"And you make me want to be better. You make me want to be good. And I think I can. With you, I think I can. So I'm not going anywhere, and you can stop hiding. And if you want to be scared, that's okay. Just be scared with me."

For all you Izzex stans out there, did we watch the same show?

You have no idea how thrilled i am to find the other person in the universe who loves Izzex! What do you see as their biggest differences and most important similarities? And what would you choose as your five favorite izzex scenes?!
I am not exaggerating when I say izzex changed my brain chemistry in a pivotal way.
I think their resilience is what connects them most. It always kind of made me crazy that these two people who worked so hard to overcome the challenges of immature parents and trauma are held to these inaccessible moral standards. (And it also made me crazy that they would sometimes hold each OTHER to impossible standards!) Yes, they were never perfect, and yes, they backslid at times, but they were always trying to move forward. I don't want perfect characters! I want relatable characters who grow and change! I also love that they both came from worlds where they weren't expected to succeed, and they they not only succeeded, they thrived!
Their biggest difference, imo, is how they perceive being vulnerable. Alex's vulnerability is so associated with shame, it's lucky he manages to connect with anyone! Whereas I think Izzie appreciates vulnerability, especially in Alex.
As for my five favorite scenes, it's so hard for me to pick. I really think Katie and Justin were some of the best scene partners in the early series. But here's my top 5 for today:
1) The scene in the tunnels where they are speaking about themselves in the third person. I love when we get to see that connection of friendship and when Izzie brings out Alex's goofy side.
2) THEIR FIRST KISS. Surely no explanation required there.
3) The scene where Alex brings her the banana and her meds during her first surgery after her medical leave. Izzie Stevens deserved nothing less than a hot man taking care of her every need.
4) The "I care about you" scene. The TENSION and the fury and the attraction radiating off of Alex while Izzie challenges him!
5) This is a cop out because it's a cut scene, but the scene in Derek's trailer when she says, "I'm not going to die in your arms. Maybe someday, but not today" and Alex takes the scarf off her head. I MEAN 😍
Thank you so much for the lovely ask!!

@thejolexgroupchat: Yes, I got your letter, Yes, I'm doing better, I know that it's over, I don't need your closure.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Alex paced back and forth as he waited for the EMTs to come to the house. Alexis and Eli were standing next to him worrying about their mom. Although Izzie was in bright spirits as she stared up at them trying to reassure the kids with a smile. She was laying on the couch in their brownstone overlooking Lake Washington. They had chosen the more eastern Seattle neighborhood for its close proximity to Seattle Pres. And far away from not Grey-Sloan and the waterfront neighborhood where they might accidentally run into someone they knew.
“I'm fine Alex, it was just fall, it's probably just the heat,” Izzie said, putting a hand to her head where he had placed a cold washcloth across her forehead.
“Mommy do you want an ice cream,” Eli asked, holding Izzie's hand and giving it a squeeze.
“Not right now baby but why don't you and Alexis go get some?” Izzie said, giving them a too bright smile.
“Can we Daddy?” Alexis asked, tugging on his hand.
“Yeah, go get whatever you want from the freezer,” Alex gave her forced smile before she ran off.
Eli hung around before Izzie gave his hand a squeeze. “Go on baby, get some chocolate ice cream from Mommy and I'll be okay. Daddy's going to take good care of me.”
“Okay Mommy,” Eli said before leaning down to place a kiss on her forehead, then he ran off to join Alexis for ice cream.
It was only then that Izzie's smile fell and she put a hand to her head. She was weak and he knew it. She doesn't hide it around him.
“Izzie…”
“I know,” Izzie said with a shake of her head. “I just don't want the twins to see me like this.”
“But that's why I'm here,” Alex said with a sigh. “So that I can take care of them and you.”
“I don't need you to take care of me,” Izzie said, raising her voice despite what she said earlier to Eli.
“Mommy?” Eli asked, his voice coming from the other room.
“I'm okay, buddy, just get your ice cream!” Izzie called back in a happier tone but she still glared at him.
“Yes, you do because who else is gonna do it, Iz?” Alex asked, with a sigh, knowing there was no one else.
He didn't know why Izzie fought him on this. Alex came to Kansas for her and the twins. He gave up everything for her. It was something he was starting to resent her for and he had the feeling that Izzie was starting to sense that in him. He gave up everything for her, for their kids, he gave up his home, his career, the love of his life for her. Although, he was the one who had made the decision to leave it all. But she was the one who kept his kids from him. And she was the one dying alone of cancer, someone had to take care of her.
“I get it, you don't want me, but none of us can take it back now,” Alex tried not to grit his teeth.
“I know,” Izzie said with a shake of her head. “You made the most selfless sacrifice in the world to take care of our twins and I have no right to ask you to stick around, but you did anyway. I didn't make that choice for you, Alex.”
“You did when you kept my kids from me,” Alex said, arguing back and clenching his fists. “You kept them from me for five more years.”
“Are we really going to have this argument again,” Izzie asked, glaring up at him.
But before he could respond, they heard the knock on the door, “Daddy the police are here.”
“Thanks, Alexis,” Alex said as he went over to the door opening it up, but he was surprised to see the faces of Station 19 as they came in.
Although Alex was lucky that he didn't recognize anyone or vice versa. Or that Ben Warren wasn’t there either.
“She's in here,” Alex said, going to where Izzie was laying on the couch. “She fainted twenty minutes ago and has been light-headed all day. Her blood pressure is low….”
“And I'm dying of cancer,” Izzie said, looking up at them and pulling off the scarf on her head before putting it on the side table. “That's why I fainted.”
“Her doctor is at Seattle Pres,” Alex said looking over at a tall and lean, black woman with long box braids. “Can you take us there instead of Grey-Slone?”
“I wish we could, but they're close to trauma due to flooding,” a tall tan EMT with brown hair and a short brown beard told them, before he kneeled down next to Izzie.
Alex looked over to see the twins still standing in the entryway. Eli clung to the doorway, but Alexis stood tall trying to be brave. They were holding hands, their knuckles white, betraying their fear. Alex waved them over, but Eli just shook his head and Alexis, seeing her brother’s response, opted to stay next to him.
One of the other EMTs, a brown-haired guy with a thin stubble of a beard, put on a pair of blue gloves as he sat on the coffee table next to Izzie. “Hi my name is Jack, now I know you have cancer, but is there any other reason you could have fainted? Could you be pregnant at all?”
“Ignore him,” one of the other EMTs that Alex recognized as Andy Herrera said. “His girlfriend is an OB and she’s pregnant so he wants to use any excuse to see her.”
“Sorry,” Jack said looking down with a little blush of embarrassment.
“No it's okay, I suppose there is a chance I could be pregnant,” Izzie said, with a real smile.
“Izzie,” Alex said in a warning knowing that wasn’t true, but Izzie just glared back at him
“Thank you,” Jack said, with a beaming smile.
“So it looks like your BP is low and your heartbeat isn’t as steady as I’d like it, so let's get you to the hospital where the doctors can figure out why you fainted,” Herrera said as they got ready to load Izzie onto the stretcher.
“I should stay here and watch the twins,” Alex said, looking over at them waiting on the porch.
“If I have to go to the hospital you have to come with me, that's the deal,” Izzie said, setting him with a look. “Susan can watch the twins, she's already here.”
Their neighbor, an older, black haired woman with two teenagers of her own, had come out seeing all the commotion and looked at them with a sad smile. “Don't worry Dr. Karev, I will take care of the twins.”
Eli and Alexis had followed them out and now hung onto Susan as they watched them put Izzie in the ambulance.
“Don't worry my babies, Mommy will be okay,” Izzie said as she blew them a kiss. Each of them blew her a kiss back.
Alex reluctantly got into the back of the rig, and sat next to Jack. He wondered if he should call or text Meredith and let her know they were coming in. They had gotten back in touch when they moved back to Seattle a few months after Izzie’s cancer got worse. Meredith was happy to see them again, but angry at the way he left. She was also the only one who knew they were in Seattle.
“How far along is your girlfriend?” Izzie said, making small talk as they rode to the hospital.
“She's 36 weeks pregnant with twin boys. I keep begging her to take maternity leave but she refuses,” Jack said, with a shake of his head.
“What's her name?”
“Her name is Josie.”
“Josie, she sounds sweet. I had our twins at 37 weeks and I was happy to take maternity leave at 30 weeks. My entire body ached.”
“She often complains about the same feeling when she gets home from work.”
“So you live together and have a baby. How come you’re not married?” Izzie asked with a sneaky smile.
“Izzie,” Alex sighed, but she ignored him. “We're not married either.”
“Not for lack of trying,” Izzie said, looking back at him with a glare.
“You sound like my Josie. After she told me she was pregnant, I proposed to her, but she refused to marry me. She says she loves me and she wants to be with me always, but she won't let me put a ring on her finger.” Jack said with a shake of his head. “But I get it, she's been married before and as soon as they got married things changed and they got divorced soon after so now she thinks it's bad luck.”
Soon enough they pulled up to Grey-Sloan. Alex dreaded every second of it, especially as the ambulance doors opened. They were greeted with Owen and Schmidt as they met the rig. Alex was lucky enough to be able to hide from them for a moment as they focused on Izzie, listing off her stats as they brought her in. When Alex got down from the rig, Owen did a double take before his eyes widened.
“What are you doing here?” Owen asked, but Alex just looked at Izzie and Owen went quiet.
“He's taking care of his girlfriend,” Hererra said, looking between the two of them confused.
“Jack, why don't you go find Josie,” Owen said, giving him a pat on his arm and trying to send him away.
“You don't have to tell me twice,” Jack said with a smile as he started walking off.
The rest of the EMTs left and they wheeled Izzie into the trauma room as her eyes followed Jack. “Oh but I wanted to meet his girlfriend, she’s an OB. I could be pregnant.”
Schmidt and Owen exchanged a look, their eyes going wide before Owen turned to yell at the intern. “Intercept the person coming down from OB and go get Dr. DeLuca-Bishop.”
“Why?” the intern asked, confused as his eyebrows rose.
“Just do it,” Schmidt yelled as Alex looked at the resident, surprised at his change in strength. “And get Dr. Grey for a general consultation too instead of whoever's coming!”
“We're just here because it's the closest hospital, but can we get a transfer if possible? Izzie's doctors are a Seattle Pres.”
“We'll take a quick look at her and then see if we can get her transferred,” Owen said with a short nod as he began his exam.
“Oh is that Josie?” Izzie asked, pointing to a woman in pink scrubs as she walked past the windows of the trauma room.
As Alex looked up and instantly recognized her. Despite the pink scrubs, her blonde highlighted hair, and her extremely swollen belly. Alex knew it was Jo. He watched her walk over to Jack with a smile before she wrapped her arms around his neck and leaned to kiss him. Jack kissed her back with enthusiasm and passion. When he pulled back he reached down to hold her belly and she moved his hands to where the babies were probably kicking. Alex stepped out of the trauma room as he watched them.
“Jo,” Alex whispered, not meaning to say it out loud as she whipped around.
Jo stared at him, her eyes wide and her lips parted. She seemed frozen in surprise as she blinked at him. He wondered if she was thinking he'd disappear on her, again.
“Alex,” Jo whispered, staring at him as Jack looked between the two of them before the realization dawned across his face.
“Wait you're her Alex, Alex Karev, Josie's ex-husband,” Jack said his expression turned to anger and he moved in front of Jo. “You have some nerve…”
“It's okay Jack,” Jo said, finally looking away from him to address Jack, putting a hand on his shoulder. “Just let me do this consultat and then we can go get lunch.”
“Sorry, Wilson, but it's Izzie Stevens and apparently she could be pregnant,” Owen said, holding up the tablet charts as Jo huffed and glared at Alex, before looking over at Izzie who was talking to Schmitt oblivious to the situation in front of her.
“She's not really, we just lied because Jack told us about you and he wanted to see you,” Alex said, still staring at Jo.
She came into the room and read over her chart. Her eyes glanced up at Izzie and the anger in her eyes disappeared into a flash of sadness.
“You must be Josie, Jack was telling us all about you.” Izzie gushed with a smile completely oblivious to who she was talking to. “How are you still on your feet at 36 weeks with twins? When I had my twins I was so eager to go on maternity leave!”
Jo's glare returned as she set him with a look, putting a hand on her belly.
“Let's just run a urinalysis and page me with the results,” Jo said, glancing at the intern.
“But I'm a surgical intern,” They said, reluctant to take the table from Jo.
“Just do it, Adams!” Jo glared at him and the intern shut up and took the tablet.
Jo glanced at Alex for a second. His lips parted and he wanted to talk to her, but then Izzie reached out and gripped his hands. He glanced down at Izzie before looking back to Jo. There was so much hurt and pain in her eyes.
“Jo, I'm sorry,” Alex said and it seemed to break the spell that held them as Jo nodded and turned to leave.
“I'll be back when the results come in,” Jo said, as she left, leaving his words hanging between them.
Alex couldn't bear to watch her leave, but he did. He saw her walk over to Jack and greet him with a smile. She melted into his arms and hugged him. Jack placed a kiss on her head. Then he put another hand on her back, gently rubbing up and down before they started to walk away.
Alex couldn't help the thought that he should be the one rubbing her back, he should be kissing her head and stressing about her working and not taking leave. He also thought that she should be having his baby, his twins. But he missed that chance when he left. He gave up having a life with her, a family. There was no chance that they could get together now.
“That nurse Olivia always was so short, I can't believe you ever slept with her,” Izzie said with a glare at him and Alex just nodded.
He wasn't surprised Izzie didn't recognize Jo, she had only seen her once in the photo Alex kept in his wallet. Owen and Schmidt glanced at her with raised eyebrows before they looked at Alex, but he just shook his head. The doctors had agreed that it was better to give in to the delusions. Correcting her only led to anger and tears and frustration.
That was the real reason he left, because he had to take care of his kids and give them someone to count on. He knew Jo didn't deserve the burden of all of this. It was his and his alone to take care of and that's what he would do. No matter how much it hurt or how much she wanted to chase after his happiness, to chase after Jo.
As much as he loves his kids, as much happiness and love and laughter that they brought to his life, there was always a piece of him that was missing. That piece of Jo that was always the other half of his heart. His heart would never heal from the hole that came when he left and ripped her out of his heart. Just like the brain tumor Izzie had was leaving a hole in her memory.

Just realised that one half of both of my greys otps (japril & izzex) got married on the same day, and both of those marriages ended in shambles (as they should have), only for them to go back to their exes that they should've been with all along 🤭

You so get why izzex are soulmates, so individually flawed but perfect together! The thing is, Jo has such a crappy attitude---and I get it, her life sucked, it's totally understandable that she's cynical and prickly and guarded and all that. But since Alex is the same way, he needs someone as passionate and emotional as Izzie to make him see things more positively even when he doesn't want to and to never give up, just as she needs him to help her be realistic and rational, to know when to back away and accept that sometimes things suck and people dislike or hurt you and you can't always change it, but you will survive. I don't know, they just still move me, and I love that they're in a tranquil area with their two kids!
I think there's something lovely about two people who are broken in the same way healing each other! And I think Jo and Alex had that in some ways. It's just not what scratches my itch, personally. I agree, I ship people who balance each other, who challenge each other, whose differences never overcome their love for each other or their deep core of sameness.
Thanks for the ask!
