Just realised that one half of both of my greys otps (japril & izzex) got married on the same day, and both of those marriages ended in shambles (as they should have), only for them to go back to their exes that they should've been with all along 🤭
#ak2 you will always be an iconic duo#it's nice to be one of god's favourite fangirls#japril#izzex#greys anatomy

You have no idea how thrilled i am to find the other person in the universe who loves Izzex! What do you see as their biggest differences and most important similarities? And what would you choose as your five favorite izzex scenes?!
I am not exaggerating when I say izzex changed my brain chemistry in a pivotal way.
I think their resilience is what connects them most. It always kind of made me crazy that these two people who worked so hard to overcome the challenges of immature parents and trauma are held to these inaccessible moral standards. (And it also made me crazy that they would sometimes hold each OTHER to impossible standards!) Yes, they were never perfect, and yes, they backslid at times, but they were always trying to move forward. I don't want perfect characters! I want relatable characters who grow and change! I also love that they both came from worlds where they weren't expected to succeed, and they they not only succeeded, they thrived!
Their biggest difference, imo, is how they perceive being vulnerable. Alex's vulnerability is so associated with shame, it's lucky he manages to connect with anyone! Whereas I think Izzie appreciates vulnerability, especially in Alex.
As for my five favorite scenes, it's so hard for me to pick. I really think Katie and Justin were some of the best scene partners in the early series. But here's my top 5 for today:
1) The scene in the tunnels where they are speaking about themselves in the third person. I love when we get to see that connection of friendship and when Izzie brings out Alex's goofy side.
2) THEIR FIRST KISS. Surely no explanation required there.
3) The scene where Alex brings her the banana and her meds during her first surgery after her medical leave. Izzie Stevens deserved nothing less than a hot man taking care of her every need.
4) The "I care about you" scene. The TENSION and the fury and the attraction radiating off of Alex while Izzie challenges him!
5) This is a cop out because it's a cut scene, but the scene in Derek's trailer when she says, "I'm not going to die in your arms. Maybe someday, but not today" and Alex takes the scarf off her head. I MEAN 😍
Thank you so much for the lovely ask!!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
A few hours later, they had Izzie settled in a room as a transfer to any other hospital was unavailable until tomorrow. Amelia had come over to see them and take new scans. From the look on her face, she had no good news for him.
“As you can see from the scans, the tumor in the temporal lobe had grown down and is now invading the epithalamus and thalamus. This is what's causing the dizziness and the fainting spells. At this point as the tumor grows, it will only get worse until eventually you will have blackouts and seizures. There's a few drugs we can try to stop the progression and ease some of the symptoms, but I would recommend surgery…”
“No,” Izzie cut her off, her voice rising into a shout. “We already did the surgery, Shepard. I can't fight it anymore.”
“I haven't done surgery on you,” Amelia asked looking over at him, confused.
“She’s talking about the surgery Derek did on her brain tumor back in 2009,” Alex whispered to her as Amelia sighed, but nodded.
“Okay, I can at least give you something to help ease the symptoms. I've looked over your medication list and I know a few things we can add that will slow the progression. I’d also like to keep her overnight to keep an eye on her. I know neither of you want to be here but I'll try, so I'll try to make it as comfortable as possible,” Amelia said with a tight smile looking over Alex and Izzie.
“Thank you,” Alex said with a nod.
“Of course” Amelia just nodded, looking down. “I just wish there was something I could do.”
“I really appreciate it regardless,” Alex said looking over Amelia as her smile turned to one of genuine kindness.
She nodded toward the door, and they both stepped into the hallway. Once he closed the door behind him, Amelia immediately wrapped him up in a tight hug. It had been a long time since Alex had been hugged this intently by anyone. Amelia had always been the second closest sister to him. When no one else was on his side, and Amelia was arguing with Meredith, the two of them always had each other. Even after everything he'd done, it was nice to know he still had a little bit of family left.
“Is it true that you’re back in town?” Amelia said with a smile as she pulled away.
“Yeah, we've got a little place closer to Lake Washington and Robbie lives there too,” Alex said with a smile of his own.
“So, are you guys going to stay here after Izzie…?” Amelia asked, her smile growing as She raised an eyebrow at him.
“Yeah, but I won't come back to work here,” Alex said, knowing that there was her next question. “As much as I love it here, I won't do that to Jo.”
"You know you could've called," Amelia said softly, punching his shoulder lightly, but with enough force to sting.
“I'm sorry,” Alex said rubbing the area
“I'm just glad you're back though. I hope I get to see more of you, if you don't disappear on us again.”
“I promise I won't.”
“Good, have you talked to Meredith or seen her yet?”
“No, not yet.”
“Alright, I'll send her your way and give her a warning about Izzie as well.”
“Thank you, Amelia, for everything,”
“Of course, that's what family is for,” Amelia said with a smile, she seemed to hesitate, but reached up to hug him again before she turned to leave. Although she turned back to glance at him, probably to check that he wasn't going to run away. Alex didn't blame her for that.
Before he could go back into the room Alex looked around and saw a pair of pink scrubs headed towards him. He looked Jo up and down as she held her swollen belly and waddled towards him. It was a slow pace and she avoided his eyes as she stared down at the papers in her hands, no doubt, the urinalysis results.
Alex waited for her to approach him. His heart fluttered in his chest and he felt a familiar twinge of anxiety curl up in his stomach. He wanted to run but his feet didn't dare move. Yet a moment later she was standing before him. Jo looked up and held up the papers in front of her stomach. She didn't speak, just stared at him, then she cleared her throat and looked down again.
“I have Izzie's pregnancy test results and saw her brain scans,” Jo said, still looking down as Alex could only nod. “Is there anything that Amelia can do?”
Jo looked up at him with a little bit of desperation in her eyes, but Alex just shook his head and her face fell. “It's too far along. We knew that two years ago. Our goal was only to slow it down, we did and it gave us two more years with her, but now…”
“I’m sorry, Alex,” Jo whispered to him as he felt his heart skip a bead and it took him a moment to respond.
“I'm pretty sure that I should be the one saying that to you,” Alex finally said, looking down and not bearing to see the look on her face.
“Yeah,” Jo trailed off, and he could feel her eyes on his. “But is this the real reason why you left?”
Alex could only nod and take a deep breath as he finally looked back up at her. “By the time I got there, Izzie’s cancer had progressed to the point where it was hard for her to keep up with her work and to take care of the twins. I took over everything for her. I cooked, I cleaned, I took care of her and I became a father to the twins. I was working from dawn to dusk and I was up in the middle of the night when Izzie would get up thinking it was the wrong time of day or when Eli would have a nightmare or Alexis couldn't sleep because she thought her mom would die in the middle of the night. A week turned into two weeks and then into a month and then I still haven't figured it all out and I had no idea how I was going to even take the time to call you about all of this.”
Alex trailed off as he looked over at her, she stared back at him. This time she didn’t take her eyes off of him. She stared into his soul in a way that only she could. He got caught up in her honey brown eyes. Something he used to love, and somehow he had longed to do again. Now he wanted to savor this moment as it was probably the last one they would have together.
Alex fumbled over his words as he didn’t dare look away from her. “I had to take care of the twins. I had to give them some sense of normalcy and give them one parent that they can rely on.”
Jo nodded, although she didn’t seem satisfied with his words. She put a hand on her belly and rubbed up and down. Alex looked down at her bump. He wondered if she was carrying a boy or a girl. If she had decorated a nursery, or if she just had a hamper full of clothes and a bassinet. He knew her and knew that it was probably a mix of the two.
“Why didn't you tell me all of this,” Jo let out a breath bringing him back to her. Her voice was a little bit of desperation and a little bit of frustration mixed together.
Alex looked down, ashamed of what he had done. “You were my first thought…. But then it all just happened so quickly. By the time I got your voicemail I, I panicked. I had to take on so much so soon and I didn't want you to bear this burden when it was my alone.”
Jo shook her head as she crossed her arms. “Alex, in all the years we were together, have you ever faced anything without me by your side? I was always there for you, to support you and love you. I would have, I would have…”
Breathing out, tears collecting in her eyes, Jo quickly wiped them away. He thought he should say something or comfort her, but she just continued.
“I would have loved your kids, I do love your kids. I talked to them downstairs, and they're just the sweetest little things. Hell, I would have helped you take care of Izzie. I would have moved to freaking Kansas to be with you!”
Their argument caught the attention of all the nurses and other staff. They eavesdropped into their conversation with glances at them, trying to appear busy and failing. No doubt everyone had been waiting for this moment to play out.
“I know,” Alex said, wishing he could reach out to touch her but knowing it wasn't the place to do so.
“Why didn't you let me?”
Alex just shook his head. “I thought I was doing what was best for everybody.”
“That should have been my decision to make,” Jo said as she took a step back. He knew she wanted to run, but then she remembered the papers in her hands and looked down at them.
“I was so overwhelmed Jo, I didn't sleep, I didn't eat, I wasn't thinking straight! I knew that if I brought you into this, you would be as stressed and as overwhelmed as I was. I thought I'd lose you too. So I let you go. I thought you would move on and get married again and have a family and you did! You have everything you’ve ever wanted and I'm, I’m so happy for you, Jo. I love you enough to be incredibly happy for you.”
Alex tried to smile, but all he could manage was to turn up the corners of his lips. He could barely hold back the tears in his eyes. From the look on Jo's face, she was doing the same. She looked up and a few of them fell on her cheeks, but she quickly wiped them away.
“Izzie is not pregnant,” Jo said, standing by his side as she handed him the papers. “Although her electrolyte levels are low, so I’ll have the nurses come by with some extra vitamins and fluids.”
“Thank you,” Alex said with a nod, the two of them stared at each other, but not truly saying the other person in front of them.
He didn’t want to part with her, but she seemed eager to leave. Jo took a step back before turning to leave. Watching her go, he wondered if this was the last time he would see her. Suddenly, Jo bent over, holding her stomach and letting out a grunt. Alex raced to her side, putting a hand on her back and leaning over her. He suspected from the look on her face and the way she held her belly that she was in labor.
“It’s going to be okay, Jo.” Alex tried to reassure her by running his hand up and down her back just the way she liked it.
But Jo just shook her head, closing her eyes as tears spilled over onto her cheeks. She put a hand to his chest and pushed him away. “Let me go!”
Alex did as she asked but, she leaned heavily on the wall and braced herself on the railing. He wished she would let him help her, but he knew it wasn't his place anymore. The pain must have finally passed, as she stood up, and Alex watched her.
“Are you okay?” Alex asked, knowing he wouldn't believe the answer she gave him.
“I'm fine,” Jo said before bending over in pain again, this time crying out. It went again against every instinct inside of him to not reach out and hold her.
“Should I get Carina or Meredith or…”
He wasn't sure if he should call Jack, he didn't even know his number.
"No, I'm fine, just..."
Jo gasped before and looked down at her pants, Alex looked down too, to see a wet spot growing as the water trickled down her legs.
"No, no," Jo said, holding her belly. "It's too early, they're not due for another week," she breathed out.
"It's twins, they come early."
"I know that," Jo snapped at him, gritting her teeth.
Alex looked up as one of the nurses came running over. “Dr. Wilson, what is it?”
“Dr. Wilson is in labor. Get me a wheelchair and page Carina DeLuca." Alex reached out his hand to her, offering it, but Jo just shook her head and instead turned to lean on the nurse who offered her their help.
He followed, but Jo stopped and turned around, putting a hand up, forcing him to stop. “Don't, Alex, just go back to Izzie.”
“Jo,” Alex breathed out. He wanted so desperately to go with her, but he knew it wasn't his place, although he wished it could be.
“Is there anything I can get you, Dr. Wilson?” the nurse asked, helping her along.
“Jack, I want Jack,” Jo breathed out, desperate for him, and she squeezed her eyes shut, tears falling from her cheeks again. “Can someone please get him? He's down at the daycare with Luna.”
Alex swallowed the lump in his throat. Hearing Jo call out for someone other than him. The man she loved now. The father of her children. It was the final straw. He knew she was closed off to him completely and that she had truly moved on.
“Just take care of her, please,” Alex said, knowing Jack would be the one to comfort her now.
“Don't worry, Dr. Karev, I've got it,” Jo snapped at him.
Alex swallowed the lump in his throat again, staring at them. He watched as a few nurses came to help them, one bringing a wheelchair. They helped Jo into it, and she didn't protest as she sat down. They quickly wheeled her away, and Alex watched until she disappeared around the corner, knowing he would never see her again.
He looked down at the results in his hand. Izzie was supposed to be his focus now, although his mind could only think of Jo. Alex reluctantly turned back and went into Izzie's room, vowing to take care of her and the kids now. He decided to call Susan and have her bring the twins up to Izzie’s room. They deserved his full attention now too.
