hi do you want to talk abt isaac.

basically i'm writing a cbs ghosts fic with a focus on some original characters but with a lot of nisaac and plenty of the entire cast in general

it'll have a lot of isaac's pov as well, with his thoughts about two people who can be openly queer in the modern era

but. since ive only watched like,, probably less than half of the show. i thought talking to someone else abt it could help me characterise everyone?? i also just want to talk abt it bc it's kind of a fixation right now haha

let me list out some timelines pre-death first :3

isaac's marriage to beatrice: before or during 1773 the american revolutionary war: 1775-1783 nigel's death: 1776 isaac's death: 1777

so since the start of season 1, despite isaac's efforts we could all still see the fact he does not find women attractive (he literally called his wife, beatrice a handsome woman) so we're thinking bad comphet for our guy here.

(this only applies pre-nisaac) there are five male ghosts of the main cast, so when they all collectively agree that one girl is attractive (maybe not pete), isaac naturally plays along with it, but. plays along badly. everyone could tell that he did not find that girl attractive

as during nisaac, he is still obviously hesitant to be open because he had never been in a relationship with another man. a homosexual relationship. but not only is he hesitant, he is scared.

why is he scared? take a guess of what punishment you'd get for being gay in the 1770s (especially 1776).

the death penalty.

and we all know our guy isaac likes to talk about himself, he was so heavily disappointed to see that all he was in history was a footnote, and how he was jealous that his rival, hamilton, got a whole MUSICAL made about him (isaac loves musical theatre so thats twice the angy) so it's reasonable for him to be scared of death.

but hes already dead, why still be scared?

i actually dont know why but it's probably muscle memory for isaac to pretend. maybe he only found out that queerness was legalized/modernized through sam, not even through the recently dead ones. gotta hand it to him though i cant keep up a facade for more than a century XD

anyway, him being hesitant isn't the only problem, it's also the way he handles his relationship with nigel. his only other serious relationship was with a woman he wasn't even romantically interested in, so he has no healthy base to rely his current relationship with. also, his god-forsaken terrible communication skills, bros been pretending so much that even his personal feelings should be hidden 😭🙏 who hurt u man?

honestly his poo communication skills can still be linked back to his marriage with beatrice. maybe he had no problem with her, therefore no feelings were required to be shared, and he didn't have the need to communicate. but with nigel is a whole different situation.

oh yeah speaking of nigel, like isaac he doesn't have a healthy basis for a relationship. in this case, he previously was in a homosexual relationship, but it was only a sexual (?) one (with jenkins, but idk about the sexual part so jenkins fans back me up 🙏🙏).

we do see in the series that isaac is taking baby steps in the relationship, as opposed to nigel who rushes the starting-to-adjust stage, because this isn't his first gay relationship (whos gonna tell him) which then results to isaac having certain feelings about it, which then results to isaac not communicating as to pretend he can manage their relationship.

one thing about isaac's "certain feelings", it's usually about little things not even serious stuff. he had gone on many respites (temporary break up) with nigel because of their political beliefs (TGE WAR FUCKING ENDED GET OVER IT), hobbies, and personal likes. instead of adjusting to each other, they still choose to follow what they want instead of each other's wishes.

so, TLDR; nigel and isaac, despite having been in previous relationships, are doodoo at expressing themselves and adjusting to one another. (boo)

The f1 community learned the frase regency bias and now every time someone compliments a driver they don't like and/or don't compliments a driver they like is regency bias. It's kinda tiring how they can't just enjoy the sport and have to play analysts when they don't have the credentials for it.

this is unfortunately how all internet spaces work esp with the average user becoming younger and learning new terminology through its social media reference. social media for a lot of young people and even ppl in their 20s like me is a primary spruce of information and socialisation and in so its natural that they will develop with their surroundings and what is prevalent on social media is performativity; which isn't technically a word but im using it to mean the act of speaking and acting in a performative nature. and im using that to mean that a lot of how we interact on one comes from trying to prove our credibility to the people around us and this is how it always has been in fan spaces- I remember being a kid and showing off tings like Pokemon trading cards or moshi monsters figurine collections and others doing similar things because we want to communicate that we are a credible part of the community and are knowledgable on the interest at hand. Im trying not to make this too long but basically what im saying is that the increase in accessibility to social media increases the range of people that you will be reacting with and want to fit in with and as particularly younger members of any community are introduced to. anew term they develop an understanding to it in a specific context in which it is always relevant to them. The understanding of what the words is intended to be used for becomes irrelevant in a sense because this is the only environment in which a lot of people will see it be used .

I talked about this on my other blog a while back but to give another example of how this develops look at the word 'victim'.

recently on twitter there was an incident in which a creator claimed to be a 'victim' of another creator- the highlighted incident was not being responded to in a video game lobby of 10 people. The use of victim rings alarm bells in peoples heads because that is a serious phrase but the question was never asked- a victim of what? the creator tried to say it was misogyny in the end because they are afab but again the referential event didnt show any misogyny- just a non response from someone in a video game where 10 people were talking at once but the internet took it by storm to spread awareness about this victims story. there was no harm or helplessness inflicted upon the creator nor was there a hoax to fall victim too there was no expression of why they felt victimised. victim in this case refers to anybody who has had a negative experience with another person.

'recency bias' faces a similar fate. yes there are conversations to be had about the recency bias in journalism and commentary in f1 and in toxic fan spaces but it is being applied to any instance of a driver who has faced recent success or misfortune. being a Ferrari fan you see both sides of the coin- instagram comments are full of middle aged men calling Charles washed up when that isn't true, and logging onto here ive had to block several accounts for complaining my appreciation for Carlos is just recency bias and I should look at the career scores for each driver . and thats where the issue is its being used to fundamentally compare two drivers it is used in arguments to demean another fan and prove someone else's favourite driver. the same with Hamilton and max. stroll and Alonso have gotten it recently. its not being used for its intended purpose because people have only perceived it in reference to driver comparisons and continue to perpetuate that relevancy.

its all to do with critical thinking really, as critical thinks skills are showing declines people are less likely to critically engage with the work at hand applying major bias to their perspectives or furthering the performativity of online spaces by engaging in discourse with a black and white perspective

🎶 A very important musical announcement!

🎶 Those of you who have been around since early last year may remember that I was accepted for a part in Hell's first official production of the Broadway musical Hamilton! You may also remember that not very much has been said about the show since then.

🎶 Unsurprisingly, there have been delays! Which I've unfortunately been unable to talk about—but today, I've finally been cleared to share some news.

🎶 So: it's with a heavy heart that I announce our actor for John Laurens and Philip Hamilton (who, to protect the privacy of his surviving loved ones, I will be referring to by his affectionate cast nickname of Whatsisname Sonboy Hamilton) perished as a result of the most recent extermination. Whatsisname was tragically caught outside during the first wave of attacks and critically injured; he was finally extinguished in his hospital bed early morning on the third, when he was apparently boiled alive by holy water in his veins.

🎶 Any rumors that Whatsisname was deliberately tied outside for the angels to take are so unfounded that the authorities decided they aren't even worth investigating. The doctors at the hospital are confident that it was the angelic influence lingering on his wounds that spontaneouslly converted his IV drip into holy water, and not that his IV was tainted. I asked them myself to be sure that's what they think. No foul play is suspected.

🎶 He passed peacefully in his hospital bed, surrounded by his dear friends, the Hamilton cast and crew.

🎶 But as dearly as we'll miss him, for now, let's focus on some good news! Within the past two weeks:

Whatsisname's understudy, who departed from the show last July reporting a "hostile work environment," has reached out to us graciously volunteering in the wake of this tragedy to take up the role of Laurens/Philip again! Apparently, this time around, the work environment feels far less hostile.

Four of the show's most generous donors (including an overlord and a noble)—who'd previously withdrawn their funding, citing conflicts with a member of the cast—have again agreed to sponsor the show. Their funding will be put toward the crew's back pay and our marketing campaign.

The owner of a downtown theater, who declined our application to rent the performing space after a disastrous little argument during a meeting with the cast, has reconsidered his position, approved our application, and given us permission to move our rehearsals inside the theater so we can start our final rehearsals.

All eight of our cast members who tragically perished during backstage brawls with Whatsisface have been replaced.

And our third replacement George Eacker, who was hospitalized while rehearsing his duel scene after somebody accidentally loaded Whatsisname's pistol with angelic bullets—again—has made a full recovery! We're thrilled to welcome him back!

And to top it all off, we've just celebrated our tenth day in a row of getting all the way through a full rehearsal without being interrupted by a fight, an argument, a mean-spirited prank, an angry storm-off, an accusation of someone hogging someone else's limelight, or a sulky performance so lackluster that the entire rehearsal has to grind to a halt around it—which is the longest streak we've ever had!

🎶 Amazing how many of these things have coincidentally come together since the beginning of the year! I'm sure it must be due to the upwelling of sympathy and support we've received in the wake of Whatsisname's tragic extermination.

🎶 Although Whatsisname's demise is a great loss to the show, we're confident that the production will be better than ever before, in honor of his memory... and keep an eye on your local paper's entertainment section, because we'll be opening soon!

IRL Peggy Schuyler Facts 

Margarita Schuyler was born on September 19, 1758, likely at Philip Schuyler’s mom’s home, where Philip, his wife Catharine, and their eldest two daughters were then residing  

For Angelica and Eliza, Philip had included the hour of their birth, but with Peggy he stops doing this and never starts it again

Peggy’s full name is Margarita, which is Dutch, but she was known as Margaret (the Anglicized version) 

She seemed to typically go by “Peggy” (this is how she’s referred to in letters)

Peggy moved into the Schuyler Mansion when she was about seven

She likely had some time away from her older sisters when she was this age, as they were already studying in New York City

Peggy soon joined them for tutoring in the city, where they lived with family and family friends

Peggy was an especially gifted artist

She was best known for painting miniatures (very small portraits) 

She and her two older sisters were said to have worn such portraits around their necks when they were separated :’) 

She was also HELLA smart

She was likely schooled in everything, from typical “feminine” studies of art, music, and dance, to the less usual arithmetic, philosophy, geography, languages, history, etc.  

This is because Philip Schuyler was unusually progressive in educating his daughters 

And because his daughters were so bright!

Peggy was fluent in English, Dutch, and French

Then she taught herself German 

By reading engineering treatises written in German

Did I mention she was really smart???

At one point James McHenry, friend to A. Ham and aide-de-camp to George Washington, insults Peggy in a letter to Ham

He writes “Peggy, though, perhaps a finer woman, is not generally thought so.”

He goes on to tell Hamilton that Peggy puts off other women because she attracts all the men to her, leaving the other women without male attention

How does she attract them?

Her intellect

McHenry compares her to Swift’s Vanessa, a really smart character

He means this all as an insult, but it ends up showing us how smart, and likely witty, Peggy truly was

Peggy was likely just as smart as we often give Angelica credit for!!!

But she didn’t move in the same circles or meet some of the incredibly influential people Angelica later befriended, so we don’t have as much record of her in letters 

Contrary to popular belief, Peggy did not have a tomahawk hurled at her during a raid of the Schuyler Mansion

Peggy married super well

Technically she married her cousin, but that was applauded back then

This man is Stephen Van Rensselaer III, who was set to inherit a HUGE track of land in the upper Hudson River Valley

She was 24 and he was either 18 or 19 when they wed

There are rumors it was an elopement, but it wasn’t 

Those rumors started because Stephen’s friends were questioning why he wanted to get married so young

He was getting married before he even inherited all that land!!!

But that didn’t stop him or Peggy

They were likely married at the Van Rensselaer Manor in Albany (which no longer stands, sadly)

It was probably a grand wedding

Not in the sense we think of it, but for the standards of the time period

Two very wealthy families marrying into each other (again) was always a happy occasion

They had a happy marriage! 

They lived at the Van Rensselaer Manor and enjoyed a lavish life style 

It’s important to note: this included slavery

Peggy had grown up in one of the largest slave-holding homes in Albany, and married into another large slave-holding family

So while we don’t know much about their day-to-day life, we know it included enslaving people 

Peggy birthed three children, but only one survived (Stephen Van Rensselaer IV) 

Peggy seemed to have inherited her father’s gout, meaning she was in joint/foot pain a lot of the time

This escalated in the early 1800s

Peggy eventually died on March 14th, 1801, at Albany

Hamilton, with whom she had shared a close bond, was by her side

She was only 42 when she died, which was considered young in the time period, contrary to popular belief

They said she died of “gout of the stomach,” which we now interpret as likely being stomach cancer

She’s now buried in Albany Rural Cemetery in the Van Rensselaer plot

She is much, much more than “And Peggy!”

Howdy 

I haven’t done an official blog post in a while so here goes. Rather Here Comes Trouble. hahaha 

I am sat in Sadlers Wells gearing up for Wild Card this Thursday. Watching the lovely energetic Keira Martin run through her solo. After settling and really just grounding into the fact we have arrived to this moment. 

In hind sight we gaze at the reality at how we got here and why we are here. The amazement we both feel at the fact we’re here. Although the fact of the matter is this is not the roof. The sky is the limit and with that being the case we digress but I insist we must digress with new eyes........ 

At a conference last week organised by Serendipity in Leicester called Let’s Dance International Frontiers. A lot was discussed around Black Dance in Britain rather Black Dance (Dance created out of African Origin) in the world. I recall a presentation by Kwesi Johnson who said “If you keep doing the same thing you must expect the same result” (or something around those lines). Over all his talk really inspired me to keep going but innovate!!!!!

I felt I couldn’t keep going. 

Keep pushing to be in an industry where at times i don’t feel valued or valid. Being in an industry where the things I want to make work about challenges the status quo. Being in an industry where my job title is more than dancer/choreographer. Its project manager/artistic director/marketing manager/accountant/musician/movement director. 

And then I have to find time for family. Being in an industry where I am mostly feeling alone and tired. 

These were my thoughts for the past 2-3 months especially after the birth of my daughter whom I now have to be responsible for. How am I to provide for this person? In an industry where Im on the fence half the time? Hence I auditioned for Hamilton, got a recall but then didn’t get it. But if i got it this would of been a different blog post.

These thoughts started to dim thanks to recent events:

First going to the conference experiencing dancing with my Brothers & Sisters from Haiti and Norway. Listening to inspirational Artist of colour from around the world and from generations before me speak their truths. I feel refuelled to carry on but more so to change my dependancy and to not stick to the known avenues of how this system currently seems to work. I choose to no longer believe my voice is only in an echo chamber and I choose to no longer believe I wont be supported in the long run. 

I have a fear that I am a fad or fashion just passing through this season but I cannot live with this state of mind. I am beyond the industry because I believe so and nothing can change that. I choose to make my work hard to swallow, hard to define, hard to turn off because the world is the way it is so why not mimic the times. 

I don’t understand art based trivially and only on simple escapism there is always a truth of society to tell when making. The world needs this. The reality still remains in terms of the things which annoy me in this industry and type of career I've chosen however I have a new feeling and instinct that knows the race is only just beginning and this feeling today is only momentarily so I must enjoy each and every one of them. Good and Bad. 

My tribe and I went away for the weekend. This was great. Its something I don’t do much and its something i could never afford way back in the day. We went to the country side and went to a National Forest for a bit, it was nice to turn off and show little Nyrah some trees which she found very interesting. Seriously im in love with my daughter im already dreading having to be nice to boys who want to ask her out as they will as I did to many girls when I came of age. OMG scary thought!!!!!! This reminded me that life is beautiful in how our perception can be grabbed and that we should value the good times we get to have with new people and the ones dear to us. 

I started to reflect more and realise ive come a long way. In five years although I don’t see any awards and I haven’t as yet been commissioned to make anything on any dance companies and all the stuff that is still in my head to be made I still cant see how they will be made. but im going to try!!!!

What I have done so far is incredible!!!!

I not only danced in numerous performance (not just dance) companies and toured around the world. I made a solo about my life and a serious issue to do with society period not potent just now but forever. I h=can do my solo forever if I want to.  

I have toured my own work for two years to15 venues across the country. All done from my brain a laptop and cultivated a bag of support. Yes there are politics around why it was me and no one else yes there are politics to do with the industry heads and how they chose and venues and producers and programmers. All those things but none the less I've put so much work in and I have seen results the results is the fact I am still here. I have a healthy mailing list, I have great outcome of audiences regularly, I teach regularly and I can even give other people work. Ive had three successful arts council applications one of which I wrote entirely by my self, literally had no help with the Snakebox project and I organised my first tour by my self. 

Im saying we must count our blessings. Before we call it quits and get frustrated with where we think we are and where we think we should be. Remember where you have been. I was a kid in Jamaica who would walk home after school with a bunch of my friends and we’d take different routes just so walking home would take longer and that we could explore. Taking the long way so we know the ins and outs of where we are. 

Am I doing this with my career??? I dunno. If there is a short route would I have taken it? No I don’t think so. This route is teaching me who to listen to its teaching me who people want me to be verses who I am and who I am to be. Its teaching me about how the imperialism I learned only lightly about in Jamaica in Primary School lives and breaths in this society, in its arts institutions, in its everyday and I am learning to be the Black Panther camouflaged in the dark depths of the unknown, a cosmic blackness which is my cloak of safety and strength. it gives me prevision to step into every and any room and turn the tides in my favour. 

iF YOU ARE AT A STAGE IN WHATEVER YOU DO AND YOU THINK YOU CANT KEEP GOING??? ITS OKAY. YOU’VE GOT THIS. IT MAY NOT BE THAT YOU HAVE TO KEEO GOING THE SAME WAY MAYBE START GOING A DIFFERENT WAY. YOU WERE RUNNING STRAIGHT INTO THE CORE OF THE SUN.

I know, I still like the idea of trans Mutsuki better but other than any hints dropped in canon, I just think it’s very unlikely that TG as a Japanese manga will add a 100%, conmpletely confirmed LGBTQ character. I believe Ishida himself is pretty open towards the LGBTQ community (Nico’s portrayal is a bit questionable but in an omake Yomo is shown thinking that anyone he dates could become Touka’s aunt OR uncle (though of course that could be a translation error), Shuu is a subversion of manga stereotypes regarding gay men and TG in general has a lot of interesting themes regarding sexuality and gender), but idk, the idea of a mainstream seinen manga like TG adding LGBTQ themes that go beyond heavy implication seems unlikely (though who knows, it could happen).

Mutsuki just makes me bitter. FIrst all the arguments about their gender and now I don’t even like them anymore (they used to be an adorable cinnamon roll but after recent chapters, while I still feel for them they’ve become a lot less sympathetic).

(Also this just makes me sound salty but I recently came across a very aggressive blog dedicated to reminding everybody that MUTSKI IS MALE AND YOU ARE ALL WRONG and reading through it just made me kinda mad and irritated all at once. Once a trans person made a post saying that despite being trans themself they didn’t think Mutsuki was, offering several manga moments as decent evidence and being quite polite, and the mod of this blog answered them with what basically boils down to 'lol no it’s possible to be transphobic even if you’re part of the LGBTQ community and you are clearly one of these people’.)

Don’t worry, cinnamon roll Hinami isn’t being forgotten! :) I’m really looking forward to her meeting Akira. I’ve always liked Hina but these recent chapters pushed her up on my ‘favorite characters’ list- she’s just way too sweet.

Yeah, I kinda hated Urie at first (I understood his goals and motivations but did he really have to be such a jerk? I honestly thought he was going to get somebody killed in the auction arc) but after the auction arc I started to like him better (I think the official moment I decided ‘I like Urie Kuki as a character’ was when Shirazu died) and I kinda freaked out when I realized what happened to him…

He would make a great Burr though. I think he’s way more willing to act than Burr and is not a ‘talk less, smile more’ kind of person (more like a ‘talk less and don’t smile at all’ type) but they’re still really similar. I could also see Urie singing Wait for It…with Kaneki as Hamilton. Not because Kaneki particularly fits Hamilton but because of how Burr is clearly somewhat jealous about Hamilton’s progress despite not approving of his methods in Wait For It (in an interview about the song I think LMM said something about it describing the feeling of watching your friends and acquaintances getting so far ahead in life and thinking 'Wait for it; someday I’ll get there too’).

Am I the only one who headcanons that despite acting super classy and not knowing much about rap/hip-hop before someone (maybe Hori?) gets him to listen to it, Tsukiyama actually turns out to be a really good rapper?

Thoughts on the $5 Challenge, the 365-Day Challenge, and Other Financial 'Challenges'

The new year tends to bring forth a lot of people pledging resolutions for the coming year and talking about their successes (and occasionally their failures) over the last year. One particular flavor of this phenomenon that I find interesting is the challenge, something that seems to pop up in various ways with various self-improvement strategies at the turn of the year. Ill hear from a few people that succeeded at a challenge the previous year, and from others asking whether a particular challenge theyre considering makes sense. So, whats a challenge? Its basically any year-long plan for self improvement that requires you to take some simple action on a very regular basis throughout the year, one that accumulates into a big overall success at the end of the year. Here are a few of the ones Ive seen that are financially related: The Starbucks challenge means you pay for your coffee at Starbucks (or at any coffee shop) with cash and put aside the change you receive until the end of the year, at which point you can do something big with it (pay off debt, etc.). The $5 challenge means that whenever you receive a $5 bill as change, you put that $5 bill aside until the end of the year. Those accumulated $5 bills can be used for some type of financial move. The 52-week challenge, which was so popular a couple of years ago that I wrote about it and suggested a better version and Simple Dollar editor Jon Gorey recently wrote about six additional variations, involves saving a dollar a week plus a dollar for every previous week for the entire year. So, on the first week you save $1, on the second week you save $2, on the third week you save $3, and so on until the 52nd week where you save $52 (over the year, you end up saving about $1,400). Again, you use that money for some kind of financial move, perhaps just something as simple as paying off holiday credit card debt. The weight loss financial challenge is a fun one. Every time you weigh in this year, put aside $5 for every pound youve lost since the last time. When you hit your goal (or the end of the year), use that money to celebrate. These types of challenges are quite brilliant because they incorporate several key elements of what makes a goal successful. Theyre specific. Its very clear what youre supposed to do when taking on a challenge. When X happens, do X is about as clear as can be. Theyre measurable. Your progress is extremely clear because you measure your success by whether you did it each time and you measure the overall total by the dollars and cents. Theyre actionable. You take a simple action to complete each step. Theyre realistic. For most people, the steps in these challenges are completely realistic. Almost anyone can take these on (or take on some simple variation). Theyre time-bound. These challenges last for a year. You know exactly when its done. On the whole, I endorse such challenges rather strongly. If you find one that clicks with you and motivates you to put money aside for the future, then by all means, dive in! I just have a few caveats in general. First, its a good idea to use the money at the end of the year for actual financial progress rather than a celebration. If you take on one of these challenges and find yourself with a few hundred dollars or a thousand dollars at the end of the year, use it to do something lasting and meaningful. Pay off a credit card debt. Pay down a student loan debt. Put it in your Roth IRA. Sure, such a choice might seem boring, but it takes that money from being something thats used for a momentary celebration and then forgotten to being something that has a lasting positive effect on your life. An extra thousand dollars toward a car loan or a student loan can make a real difference in your life. Paying off a credit card can make a real difference in your life. One of the big things I noticed during my financial turnaround is that as my debts went away and my savings started to build, my overall life felt less stressful. I didnt feel nearly as stressed out on a daily basis as I did when we were really financially struggling. This has only continued over the ensuing years. Our finances are one part of our life that doesnt worry us very much. The money you pick up from a financial challenge like this is a great start down that road to financial peace. If you succeed at this kind of challenge, use it as a starting point for a lasting life change rather than just a forgotten celebration. Second, right out of the box, challenges like this wont necessarily click with you; dont be afraid to modify it. Modifying and tweaking challenges like this to better suit your life is a great way to make the challenge more meaningful and useful to you. For example, with the 52-week challenge, I highly recommend doing the weeks out of order and simply challenging yourself to put aside as much as possible each week, trying to knock off one of the big numbers if you can and leaving the little ones for later weeks when money might be tighter. With the Starbucks challenge, consider using that approach for whatever small purchase you make frequently. If you buy a sandwich at a food truck near your workplace three times a week, pay with a $10 and use that change as the source of your challenge. If you stop by a bookstore once a week and buy a new book, pay with a $20 and put aside the change for that challenge. Tweak it to what you do. With the $5 challenge, you might make it the $1 challenge (save all single $1 bills you receive in change that you dont have earmarked for something else, like paying a toll) or the Hamilton Challenge (do it with $10 bills instead). The key is to find a way to make the challenge relevant to your life, which will make the challenge both more fun and much more likely to succeed. Third, and finally, dont use this type of challenge as an excuse to make other financial mistakes. Its easy to turn the $5 challenge into something like Oh, if I spend $12 here Ill probably get a $5 bill back in change which can boost my challenge! We're now looking at getting a second car as we will be working in different areas. My Grandma offered me her old Nissan Micra (1.3 ltr, K-reg) for us to have. I phoned up Quinn to get a quote for this car and they quoted 2,020!! I can't understand why it's so much more expensive, it's ridiculous! Will applying for medicaid affect the insurance I have now in any way?

I am 32 weeks pregnant and I am covered under my dad's insurance through Tricare. I remain eligible under his insurance until I am 23 and everything is full coverage. Primary and Secondary Health Insurance?

This has been a big complication for a few months, but back in October of 2008, I had a physical exam and my provider billed, what I assumed at the time, my primary insurance company (Horizon NJ Health). However, two years later, Horizon took back that money and my provider has been billing me for that physical back in 2008. I called Horizon and apparently they took back the money because I had another health insurance, and Horizon was no longer my primary. I had not known about my other health insurance company, Aetna student health care, since they never gave me any information or membership details, and I was automatically enrolled for it when I entered my university. When I contacted Aetna, they told me that they weren't the primary insurance company because they were just student health care. After several phone calls back and forth between Aetna and Horizon... I STILL haven't figured out who my primary insurance company is since they both claim to be the secondary insurance (and they seem to have endless reasons why the other is primary). I contacted my provider and asked them who they have listed as my primary, and they seem to be clueless about it too (when I spoke to the receptionist and asked, they kinda changed the topic). Girleen, the Irish teenage bootlegger gives as good as she gets in Martin McDonagh’s The Lonesome West

Cave Canem’s production of The Lonesome West at Pacific Theatre opens tonight.

The production of a new Martin McDonagh play is always cause for a celebration—at least, by fans of the Irish playwright.

McDonagh, whose work has been called “scabrous,” “morbid” and “depraved” by the press, tends to be a polarizing figure. Then again, critics are loving his new movie, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. (In a five-star review, the Guardian called it a “violent carnival of small-town America.”)

The Lonesome West (1997), which opens tonight (Oct 19) and runs until Nov. 11 at Pacific Theatre (1440 12th Ave. W) is the third in McDonagh’s trilogy of plays set in the Western Ireland town of Leenane. (The other two are The Beauty Queen of Leenane and A Skull in Connemara). In The Lonesome West, two brothers express grief over their father by more or less trying to kill each other.

The play is the first production from new local theatre company Cave Canem. We talked to Vancouver actor Paige Louter about her role as Girleen, the teenage bootlegger.

Inside Vancouver: Martin McDonagh is considered by some to be a very male playwright. Would you go along with that?

Paige Louter: Yes. He’s very masculine in his themes, and most of his characters are men.

He’s interested in violence and aggression, and a lot of things that we think of as stereotypically male. But he also writes really good female characters. I get to deliver some of the best insults in the show. And I get to be vulnerable in way some of the male characters don’t.

Girleen, my character is one of his more successful female roles. In his most recent play, there’s another teenage girl and I don’t think he wrote that one as well.

IV: Is it fair to say you get to deliver some of the best insults in an insult-filled show?

PL: Yes. Yes, I would definitely say that.

IV: Have you played anyone like Girleen before?

PL: Girleen is kind of unique in terms of what I’ve done before. The range of where she starts and where she ends up, the toughness and the vulnerability—I’ve done all of those things before, but to have those compressed into one character is an exciting challenge.

IV: How did being born and raised in Hamilton, Ontario prepare you for this play? Is it at all similar to the town where The Lonesome West is set?

PL: In some ways it (Leenane) is kind of representational of the kind of terrible people you can find anywhere. Hamilton certainly has its share of gritty, kind of horrible people.

IV: Is there a big Irish population there?

PL: Not particularly. I’ve found that there are a lot of Irish people in Vancouver. I lived in Ireland for a year. Anytime I told anyone I was moving to Vancouver, everyone seemed to have a cousin or friend living there.

IV: Did anything about living in Ireland prepare you to do this?

PL: Yeah. I think understanding a lot of the cultural references. Certainly, having the sound of the accent in my head really helped. And I got to intern with the company where The Lonesome West premiered. And I know the theatre where the show first went up. That definitely fed into my process, and preparation.

IV: One review mentioned of the play mentioned “expressive, deliberately goofball fight sequences.” Is that something that is part of this production?

PL: Yes. Most of the fighting takes place between the two brothers, Valene and Coleman. It’s kind of brutal but also very funny. It’s two grown men fighting over the pettiest things. You look at John (Voth) and Kenton (Klassen, who star as the brothers) and you know they couldn’t do real damage to each other if they actually wanted too. It’s always about something totally unimportant, like who gets a bag of chips. I love the fights in this show—they’re hilarious.

IV: Do you have a fight choreographer?

PL: Josh Reynolds is our fight choreographer. He’s blocked the scenes. I’m the show’s fight captain. We run before we do them and make sure everything’s safe.

IV: Another thing I’ve seen mentioned is the set, which is the brothers’ kitchen. Have you seen it yet?

PL: The set is already loaded in. It’s great to have it there, it totally informs how we feel about the space. (It’s very rural, west of Ireland. This is what this would look like if these two grown men lived here in squalor.

The Lonesome West runs at Pacific Theatre until Nov. 11. Tickets start are $ 36.50 ($ 20 on Wednesday) and are available at pacifictheatre.org.
