Isuke Matsukawa headcanons

Matsukawa doesn’t like haircuts. I won’t go so far as to say it’s a fear or anything as extreme as that, but he plain out hates having his hair cut. It was this that led Matsukawa into theatre though. It was during his earlier school days that he first watched a play put on by Mankai. He went into the performance though expecting to dislike it and to think it was a waste of his time. He was astounded throughout it. At some point in the story, he was whisked away and enraptured by the actors onstage, the costumes, the whole shebang. He never forgot the name of the troupe and he’d go watch Mankai productions whenever he could. It started to become so that the actors would instantly recognize him and when they did, they were always so kind to him. Even the Director took a liking to him and offered him a summer job helping with the theatre. It was a job that inspired him and he made sure to attend a high school close to the theatre, where he’d work even unpaid labour in any moment that wasn’t occupied by school. It was Mankai that was the place where Matsukawa really found himself feeling completely, utterly at home and that’s why the company is so, so important to him, even when all the former members and the Director have gone missing. To give up Mankai, to Matsukawa, would be like asking someone to step aside and have their beloved childhood or adult home foreclosed upon and then demolished.

Matsukawa’s love for and talent for music was something that was instilled in him from a very young age. His own mother was an accomplished pianist before she got married and had children. Within the home, his mother would play piano every day, something Matsukawa always looked forward to just as much as his mother did. If his mother didn’t sit at the piano and play something for him for a whole day, it was a sure sign that something was wrong. His mother took to teaching him the piano as soon as little Matsukawa was able to spread his chubby little fingers and key the pieces. He learned sheet music from her and learned a love for various music genres through his father’s large vinyl collection and his dad introducing him to a lot of different artists and bands, including various foreign ones that it’s likely he would not have discovered otherwise. When Matsukawa became interested in learning different instruments, his parents didn’t discourage him at all but instead supported his interest, getting him the instrument in question and music lessons with as skilled a teacher as they could find. Even as an adult, music is such a dear thing to Matsukawa. It’s something he doesn’t think he can separate from himself. To him, it’s not a hobby or simply a passion but something engrained in every fiber of his being.

I think Matsukawa is a little near-sighted. He definitely needs his glasses or to wear contacts to see, but it’s not to the point where he’s blind as fuck without those glasses. He can still make out basic shapes and fuzzy details without the glasses. He tends to like having more than one pair of glasses at hand. At the very least, he needs at least one spare pair, though he does prefer to have at least three and would prefer to have five or six pairs so he can switch them up whenever he wants to get dressed up or wants a change. However, being a broke bitch does keep him down to the two pairs – a daily one and a spare in case his normal ones get broke. Both of them are older prescriptions and frames, because again, a lack of cash flow is something Matsukawa is acquainted with. While he can wear contacts, and does have a pair stashed away, he normally can’t be bothered with all the fuss contacts entail, including getting them in. It’s not something that comes easily for him, so it takes Matsukawa at least five minutes to get his contacts in and to get himself used to them.

It’s no secret that Matsukawa can be a little lazy, especially when it comes to cleaning. It’s just not fun and he really doesn’t see too much harm in taking one or two days off of cleaning duties. Matsukawa is someone who’s not too hung up on having a neat, organized, completely mess-free space. He actually kind of the opposites. Contrary to what some people might think, Matsukawa is someone who does care about the aesthetics of his place and how it looks, but a little bit of mess, like some laundry on the floor, some dishes in the sink, a cobweb in the corner of the ceiling, a cup on a table somewhere, isn’t something that he thinks affect the aesthetics of a space much. It’s almost the opposite – to him, those things make a place look lived in. It makes a place feel comfy, cozy, warm, and loved. Clutter also does the same for him. Some clutter and lots of things, in his opinion, make a place feel like a true home and it tells the story of the place’s occupant. It’s why he isn’t really ever all that bothered over the ‘trash’ that Misumi brings home as his precious triangles. It’s why he’s not too bothered over the state of the storerooms or such, though he is aware enough to know that the others don’t share his views, which is why he tries to at least take cleaning as seriously as he can.

Matsukawa loves karaoke. He’s always going to take the opportunity to go and some of his best memories are going with the others in Mankai Company. It’s impossible, in his mind at least, to not have fun at karaoke if you have friends or people you enjoy with you. That and he does kind of really enjoy and look forward to getting to show off his own musical talents. He doesn’t have too many talents, in his mind, so he can be forgiven for wanting to show off here and there, right? Karaoke is always going to be among his list of group-bonding ideas or ideas for fun nights out. Though Matsukawa doesn’t get a lot of first dates, as he’s not particularly popular when it comes to romance, karaoke is the first date idea he falls back on and he’d love finding a romantic partner who wants to go to different karaoke establishments with him as date ideas.

It feels, to Matsukawa, like he never quite gets enough sleep. He tries to get on a good sleep schedule, to make himself go to bed at proper times. He tries to make himself wake up early every day, to follow all the rules for better sleep he’s never heard. He’s just not great at keeping on doing those things for more than a night or two. After that, he falls back into bad habits. It really doesn’t help that Matsukawa is, by his nature, a night owl. He seems to get more energy and gets more alert as the night gets further on and he doesn’t typically pass out until the wee hours of the morning. It’s why he’s prone to sleeping in until noon, to try to balance it out. The days when, because he’s got a lot of work to get done and needs to get up earlier, he’s running on maybe a couple hours sleep feel like they’re the most common to Matsukawa and, in his ideal world, mid-day naps would always be a thing.

I personally headcanon Matsukawa as having come from a rather big family. I do think he has at least one sibling, probably two, and I see him as being the baby of the bunch. On top of just his immediate family though, just the people he grew up in the same household with, I think his family is pretty large. He has several aunts and uncles, at least one still surviving grandparent, and he has quite a few cousins. He’s not super close to all those family members he has though. There’s a couple cousins he’s on good terms with, he’s his mother’s favourite and loved by his father, but both his siblings aren’t quite as supportive of his theatre work as an adult, thinking that he’s simply being lazy or refusing to grow up and become a responsible adult. He’s kind of considered the ‘weirdo’ outside of his parents and those cousins he’s in good with.

Matsukawa has a love for soaps and J-dramas. His favourite ones are either really human dramas, where he can really root for and grow attached to the characters, even in just an episode, or ones that have romance elements. Some of his favourites include Midnight Diner, Long Vacation, Kinou Nani Tabeta?, and Nobuta wo produce. His absolute favourites though, the ones he can watch a dozen times over and never get sick of them are Hana Yori Dango and Nodame Cantabile. For some reason, school settings always work for him.

Masumi: My role is an android who has been sleeping for a long time before they wake up. That’s why figuring out what to do and say for my role study will be tricky.

Izumi: Kazunari-kun—since when did you…!?

Kazunari: I was passing by and happened to hear y’all talking about a guest appearance!

Masumi: What the hell all of a sudden? I’m discussing with Director. You’re interrupting.

Kazunari: Aw, c’mon. Don’t say that! Apparently, there’s an android café that’s all the rage these days. I heard it’s recommended as a date spot too ♪

Izumi: So a place like that exists. Maybe you can get some sort of hint. What do you think, Masumi-kun?

Masumi: I guess I might be able to use that as reference for an android… …

Kazunari: Ehh!? Isn’t it totes unusual for Massu to be unmotivated at moments like this!?

Masumi: Be quiet. …The android I’m playing follows the last request of their master who passed away. They’re sleeping while waiting until their master’s child, the one who they will serve next, appears. So while the movements are important, I feel like I’ll be able to draw the audience in even more if I act while emphasizing their determination to fulfil their master’s dying wish.

Izumi: Masumi-kun…! The highlight of this role is the relationship with their master, so I think you’re on the right track.

Kazunari: I see~. The feelings they have towards their previous master and the child they’re gonna serve afterwards are important.

Masumi: That’s right. So, reflecting on the setting, I came up with a way to prepare for my role. I’d like you to help me, Director.

Izumi: Oh, what is it? I’ll lend a hand with anything I can!

Masumi: …I’m going to stop seeing you from now on.

Kazunari: SAY WHAT!?
