Propaganda for CAT:

"You like jazz? Jazz is chaos within order. Got to love the whole band. Vibraphone, saxophone, trumpet, flute, piano, guitar, drums, bass… Go, rhythm section, go! The song sounds tender at times and aggressive at others as different instruments pop up at different times. Sometimes they follow Kazui’s voice (“follow the king of the masquerade”). Sometimes they get to be the focus. You have the chill piano one moment and the screaming guitar in the next.

You’ve got a lovely “jingle” (“Lie until it gets better…”) which occurs at the beginning, middle, and end. It fits the “newspaper ad” style of the video really well. Also at the very end, there’s one more line that gives the jingle an upward contour, giving a sense of finality. “Until you can meet the king of the masquerade.” You’re there now.

The two verses start off differently before they take on a similar melody. It feels like Kazui is talking to a different person in each verse.

The chorus is a beautiful façade the first time and a sinister truth the second time.

The opening for solos shows that this jazz song means business. I love how the saxophone and trumpet especially get in your face. And with the tacet on vocals, the walking bass really shines if you lend it your ear.

And the smoke break! Silence is golden. Glass click. Lighter. Huff.

As always, Kazui’s voice is super deep. He hits even lower notes this time around. He’s a fifth lower than the next lowest singers (Haruka and Shidou)."

FIRST OF ALL the vocals????? BEAUTIFUL. His va put his whole pussy into this song and you can tell!! The way he sings the chorus is so damn addicting I'm so in love with him. His voice is more or less stable throughout the entire thing until the final chorus but you can hear the emotion peaking out which fits perfectly with Kazui keeping everything hidden. The way his voice turns into a sort of whisper during "all the things I wanna do that I can't say outloud"??? The way his voice starts trembling during "this feeling it's yearning to be satisfied"???? The way his voice turns into a sort of whisper AND starts trembling during "hey, if I said I liked-liked you, what would you?"?????? HEAVENLY! You can really feel how afraid Kazui is under his disguise and my heart breaks a little everytime I listen. Not to mention how absolutely powerful his voice gets at the climax!!!!!! It's insane!!!!!!! It's genius!!!!!! It makes me wild makes me crazy makes me eat my walls!!!!!!!!!!

THE SMOKE BREAK?????? What other song has something as powerful as that huh???? This isn't just a song produced by the milgram machine using his memories, this is HIS song and he is OWNING IT! The music builds up so much and gets so intense right before it, I can literally feel myself get tense and starting holding my breath right before he takes the break and everything relaxs… it's not just a break for him, but a break for the viewer. The song is spiralling out of control just like his life and his lies and he has no choice but to put it to a quick stop before its too much to handle.

THE IMAGERY IS WILD!!!!! He's a magician!!! Little magic guy!!!! Using tricks and lies to amaze and captivate the people around him! Trying desperately to magic his own feelings into something else! But it's all fake! It's all tricks and no matter how hard he tries he can never actually change himself into what he wants! But he's trying to convince himself the same way he's convinced his audience!! And when you're watching a magic act, are you there for the magician themself or are you there to watch the show?? The people in his life only cared for him when he performed for them, but they didn't give a drop of love to who he was a person! ALSO the transformation of the wedding ring to a cigarette to the dove at the end??? Makes me wild every single time! Right infront of his wife, he showed her that their marriage was something unhealthy for him that was slowly killing him from the inside. AND THEN he uses it to harm himself???? And then he turns that cigarette into a dove- a representation of love and literally TEARS INTO IT. He tears his marriage apart with his mouth!!! AKA HIS WORDS. makes me wild. Also fun fact Kazui says he started smoking because when he was younger it was "just natural for everyone to smoke" and that lines up with his reasons for marriage perfectly.

Kazui looks really hot in it. You should vote for Cat because Kazui is insanely attractive. What other reason do you need huh? Hot gay middle aged man.

Propaganda for THE PURGE MARCH:

"Despite the shorter length, the Purge March has several distinct sections in its structure.

It starts with a rolloff, and then… they don’t follow it. Amane isn’t here to follow the beat.

There’s the spoken-word intro and the upbeat first verse listing the tenets. The prechorus (“dou shiyou mo nai…”) has an amen break. The most-sampled four-bar drum beat. Well, there’s half of it. Is it supposed to mean something? Can I get an amen?

The chorus is so, so cheerful… unless you’re actually listening to the lyrics (“I’ll crush your throat too”) or watching the video. And it’s super catchy. 

The second part of the verse dials things back. Now we’re in reality. This is how Amane breaks her tenets. All the while, those tenets are spoken into both ears over the singing. Get some good headphones. She sounds different in each ear.

The music picks up again with the amen break as Amane happily strolls back home, and then-

The somber second chorus, with Amane’s lower singing voice and mournful spoken words, leads into the final chorus, with new lyrics and a more forceful tone. The once-meaningless chanting now has real words. “You’re sorry? I don’t care! Please go ahead and die already.” You can hear Amane’s anger despite the cheerful melody. She harmonizes in the final phrase, as if to say “we’re in this together, me and my little color guard troop.” And finally, it’s just her. Speaking. "Oboetemasuka?" Accompanied by only a single drum.

She is both Amane Momose and not. She upholds the doctrines that she was raised with, but she can’t."

"Purge March is geniunaly one of my favorite pieces of fiction both in and out of the context of trauma. Its fantastically directed and composed. The batton twirling is spetacular and energetic, the set and character design of Amane conveys a lot about the world she’s in and the story she’s telling. Purge March contextulizes a lot of Magic in both expected and unexpected ways (insert the entire cat symbolism thesis here) Purge March casts Amane in the role of a scary child. The glowing eyes, the framing of Amane as Above the viewer, the brutality and catharsis of it all. It seems tailored made to make you Scared of her. It’s a continuation of the cycle of abuse that we the audience repeated in T1 when we gave her that verdict. A red flashing warning sign about the Inhumanity and Monsterous qualities of Amane Momose. But Amane as a monster is fufilling and freeing. Again, its deeply cathartic. I would write more if I wasnt so sleepy at the moment but its just some Fantastic work overall. Purge March is also just fantasitic vocally and also hids electricity sounds in the instrumental which I think is evil and awesome."

-The beginning where it sounds like a propaganda TV show… really shows just how far Amane’s thinking is rooted in her cult and how that’s shaped her perception.

-The LYRICS. They work so well but it’s also creepy AF considering it’s a child who’s singing it.

-“So there is no second time, I’ll give back the judgment that you gave to me!”

-The overlapping part… gives me chills everytime.

-Building off the last point, the last “I’ll crush your throat too.” Ouch.

-“Remember MY cries, MY repents, MY words of “I’m sorry” that I said to you?”

-The song also does a great job of showing how much the guilty verdict messed with her.

1. Escanor ( I can't even put into words how much I loved his introduction. First showing us à tiny timid man then showing said tiny timid man turn into a huge buff monster that just casually beats up Melascula and Galand, the same two beasts that gave both Ban ad Meliodas a hard time. " I stand at the pinnacle of all races-" I MISS HIM SO MUCH HE WAS SUCH A BADASS )

2. King ( his entrance was so sudden and so dramatic, randomly spawning behind ban and stabbing him with chastiefol, grinning maliciously at his supposed companion, we were all shook as fuck lets be fr . Chefs kiss you will always be iconic

3. Ban ( the guards whispering about how they tried to execute him like 30 times, showing Ban pierced by metal rods and bound and chained up . The ominous music being harmonised with Ban's morbid humming showing us how much he doesn't give a fuck...perfect intro )

I'm tying Meli and Ban cause I loved their intros the same amount but for different reasons . Van for the more ominous and daunting reveal and Meliodas for the more wholesome and exciting one .

Meliodas ( I absolutely loved his reveal, him effortlessly beating up Twigo, Elisabeth staring in shock, him telling her he's not a member of the sds but their " CAPTAIN " go off my short king then him telling her to join him on his adventure, with the uplifting music and her smiling widely and nodding and following him on mama hawk.... oh fuck I am getting so nostalgic rn, back when it was hawk meli and eli, my roman empire frr .

5. Merlin ( incredibleeeee, I love it when she taught that rat vivian a lesson and when she pulled of her cloak it was giving " its britany bitch" sorry sorry sorrry . Plus with the hand I the waist, the flowy hair, the smug smile, she knew she was serving .

Friday was date night, Leo had decided a little after the beginning of your relationship, you'd dress up nicely, he'd meet you at your door, sometimes he'd bring flowers or candy and you both would fake a posh accent while at it before he portaled you to your destiny.

Wether the destiny was run of the mill pizza in the hidden city or the lair's couch to watch a movie, date nights were always special for the two of you.

The first of those dates that you had you worried that he was trying too hard to please you, always going above and beyond to do so.

You realized a while before you even started dating that Leo, as arrogant and confident as he seemed was secretly insecure and you didn't want him to feel that way in your relationship.

So you talked about it, and Leo seemed to relax with you, he was still romantic, it was natural to him, but he was perfectly fine with a date being just you and him cuddling while you did your own thing instead of trying hard to impress you, he was comfortable with you, he felt safe.

Today was mostly a lazy day, so you both were going to get pick up from run off the mill and then crash on his bed to read comics.

So you grabbed a long soft sweater that wouldn't itch when you cuddled and leggings, with fluffy socks under your sneakers.

Hearing his telltale knock at your door you smiled wide at seeing your boyfriend waiting there for you with a lazy smile and wearing a very familiar black hoodie.

You raised an eyebrow looking at him suspiciously "Is that my hoodie?" Leo scoffed feigning being offended.

"What? No greeting to your handsome boyfriend? No kiss? Just accusing me of stealing first thing." You snort, but he continues "This is just a generic hoodie I had in my closet, thanks."

His chuckle follows you both as he makes a portal and you step through it ending up at the front desk of the pizzeria.

Señor Hueso looks at both of you and rolls his eyes "Ah Pepino and his novia, given what you're wearing I'm hoping you'll be leaving soon?"

"Oh we'd love to stay Señor Hueso, I'm sure you'll miss us but alas! It's lazy night at the lair so two of your best pizzas señor! And another one for Donnie I guess" Leo ended dismissively before continuing with the order.

While he did so you looked around always fascinated by the different type of yokai around when you noticed a particular yokai walking your way.

The first thing you noticed was that he was tall and full of feathers, with red markings and a long beak, you remember reading about Tengu's, a japanese yokai that usually had a bird form, it seemed to fit his characteristics.

You were so busy trying to figure that out you didn't notice your boyfriend glancing up at the yokai and paling.

"Leo! I see you haven't changed a bit, still getting pizza every chance you get" The yokai grinned and Leo squeezed your hand.

"Yeah, well you haven't changed either Raku" The yokai rolled his eyes not losing the grin.

"So, are you going to introduce me to your friend?" The yokai, Raku, you now knew, asked offering his hand to you "Sorry for his lack of manners, I'm Raku, Leo and I used to be very close"

You offered him your hand for a shake noticing how uncomfortable Leo seemed and disliking the way this guy spoke from the get go "He was probably surprised to see a familiar face" You told him your name and made sure to add "I'm Leo's girlfriend."

Raku seemed surprised looking between both of you with a funny grin "Girlfriend, really? I thought you were gay?" He directed at Leo who sported an uneasy smile up until that point, a frown starting to form on his face.

"I told you I was pan" He said and the tengu rolled his eyes.

"Just say you're bi Leo, I get it, you swing both ways" Leo's fake smile was disappearing and yours had already left quite a bit ago, you thought tengu were bird yokai, not rats.

You internally apologized to Splinter for that last thought, but got a little snarky "So, you are?"

"Leo never told you about me?" He asked "Ah well, we didn't end in the best terms but it's all passed, right Lee? I'm his ex-boyfriend."

You couldn't deny the bitter feeling as you heard that, not because you were jealous of this guy, but because just a couple minutes with him already gave you a glimpse of how he'd treated Leo during their relationship.

"Hm, really? No I hadn't heard of you at all" you answered with an innocent smile, reveling on how his faltered for a second.

"But enough of that, going back to the original topic" Raku changed the subject "You know, eating pizza all the time can't be good for a ninja Leo, and I'm sure I saw you get here via portal, 's not gonna help losing all those calories."

Leo winced but put on a mask of disinterest, before he could answer though Raku continued "Also, what's up with that ratty hoodie? You are going out like this? Gee, you really let yourself go once we ended our relationship."

You didn't care anymore, you were gonna snap "Actually that's my hoodie" You smiled "It was too big for me, but Leo fills it up just right with his muscles, it used to fit better but now I fear one day it's gonna snap from the biceps" You had never spoken like that, Leo gaped wide at you and Raku seemed to frown at your words.

A waiter arrived at that very moment with your three pizzas and Raku looked like they were proving a point "not gon' keep those muscles long like these, gee, are you both sharing them or...?"

"Oi, just back off Raku" Leo spoke placing an arm around your shoulders and Raku rolled his eyes.

"Oh don't be so dramatic Leo, I was just joking around."

You chuckled, your hand pulling your boyfriend closer by the waist as you leaned and looked up at the offending yokai in feigned amusement.

"Sorry, I was trying to figure out the kind of yokai you are, I think I finally did, with the way you spew out bullshit and how it reeks, you're an Akaname right?"

Raku blushed embarrassed and a couple chuckles could be heard from behind him, he glared at you and scoffed "Hope you enjoy sloppy seconds, ugh humans" with not much left to say he stormed off.

You still yelled "Did I mispronounce the name? Sorry Akaname-san!" a couple people turned to Raku with funny grins as he rushed his steps.

You sighed feeling Leo slouch slightly, relieved the interaction ended, taking the pizzas and paying you turned to prompt him into opening a portal.

He did and you both appeared on his room, it was quiet for a moment before Leo looked back at you.

He looked so vulnerable, so you left the pizza on his night stand and pulled him by the hand towards his bed, laying back on it with him on your side.

"Thank you" He spoke after a couple minutes, you traced shapes on his plastron with your fingers, looking up at him with an inquiring gaze, giving him the chance to search for the words he wanted "for standing up for me, for...making me feel safe" there was a second of hesitation before he continued "For making me feel like I'm enough."

"You are" you stated firmly "You're more than enough Leo, and nothing Raku said is true, those kind of assholes just want to make their partner insecure, want to steal their freedom from them, geez Leo, we were there for just a moment and he gaslighted you as soon as he could, you have terrible taste in men."

Leo leaned in and kissed your forehead softly, a small chuckle leaving his lips while his hand reached up to intertwine with yours over his plastron "I know, ever since we started dating you made that clear to me, with him I always felt like I had to try too hard, and you've been clear since the beginning that I just have to be me with you" he smiled.

You both stayed like that, sharing small kisses and reveling in the comfort of the other for a bit longer before he spoke again "But what was that thing you called him? Akaname?" He questioned curiously and you chuckled.

You grin was mischievous "It's a yokai that eats the filth and scum in bathrooms" Leo's laugh was really loud after that, holding his stomach as he did and making you laugh too.

"Gosh, I love you so much" He said with bright eyes and you kissed him, the words 'me too' unsaid but lingering in the air.

Rewatching Dead Boy Detectives already and just have to gush again about episode 7.

Spoilers under the cut:

The flashback scene to Edwin and Charles first meeting (my most beloved sequence on this show). The song playing so softly in the background is Under the Milky Way by the Church. I fucking love this song so much. Like, this sequence would be amazing anyway, but the music just elevates it so much. It's a song that always makes me ache and yearn, so its placement here is just *chefs kiss*.

This is something they do throughout the series that I adore. The music is so spot on and they weave it in so well. Burning by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs at the end of the episode as well: chills. Loved it. Brilliant and foreboding. And I am never going to be able to listen to Owner of a Lonely Heart by Yes the same way again.

I already have a fanvid in the works, but I'm sure I can rustle up another one to Under the Milky Way as well soon enough.

Zelda Main Theme/Title screen tier list

before we begin, this is my own opinion and preference in music! we all have different taste, so dont let mine invalidate yours!

im putting explinations for my choices below the cut, so if you wanna hear me yap about zelda music nows your chance

Triforce Heros: 10/10 i absolutely ADORE the triforce heros sound track! (actually listening to it as I type this) its such an underappreciated title (being the "bootleg" four swords lol) but has such good composition its hard not to love it. its similar to botw's rito songs in which acordians are found in a lot of the tracks- anyway back to the topic of the main theme: its great. a refreshing change from the main zelda theme (as was trend with the DS games) and has a lot of character to it. high energy too!! exactly what i want to hear! a straight vibe that id wait to start the game just to listen a little longer

Spirit Tracks: i think we all know why this is 10/10 spirit tracks is another one of those underrated titles, especially for its music! i love how the melody (extremely catchy by the way) is played by a flute here, corresponding to the instrument you get in game :) it feels like im about to embark on an epic cross country ride

Wind Waker: even without knowing the plot of the game it feels like a sailor tune that would be played at dinner on a ship. its simple, and cutesy like the games art style, but fun and catchy too! a classic, one that really gets you into that sea fairing mood

TOTK: The only reason this one isn't higher is because I don't like that beginning bit with all the weird whisper singing. it fits the game really well! its just not my favorite sound in the world, but the melody hits HARD and really plays with the emotion of the scene that accompanies it in game. its high energy, but not in the same way triforce heros was, rather in an epic way rather than bouncy (if that makes sense?) its composed SO well, AND THAT BIT WITH THE SMALL BIRST OF PICCOLO??? chefs kiss. favorite part. not to mention the small zelda's lullaby motif at the end?? THE BOTW MOTIF??????

Skyward Sword: ballad of the goddess is genuinely just SUCH a good song, and the way its composed for the main theme gets you in all the right ways. the deep brass makes it very dramatic, especially with the drums it uses (love me some boomy drums). I love the woodwinds playing with the brass too! scratches the itch just right

BOTW: another great theme! it manages to change up the format a bit, but still keeps that dramatic vibe a zelda theme should have (for the more serious games, I mean, triforce heros doesnt count-) the acordian returns!! the melody! oh my god the melody!!!! its definitely a breath of fresh air (hehe get it?) it manages to encapsulate what a plesant breeze blowing against your face feels like somehow, and im living for it. i love the use of the dragon instruments after the pause! it feels like all the different cultures of botw hyrule has been rolled into this song with the instruments and all that

hyrule warriors: bet you weren't expecting that one, huh? its the only semi-traditional zelda theme in the top tier, and why? im a bitch for motifs, okay? I wasn't diging it at first, because it just sounded like a recomp of the classic zelda theme just really damn epic, but then it hit me with that tiny twilight princess motif and I knew I was in for a ride. THE BALLAD OF THE GODDESS MOTIF GAVE ME CHILLS i was not expecting it at ALL! and tHEN IT TRANSITIONED INTO HYRULE FIELD FROM TP??? AND THEN IT DOES IT AGAIN LATER IN THE SONG? i love you hyrule warriors NOT TO MENTION THE OTHER MOTIFS IT SHOVES IN THERE?? OOT?? MORE TP????? i am unapologetically a motif lover and i will stand by my decision

Minish Cap: i was ranking the track "story" since the intro screen was just 8 seconds and not really a song. i love how peaceful it sounds, and really befitting for a legend. ironically, it reminds me of The Legend from deltarune in a way. the whole song feels like an exposition, and personally one of my favorites which is why it ranked so high

Age of Calamity: ah, hyrule warriors' more popular, edgy, younger sibling. i wont lie to you, the melody is killer! and i love how it goes from eriee to epic final battle-esk music half way through. it feels like a final stand, and my GOD is it good

Twilight Princess: its so empty and woeful sounding, yet oh so full of hope and light i can't help but love it. its so pretty, so SO pretty. it does so much with so little and thats one of the things i love about it. i think the best compliment you can recieve is "you look the way the twilight princess main theme sounds" plus the wolf howl at the end is so funny

Ocarina of Time: i love that OOT makes the ocarina the main melody player and started the trend of the main game instrument being featured in the title/main theme. this one is pretty in a different way than twilight princess, this one is peaceful which is so misleading from the actual game story that i love it even more

Links Awakening (2019 Switch Remake): I separated this one from LADX because its VERY different from the original opening. Obviously, this one isnt retro music and that kind of adds to it, but its also the different beginning bit that sets it apart. the small mabe village motif before the actual zelda theme plays? love it. i really liked how they composed this version with all the different koholint instruments, it was like giving the song a new coat of paint. i love the classic zelda theme, but once you hear it so many ways it can get a little old, so it was great to see them do it like this :)

Majora's Mask: this is really only ranked so high because clock town is an absolute killer song, and I listen to it on loop. the only other reason is because that sharp turn at the end? my god its so disruptive but so good at the same time. the way the background cello gets intruppted by an ominous bass that grows louder, and how the clock town melody abruptly stops? such an amazing and indirect way forebode the dark theming of the story. both MM and OOT have such peaceful themes for their story lines, its good to see mm actually show that in the theme music

The Legend of Zelda: a classic, and what started it all. its simplistic with a great, strong melody, and i like how its paced a lot slower than most of the other games. that opening bit and the transition with the bassline is my favorite part.

Four Swords Adventure: this was another one I wasn't digging at first, but once you got into the meat of the song it was really nice. It starts as one melody, but gains a trumpet echo and a violin. its somehow chaotic but cohesive? i like how that reflects on the game

Oracle of Ages/ Seasons: OOA/S has nearly the same exact theme as LADX and four swords, only composed slightly differently. It keeps things simple, yet its very effective and plesant to listen to. a bouncy rendition of the main loz theme, just like FS and LADX. the only reason this one is ranked higher is because i liked the lower tone of the ooa/s rendition compared to LADX

Four Swords: im going to be honest, the retro sounding bassline with what i think is a snare? it felt a little strange, but i liked the little bits of the higher sounds acompanying the melody here with it. it felt like it was trying to be grand, but didn't quite hit what it was aiming for all the way. it was the beginning that through me off, really-

Links Awakening DX: simple, effective, yet a little too simple compared to the previous two since its the same rendition just with different make ups (if thats the right term) i know it was literally the 4th game to come from the series, but the original zelda theme felt like it had a bit more going on. still a good rendition of the main theme though! i like its bounciness

A Link to the Past: iconic. but, this was difficult to categorize since theres not much of a title theme? theres the selection screen music, but that became the fairy theme so i dont know if that counts either? either way its an 18 second clip or the fairy theme, which both are good, but just not really a show stopper (dont come at me alttp fans i dont mean it like that!! spare me!! mercy!!!!)

Zelda II: The Adventure of Link: why are you so LOUD holy cow- i like the theme, its pretty, but its short so it gets repetative if ykwim. i like the part with what im assuming is supposed to be some sort of bassline :) its my favorite part

Phantom Hourglass: i know its a wind waker sequal and i guess it makes sense, but just reusing the great sea music and changing up a part slightly felt kind of lazy to me? i do like the parts they added though! i think they're great sounding! but still feels a little lazy :(

A Link Between Worlds: I know what you may be thinking: "why is it so low? you LOVE albw" and to that I have to say, you know me so well, dear reader. You will also know, that just like the game its made after, there isnt really a title/main theme. the intro bit is about the same length as alttp so it gives you little to work with in terms of song. plus after the opening bit, it just kinda repeates the same few notes. going through the playlist i was kind of disappointed getting to albw, because at least alttp had selection music. this game has some of my favorite tracks to come from the series in it too so the intro being as it was (outside of a music standpoint, the intro is absolutely epic, don't get me wrong) i was just sad

I have a full playlist of songs I use for both bopping along to when I'm out and about, or doing something be it art, gaming, or what have you. Cherri's Assault is just one of those songs that has the right energy, starting slow and building up to being the exact level of bouncy I enjoy. Paranoid DJ is just one of a host of brilliant artists I absolutely adore for their fan musics and original works too.

Currently watching: Just finished both Nimona and the latest season of Dragon Prince. Stars above I loved Nimona, so so SO much! The memes out there, (especially one I shared from @wishingstarinajar ) are so right, Baltizar's sad kitty face throughout is everything. PLEASE go watch the movie the animation, the voice acting, everything was so GOOD. Dragon Prince is still a lovely story and it feels like they've finally dealt with the janky animation, it didn't look nearly as jittery as is used to, still a little quick but not jittery. Dragon designs are still top teir and the humour is brilliant.

Oh and I also have been binge watching Aavak and Lady Shelab's playthroughs of 7 days to Die, I admit it, I'm a huge schadenfreude fan. I love watching Markiplier or Wanderbot in scary situations (Wander's little laughing "Aaah!" as he runs away from spiders in Grounded, looking back at the spiders then run away again laughing and saying "Guys, help!" always gets a giggle). But Aavak and Shelab are so enjoyable and calming, I've watched some of Aavak's playthroughs for very chill building games to fall asleep to a few times. Shelab gets a little upset from time to time when things go wrong but Aavak is so gentle and patient when he reassures her its lovely to hear, espeically as a Youtuber couple who both do their own things as well as game together.

Currently reading: At the moment I'm re-reading The Adventure Zone graphic novel series. I just finished the Enchanted Forest Chronicles (for the millionth time), and wanted more humor and shenanigans. I loved the Balance arc, it was so good for their first dnd campaign and while the others have been good, they haven't hit the mark for me like Balance did. I have ALL of the graphic novels that are out, even preordered the latest one, the artist who does the series art is brilliant, and I love the little nods to the silliest things from the show, while making it a proper BOOK so the ooc conversations get translated into ic convos that make perfect sense, but also how the artist has made certain to tie in the overarching story into EVERY book! If you haven't listened to the series, you are in for a LOVELY surprise. Gah! I can't wait for the other books! They are going to be so good, and I am going to cry when they're done. Oh and Kravitz.... I love Kravitz... that character design *chef's kiss*

The funeral procession for Maarva. The stubborn and purposeful decision to hold the march when they chose, not when the Empire uniforms said they could. The slow, almost discordant strains as the music coalesced into a perfect storm to ignite a simmering rebellion. The cadence shift as the two streams of musicians meet and the music rises into a challenge, a threat, a PROMISE. Then you add Maarva's speech (let her say "Fuck the Empire", you cowards) and Brasso wielding her brick to clock a soldier and signal the beginning of their uprising??? *chef's kiss*

Nemik, his keen sense of what exactly was happening and his insight into the Empire, how it mustered its power and how that power could be fought... His manifesto. Those words that resonated in Cassian's soul, quiet at first, able to be ignored, but rising in insistence and volume until the earnest voice of a fallen rebel became a clarion cry and a call to arms.

The entire prison arc. NEVER MORE THAN TWELVE. The hubris of the Empire to hold so many lives in their hands with so little actual authority to maintain control. POWER DOESN'T PANIC. The strength this gave them as long as ignorance remained intact and the fatal flaw it became the moment knowledge and resolve set an unstoppable force in motion. ONE WAY OUT.

EVERYTHING ABOUT B2EMO. How they keep creating these little creatures and droids that steal our hearts instantly without repeating the formula is beyond me. But I would kill for this stuttering, loyal, lonely little clunky box of a droid.

I mean, what else do I chose? That stunning shot of Mon Mothma, sat in breathless fear and faltering resolve in a situation that allows her no escape, framed by her gilded cage, as much a prisoner of her choices and the threat of the Empire as Cassian in his floating penitentiary. Her casual and calculated framing of her husband for financial irregularities?

Or do I go with that masterwork of physical transformation as Luthen, in the close quarters of his transport ship, shifts before our eyes from lethal, capable, taut and serious features of a rebel leader to the soft-cheeked, high-society benevolent dealer in art and antiquities? Or Luthen's speech to his reluctant accomplice, his Empire mole, as he relentlessly strips him of any illusions that there is any way out for any of them. With a few savage words he reveals the price he has paid for the work that must be done, so that others may have a chance to survive, to fight, and with luck, bring down an Empire?

Or the sheer brilliance of the show giving us an Empire far removed from Force and lightsabers and dynasties of power. Instead we get bureaucratic ladder climbers, the beige horror of the banality of evil, decisions made for tactical reasons or financial, retaliations that vastly exceeds any sense of proportion to the perceived crime, and the insidiously slow erosion of rights. The most chilling of villains and chillingly relatable in our current lives. "The Empire has been choking us so slowly, we're starting not to notice. The time has come to force their hand."

so it's my first time listening to tmbte fully after putting it off bc i knew i would be so excited i wouldn't be able to regulate my emotions HDSKSHD

and my ttrpg discord server had to witness me have very very live thoughts and reviews about the album and vessel's voice and vessel's new mask (which i plan on making!)

i love the chorus so so much. i had so many feelings relating to the chorus. and the harmonies ohhhh my god.

when i heard "the whites of your eyes" my jaw dropped. i was overcome with emotion.

I finished Steins;Gate 0 VN and I have some thoughts

So, I watched Steins;Gate 0 a few weeks after finishing the original anime and I didn’t like it. The story felt disjointed, many plot points seemed rushed or pointless and I had issues understanding how we got in places we ended up in. It has been a couple of years now, so it seemed fair to give it another chance hoping that the visual novel is better.

Overall, my feelings are complicated because I still have many complaints about the story, characters and endings. But when SG 0 got good, it got really good. I strongly believe the reason behind my problems is the structure of this game. I’ve seen somebody describe it as a Frankenstein’s monster and, yeah, that’s an accurate description.

I'm going to spoil a lot, so you have been warned.

So, SG 0 structure is a bit odd and its graph (taken from the wiki) looks like this

Here is the order in which I’ve played the game:

Gehenna’s Stigma -> Twin Automata -> Recursive Mother Goose -> Promised Rinascimento -> Vega and Altair -> Milky-way Crossing

I'm going to sprinkle some of my favourite CGs in this post for your enjoyment.

Positive thoughts

I loved Daru in this game. I recalled his relationship with Suzuha being weird and uncomfortable to watch, but it was fairly sweet here. Yeah, there have been some cringy moments, but that was the minority. Also, even outside of that, he was great. His relationship with Yuki? Really sweet. Conspiring with Maho? Great. That moment when he punches Okabe in the face? One of my favourites in the whole game!

Maho no longer felt like a Kurisu replacement. They allowed her different personality to shine and made the best of it. The majority of her screen time was a pure joy to experience. And what was the best part of all of that? Her friendship with Moeka in Twin Automata. It was just *chef's kiss* so good! So good in fact that I consider not having this friendship blossom in other endings as a huge disadvantage.

The music was, dare I say it, better than in the original? Yeah, Gate of Steiner and Remember Me are iconic, but Messenger, A Song Played by the Stars and Re-awake are just so good. Also, I enjoyed ambience music a bit more.

In my mind, the main theme of the original Steins;Gate is loneliness. With Steins;Gate 0 introducing AI to the story, I find it fitting that the focus of the story was on the subject of identity and personal worth. A theme that was beautifully shown in Twin Automata (I think you might already know which ending is my favourite).

I can't judge how realistic Okabe's anxiety attacks were, but they felt real to me. Of course, his VA is phenomenal, but the script also deserves a praise here. It was painful to see him struggle with his trauma and easily triggered flashbacks.

While on the topic, the voice acting was great. Granted, with a cast like this that shouldn't be a surprise, but it's still worth to mention it.

I'm not going to elaborate on this point. Just this moment:

Mayuri is always a beacon of positivist and an absolute joy to watch. We all need a Mayushii in our lives.

The climax of Twin Automata, Gehenna's Stigma and Promised Rinascimento are all great. That moment when Leskinen traps Okabe in GS and Okabe realises, he can't die for the next ~15 years? Chilling.

"Holy cow! So I said we should come soon" - name a more iconic line in VN. I will wait, you won't find any.

Negative thoughts

Kagari. I don't like her, I don't need her, she should go away. She is boring at best and annoying at worst. Her story is silly in Promised Rinascimento and in Vega and Altair it's just bad. How?

She has a plastic surgery to look like Yuki. Ok, how did she manage to make herself to look so accurate to the original, that she fooled Suzuha? Alright, they know about the current whereabouts of the original, so that's how they manage to "copy" her. But in that case, I want to know more about this subplot.

We know that this Kagari and Yuki share a room in the future. That's real awkward, not gonna lie.

How does she survive Vega and Altair since she died before Okabe time leapt? Is it because Suzuha and Mayuri made a successful jump to the past? But if that's so, shouldn't the worldline change and therefore Okabe notice it? Actually, why doesn't he notice when the worldline changes due to Suzuha and Mayuri making a decision? I don't think this type of shifting was properly introduced before.

If we have this Kagari in the future, what happens with the child Kagari? If Mayuri goes back to 2025 and still chooses to adopt her, wouldn't that cause massive issues? Yes, that shouldn't happen because shift will occur before, but it does bother me a lot.

Similarly, Fubuki and Kaede can go away. They contributed close to nothing and I don't need them here.

I was hoping for more development for Luka and Faris. On the other hand, I think that Kurisu card should be used a bit less. Let us truly feel we miss her.

In the original, everything happens because of our protagonists. They make the PhoneWave, they choose to experiment and then they need to suffer consequences. Here they (especially Okabe) are mostly passive and just allow stuff to happen. This causes problems because worldline changes many times in 0 and we don't really know how and why it happens. Sure, it is connected to Amadeus (usually), but I'm lacking an explanation. It just kinda happens. I disliked not knowing the reason behind each change. Sure, in the original the reason isn’t always perfect (like how they change Luka’s sex), but at least I know the source. Again, not an issue in itself, but I regret we didn’t get more answers. 

The first chapters were really difficult to get through. With no goal in mind, Okabe no longer being charismatic enough to carry the story and not really having a plot, it’s difficult to call this experience enjoyable.

Pacing was all over the place. Steins;Gate 0 consists of 14 chapters (including Prologue and True End). The minimum number of chapters you need to play to reach an ending is 5 (Gehenna’s Stigma and Twin Automata) and the longest single route takes 7 (Milky-way Crossing). Because of that, I often felt like the story either didn’t have or had too many climaxes. Apart from that, it was disappointing to find out that some of my favourite moments aren’t technically canon. Well, to be fair, you could even argue that in the grand scheme of things, nothing that happens in beta was real because the world shifts to Steins Gate, but you know what I mean.

I didn’t like the push for romance for Okabe. First of all, because it felt disrespectful towards him. Here we have a broken, depressed man who needs a lot of therapy. Playing romantic tension for laughs, while we are dealing with a man who killed a person he loved, seems very icky for me. And implying that Maho might develop feelings for him just felt so unhealthy, because she would literally become a replacement. Kinda like in Harry Potter where one of the Weasley twins dies and then his girlfriend marries the surviving brother - that’s just messed up. Look, I love both of them, but they need therapy, not romance.

Minor nitpick, so, they updated character sprites for 0, but, of some reason, in Summer Mayuri and Faris have their old sprites. Similarly, Kurisu has her old sprite in Okabe's memories and while we quickly jump to alpha, while she has new new sprite as Amadeus and in Maho's memories. Why? Who did this? Also, nobody except for Kagari and Suzuha get a sprite in the future. They robbed us! Also, also, I find it kinda funny that Okabe notices himself having partially grey hair, but he doesn't have them on CGs.

True Ending is a joke. It's short and anticlimactic. Yes, it would feel cheap if they just gave us the original VN ending to play, but I would prefer if they added it.

Conclusion

So, I did write more negative points, but I can't say I had a bad time. I enjoyed playing the game... for the most part! Look, I'm not going to pretend that the original SG had no issues. It had, but I think 0 lows were too low for me. But, hey! At least I would say it had different problems, so... progress?

While I do appreciate that the structure of 0 allowed us to experience more perspectives and stories (also, I enjoyed that the path to Steins;Gate requires many futures), I ultimately think it was also its biggest flaw. I might one day consider what kind of rewrites I would implement.

As a side note, I think I might write a separate post on the depiction of AI in SG 0 because it is something I was working on during my bachelor's and master's thesis, therefore I have thoughts.
