Thinking about how Ivan doesn’t seem to be teasing Till here. More of a, “Oh, yeah. That definition does fit you.”

Thinking about how genuinely sad and confused Ivan looks when Ivan punches him for this response, and walks away. The way that this wouldn’t be his reaction if provocation was his intention… and the way that, even still, his expression seems somewhat blank.

The way, in fact, that Ivan’s default expression as a child, in general, is a blank one. Even many of his smiles reading as not quite reaching his eyes.

The way he’s shown to study how to make himself smile, and make other expressions… (“Before Ivan goes to his morning class, he goes to the Anakt Garden Pond and carefully observes his own facial expressions. He usually doesn't show much emotion on his face, so it's very interesting to see him scrunch up his face or break into a smile like the other kids usually do.”)

… and how that leads perfectly into him, as an adult, having changed his default expression to that of a smile.

(Including when it’s not really appropriate for him to be grinning.) (Almost as if he still doesn’t quite grasp the social situations when he should smile. Just that he should smile more often.)

Ok, honestly, I'm a big fan of when people have MiziSua being the “I’m sorry we couldn’t be together in this life, but we will be in the next” and “We will find each other in every universe” vs. Ivan with IvanTill being like, “Thank you for tolerating me in this lifetime; if we ever get another chance, I hope you never have to meet me again.” or in reincarnation AUs where everyone is there but Ivan is just... not. As if he somehow made the conscious decision to not come back again, and despite not wanting to be a burden, he has left Till feeling like something important is forever missing by his side.

I keep thinking about ivan being called childish

because he really is. his way of unilaterally deciding how till feels about him, that he has no chance before he even tries, is undeniably childish

considering the environment they’re in what else can you expect, but still

what exactly ivan does in round 6… the kiss is probably something between because it was his last chance to express these feelings (no matter how shallow they are, they're his) and because it was the most effective way to force himself to be seen in till’s gaze and choking till is obviously to throw the competition…

but why does he keep doing that after confirming their scores? making sure till can’t speak or even look at him… even while literally getting shot at ivan doesn’t let go

he just refuses to give till a chance to respond to his feelings, to the literal last moment of his life

I doubt rejection scares him much when he’s already decided till doesn’t care about him at all… but imagine. the possibility that he’s not rejected? that till cares about him in any way? that if ivan had done something differently, maybe he could’ve gotten some of what he so desperately wanted?

of course that possibility doesn’t exist. there’s no way. ivan “knows” that.

…but better to never allow that chance anyway

Did he write Black Sorrow thinking it could have been his final showdown with Till?

Did he write it before the lineup was announced? Did he take account of every possible outcome? Was this line Black Sorrow’s version of “Face to face we dance”?

He really did all he could to convey his feelings for Till

the course of ivans life is locked in by sua and i think he understands that a little

its ivan who will follow till, its till who will follow mizi, and its mizi who will follow sua (and sua follows mizi too ofc)

just round and around, they go in a circle till theyre picked off for slaughter

mizi doesnt know that, but sua does!!! sua does!!!!

mizi is unaware of the threat thats coming her way, so its up to sua to leave. she doesnt. theyre stuck. when sua follows mizi, ivan sees a priest digging her grave.

my view of ivan sua is very much "ivan is willing to break the system for till, but till wont follow him"

"ivan watches as sua sacrifices herself for mizi within the system"

"ivan is envious because the person she loves is willing to follow her anywhere but the best she can do is die"

i think it says a lot about suas passive suicidal ideation

once again straight yappin so Ivan stayed at the 'cafeteria' just to blatantly stare at Till while he ate that plain white rice for 30 minutes not even bothering to be a little more normal and take up that very empty seat next to Till (that was probably there because he's the only person that sits next to till unironically) what other weird shit does this guy do

so the finals huh. guy with nothing to lose vs guy who has recently lost everything. void vs grief. numbness vs pain. what kind of survivor can sing the song after all that death and damage? what kind of angel will be left to sing humanity through the dark?

Ivan and the wagyein always reminded me of Hades and Cerberus. The wagyein as Cerberus for obvious reasons (dog-like, multiple heads, a "guard" or "watchdog" for a dangerous area) and Ivan as Hades (association with death and darkness) who has a special connection with Cerberus.

This is why it absolutely thrills me to find out that the area in which Guardian Unsha (and by extension, Ivan) resides is known as the "underworld".

Something interesting about the Alien Stage supplementary material is that the humans don’t know what kissing actually is, but it’s in the human characters’ instinct to show love through physical touch.

Luka is shown sucking on Hyuna’s forehead, and is implied to do this somewhat regularly. And, though many English translations use the word “kiss”, what Ivan says actually translates to “lips to lips”. That’s why he says he wants to do it because “everyone is doing it” — it’s not an established norm. But it feels ‘right’ or ‘natural’ to him, when he sees other humans kissing, to want to do it with Till.

honestly I don’t see till hallucinating mizi and/or ivan in round 7 because I believe that besides her grief, mizi saw sua in luka because luka inherently resembles sua much more than any other alnst character so he was able to perfectly provoke her in that way. like everyone loves to point out sua and ivan parallels but sua and luka parallels are being shoved right into our faces. their birthdays being one day apart, them covering each other’s respective songs, how they both acted when they were children, their feelings of hopelessness and indifference to everything that leads to obedience etc.

just like luka, sua has so much darkness locked inside of herself and away from mizi, it’s so apparent in the mizisua short animation, in sweet dream’s lyrics and in most of sua’s illustrations where mizi isn’t shown. sua’s also quite possessive and gets jealous, it’s not as excessive as luka but it’s there and intended.

it’s clear that sua could’ve ended up just like him but didn’t because of how different their loved ones impacted them.
