This is one of my most important tips. Plan your meals, exercise and self-care ahead of time. You are bound to make destructive food choices when your hunger drives your food choices as you rush home from work and eat anything you can find. Exercise and self-care will be pushed aside if you don’t assign time for this. Plan and thrive!
De-stress.
We all lead busy and stressful lives. The way we approach the stress can make all the difference. Healthy women have learned coping mechanisms (like meditation, yoga or deep breathing) to take on less stress, as well as to effectively manage and have a positive perspective on the stress they do have. Stress triggers the production of cortisol in our bodies, which wreaks havoc on our hormonal system and PCOS symptoms and gives you belly fat! Who needs that?!
Seek a support Group.
Studies show that you are more likely to stick with a lifestyle change if you have a supportive community. First, educate your loved ones so that they can offer support as you make important changes. Next, find a community of like-minded women that will help cheer you on now and in the future, whether they’re online or in person (or both!). You may even want to buddy up with a walking or grocery shopping partner with whom you can share your journey.
Make time for self-care.
The need for self-care is the fine line between your sanity insanity. Taking care of your mind, body and spirit is not selfish. You are more able to give your friends, family and co-workers your whole self when you have taken the time to refresh. Self-care means eating well and exercising, but just as importantly, it means taking a few minutes to yourself every day to recenter and relax. You may choose to meditate, take an Epsom salt bath or write in a journal. Whatever you choose, give yourself over to the experience wholly and see the difference it makes in your life.
Be kind to yourself.
Rome wasn’t built in a day. The diet and lifestyle changes will improve your quality of life more than you could have imagined, but you have to be kind to yourself while you do it. Take baby steps and eliminate/change one thing at a time. If you make a mistake, remember that you are only one choice away from being back on track. Try to spend a little time each day doing something just for you. You must be your own top priority.
Distract The Mind
Sometimes doing all of the above, threw me so much deeper into my own mind, it was simply too much. I was overanalysing and self-diagnosising every statement, action and step I took. In these moments, I just had to do things that normalised my nervous system again and distracted my mind from over thinking! Whether that was reading a book, getting to a class, going to the movies, enjoying a walk, listening to podcasts or cooking...once I focused my mind on something other than myself, I was able to regulate my nervous system and bring back down the levels of anxiety or emotional overwhelm I was experiencing.

Menstrual Dysfunction
I’ve said it once and I will say it again, hormones, like a family, function and dysfunction together….so what happens when our endocrine and adrenal hormones dysfunction together, you guessed right, issues with your monthly flow (and I’m not just talking about your yoga flow).
Two of the most common reasons that women have irregular periods (or menstrual dysfunction) are polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), and hypothalamic amenorrhea.
Polycystic ovarian syndrome is a condition in which the ovaries generally are making too much testosterone compared to estrogen and progesterone. It can cause irregular periods, acne and facial hair (hirsutism). PCOS affects up to 1 in 10 women.
Amenorrhea is the Latin word for lack of periods. Hypothalamic amenorrhea simply means you are not getting your periods because of your hypothalamus (the brain’s hormone control center). It’s not that there is anything wrong with your hypothalamus exactly, but rather, it is having an altered response and reaction to stress (and its many forms). It has stopped producing a hormone required for menstruation, such as GnRH and progesterone, and has favored the production of cortisol. This can happen in response to things like emotional stress, or not eating enough, over-exercising, repetitive bouts of dieting, excessive environmental estrogens and of course stress overload.
Promoting the natural detoxification of excessive estrogens relies heavily on your gut health and your liver health …so maintaining healthy intestinal bacteria and liver cell health (lymphatic system health) is a must!
Hormonal imbalances are generally always rooted in one or more of the following issues”
-Abnormalities in blood sugar regulation
-HPA axis dysfunction (adrenal fatigue, which is overused and over simplified and just being a general super spaz)
-Gut disorders (SIBO, h. pylori, dysbiosis in general)
-Poor liver function health and issues with detoxification pathways (which can be from long term birth control use, excessive environmental estrogens, stress, low stomach acid and you know just living life)
Diet
Inadequate calorie and carbohydrate intake might be the most common contributor to a dysfunctional menstrual cycle, which is quite common in us super-spaz, type A, must be perfect in every aspect of our lives women.
Calorie intake and energy balance are the most important factors affecting the development of hypothalamic amenorrhea (or missing your period for extended periods of time due to dysregulation of the hypothalamus). In fact, calorie intake is an even greater predictor of menstrual cycle function than a woman’s body fat percentage. Consistent dietary restriction or continually reducing calorie intake (in order to look like the rest of the sad insta-hoes) is a risk factor for menstrual cycle disturbances. Now add over-exercising to this, combined with under-eating…you have a hormonal shit show brewing!
Body Fat
You should also know that there is an ideal body fat percentage that is needed for fertility and ovulation, so being “super shredded” or lean might look cool, but your hormones are going to greatly disagree, and they are going to show their displeasure with you through anovulation, or stopping your period. An ideal body fat percent should be at least 23%, with 16-30% being ideal; If you are around 12% or lower you absolutely are going to need to gain some good fat back (load up on the extra guac, even if it costs more, #TREATYOSELF).
Responsible Exercise
You also need to exercise accordingly. Developing an ideal ratio of working out and working in (yes this includes deep breathing, long walks, nature walks, mellow time, meditation, Pilates and you know it good old yoga) is a must for hormone regulation, especially if your HPA axis is the root cause of dysfunction. You need to avoid over-exercising and certainly avoid exercise that is going to overly stress the body (a little thing we know as over- exertion). So unfortunately boot-camp/crossfit/HIIT training needs to grab some bench for a while. You need to focus on low stress exercises to help regulate hormone function. This also includes cutting out any crap pre-workouts or energy type drinks that might help you “push through” that workout that you really should be skipping, because your body needs a rest, and it is telling you so by making you extremely tired …for fuck sake listen to your body!
Good Old Stress
Stress of course is going to affect your menstrual cycle….hell it affects everything else in the body…and your body will ALWAYS chose survival over procreation. Chronic stress can actually change your hormonal profile and have long term effects on your menstrual cycle and ovary function. Stress actually impairs the ovarian cycle through activation of the HPA axis, which affects how much estrogen and progesterone your ovaries actually produce.
When we see many women who are experiencing “adrenal fatigue” they will also have low libido (no sex for your boo), worsened PMS symptoms, weight gain (especially around the thighs/hips/belly) and low energy overall, which is generally related to the impact of chronic stress and HPA axis activation, which affects ALL hormone balance in the body.
Much of the modern research shows that women who are under chronic stress have a higher risk for menstrual abnormalities and infertility. Now if you are on the fence about having kids (which trust me every time I travel for work I swear off children more and more) you should still have healthy ovulation cycles, as this determines the health of your eggs.  
So to all of my super-spazz bad ass boss-babes who don’t exactly have a handle on managing stress levels (even if you remain cool as cucumber externally) you are going to need to chill the fuck out! Get out in nature, practice grounding and gratitude, practice yoga or Pilates, play outside (hike, paddle-board, walk, sit in the sand) or maybe just call your best friend, laugh at some IG memes or listen to a podcast (or hell go back and read my older blog posts).
Gut Health
It should come as no surprise that I am placing importance on gut health, but a healthy digestive system is a must for essentially every aspect of your health! Hormone balance and gut function go together like lamb and meatballs (if you do not understand this movie reference we likely can’t be friends). You eliminate excess hormones through your bowel movements and much research is showing that having leaky gut or imbalances in your microflora actually activates your immune system, which can increase androgen levels and insulin (issues if you have PCOS). Surprise surprise, over activation of the immune system also interferes with ovarian follicle development (we want healthy ovaries, because this means we have healthy eggs).
You are going to want to focus on not only re-balancing your gut flora, this means eating more probiotic rich foods, looking into a strain specific probiotic protocol, cutting out sugar, reducing stress and restoring pH levels.
Extra Credit: You can earn some bonus points if you can get some more sleep as well! This will not only benefit your gut health (as your gut makes roughly 70% of the melatonin in your body) but also your menstrual cycle.
Supplement Smartly
I could write an entire post on supplements to support female hormone balance (and I likely will) but taking some of the basics can at least help you get on track with hormone balance until you decided to work with a functional practitioner or nutritionist (like myself or I have many educated and well qualified colleagues I can refer you to).
Vitamin D, Essential Fatty Acids, B Vitamins, Probiotics and Adaptogens should be the foundation for your hormonal health arsenal.
Look Outside of Your Food for Toxic Load
So this means you are going to have to start assessing external and environmental toxins. Look at your deodorant, your toothpaste, your cleaning supplies, your makeup, shampoos, creams, serums…ALL OF IT (this is why I prefer to be on the #hotmessexpress train). Also make sure you aren’t using plastic water-bottles and Tupperware, non-stick pans, fake sprays (Pam) and even the water you are drinking. Don’t forget to look at your supplements “other ingredients” list (and yes this includes protein powders) to see some additional hormone disrupting ingredients you might be ingesting.
