Right. Lucy often gave you advice on clothes - on the times you joined him in the city, you were constantly texting her pictures of clothes you saw in shop windows, wondering if you should buy them. And it made sense - the fact he got a full view of your body between the two photos was just a heavenly side effect of you trying to show both sides of the set. some beats of silence passed, but a thought crossed your mind. if she really hated this interaction that much, she could have got up and left eons ago, yet she stayed here and endured it all. hmm. you blurted out, “els, have you kissed anyone before?” 

and again she stayed silent, even after you waited patiently for an answer. she kept looking away, her jaw tense. 

you decided to quit the teasing just for a moment, and speak to her gently, genuinely. you shifted to sit a little closer to her and asked, “do you want to?” her gaze locked onto your mouth, she licked her lips, then muttered, “if you're really offering and not just fucking with me, sure-”

basically the chain goes on a minish cap adventure but they dont have a cap and also the stones are just the colors turned into dragons instead.

also reversing the finding order so its green, blue, red, vio now. green is just looping around in the stratosphere or whatever. blue is hanging out near the zora since, yknow, lots of water. red is in eldin for similar reasons. no one can fucking find vio actually because how the fuck do you locate earth??

along the way they slowly discover that hey? the colors kinda represent the goddesses sorta? except what is vio then?

DUNGEONNNNNNN CRAWLLLLLLL,,,, the colors hide out in dungeonssssssss,,,,, its literally like a whole ass zelda game,,,,,

btw for the general shape of the map, the volcano is in the NW corner, the water in the NE corner, theres a rain forest in the SE, and i guess a desert in the SW??? N is grassland leading to the lost woods, W is moutain range with ice stuff going on, S is also grassland but it leads to swamp, E is lake hylia with some woods surrounding it (as you can tell i am trying desperately to frankenstein a map together from three different ones. sigh.)

if we’re going the “imitating a zelda game” route idk what kind it should be tho. we could do the oot/albw/eow/etc route, collect three items in three dungeons, have a break from dungeons with some situation that is a big move in the plot and frequently involve collecting the master sword, collect more items in more dungeons and fight boss for real (lots of adventuring and dungeons). or we could do the st/mc route, which is five dungeons, but you have a quest to get to each, so its more like quest-dungeon-quest-dungeon-etc. i think this also depends on the size of the game actually. all the bigger games have the first type of storyline and the smaller ones have the second

okay further research reveals that the oracle games, and links awakening, all have a collect 7 (or 8) items and do the thing to fight the boss. so it has the dungeon number of the larger games, and the quest to the dungeon pipeline of the smaller games

EDIT: okay after much consideration. we’re going with option two. mostly bc i dont want to make that many dungeons up 🙃

anyways they also have dungeon monsters and bosses. just like a real dungeon :)

okay dungeon ideas time. mc has two minish dungeons and two regular sized dungeons. the deepwood shrine (earth) and temple of droplets (water) are minish ones. the cave of flames is an old hylian mine in mount crenel and the fortress of winds is. well. a fort.

but green is in the clouds so that just leaves the fire dungeon to draw from in mc.

speaking of clouds, fsa very conveniently has a level named “realm of the heavens”. it is in fact just a whole level in the clouds. also theres the palace/tower/whatever the fuck of winds. so yk. (angst opportunity?? the chain climbing the tower only to come upon the room with the shattered mirror?? thoughts chat?)

as for blue. uhm. well. all i know is i want an ice based dungeon where its got a big ole water pool that probably is fed by the ocean or smth and thats where blue is hanging out. kind of like eow with the weird twister beastie.

as for vio. he is underground and that is as much as im certain of. did have a big ole brain wave that the way to get to him is through the building that will one day become the palace of the four sword, before it is sent to the sacred realm (to become the dark realm). other than that. you gotta go deep into a forest to get there??

and for bosses for each, red gets the helmasaur king (from leg’s time; helmasaur king ii was the boss at the end of the red sword’s portion of the palace).

im not gonna lie i kinda fuck with helmaroc king for green, not only because big bird for the wind element (and from wind’s game lmao), but also the irony of huge bird flying above clouds. sorry sky youve been culturally appropriated.

as for blue, he gets gyorg from majoras mask. time is sweating. gyorg annoying as fuck and you get to try to scramble to dry land once the dude recovers so you get anxiety as well. blue would fucking hate the bitch. 10/10 perfect option

i struggled to find something for vio, especially after accidentally making a “one boss from each timeline” thing happen. but i think i found one i like. skyward sword’s koloktos, simply because many handed boss always sick. and also because of the climbing out of hell scene in the mfs dungeon. the pits vs beautiful upper level concept is honestly kinda fire for doing his dungeon with. also its closer to the beginning of the timeline instead of down the splits

for the dungeons maybe you need to get some symbol of the respective goddess to enter the dungeons, which is where each color ran off to hide within by pure instinct. like the medalions that have shown up in some games or something. which also helps with them making the goddess connection, since theyre hiding where their respective goddess protects them (four, literally helped give the goddesses a house in mc: 🧍)

had a huge brainwave that the colors all fuck up the elements around them in a big ole radius. green accidentally makes tornadoes and hurricane winds around him and since the tower is pretty close to the castle it affects people there too. red irritates the volcano in mount crenel (because it had lava inside of it but on the outside crenel is mostly dust and dirt and stuff) and it starts spewing lava and stuff. blue whips the ocean in a big circle around him into a giant storm and thats why the chain cant just swim to him and have to go through the dungeon. vio accidentally causes earthquakes and sinkholes and he also makes plantlife grow absolutely crazily. yknow, to really up the ante on this whole quest. and now we even have a very good reason why they go to get green first (he is affecting castle town directly).

how do they learn about the colors? well, four left behind his bag and in that bag is a journal that has both random ass thoughts and communications between the colors.

the minish are in fact present in this one and they are trying to help the heroes but literally none of them can translate. except four but. awol. so theres some goofy ass shenanigans happening in that direction

speaking of the minish, the colors all still have the ability to shrink. in theory. theyve got the feather earrings and everything, which would look cool as fuck on dragons i should say. but anyway.

they cannot shrink on their own because their elemental magic is overpowering their minish magic. they usually have at least some elemental powers as the colors but now that is increased tenfold. the chain gets magic bottles that are sourced from the minish who enchanted them with power that can temporarily overcome the overwhelming elemental aura to get to the color’s minish magic. thus making them small :)

and when the colors are trapped in one while minish-sized they can no longer become big again.

yes you can picture lizard-sized dragons being incredibly grumpy in glass bottles.

when they capture a dragon, they head to the minish? maybe. idk someone to make a four sword using a fragment of the original sword and the elemental stone in the dragon. so basically instead of repairing the four sword and splitting, since theyre already split and the sword’s already in pieces, they repair each split and then combine them together. idk how they get the elemental stone out of the colors, but each time they repair a four sword piece they reverse the transformation and get the color back.

so they adventure around with the colors, is what im saying. which is good news for them communicating with the minish lmaoo. no more charades for them

Vaquero Johnny so i can talk about my headcanons for Johnny, lots of words so be wary

I’m gonna be straight to the point for this one, he’s kinda ugly but in the cute way yk? Like you see a possum and you think aww it’s so ugly it’s cute type shit. That’s how I pictured him because the girl that sat next to me for my elective class described him as utterly adorable and I was like Nu uh his ass is ugly and I kept that mentality until my history teacher explained why people saw him as cute. Like people think he’s cute because he has the classic big ass eyes and he had the potential to be cutest or handsomest guy but he couldn’t since he’s troubled and it kinda just clicked for my then. But also with the whole ugly thing, he’s also tough and hood looking to other people that aren’t part of the gang so I like to exaggerate his ruggishness with his scar and everything about him. Now with that out of the way here is the actual silly headcanons 😭

Since he most likely doesn’t get to shower often you can’t really see his curls all the much so it ends up just looking a bit wavy idk if that’s possible but I also imagine greasing your hair isn’t going to help much with caring for your curls.

He had really fucked up teeth that where never corrected because his parents don’t even love him enough to get him a new toothbrush (lil homie has been using the same toothbrush since the second grade) They don’t hurt him too much much but his jaw does lock up and sometimes causes him to slur his words. His favorite food is anything meaty and rich and also popcorn, m&ms and peanuts. (Idk how he’s eating crunchy foods like popcorn with his fucked up teeth but whatever’s) But he doesn’t get to indulge in those favorites often since his ass usually has to settle for air, water or sleeping early for dinner.

He’s left handed, that’s like the only thing his dad likes about him since he’s also left handed. Speaking of arms! He fractured his right elbow when he was like eight and never told anyone so it healed on its own but healed crooked.

As we still are on the topic of Johnny’s medical history, he either gets sick really easily during the winter or has the toughest immune system nothing in between though.

I know he has a canonical birthday and favorite color but I’m just gonna ignore that. He was born on November 5 (he only exists because of Valentine’s Day) and he looks like he enjoys the color purple idk

Some miscellaneous ones now ig. Painted his nails black since Ponyboy begged him to match with him. Johnny and Dallas have matching dog tags. He likes to name the stray animals. He’s a light sleeper but in the way how soldiers in the military are. They sleep for a few hours but still somehow manage to get a lot of energy from it but can wake up easily when needed, like for Johnny’s case, police sirens. He has a different shade of dark brown in his eyes. It’s very VERY subtle but his right eye is a lighter brown than his left. His dad used to call him a brunt cookie when he was younger. Once the cops pulled up to him at one point and he just stared at them with fear in his eyes and they gave him a number to call if he wanted a lobotomy before driving away.

o yea and i gave some of them new abilities cuz i felt like it and sometimes their design was fundamentally different enough from the original that itd be better to have new abilities than try to figure out how the redesign would use their canon ability (like redesigned toodles), if i dont mention an ability thats kept in the redesign its probably been replaced with another one, and im calling canon twisteds by CT!(name) and the redesigned twisteds by RT!(name)

twisted toodles: third worst jumpscare

- Can now see as far as CT!Pebble can. As slow as CT!Finn when roaming, but rolls REALLY fast like a bowling ball when chasing. The rest of her stats are the same.

- A little bit before her roll starts, she splashes some ichor on the ground near the player (to basically tell them the direction of her roll). It's close enough that they'll be able to see it even in a blackout without light upgrades, but far enough that you'd have to pay a bit of attention to notice it.

- When she's chasing a player but ends up going out of a specific range from them (the range is a VERY big circle), she stops, repositions herself really fast and rolls again to run over the player. If she hits a player, she keeps rolling until she hits a wall. Then, when she hits a wall she immediately loses aggro, gets blinded and can't move for like 2 seconds before getting back up to roam again. If she doesn't hit a wall while she's chasing a player, she keeps rolling.

twisted tisha: figure from doors real

- She's slower than average now. She still cleans floors, but now she cleans ceilings too!! The rest of her stats are the same.

- Can extend her legs really far, to the point where she can touch the ceiling with her hands. Leading to her being able to look above walls and down at you.

- She can now feel the vibrations your footsteps make as long as you're near her, even when you're walking and she's really high up. She won't attack you immediately, she'll just pause her cleaning for a bit and look in the direction of the vibrations (there's a short delay between her noticing the vibrations and her looking). If she sees you, she'll start chasing you like a normal twisted while retracting her legs to be at her normal height.

im splitting this into 3 parts for each character in the tea set

disurf

- Is as fast as CT!Toodles but is always hiding in a corner.

- Runs away from players when RT!Teagan starts attacking, bringing RT!Teagan with her to hide in another corner. Disurf actively dodges players as much as she can while still keeping her speed, so she sometimes ends up running into players making them lose a heart. Disurf keeps running away until her attention span runs out, at that point she's gonna start looking for the nearest corner to hide in.

- Her line of sight defaults to where Disurf's line of sight is. When Disurf sees a player, RT!Teagan looks in the same direction as her for like 1 second. If RT!Teagan doesn't see anyone, she goes back to her default line of sight.

- Only attacks when she has direct line of sight with a player. She attacks by throwing twisted Cupbits at you. You can dodge them by hiding behind walls, or, if she's far enough, by stepping aside so that the Cupbit flies past you.

cupbits

- They're average speed, never break when thrown, and have a shorter than average attention span. They have no special abilities, only a regular attack.

- They die after 7 seconds by falling apart and turning into pure ichor, then that ichor gets smaller and smaller and disappears. There's no limit on how many twisted Cupbits can be spawned at once.

AND:

- They're a hivemind, if one of them sees you, all of them do. When you get seen by one of them:

All twisted Cupbits have their attention spans refreshed, but only if the player that was seen is the same player they're chasing.

- Disurf will avoid running in your direction and will instead do a full 180 and run the other way (even if there's players in that direction).

EVEN LONGER RANT UNDER CUT but i explain my twisted designs, the actual reasons to y i dont like the canon designs, and other shit i guess idk (in that order)

my twisted design process (for all twisteds):

i realllly didnt like the way i handled the twisted designs in literally every single one of my redesigns (except for poppy, box and lamp i guess??) so i made some rules for how to make them so its not just "make them big and sharp and splash them with ichor", its canon divergent yes but its really cool i think so its staying:

the twisted versions of every character are mutated versions of themselves that lean so very hard into their main personality trait or role in a very negative way, to the point that theyre almost like mean-spirited parodies of themselves (carries over to how their special twisted abilities work too), theyre waay more likely to get violent too (u kno, so that theyre twisted versions of themselves)

patches of ichor appear at spots that changed from the original design (the ichor comes first, then the mutations), or their clothes absorbed it cuz the ichor kinda acts like water that makes worse stains, or they got filled up by ichor in some way

i headcanon that these versions of the twisteds would sometimes reenact episodes from the tv show or some of the routines theyd go through while the place was still running, but waaaaay more tense and sometimes depressing cuz of their mutations and very big personality shift

most likely reasons to y i rlly dont like the canon designs:

i looked at some more fanart and i legit cant tell if i actually dont like the character designs or if i just dont like the games artstyle wat the hell ;-; LIKE THEY LEGIT LOOK PRETTY GOOD WHEN OTHER PEOPLE DRAW THEM!!

BUT I FINALLY FOUDN THE WORDS TO PROPERLY EXPLAIN Y I AHTE THE CANON DESIGNS SO MUCH!!! its cuz a lot of them feel very lazy and generic, like the only thing making them stand out is the fact that theyre a dandys world character and not just a character, like theyre simple yes thats cool and that works really well for a character like pebble and sprout, but most of them are TOO simple cuz they usually have like only 1 range of color in their design (tisha is blue to white, brightney is dark red to white, shelly is brown to cream, while sprout is red to white and green, and rodger is black to brown and purple)

but some of them have things in their design that just dont work (finn, poppy, brightney), maybe its cuz stuff are in bad places (poppys bow on her head) or they just dont look good (finn), wat makes this even worse is that some characters like tisha and brightney and shrimpo have patterns to try and make their design more interesting i gues?? but it just doesnt work and genuinely makes it feel more generic :(

so i think the real problem with dandys worlds designs is a few things:

1. that theres not enough diversity in their colors if u get wat i mean, like seriously most of the skins do this (having different colors to make sure not everything is visually samey)!!!

imo the biggest example of "not enough color diversity" is vee and astro and their skins, like they look SO MUCH BETTER when theyre not just "green, black" and "purple to cyan, black, white" (i wouldve put teagans skin in here too if there was just slightly more yellow), it doesnt even have to be colors that are on the opposite sides of the color wheel, just visually pleasing color combos!!!

2. just better structuring (if thats wat u call it) i guess??

like finn, yes his character design fits the having enough color diversity problem, but it just doesnt work, i think its cuz of how saturated the cyan and orange are, making them not mesh well together, like if the orange was a darker less saturated color then maybe the colors could work, but it could also just be his clothes, like switch out his life vest for anything else thats related to marine stuff (maybe a swimsuit with flipper feet??) and his pants for something darker

3. not following their theme very well, or theyre pretty lacking in roles so their theming is very vague

i think shelly is the biggest example of this, like why is she a shell, i get that shells can be fossils too but honestly just make her a skeletal dinosaur at that point or one of the many modern descendants of dinosaurs (like birds and crocodiles and turtles), her twisted design is rlly good tho!!! its my favorite design in the entire game and its honestly the coolest one too

and now for 3 characters that i think have problems in most of these (that i havent already mentioned):

glisten is an example of another color problem that i didnt mention cuz i felt like this was a problem that only glisten had, the colors not being the right color (idk how else to name it ;-;), he looks SO GOOD in fanart but hes just meh in the official game even when compared to his original picture as a dhmis oc, and im pretty sure its cuz the pink parts of his design arent saturated or dark enough, leading to the yellow parts of his design blending in more easily with the bow (look at the black and white version as a reference on that, the brightness of the pink and yellow are very close to each other meaning ud have a harder time trying to tell them apart, its easier to tell when colored yes but their brightness still carries over leading to some color blending (idk another word for it srry), not as much blending as in the black and white version but still a subtle detail u could pick up on), and his blush, im gonna be honest with u i just think it looks bad and i dont even know y, just eyeshadow would look waay better

boxten oh god, they do kinda follow the color diversity thing but the way hes designed is just not it, he doesnt come off as shy in his design or the dialogues i saw or even animation, hes more of a softie than anything, i only knew that he was shy when i read his info card

poppy follows the color diversity thing the most imo, pink cyan and yellow are colors that i think work really well together, but the structure of her design and how well her design fits her role doesnt work either, actually im pretty sure i fixed her design structure in my second redesign (second batch) of her, all i did was move the bow from being weirdly placed on her head to being tied around her waist like glisten and mess around with the colors, now with her design fitting her role, i think the bubble is a good choice!! it fits playful way better than energetic i think but it still works, my only problem is with her clothes, it does not give off energetic vibes, i honestly think shed have a better design if she wore the clothes professional tag players and maaaybe mountain bikers wear

other shit idk:

honestly i wanted to include all the mains here too (as of writing, shelly has a complete redesign (more changed than the lamp) and vee and astro are just light redesigns, im not done with sprout and im never redesigning pebble hes already perfect) but the release date for the new update dropped as soon as i was gonna start digitizing the twisted tea sets design, actually i think i went overboard on like ALL of the redesigns to the point where i should prob start calling them rewrites or very loosely inspired instead, oops i did NOT mean to do that

also i just recounted the total characters, theres only 21 of them how the fuck did i get 22 last time???

Downton Abbey Fashion 2 - Edwardian outdoors fashion

Picking this back up again after... a year? Who cares; time is an illusion and so is the soundness of my mind. I wanna talk coats and walking dresses today, let's look at Downton Abbey's season 1!

To my amusement, Violet in the first season is almost exclusively seen in walking dresses and coats; they definitely dominate her fashion aside from the black evening dresses she wears for dinner during mourning. Mostly because the dower house isn't very prominently featured in the first season, so Violet is usually "coming over" rather than seen in her home. And she establishes the color palette that not only honors her name, but is thematically tied to all the Crawleys. Starting with that plum walking suit which I quite like; the embroidery on the jacket is so nice! And just, the color coordination in this outfit. Check out that plumage on the hat. I'm just not sure about the fur stola she has in the second picture. It may be the light, but this fur looks so blue?? It also hides the prettiest part of the jacket, hmph.

I'm not sure why, but I've come to think of this particular outfit as pretty iconic for the Dowager™, even though she doesn't wear it again after this season. The outfit looks a lot like one I've seen in a fashion plate from 1901, but we know Violet doesn't always keep up with times. The blouse underneath seems to be the same as she wore with the previous outfit, the walking suit itself is comparatively simple in its making; no more decoration that the black braiding, which is a wise choice as the fabric is doing all the work here. Where did they even get this? Where do I get this? How does Violet pull off such a waist cinch a good 50 years after these would have been all the rage? Will she ever not be the queen of magnificent headgear? Questions aplenty!

Granted, this one doesn't seem to be so much a walking dress as a house dress that she easily repurposes by adding the fur stola and a very nice hat with velvet roses. We do see her wearing it inside, but it does seem to suffice to take a walk over to the abbey. Simple one, but I like it quite well for a grey dress. Also note the brooch which she has worn with the previous outfit, too.

Another feathered hat, another blouse, but this time it's purple silk, and the white lace becomes the upper instead of the under layer, and thereby the center piece of this outfit. That is some glorious lace, but I'm also noticing these earrings. I'm pretty sure Mary has similar ones.

I wasn't sure if I should add in Isobel's outfits - she's not dressing to the nines in season 1 yet, as she hasn't settled in the nobility environment she's recently finding herself in. That not to say she dresses badly; I envy her this burgundy, velvet-lined coat (and she seems to like it enough to keep wearing in in season 2). But it doesn't try to be high fashion; it's simple and nice... and Isobel already knows to let her hats do the work for her outfit.

Similar color, but slightly different style; that flowery fabric chosen for collar and cuffs is just lovely, and it really pops before that background. And if I'm not mistaken, this one has pockets~ Also a very pretty belt with double buckle. Isobel may not be as obscenely rich as the Downton Abbey Crawleys, but she has style.

Not much to say about this coat tbh; it's kinda boring. But check out that elegant feathered hat; someone is very quickly taking fashion cues from Violet.

Comparing this coat directly with those that came before I'd say this is one that Isobel only bought recently - I'd hazard a guess this one is couture. The beautiful embroidery, the cream color where she stuck with dark, muted shades before. This one is supposed to Keep Up, and it does not disappoint!

If there's purple for the Dowager, there must be purple for Lady Grantham. I think Cora is introduced in this coat, and while it's not much to look at, I will grant that it looks cozy. And, of course, a plain coat with undecorated lapels makes for a nice background to a pretty Edwardian hat!

This coat is one of my favorite pieces in the entire run of the show. I can't believe that this one wasn't a keeper for later seasons. Look at all this wonderful chocolate-colored silk satin! Look how that minimal decoration of a few buttons and a couble chevrons in gold thread makes the lapels and cuffs pop! Thankfully, Cora pairs it with hats that, while chic, are in neutral colors so they still let the coat be a statement of itself.

A pretty walking suit, this one looks less grand and a little more girlish that the last. The hats balance that out; especially the richly decorated and color-coordinated first hat is definitely more ladylike than girlish. I'm wondering if Cora had it made to match this suit; the color goes so perfectly with the sheen of the silk. Also worth noting: Lovely lace collars.

This velvet walking suit... hm. I'm not sure how I feel about it. How about, "I wouldn't wear it, but it's definitely good-looking"? Something about this, despite it being the fashionable sihouette, feels dated. Maybe that's just how I feel about velvet, or it's the fluttery blouse cuffs working in tandem with the golden and bronze piping. Also, the hat with the big striped ribbon is giving off slight Rose-boarding-Titanic vibes.

Last but not least, this beauty in white. You know, these loosely-falling lapels that fold onto themselves are a recurring element in Downton Abbey costumes, but I'm actually not sure I've ever seen them on something I knew to be historically authentic. But who cares; she is beauty, she is grace, she lets this one go entirely undecorated so she can shine. I have a slightly softer spot for the second hat she combines this with, if only because it being tied to her chin with a scarf is an element of elegance we haven't seen on any outfit before.

Rosamund doesn't appear a lot in the first season, but I'd feel amiss not to mention her - look at her trying to step in her mother's shoes, hat-wise. Eh, this metaphor got lost in the wardrobe. It's a bit of a shame that the finish they used on this hat makes it look so plastic-y, but it's still the most eye-catching piece of this outfit; I think Rosamund chose a rather plain coat to go with this on purpose.

Oh, she's serving here. That black skirt looks like it might be a hobble skirt, but there's only so much I can be mad at an outfit that includes this gorgeously tailored coat. But again, it is fairly understated in colors and decoration. I think Rosamund just likes to show off her hat collection.

This one has been sitting in my inbox for days - sorry bout that, I haven't had much of a drive to draw. But it is something I was interested in trying to show so I gave a stab at it today since I had the chance

I start off by drawing a circle and cross that serve very vague purposes. They kinda help generally. And pretty much right after I draw the side of the face and then the shoulders (for a bust). I don't really have any base sketches to guide, really just drawing what I think looks good

I draw the face, desperately trying to ignore how stupid it looks because it will end up better when it's finished. Hopefully. This is where you pray

Onto the second layer I begin to draw the hair (Depending on my confidence in the hairstyle, it might not even be on a second layer). Kinda winging it so I decide arbitrarily to tuck his hair behind his ear because he's such a pretty boy and I wanna see his face. Totally not because I could not. get the hair right no no

Add the back of the hair, erase stuff that needs erasing and that's the lineart. I use a big, thick brush with pen pressure because its just a lot of fun to fuck around with. Easy to manipulate lines ig. I use the eraser just as much as the brush in a way that's hard to word but the best I can do is "carving the lines"

Then he gets colour. Skin + clothes on one layer, eyes on a layer below, then the hair on the bottom layer. The undersides + suctions are coloured on a slipping mask. He also finally gets a nose here which is the starting point for the shading

I completely eyeball the colouring and shading. Just, again, what I think looks nice. Try to detail the hair but then decide immediately that the rings look bad, get rid of em, add lighting because he's a shiny boy and Bob's your uncle

This is the process for bust shots, sometimes even half bodies. Depends on how much time or effort I want to put into it. My art is seriously inconsistent and my process is even more so, and I'm mostly trying to draw in different ways with different brushes. I just find this way to be one of the easier ways. Hope this answers the question well enough :')) it was a neat question and I'd love to give details on how I do stuff

OKAY SO. shading, thing i am apparently accidentally really good at. it’s probably the thing i’ve gotten compliments on the most over the years which is funny because it’s probably the thing i’m Least confident that i can do well. therefore i can’t really give a tutorial but i can give a bunch of disjointed notes

(shown above is my Default Shading, further examples of different lighting below)

everything else under the cut or this is gonna be a mile long

i like using blue for shading, yellow/orange for lighting but generally you can just make them opposite/complimentary colours to each other and that’ll work. cool shadows, warm light or warm shadows, cool light. you get it. that’s a general rule there’s probably exceptions. i will say i hate using purple for shadows but that’s a personal preference (as is every colour i use being so saturated lol)

the orange around the edges is supposed to be subsurface scattering on skin but i put it on all the edges because i like how it looks 👍

yes there’s two different bounce lights. idk why i do this. i also just think it looks nice. i guess the one on the shading layer is more for form and the one on the lighting layer is more for the yk. lighting? anyways the first one is just a lighter version of the shading colour the second one is darker and slightly hue shifted (depending on the lighting scenario — it can be brighter if the situation calls for it)

the reason i don’t just shade around the edges is because it can make things look very flat which is the opposite of what you want when shading. sometimes it can just go on the edges in some specific scenarios but i like my shadows Chunky. basically having it go over the form instead of just along it can help show that form more

top left - night time | top right - bisexual? | bottom left - spotlight i guess? | bottom right - default/daylight again, just wanted to show a shape example

something i’ll also do a lot is have a separate multiply layer that’s just one colour and i’ll throw that over the whole thing to get the base colours correct for the lighting scenario. some people do it by eye but i am lazy so i cheat 👍 often it’ll be the same as the more detailed shadow colour but as with the top right example sometimes it’s different

shadows are either on multiply or linear burn, lights are either on add (glow) or glow dodge. depends on what looks best. same with opacity, i don’t have any real rules there

i also LOVE harsh lighting but that’s just a me thing. UMMM i can’t think of anything else to say

so next is ANATOMY okay this is also something i’m not super confident with lol but i can give some more disjointed notes by just redlining my own sketches lol

the uuuh “bottom of boobs is 2/3 down the ribs” isn’t technically correct? if ur drawing someone with big boobs and no bra on they’re probably gonna go lower but that’s kinda. where they come out from i guess. i also don’t think the “ribs” i draw are technically accurate but it works for a reference point

arms are a diamond (the shoulder.. muscle.. thing… idk what it’s called) and then some Tapered Tubes idk they’re not super complicated. if you wanna get more into it go google buff people and trace/redline their arms that’s how i learnt orz and uuuh i kinda also have the taking up 2/3 of the ribs but a bit Above. the way i’ve worded that makes no goddamn sense i’m bad at explaining this

ANYWAYS yeah bodies are just shapes if you want ppl to look unique just squash or stretch out the shapes 👍 and also learn actual anatomy stuff that always helps. my final message: learn to draw fat people it is no more difficult than drawing thin people

OUTFITS i love outfits. i have a pinterest board where a lot of my inspo comes from and it’s a section within a bigger board so ig i’m just giving you my whole inspo board. here (it’s the one called character fashion) (i do not condone art being reposted on pinterest without artists permission just ignore how much i have saved)

pinterest in general is good for outfit design stuff as long as you know where/how to look. u could also try fashion blogs and stuff

ummm a lot of stuff does just come from my own head tho, like based on clothes i like or vaguely inspired by stuff i’ve seen before. if you look through the board you can also see that like i rarely ever copy stuff directly i kinda just use whatever stuff i find as a base to work from. just find stuff you like and go from there i guess, i sometimes like picking a specific subculture or fashion style for a character and seeing what i can make from that (like missa is emo/scene, slime is like some kinda ravecore thing?? idk)

this is something i do on Most drawings to the point i have an auto action set up for it. duplicate the entire drawing (on csp the easiest way is to just merge visible to new layer), gaussian blur to like ? idk i think it’s 40% or something? i don’t remember, set that layer to soft light and lower the opacity

OH actually if u mean the colour jitter stuff on the . colours. that’s not a filter i was just using a brush with slight hue jitter on i was Experimenting

I HOPE THIS IS ALRIGHT TO ASK but ive admired how you render for a long time and you mentioned a while back in a post that you'd studied light particles n how they work and i have been. deathly curious as to how you went about doing that... drawing from reference and doing studies of course, but was there any particular way you went about it? i hope this finds you well. anyways . sorry ! thank you for your time

no need to apologize, and thank you so much for asking! not sure i can provide the best explanation, but most of what i learned was off of youtube and some blog-ish websites. this probably wont make any sense at all but ill try my best.

The Anatomy of Shadows

a big part of it was learning the anatomy of shadows, specifically the terminator and different varieties. heres a diagram,

terminators are just where the light and shadow meet. you always want to be able to tell where the terminator starts and ends!!! be CONFIDENT and BOLD with them!!!! they communicate so much information about structure

more on the different types of terminators/shadows. the ones i most use are cast and body.

a great example of these is the rembrandt triangle, composed of the shadow cast by the nose (cast shadow) and the shadow of the cheek (body shadow). body shadows are so so aewsome because they represents changes in planes. cast shadows r just kinda there. but i think they get softer the further away from the object they are since the light particles wiggle their way underneath and create reflection/ambient light

Ambient Occlusion and Light

SPEAKING OF WHICH!!! ambient light is basically just, the light particles that are bouncing around in a scene. imagine you're at the beach and its a really cloudy day, the shadows arent gonna be dramatic like they would if you were in a dark room with one light source.

youd think that we're kinda like. enveloped in light by default but no, we're pretty much always in shadow. shadows are the normal part. light is a strange freak that broke into your house and fucked everything up.

more about ambient occlusion. ambient occlusion just occurs when objects get close together and light cant wiggle its way in, as stated earlier. heres a shitty example. AO is key to realism.

Lighting Focus or Whatever the Fawk its Called I Forgot But There's Definitely a Scientific/Cinematic Term For This

another thing. level of detail in shadows is gonna be way different than in light and vice versa. u know when u spend a bunch of time outside and u go inside and its just solid black for a few seconds? its a similar idea here, ur eyes are so focused on the lit area they dont even give a shit abt the shadows.

because of this, i try to keep shaded areas blurred. a lot of detail is implied, just let the viewers mind fill in the blanks.

last but not least,

Subsurface Scattering (on the skin, at least)

can i be so honest with you for a second??? i dont actually know what this means, like in depth. im sure this has something to do with light penetrating through semi-transparent skincells and illuminating blood,, but i cant be sure. thats just an educated guess. past oakley is always smarter than present oakley for some reason.

i usually combine it with reflected light to create a more cohesive look. burt like... yeah... theres plenty of people who can explain this better than me

honestly i kinda just fuck around with color, technically i somewhat understand color theory but despite that im bad at choosing the right colors straight from the color wheel so a lot of times i just hsb adjust things until theyre right

ive got two different ways i color things currently:

softish shading with a marker brush in greyscale, applying too many color adjustment layers, and then coloring a little on top of the greyscale to make things not monochrome. usually i color on top of a clipping mask bc its a lot easier, which i did in the ace attorney one but not in the merlin one for ?? no reason i guess i just didnt think abt it lmao

the other way is i decide what color i wanna cast the whole drawing in and i make that the base clipping mask layer (which ive been making like. neon green a lot lately lmao) and then i block in color on top of that, and shadow color on top of that. the cybersix ones a great representation of what im doing there but its a little chaotic since all of the sketches were meant to be cropped oops. the cowboy danny phantom ones a lot cleaner of an example haha

i really like doing the second method because it also works great with lineless and also i really like comparative colors? i know theres a better phrase for it but like. when one color looks like a different color when its put in a different colored space. like when im making things green, id color blue things in the scene green and red things in the scene a muddy orangey color. or when i was really into yellow id make the blues purple. idk usually the “blue” in the scene is first color i like to figure out im not sure if its because its my favorite color or if its because i love drawing jeans but thats just how it goes lmao

oh also putting things on a or neutral bg helps to pick colors a lot easier than keeping the default white bg, i always turn it off and leave it transparent until im finished lmao. i use procreate light mode so its still rather light but not too bad

i dont really have any palettes that i intentionally adhere to, no, but i do get kind of stuck using the same colors for a few months before moving to something different. rn im very stuck on green and need to accept that not everything needs to be the grossest greens ever and ive been stuck on it for about six months? in the past i was really stuck on yellow haha

Something I neglect on this account is my love of character analysis I also don’t post headcanons that often so here we go big ol’ Chonny Jash character analysis/hcs post!

Ill try my best to keep my thoughts organized and make it clear what's analysis and what's a headcanon! This whole post is just going to be about their physical appearances if this yall like this post I might do one of their personalities/relationships.  

(Here's a little sketch of the 3 to act as a clip of Markipler jangling keys to keep your attention)  

Heart:

-The heart seems to have denser curls than the other two which also makes his hair look a bit shorter. 

-Of course he has the purple lipstick and the eye covering but a lot of people tend to not notice that his nails are painted white. (Well at lest they are in Light & Night) 

-When drawing him I try to make him appear softer than the other two. This is likely because he is typically seen in softer lighting than the others. 

-He holds himself a lot less confidently than the other two making him seem almost smaller than them 

-I headcanon that they are different heights and that heart is in fact the smallest out of the three 

-he wears all white besides of course his eye covering (Though its a popular headcanon that he also wears black gloves and I like that hc as well! I’m like 90% sure that comes from the clip from TME where the soul played piano with black fingerless gloves on.)

-It’s very common for people to headcanon he’s blind/has black eyes. I like those headcanons but I don’t see him as completely blind though I think he can still kinda see but not very well and definitely not with his blindfold on. I also headcanon he’s super sensitive to light. (I almost want to say it’s canon but I feel like the mentions of him not liking light are metaphorical but ya know I'm not a Jash fan unless I take the metaphors literally) 

Mind: 

-The Mind’s hair mainly is pushed back besides a strand that hangs in front of his face

-His hair is also noticeably less curly than the hearts. (At least it is in Light)

-I headcanon he also has the darkest hair out of the three.

-While talking about heacanons I also imagine he’s the tallest too. 

-Ofc he has the blue lipstick but his nails are also painted black. 

-He wears all black and he has a shirt with another shirt over it the second shirt looks like some kind of button up but I like to hc that he wears a leather jacket. 

-He also wears a necklace (don’t ask me to elaborate idk its in the beginning of Light & Night if you wanna see it) 

-He holds himself more confidently than the heart 

-When drawing him I try to make him seem harsh which leads into the fact his lighting is normally harsh and dark. 

Soul: 

-The souls hair almost looks wavy in some places??? (At least in Light) 

-I headcanon the soul to have the lightest hair out of the trio.

-The previous heacanon is likely due to the soul having much lighter lighting. 

-The soul like the other two has his nails painted in TME one hand is black and the other is white likely representing the other two and in Light & Night there's a frame in which his nails look rainbow colored though through the rest of the song he has the same nails he does in TME. 

-The soul also is wearing a bracelet in the frame I mentioned previously from Light & Night.

-And in the clip I mentioned of the soul having painted nails in TME he is wearing black fingerless gloves but the fandom seems to have decided to just give those gloves to the heart (which is the correct choice) 

-The soul of course has his red lipstick 

-unlike the other two the soul doesn't seem set to any specific color for his clothing his shirt appearing to be a shade of blue while his jacket is brown.

-One of the first things I noticed about the soul was his eyes, something about them just stood out to me. They appear darker than the minds and in Light & Night they look shiny unlike the mind’s. Which I mean makes sense with that saying about eyes being the window to the soul.

-In the end of TME the souls shirt kind of droops down on one side showing a bit of his chest but in Light & Night he has a different shirt that doesn't do that and it’s just normal. But you are gonna have to pry that first shirt out of my cold dead hands cuz I love it.   

-And finally the soul has a bit of an intimidation factor to him and he sort of has the way of commanding a room (Or at least whatever clip he’s in) and something about the soul reads as ethereal to me so I try to keep that when I draw him too.

also sorry it took me a bit- I have... quite a few projects I'm shoving myself into...

aaannyyyway lemme try and go into more detail (sorry about the last explanation not helping) using this WiP of phosphor

once the color and lineart is in, I usually go immediately into shading (Phosphor is the exception to this rule, as her wings and horns require a lot more work than just colors)

with the shading, I usually go with a somewhat dull purple, doing cell shading to start with.

and then I change the layer with the purple to 'multiply' and mess with the opacity until I get it how I like

thats only half the shading though! afterwards, I copy the shading layer and paste it in above, making sure its aligned with the original layer, and then I throw it through a gaussian blur

the difference is subtle, but I like how it gives just a tiiinny bit more depth to the shading :3

but after that, I move into one of my favorite parts- the shiny bits! the highlights aren't done that much differently from the shading, honestly.

I start off with just some white on another layer, but unlike the shading, I only do it on the shiny kinds of materials, in Phosphor's case, her armor. I'll also sometimes do it with fur, and definitely hair, but in the case of astrals I usually leave their fur and feathers alone unless I'm doing some REALLY dramatic lighting.

but once the highlights are drawn, I just do the same as I did with the shading- except instead of a multiply layer, I change it to overlay

tbh though, unlike most of my shading methods, I like to boost the shiny on phosphor even more (since she's, ya know, a goddess of starlight lmao)

So in that case, I do the same as I do with the shading layers- I copy past a second shiny layer in! it takes a little more editing to get just right though than the shading.

First, I lower the opacity of the new layer- don't want it toooo shiny!

for this specific pic, I think 51% opacity is the sweet spot.

and then I go into the layer settings, and slap an inner glow in! usually set to white and overlay (or in this case, Linear dodge) again

and then, on the same layer, I slap on an outer glow! this time white (again) with overlay (again)

usually the opacity kinda depends, along with the spread and size. it all depends on how large of a picture you're working with- same with the gaussian blur for the second shading layer!

aaand now we have this! admittedly, I think the highlights are missing something, but this is pretty much it! mind you, how this all works/looks also depends on what art program your using! I'm personally using photoshop, so the layers and interface is going to look pretty different from someone using, say, Krita, or Sai. buut that pretty much covers it! admittedly, I'm probably also going to be playing around with the highlights for a little bit, as I'm not too sure about how the gem bits look, but that's pretty normal lmao.

Voiceplay Visuals: Moana Medley

For the second part of this series of mine, we're going with Voiceplay's most popular video on YouTube (and Facebook) ever: their Moana Medley! Released on the 19th of August, 2017 (just a few days shy of Geoff's 37th birthday), it currently has over 44 million views on Youtube, and it truly is impressive in its arrangement and vocal performance. But I'm not here to talk about vocals, I'm here to talk about the visual stuff! So let's go!

Group shot! I love how Rachel is wearing a cute red(?) tropical dress, and the others... barely even try with their outfits 😂

Layne is wearing long pants (or three-quarters at least), but he's at least wearing a "surf Cali" shirt, so there was at least some thought in it. Earl I will allow, as he's just kinda got Beach vibes here ngl (I think it's at least partially the hair). Eli kinda looks more like he's ready to go play golf, and Geoff is wearing a hoodie! Geoff, dude... 😅

I was thinking about this video a while ago and was like "wait, who did J play again?" and then I had to remind myself "oh right, this was before he had become a full-time member (for about 3 or 4 years) (but after Tony left the group to focus more on Pattycake Productions and behind-the-scenes stuff)

Kind of a lucky coincedence that this video was the one that introduced a lot of people to Voiceplay (before Oogie Boogie's Song at least), since they actually tell you in the video who everyone is and who they're representing from the movie.

"How many pounds of sand did we use to create our fake beach?" Voiceplay asks in the description. I don't know, but i'm guessing Quite A Lot.

I said in another post that I was really tempted to do a thing studying the way Geoff's hair has changed over time and the various styles it has taken, and screw it, I'm doing it via this series! And this is what I mean by it:

A quick trace over a screencap (using a drawing app I have on my laptop), plus a few colour-picks from his hair (because I swear the shade of brown changes a lot just from the lighting alone). Anyway, we continue onwards!

(Okay yes a lot of this is just going to be me pointing out amusing moments, but Voiceplay really know how to be funny, and I'm having fun, so eh)

Well that answers my question about Earl's upper arm tattoo from the This Is Halloween video, anyway! (I.e. it is apparently real)

Layne was in charge of both the music arrangement and the video for this cover, so like, did he cast himself as Hei Hei? 😂 He could have been "Mini Maui", who is another nonspeaking character, but would have made more sense for his singing/rapping bit, but hey, don't get me wrong, I'm not criticizing! He makes a great Hei Hei 😁

(Also the fact that Layne's character card thing is orange, and this was before he earned the title of Carrot Lord! The foreshadowing!)

Geoff just deadpan handing a coconut to Layne, love that (also what is it with Voiceplay and nearly every single video screencap looking like a great Draw The Squad/Tag Yourself prompt? 😂

Geoff with not-yet-shoulder-length hair (i.e. Younger Geoff) is a different vibe to long-haired Geoff honestly. I very much love him as he is today, of course I do, but I still very much enjoy him here too <3

It's a freaking crime that they cut away from Geoff on the "I can't" part of the "I'll never hide, I can't, I'm too shiny!" line tbh /j

Geoff wears a watch a lot in videos (and since the last few years at least, he usually has something on the other wrist too), but for this video he apparently decided to not wear a more regular black or brown watch, and instead went with something a lot more, well, Shiny! (low-key drama queen vibes ngl, love that for him)

The "Know Who You Are" section is absolutely beautiful in every single way, 10/10, no notes

Love Rachel's dancing, she's a brilliant performer, both on mic and in front of the camera!

This might not be one of the biggest displays of "hey check out what I/we can do!" for any of the Voiceplay members out of all their videos, when it comes to vocal ranges and stuff, but it's still a great one to watch, and I'm happy that it did so well on social media! It's got the playfulness and silliness that has always been and continues to be part of Voiceplay's overall "brand", while still being a really good production and arrangement.

I would just like to say… that your use of colour in your work is absolutely insane!! Every time I look at your drawings and I see your colour-use my mind starts to go into overdrive. As someone who struggles with colour and colour palettes I’m so jealous in like the best way possible

Do you plan your colour palettes before hand (if so how do you go about doing that) or does it just sorta happen?

omg thank you so much for this ask, I absolutely love talking about the more technical side of art!

Believe it or not I actually really struggle with color too, it kinda feels like I have to wrestle the piece into looking cohesive while also having interesting and fun colors. I don't typically plan out a color palette before I start coloring since it feels too restrictive to me so I'll just have a rough idea of what the lighting and background is going to be and then I'll choose a base color that I paint everything on top of. I'll use these two [1] [2] as an example

My process for adding color is more or less just adding the base layer that I build everything else on top of, adding solid colors and shading with multiply and then throwing on some glow dodge and then adding on some details.

and these set the undertones and lighting for everything else that goes on top. it's a bit like painting in gouache if you've ever done that before. whatever is beneath everything doesn't just act as a background but will show through to the layers on top

Then its just blocking out the simple colors using a brush at half opacity. I don't think I ever actually choose their clothes beforehand and I kinda just go with whatever I think is gonna look the best or makes the most sense. So like with Ice and Goose in the second one, I wanted them to have contrast with each other so they would be easier to see who's who, and ended up with Ice in blue and Goose in warmer bright colors.

From there it's just a matter of using a mix of purple and blue to shade and adding in reds and oranges to make skin look less lifeless and then adding details and using different blending modes like glow dodge to add effects

But sometimes even after the 500 adjustment layers there's still some things that I still feel like messing with like making sure the lineart blends into the piece and environmental lighting such as the lighter blue reflections in the shadows here because of the water

but yeah this process isn't the same for everyone and it's just what feels right for me. I'd recommend taking something simple and figuring out what you like the most! My process changes from drawing to drawing, especially if it's more focused on the background like that one of Mav and Rooster arguing in the forest. and I tend to draw a lot of warm lighting like sunsets or blues and purples just because I like them but I rarely have a solid idea of what the final colored version will look like and instead I just start out with a general feeling I want the final to give off
