I figured it out. actually only the first two seasons of Greys are good.
#after season two the show starts BELIEVING the mcdreamy propaganda#and forgets that derek is actually and has always been. at best! a morally ambiguous little creep#and once they forget that? it's sort of the kiss of death#the nuance is just gone#and they throw characters together and break them up wayyyy too fast#in a way that it's clear it's for the drama! it's supposed to be salacious!#it's not HONEST anymore#the derek meredith relationship in season 1 & 2? was HONEST#they were like 'here's this beautiful sexy man! he's so mysterious!! he's her boss but there's no way he's using her!#pSYCH!! the reason he's mysterious is that he's mARRIED#and the way that hurts meredith is real!!#her reaction is real!!!#derek making the effort to fix things with his wife is real and makes him a more interesting character!!#izzie's relationship with alex is honest!!!!#(denny is a little dramatic but i'll give it to him!)#george's crush on meredith? totally real!#all the shit in season three with izzie and george and callie? not real!!!!! it's not!!!!!!!!!#burke and christina getting engaged after not speaking to each other for days/weeks and then him leaving her at the altar? not real!!!!!#derek telling meredith he wants to marry her but be warned: he might fall in love with someone else in the meantime while she heals?#it's real but it's SHITTY and the show doesn't seem to know that!!!#there are good episodes. but the SHOW isn't Great anymore. it's not terrible yet! but it's no longer Shockingly Good#cate liveblogs!

Hello!
I was re-watching greys firsts seasons and saw that scene with izzie and george when she hugs him and says "i want you to be happy, if callie makes you happy then go be with callie".
So maybe you could could make a jackson avery finding out that his ex is getting married to alex karev and he feels like his world is falling apart?
Maybe they broke up because he was falling for kepner and she started hanging around with alex and he was like "i would never let you go if you were with me"
Alex and y/n are engame :)
❛ 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝒐𝒏𝒆 ❜
𝙋𝙖𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜: Alex Karev x reader ♡
𝘼/𝙣: Yes omg sorry I haven't died, I'm lowkey back now 😭 Hope you like it btw !
Tumblr media
Since the day you and Alex decided to get married every day seemed to be so good for you. Believing it was still difficult, but indeed it was all real and you were so happy.
Alex Karev getting married? Hell, you must have really changed him. When you and him started to hang around and getting close he made you feel like the luckiest girl ever, which was difficult to believe. It was a moment where you were still feeling so bad from your last relationship.
Jackson had been one of the most important people in your life, of course you couldn't forget it. But he chose someone else. And that hurt you a lot.
You found so much comfort in Alex that actually you didn't even think was possible, but he suddenly became so important to you. At first it wasn't really easy, you knew he wasn't really a people's person, but you found a way with him and he was always the best with you.
The moment where everything started was maybe one of the cutest that you could've never forget. It was a late evening and you both have had a long ass shift; between random but nice talks he couldn't stop listening at you yapping even if he was so tired, he just loved that, he loved every simple little detail of you.
“Damn, I would never let you go if you were with me” those words had came out of his mouth in such a spontaneous way that you finally understood he was the one, well just the one you really needed. And look at you now.
However, the news had already spread in the whole hospital and everyone looked so excited for you two. Everyone but Jackson. You couldn't understand why as you both moved on, yet his reaction was so... cold. You decided not to touch the topic, after all it would have been useless. This was a new chapter of your life that you clearly wanted to enjoy.
When Jackson had heard about you and Alex he couldn't exactly describe what kind of feelings started to manifest inside him. All that you had was perfect and he screwed up everything, he knew that. And right now it seemed like if the idea of you with someone else was unacceptable.
Today you had to scrub in together in a surgery, it didn't bother you that much. Luckily for the whole time in that room everything stayed professional. Just silence and medical talks. Until the end of the operation.
“So” he started as you two were still scrubbing out “You and Karev...”
“What?” he did it. He had started with that and you couldn't believe that.
“Nothing, just... I'm actually happy for you guys. But don't you think you're rushing a bit too much?” he went straight to the point.
“No. He really loves me Jackson, and so do I” you simply replied. You could still feel his gaze on you. “And you are the last person I'd rather to talk about this honestly” you then said.
“I didn't mean anything else with that Y/n, I just want you to be happy. And if Alex makes you happy then go and be with Alex” his tone sounded really honest as he pronounced those words.
“Well, thanks, but I didn't need your permission. Like you didn't need mine to run to Kepner. But what matters now is that we are both happy I guess” you took off your scrub cap. “See you around” was the last thing you told him before leaving the room. As you walked out you let out a deep sighed, thinking about the last five minutes. You and Jackson never had a real conversation after the break up, so this felt almost right. Maybe you needed it.
Jackson watched you leave, knowing well he couldn't do or say anything else. He couldn't accept the fact he was losing you, but he had already lost you.
After your shift was done you came back home to Alex, who was already there. He smiled at you when he saw you walking in and got up from the couch. He greeted you with a soft kiss that you reciprocated. Then he looked at you, noticing a hint of overthinking in your face.
“Is everything ok?” he asked.
You looked at him, your lips curved into a smile as in that moment you were able to forget the whole day. “Yes... Just tired” you gave him another little kiss.
For the rest of the evening you've been laying in bed together and dicussing about some details for the wedding, you two had so many different ideas, but it was funny. That was definitely the best part of the day.

saw someone do this with Glee, so i decided to try my swing at yellowjackets as Grey’s Anatomy characters🙂‍↕️
(only from seasons like 1-10is. bc that show (as a fan) has no business being that long) also most of these are crack😭🙂‍↕️
Shauna: Meredith Grey, slutty mistress, need i say more?
Lottie: Jo Wilson, they’re both goofy and dorky, and if i remember correctly when jo and alex were drinking she talked about stealing something. (i’ll rewatch and confirm this🤝🏼)
Misty: Cristina Yang, one of the twisted sisters. Cristina is very cutthroat and i feel like the misty killing jessica robert’s is pretty cutthroat. also yang is just super fucking smart, and so is misty. (i would like to note cristina yang would hate misty)
Javi: Andrew Deluca, just bc he’s sweet and he dies in the end. like i’m sorry bro but yeah😭
Tai: Owen Hunt, my fav sleepwalking adulterers <3 no but the way they both deal with trauma is so funny. like no let’s not deal with it. lets repress it and act like im not the problem (tai is not the problem tho, women are never the problem)(i actually hate owen hunt. fuck that bitch ass ginger (this is just a slide at owen. other than that ginger women {bc i don’t fuck with the male specimen} are so hot. thank you for existing))
Laura Lee: April Kepner, do we even have to ask that? i love me some bible thumpers. also i like how their environment challenges/strengthens their faith. holy women for the win ❤️🙏🏼
Mari: Lexie Grey, honestly i’m still not sure about this one, but idk i think they’re both so cute and goofy and bc mari is pit girl and lexie died in the woods😔
Gen: Callie Torres, gives off mean vibes but it’s lowkey a cutie. but also a total bad fucking ass
Ben: Arizona Robbins, twinnsss😝🤞🏼(arizona got one up on him with the prosthetic and being able to be openly gay tho😔)
Akilah: Izzie Stevens, something about hallucinating shit that isn’t there is crazy. but idk what’s crazier. hallucinating having a pet rat but it’s actually been dead the whole time or hallucinating fucking your dead ex-lover/patient/someone you stole a heart for?? idk chat, shits wild asf😭
Van: George O’Malley, only the good parts bc those parts george was sweet and cute and all fun go lucky.
Travis: Preston Burke, arrogant, narcissistic, sexist, fucking douchebags, god complex’s 😒(but also burke, like travis, had his good moments. i will say i do favor travis’ character more tho. bc he’s a kid and that’s understandable. but at his big fucking age burke knows better (okay i’m sorry let me stop before i get heated😭) anyways yeah)
Nat: Alex Karev/Amelia Shepherd, let’s be honest here, alex is so nat, when it comes to the brooding, dickhead, boyfriend, who came from a tough childhood and swears he’s tough as shit just bc he boxes. but is a fucking puppy dog and follows you around and laughs super hard at shit you say even tho you just said that persons shirt looked weird. she’s also very Amelia coded. and yes bc of the drugs and the daddy issues with seeing him get shot. maybe not the same circumstances or relationship but it played a big role in her life.
Jackie: Derek Shepherd, let’s be so fucking fr rn. of course jackie would be charming, annoying, stuck up, pretentious, McDreamy, loyal to a fault, himbo man. “it’s a beautiful day to save lives” headass😭im sorry but i totally see it. also they both die in crazy ways after both surviving a plane crash. if anyone needs to be studied, it’s them.

AN: I’ve been working on this forever! It’s finally done and I’m really happy to share it with you all!
……………………………………………………………………
“Let’s make a baby.”
The moment she spoke, Alex's heart jumped in his chest. He's wanted to have a kid with Jo since the night he pulled down his pants and asked her to make a baby with him. He has spent the past year imagining what it would be like to have a baby with her, but Jo wasn't ready. She said she wanted to wait and finish her residency, yet here she was.
Jo was standing there before him, telling him she was ready. That she wants a baby now too. She was dressing in that low-cut tank top with ample cleavage and loose pants. She was offering herself up to him, offering her womb, and he would be lying if he said he didn't want to take her up on her offer.
“Are you going to tell me why you won't marry me?”
“I told you that I love you and that I'm not going anywhere. So isn't that enough? Can't that be enough for you?”
She's begging him to stay. He can see it in her eyes. Alex hates to be just another man that walks away from her and the truth is that he doesn't want to be.
He looks down at the white lace that outlined her breasts again. They both fall silent as he stares at her body. A baby is everything he's ever wanted with her, and maybe, for right now, that can be enough.
“When I proposed to you, I did it because I want to be committed to you. You said you needed someone in your corner and I want to be that person and I want the same from you.”
“I am committed to you, Alex. I love you. I want to be tied to you too.”
“So marry me. A baby isn't going to fix this.”
“I'm not trying to fix it with a baby, I'm trying to show you that I'm committed to you by telling you that I want what you want. I love you and I want to be with you for the rest of our lives.”
“But you won't marry me.”
“Alex, I can't,” Jo begs him in a whisper.
Alex stares into her eyes. He can see the way that she pleads with him and the hint of fear in her eyes. He doesn't know what was holding her back. He knows that she's always been afraid of legal commitment. She loves him, he knows that. She wants to be with him, he knows that too. Yet, she never wants anything to prove it. It took a week to convince her to sign the declaration of their relationship for the hospital. He knows there's more to this, that it wasn't just the fact that Jo's afraid of marriage.
To be honest, he was a little afraid to marry her too. He saw the way that his parents treated each other. He saw the way his foster parents treated each other. He knows how marriage can change a couple, but he also knows how it can make them stronger. He remembers how it changed him when he was with Izzie. He pledged himself to her and she was his responsibility to take care of. He wants to be that for Jo. To be someone who looks after her and takes care of her and for her to do the same for him in return. Being her husband is important to him. Still, he loves her enough to keep the ring in his drawer. To keep waiting for her.
“I love you, Jo, and I want to be your husband someday. I want to commit myself to you and only you for the rest of our lives and do everything that comes with it.”
“I know,” Jo said, letting out a breath as she looks down before she looks back up at him through her eyelashes. “And what about having a baby?”
Alex just smiles, he can't help it. A large happy smirk spreads across his face as he walks up to her. He reaches out to put his hands on her waist, trailing up to brush the lace at the side of her breast before pulling the tank top down to reveal her breasts. His fingers ghost over her breasts and leave goosebumps across her skin.
“Are you sure you're ready?” Alex says as he pulls his eyes away from her skin to look up at her.
She's been so hesitant before, he wants to have her permission for this. He wants to know that she wants this. Because she wants a baby, a family with him, and not just for him to stay.
“Yes,” Jo says and he knows she's sure.
His lips crash into hers and her arms wrap around his neck. It's desperate and needy and fast and a little rough, so he slows it down. He pulls her over to the bed and tries to be delicate with her. He loves her and he doesn't want the night they make their baby to be anything but filled with love.
Loving Jo is so easy. She's his best friend and she knows him like the back of her hand. She's been through what he's been through and she knows what he wants because of it. She knows how his childhood shaped him because she's cut from the same cloth.
He slips the black pants off her body to reveal the white lace underneath. He smiles as he leans down to gently kiss her body from the peaks of her breasts down to the valley of her thighs. He makes love to her, he makes it sweet and soft as he pulls her body into his. He kisses her with all the love he has for her as he pours himself into her in the hopes that it will create a new life between them.
Afterwards Jo falls asleep in his arms. She clings to him in a way she only does on dark nights and he knows it’s because he didn't sleep next to her the night before. She tosses and turns on those nights more than any others. So he lets her sleep, but as he does, the reality of the situation sinks in.
He knows a baby isn't going to change anything. It isn't going to fix their relationship. He knows she has a secret. He doesn't know what it is or how big it is. Still, he can sense that it's the reason she's holding back. It has something to do with the reason why she won't marry him. That worries him. It worries him that her secret is something so big and so dark that it will tear them apart. So he gets that itch. The urge to run before things get too hard, before things get too crazy.
He loves Jo and he wants to stay with her. He does. He wants a baby, a family, to continue building a life with her. Yet, the heaviness of it all weighs upon him. He decides to go to the one person he's always been able to talk to. He slips out of her arms and calls Meredith. She is, of course, busy with Amelia and the wedding, but she still has time for him, so he grabs his keys and leaves.
After talking with Meredith and hearing Owen react to his own runaway bride. Alex realizes he loves Jo enough to bear this secret and wait for her to be ready.
When he comes back, he hears Jo’s laughter and he smiles. He can't wait to hear that laughter from their child's lips and he can see it in his mind. Then he comes around the corner and finds her on the bed with DeLuca above her. He sees her drunk and only in the lingerie she wore for him. He also sees how DeLuca holds her wrist and how he lays on top of her.
He doesn't think, he just acts as his fist connects with DeLuca’s face.
……………………………………………………………………
It's always in the aftermath that he seems to realize what he's done. As he looks at the blood on his hands. Jo’s screaming and crying rings in his ear. DeLuca’s bloody and broken face lingers behind his eyes. He realizes he's made the worst mistake of his life and there's no going back.
……………………………………………………………………
A few weeks later, after the dust settles, he's working in the clinic, and Arizona approaches him.
“Jo came to see me today,” Arizona says as she looks at him. She doesn't have that angry look on her face that she's had all week. Instead, she looks at him with an expression he can't read. “Alex, she's pregnant.”
He drops the supplies that are in his hand and they crash to the floor. He's not sure why he's so surprised. He didn't forget how they tried for a baby. How could he? It’s etched into his mind as the last good thing he did. If he could go back, he would go back to that moment. He never would have left their bed, he never would have left her, and they would have this conversation together.
Yet, instead of Jo, Arizona is telling him this. He should be sharing this moment with her. It should have been a happy one. Instead, the mother of his child looks at him with fear in her eyes as she remembers the night that he broke everything with his fists. He knows that she'll never look at him the same way. He knows that she worries that what he did to DeLuca, he could do to her and their baby. Despite how Alex knows he could never lay a finger on them. Jo doesn't know that. She doesn't trust that. Why should she?
His entire world has gone to shit and this time, he doesn't know how to fix it.
……………………………………………………………………
A few days later, Alex gets a chance to talk to Jo for the first time since he found out she was pregnant. In the storage room of the ER, she's tucked away. He finds her hiding out between the storage shelves. She sits on the floor with her little note cards, studying for her boards. He used to quiz her and he knows Callie gave her, her note cards to study. If his math is right, her due date is in June, just after the boards. He hopes this doesn't throw off her chances of taking them.
He watches her for a moment. She holds her stomach with one hand and munches on a few crackers as she reads the note cards in front of her. He also notes the changes in her body. Her cheeks are fuller, as are her breasts. Her hair shines and her skin glows. Yet, her eyes look weary. She takes a moment to lean her head back against the wall, closing her eyes.
As he leans forward to get a better look at her, he brushes against the box of gauze pads and topples a few of them over. Jo looks up to see him and quickly gets up. She avoids eye contact with him as she goes to walk past him, but he reaches out for her arm.
“Jo.”
She pauses and slowly turns around as her eyes glance up to catch him. His lips part, he doesn't know what to say next. He knows what he wants to say, what he wants to do. He wants to take it all back, to pull her into his arms and kiss her. He wants to celebrate their baby, but he knows she won't let him do that now.
His eyes go down to her waist. He doesn't see a bump under her blue scrub shirt. She's not that far along, but she has her hand protectively over their baby.
“Arizona told me, about, about the baby and, and everything,” Alex says, tripping over his words like he tripped over his feet. “Are you doing okay?”
“No, Alex, I'm,” Jo just shakes her head as she looks up to the ceiling, her eyes sparkling with tears before she lets out a sigh. “Look, I'm fine, okay. The baby is healthy. You don't have to worry about us.”
She rushes to go past him and he reaches out to grab her arm. It's something they've done before and usually, Jo will let him pull her in. He'll kiss her cheek and a smile will spread across her lips, but not now, not today. Instead, Jo reacts with shock. She pulls back in surprise and takes a step away from him.
“I'm sorry,” Alex says, immediately letting her go as he doesn't want to push her boundaries. “Just, if you need anything, crackers, or that boxed mac and cheese you like, or if you need anything in the middle of the night….”
“What, you're going to drive all the way down from Meredith's to hold my hair back while I puke at 4 am?” Jo said with a roll of her eyes, hiding the longing in them.
“Yeah, why wouldn't I?” Alex says because he would. “I know you have an ultrasound next week and I'd like to be there.”
“No, I don't want you there!” Jo says defensively, and her words hurt worse than anything else he's done in the past week. “You left Alex. Then you hurt DeLuca, and you called me trash. I don't want you there. I don't need you right now. That's why I asked Arizona to tell you instead of telling you myself. I know this baby is half yours and I won't keep you from them. But for now, this pregnancy is mine alone and I can handle my pregnancy on my own.”
“But you don't have to, Jo. I can be there for you and I want to be.”
“I don't want you there, Alex. I don't want you.”
With that, she left him alone and Alex knew now there was no coming back from this.
……………………………………………………………………
Alex is closing down the clinic again. He hates the 12-hour days when he opens and closes as they are filled with mindless work. He had already made sure that all the laundry was sent out and the new beds were ready. He had put away all the old files and put out new ones for tomorrow’s charts. He also did other little things that he shouldn't be doing as a surgeon, like tidying up after everyone else. Yet, he messed up, so here he is. As he's making sure that the supplies are stocked up, Alex hears the bells on the door jingle as it opens.
Although he doesn't look up from where he is putting away the packets of gauze and curses himself for forgetting to lock up. “We're closed.”
“I know,” Jo says in a little voice that startles him.
Alex quickly put all the gauze down on the floor and stood up. He turns around to see her standing in front of him. Her hands are in her pocket and she looks hesitant to be there.
“Oh hi,” Alex says, not really sure what to say. He figures that since Jo is the one who sought him out, she should do the talking.
Arizona had told him to wait and let Jo come to him. Although Meredith said that he should talk to her. Alex was inclined to listen to Arizona more. Although Meredith only wants the best for him. He knows that if he pushes Jo, she would retreat further. Meredith mostly worries Jo will keep the baby from him. Alex worries about that too, but Jo said she wouldn't and he trusts her. So he waits for her to come to him and now she has.
Jo looks at him, studying him as if she is looking for something in him. Then she looks down at her bump, rubbing her hand up and down. Alex studies her bump as well. He can't see it as well with her dark t-shirt and green jacket. She hasn't let him see it fully see it as he hasn’t been to one of her appointments.
“I just wanted you to know that the baby and I are okay, Alex,” Jo says looking down at her bump. “They're growing well and they're in the 80th percentile or something. And we're healthy, both of us are healthy.”
“I know, Arizona gives me an update on them after every appointment,” Alex says with a nod.
“Right, Jo says with a nod as well, looking down at her bump. “I forgot that I asked her to do that. I just thought that after today, you'd want to know.”
“Yeah, thank you. I appreciate it,” Alex nods again, especially after everything from that day.
They talked a little bit more throughout this case, but this is the first time they're talking about their baby. After hearing Amelia's revelation about her baby and Veronica’s cancer and pregnancy, Alex couldn't help but worry about Jo and their baby. Although he knows they are both fine, hearing it from Jo herself was comforting.
He looks down to where she's cradling her bump and she follows his eyes. She doesn't say anything, just steps up to him and holds out her hand. Alex reaches out and grabs her hand. She takes his hand and guides it to her bump, as she leads his hands over the curve of her belly.
“It's not much more than a little curve of my stomach. I just noticed it a few days ago. I'm not sure if you can feel it?”
“Yeah, I can,” Alex says with a little smile. “It's nice.”
His eyes glance up at Jo and for a moment, they just stare at each other. There's that familiar tension in the air. He used to feel that tension between them before the first time he kissed her. Tonight reminds him of that night. He wants so badly to lean in and kiss her lips, but they aren't there yet.
“Do you have a recent ultrasound photo?” Alex asks as he looks down at her bump and holds their baby.
“No, but, why don't we go get one for ourselves?” Jo says as she reaches out to grasp the hand on her bump. Giving it a squeeze, she holds his hand and leads him away.
Alex immediately smiles, Jo hadn't let him into any of her ultrasounds just yet. He locks up the clinic, although he isn't done closing. This is more important. Jo grasps his hand like a lifeline as she leads the way. He easily follows her through the hospital as they make their way to Arizona on the maternity ward.
They paused in the doorway to Arizona's office as Jo timidly glanced back at him with a smile. “I want to show Alex our baby.”
This is the first time she's smiled at him since all of this began.
Arizona excitedly obliged them. Soon enough he's holding Jo's hand and her shoulder as he helps her lay back on the bed. Jo pulls up her shirt and undoes the buttons on her jeans. He realizes she's already in maternity jeans. Arizona gives her a cloth to tuck into her jeans and as she does, he realizes that he's staring at the fullness of her bump. Alex reaches out and puts a hand on her belly. He notes that her little belly button has turned out and his fingers ghost over it. He can't help the smile that seems stuck on his face. He’s been smiling so much that his cheeks hurt.
However, he soon has to move his hand so they can start up the ultrasound. Arizona starts it in the middle moving around until eventually, she pulls up a side profile of their baby. The sight of his child looking so real on the screen takes his breath away. There's their little nose and head, their little heart fluttering in their chest, their little arms waving around. He barely hears Arizona's words as Alex just stares at the little slope of their little nose.
He didn't look at the ultrasound like he normally would as a doctor. Sometimes he took care of the babies before they were born on a consult for Arizona. Instead, he looks at them like a father. Alex looks at their heart beating, not counting the beats or looking for defects. He looks at their arms and legs moving and kicking, not measuring their size. He looks at his child. This is his child, his baby, and watching them on the ultrasound was so much more magical than he thought it would be. He couldn't help but tear up. Although he fights to hold them back with everything inside of him, the tears refuse to stop from falling.
“Oh Alex, don't cry,” Jo says looking up at him with a painful expression. She's holding back tears of her own as his streams down his cheeks and he reaches up to brush them away.
“I'm okay, it's just…” Alex trails off, unable to find the words to describe what he’s feeling.
“It's okay if this is overwhelming,” Arizona reassures him with a comforting smile.
“Yeah, but if you cry, I'm going to cry,” Jo says, already brushing away the tears that had spilled over onto her cheeks.
“I'm sorry,” Alex says as he smiles a little.
“No, don't be, you don't have to apologize for this,” Jo says with a smile of her own as she squeezes his hand and he squeezes it back.
“You're going to be a good father,” Jo whispers, looking up at him as he whips his head up.
As he looks at her, she just smiles. She meant what she said. Alex wasn't yet sure of that. He didn’t know if he would be a good father. He had the worst role model with his own father and he thought about how angry he got. He still reacted fists first. But he was trying not to. If this whole thing taught him anything, it was that he can't do that anymore. Jo and their baby don't deserve his anger.
Still, he knew he could let go of his anger and frustration for them. Alex thought about the preemie that pulled out their ET tube for the 20th time that day. How he just shook his head and put another one in. He did give them a little bit of a talking to. He told them how they needed it and it would come out soon enough.
Alex thought about the toddler that bit him last week. He reacted in surprise as he jumped back. The kid just looked up at him with a glare. They didn't like the shots he had to give them. He just cleaned his arm and assured the parents that it was developmentally appropriate. Then he smiled at the kid and gave them a pacifier before he continued with the exam.
Alex thought about how he talked to the teenagers like they were adults. They liked to understand what was happening to them. He told them how it was, but he still gave them stickers. Because they were still kids and they still deserve stickers.
Alex so desperately wants to be a good father. As he stares at their baby on the screen, he knows they hold his entire heart. He would do anything, become anything for them. He looks over at Jo too, her eyes fixed on the screen and her hand tightly grasping his. He would do anything for her too. Even if she wouldn't marry him and wouldn't tell him why.
……………………………………………………………………
“I'm married to a man who almost beat me to death.”
That is the second phrase Jo says that changes his life. Although he can't see her face, he knows she's fighting back tears. He can hear it in her voice. They stand together in the elevator as Jo cradles her now prominent baby bump. She's still trying to hide it from everyone, except him.
“And I can't divorce him, because I ran away from him. And I'm not,” Jo pauses, looking down at her bump. She holds their baby before she shakes her head and continues. “Jo Wilson isn't my real name, it's Brooke Stadler. That's why I couldn't marry you.”
Alex takes a second to take in this revelation. His whole mind swirls around the fact that Jo is married. But she's married to someone who abused her, and she ran away from him. Her real name, Brooke Stadler echoes in his mind. He can't even fathom the thought that she was anyone other than the woman he's known for four years now.
“You're married,” Alex finally manages to say.
Jo slowly turned around, facing him. “Yes.”
“And you didn't tell me?”
“I was scared. I…”
“Scared of what? Did you think I'd get mad? You thought I'd get mad at you for trying to get yourself out…”
“No, not at me, at him. I thought you'd want to kill him and that you'd try something stupid and you'd get hurt or killed or you'd get in trouble and you... you would…”
Jo trails off and he finishes the sentence for her. “Wind up in jail.”
“It might all come out in court tomorrow. I wanted you to hear it from me.”
Alex nods a silent thanks. Then he lets out a deep sigh, letting the weight of what she said settle on his shoulders. They don’t say anything else to each other. Jo turns around to start the elevator again. When the elevator doors open, she gets off. But before the doors close, her hand appears and forces them back open.
“If I just take off after the trial, if I leave, it's not because of you. It's because my testimony will be a matter of record or whatever. But I don't want you to think that it's you... ever. And I promise it's not because I want to keep you from the baby. We’ll figure out a way for you to see her. I'll call and text you just please keep your number the same.”
As Jo speaks she looks down at her belly and cradles it again. Alex reaches out to put his hand on her belly to cradle their baby girl as well. Jo had let him attend her appointments now and he loved to see their baby grow. She was so big now. At first, neither of them wanted to know the gender, but then at the last minute, they decided to find out. When they found out it was a girl, Jo instantly smiled. While Alex wonders if it's karma coming back around to give him a daughter.
Jo is so happy to have a daughter and she talks about buying princess dresses, a doll house, a tea set, and getting their baby everything that she didn’t have, but wanted as a little girl. Jo is excited, but Alex is terrified. He knows what it means to be a girl, what she would face in the world from the type of guy he used to be. But then he thinks of having a little girl with pig tales and little pink blankets. He thinks of carrying her on his shoulders and her being a daddy’s girl. He falls even more in love with his daughter and she becomes his whole world. He loves her as much as he loves Jo. It makes him want his family back, his girls. He didn't want to lose them forever.
“I'll find a way that you can see her and she can stay with you sometimes. It'd probably be safer anyway,” Jo said, refusing to meet his eyes as they glistened with tears. “I'll let you know when I go into labor so you can be there, but you’ll have to be careful.”
“Jo please don't go,” Alex begs her, staring into her eyes.
“If he finds me….” Jo whispers, unable to finish her sentence.
“He won't, Jo. I can protect you,” Alex pleads with her.
“You can't,” Jo said, heartbreak in her eyes as she shook her head. “I'm sorry I didn't tell you earlier. It’s what got us all into this mess.”
Jo's look was so painful, but Alex didn’t blame her for any of this. Sure she kept this secret from him, but it was his actions that created this. He was the reason she slept alone at the loft while he slept at Meredith's.
“I can't risk him hurting her,” Jo says, as the tears escape the corners of her eyes. “I can't.”
“You won't have to, I'll help you, Jo, I'll protect you both,” Alex pleads with her again, but Jo just shakes her head and steps back. She lets the doors close but he steps forward and opens them. “This is your life. You're Jo Wilson. You belong here.”
Brook Stadler, the name is so foreign to him. As he looks at the woman standing before him, that's not her name. It can't be her name, he knows it. Memories and images of her filter through his mind. He can't attach that name to her. She is Jo Wilson. Who else would she be?
But Jo just shakes her head and leaves.
Despite how he hopes his words and support can convince her to stay, it’s not enough. Alex knows that he can do something else to protect her. This is his last chance to do something to save his family, to save Jo and their daughter. For the sake of Jo and their baby. His life has always been Jo’s but now he’ll do whatever he has to for their daughter too.
That night he walks into the judge’s office. He has to own up to this mess. He has to face up to the worst mistake he's ever made. He has to make things right and he'll do it now without trying to avoid his guilt.
To his surprise, however, DeLuca lies to protect Jo from the same thing that he is. Alex isn’t sure how he knows, but he does. DeLuca renounces his statement and vows to do so in court as all of the charges are dropped.
Afterwards, Alex talks to Andrew and he realizes he should have just talked to him first. If he wants to be a better man for Jo and their daughter, he can't be quick to anger. Especially for his daughter, he doesn't want her to grow up around that, he doesn't want to be that kind of man anymore, so he starts the work to be a better man.
……………………………………………………………………
Alex walks into the resident’s lounge and looks around to be sure that it was just Jo. She was half dressed in a pair of jeans and a tank top. He let his eyes linger on her, from behind he can’t see her round belly. At six months pregnant she was carrying high and big. She was no longer able to hide it and hadn't for a while now. He loves to see her belly grow each day.
He knows that what he’s about to say might ruin all of that, but she deserves to know. He's also desperate to tell her that she doesn't have to be afraid of him, she shouldn't be.
Alex closes the door, to give them a bit of privacy. “You have a minute?”
Jo whips around in surprise, but relaxes when she sees him. “Did you come to laugh at me again? And just because I'm pregnant with your baby, doesn't mean I can't sleep with someone else!”
“I know,” Alex nods, cutting her off. “You don't have to make excuses to me.”
Jo nods, as she relaxes her stance and sits back down on the bench, waiting for him to continue.
“You know, I-I found your husband. I hired a guy. I found his name. I looked him up and, and then I went and found him.”
“Oh, my God, Alex,” Jo said, her hands instantly cradling their baby as she takes in his revelation before he continues.
“Look. You didn't ask me to do that, and you, you didn't give me permission to do that, and it was wrong, and I-I'm sorry,” Alex said, fumbling over his words a little too much as his nerves got the better of him.
He had to make things right between them if they were going to raise their baby together. He wants her to trust him again and revealing the truth to her was his first step.
“And, Jo, I-I swear to God, I could never, ever hurt you or our daughter. My dad, he, he was like your ex. I'm not like that. I'm not like my dad. I mean, I do things that are wrong. I do things that are stupid. But I swear to you I would never hurt you or our baby girl.”
Alex hopes that his words and his actions in the past few months have proven that to her. Jo still cradles her belly, holding their baby safely inside her. Then her hand starts to move up and down in a soothing gesture and he knew she was calming herself as well as their daughter inside her.
As he stares down at her, he wants to reach his hand out and put a hand on her belly to see if he could feel the baby's kick. He hadn't been able to feel it yet. although Jo had felt it for a few weeks now and even said she kept her up at night.
“You saw Paul?” Jo asks, standing but not looking at him as she instead stares off to the side.
“Yes.”
“And you didn't kill him?”
“No, I mean, I thought about it,” Alex said, thinking of all the ways he had imagined killing Paul so that Jo and their daughter would be safe. “but I-I came home instead.”
Because that’s what Jo and their daughter need. They need him to be there for them, to protect them, and care for them. He couldn't do that if he was locked up. And if Paul ever came for Jo, he wants to be right there next to her.
“Okay,” Jo said, taking his word with a simple nod as she got up.
He looks down and resigns to the fact that she’s leaving. He told Jo the truth and she would do with it what she wished, but then to his surprise, she came back to him. She locks the door to the lounge and comes back to stand in front of him. She puts her hands on his neck before she leans in and kisses him.
It was like their first kiss all over again, full of passion and love. Alex relishes the warmth and the love that came with her lips on his. He melts into her, giving himself to her again and forever.
Then Jo pulls back and stares at him just for a second. Before she dives back in lips first. It’s then that he knows she has truly forgiven him, that she truly trusts him, and that she loves him. He always knew that she loved him, but he resigned himself to the fact that she was moving on. She had slept with someone else. Yet, now he knows she is as deeply in love with him as he is with her.
Although he still wants to marry her, he wants to be her husband and to call her his wife, for now, this was enough. This is the life he always wants with her and he was willing to give up a pair of rings and some legal papers if it meant he would always have this.
His hands trail over her waist to her belly as he holds the product of their love in his hand. Then, he feels something, a light flutter, and then something presses against his hand.
Alex brakes away from Jo's lips just for a second as he looks down at her belly in his hands. “I think I felt her kick.”
“I'm not surprised,” Jo said with a wide smile as she put her hands over his. “She's been kicking up a storm since I kissed you.”
Alex's eyes soften as he pulls down the straps of Jo's tank top until the fabric is around her waist. Once her belly is exposed to him, he leans down and places a light feather kiss on her bump, their baby girl. Jo hums and they both feel their daughter kick his hand again.
Then Jo runs her fingers through his hair before cupping the back of his neck and pulling him up to her lip. She claims him again and pulls him into her. As they resume their passion, Alex's hands move to her waist holding her hips against him.
Her lips tell him exactly what she wants as he reads her body like he used to. It feels like the first time in a long time, but he doesn't need to relearn her body, despite the changes. She pushes him down onto the couch, climbing on top of him. His hand moves up her back, going back up to her bra as Jo's hands continue to cradle his face and deeply kiss him. It didn't take long for them to tear off each other's clothes as their bodies met again.
……………………………………………………………………
In the Afterglow, they lay together on the couch. Jo curls into his side with her head on his shoulder. While Alex traces his fingers across her belly, feeling their baby move under his hand as he smiles.
“Is Daddy tickling you?” Jo says with a giggle as she puts a hand on her belly and their baby girl kicks and wiggles around inside of her.
“No, we're playing. You're the one who's ticklish,” Alex says as his fingers trace across her skin, causing her to giggle again.
Finally, he moves his hand over her belly, caressing it up and down before he settles on the spot where their daughter was kicking. Jo lets out a sigh of contentment as she snuggles closer to him, closing her eyes for a second. Alex squeezes the arm that was around her shoulders, giving her a quick hug. She happily smiles but keeps her eyes closed. Alex could never get tired of how wonderful it felt to hold her as she rests peacefully in his arms.
He realizes then that he knows her now more deeply than he ever had before and she knows him better too. He knows all her secrets and he still loves her. She too had seen the worst of him and she still loves him. Despite everything that has happened between them, they’re here again. The two of them, in each other arms and their baby in between them.

Alex was someone who didn't get close to someone. Once Izzie left him, he didn't want to get close to anyone. That is why he made his rounds with the intern class, and that meant sleeping with everyone. But one in particular turned him down and that was Jo. She really didn't take the bait, but what he didn't know is how important Jo would become to him. There were stories about him, and he knew that, but once people got to know him, they would know that he wasn't just like that. That is one thing that Jo found out. They became friends before anything else. Friendship is what built their foundation to the relationship they have built.
But Alex, he had a dilemma and it was all about not hurting her in a way that he had. But when izzie called, and said she had his kids, Alex panicked and he had to see for himself if he was being honest. But the broken promises he had left Jo with, he knew there was no going back. He knew he broke everything with them. He loves her, and he was in love with her, but leaving the way he did, how was that fair to her? It wasn't and since then, his words on paper meant nothing. He knew that Jo would have a hard time and he couldn't blame her. Izzie really threw a wrench in his plans and his life with Jo. Now, he was on the outside looking in, miserable in Kansas and hoping soon, he would get to see Jo again. But she kept responding back and that had to mean something. That had to mean she wanted to hear from him and her say her words and he can't be mad for the way she is reacting. At all, he would do the same if it was the opposite and she left him. But broken promises, that is all he kept thinking about and not wanting to push anything.
After his last text, he wasn't sure that he was going to get anything else from her. The time past and maybe Alex was driving himself insane about it, because what he wants is to hear from her and see just what he is going to do. He needed to do the right thing, and Jo, she was always on his mind. No matter where he was at, but he knew that he ruined that. SO it was all about being patient and trying to get her to really just let him be there the best he could. Hearing his phone go off, he looked down and opened up his phone and read the text from Jo as he started to reply back.
[Text: Jo] "Who says you are a charity case, or even a responsibility? you were never that for me Jo. So for you to even thinking that, that is just insane and you know it. I didn't leave you because i didn't love you. I left because i had kids that are five years old and didn't know me. Thought i abandoned them but turns out their mother kept me from even knowing I had kids. This wasn't part of our plan Jo. This threw off everything, and now, i am struggling to really understand everything. I am looking at flights now and I will be there, can you send me the address to her clinic please? I will see you tomorrow. Also i don't expect you to move to Kansas, i don't even want to be here."
Hitting send and Alex knew he had to be there, he didn't care how much the flight was. It was worth it to see her and see just what they can do. Seeing as he was going to be a father again, and this is what Jo and him wanted and now, here he was, going to be with her and trying to figure out everything else. He knew he had a lot of making up to do and he was willing to do anything.
Starting Again
@ImpudentMedico
Complicated was the word when it came to Alex and herself. From barely speaking; from the rage of hate she felt for him. To the common goal; which was to raise a healthy child. To push aside our distaste for each other; well more so on my part. Jo knew she could’ve had it easy by not engaging by avoiding Alex especially when they first messaged after a month of him being gone. She could’ve gotten through the pregnancy on her own. She was built for it; to be alone. But one confession; one text changed the relationship she had with him.
He was the dad; and as angry as she was with him; She didn’t want to be like Izzie; she didn’t want to keep a child from him. She still loved him; she wanted him to be apart of their child’s life even if it made her sick to see the pair had ended up. All that to say it wasn’t smooth sailing; but Jo had promised to keep him updated. To let him be there for her and their child.
A promise she intended to keep. And that’s why Jo found herself digging into her purse when she stepped foot into the New York airport.  Stepping to the side as she listened to people chat, she found her phone letting fingers dance along the keys.
[ Text} Alex.
“ I debated telling you, but a promise is a promise. I’m in New York. I’ll be staying with Callie and Arizona so you know I’ll be safe.”  Not wanting to keep talking; Jo came to the city to move on from the last chapter not be dragged back into the old. But Jo also knew they had to figure out the next steps together. One text at a time. Because let’s be honest he left once; why wouldn’t Alex do it again? It was a fear; the reason why Jo was keeping him at arms length. Protecting herself.
Slipping her phone into her coat pocket she slung her carry on over her shoulder and began to walk to the baggage claim; the signs directing her. A new Chapter; exhaling deeply Jo assured herself this was the right move for her.

no need to argue | michael/maria, break-up re-write
this is none of the things I said I was going to write, but it’s been sitting in my folder for months and it’s easier to finish than everything else.
-
“I would have done the same for you.” He insisted, gripping her hands tight in his. She watched as his face grew stern, almost defiant.
She shook off his left hand so that hers could be free. “No,” she said, sad but certain, “you wouldn’t have.”
“You don’t know that.” He said. She pushed a curl from his eyes, that stubborn one that was as unruly as he was.
“Yes, I do.” She knew she had her psychic face on, the one Rosa said was so obvious to the outside world but Maria was sure was subtle. She knew it was true. She could feel that it was true. He’d do so much for her, just not something that would risk Isobel and Max too. “And that’s ok Michael. It’s ok. Not every relationship is meant to be forever.”
“Maria, please-” She gently pressed her finger to his lips.
“Michael, don’t react. Don’t let me being in the hospital influence you. Think about the last few weeks.” She looked at him, face serious, no psychic face. “You put up a good front at CrashCon, but I know better.” He looked away. “Tell me the truth, how much longer would we have lasted?”
“I would have tried, Maria, you have to know I wouldn have done anything-” He cut himself off.
“I know Michael, that’s part of the problem. You would have tried and you would have ignored what you wanted.”
“Ok, then what do I want?”
“A family? Kids? The suburban American dream?”
He turned his head back towards her. She already knew she was right.
He swallowed. “So this isn’t about Alex?” He asked, voicing the one thing they never really spoke about. Sure, they talked about Alex all the time. Alex, who was quickly turning into Michael’s best friend, the person he turned to for help. Alex was her friend too, always would be, but their closeness suffered through deployments and dating, if she was being honest. There was never a question about it, if she needed him he’d come and she’d always be there for him, but their friendship had turned into something light and easy. Maybe it was just a reaction to what they both needed- Alex an escape from his family history and Maria an escape from discovering hers.
She shook her head.
He sighed and then leaned back into his chair. His hands let go of her hand so he could rub at his eyes.
“I never wanted you to think I was choosing you because I couldn’t have him,” he said, hands still covering his face.
“I never thought that, Michael.”
He nodded, though she wasn’t sure he agreed.
He sighed again. “You’re so wonderful, you know that?” He finally asked after a minute. “You’re beautiful and cunning and caring. It was hard not to want you, to want to be around you. And then I got to know you, really, and you were more than I ever imagined you could be.” He finally looked at her. “I know that there were things we didn’t agree about, but I thought ‘you know what? It’s not what I imagined but that’s ok’.”
He had tears in his eyes. Maria couldn’t lean forward far enough to wipe the one that fell on his cheek.
“You know, you were exactly what I needed?” He asked. She nodded.
“You were what I needed too.”
He kept his distance from her. She’d have to start getting used to that. He had the look on his face, the one that said he had something to say but didn’t actually want to say it. She’d been seeing it a lot recently, particularly when she and Isobel practiced her powers. Honestly, she had seen it before then too. She just hadn’t known what it meant. Now she knew, he was holding back what he knew she didn’t want to hear.
“It’s ok Michael, you can tell me.”
“You know that Alex came to me, after Noah’s funeral.” The ‘before we really started’ went unsaid. “I told him that I never say no to him, I just do what he wants and does as he says.” He picked at the bandana on his left hand. “It’s not really a him thing, it’s a me thing. I can’t say no to people- to him, to Izzy, to Max.” He took a deep breath. “I can’t say no to you either, Maria.”
Maria didn’t say anything. She bit her tongue, thinking of the bracelet, her powers, and his feelings on them. She had told him he could tell her; she had told him he didn’t need to hold back. She looked back at him. He still had tears in his eyes. Maria let herself reflect, instead of react. It seemed like reacting was all she had done for so long, just pushing herself through as life threw her one curveball after the next, one more problem she had to will herself through. It had been her life for years now, mercilessly pushing herself through everything, doing everything she could to take care of her mom, to not resent her friends their freedom, to stay put. She was a mercenary woman playing at being a nurturer.
She motioned for Michael to continue. She never really noticed how often he just waited for her cue.
“I think you’re right,” he said after a moment. He was still too far away for her to reach his hand. “Not every relationship is supposed to be forever.” He wouldn’t meet her gaze. “I noticed it, you know? How could I not? I wanted to talk, to be deeper, to know more. And you didn’t. I let it go. I was too thrilled you gave me another chance. And I felt like, maybe I could say no to you. We disagreed plenty. I’m realizing now that that wasn’t true. I’m too scared of losing you to actually do that.”
Michael grew quiet. “I never wanted to talk,” Maria admitted, as if either of them didn’t know. “You’d bring something up, I’d distract you.”
“I’d let you distract me.”
Maria shook her head. “I could see it, you know? You wanted to.” She sighed. “I guess that was part of the whole ‘scared of losing me’ thing, huh?”
Michael nodded. They stayed quiet for a moment. “I thought I wanted something light and easy, after everything.” Michael shrugged and gestured to nothing. “It was my first real, long-term relationship.” He looked off into the distance again. “I don’t think I’m made for light and easy, not if it’s going to last more than a few nights. So yeah, I think you’re right. The thing you haven’t actually said yet.”
“And what’s that Michael?”
He finally met her eyes.
“That we’re over.” He smiled at her, the same heartbroken smile she remembered from that morning they had kissed, that morning where she thought they were starting. She understood that smile more now, didn’t remember it in the haze of her own happiness and hope.
“We’re over,” she agreed. She took a deep breath. “This doesn’t mean that I don’t love you.”
He shook his head. “I didn’t think you didn’t. This doesn’t mean I don’t love you either. And it doesn’t mean I don’t want to be there for you still. You’re important to me.”
“You’re important to me too. That’s not going to change.”
At that, he finally leaned close enough to touch. She took his hand. He squeezed hers gently. They sat in silence for a few minutes until the nurse knocked on the door.
“Maria,” he said, “you have another visitor.”
“Okay,” she called back. “You can send them in.”
Michael let go of her hand and stood up. “I’ll let them have your undivided attention. I’ll see you tomorrow, ok?”
She nodded. “See you tomorrow.”
He moved to the door, almost bumping into Alex.
“Sorry Alex,” he said as he moved through the door.
“Michael, what’s---” but Michael didn’t turn back.
Maria could see Alex’s face. She knew he saw the tears still in Michael’s eyes. She knew he’d see the tears stains on her cheeks once he was close enough.
He moved quickly through the room and took the chair Michael had just left. He moved it closer to the bed.
“Maria, what’s wrong?” She shook her head. “Seriously, I can see how upset you both are.”
She shook her head again. “Nothing’s wrong Alex.”
“Then why are you crying?” He reached for her hand.
“Just because something is emotional, doesn’t mean it’s bad.” He looked at her, then leaned forward to wipe a tear from her cheek. “We broke up--” she started, but he cut her off.
“Okay, that’s ok. I can fix that. I’ll go talk some sense into him, it’s fine--”
“No Alex.” She let herself laugh a little as she silenced him, the same way she had silenced Michael earlier. “There’s nothing wrong. He and I broke up. We both agreed it was time.”
Alex shook his head. Maria let her finger drop from his lips. “But you guys were so good together.” He argued. She laughed again.
“We were what each other needed at the moment. So yes, it was good. It wasn’t going to last Alex.”
“I can fix this Maria,” he argued again.
“There’s nothing to fix Alex. We don’t want the same things.” She watched his face carefully as she said it. “I don’t want a family. I don’t want kids. I don’t want someone tying me down like that.”
Alex’s face was tight. “Did always dream of a big family. He used to talk about getting a dog. I kinda thought..” This time he cut himself off. “So that’s it? You guys go from being the perfect couple to nothing?”
“We were never perfect and you know it. If we were, we wouldn’t have ignored everything that wasn’t.” She laughed again. “I can’t believe I have to talk you into accepting this break up more than I had to talk him into it.” She pulled him into a hug. He let him.
“He’s bad at saying no to the people he cares about.”
“He mentioned that too. I think that’s what tipped him off. He never said no to me either, never pushed me either. Never really asked me for anything.”
“He does that,” Alex said, still wrapped up in her arms. She wasn’t going to let go any time soon. She may be okay with it, but she still did just break up with her first serious boyfriend in years. “Are you really ok Maria?” He asked, as if he was the psychic between them.
“I will be,” she said as she drew him in closer. She finally let him go. “Now, as my best friend, it’s your job to distract me from my heartbreak.”
Alex sat back in the chair. “Ok, what do you want to know?”
Maria smiled. “Tell me about the songs you’re writing.”
Alex protested, but Maria knew he’d tell her. They’d always have each other. They’d all be okay.

22+michael guerin?
thank you!
#22. all i ever wanted was the world [ao3]
“She asked too many personal questions.”
“Michael. It was a date. That’s what you do on dates.”
“Yeah, well, I didn’t like it.”
Michael ignored Isobel’s eye roll and huff, his eyes returning to his sketch. Though, sketch felt like too little of a word. He was designing a spaceship. That was bigger than a sketch. Maybe. Depends on who was asked, he supposed.
Isobel had been trying and failing to set him up with someone for months, though he wasn’t sure why. He understood on some level that it was because she felt bad, but it was misguided guilt. He didn’t need someone to entertain him while she was with her girlfriend and Max was with his. Michael was perfectly and utterly capable of keeping himself busy in one way or anything.
Besides, he could handle his own when it came to the romance department with no problems.
But Isobel seemed to enjoy finding guys and girls to send him on dates with. So he never complained, only found a reason to not go on a second date with them, and hoped she’d run out of people. She would eventually. There were only so many people in and around Roswell for him to choose from.
“Michael,” that voice he had memorized like it was his own called. Michael’s head popped up to see Alex, the owner of Crumbs, standing at the counter with the little bag that held the muffin he’d ordered and his coffee order in hand.
Michael basically scrambled to his feet and walked over, accepting it graciously. Alex grinned as he always did, bright enough to light up the sun itself.
“So, okay, I’m trying this new cupcake recipe. Can you try it for me real quick?” Alex asked, puppy eyes barely even having to kick into gear before Michael was complying. He’d do whatever Alex asked, he thinks.
He knows. Because he already has.
“Okay,” Michael agreed.
Alex held up a finger to signal to give him a second and then disappeared into the back. Michael glanced over his shoulder to see Isobel staring with raised eyebrows. He looked back to the counter.
“Okay, okay, it’s an apple pie cupcake,” Alex said, peeling down the paper. Michael quirked an eyebrow.
“Apple pie?”
“Yeah, it’s got a bit of a filling and the icing is whipped cream with a graham cracker dust,” Alex said, holding it out, “I’m thinking of making it a fall flavor, but I need a Michael’s opinion before I made the decision.”
Michael grinned and leaned forward, taking a bite right out of Alex’s hand. Alex had said before that taking something and giving it back was super unsanitary for the store and, well, who was Michael to tell him how to run his business.
“Mmmm,” Michael hummed, reaching up to wipe his bottom lip. Alex’s eyes turned‒something. It was like they’d brightened and darkened at the same time like he was so pleased that his pupils dilated. He liked the sight. “It’s good.”
“You like these or the raspberry cheesecake ones from a couple of weeks ago better?”
“Cruel of you to make me choose.”
“Please choose?”
“Maybe the raspberry cheesecake, if I have to choose? But that’s super sweet so it might not be for everyone. But also you could charge more for it because of the raspberries,” Michael brainstormed. Alex snorted a laugh and nodded.
“Here, take it. You have a good day, Michael,” Alex said, only keeping him long enough to grab a napkin and wipe his nose where a bit of whipped cream icing had gotten.
“You too, Alex.”
Michael grabbed his things and went back to Isobel who looked like she just had the most brilliant idea known to man. That immediately made him nervous. He tried to ignore it as he cautiously took a sip of his coffee. It was just right.
“I got it,” Isobel said, brightening up with her idea, “Alex. I’ll set you up with Alex.”
Typically, Michael would entertain her idea, let her think he’d be okay with that. This one, however, was too close and he immediately shook his head.
“No,” he said firmly.
“Why not? He clearly likes you.”
“I’m not having you set us up, I’m not doing that,” Michael insisted, shaking his head. Isobel made a face.
“You won’t even try? Is it because you actually like him?” Isobel asked. Michael sighed, looking at her.
“Isobel, I love you. But please stop. I don’t need help. I’m not looking for a relationship,” he said honestly. He was trying to focus on building a spaceship.
“I just don’t want you to be lonely,” Isobel said, “I mean, we’re almost thirty and you’ve never had a relationship.”
“I’m not lonely, though. I don’t need a relationship,” Michael insisted. Isobel rolled her eyes and that just started to be irritating. “I don’t. I can go my whole life without one and I’ll be happy.”
“You’re just saying that.”
“I’m not. It’s my brain, my feelings. I’m not you, Izzy. So, please, stop,” Michael said, his irritation starting to show in his tone. Isobel reached out to his arm, grabbing his wrist.
“Okay, okay, I’m sorry. I didn’t know you cared so much,” Isobel said. He didn’t really respond, but he shoved the cupcake Alex made over to her as a sign of peace. She accepted it.
Michael looked up and caught sight of Alex washing his hands in the little sink behind the counter, laughing with one of his employees. The sight made him smile a bit which he successfully hid behind his coffee.
“But, you’ve gotta be honest. Alex is cute,” Isobel said. Michael rolled his eyes.
“I mea, he’s not ugly.”
“Knew it.”
-
Michael dropped Isobel off at her house at the end of the night and took a deep breath, finally feeling free for a moment.
He loved Isobel, but she could be very overbearing. Instead of thinking too much about it, though, he drove his happy ass back to Crumbs. Before he did that, though, he made sure to turn his tracking off because if Isobel found out he was seeing Alex after dark he’d never live it down.
He parked around back beside Alex’s beat-up Honda Accord and climbed the fire escape with his sketchbook in hand. It led to an unlocked window and Michael happily let himself in. The apartment above Alex’s shop was empty outside of the 6-month old beagle that immediately perked up when she saw Michael.
“Hi, baby,” Michael cooed, placing his sketchbook and his keys on the counter and going to unlock her kennel. Her little barks filled the air and she jumped on Michael, enjoying all the pets he gave her. “Such a good little Mouse, aren’t you? Such a good girl. Where’d Daddy hide your treats this time?”
“I hide them because you give her too many,” Alex said as the door opened. Michael tilted his head back, smiling at the man in the doorway as Mouse licked his chin.
“How am I supposed to say no to this face, though?” Michael asked.
“The same way I say no to your face,” Alex said. He closed the door behind him, locking it with nothing but muscle memory and walking towards Michael. He kept his head tilted back, accepting the kiss on the forehead he gave.
Alex scratched Michael’s scalp and then Mouse’s head before walking into the kitchen area. He pulled a drink out of the fridge and looked at the notebook on the table.
“God, this shit’s so good, Michael. You ever thought about learning how to tattoo and see if you’d be any good at it?” Alex asked. Michael shook his head.
“Nah, I don’t want to touch that many people.”
“Fair enough,” he said, “Still. This is badass.”
“Thanks,” Michael said, slowly pulling himself off the floor. Mouse followed him at his feet. “Guess who Isobel tried to set me up with today.”
“Who?” Alex asked, raising an eyebrow as he reached out with his free hand to tug at Michael’s waistband. He grinned as he molded against his chest.
They weren’t, like, together. They were taking it slow. Alex was still constantly stressed over his business and Michael was still trying to figure out what to do with himself. In the meantime, they would hook up and spend time together. They didn’t want to tell anyone about it though because other people made things complicated.
They liked this.
“You,” Michael said, “I was like ‘no’ and then I finally told her to stop setting me up.”
“Took you long enough. Though love that it took her finally trying someone that might actually catch your attention,” Alex teased, wrapping his arm around his shoulders.
“I just didn’t want her figuring anything out. It’s none of her business,” Michael said. Alex hummed.
“I get it. I like what we’re doing. We get our own little world without all the bullshit,” Alex said. Michael smiled at him, nuzzling his nose against his cheek.
“Yeah, exactly. Though feeding me cupcakes might not be as subtle as you think.”
Alex huffed a laugh and craned his head to finally, finally press his lips against his. The kiss was short but that was okay because Michael knew more was coming.
They weren’t in a rush. They had all the time in the world.
“I don’t plan to stop.”
“Good.”

Alex wasn’t trying to keep bringing up the fact he was going back to Kansas. He wasn’t deliberately trying to hurt Jo, but she also made it clear in that supply closet neither of us had control of what we wanted. It didn’t matter if we both till held love for each other. At the end of the day; she had to put our children first. Man that was awkward to say. A family was the goal; to give our children everything we never had growing up. But man did our lives spin out of control. And did I believe Jo and I would be sparing another conversation now if I hadn’t ended up in a high risk situation? If I had ended up traveling back to Kansas as planned, would she have called? Would we be friends? No Alex was no idiot, she made her intentions clear, it pained me to admit even to myself.
And I wasn’t asking for Jo to reassure me, that I was a good dad; I said it for myself. But her tone now, he decided it was best to brush over the topic, he didn’t want to upset Jo farther. Apparently whatever I said now when it came to returning to my children seemed to set her off. I could read her; the stray features; and no I didn’t want to hurt Jo.
I meant what I said when I said I knew I wouldn’t be able to walk away from her; I loved Jo, I always would. But right now its obvious neither of us were prepared to make the sacrifices needed to make any form of a relationship work. Not that i had any right to ask Jo to move her life, especially to a boring ass town in Kansas that was filled with farmers markets and farms in distance from the main town. The hospital was a good distance away; that’s why when Alex tended to work extra shifts overnights he’d crash at the hospital on call rooms.
Licking over my ips, I dared to ask the obvious that lingered on my mind now, as my eyes inched to meet her beautiful brown ones. “ Jo..as nice as the thought is of having you to help me through this. We all know I’ll be one hell of a cranky patient. I have to ask if the plane crash didn’t happen would we have spoken again? We both know nothings changed. I know I love you, and I know you love me too. But our families have to come first here, I can’t do the shake a future we once wanted so close to reach only for it to be ripped out from under us.” Alex for once was the sane speaker, despite every ache and hold in his body right now. If he managed to get his nerves shaking through his body again. The jury was out on that one. And here we go, Izzie.. How many times did I have to say me leaving had nothing to do with Izzie and only about the twins. Cue the slight roll of his eyes. “ Stop, making this about Izzie. Trust me she’s the last person I will be letting help me. We don’t talk, I’m in Kansas for the kids, and now that you have parker you should of all people understand that. I’m not going to keep rolling on this. I know you mean well but please don’t make this about izzie..” I added, I swear that women was the headache in Kansas, if I could i’d take the kids and move to Seattle but I had no rights to moving with them, and until I had that sorted I had to hold off on any altering decisions. We helped each other; leaned on each other; it’s Jo, she supported me always and I always knew the superstar surgeon she’d always be. All that say I think we needed to just stop bringing up Izzie, if she didn’t trust me when I said the kids was all I cared about..
It was her; not me. Besides just hours ago, Jo couldn’t wait to see me leave, so what changed? I wasn’t being difficult, I just wanted us to be honest with each other.

@warriorqueenmd
Accidents; they have a way of whipping us into shape. Alex could tell you the amount of times he’s tended to patients from car wrecks, from plane crashes, and trains where it was two people who either were denying how they felt about each other. Or had broken up and one risk of never seeing the other again was a motivation. A motivation to admit to what rested in your heart. Alex knew he was the guy who made mistakes. He had a tenacity to lose his temper, he liked to believe he was an okay guy. But he also knew when it came to people he loved; he fought tooth and nail for. Jo she was the love of his life; he knew it in his heart. But he also felt his back against a wall.
He had a family that had nothing to do with her; and this crash happened because he was again walking away from what rested in his heart. He had to ask himself if this was a sign. If this crash was an indication that he should be here in Seattle. Alex told himself he’d be damned if he walked away from her; because the second he laid his eyes on her again he knew. He was still hopelessly in love with her. But Jo she had a child; he had two kids in Kansas the odds did feel like they were stacked against him. He didn’t want to hurt her; again. And he saw Jo; he read her face like a book. She was barely holding it together. He hated himself for being the reason why she cried, why she had to walk away from him.
He knew he was bleeding; it was awful because right now he could barely feel the movement in his legs, like his nerves had stopped functioning. But he saw it as a good sign that his eyes were opened, that he was alert. Because the doctor in him was assessing his own injuries. The bump on the head; the headache he felt each time he attempted to turn his head on his own. The worse part was the droplets of blood coming out of his leg. He saw the concerned expressions on Hunt and Bailey. Surgeon; he knew his life was in good hands. But given that Jo was the one on his side; she was the one that earned the job of distracting him, he had to use this opportunity for himself. Her lame joke; between baby vomit and cat; neither were quite the win if you asked him.
Holding his lips together; he attempted to stop himself from laughing. A gentle small hint of a smile pulled at the corners of his lips. “ You need better stories Jo.” A light handed insult; but if he by some miracle survived and we tried to figure this unconventional relationship out; I needed to trust Jo would be able to make up a story at the beat of a bat. I made up stories all the time on a whim for my kids; the bedtime stories were our routines, the memory of the last time; I saw them. A few years to get to know Eli and Alexis, and now my life was flashing before my eyes. But not without saying the words; uttering the I love you; because if I was on my death bed, I needed Jo to know. It was always her; it would always be her.
Hand laced through her; a slight tightest wrapped around her smaller palm. She loved me, now Jo could just be saying the words; so I wouldn’t feel like I was baring my soul out to her; but I didn’t want to hear the words; I needed to say it as my last words. Eyes slightly grew wide when I felt it; her lips on mine. As if no time had passed. Eyes shifted closed for a second. To hold onto this moment; the moment of kissing her again. It ended too soon if you asked me.
“ Promise you won’t go anywhere.” I’d be back; I wasn’t going to let our story end like this. I heard Hunt; which is why My eyes were only focused on Jo; she was a calmness within this storm. Each movement of the gurney inching closer to the OR, I knew it was close when Hunt eyed both Jo and I. Her hand; I had brought her palm to my lips; pressing a gentle kiss to her skin.
“ This isn’t over. It’ll be us at the end okay.” A promise; written in my words, I’d come back to her; I swore it with everything I had. Slowly I let go of her hand; As I nodded to Hunt. It was time to stop the damn bleeding. It was time to get this show on the road. Eyes fluttered shut as we made our way right into the OR. A minute before I felt the nurses start talking.
“ We’re going to inject you so you don’t feel the pain, if the doctors want to repair your leg, and the wounds on your head.” I didn’t need to nod; my blood was dropping; I felt it in my body. I made a promise and I knew Jo; she’d hold me to the promise. Eyes opened looking right at the ceiling. Eyes glued to the white ceiling as I felt the injection to my arm; it was numb before I felt the mask lower down onto my face.
The last image I saw was Hunt and Bailey who came to stand on each side of the table. “ We’ve got you Karev.” If I’d bet on any pair of hands it was theirs as eyes fluttered shut drawing me to darkness.

Thoughts on Grey’s Anatomy: 17X14
SPOILERS AHEAD!!!
So, if you read my review from the previous episode you know I turned out to be mostly wrong about this one. That being said, I really enjoyed the episode. I was never a ride or die japril shipper so I don't think this episode was as emotional for me as it was for other fans, but I enjoyed it. It was nice to see Jackson and April back on screen together! They always had great chemistry and I really enjoyed their scenes. And how cute was Harriet in this episode? She was SO adorable! I like that Jackson went to go visit his father to try and figure out what his Mom was talking about and I'm glad he got some closure there. That was nice to see. The scene where Robert tells Jackson why he left was super emotional and the acting was sublime!
I'm glad that Robert is giving lunches to people who need them in the community and is helping in his own way. It doesn't make up for what he did, but it's nice to know that he's making a go of the life he has with the diner and his coffee blend. It did bug me a bit that they played with time so much because it was difficult for me to figure out in the beginning what order the events went in which kind of took me out of the episode a little bit.
My biggest pet peeve with this episode was the whole thing with the meat slicer. Let me explain. It would have taken Robert a few minutes maximum to teach Jackson how to use it, but instead Jackson acts like the entitled pretty boy that he is and says he can operate it no problem. It's because of attitudes like this that people get hurt in workplace accidents because they assume that because it looks easy that it is. Anyone CAN operate a meat slicer, but you shouldn't without proper training.
Attitudes like that perpetuate the idea that people who work in hospitality, retail, construction, and other such fields are "simple" and that anyone can do it. It devalues the important work that so many people do, and it often results in untrained people getting hurt. So yeah as someone whose worked in both hospitality and retail and whose family works in construction I could have done without the harmful stereotype that we are all simpletons and Jackson's BS elitist attitude and him cutting himself on the meat slicer. Jackson's clearly never worked a day in his life outside of being a doctor and it shows.
I too was surprised when April agreed so suddenly to go with Jackson to Boston. I didn't think it was fair for her to agree without talking to Matthew first, but then she revealed that they split up. Going into this episode I really thought they were faking us out because April, a deeply religious woman, leaving her husband and step-daughter for Jackson didn't make any sense to me. But finding out that April and Matthew split up changes that. At first, I thought that would be impossible because getting a divorce in the early months of the pandemic was pretty difficult but the fact that they've separated but not officially divorced makes more sense.
Jackson says in the first half of the season that Matthew is spending more time with Harriet than he or April are because they've both been taking so many COVID shifts which at the time came across as them being a happy family. But taken in context with what April says in this episode it makes it sound like Matthew was spending time with Harriet because Jackson and April were working all the time and that put strain on their marriage. What Jackson is talking about would have happened in March or early April and this episode takes place sometime in June. Sadly, a lot of couples have split up during the pandemic in the way that April describes so while sad it was realistic.
While it would obviously be sad and confusing for the kids April makes it clear that Matthew and Ruby have the support of his sister and mother and her and Harriet have Jackson. I’m sad that April and Matthew’s relationship didn’t work out. I really liked them together. I do think it was nice though that they had Jackson ride off into the sunset with April and Harriet having left the door open for reconciliation the way they did with Arizona and Callie when Arizona moved to New York with Sofia.
Also let’s talk about the big elephant in the room. I get that this is Jackson's send off, but I still don't understand why Jackson couldn't run the Foundation from Seattle. That's what Catherine has been doing on and off for the last few years. Tom and Richard the previous and current Chief Medical Officers of the Catherine Fox Foundation are both based in Seattle. Why is moving to Boston necessary? It's their foundation can't they just move the Headquarters? Also were in a pandemic wouldn’t Jackson be working remotely anyway? Why do they have to move to Boston? What’s in Boston that they need so badly?
That being said, I'm glad that Jackson is getting a proper send off and will have time to say goodbye to everybody and have some heart to hearts and do it properly. We don't get that with every character. What in the heckity heck is Jo going to do next season? She doesn't have anyone to sleep with or date and she's leaving general surgery for OBGYN. That doesn't leave a whole lot of story for her. What is she going to do? Talk to Levi about his relationship problems and deliver babies? You could make a reoccurring character out of that sure but not a main character which is what Jo is currently billed as.
I'd like to see Jo adopt Luna and I think that could be really interesting so if they go that route, I could get on board but if not, I don't know what she's going to do. To be honest Jo isn't my favourite character, but I still feel bad for her. She has serious abandonment issues and every time she heals someone else leaves her! Jo's mother left her at a fire station as a baby. She wanted nothing to do with her as an adult. She did the work to get all whole and healed and was finally ready to have kids with Alex when finds out about the twins and leaves her for Izzie.
Jo does the work to get better and work on her issues and begins a friends with benefits relationship with Jackson only for him to disappear to the woods after Jo called him out on it at the beginning of their relationship and has now decided to move to Boston with April and Harriet to head up the Foundation. Girl can't win. Also does April know that Jackson has been sleeping with Jo? I mean she didn’t tell him that her and Matthew separated so I guess she can’t be too mad at him, but still. Awkward.
I think Jackson loves camping more than anyone else ever loves camping. His departure means he won't be attending Maggie's wedding. I have to admit I was looking forward to the awkwardness. I’m curious to see what Catherine is going to do now. Will she retire? Will she go back to being an attending surgeon full time? Does this mean they are going to have to find someone new to head up Plastics? Are they going to introduce a new character for Season 18?
I feel like finding a replacement for Jackson could go either way. Because I didn't think I would like Hayes when he took over Peds but now I love him and he's one of my favourite characters! I still miss Alex, but Hayes has been a great addition. I root for him and Meredith so hard and he was one of my favourite parts of Season 16.
Also, poor Bailey! This woman is just trying to keep the hospital afloat and she's losing surgeons and doctors left, right, and centre. Alex moved to Kansas. DeLuca died. Jackson is moving to Boston. Jo is switching specialties. Meredith's out with COVID! And let's not forget that Bailey lost her Mom to COVID not that long after she suffered a miscarriage after having a heart attack way too young and she deals with OCD which the pandemic is doing nothing to help! This poor woman!
Onto next week’s promo, I'm glad that they are doing a proper send off with Jackson. I'm also super excited that Meredith is up and talking and moving around! I've missed her! Although I am mad we have to wait another two weeks!!! I mean come on! We waited two whole months for the show to come back and then we waited for two weeks between episodes 13 and 14 and now we have to wait another two weeks for episode 15. Come on! Meredith and Hayes better rise as a couple when the show returns because if they don’t I will be so disappointed.
Until next time!

Alex was not one to just leave. He had a life in Seattle. He had people in Seattle. The family he has always wanted. He also had Jo. The woman who loved him despite everything, and he was grateful to have someone who loves him. He knew her past and he knew she has been through a lot as well, and he knew her fears. She knew Alex’s fears and didn’t run. This is what made their relationship good. They have talked about everything they both feared and Alex let his walls down and Jo let her walls down. They had future plans and wanting to just really be together, but he knows what he did, it ruined all of that. He hid something so big from her and he hated himself for it.
He left a letter that was a lie. It was a lie about where he wet and who he was with. It was a lie about why he left. He just — he needed time to really get himself together. But he didn’t want to hurt her in the process but here he was. He just needed to make sure he was going to be okay before confronting the truth about his health. But he just didn’t want to hurt her, but he knew Jo was hurt. He knew by the past she had and Alex, he had to take that into consideration when it came to coming back and letting her know exactly what happened. He was back in Seattle and he was struggling with coming to terms at the fact that Jo was hurt. More then he imagined at this point.
He lied. Izzy and him, they don’t have a family but it was easier then telling her the real reason. But now it was out in the open. Maybe it was more of him being proud and not wanting to be weak to everyone around him. He had to take care of himself and hopefully Jo would understand. Hopefully Jo wouldn’t be too mad because he came back when he could. But it was done. The damage was done and she was hurt. He knew he had some work to do but it was more just having her be there so she understood just what was going on. He knew they needed to talk, because around others it wasn’t going to work. It would never work if he being honest. So he went to the loft to actually talk to her without anyone around.
He wanted to go home because that is where he felt comfortable and being in his own bed. The one he shared with Jo. He knew it was a lot to take in. He knew Jo needed time and Alex couldn’t fault her for that. He couldn’t really fault her for the fact that she was hurting. His fingers find her hair and he combs through the back of it feeling some sort of comfort from all the pain he has been in, and his bad genetics being sent down from his family. Something he wasn’t proud of either but he was there, and he wanted Jo to be the one to comfort him. The one who really just comforted him when she felt like he wasn’t going to make it.
“I know Jo, and trust me, it wasn’t easy. But I needed answers before I faced it and seen what I needed to do. I didn’t want anyone to know here. Just, they all talk and I didn’t need that. Just, I know everyone hates me who I sent letters to. I didn’t want to hide it from you Jo, just, something inside of me told me that if I was not myself, and I was sick, you wouldn’t understand and think I was being dramatic. I know you Jo, and I know you wouldn’t, but my brain told me. So, I don’t know.” He was being honest and he just wanted to really be the one Jo trusted and he knows he messed that up, but he was working on it. They were married and they needed to work on this.
“Just know I don’t want to do this alone, I need you. I need you to be here for me. I love you. And I am sorry I hurt you.” He was being honest but he was here and he wasn’t going anywhere. “Where do we go from here?” He was giving her the control over what they were doing next.
Continued storyline with @briskofagony
Alex knows the way that he left wasn’t ideal. He wrote a letter and lied about everything. Maybe it was just all in his head that Jo would just forget about it and move on. But she didn’t. She didn’t at all. The letter was just a way of getting out of something and doing this alone so she didn’t have to see him sick. That was not something that Alex asked for. He didn’t ask for being sick, but New York was the best place to go with the hospitals there and the options they had. That is why he went there and that is why Alex was mad at himself for writing those words and telling Jo something that would never happen. He knows she had to be hurt, but he didn’t know until he got back in Seattle.
He thought he was protecting her. He thought he was really doing the right thing by Jo. Really just trying to do what was right for him and her at that time, but seeing the look on her face and seeing the look when he told her that, he figured he didn’t do anything right by no means. Maybe he was just scared about the fact that he was sick and he could have not been the same person, so he was just trying to really feel things out and see where he was when he got back. But it didn’t make it easier. It made it harder knowing that Jo was hurt and he was the one who caused all the hurt she was feeling.
That is why he wanted to let her in on the meeting about everything that was going on. About his work that had to be done to get back to work and just regarding his heath and the treatments he had to still undergo. But seeing the look in her eyes, he knew they needed to talk. He needed to explain himself and they needed to get back to being how they were before he left. So when she called he didn’t miss the opportunity to get back to the place they used to call home with one another. Where they used to have a lot of good times and maybe, after this talk they will be getting back to that. But Alex wasn’t going to push at all. He knows he messed up and he knew she wouldn’t forgive him that easily. But it was worth a shot.
He just wanted to be honest with her. Maybe this wasn’t his best interest and maybe this wasn’t an ideal situation but he was learning to let it all go and just talk this time. He wanted her to understand and Jo deserved that. Nodding his head, he wanted Jo involved in all of this now. He wanted Jo to be apart of his recovery now that he knew he would be okay and she wouldn’t miss out on anything else because Alex doesn’t want that either. He wants her there. “Of course, I want you there Jo. I am sorry for leaving the way I did, I kind of panicked I guess you can say and didn’t really know what I was doing at the time. But now I know what I’m doing and I know I was dumb. So I’m sorry. Really. All that happens, you are involved now.”
Alex was exhausted and just wanted to lay down and with his arms around her and backing into the bed and laying down and she was beside him, Alex can’t help but chuckle at her words. “I am holding you to that. Just right now, I am so exhausted and I’m sorry. I know I am just getting back here, but I need a nap. So see you when I wake up in a little bit?” He presses a soft kiss onto her head and his hand was rested on her back and before he knew it, sleep took over and his body was finally relaxed after being tense for a while.

☕️ alex leaving jo for izzie
*sighs* Okay, so I have several thoughts about this, but I don’t know if I’m going to do a good job at articulating them properly. This is going to be long.
So, this is probably my most unpopular opinion of all time... I don’t like Alex Karev. I never have. I think he’s annoying, a bully, and quite frankly, he did a lot of terrible things that the fandom doesn’t really address. I mean, when I finished Grey’s and I went online to see if others disliked Alex, I was disappointed that I found very few people that agreed with me. This fandom LOVES this guy, and I’m just here in my little corner like “nope, he sucks.”
I think the thing that bugs me the most is the hypocrisy in the fandom when it comes to Izzie vs Alex.
When Izzie left the show, because Katherine Heigl left the show, she became the evil bitch who abandoned Alex, that horrible ungrateful woman who didn’t stay by her husband’s side despite all he did for her. We know the reason Izzie’s exit from the show was so poorly handled was because of Shonda’s issue with Katherine not submitting herself for an Emmy for season 4 (which tbh, I can’t blame her? She was right when she said the material she received that season wasn’t Emmy-worthy, especially in comparison to Izzie’s storylines in the previous two seasons, which were actually heart-wrenching and better developed), so I genuinely don’t get where people’s beef with Izzie comes from. She was written that way because of issues behind the scenes.
And if I’m honest here... people forget that when Izzie left the first time, she was under a lot of emotional distress. She was BATTLING CANCER, JUST LOST HER FRIEND IN THE WHOLE WORLD, AND GOT FIRED FROM THE HOSPITAL!!!! Sorry for yelling, but this fandom doesn’t have any consideration for Izzie’s feelings. Webber fired her in a stone-cold way and heavily implied Alex helped him with that decision. So of course Izzie left. She was traumatized!! And then SHE CAME BACK. She came back and wanted to make things right with Alex, but he told her TO LEAVE. He was the one who did that. So what was Izzie supposed to do? Stay in a hospital where she has to work with a man who told her “I love you so much I almost hate you” (wtf was that line)? Yeah, I can’t blame her for leaving.
People always wanna talk about how Izzie is selfish when she donated 8 million dollars to open a free clinic, was the only resident who bothered to teach the interns (while Alex complained about working on the clinic and said the interns were stupid, lmao, what a guy), donated money to pay for a girl’s back surgery, decorated the house for Christmas and made socks for Meredith and George (and Doc!!), tried to be nice to the doctors from Mercy-West (and ended up getting called a bitch for it :///) and was overall a happy, sweet person who cared about her patients and her friends. Izzie was amazing, why are you all so mean to her?? Because she left Alex’s annoying ass?? If that man was my husband, I’d leave him too, lmao
ANYWAY... so yeah, Alex ain’t shit to me. The first thing he did when he met Izzie was tell her she wouldn’t last as a surgeon, then sexually harassed by hanging pictures of Izzie’s modeling days all over the locker room, cheated on her with Olivia, made fun of her relationship with Denny, called her a stupid bitch and stole one of her surgeries, made her cancer all about himself, didn’t comfort her after George died (seriously, this was so fucked up and nobody ever talks about it. Alex was so jealous of Izzie’s love for George and he showed it all the time)... that man was not “the perfect husband”. He’s lucky Izzie gave him the time of day after the stunt he pulled in the locker room. She was the only one of the interns who gave him a chance, when Meredith, Cristina, and George wanted nothing to do with him (and who could blame them).
He also bullied the hell out of George and April, especially April. People defend this by saying “oh, but everyone bullied April!!” (that isn’t a solid defense, btw), and while the other characters were annoying for that (I love Cristina, but her treatment of April was so awful, same with Meredith, Lexie, and even Jackson was a dick to her at times), Alex always took things to an extreme level. When they’re in the on-call room and are about to have sex, Alex starts yelling at her and saying all that gross stuff about not wanting to hold her virgin hand, and then we see April choking on her own tears at Cristina’s house and Alex never apologized to her for that, he just continued to bully her. He ALMOST KILLED Andrew, and I know that he beat him up because he thought he was assaulting Jo, but he didn’t even try to make things right with him?? He could have killed him or ruin his entire career, but the show had Alex be portrayed as the victim and the other characters didn’t seem to be bothered by what he did?? How did Bailey appoint him as temporary chief when he had a record??
Okay, so this turned into an anti-Alex rant more than anything else, but all this needed to be said. I know he became a better doctor and everything, but he never clicked as a character for me. His friendship with Meredith seemed forced (Cristina was gone, so Meredith needed to hold on to someone, right??), and it was very shitty how it took Meredith TWO YEARS to respect Jo as Alex’s girlfriend and Alex just let Meredith treat her like crap?? Never change, Karev. I don’t care about his friendship with Arizona, either.
So... this guy left Jo. He cheated on her, lied to her, and then left her in a letter. And the fandom is like “okay, but Alex didn’t do it!!! The writers ruined him!!!”, oh, wow, so when Izzie leaves Alex she’s a bitch, but when Alex leaves Jo, it was the writers??? Alex should be the most hated character on the show because what he did was horrible, but the fandom gives him a pass. Y’all hate Izzie, but this guy is okay in your eyes???
Another unpopular opinion, but I don’t like Jo either. She’s boring to me; I don’t care about her storylines (I find them quite repetitive), and I never cared about her relationship with Alex (they had zero chemistry to me). So no, I don’t care that they’re over. I do wish Alex had taken her with him, lmao.
I hate that they made Alex and Izzie end up together because now EVERYONE is blaming Izzie for Alex’s exit. “She hid the children from him!!!” Alex SIGNED his rights away and told Izzie she could do whatever she wanted with his sperm. It’s not Izzie’s fault Alex decided he now wanted to be a dad to those kids. Why does Izzie get all the blame for all of this? Alex is a grown man who made a choice. We also never saw them reunite on screen, so we have no idea what they spoke about. Maybe Alex didn’t even tell her he was married. I mean, he had no problem lying to his wife about where he was, so who’s to say he didn’t lie to Izzie, too?
I know, I KNOW that Alex leaving Jo like that is bad writing. But the only reason I care is because I hate that this storyline made my favorite character the target of fandom hypocrisy and hate. But to be honest, Alex got a better ending than most. George, Lexie, Mark, and Derek died horrible and painful deaths. Callie and April also had shitty exists. The ONLY one who had an exit worthy of her character was Cristina (not counting Addison because she went to have her own spin off).
I don’t know if I have anything else to add, tbh. If you hate Izzie but love Alex, you’re a hypocrite.
Oh, and George and Izzie forever <333

In defense of Owen Hunt
Just a heads up, this isn’t going to be me saying we shouldn’t hold fictional characters like these accountable. We should, and if someone did something similar in real life, we should hold them accountable too. This is my opinion and I felt the need to write it after re-watching older seasons of Grey’s and honestly would have probably written it earlier but I just didn’t make time for it.
Owen Hunt isn’t perfect. Yeah, there are better characters than him on Grey’s and that’s fine. But honestly I can’t even go into any of the Grey’s tags without seeing people hate on him and I just feel like I don’t understand why people hate his guts so much but still support other flawed characters.
Amelia Shepherd is my favorite character. To be honest, I didn’t start watching Grey’s until Caterina became a permanent cast member. Before that, I just watched Private Practice and the crossovers between the two shows. Amelia is my hero, but she’s almost as flawed as Owen. If you haven’t seen her intervention on Private Practice, or even her spiral that led up to that, you don’t know her. She has said and done a lot of awful things, but the reason she’s my favorite character is because she is flawed. Her addiction and her trauma and her emotions that sometimes run so high are what make her so interesting and beautiful. Without those things, I don’t think I’d love her quite as much.
But over time, she has grown and changed and evolved and become even better, and I feel like no one’s giving Owen credit for what he’s done. I know we haven’t seen much of it, and I’m pissed that the writers don’t seem to care about showing much of it, but Owen has done things to try to get better.
When he had that flashback and choked Cristina, by the end of that episode he was letting Derek scan his brain to help with his PTSD. After his relationship with Amelia was really over, he went to therapy. It’s been a really, really slow process but he’s doing better, and I think it’s in part because of those women in his life.
It’s crazy to me that people will trash him because of things he’s said and done but not other characters. For example, I saw people loving on Alex Karev. He’s changed too, obviously, but what about when he plastered half naked pictures of Izzie in the locker room? What about the first few seasons when he was a total asshole? He’s obviously not perfect either, but he got better. And let’s not forget things Derek has said and done. He called Meredith a whore once when they weren’t together, chose Addison over her once, forgot to even tell her about Addison until she showed up looking for him, hit Meredith’s engagement ring into the woods with a baseball bat, tried to make her out to be the bad guy when he got the job in DC, I could go on.
I’ll be honest, I didn’t like Meredith at first. I hated her for the way she treated Amelia regarding Derek’s death. I didn’t think I would ever really like her, but now I do, because her relationship with Amelia has changed and grown over time, and they’re close.
I still care about Owen and what happens to his character, and I’m not afraid to say it. Is he an idiot sometimes? Oh yeah. Does he still fuck up sometimes? Absolutely, but he’s not the same character he was when he first came on the show. I think we all need to remember that the characters we love have all done some fucked up shit at one point or another.
Obviously I can’t make people love Owen. If you still wanna hate him, that’s fine. But hating on the actor, Kevin McKidd, is not okay. Not in the slightest. He’s an actor and a human being, and he’s not actually Owen Hunt, so remember that shit before you go attacking him, because that’s not fucking cool.

It Takes a Village
Title is subject to change. This fic is in a different format then my other fics, it is substantially longer than almost any chapter of Begin Again or one shot i’ve ever written. Also @herrera-n-hayes confirmed for me that this may be one of the most angsty fics I’ve ever written. Apologies if this causes you to go on an emotional rollercoaster. I tapped into my dark and twisty side to write this. Have fun :)
Word at Grey-Sloan Memorial spread fast – only a few hours after being admitted into the hospital after being found unconscious in the parking lot, practically the whole staff knew that Meredith Grey was once again in a fight for her life.
She’d woken up 4 hours later, with countless text messages from her friends at the hospital. She’d wondered how everyone found out so quickly and why everyone was acting like her exhaustion was just a big deal. That was, until she realized she’d become a patient in the COVID-19 Unit at Grey-Sloan Memorial Hospital. What she didn’t realize was that her closest friends at the hospital were inundating her old friends that’d moved with seemingly hourly updates about her condition.
-
“Hey Yang, I found Grey passed out in the parking lot. Not sure why she’s not responding, just thought I’d let you know. I’ll keep you updated.” Cormac Hayes messaged Cristina Yang about Meredith the moment he got the chance. He knew she’d want to know if something were to happen to her best friend. “Okay. Thanks.” Was all he got back from his former boss.
The next morning. “She woke up a little while ago, in case you want to facetime her. She’s tested positive for COVID. She’s not taking it very well.” He sent her the update. Not too long afterwards, she replied. “Ugh, seriously? Great. Just great. Um, okay. Yeah, I’ll facetime her. Thanks for letting me know. Get yourself tested as well. Also, she’s incredibly bitchy when she’s in the hospital, so word of advice: stay on her good side.” Cormac chuckled slightly at Cristina’s advice. “I’ll try my best” He responded. Seconds later, he got paged away, back to the peds floor. He didn’t want to leave Meredith, he certainly would’ve much rathered paging her to join him, in order to spend some time alone with her, and see her work her surgical magic.
-
“Meredith has COVID.” Maggie said through tears once Alex picked up his phone. “Damnit. Damnit!” Alex yelled. “Please just tell me it’s a mild case.” Maggie sighed. “Well, she was found unconscious in the parking lot of the hospital, so I don’t know. I hope it’ll just be mild.” She told him truthfully.
“You’re her power of attorney.” Maggie reminded him, after remembering herself. “I… I can’t. I would, if I could be there in person. I swear to god, I would in a heartbeat. But I can’t travel. She has to be okay.” Maggie closed her eyes and grimaced at Alex’s worry. “Does Yang know?” Alex finally said after a few moments of silence. “Uh, yeah. Hayes is keeping her updated.” On the other side of the phone, Alex looked confused. “Hayes? Who’s that? And how does he know Yang?”
Maggie had forgotten that Alex had never gotten the chance to meet Hayes or co-chief with him because of his formerly unexplained absence. “Uh, long story, but I’ll try to make it short. He’s the new you. Chief of Peds, that is. He worked with Cristina in Switzerland, she sent him here, he and Meredith became friends. They’re... weirdly close.” Alex raised his eyebrows on the other end of the phone. “Hmm. I’ll have to give Yang a call later today. Okay, Pierce, I have to go, but keep me updated. Okay?” “Okay.” End call.
-
“Torres! How are you holding up in New York?” Miranda Bailey asked her former classmate. She knew that New York was hit hard by COVID. “It’s a madhouse here, Bailey. What about you?” Miranda silently shook her head as she went over every little issue in the hospital. “Oh! Hi Bailey!” Arizona Robbins’ voice piped up from the other end of the phone. “Hey Robbins. Uh, it’s crazy over here too. Grey just tested positive last night after being found unconscious and pulled off the pavement by our chief of peds. It feels like everything is on fire and we have no way of getting out.” She said, entering her office. The only place she could find some solace, and take off her mask within the hospital because she was alone.
“Wait. Meredith has COVID? What?” Calliope’s voice quickly changed from frustrated with the state of the world, to an intense worry. “And Alex found her?” Arizona followed. “Yes, she did. And oh boy, is she pissed. And Arizona, no. Alex no longer works at Grey-Sloan. Cormac Hayes is our chief of pediatrics, he was recommended for the job by Cristina Yang. So, figures he’d be the one to find Meredith Grey passed out on the ground.” She said with a slight sarcastic undertone to her final sentence. “What?? What did Alex do now?” Arizona’s voice peaked. “Uh… he quit. And moved to Kansas. And divorced Jo to be with Izzie Stevens.” Callie let out a huge sigh and chuckled to herself, remembering when George had left her to be with Izzie. “You’re kidding…” Arizona said seriously. “I wish I was.” Bailey said. “Well, keep us updated on Meredith. Good luck out there.” Callie said, trying her best not to show how worried she was for her friends at Grey-Sloan. “Will do. You too, the both of you, stay safe.” End call.
-
4 days later. Meredith was only getting worse. After facetiming with Meredith, Hayes picked up his phone again and dialed Cristina Yang’s number. He knew the time difference was insane, but he also knew that Yang wouldn’t care about the time when she heard the update about her friend. “Hayes, what the hell. It’s like, 3am.” Cristina scolded him as she wished about going back to sleep. “It’s Grey. She’s doing worse, Yang. I’ve tried my best to be there with her whenever I can, but god it’s so suffocating to see her deteriorate the way she is.” Cristina was now wide awake. “Hayes, this is Meredith Grey we’re talking about. She’s practically immortal. Compared to everything else she’s survived, this virus is nothing.” Hayes chuckled slightly at Cristina’s words. “You know, it’s funny. I told her that this virus had nothing on her as well.” The former colleagues went silent for a few moments.
“She told me she’s scared to die.” Cormac finally said after he regained his train of thought. “You must be pretty special then. She doesn’t just open up like that to anybody.” Cristina said, smirking to herself at the other end of the line. Hearing Cristina say that made Cormac’s heart start to race, and the little internal butterflies appeared as he thought about his relationship with Meredith Grey. “Alright, I know it’s late. Get back to sleep. And for the love of god, don’t tell me that you’re afraid if you fall asleep you won’t wake up again, as well.” Cristina laughed slightly. “Keep me updated, and let me know if there’s anything I can do.” She ordered him. “Got it. Night, Yang.” Cristina yawned. “Night, Hayes. Keep an eye on my girl for me.” End call.
-
“How’s she doing?” Alex’s rough morning voice rang through Maggie’s phone. “Not good, Alex. Her lungs, I mean- I just don’t know. It’s not promising for a speedy recovery.” She said, taking a deep breath. Sometimes, Maggie had to remind herself that she could breathe properly. Alex groaned on the other end of the phone call. “I hate this. I hate that she’s alone. She’s always had me, or Shepherd, or Yang by her side, laying with her on those hospital beds. Even if we were all there, she’d still be alone. I hate every single part of this.” Maggie sighed. She almost couldn’t handle the amount of anguish she was hearing from Alex. “Well, if it’s any consolation, even though we can’t lay with her, she’s not alone. Someone is always with her. If I’m not in the room, sitting beside her bed, Amelia will facetime her. Or Hayes will be in there, cracking jokes with her and distracting her. If he’s not on the peds floor, he’s with her. She also has all the people on her medical team, but I’m not sure if they really count since they have to go in there with her periodically. She’s not alone, Alex.”
A sigh of relief came from Alex. He was still pissed that no one could lay with her to comfort her, but it brought him some comfort to know that she had people looking out for her constantly that weren’t involved in her medical care. “This Hayes guy - I’ve heard quite a bit about him from Yang now that I’ve talked with her. Is he as good a friend as he’s made out to be? Does the rest of the staff like him, or is it just Mer?” Alex asked. “Well… he’s well liked among the staff. But Mer really seems to like him, and he seems to reciprocate it. They were always working together before the pandemic. I found out that he was the one who found her on the ground the night she passed out and tested positive. He is - a good friend to her. They get each other, and need each other on a whole other level than most of the rest of us.” Silence. “Think they’ll get together?” Alex asked after a few moments had passed. “If she survives, I hope so.” A pang hit Maggie’s heart as she uttered the words, ‘if she survives.’ The same pang hit Alex as he heard her say it. “I have to go, Alex.” Maggie said, as she felt tears forming in her eyes the more she thought about her sister’s condition. “Alright, talk later. Bye Pierce.” End call.
-
Incoming call. Callie Torres. Miranda picked up her phone, dreading the update she’d have to give Callie on Meredith. “Hey Torres.” She said as she answered the call. “Bailey! How’s Meredith doing?” Callie said happily, expecting a good response from Bailey. “I wish I had good news for you, Callie. Her lungs have gotten substantially worse, she collapsed again, she’s sleeping more often. She updated her power of attorney and her advanced directives. She’s preparing for the worst. If I’m being honest… I’m starting to as well.” A tear ran down both Bailey and Callie’s cheeks. “Have you talked to her at all?” Bailey inquired. “No. But I probably should, shouldn’t I?” Callie asked, shuddering as she thought about how she would feel if news got any worse. This was Meredith Grey, right? Basically immortal, stronger than a bull, always willing to put up the fight. Well, except for that day where she stopped fighting in the water and almost died after drowning in Elliot’s Bay, but Callie tried not to think about that day very often. “Yeah. You should.” Bailey said, grimacing at the thought of having to call anyone and tell them that Meredith had died. She hoped she’d never have to. “Alright. Thanks Bailey. I’ll talk to you later.”
-
“She’s in a coma.” A text that Cristina Yang, Calliope Torres, Arizona Robbins, and Alex Karev, amongst many others, received 2 days after they’d been informed of Meredith’s worsening condition. The amount of tears had been shed in the past 48 hours across both past and present staff at Grey-Sloan Memorial would surprise the average person. Everyone was worried as Meredith’s life hung in the balance. When Hayes had told Cristina that she was in a coma, he thought he may have heard her cry for the first time in the now almost 3 years of knowing her. When Maggie told Alex through broken sobs, all Alex could mutter was “Damnit. Damnit. Damnit.” over and over again. All he wanted was to be able to be there with her. Callie, Arizona, and Bailey broke down in tears together over the phone. Jackson had become a shell of himself, he couldn’t bring himself to cry when he updated April about their friend’s dire situation and heard her sobs.
-
1 week. It’d been 1 week since Cormac Hayes had gotten a text from Meredith Grey, heard her voice, or seen her eyes brighten as she smiled behind her mask. He kept thinking about their last surgery. Could that have been the last surgery they’d ever perform together? And their last conversation played in his head. “This virus has got nothing on you.” He’d told her. Did he just tell her that to ease his own mind? God, there was nothing more that Cormac Hayes wanted than to hear Meredith Grey say his name again. To tell him that he looked like crap again. His mind raced as he laid in his hotel room. He was away from his boys, and his closest friend at the hospital was hanging onto life by a thread. He couldn’t just keep lying there, letting his dark and twisty thoughts take hold of him. So, he got up and drove to the hospital. And he sat with Meredith in the dead of the night. The sound of her breathing comforted him. He was in full PPE, and he held her hand, praying that she would wake up. God, he needed her to wake up.
Hour 3 of his overnight stay in Meredith’s room - that he knew he’d probably get in trouble for, but frankly didn’t care too much about getting in trouble for, if it meant Meredith wasn’t alone while she fought for her life - Cormac Hayes called Cristina Yang. It was early morning there, and Hayes figured that even if Meredith couldn’t hear, Cristina would likely want to talk to her friend. “Hey. What’s up?” Cristina said as she answered her phone. “Not much, unfortunately. I wish I had news. I’m just sitting in her room with her now.” There was a lull in conversation. “So, why’d you call me then?” Cristina asked, curious as to why she’d get a call from Hayes if there was no update. “I’ve got you on speaker. I don’t know, I was hoping that maybe hearing your voice, if she can hear at all, would help her decide to live.” Cristina snickered to herself internally. “That’s sweet. And gross.” Cristina had just woken up, which was when her sarcasm was at its peak. “Yeah, I realized that once I said it.” He hit back.
He didn’t know if it was the exhaustion hitting him, or an overwhelming sense of dread that filled the room, but Cormac admitted to Cristina, “I’m trying to be strong for her. When she was awake, everyone else around her just worried and worried and worried. She told me I was the only one who distracted her from the fact that she was sick. And I’ve been there for her sisters as best as possible, trying to be strong and distract them as I would her. But god, Yang, I’m so scared.” Cristina sighed. “I know. I am too. We just have to remember that this is Meredith. Hayes, you likely haven’t heard these stories, but she’s survived a bomb, a plane crash, a drowning, and so much more. She’s strong, and she’s going to die when she’s old, in a nursing home, and surrounded by love. She’s probably being convinced by Derek to live right now, if this time is anything like her drowning.” Cristina said, her softer side appearing, trying to convince both herself and Hayes that Meredith would be okay, eventually. “I know she’s strong. I see it every time she talks. But I still can’t help but worry. It feels too much like watching Abby slowly fade away from the cancer. She’s just too important to me, I can’t lose her. I can’t see another disease take away another woman that I…” Hayes caught himself before finishing his sentence. Unfortunately for him Cristina caught on to what he was going to say. “Love? Cormac Hayes, were you going to say that you love her?” Hayes didn’t respond, he only closed his eyes, bracing himself for the impact of whatever comment Cristina was going to make next. “Oh. My. God. You were. You were going to say love! Ha ha! Yes!” Cristina gloated and teased, since it was a good conversation deflection from the sad, sappy one that she and Hayes were previously sharing.
“Alright, place that phone next to Meredith’s ear. I’m gonna talk some sense into her. She’ll listen to me, she always does.” Hayes chuckled, moving the phone closer to Meredith’s ear. “Alright, Mer, you gotta wake up. For the love of god. I know you’re listening. You’ve got too many people that love you, waiting for you to wake up. So as much as I’m sure that you’re enjoying hanging out with Derek, Lexie, Mark, George, and all the other people you’ve lost, you have too many more people on earth that need you more than them. Dying isn’t an option.” Hayes smiled and chuckled to himself as Meredith’s twisted sister gave her a pep talk that only she could. It restored his hope that she’d pull through. About 30 minutes later, he said goodbye to Cristina, not knowing that only 2 hours later, he’d be calling her again with one of the final updates he’d ever give to her about Meredith, because Meredith would be able to begin updating Cristina on her own. She’d woken up.
He messaged Bailey, Richard, Maggie, Amelia, Teddy, Jackson, Link, and Owen in a group message as soon as her eyes fluttered open. He smiled breathlessly at her and she smiled weakly when she saw that he was in her room with her. He’d never been happier to see her smile. “Thank you, for deciding to live.” He said quietly. “Thank you for not speaking loudly.” She laughed to herself, a slight cough following. He laughed with her. His favourite thing to do. Laugh with Meredith Grey. Within 30 minutes, practically everyone knew that Meredith had woken up. There was joy in the hallways of Grey-Sloan Memorial for the first time since the pandemic started. Meredith grabbed Cormac’s hand and squeezed it as he continued to sit with her, talking to her about what she’d missed while she was out. They were glad to hear each other’s voices again.
-
“She’s awake.” Maggie and Bailey texted Callie, Arizona, and Alex. Sighs of relief erupted from all 3 former Grey-Sloan surgeons.
Meredith Grey still had a long road to recovery, but her waking up from her coma was a step in the right direction. Meredith had decided that once she was finally deemed eligible to leave the hospital and quarantine in a hotel, she wanted Cormac Hayes to stay with her. Andrew DeLuca was quite upset with this, he wanted Meredith to choose him, because he figured that he was already her doctor while she was in the hospital. However, she told him that it was only because Hayes wasn’t working on the COVID floor like Andrew was, where he was needed daily, as opposed to the peds unit, which was incredibly quiet and could be looked after by Jo. And this was all true, for the most part. But Meredith had her other reasons for asking Hayes to stay with her. Cormac, unknowing of Meredith’s true reason for asking him, of course, happily agreed. He would have agreed had he known her real reason as well. He’d been there when she’d first collapsed, then again when she needed someone to be vulnerable with, then again when she’d woken up. Now, he could be there to see her every step of the way to a full recovery and getting back to work. To him, any time he got to spend with Meredith after she woke up from her coma felt like a blessing, so he wasn’t going to pass up the offer to be with her, alone, every day, for 2 weeks straight. Meredith simply might have just casually neglected to mention that she chose him because she heard him talking to Cristina Yang the night she woke up, and heard him almost say that he loves her. Of course, she’d keep that little detail to herself til much, much later.

As much as Alex was good at pretending that he felt comfortable in his position, there were some days that he doubted himself. It wasn't often, and if he did, then he wouldn't ask for help either. It was more that he couldn't believe that after everything that he had been through in life, this is where he was. He was chief and he was trying to soak it all in but also not let it get to him either. Alex was comfortable with the way things where, and he didn't want for that to change.
This wasn't Alex giving in. He just didn't want to hear her calling him cute again and was just rolling with the idea. As long as Jo didn't say it out loud, then he was fine with it in his own way. Cute was never an adjective that people used to describe Alex. If he was being honest, he was still coming to terms with having someone that loved him and really wanted to be there. His relationship with Izzie, too much happened. Most days she was unpredictable whereas with Jo, it was easy. A nice easy, and he wanted that.
Hearing her words, Alex leaned in and gently kissed her lips. It conveyed all the feelings and emotions that he was feeling during that time and he knew that jo knew he wasn't used to hearing such things about him. "Thank you." his voice low but full of appreciation nonetheless.
Now that they had a privacy with the door being locked and the curtains drawn, Alex wanted to take full advantage of his space with Jo and celebrate in a way that only they could. Smirking, Alex took Jo against the desk, something that they had been yet to try but if he was honest, he was desperate to from the moment he walked in. Their clothes had been thrown around the room and as Alex stood up straighter, he leaned in once again and kissed her lips. "Are you okay?"
Short starter for @OfPedsProdigy:
Jo came to Seattle not know what to expect. All she knew was that she couldn’t go back to how things were with Paul and the way he was towards her. That’s why running was her best choice at this point. Not that she would ever go beck.
But when she came to Seattle; and didn’t expect to meet anyone, but Alex, he was someone she could see herself with being he understood where she came from and never once judged her. Maybe that is why she was happy to have Alex by her side. But he was doing well for himself too and and he finally had an office. One for the two of them she was being honest. Walking in and looking around with a smile on her face.
“I can’t believe they gave you an office. As if you needed a big head to begin with. But I’m proud of you. Are we going to get to celebrate or you too professional for that now?” A smirk on her safe looking at Alex all proud of everything he has accomplished.

Tumblr media
two chapters in less than twenty-four hours??? happy thanksgiving to all of our American friends!
happy birthday @choosingmywife !!! this one’s for you :)
(July 2007 cont.)
Alex had just sat down with his lunch, ready to enjoy a silent 30 minutes to himself when three trays clattered down on the table next to him. A groan left him as he looked up at Izzie, Meredith, and Cristina, all of whom were now sitting at his table and glaring at him.
“What did I do now? Did I look at my intern for three and half seconds too long,” Alex rolled his eyes as he set down his burger, looking to the women who were still glaring silently at him. “Oh come on, you guys can’t seriously be that invested in my relationship can you?” “You said your girlfriend is moving here soon, we just want to make sure you’re thinking straight is all,” Meredith shrugged as if the statement was casual, but her facial expression told a different story. “All you could talk about for the past year was Dracula and now that Wilson showed up here we haven’t heard a single thing.” Struggling to hold back his laughter, Alex looked between the three again, realizing that they were serious, “Guys come on, you can’t actually think I’m cheating on my girlfriend with a hot intern.”
“So you think she’s hot! I knew it, you guys have been way too flirty for just friends,” Izzie’s accusatory tone made Alex laugh out loud, her eyes narrowing in his direction. “You think this is funny? Do you really wanna throw away a perfectly good relationship for some on call room hookup?”
“No because I’m not,” Alex stood up, grabbing his tray and turning to leave his friends. If he were honest, he was getting kind of annoyed with their prying and prodding into his relationship with Jo. “Keep your noses out of my business, I’m a grown up and I can handle myself.”
Izzie, Meredith, and Cristina watched Alex leave the cafeteria, anger clearly visible on his face. Once he was out of earshot, Cristina spoke up, “He can’t be that angry over nothing, he’s gotta be hiding something to be that upset that we talked to him.” “Talked to who?” All three sets of eyes turned to Jo, who was now standing next to their table. She’d overheard the tail end of Alex’s conversation with the women and decided to do some investigating of her own. She knew that the constant questions from his friends were bothering Alex, but he wasn’t going to say anything to her about it.
“Hairball, come sit with us,” Cristina’s voice took on an unusually peppy tone as she smiled up at Jo. “Tell us, how are you liking being on Evil Spawn’s service? Is he… nice to his interns?” “He’s okay, not the douchebag that people make him out to be,” Jo shrugged as she sat in the seat Alex had just vacated, popping a fry into her mouth. “He’s a very… hands on teacher.”
The look that spread across Cristina, Meredith, and Izzie’s faces was priceless. It took everything for Jo not to laugh at them, instead she waited for Meredith to speak, “Interesting… he’s seemed distracted lately, his girlfriend was in town last week.”
“Wait. He has a girlfriend?” Jo asked, pretending to be surprised by the information. “I did see a little something on the side of his neck. Was it a hickey?”
The shocked expressions turned to confusion as Izzie prodded more, “Hmm yeah that’s why we call her Dracula. They’re very committed to each other. It’s kind of disgusting how much he talks about her actually.” She said, having another bite of her lunch.
“Dracula? Huh, makes me wonder why he never mentioned her,” Jo’s pager went off, making her stand from the table in a rush. “I have to go. Hope we can finish this conversation with you some other time” she said before leaving.
“He didn’t say anything about his girlfriend to her?” Meredith opened her eyes in shock. “He always talks about his girlfriend to anyone who’s willing to listen.”
“Was that Karev’s intern right there?” a voice behind them said, making the three women turn around to find Bailey standing there holding a tray.
“Yeah. Wilson. She’s on his service,” Izzie explained, grabbing another fry and putting it in her mouth. She didn’t have to talk if her mouth was full. Bailey sat down, joining them.
“That man has been acting too suspicious for my liking when someone mentions that girl,” their mentor said, shaking her head. “I don’t like it.”
“Right? I saw the two of them practically walk into an on call room together. Tried to get in, he would not let me through the door,” Cristina said.
“That can’t be good. Especially now. I bet his girlfriend is moving here just because of him, and he’s just messing around with that girl? Now? When he is this close to having a normal life with his girl again?” Bailey put her fingers together in exaggeration. “You three better keep a close eye on him. Men are stupid. Make sure he is still using his brain to think and not other body parts. If you know what I mean…” she raised her eyebrows, making the trio laugh at her expression.
“I’m serious,” Bailey narrowed her eyes at the women. “Karev is a couple drinks away from making a very serious mistake… his poor girlfriend isn’t even here to defend herself or see what’s going on. So as women who support other women, it’s our job to make sure that he doesn’t do something that will hurt his girlfriend.”

Two days later, Jo had finally had enough. She’d been standing at the fourth floor nurses’ station updating some of Alex’s charts when she saw him walking out to the waiting area with Dr. Torres to update a patient’s family. From her spot behind the desk, she stared at him longingly for a few moments. He really looked great in his scrubs, and it took everything within her not to want to pull him into the nearby conference room.
She had been watching for a few minutes when someone came up behind her and breathed into her ear, “Don’t waste your time on him, hairball.”
Jo turned to see Cristina Yang standing there with an unimpressed look on her face, “I’m serious. Alex doesn’t date. He doesn’t sleep around. He’s got a girlfriend who’s moving here very soon. So, don’t waste your time trying to get into his pants because it’s not going to happen.”
Jo huffed in annoyance. His friend’s concern was nice and all for the first couple weeks, but now it was just getting old. She wanted to be able to look at her boyfriend without someone accusing her of trying to get him to cheat on his girlfriend. Jo looked around and realized that everyone seemed to be watching her exchange with Yang. Stevens and Grey were whispering to each other in the background, Bailey stared at the two of them with wide eyes, O’Malley and Sloan gave the pair sideways glances, and Lexie was trying her best not to laugh.
Seeing that he was walking in her direction, Jo stood up from behind the desk and mumbled to herself, “Oh, screw it.”
Jo rounded the desk and stood in front of Alex, who smiled at her, “Wilson, what can I do for you?”
“Just one thing,” Jo wrapped her arms around Alex and pulled him down into a kiss. She heard the gasps around them as she kissed Alex and couldn’t help but grin mischievously.
When they pulled apart, Alex looked at her with raised eyebrows, “Oh, so we’re doing this now?”
“I got tired of hiding it,” Jo shrugged. She looked around at the shocked expressions of everyone surrounding them, watching in anticipation for Alex’s reaction. “I want to be able to kiss you when I want to kiss you.”
Alex’s face broke out into a large grin. He scanned the room and decided to hell with the secrecy. He could care less what people had to say about him. All that mattered was that she was here and willing to come clean. That’s why he had no qualms about bending down and kissing her back, sending the spectators in a frenzy.
When they finally separated, Alex let a chuckle out, leaning down to whisper in her ear, “This was unbelievably hot and if we weren’t in public I’d do so much more than kiss you. So just so you know, I’m gonna have some fun with you tonight.”
Staring up at him coyly, Jo responded, “Can’t wait.”
Walking away, Jo sent a satisfied smirk in Cristina’s direction. As soon as she was out of sight, Izzie, Cristina, and Meredith practically jumped on Alex, all talking at once.
“What in the hell is wrong with you?!”
“In the middle of the hallway? Have some self respect.”
“Oh I knew you were up to something stupid.”
“Calm down,” Alex rolled his eyes.
“Calm down! Calm down? You want us to be calm after what we just witnessed?” Izzie glared at him angrily.
“Yes.”
“Don’t be an ass,” Meredith said, pushing against his chest lightly. She grabbed a hold of his scrub top. “Look, we all have to get back to work but this conversation is not over. You are coming over to the house tonight and we are going to talk about this, or so help me God, Alex I swear I will fly to Boston and tell your girlfriend of your stupidity myself.”
“Whatever, fine. I’ll be there,” Alex pulled her hands away from his shirt and smoothed it down. “Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to check on my patient in post-op.”
***
The rest of the day was… interesting, to say the least. News of Jo and Alex kissing spread through the hospital like wildfire. Everywhere they went, someone would send a look of disapproval their way. Jo felt like a pariah, like she had a scarlet letter attached to her scrub top. Alex kept getting glares and looks of disdain anytime he’d pass by hospital staff.
By the time Alex climbed in the car, all he wanted to do was go home and take a shower. Instead, he’d have to explain to his girlfriend that they would be stopping by Meredith’s house for what could only be described as an intervention.
Jo entered the car about three minutes after he did, “Hey.”
“Hey,” Alex gave her a small smile. “So… my friends want to kill me. Thanks for that.”
“I’m sorry. I know I probably shouldn’t have done that the way I did it, but I meant what I said. I’m tired of hiding, Alex. I want people to know that we’re together and we’re in love. I don’t want to worry about entering and exiting the hospital separately so that no one knows. And, I’m really tired of hearing the interns say how hot you are.”
Alex chuckled, “I’m tired of it, too. My friends are right. I can’t go more than twenty minutes without talking about you or thinking about you. I want them to know you, and I mean really know you. You deserve to be shown off, not hidden away like you’re some dirty little secret that I’m ashamed of.”
“So, now what?” Jo asked.
“Now, we are going to Mer’s house because she has put together a group of people that are going to chew me out because I cheated on my girlfriend, blah, blah, blah,” Alex began to pull out of the parking lot. “Except, they are going to get the surprise of their lives when you show up with me and I tell them that it’s been you all along.”
“You know, I don’t think I’m going to stop them from beating you up when you tell them,” Jo chuckled, her fingers moving to caress Alex’s thigh. “But promise we’ll be quick, I really wanna go home and jump into bed with you.”
The drive to Meredith’s was short, Alex and Jo both climbing out of the car and hesitantly stood on the porch together. It took him a minute to gather up the courage, but he finally rang the doorbell, grimacing at Meredith’s angry expression when she saw Jo.
“Before you flip your lid will you just let us in,” Alex pushed Jo in front of him, looking at Meredith pointedly as he did so. “I’m not going in unless she does.”
“Fine, but I’m voicing my displeasure about Wilson being here,” Meredith sent one last glare towards the couple before allowing them to walk inside.
Spread across the living room were Cristina, Izzie, George, Callie, and even Bailey who all began to loudly complain at the sight of Alex and Jo standing next to each other. Meredith quieted them down, rolling her eyes as she sat next to Cristina, “He wouldn’t come in without her, trust me I tried.”
“No offense Hairball, but we’re kind of having this meeting because of you,” Cristina glared at Jo, crossing her arms across her chest. “That doesn’t give you an invite.”
“Will you guys settle down, you’re being insufferable,” Alex took a deep breath, looking to Jo before quickly turning back to his friends. “I love that you guys are concerned about me and that you’re worried about my relationship, but you have nothing to worry about. My girlfriend already moved to Seattle, a few weeks ago actually.”
“That doesn’t make anything better. In fact that makes it worse,” Izzie exclaimed as she gestured to Jo. “You’re screwing an intern while your girlfriend is waiting at home for you! Alex what the hell?”
Ignoring Izzie’s outburst, Alex slung his arm around Jo’s shoulder with a crooked grin, “Guys, I’d like you to meet my girlfriend Jo. You know the one I’ve been dating for three and a half years? This is her.”
All six people stare gape mouthed at Alex and Jo, both of whom were grinning widely. Jo leaned over to Alex, dramatically whispering to him, “I think you stunned them, maybe tell them again so they understand what’s happening.”
“No no, I heard you loud and clear,” Bailey looked between the two, shaking her head as if she’s trying to get the thought to settle into her mind. “I just can’t believe that Karev would date someone so… normal.”
The living room erupts into chaos then, a mix of profanities, disbelief, and countless questions flying through the air as Jo and Alex stood unfazed by the happenings around them. More than anything, the two were excited to not have to sneak around anymore.
“Hold on, how the hell did this happen? How did we not figure this out,” Izzie let an exasperated sigh out as she leaned her head against the back of the couch. “This is insane!”
“I told you guys, I met Jo in med school. Actually Lexie introduced us,” Alex looked to Meredith, who wore an angry expression as she stared him down. “I didn’t know she was your sister until about 24 hours before you did, don’t look at me like that.” Cristina looked between the two with a bewildered expression, her eyes trained on Jo, “I still don’t understand how the hell you decided to date Alex of all people. Were there no other male suitors? Is this Stockholm Syndrome? I need answers.”
“Well he slept with all of my friends first, then we got closer and I realized he wasn’t a total douchebag,” Jo blushed, leaning her head against Alex’s shoulder. “And then we went to visit his family for Christmas one year and things just… kinda fell into place.”
“Well as horrifying as that is, it still doesn’t explain why you didn’t tell any of us that your girlfriend was an intern,” Callie pointed out. “She’s a badass on her own, she doesn’t need your reputation to help her Karev.”
“I know that, but I wanted you all to figure that out on your own without seeing her as just my girlfriend,” Alex grinned, excited that his friends saw just as much promise in Jo as he did. “And now that you have, I can show her off like I’ve wanted to for the past three weeks.”
“You know what the most ridiculous part of this is,” Meredith gestured to Jo, a smirk on her face. “Wilson’s the one that’s been giving Alex those insane hickeys! She looks so innocent.”
“Listen I would love to stand here and be mocked by you guys for longer, but my girlfriend will kill me if I don’t get her home soon,” Alex waved to his friends as he pulled Jo out of the room, both of them running out the door in a fit of laughter like excited teenagers. “Well… that was fun.”
“Yup and I’m gonna leave a huge hickey on your neck tonight,” Jo smiled as she pulled Alex down into a kiss. “Just cause I can.”

Grey’s Anatomy: Alex Karev - Type 8w9
Tumblr media
Alex is blunt, sensitive and honest. He has built up a persona of being mean and brash to cope with his difficult upbringing and the challenges that he faced.
At his best, Alex shows his more vulnerable and emotional side. He is very empathetic towards some of his patients and truly wants to help them. We see the care that he takes in the speciality of paediatrics as he wants to protect and care for the patients. He is very protective of his friends and family and is always there for Meredith even becoming her confidant after Cristina leaves. He also becomes less impulsive and aggressive as he matures but still fights to protect his loved ones.
At his worst, Alex can become cruel and pushes the people he loves away. He is emotionally detaches and keeps to himself, however, if he is approached he will lash out and show his rage. This can be seen when Izzie leaves him and he is trying to cope with her departure. He also lashes out at Andrew and becomes violent when he believes he is with Jo. Alex will say and do hurtful things when he feels like he is hurt or used by another person and claims that he is staying honest to himself.
Alex is very protective of the people he loves and takes a strong stance against what he perceives as injustices. He thinks it’s his job to stand up against bullies and to defend the weak. As a child, he experienced bullying and now takes a strong stance against it. This can be seen with how he will fight for his patients’ rights and becomes their advocate. He will do this with his younger patients and is especially concerned about the people in their life. He will sometimes jump to conclusions and can be brash with parents when he believes they may be neglectful or abusive to their children. He can still be a bit abrasive and bully others based on his feelings and perceptions towards them.
Tumblr media
Alex had a very difficult childhood after his father abandoned him and his mother was unwell. As a result, he took it upon himself to become the ‘man of the house’ and started acting as the caregiver for his mother. He felt like he had a lot of tough circumstances to deal with but it was his job to look after his mother and family. The responsibilities that he took on led to his feelings of resentment towards his father and wanting to escape his past.
Alex finds it difficult sharing his feelings and being vulnerable. However, when he genuinely forms a connection with someone his softer side is more evident. He cares deeply for both Izzie and later Jo and within his relationships with them is more sensitive and tender. He has a tough exterior and tries to mask his insecurities but in these relationships he finally feels able to share his emotions. He is able to shed his fear of being dependent on someone else and shares his life completely.
Alex has a wing 9 as he is more introverted and closed off than a wing 7 may be.
Tri-type: 8w9 - 6w7 - 2w3
Some quotes to describe Alex’s motivations:
“Doesn’t matter how tough we are. Trauma always leaves a scar. It follows us home. It changes our lives. Trauma messes everybody up but maybe that’s the point. All the pain and the fear and the crap, maybe going through all that is what keeps us moving forward. It’s what pushes us. Maybe we have to get a little messed up before we can step up”
“You just don’t give up. It’s lame. You’re not a quitter. That’s not who you are”
“You can have the worst crap in the world happen to you and you can get it over it. All you gotta do is survive”
“Some of us have to overcome more than others.”
“Don’t analyze everything. Just do it.”
“It’s your life, nobody can make you do anything you don’t want to do”
“I can't lose you, I won't survive and that's your fault. You made me love you, you made me let you in."
“Maybe I'm a pig. Maybe I'm an ass. Maybe I'm a vermin like everybody says, but I tell the truth. It's the one thing I got going for me.”
“Who do you think took care of her? Kept track of her? Got her committed so she wouldn’t hurt herself? Who do you think took care of your kids? Your best was worthless. I was the dad. I was the kid, but I was the dad. You were nothing. You were gone. You’re worthless.”
“I know, ok? I'm being an ass. I can't help it. I'm pissed off all the time, so much I can't even breathe."
“When people reach out a hand, you don’t bite it. Trust me, I did it for years, and the only thing it accomplishes is that people stop reaching out.”
