The Journey That Led Me to Book Blogging and Reviewing
The Journey That Led Me to Book Blogging and Reviewing
You know when I started this blog I couldn’t find a reason to keep writing. I would have a million ideas of what I wanted to do but I would never commit to it. At first, I thought about making it personal. Putting myself out there for all to see and emotions and what not, but that’s not me.
I’m not that girl. I hate sitting around and discussing our feelings and what not, no point in it. Which…

I am so excited about this one! Here’s a children’s book that introduces kids to the wisdom and beauty of the teachings of Julian of Norwich. The main character of the book is a girl named for Julian, and she struggles to accept the illness and death of her beloved grandmother, who helps her to frame this loss in the light of Lady Julian’s wisdom. It’s beautifully illustrated and have a wonderful message. And yes, plenty of cats… and hazelnuts! Get a copy for a child you love… and another copy for yourself! We’re Hungry Too by Sylvia Green
My review: 3 of 5 stars
The concept of thinking of the needs of others is a good one, and the illustrations were pretty good, but I thought the text left something to be desired. It simply wasn’t catchy or clever or particularly interesting. I doubt this is one that children would want to read more than once. I did like the resources at the end that helped guide people to organizations that feed and care for animals as well as people. Searching for the animals pictured in the back of the book also added a bit to the appeal. Still for a picture book, I found it to be just average. If a parent, teacher or guardian wanted to impart the idea of feeding others, it would suffice.
Please note: In accordance with FTC guidelines, I received a free copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

#SeaofBooks third quarter edition. 📚 Bought books from Chapters and Pages, NBS, Booksale, and #MIBF2018 - all for sale. Cheapest was P6! I had a great deal on each book 😊 (though now I have to restrain myself from buying more 😅). Thanks also to @ivpress for the review copies! Some are not included in this photo as they arrive October onwards. Two more things I need: more time to read and a new shelf. 😂 #books #bookstagram #JulytoSeptember #bookhaul 😍 https://www.instagram.com/p/BrAcDqHBDDE/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1d9o3t8t7c6o7

Free copy of bilingual book ‘En la mesa de Dios/At God's Table’!
I’ve been excited about this book ever since it was published in the spring ... and now I - and you - can get a free copy! [see below]
It's a beautifully illustrated children's book on the Lord's Supper, written in both Spanish and English. Authors: María Eugenia Cornou, Carrie Steenwyk, and John D. Witvliet Illustrator: Joel Schoon-Tanis
At God’s Table/En la mesa de Dios is a bilingual (Spanish-English) children’s book that explores the richly symbolic practice of the Lord’s Supper in Christian worshiping communities. In this vividly illustrated book, the celebration of the Lord’s Supper unfolds as a multi-faceted event that nourishes our faith and stirs our imagination to see the gifts of grace and signs of God's ongoing work in our lives and God’s world.

*United States and Canada users only. Mailing address required for delivery.
The book retails for $19 plus shipping, so this is a marvelous gift to the Church from the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship!
Calvin College Press has written, “It is told from a Reformed perspective. However, we have also had Catholic reviewers read it and note how serviceable it could be. In fact, because the book sticks to many key themes directly related to the biblical accounts of the Lord's Supper and avoids technical theological terms, it actually is very, very serviceable for a broad ecumenical audience.”
About the contributors
María Cornou is program manager for international and intercultural learning at the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship. She recently completed her Ph.D. in theology with the Free University of Amsterdam. She is originally from Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Carrie Steenwyk is children's ministry director and lead curriculum writer at Harderwyk Ministries in Holland, Michigan. She teaches at Kuyper College and edits for several publishers, including the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship. With CICW, she has been co-editor for the Church at Worship series, and co-author of At Your Baptism.
John D. Witvliet is director of the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship and professor of congregational and ministry studies, music, and worship at Calvin College and Calvin Theological Seminary, respectively. He is co-editor of Psalms for All Seasons: A Complete Psalter for Worship, with Joyce Borger and Martin Tel (Brazos Press and Faith Alive Christian Resources, 2012).
Joel Schoon-Tanis has written and illustrated several books (recently 40: the Biblical story), painted murals around the world (including Kenya, Zambia, the Separation Wall in Palestine), and painted nearly a gazillion paintings in his career. In 2016 one of these was presented to the Pope.

Review:
"En la mesa de Dios/At God’s Table is a great help to parents and an engaging gift to young children. The mystery of the Lord’s Supper is something children sense from the earliest years of congregational worship with the family of faith. This vibrantly illustrated and thoroughly biblical explanation of this sacred meal will help build anticipation as well as understanding for children participating at any level of sacramental practice and denominational breadth. The bilingual text is helpful for building a sense of the world-wide reality of the Christian church and the guide for parents included in the back of the book helps build the engagement of children with the supper over a good span of time without being complicated. The real depth and strength of the book is how the Lord’s Supper is connected creatively with the whole of Jesus’ ministry in a look-n-see manner. I heartily recommend this book for helping parents in the pew engage their children in approaching sacramental practice in the church with faith and wonder." —Robbie F. Castleman, author of Parenting in the Pew (IVPress)

I haven’t read this one yet, and I’m not sure I even fully understand this notion of “extended cognition” — it seems to be the idea that our consciousness is not limited to our physical bodies, and so our environmental, our tools, our community, etc. all impacts what we know, how we see, who we are. It sounds a bit Buddhist to me (I say that as a good thing), and perhaps can be a clue to why relationships and relationality are so important to Christ’s teachings. John O’Donohue said the soul is not “in the body” but the body is in the soul. That seems to a mystical and poetic way of suggesting that extended cognition is a thing. Not sure I can boil this down to an elevator pitch, but the more I think about what this book is trying to say, the more intriguing it becomes and the higher it moves up my “to read” list.
