RG XD F: Laura Siegemund/Edouard Roger-Vasselin [2] def. Desirae Krawczyk/Neal Skupski [4] 6-4, 7-5
Tumblr media
📸 Eurosport GB
Krawski tried to keep it competitive by structuring their points around their passes at times, but it was not necessarily the case as L. Siegemund/E. Roger-Vasselin successfully maintained their balance. This way, the fourth seeds got pressed on trying to finalize their points, while the second seeds often found the space to land their shot winners in, either from the baseline or through the net. As a result, even if Krawski had 11 opportunities to break, L. Siegemund/E. Roger-Vasselin converted 40% of their 10 break points throughout both tight sets.
Furthermore, L. Siegemund/E. Roger-Vasselin appeared more solid on their serves. Even though Krawski served thrice more aces than the second seeds (6 to 2), the latter won 1% more of their first serve points than Krawski as they landed 79% of them in, getting them out of some or most problems. On the other hand, Krawski's second serves appeared more vulnerable at 38%, 12% lesser than L. Siegemund/E. Roger-Vasselin, which resulted in their inability to nail the pressure points on their serves.
This marked L. Siegemund's second career Mixed Doubles title since the US Open 2016 (partnering Mate Pavic), while this was E. Roger-Vasselin's maiden Mixed Doubles title, with his title in 2014 French Open/Roland Garros being the Men's Doubles (with Julien Benneteau). E. Roger-Vasselin cited his last-hour decision (2 hours before the sign-ups deadline) paid off in his speech, and their grass season will start at the Birmingham qualification in the next weekend for L. Siegemund, while E. Roger-Vasselin will reunite with Santiago Gonzalez in Queen's Club (500) in the upcoming fortnight. On the other hand, another time for Krawski, who has a possibility to make it to another final in Wimbledon, draw and game-permitting.

Schroders Battle of The Brits. 2022 An Attendees Perspective .
Something a bit different from me from a content perspective but I wanted to offer something like a dedicated fans perspective following the event before Christmas
As a tennis fan currently based in Scotland. I’ve been in the incredibly lucky position to attend The Team GB Vs US Davis Cup tie in March and three out of the four grand slams over the last 15 years. Seeing Aberdeen chosen as the venue for the first live in-person staging of the Battle of the Brits exhibition event felt like some level of vindication for the city’s cultural and sporting…

Also blows my mind how white commentators struggle with pronouncing Mirza and Bopanna but are perfectly capable of pronouncing their opponents’ names, Neal Skupski and Desirae Krawczyk. It’s almost like the difficulty of the spelling and the pronunciation itself isn’t the real problem…

Krawski tried to raise their game in the second set based on their point construction compared to the first set, but L. Siegemund/E. Roger-Vasselin managed to stay clutch in the crucial moments. Neal's double fault generated the latter pair's break points, which were saved thanks to his successful volley to L. Siegemund's failed response and an unreturned serve for a massive hold to 1-0. Afterward, Des' fiery cross-court forehand won Krawski the point four points into the next game (*1-0 30-30) only for the second seeds to hold their serves to 1-1, and this was only the neat beginning to the match.
The next game then tested both pairs' reflexes at the net as Krawski got outhit at the net, which resulted in L. Siegemund/E. Roger-Vasselin breaking to 2-1 after the Frenchman's smash before consolidating to 3-1 despite surviving 2-point deficit, which included Neal's shot-selection indecisiveness to 30-30 in the said fourth game. L. Siegemund then continued her point construction through a cross-court forehand winner, where they had a break point due to Des' cross-court forehand winner (4-2* 30-40). Krawski still managed to stay in touch by holding their serves 4-3.
In the next game, Neal had a catch from his forehand volley side to set up the one-point lead before Neal's forehand return ace generated Krawski's break point. Eventually, Krawski broke back to 4-4 only to be broken back (5-4) due to their forehand errors, mostly due to Neal's forehand being fired too wide in response to E. Roger-Vasselin's preceding forehand for their first break point, that even if it was saved, the said break happened due to Des' +1 backhand that went too wide. As a result, the second seeds earned their first chance to serve for the match, where they were met by a stiff opposition from the second seeds: a clean forehand winner from Neal to equalize the point (*5-4 30-30), where even though Krawski had the initial break point, the former saved them before Des' forehand winner allowed the latter to break back to 5-5.
Nonetheless, L. Siegemund/E. Roger-Vasselin once again nailed their point construction on return. L. Siegemund's backhand winner became the key to generate their break point (*5-5 15-40) before her final volley became crucial to break back 6-5, earning them the second opportunity to serve for the match. Ultimately, L. Siegemund/E. Roger-Vasselin did it, taking the second set 7-5 to grab the Mixed Doubles title.
