I love the concept of @carryonthroughtheages. Thank you @bazzybelle for making an event to inspire my favourite kind of content. Once I post this, I can't wait to enjoy everyone else's wonderful offerings!

I chose Victorian England as my time period and worked with an illustration from “Punch, or the London Charivari”, Volume LXVIII (68), published in London in 1875. I thought that the original image had some queer undertones just waiting to be dialed up. Click on the link to see the similarities and differences of the source and completed piece.

I also wrote a 4K fic to accompany the art. A Subtle Bravery is up on ao3.

I can sometimes get bogged down thinking that I still have so far to go in terms of skill and I forget to look at how far I've come. I've experienced tremendous growth as an artist and baker and I don't often give myself credit.

This year has also been a big year of making friendships and really feeling like part of a community. I had the pleasure of meeting a few fandom friends in person as well as connecting with others through friendship bracelets and holiday cards. It's been the highlight of my year!

At least in this corner of the internet, I look forward to what the next year brings!

Six Sentence Solstice

Helloooo! Thank you to everyone who has been tagging me over the past few months. I’ve been around but haven’t felt much like sharing; I usually hate whatever I’m writing until the first draft is done, but I finally have a first draft of Basil Pitch’s Diary to edit, and feel suddenly excited to share.

Next week I am hosting my family for Christmas and will be cosplaying as a Dickens character by roasting a goose. The goose chase (nearest goose farm is 30 miles away) will take a lot of my energy tomorrow, so we're here a day early. Festive solstice, y'all. Here are are six fifteen sentences.

“Why are you being so nice to him?” Had not told Niall about the truce with Snow. Could not tell him about the Mage dropping Snow discarding Snow like a broken appliance. Obviously Snow was better off without him, but Snow didn’t see it that way. I didn’t want to embarrass him.  And I didn’t want to watch Niall cock his head and say Oh, Baz … “I’m not.” “You gave him an answer in Magic Words.” Miss Possibelf had been lecturing on how spells lose potency with disuse and had called on Snow to name an example. Did not think anyone had heard me lean toward him and whisper Deez nuts. “Power move.” “And at lunch the other day,” Niall pressed, “you spelled mustard off his tie.”  Fuck. Had thought Niall had been distracted, like everyone else in the dining hall, by the spectral pixie grandmother reducing our classmate to sparkly tears. I’d been haunted, too, by the image of neglected baby Simon, ignored by his caretakers, slathering himself in condiments.

Broken appliance inspo was my vacuum cleaner, which broke last night after years of faithful service. Maybe I’ll get it fixed, or maybe I’ll just murder it and steal its magic.

Thank you so much @rimeswithpurple @emeryhall @roomwithanopenfire @monbons @nausikaaa @artsyunderstudy and @martsonmars for the tags! You can definitely tell everyone is done digging themselves out of the holidays and countdown. I'm loving all the content I'm seeing.

I've particularly liked seeing some people's fandom's resolutions. It made me think of my own.

I spent a lot of last year trying to find a good balance between the things I'm obligated to do and the things I want to do. By the time the COC hit, I was in the mindset that the things I needed to do were too much and I had to skip COC this year. This made me incredibly angry and resentful. I hated that the thing I wanted to do was the thing I gave up. So, with spite fueling me forward, I did the COC and I'm so glad I did. But that did make me reflect on how I proceed.

I'm not going to overthink things. I'm going to do the things that make me happy. And what makes me happy is this fandom, the supportive people in it and writing. I need to lean on other folks for the things that are obligations. I don't have to do all the things, but I should at least do the things that bring me joy.

That being said, who wants to see a little of that joy?

I have something else that I'll be posting soon, but I don't want to spoil it so just know you'll see something soon-ish.

I've also got to start work shopping something for the COBB. If anyone has an idea I would not be opposed to a little jump start because I am stuck.

Determined to get Simon's attention in a way that doesn't involve (too much) violence, Baz starts sending Simon anonymous notes. Initially insults and practical jokes, Baz finally sends one intended to help, and finds himself pulled into Simon’s latest adventure in search of the six hares.

Thanks for the tags my friends! I was so excited for Wednesday to come so I could post again but then I did not write anything. Well, I just posted a fic but that doesn't count because it never crossed the WIP stage.

Anyway! I ended up writing something right now just for the sake of sharing it. From my COBB #1:

“Have you ever heard of knocking?”

Snow turns to look at the doorway so fast that his foot catches the corner of a crate and he almost loses his balance. He grabs a table for support, and I have to count to ten not to do something insane like move his hand away from the paper he's barely touching.

Inhale, exhale. Everything is fine.

“There isn't a door,” he says.

“You can knock on the jamb.”

I'm sure I look like a petulant child, crossed arms and all. But I did not come to work today prepared to deal with the human tornado of Simon Snow. I did not come prepared to deal with anyone at all. I never do.

And here's a little thing from a non WIP Brobelove that I posted just now:

But she won't go back, because there's nothing to go back to. Even if the world isn't ending. (The world isn't ending, but Agatha's already has, long ago.) It's just her, and hooves playing a symphony that goes straight to the centre of the earth. A tune that beats in sync with her heart, in sync with the leaves breathing around her and the water eating through the rocks. In sync with—fuck.

2024 Fandom in Review

Look I know it's been 2025 for five days now but has it, really? In the few days before NYD I saw all your wonderful retrospective posts while feverishly finishing the last chapter of Basil Pitch's Diary and thinking "wow that looks so fun must keep writing," so here we are. Also, are the earth's rotations not a construct of capitalism? Think about it.

I'm not sure how to calculate words written, because I posted a lot of stuff that I wrote before 2024. If you include everything I *posted* in 2024, it's 4 fics, totaling 56k:

Simon Snow and the Selkies Four (3k, T, for the Carry On Picture Book, featuring gorgeous art by @ionlydrinkhotwater and @technetiumai)

Basil Pitch's Diary (WIP, 11/14, 56k, T).

The Stag Party (WIP, 1/4, 1k, T, for @facewithoutheart's birthday.)

Into Her Arms (7k, T, for @ivelovedhimthroughworse's birthday, co-written with the fabulous @cutestkilla)

The entire picture book fic was written in 2022, though, and the first seven chapters of BPD were written in 2022-2023, so if you look only at what I wrote this year, it's more like 3 fics totaling 33k.

I feel like these numbers are very low compared with most people who posted these kinds of roundups--I see you out there beating yourselves with "only" 100k--but I'm honestly feeling pretty chuffed about it. And chuffed about feeling chuffed, if that makes any sense, because historically, going easy on myself has not been a strong suit.

It would be a lie to pretend I'm any less thirsty for external validation than ever. Part of why I'm feeling content about my word count is because I've been showered in love and support, by readers in general and especially in the form of Bunbaz art by Skee, Ashton, Dalia, Monica (and Monica, and Monica). Oh, and there was also @rimeswithpurple getting him tattooed on her fuckin' body. (He now has gray fur and black ears, btw, but I don't think that version is on tumblr dot com yet.) Whenever I feel imposter syndrome creeping up I look at and/or squeeze the Bunbazzes, and feel better. Thank you all for being such a supportive, steadfast, loving community.

In other ways it's been a bumper year for fandom. I got to meet many of you at SSCONe, and otherwise visited with fandom friends in four cities and two countries. I brought Tiny Baz to Sicily to learn about his roots (and to keep me company when I got COVID and had to cross a lot off my itinerary). I also got my hands on a full-size Baz standee who is still folded up in my closet (I KNOW) but who I vow will be out and proud by this time next year.

Anyway, 2024 was pretty good for me personally even though American democracy, such as it is, is in free-fall, and no matter what 2025 brings, you'll be the best part of it.

Six Sentence Sunday

As usual it's been a really, really long time since I made a wipsday post. Thanks @bookish-bogwitch, @artsyunderstudy and @leithillustration for tagging me this Solstice/Sunday 🥰

I've been mostly working on my fic for @carry-on-au-fest for the past couple months - it's just about fully written, and I am sooo impatiently waiting until I can share it in February! It's been so fun and easy to write. This is why I haven't written much at all on who are you in the dark - in comparison, that one is much more complex and harder to wrangle, lol. But trust that I am still chipping away at it, and hoping to have the next chapter ready soon <3

2024 Roundup

I've been looking at everyone's 2024 roundup and I'm blown away by how hard this fandom works. So many pieces of art, baked goods, and words written all in the name of one horny vamp and a devil-tailed muppet.

That being said, I didn't do near as much as you all have done. But here it was I accomplished this year:

Was surprised to see that I wrote 91,875 words this year. I can get very dialogue heavy and I'm really trying to work on my descriptions and such. I think the word count points to progress.

I finished one fic. Started another. and completed the COC Countdown this year.

I started this for 2023 COBB and I wanted to finish it before I needed to delve into 2024 COBB. This fic is one I'm really proud of.

This was my 2024 COBB submission. I'm still working on it, but got stalled and then COC happened and I put it on hold. I now have a good outline for the rest and should finish that up here soon. Maybe before COBB 2025 starts....

believe this was my 4th year participating in the COC and as always it's one of my favorite things to do in this fandom. The pressure, the prompts, ,the pressure.... oh wait I said that. And I truly can't believe that this year 's countdown had me writing my longest fic to date.

In none SnoBaz news, I a took up another hobby. I started crocheting in October when my work ran a 4 week workshop for beginners. I've basically been alternating between one night crocheting , one night writing since then. I'm currently making my cat a couch (don't judge, I promise she deserves it) Here are my creations:

Goals for next year.... hmmmmm.....

I know I need to carve more time in my schedule for writing. I'm bad at it. I seem to think that I only need to write when I have a solid idea, but I know that's not true. Just sit down, stare at the computer for an hour. You can always rewrite it if it's crap, but at least it's something.

I also want to get better at responding to comments. I long... no yearn for those comments. They get me though some really tough mental times. But man, I suck at letting you all know how much they mean to me. I'll work on it. I promise.

I hope to be able to take part in some more challenges this year. I've stuck to COBB and COC but maybe it's time to branch out. Throw some at me!

Either way, this fandom is the best. Here's to 2024 and may 2025 bring us more great content and friendships!

Wow, it feels like FOREVER since I posted anything. Thanks so much for the tags today @roomwithanopenfire, @meanjeansjeans, @monbons, @orange-peony, @nausikaaa, and @forabeatofadrum. And thank you so much to everyone else who’s been tagging me! I really do appreciate you all <3 It’s nice to see so many people creating! I’ve been feeling supremely UNcreative the past few weeks, but these things come and go, especially when life gets busy.

I do have some things to share! Here’s a snippet from one:

“We can send it to Oxford if you don’t want it in the flat, love,” Baz tells me as I sit on the bed and stare at the floor. He sits beside me and nudges my shoulder with his. “I can hide it away so well that you never have to lay eyes on it again.”

I let my head flop over so that it rests beneath his jaw. “Yeah, maybe.” A little snort escapes me as I grab hold of that thought. “Your dad’ll lose his rag if he finds out it’s there, imagine.”

And another:

Simon is cute, I suppose, in an apple-cheeked hero-who-saves-the-day sort of way. He’s gotten taller this year, although we’re still about the same height. You can see he was made to be broad, and he’s put on a lot of muscle. His skin and hair are nearly the same colour—a literal golden boy. Simon looks like what everyone expects for me. My magic isn’t particularly exceptional, and neither are my grades, but I’m pleasant to look at and refined—I have better manners than to be wearing shoes on the bed and letting my skirt ride up over my knickers, like Philippa is doing right now. I’m the sort of girl people expect to see on Simon’s arm. The sort of girl who will raise his perfect children.

A different one:

“Please,” I whimper. It sounds pathetic, but his smile is like the sun bursting out from behind a cloud. We kiss for what feels like hours; I’ve learned that he likes to treat making out like a mission, one whose mysteries he has to unlock and pry loose to succeed. He likes when I tell him what to do, and when I praise him for getting it right. The day I found out what ‘good boy’ could do for him was a very, very interesting one indeed. And most of all, his name. I’ll never tell him that I deliberately hold back calling him Simon lest it lose its power. “Simon,” I whisper now, with his hands on my waist, his mouth latched on my throat. “Good boy, Simon.”

And finally:

Dev’s makeup is more dramatic than mine, but I have to admit that bright colours suit him. His searing red lipstick is somewhat unfortunately applied however, having been slicked on well after getting in his cups. He still looks brilliant, full of life. A deep, abiding warmth settles into my gut as I watch my little family—it feels good to be together like this again. Dev’s free spirit is catching, and I move behind the kitchen door to pull the silver dress on, much to Fiona and Ebb’s delight.

Hello besties! It’s been a while since I had been active (in a interactive way) around here. Thanks a lot to @orange-peony for tagging me in today six sentences!

Inktober and life keeps me busy but here a sketch of Simon and Baz that, one day, will be a full illustration, background and everything. Till then, here the sketch, inspired by a Simon’s quote where he says he likes to hold Baz with everything he has or that he would like to grow extra arms so he can hold onto Baz (?) something like that.
