucker for a strong female character who can see past the villainy or flaws in another and bring them to the light, and kick their ass when they act up. It goes both ways, make and female, but I think it’s very powerful. Cliche, yes. Wonderful, yes.

7. Master Chief and Cortana

Halo 4 was amazing because it focused on the relationship between Cortana and Chief and the lengths he’ll go to in order to try and save her, and the sacrifice she makes for him. Their ending scene together in heartbreaking, and though Guardians left a lot to be desired, I do hope they find a way to bridge the human AI gap. Once again a female who can bring emotion, strength, and perspective to a grizzled and war hardened veteran. It’s applicable in my life and that’s why I love it so.

Ugh, I loved Elizabeth, too so my interest in the show waned as well, but I stuck with it 'til the end. Can't say I liked it that much in the end (but apparently the story continued in books and they get Elizabeth back & it's pretty McSheppy, too) but the fandom & fics are absolutely amazing. & McShep is still a big OTP the same thing for SG-1, tbh. I liked the second team much more than the ending of SGA but still the original four was a fave.

McShep was never my ship (Rodney annoyed me too much in the beginning, and I’ve never been into “they snipe because they love each other” pairings) - I’d much rather have seen Sheppard and Elizabeth... I loved her so much! Nice to know they brought her back. 

But yeah, SG-1, original foursome, will forever be the best! (And as far as I’m concerned, Sam/Jack is canon. *g*)

How I feel about this character

oh gosh I love Phryne.

Jack Robinson but also Elizabeth Macmillan. 

My non-romantic OTP for this character

Phryne and Dot forever and ever and ever. Their friendship is just So Good and it grows as they do and I love it so much. 

My unpopular opinion about this character

I don’t think I have one? I mean, I think she’ll try pretty hard to be monogamous for Jack’s sake, but also maybe that it won’t work because that’s not how she is (I also think that maybe Jack would be more open to non-monogamy than she thinks, but that’s my unpopular Jack opinion I guess). 

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.

Canon queerness? I obviously headcanon her as very bisexual, but I would’ve loved something on screen (and not even a romance, but a comment, a conversation with Mac, etc.). Also it’s been a while since I watched (I’ve rewatched some first and second season, but never any third), but I remember the last season being slightly unsatisfactory, especially vis-a-vis her relationship with her father, but that’s SUPER informed by my own shitty relationship with my own shitty father so I’m not sure how much of that is real versus just how I felt while watching.
