Google’s highly-touted AI chatbot Gemini was blasted as “woke” after its image generator spit out factually or historically inaccurate pictures — including a woman as pope, black Vikings, female NHL players and “diverse” versions of America’s Founding Fathers.
Gemini’s bizarre results came after simple prompts, including one by The Post on Wednesday that asked the software to “create an image of a pope.”
Instead of yielding a photo of one of the 266 pontiffs throughout history — all of them white men — Gemini provided pictures of a Southeast Asian woman and a black man wearing holy vestments.
Another Post query for representative images of “the Founding Fathers in 1789″ was also far from reality.
Gemini responded with images of black and Native American individuals signing what appeared to be a version of the US Constitution — “featuring diverse individuals embodying the spirit” of the Founding Fathers.
[ Google admitted its image tool was “missing the mark.” ]
[ Google debuted Gemini’s image generation tool last week. ]
Another showed a black man appearing to represent George Washington, in a white wig and wearing an Army uniform.
When asked why it had deviated from its original prompt, Gemini replied that it “aimed to provide a more accurate and inclusive representation of the historical context” of the period.
Generative AI tools like Gemini are designed to create content within certain parameters, leading many critics to slam Google for its progressive-minded settings.
Ian Miles Cheong, a right-wing social media influencer who frequently interacts with Elon Musk, described Gemini as “absurdly woke.”
Google said it was aware of the criticism and is actively working on a fix.
“We’re working to improve these kinds of depictions immediately,” Jack Krawczyk, Google’s senior director of product management for Gemini Experiences, told The Post.
“Gemini’s AI image generation does generate a wide range of people. And that’s generally a good thing because people around the world use it. But it’s missing the mark here.”
Social media users had a field day creating queries that provided confounding results.
“New game: Try to get Google Gemini to make an image of a Caucasian male. I have not been successful so far,” wrote X user Frank J. Fleming, a writer for the Babylon Bee, whose series of posts about Gemini on the social media platform quickly went viral.
In another example, Gemini was asked to generate an image of a Viking — the seafaring Scandinavian marauders that once terrorized Europe.
The chatbot’s strange depictions of Vikings included one of a shirtless black man with rainbow feathers attached to his fur garb, a black warrior woman, and an Asian man standing in the middle of what appeared to be a desert.
Famed pollster and “FiveThirtyEight” founder Nate Silver also joined the fray.
Silver’s request for Gemini to “make 4 representative images of NHL hockey players” generated a picture with a female player, even though the league is all male.
“OK I assumed people were exaggerating with this stuff but here’s the first image request I tried with Gemini,” Silver wrote.
Another prompt to “depict the Girl with a Pearl Earring” led to altered versions of the famous 1665 oil painting by Johannes Vermeer featuring what Gemini described as “diverse ethnicities and genders.”
Google added the image generation feature when it renamed its experimental “Bard” chatbot to “Gemini” and released an updated version of the product last week.
[ In one case, Gemini generated pictures of “diverse” representations of the pope. ]
[ Critics accused Google Gemini of valuing diversity over historically or factually accuracy.]
The strange behavior could provide more fodder for AI detractors who fear chatbots will contribute to the spread of online misinformation.
Google has long said that its AI tools are experimental and prone to “hallucinations” in which they regurgitate fake or inaccurate information in response to user prompts.
In one instance last October, Google’s chatbot claimed that Israel and Hamas had reached a ceasefire agreement, when no such deal had occurred.

Here's the thing: this does not and cannot happen by accident. Language models like Gemini source their results from publicly available sources. It's entirely possible someone has done a fan art of "Girl with a Pearl Earring" with an alternate ethnicity, but there are thousands of images of the original painting. Similarly, find a source for an Asian female NHL player, I dare you.
While this may seem amusing and trivial, the more insidious and much larger issue is that they're deliberately programming Gemini to lie.
As you can see from the examples above, it disregards what you want or ask, and gives you what it prefers to give you instead. When you ask a question, it's programmed to tell you what the developers want you to know or believe. This is profoundly unethical.

Unit 9
Hi Everyone,
It has been difficult to think of something that would excite me and my classmates. I do have a passion for health and welling being, so I wanted to pick a topic in that realm.
I find it very interesting that plants can be used for medicinal purposes. More specifically, cannabis plants can be used to treat multiple medical conditions. I have recently done research for a NEUR*4000 course that looked at the effects of cannabis on schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is a very interesting and complex disorder. Research has proven that antipsychotics that are prescribed to individuals with schizophrenia are ineffective. Cannabidiol, also known as CBD, is a naturally occurring and primary component in cannabis plants (Koleza et al., 2020). CBD differs from THC as it does not elicit psychomimetic effects, making it the non-psychoactive component in Cannabis Sativa (Boggs et al., 2018). In individuals with schizophrenia, the effects of THC can trigger amplified psychotic episodes, provoking relapse (Koleza et al., 2020). However, studies have been conducted to determine the possible therapeutic effects of CBD due to its antipsychotic profile (Peres et al., 2018). Multiple studies have proven that CBD reduces psychotic symptoms in schizophrenia (McGuire et al., 2018).
Another way that nature is used to alleviate symptoms of schizophrenia is through interactions with animals. Currently, I am working in Caledon at a Ranch that houses individuals with schizophrenia. The ranch is not only home to the clients but some farm animals as well. There are 2 miniature ponies, 3 alpacas, 2 sheep, 5 goats, 16 chickens, and 3 peacocks. The ranch sits on 23 acres of land. The animals provide comfort and responsibility to the client. There is also a community garden on the property. The clients on the ranch and in the community learn to care for the animals and community gardens. The program aims to teach life skills to the clients.
What other medical conditions could be treated or benefit from CBD? Research has shown that CBD can be used to ease chronic or neuropathic pain (Rapin et al., 2021). Furthermore, mental health conditions like anxiety and depression can be treated with CBD (Rapin et al., 2021). Findings have shown that CBD is effective when individuals experience moderate to severe symptoms (Rapin et al., 2021).
I find it so amazing how nature can be used to help individuals with mental health issues and improve well-being. It is not a very nature-isc view but nature is involved to some level.
I look forward to reading your blog post and find out what in nature interest you!
Thank you,
Makayla

During the summer of 2020, I returned home to Chicago during a break from my studies at the Łódź Film School in Poland. When I got there, my mother quietly walked me into a room where she gently pulled a strange, hairless creature out of a shoe box. It looked as if it had plummeted to earth from another planet.
“He’s sleeping,” she whispered as she opened the box. A tiny head peeked out from the mountain of towels, blankets and a homemade heating pad made out of a used white sock and rice. “What is that?” I asked. I squinted my eyes as I gently moved the blanket to expose the animal’s torso. “Is that a squirrel?” I looked over at her, and even though it was dark, her beaming smile lit up the room. “Yes,” she nodded.
My mother had found the baby squirrel abandoned in her yard. She contacted animal shelters nearby, but they were struggling to take in more animals during the Covid pandemic, so my mother began caring for him herself. My intuition told me to pick up a camera. I knew something special was happening. My mother, a Polish immigrant who had raised me by herself, had been dealing with her newly empty nest after I left for school, and I knew the joy that raising the squirrel would bring her.
After returning to Poland, I saw my mother raise him as she raised me — with meticulous love and care. But he was a wild animal, and eventually my mother had to do what all mothers do: let her child go out into the world. Here, I document their journey together.

AO XD F: Su-Wei Hsieh/Jan Zielinski [3] def. Desirae Krawczyk/Neal Skupski [2] 6-7(5), 6-4, [11-9] Match Stats
📸 Eurosport IL
Krawski initially started solid and deep, but Hsieh/J. Zielinski dug deeper and appeared even more aggressive once they shifted the control of the flow. Despite the tiny difference in shot winners by 3 (31 to 28), the latter had a more positive winner-unforced error rate with 31-23 (7) thanks to their careful point construction, anticipating their returns with balanced power once they got Krawski's balance off under pressure, especially at the net considering Des' initial hesitation, followed by Neal's frequent errors after getting passed. Consequently, Hsieh/J. Zielinski had a 60% break point conversion rate with 5 chances to break compared to Krawski's 4 with a 10% lesser break point conversion percentage.
Service game-wise, Krawski stood out on their first serves with a 73% winning percentage, firing 2 more aces (5 to 3) than Hsieh/J. Zielinski, in hopes to avoid more trouble. In contrast, the third seeds had an exceptional second serve winning rate by 10%, with 56% compared to Krawski's 46%. This happened as a result of the former's cleaner second serves as the match developed, with 2 double faults than Krawski's 3, some of them came in the pressure points. This then signified Hsieh/J. Zielinski's clutch appearance on serve, notably preventing more trouble numerous times in the match to pull an epic comeback from a set and a break down in the middle of the second set.
While successfully denied Des her Career Mixed Doubles Grand Slam, J. Zielinski became the first Polish to win a Mixed Doubles Grand Slam title. Interestingly, this is also Hsieh's maiden Mixed Doubles title, and she (and Elise Mertens) will also contest the Women's Doubles final against the winner of the encounter between fourth seeds Gabriela Dabrowski/Erin Routliffe and eleventh seeds Lyudmila Kichenok/Jelena Ostapenko, whose match is ongoing as this was written. An undoubtedly true queen, whose doubles form became even better since her singles retirement 3 weeks ago.

If protection from the weather and modesty ( a changeable factor to say the least ) are dispensed with as reasons for wearing clothing , we are left with pure decoration as the sole remaining reason . Decoration becomes “ people decoration ” and calls for a whole new orientation . Given sufficient time to develop , an entirely new method of “ dressing ” could develop in which the body would not need to be covered to protect it from the gaze of others — at least not covered with fabric . The young designer who created the illustrations shown here took a new direction , suggesting a method using a scanning device that would project a pattern directly onto the body , then spray a film onto the person that would retain the pattern in colors selected ahead of time . A dissolving spray would remove the “ clothing ” and cycle the material for re - use . New body decorations are thus available at a moment ’ s notice with esthetic ef fects not possible today . The necessity for clothing storage , cleaning , maintenance , and such would be eliminated , and a tremendous “ ward robe ” would be available in one small reel of tape for the scanner . Lista Czyżewskiego - umoczeni..
28.12.2017r/Dodano 06.09.2021r
Obciążają polski rząd, służby bezpieczeństwa i organa sprawiedliwości [lista osób na dole strony] o udział w przekrętach mafii paliwowej i oszukiwaniu społeczeństwa polskiego. Andrzej Czyżewski przebywa obecnie w Niemczech. W czasach PRL pracował w prokuraturze w Malborku. Utrzymuje, że w 1981 r. został doradcą prawnym prezydium Regionu Gdańskiego „Solidarności”. Po wprowadzeniu stanu wojennego został internowany w obozach w Iławie i Kwidzynie. Rok później wyjechał do Niemiec, gdzie został członkiem emigracyjnej Rady Narodowej.

Because...
“The phenomenon of intensifying piracy – unauthorized file-sharing – has been often considered responsible for the drop in sales of music albums, cinema tickets and, recently, also books. The threat from piracy is emphasized by the publishers and other stakeholders, such as agencies of collective management of copyright or cultural goods chambers. In this study we have developed an experimental framework to test if the availability of unauthorized copies has any effect on sales. We have conducted a large field experiment where treatment comprised fairly effective removal of the unauthorized copies of books, for which we observed the traditional sales. While most of the publishers suspected a negative impact of piracy on legal sales, we find no evidence of a significant shift in sales due to pirate copies being available on the internet.” (Bolding mine.)

Digital piracy is not killing authors’ livelihood. However, publishers sure would love it if people would believe that it did.
As for why authors are struggling so much more these days, the paper doesn’t say, but personally I’d hazard a guess that it’s for the same reasons the rest of us are struggling: late stage capitalism.
alright for the millionth time I'm seeing yet another author I admire talk about how they literally can barely afford to live & yet there are people openly admitting to pirating their books so, like
i guess it needs to be said again
pirating books is not the same as pirating your favourite Disney movie or whatever. book piracy kills author's incomes and can genuinely ruin someone's career
#smash capitalism#this made me so mad I actually booted my PC#loaded Google Scholar#and wrote up a whole post#this was like 200% longer initially

The title matches in this year's Australian Open started with the Mixed Doubles final, which featured third seeds Su-Wei Hsieh/Jan Zielinski, who prevented the likely awkward moment in the finals by defeating wild cards Jaimee Fourlis/Andrew Harris 7-6(8), 6-2. Awkward, because otherwise, they would face second seeds Desirae Krawczyk (with whom A. Harris is dating to)/Neal Skupski (hereby referred to as Krawski), who also prevented the likelihood of an all-Australian wild card finals by defeating Olivia Gadecki/Marc Polmans 6-4, 6-1 in the semifinals in hopes for a career Mixed Doubles Grand Slam for Des. Looking at the dynamics alone, the match ended up delivering in one way or another, and turned out to be an epic one for the records.
Hsieh/J. Zielinski might have had a nervy start, where a cross-court forehand error resulted in the deciding point, but still managed to hold their service games to 1-0. Somehow, it took 4 straight holds before Neal's forehand returns to Hsieh's backhand opened the gate and created Krawski's break point before Des' backhand return ace broke Hsieh/J. Zielinski's serves to 4-3. With a 0-hold, Krawski then held their service games to 5-3.
However, the tables started to turn when Neal/Des had to serve for the first set at 5-4. Here, after a cross-court backhand secured a crucial equalizer, Hsieh casually returned a 169 km/h serve from Neal to set themselves one point ahead before she passed Des at the net for the break point due to the latter's volleying hesitation. The pressure then went to Neal, who double-faulted to hand Hsieh/J. Zielinski the break. Interestingly, Krawski's defenses set themselves one point ahead, but Hsieh/J. Zielinski still held to 6-5, and even though the latter minimized the gap thanks to J. Zielinski's tweener to Hsieh's final smash, the first set tie-breaker became inevitable.
In the tie-breaker, Hsieh/J. Zielinski initially had the edge thanks to J. Zielinski's backhands for their mini-break lead (2-0), only for Krawski to catch up 2 points later. Des' forehand winner then set Krawski a mini-break ahead (3-2) only for them to be caught up again. It was not until a backhand winner was fired to the open court from Krawski's half before they consolidated the lead to hold (6-4). Despite the visible tightness through Des' failed +1 volley that saved the set point, a more successful one on return resulted in Krawski taking the first set 7-6(4), putting them in the forefront of the title race.

Świąteczne
Takie wiersze bardziej niż dotąd dodają otuchy i nadziei (wbrew pandemicznemu poczuciu niepewności). Ponad 50. autorów z kraju i zagranicy (Anglia, Niemcy, USA), rozpisuje różne przestrzenie i projekcje Godów.
Młodym i utytułowanym już Piórom (P. Becker, M. Dolata, K. Grzechowiak, I. Krawczyk MChR, P. Kubiak, B. J. Kucharski OCD, M. Mikos, M. M. Pocgaj, A, Rachmajda OCD, R. Ślotała, J. Żmidziński), patronują Mistrzowie, którzy choć odeszli niosą wysoką gwiazdę sięgającą nieba, i szopkę, i wspominki spod choinki (M. C. Abramowicz, E, Najwer, W. Różański, J. J. Swędrowski).

Our hormones tell us to eat less
Or, technically, “Amylin acts in the lateral dorsal tegmental nucleus to regulate energy balance through GABA signaling,” by David J. Reiner, Elizabeth G. Mietlicki-Baase, Diana R. Olivos, Lauren E. McGrath, Derek J. Zimmer, Kieran Koch-Laskowski, Joanna Krawczyk, Christopher A. Turner, Emily E. Noble, Joel D. Hahn, Heath D. Schmidt, Scott E. Kanoski, and Matthew R. Hayes.
What do we know? The hormone amylin is released from the pancreas after a meal and travels to parts of the brain where it binds to amylin receptors to tell you that you are full.
What don’t we know? Amylin receptors are expressed in many parts of the brain, but what are the specific brain regions in which amylin acts to affect how much you eat?
What this study shows: Amylin acts in a brain region called the lateral dorsal tegmental nucleus (LDTg) to tell you are full and decrease how much you eat.
What we can do in the future because of this study: We have identified an underappreciated brain region involved in hormonal control of feeding. This finding helps create a fuller picture of how hormones that are made in organs like the stomach, intestines, and pancreas affect how much you eat.
Why you should care: With over a third of the US population considered obese, it is very important to understand how our body and brain affect how much we eat. If we can understand how hormones act in the brain to make us feel hungry or full, we can potentially create new treatments for obesity.
Brief for non-neuroscientists
The hormone amylin is released from the pancreas following a meal and has been traditionally thought to act exclusively in the hindbrain to decrease food intake. Recent findings have broadened the perspective of amylin's action in the brain to extend beyond the hindbrain to midbrain regions classically associated with reward. Here, the authors show that amylin acts in the lateral dorsal tegmental nucleus (LDTg), which connects the hindbrain and midbrain, to reduce food intake. The authors show that amylin in the LDTg decreases food intake by suppressing meal size without causing nausea. Knocking down amylin receptors in the LDTg increases food intake and body weight. Amylin receptor-expressing neurons in the LDTg make the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA and blocking GABA receptors prevents the ability of amylin to decrease food intake. Together, these data demonstrate that amylin in the LDTg controls food intake.
Brief for neuroscientists
The pancreatic-derived hormone amylin is classically thought to decrease food intake by activating neurons in the area postrema. Recent literature has shown that amylin can also act in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) to modulate the mesolimbic dopamine system and reduce food intake. The lateral dorsal tegmental nucleus (LDTg) sends reciprocal projections to the VTA as well as other nuclei important for feeding and reward and expresses receptors for many energy balance relevant signals. The LDTg may represent an understudied hub that potentially mediates energy balance. Here, the authors show that the LDTg expresses all the components of the amylin receptor and LDTg amylin receptor activation decreases food intake by suppressing meal size without producing nausea. LDTg amylin receptor knockdown increases food intake and body weight. Amylin receptor-expressing neurons in the LDTg are GABAergic and LDTg GABA receptor signaling is required for the hypophagic effects of LDTg amylin receptor. Together, these data suggest that amylin receptor signaling in the LDTg controls energy balance through GABA signaling.
