using a different brush doesnt make your art better, you can make good art with any brush, "but having a good one makes it easier!" no. making good art is a matter of skill and if your art looks dramatically worse with a different brush then thats because you are unskilled with stylizing it, experimentation is good but the idea that you need a specific brush setting to make your art good is an idea manufactered by people trying to market you their fuckin 20 dollar brush packs you wont use "i know you hate your art and think it looks bad, but dont worry! if you just buy this brush it will look better!" <- this is feeding off of your artistic insecurities to financially exploit you.
people ask me what brush i use somewhat often and it honestley makes me rlly sad. i understand it comes from a place of admiration, liking my style and how i draw and wanting to replicate and understand it on a deeper level. but its a question that ultimately flattens my years of skill and experience and work to a couple of settings on a random software made in 2015. my art looks good because i am good at art. and not because i use a 4px round brush with no antialiasing (the default pencil tool on MSpaint WIN10) its frankly insulting
#the beast speaks#retchid opinions#also this information is not only in my pinned post but in the tags of every single art post i have ever made so.#also a reading comprehension L#also to be clear im not vaugeposting somebody who just gave me an ask if it was a one off then like yeah whatever ok#its a general trend within people asking about my art as well as the larger art community

I asked my father once, "Why do you spend so much money on expensive delicacies when you could for once purchase something else for yourself?"
"Food provides me something that things cannot. It can even be destroyed easily when not properly inspected. Will you gain sudden contentment and meaning to it? no", he simply replied.
1.7 million years ago, we were hunters known as homo-sapiens, survival was our only goal, most of the time, populations are found in the wild searching for edible plants and animals to anchor ourselves from supplementing our diet and extinction.
When humans discovered the presence of fire and understood how to generate and manipulate it – this is how civilization began.
All these years, food was our ally.
The distribution of food in principle has a plethora of options. Aside from the fact that food became the medium for religious practices, taxation, and even education, we also need to eat in order to assist the body to obtain sufficient oxygen, and the cells within our bodies to function significantly. In other words, nutrients provide information to the human body. If neglected, diseases and conditions including obesity/malnutrition, arthritis, diabetes, and heart disease may arise. Food became the medium for religious practices, taxation, and even education.
Due to my dietary restrictions, I don't typically eat in the morning, but today, May 28 2021, is an exception.
The taste of Japanese cuisine has always been exquisite in my palate. The degree of tastes and boundless elements that are combined only to produce a dish that will make you want to inculcate the cuisine is remarkable. To be completely honest with my readers, I was not alone when preparing the sashimi; beside to me was Analiza Duran, my aunt - the most influential person I know in my whole existence, famed for her cooking capabilities and managing households. Because it is not the standard homemade craving that is well recognized in our country, we are willing to offer our own experience, for a Filipino basic style preparation, which are some instructions you may follow below:
[✓] The style in choosing your fish depends on the length of preservation and freshness, there are a variety of sashimi you can ponder from such as tuna, salmon, scallop, squid, and more. Smaller ones are usually best devoured as soon as they are served. On the other hand, larger ones must be kept on ice for a few hours to allow their muscles to calm.
[✓] It's fine if you don't master the art of cutting, but just do your hardest to make it as thin as possible. In comparison to others, we usually add a sprite to it before completion.
[✓] The arrangement of sashimi to the platter depends on your likeness, it's not like you're trying to serve in a restaurant. Add the finishing condiments, such as soy sauce with matching calamansi and wasabi.
Indeed, a good morning for me & hoping hindi kita nabudol!
I'm always fascinated about how simple type of food, like "lumpia" known as "spring roll" in other countries, can be regarded as a classic and valuable delicacy that you can often see at every celebration in the Philippines.
As you can see, this is merely an indication that not only will feast's instagrammable photographs and breathtaking flavors be remembered, but the sentiments we've all cherished will live on in our hearts, minds and history eternally.
Our adaptation of lumpia, due to developing trends, is identical in form and structure in which its foundation comes from the Chinese who made a meal with the use of fresh vegetables accessible in spring after a winter of largely ingesting foods that are preserved. This cuisine is thought to have been introduced to Southeast Asia by Chinese immigrants from the Fujian region, and then became famous afterward. However, let's not forget about palabok, a somewhat salty sort of noodle that will undoubtedly fulfill your hunger with its variety of toppings.
My family opted to catch up around this time of day; we are using this practice to reconcile with one other after being diverted by work and personal selves. Even though my mother was often away from us, serving in Kuwait, I always took the initiative of reaching her via messenger.
If you are able to read this nanay, we miss you.
Without a doubt, I admire and even support all sorts of consumable products available on the market, from small local businesses to relatively known fast-food chains.
It's impressive how everyone has their own techniques for surviving the pandemic, and how people has shown diverse ways of improving food choices to make it unique in the minds of the public. And I'm the sort of person that gets dragged into these expenses. The dish seen above is known as takoyaki, another Japanese delicacy derived usually from octopus; depending on the quantity of ingredients used, it is generally salty and chewy. A flavor combination of kewpie mayo and takoyaki sauce is used to conceal the bland taste of the dough. In this restaurant, there was a variety of takoyaki options to satisfy your appetites, including octobits, shrimp meat, veggie style, baby octo, bacon bits, and each with a cheese bomb. If you purchase one, I recommend pairing it with matching boba milk tea.
The only drawback to ordering this food is that my sister rejects it.
"It seems strange to me as a kid, the external element of the meal isn't my vibe." – Kristine Joy Agustin
So, readers, don't become like my sister; you were born into this world to love all of the treasures that God has bestowed on us. Create provision for discovery rather than disappointing yourself in the latter because you won't attempt at all.
Support your kapwa Filipino: Ay!!! Takoyaki Atbp. Philippians St
The aroma of grilling and heating ramen noodles soup always reaches to me, and I never complain regardless of the fact that it goes all over my clothing.
You can be very flexible when devouring this asian cuisine because there are no set guidelines on what you may combine with one another. Personally, I choose samgyup as one of my top preferences because of the extensive meat assortment, which includes distinct slices of plain pork and beef slices. Alongside from the broad meat range, we like that the seller does not skimp on the grade of their meat, ensuring that it is still fresh and delicious. More dips to experiment with are also recommended; salt and pepper, gochujang, and cheese are some of my top picks. If you truly want to compete with samgyupsal establishments, you may go all out with side dishes like lettuce, rice, steamed egg, kimchi, and more.
Truly, There are a number of businesses that provide reasonable pricing, or you may simply do it in the comfort of your own home.
To end, the beauty of food speaks for itself; without it, we would not be alive to create amazing experiences. It serves as a reminder that as long as we have food to eat, we are fortunate, and as such, we should learn to return the favor to those in need. A huge gratification to those who are working their tails and brains off simply to feed their family and the world – beloved farmers and parents.
“Cooking is all about people. Food is maybe the only universal thing that really has the power to bring everyone together. No matter what culture, everywhere around the world, people get together to eat.” – Guy Fieri
How about you, what's your food journey?

***The Top 10 Rap Albums/Projects of 2019*** are...
At the end of the decade, the rap music genre finds itself with a more splintered and diverse fanbase than ever before. What did that mean for 2019? A push towards different styles which was balanced out by a strong grassroots revival of jazzy, soul-inspired sounds that echoed back to the heyday of the mid-to-late 90′s underground hip-hop scene.
In 2019, the lanes that travel more closely to what most would consider “mainstream” rap, struggled to find new inspiration without as much artistic direction to act as a template. This created a bit of a hole for some, as the absence of new material from Kendrick Lamar or Isaiah Rashad, or the disappointing reception to highly anticipated releases from the likes of Chance The Rapper, Schoolboy Q or Kanye West, left the gate open just wide enough to allow more Young Thug disciples, more aspiring Futures, and more cookie cutter “want to be the next Drakes” to flood your streaming platform.
But let us be clear: 2019 was still a great year for rap music because the underground feasted. Scroll further, and you will see that point made by my list of the best rap projects released in 2019 (and in some cases, releases that are amongst the decades best). I used the following criteria for this year’s list:
- the album/mixtape/EP/project/WHATEVER you want to call it had to be released by Dec. 20th, 2019 (arguably still way too soon to craft a well-informed review of an artists’ project)
- the project must have at least 6 songs (arguably still too small of a sample size to compare to lengthier projects)
- these rankings are a *combination* of my own personal preference, overall quality, and how the final product compares to other work from the artists’ peers that occupy the same lane/”sub-genre” of rap music
Regardless of how you feel about this list, I hope that you visit (or re-visit) any one of these pieces of strong work and find the same level of enjoyment that I did. I loved so much rap music this year and I could not be more excited about what the future holds. On a personal note, in 2019 I found myself even more in love with my wife, feeling luckier than I have in a long time, more satisfied with my hobbies and passions, and above all else, more in awe of my child (and anyone that ever raised a child) than ever before. I became a father for the first time in 2019, so as my baby daughter continues to fill my heart, I am beginning to wonder what she will think of her father’s love for this art form that has brought him so much joy over the years...I suppose time will tell.
Salute to these artists below and so many, many others. 🙏🙏🙏
Much love to all,
Jason, THE Rap Pundit
10. It Wasn’t Even Close - Your Old Droog
Your Old Droog is a unique, stand alone artist - I want to make that larger point perfectly clear - but after I finished listening to Droog’s trio of terrific projects in 2019, and sat down to right this blurb, on It Wasn’t Even Close, I thought of three people (and not the one you think I’m going to say!): Royce Da 5′9″, MF DOOM, and Joe Pesci in Goodfellas.
I thought of Royce because more than any other artists, I think Royce and Droog both get dismissed as “punchline rappers” because of their punchline-heavy rhyme styles, but both make incredibly personal, perspective-driven music (not their fault you’re not listening closely enough). I also thought of DOOM because YOD is able to create an insular rap world with his projects that incorporate fantastic production ranging from off-the-wall to bleak as hell, paired with hard rhymes that can be both dope af and laugh out loud funny - but without the gunplay and drug dealer talk. And why Pesci?? Because it’s not always clear when Droog is going to come off with a well crafted joke, or a painful reveal of the dark thoughts behind the man...but that is what makes him such a compelling MC.
Of his three 2019 albums (Jewelry is not being acknowledged here because in the holiday shuffle I haven’t had any time to sit with it yet, but I like what I have heard thus far), the transportation themed and appropriately titled Transportation might show the most range as a song-maker, but it’s the relentless thump of It Wasn’t Even Close that lands a top 10 spot on my list. His recent work with Mach-Hommy seems to foster a free-wielding spirit in Droog, from surprise project releases to unpredictable themes. The bars come in great abundance throughout IWEC, and most of the finest moments from Droog come when he his dropping brilliant one-liners over production that does indeed point to the world being about to end (perhaps all too appropriate for the bizarre news feed that was 2019).
Your Old Droog has too much to say, too many thoughts to simply dumb down his lyrical content to create a focused song that just addresses one singular idea, so he makes the right choice on It Wasn’t Even Close to touch on as many of his manic thoughts as possible. Droog is like a great stand-up comedian that knows his audience and will do whatever he wants with his material because he knows that is one of the things that keeps his audience coming back, but within each joke is a revealing kernel of truth that should be taken seriously. Because whether you see it on stage or not, working stand-up comedians often dedicate themselves to comedy because there is no other way to harness all of the fast moving, often dark and uncomfortable thoughts in their head. I can’t say if that’s the case with Your Old Droog, but he is certainly an artist that raps with the sense of humor - and unexpectedly deep thinking - of a great stand-up.
9. Guns - Quelle Chris
Circling back to my comment about 2019′s depressing news cycle in the above Your Old Droog post (can’t be a coincidence, given that Quelle, Droog and Hommy are all frequent collaborators), can you think of a more to-the-point and overdue rap album title for this moment in America’s history than Guns?
Quelle Chris can stake a claim as having one of the greatest under-appreciated catalogues in rap history. The gifted rapper and producer has blessed us with many great projects over the years, and he tends to excel at making a point without sacrificing the enjoyment factor of his music. Much like last year’s Everything’s Fine (his brilliant collaboration with fellow dope artist and wife Jean Grae), it’s his use of satire on Guns that prevents the project from dipping a toe too deeply into the gloom of the subject matter. Guns is a wonderfully scored portrait of how the United States’ connection to violence fosters increasingly more violence, and the symbiotic relationship between violence and the tools that wield it. Quelle is not a gangsta rapper, and he does not support violence, but as a black man in this country and a rapper, he is pulled into a wide set of false assumptions. An artist like Quelle doesn’t avoid false assumptions or challenging subjects, he tackles them with a great deal of thought and care. Sure, Guns has some light-hearted moments, but at the rate that people are being shot and killed by guns in this country (especially the rate of black men and women, as wells as members of other minority groups), a successful satire is often one that leaves the audience sitting in reflective silence rather than uproarious laughter.
8. Hitler Wears Hermes 7 [HWH7] - Westside Gunn
2019 was such a triumph for Griselda Records’ journey of doubling down on their sound rather than adapting, and reaching even higher profile success by doing so. While providing less controversial cover art on the 7th installment of his Hitler Wears Hermes series may be seen as a bit of a (increasingly necessary) compromise, the collective continues to sustain a steadily growing fanbase by keeping their music honest and gritty.
While not as grounded in the traditional as Westside Gunn’s FLYGOD, HWH7 provides a highly satisfying glimpse into the world of Griselda's impresario, the best example since Supreme Blientele. That means an indulgent dose of dusty soul samples, fashion trends, wrestling references, impeccable guest verses, and a general sense of fun-loving mayhem that could only be characterized by a representative of a shining underdog of a city with a scrappy chip on its' shoulder like Buffalo. Anyone that knows Buffalo New York knows that it's a city as filled with love as it is cold during frequently brutal winters. That's the type of town needed to shape a raw diamond like Gunn, who is as unpredictable with his rap cadence as he is respectful of the great MCs around him.
Westside Gunn and the whole Griselda gang provide a vibe that brings the best out of even the most experienced rap veterans (for example, I haven’t heard Fat Joe rap this well in years). Whatever their secret recipe for success has been (besides a relentless hustle and fresh talent), Hitler Wears Hermes 7 is another great example of how the collective’s energy is so contagious that established artists are eager to fall in line with their vision, Griselda doesn’t adapt to their guests. And can we finally end this ridiculous notion that Westside Gunn isn’t a dope MC in his own right? Don’t let the sharp rhyme skills of Conway and Benny distract from the fact that Gunn brings a real outside the box approach to how he attacks a beat, he’s as fly with his word choice as his fashion rep.
7. Eve - Rapsody
Rapsody is a great rapper.
Not a great “female MC”, not a “good for a woman” rapper...so knock off that bullshit right now, it’s 2019 people (well, technically 2020 - but I meant to finish this whole post before the ball dropped, but I dropped the ball). :-/
Rapsody has been an underground darling for so long that I am not sure if you can technically refer to her as underground hip-hop artist anymore? Check the discography and you will see that the North Carolinian has quite an impressive list of good projects to her name - all of which helped build the revere that her peers feel towards her when they say her name. While she did not ask for cult status, she certainly inherited cult status as the MC that snippy underground heads like to point to whenever they feel like Nicki Minaj or Cardi B are receiving too much too soon. Of course this sentiment is completely unwarranted - and almost always driven by angst against a fanbase rather than the more famous artist his/herself - but it doesn’t stop the conversation from coming up again and again...so why doesn’t Rapsody have more mainstream success? Should she be mentioned in more conversations as one of the best rappers in the game? And should she be receiving more credit as a woman in a male-dominated genre of music that managed to build a fanbase without pumping more graphic sexuality into her music, or showing off her body?
Well, all the answers to these questions snake up to the same problem, because apart from gender, Rapsody, Nicki, Cardi, and Megan The Stallion all share something else in common: they’re all just trying to get their piece of the pie in a sexist industry (more like society - but that’s a much larger convo) and it’s 100% not their fault. Please try to understand that Rapsody is going to do what she does on a record, and Nicki will do the same, and to expect either artist to do the same type of record is as absurd as expecting Conway The Machine to make a Drake album. Whatever your gender identity may be, you are entitled to craft your sound to be as mainstream or underground as you want it to be, just do you.
So in a way, it would make sense that Rapsody would drop the best album of her career in a year where the mainstream rap scene was shallow, mostly unremarkable, and full of holes. I’m not at all saying that that’s the reason why she received more press off of Eve than on most of her previous works, but in a rare twist, industry trends did provide a bit of an assist in the publicity department. However, the acclaim for Eve has less to do with industry trends, and a lot to do with just how good the music is on this album.
Eve is a celebration of black women, but not as a “ladies night at the bar”, one time only rap album gimmick, but as a personal and informative album where every track is named after an influential woman of color, and the star of the album just happens to be a black woman that also hopes to be remembered as an influential woman of color. Eve is as much a braggadocious claim for respect from a dope MC as it is a humble diary of a veteran rap artist that’s still very much in her prime. The production choices range from intentional reinterpretations of the familiar, to fresh takes that successfully ride the line between what we would traditionally call “mainstream” or “underground”. At the end of the day, Rapsody’s Eve manages to start a conversation about the importance of black women in the history of the world, but while filling in the details with reminders that she deserves the respect of being treated as just another great MC.
6. Zuu - Denzel Curry
There may not be a more important album reflecting the sound of a specific city in 2019 than Denzel Curry’s Zuu.
His ode to the Carol City neighborhood of Miami, Florida was a long time coming. Zuu would not have been possible had he not experimented with different approaches in the past. He has dabbled in the same woozy, screaming raves of his fellow Floridian peers, and flirted with expressionism (especially on his previous album, TA13OO), but it all really came together on Zuu. A loose, more casual approach to song crafting on this album built a city on a clean slate. Much in the same way that Juvenile and Mannie Fresh’s “Ha” painted as vivid a picture of the feeling of being in the Magnolia projects of New Orelans as any city homage in rap history, Denzel Curry deserves a ton of credit for collaborating with perfectly selected producers to capture a sound that feels as sweltering as Curry’s place of origin.
While Zuu could stand on atmosphere alone, Curry is also at his best as a MC on this album. His pen is hard at work here (even though he claimed this album did not come with much actual writing), and he showcases a control over his flow and a charisma that proves that he is a stand alone artist to stay glued to moving forward. While the production aesthetic may be providing the broad strokes of color, his lyrics are adding the finer details throughout, discussing his father’s life and in general, the anxiety of growing up in a Miami neighborhood where sunny days are never promised. Zuu is a great album start to finish.
5. Marcielago - Roc Marciano
Roc didn't technically *need* to drop an album this year. His 2018 was one of the most prolific in his career, and for his increasingly less niche core fanbase, the impact on his respective lane is crystal clear, be it by open shout-out from his peers, to more subliminal homages. But it's that last point that inspires Roc Marciano to suit up and dramatically emerge from the gate every year or two. He has that Jordan/Jay-Z gene that suggests that no matter how many accolades are racked up over the years, any internet troll has the potential to get Roc's blood up. Which is why it should come as no surprise by this point that the man that gave us Marcberg, Reloaded and a stack of other revered projects, still felt the need to remind his "sons" that he is one of the Masters of his art form.
As an exercise in word choice and turn of phrase, Marcielago is more of a flex than an attempt to push new boundaries. But as a display of Roc Marci's (somehow) still understated skill as a producer, it's so much more - possibly his best work behind the boards. While less experimental with his production choices than on his acclaimed Rosebudd projects, Marcielago finds Roc doubling down on his ability to color within the lines of a gritty, soulful soundtrack to a world of seductive criminal activity, occasionally swerving outside of the lines with great intention, like a record skip, reminding the listener that this world is part autobiography, part fantasy - but the imagination of the man at the center is scary real. The piano sample alone on "I.G.W.T." is enough to provoke a smokey zone out, and the beat switches on that track as well as others (such as "Tom Chambers") are captivating because the switch-ups drive focus, not a choice derived from an overindulgence in production or onset boredom.
Many rap artists can claim to have made a great impact on their respective lane of traffic, but not many can claim that they paved their own. Roc did not invent the New York underground sound by any means, but when most of the New York crew abandoned ship, the captain stuck with it. ✊
4. The Plugs I Met - Benny The Butcher
Let's make this perfectly clear: Griselda Records has been dope af for years now, and nothing changed about their game plan in 2019 except that they had significantly more press to help continue pushing their brand forward. That press helped them put a ribbon around a tremendous year of music for them, along with a rapidly growing bandwagon of websites and online influencers that were previously asleep at the wheel.
That all being said...in 2019, the rap world really learned about Benny The Butcher. The Buffalo lyricist and Griselda & BSF rap capo has been spitting for years now, but word has finally reached his peers that he is pretty close to untouchable when it comes to this game called rap. Benny took things to another level with his short but potent dose of an album, The Plugs I Met. Much like Pusha T (an appropriate guest here on “18 Wheeler”), please do not dismiss Benny as just another street hustler rapping about cocaine dealing. It’s not the subject matter that’s special here, it’s the attention to detail. Benny’s ability to describe the life he leads/has lead, and what he has been through with his writing is nothing short of brilliant, and he is able to rattle off astute observations/descriptions with his rhymes about the world he knows at a level that I would only compare to B.I.G., Nas, Jay-Z, Kool G Rap, Push, Beanie Sigel, and other legendary MC’s that have a unique way with words when it comes to tales of crime life.
But what more can I say about Benny the rapper/warrior poet that I haven’t been saying for years? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

3. We Grown Now - Tree
Tree is a legend. If he’s not a legend in the conversations you are currently having about the best rap projects of 2019, then you need to remedy that. Perhaps you can downgrade him to “just” a Chicago legend, but I would disagree on the grounds that musically, he’s a legend when it comes to who he is as a rap artist, and I don’t really care that this album isn’t on anyone else’s top best of lists, it’s AOTY worthy material...
Tree is a veteran rapper/producer that seems to have a love-hate relationship with the rap business (well, maybe it’s strictly hate when it comes to rap as a business, but he raps with too much conviction for me to believe that he doesn’t love rapping - even when he’s jaded by it all). Why he isn’t heralded as an icon across every rap website today isn’t exactly clear to me (and I have already made too many assumptions on the intents of the artists on this list), but after being in a bit of a slumber, the purveyor of “soul trap” seemed to rise high once again in 2019, striking his fanbase with numerous projects that read as autobiographical diaries, including a dope collaboration with Vic Spencer, producer Parallel Thought, and this amazing album, We Grown Now.
Whether it’s attempting to find closure from fallen friendships, an ode to his sons, a declaration of his love for travel, or an olive branch to the past loves of his life, Tree touched on so many personal moments on his work in 2019 that it’s hard not to think that it’s all part of his final victory lap. It feels that way because Tree comes across as an old Blues man at heart, his greatest works of art often his most painful ones. While he may travel outside of music to get away from it all, put a mic, beat and writing pad in front of him, and he puts himself out there, warts and all. Give this one a spin in the New Year if you missed out:

2. Retropolitan - Skyzoo & Pete Rock
The definition of a dope New York album with no skips. Skyzoo shows that one can revel in nostalgia and positivity at the same time, that reflecting on how your home has changed can be a loving experience, even when it's clear that you would love to turn back the clock to an older, impactful time of your life.
Retropolitan is the sound of a music Mecca that thrives today because of its' past, and even when you don't hear that sound of the city within the city walls as often as you used to, it’s that sound that still propels it forward every day. By all means, you can criticize the sounds coming from "these kids today", but know that new sounds still trace back to their source material (whether you can hear it or not, the influence exists), and there will always be enough room for different rap styles to to co-exist, just as Classical music and Rock 'n Roll continue to inspire the world around us without any genre/sub-genre diluting the pool...in fact, the pool only continues to expand because of it.
Like Roc Marciano, Skyzoo is on a short list of NYC-based MC’s that kept developing a traditional east coast underground sound in their music for years, long after it was en vogue. As one of the genre’s most naturally gifted writers and storytellers, I don’t know if any MC working today is as fit to write this album as Skyzoo, a relic that survived a purging of the old guard in NYC only to emerge as part of a resurgence of underground hip-hop, sounding as spry as ever (if not, even stronger). With Retropolitan, every bit of this ode to growing up in a culture capitol feels like a child’s observation from a Brooklyn apartment window rather than a forced exaltation of times gone by.
This pairing may be the most natural for Pete Rock since CL Smooth, and no doubt the music on this album would not exist if it wasn't for timeless records like "T.R.O.Y." that continue to breathe and sound as refreshing as the day it dropped. Right now I doubt many expect Retropolitan to have the same cultural impact (as the material clearly points out, both the world and the genre are so different nowadays), but the music that derived from these two NYC legends certainly packs a wallop of quality that belongs in rotation for years to come.
1. Bandana - Freddie Gibbs & Madlib
By now it's hard to imagine that folks were skeptical of the musical union between Freddie Gibbs and Madlib. But back in 2010/2011, prior to the release of "Thuggin" (the first single to be released from the fantastic project that would eventually become Pinata) the notion of Gangsta Gibbs finding a happy union with the man that was behind classic projects alongside underground icons the likes of MF DOOM and Jay Dilla, sounded more like a fish out of water tale. Today, it would be like hearing news of 21 Savage and DJ Premier dropping.
By the time Bandana finally dropped - the much anticipated follow-up to the Pinata collaboration that many consider a modern classic - the hype had long since buried the initial questions that fans had about what the chemistry would be like between the respected artists, who once climbed the rankings within two very separate lanes. What Pinata proved was that the hard rhymes from Gibbs, when paired with Madlib's chopped up jazzy soulscapes, yield a sound that feels as beautifully organic as many of the genre's purist classic records. The biggest difference between Bandana and its' predecessor is that their chemistry has only improved.
What 'MadGibbs' achieved here was a more intimate and diverse album than Pinata, and arguably a superior one. Bandana may lack the layers of dusty underground grit which came in abundance on Pinata, but Gibbs' flow and pen game are so sharp on this album that it gave Madlib a bit more room to experiment with some sounds that don't instantly point to Madlib as the orchestrator on first listen. Lurking behind the making of this project were Gibbs' very real legal troubles, and the threat of extended prison time that not only jeopardized the completion of this project, but Freddie Gibbs' own freedom. Throughout the amazing Bandana, Gibbs does not hesitate to remind fans of how his life could very well have gone in a different direction, and that's exactly what elevates an album of bars & beats to a gripping, album of the year experience. Even with Bandana still in heavy rotation for the foreseeable future, it's hard not to salivate over what the duo could accomplish next...

A Tale Of Two Ecosystems: On Bandcamp, Spotify And The Wide-Open Future
Spotify and Bandcamp could not be more opposite. Where Spotify highlights playlists, most often of its own creation, Bandcamp sticks to the album (or any other format, as determined by the artist). Where Spotify pays royalties according to little-understood formulas that can only be analyzed by reverse calculation, Bandcamp lets artists and labels choose their own prices. Where Spotify requires working through a limited number of distributors to access their services, Bandcamp is open to anyone. Where Spotify has revenue streams dependent on ads and data, Bandcamp operates on a simple revenue share with artists and collects no information on its users.
Spotify is now worth an estimated $54 billion on the stock market, despite having never shown an annual profit. Bandcamp is privately owned, has been in the black since 2012, and continues to grow... slowly. You might be tempted to say that one is a 21st-century business, and the other belongs to an earlier age. But neither could exist at any other time.
Which poses the question: does our 21st-century business world really have to be so much like Spotify, and so little like Bandcamp? I spoke with Bandcamp CEO and co-founder Ethan Diamond to try and understand better how and why his company does business the way they do.
Article continues after sponsor message
Given how differently Bandcamp has behaved from a typical startup, I asked Diamond a fundamental question: Is Bandcamp a digital business?
There was a long pause. "Yeah, I'm not sure," said Diamond. "I think of Bandcamp as a music company first, because I think of who we serve as first and foremost the artist. And the way to best serve artists happens to be through technology, a particular model of technology that our business is based on. But we're definitely – no question – we're different than a lot of digital businesses. I mean, the mission of the company is, I think, fairly unique. ... There's this great story – there was a New Yorker article about it – about how Prince was working on his autobiography just before he died. And he had picked a co-writer and in one of their initial meetings together he said, 'Music is healing. Write that down first.' He said that he wanted it to be the guiding principle they used in the book. And if you start with this idea that music is healing, that is obviously a power that should be in the hands of everybody who has the talent to wield it. ... And so that's what Bandcamp is. That's what I feel like we're here to build – that system. And the way you do that is by ensuring that artists are compensated fairly and transparently for their work. And that is through the direct support of their fans."
NATIONAL
Comments From Spotify CEO Anger Some Musicians
Try going into an investor earnings call with that! Actually, what does a proper earnings call in the digital music business sound like? Daniel Ek, CEO and co-founder of Spotify, peppered his on April 29 with the phrase, "audio-first strategy." He uses "audio" rather than "music" because podcasting has become an important element of Spotify's strategy. But strategy toward what, exactly? Here are more of Ek's own words, from his Q1 2020 earnings call:
"When I look ahead both short- and long-term, I'm always thinking about what's Spotify's role within the larger ecosystem. And while most focus is on competition between streaming services, we continue to be focused on the billions of users that are listening to linear radio. The 20-year trend is that everything linear dies and on-demand wins. This is a trend that we suspect will be accelerated by the COVID pandemic. ... So in my mind, our competition is actually those learned and long-held user behaviors. For us, it will always be about capturing the share of time listeners spend elsewhere and prove out [sic] that their time is far better spent with us."
Spotify is focused on "capturing the share of time listeners spend elsewhere." This is why Ek talks about "audio" generically, because it doesn't matter specifically what those listeners are doing elsewhere, Ek just wants them doing it at Spotify instead. Spotify is not a "music company first," as Diamond describes Bandcamp, because music plays a role only insofar as people spend some of their time listening to it, and Spotify wants all their time. What truly comes first for Spotify is competition – the company is focused on eliminating other places for time spent listening to... whatever. If it's to conspiracist shock jock Joe Rogan – now signed to Spotify for exclusivity of his podcast, reportedly for upwards of $100 million – then it's Joe Rogan. And Joe Rogan is anything but healing. Indeed, health clearly has nothing to do with this. As Ek makes clear, even the COVID pandemic can be put to use by Spotify's strategy, as can the death of an existing medium for music, "linear radio" (more commonly known as "radio").
To be fair, Ek says he does have another mission in mind for Spotify. It's one he spelled out a couple of years ago, before podcasting entered the picture but right before the company went public on the stock exchange: he said he wanted Spotify to help "one million artists to be able to live off their art." This sounds good, especially if you're one of a million artists, rather than one in a million. But what can it mean, when Spotify's royalty rates are so low that to earn a living wage of $15 an hour, a musician needs 657,895 streams per month*? (And if you aren't a solo artist, multiply that by the number of people in your band.)
*Some streaming napkin math: A $15-an-hour minimum wage is $2,500 in revenue per month (pre-tax). Calculating Spotify streaming payout as $0.0038 per stream, then $2,500 equals out to 657,895 streams. It's important to note that this is necessarily an estimate, because each artist makes a slightly different amount per stream — but many use this average figure to estimate Spotify earnings.
It's this discrepancy, between stated goals and reality, that has led many musicians to become more vocal about their dissatisfaction with Spotify. So many that Ek himself recently complained, in an interview with MusicAlly, that: "In the entire existence [of Spotify] I don't think I've ever seen a single artist saying 'I'm happy with all the money I'm getting from streaming.' " Tellingly, Ek didn't follow this with an acknowledgement of why artists are unhappy with the money they get from streaming. Instead, he drew a rather Trump-like conclusion: they are happy, they just don't say it in public. "In private they have done that many times, but in public they have no incentive to do it. But unequivocally, from the data, there are more and more artists that are able to live off streaming income in itself."
Ek continued to swallow his foot in that same interview. "Obviously, some artists that used to do well in the past may not do well in this future landscape, where you can't record music once every three to four years and think that's going to be enough," he said. The reaction from musicians on social media to this particular statement was swift and loud. Musicians do not see themselves as audio machines, able to increase output to make up for the falling unit value of their product. To anyone who knows what goes into recording an album, and how few albums one is likely to make over a career in music, this may well have been the proverbial final straw.
EDITORS' PICKS
A Borrowed World: Streaming As The New Reality
Which brings us back to the anti-Spotify. It's becoming more common, especially among younger bands, to eschew Spotify altogether and post their digital music files on Bandcamp exclusively. [Ed. note: We've been noticing, anecdotally but with increasing frequency, that many new releases we'd like to include on our playlists don't make the jump from being posted on Bandcamp to appearing on platforms like Spotify.] But does it function as a replacement? When I talk about Bandcamp to music fans, especially younger ones, they often say, "but it doesn't stream." You can stream from it, I always point out – just album by album rather than playlist. But I can see their attention has already wandered.
So I put this other very basic question to Ethan Diamond: Is Bandcamp a streaming service?
His answer surprised me. "No," he said. "I don't think of this as a streaming service. I consider us a record store and a music community. The primary difference being that we're a way to directly support the artists that you enjoy listening to. You know, half of the sales on Bandcamp at this point are for physical goods. ... Digital has also seen really strong growth. And when you buy digital on Bandcamp, what you're buying is access. So you can grab a download – you know, there are people who want to grab the high-quality file – but you can also stream through our app, unlimited once you've purchased the music. But yeah, I don't think of us as a streaming service. Definitely."
Bandcamp does stream music – I'm still going to give the same argument to those who tell me it doesn't – but it's so far from the mission of the service, it doesn't even play into Diamond's view of it. Simply put: streaming doesn't support artists. So even though Bandcamp does stream (see, I'm making that argument again!), that's not how it supports artists. Which is what it really is about as a service.
Another striking aspect to Diamond's answer is Bandcamp's connection to physical goods. It is a digital-only business: it has no warehouses or delivery service, like Amazon. But Bandcamp allows artists to take orders for physical goods that they can fulfill however they choose – from their homes, from record labels or distributors, or from third-party merch services. Bandcamp simply takes a 10% revenue share of these sales. For bands, it's a bit like setting up a merch table at a virtual venue. (Venues, especially big ones, typically collect a percentage of merch sold on their premises.)
But if half of Bandcamp's revenue is from physical product, is it a digital platform?
"It definitely started as a digital platform," says Diamond. "In 2007, when we started the company, streaming didn't exist in the United States and our competition essentially was piracy. And the idea in 2007 primarily was that nobody was going to pay for music anymore. And it just seemed very obvious to me that if you like some music from one of your favorite artists, you should be able to support them directly. And so we built the platform to do that. My reference point for this was blogging services. In 2007, you had Blogger, Typepad, Movable Type, services that were essentially like white label services for writers – you could set up a site within minutes and tap this direct relationship with your readers. And it seemed crazy to me that if your artistic output happened to be music instead of words, you were just out of luck."
LIVE UPDATES: PROTESTS FOR RACIAL JUSTICE
Bandcamp, Much-Loved Indie Music Marketplace, Launches A Juneteenth Tradition
"And the most promising thing that happened in the early days," Diamond continues, "was we immediately saw people start to actually buy music, which was very exciting. I wasn't sure that was going to happen! And then, one of the fun things that happened was we started to look at the search terms people were using that brought them to a Bandcamp artist's site that led to a purchase. And several times per hour, we were seeing search terms like the name of an album or name of a track plus the word 'torrent,' or plus the word 'Limewire' or 'Kazaa.' You know, this was somebody whose intent initially was just to get the music – I don't know if they were thinking 'I'm pirating the music' – but they were trying to get it for free. But when they saw that they could make a direct purchase to the artist, they wanted to do that. And that just warmed my heart. So that's really what we were trying to do from the beginning, was just make it clear that this was a way to show your direct support for an artist."
Whether that direct support entails a digital exchange seems immaterial to Diamond. And the platform – unlike any others that come to mind – seems equally indifferent to whether you stay on it. Diamond says this, too, was deliberate from the start.
"That's a lot of the reason why, for a long time, there were not community features on the site. The MySpace community example that I had to go on was just all these people saying 'thanks for the add,' and posting their fliers for their own shows on sites, and basically, you know, polluting somebody else's space. So I said, 'Nah, let's just have no community at all.' And then what happened slowly evolved, because a lot of people started asking us 'Hey, you know, what are the other, like, math-rock artists on Bandcamp?' And my first reaction was, 'Why do you care?' Like, we're not – just go use Google or whatever. Type 'math rock' into Google. But then I started to understand that what was really going on here was a community of like-minded people forming around this idea of direct support of artists. And so then we introduced fan accounts, and collection pages, and discovery tools. And now that drives a significant percentage of the sales on the site. And again, that's just super encouraging."
Ethan Diamond's indifference to the time and money spent by users off his platform would be anathema to Daniel Ek. I am sure any Spotify employee who suggested that their users just type "math rock" into Google would have their desks cleaned out by the end of day. The differences are so extreme, Bandcamp may not just be the anti-Spotify; it may be operating in an entirely different world. I asked Diamond what digital businesses he feels a kinship with now, the way he did with blogging services when he started the company. He didn't name a music platform.
"I would say Etsy. You know, Etsy is similar in that it's a marketplace, right. They connect buyers and sellers, but they're not trying to create competing goods. And they're not fulfilling the goods or anything like that. So it's a community, and they're creating those tools to help connect those artists or sellers and buyers directly. And I think they offer everybody on that platform a fair deal. They've grown into a big company doing that, and I think like every company they have had their fair share of criticisms. But I feel like that's probably the closest."
Music as a craft, as a cottage industry? This may well be the future for many of us in the profession. In my own career, which started in the late 1980s, the type of music I play has gone from subculture to the "alternative" wing of the mainstream and now back, it seems, to subculture. Spotify is built for an economy of scale: it needs and wants to occupy all of everyone's listening time. My music and the milieu it is part of was never intended for that environment – I would worry about anyone who listened to nothing else! Are we, as Brian Wilson sang, just not made for these times?
Bandcamp's counterexample suggests that the problem I and many musicians in my situation face isn't about the digital age per se. It is possible to build a different kind of environment for music online, one that subcultures can recognize as their own and maybe even use to thrive. Or heal, at least, while we dream up new ways to connect with one another in the 21st century.

Luxury travel trends for 2021 according to industry experts
As part of our Independent Minds series, we asked our community of hoteliers about what the world of travel will look like in 2021. After a particularly challenging time for the hospitality industry, many of our hotels have taken the opportunity to renovate, adapt, and anticipate what the ‘new normal’ for travellers might be. From more sustainable outlooks and slow travel, to private spaces and exclusive hire, personalised experiences, carefully curated itineraries, enhanced wellness offerings, and an increased desire for once-in-a-lifetime trips, we’re feeling optimistic about the year ahead.
Gertrud Schneider, Kristiania Lech – Austria
For me, the new trend emerging is a ‘considered’ versus ‘consumptive’ approach to travel and within luxury hotels. While COVID-19 is still with us and we are navigating new protocols and assessing the safest way to run a hotel and the safest opportunities for travel in the months ahead, I feel certain that how you travel will matter more than ever.
These very extraordinary times without travelling and re-thinking the Kristiania Lech experience have made me think a lot about past travels, about the way we used to travel. A potent combination of access, ease, familiarity and habit had gradually accelerated the pace of travel, pushing us into a frenetic, consumptive frame of mind. London for a long weekend? Hamburg for a concert? St. Tropez for a party? Why not? The tickets weren’t too expensive, so we jumped on planes, with less fanfare or anticipation than my grandparents devoted to going out to dine in a restaurant. Looking back on that makes me wonder how – in the excessive casualness of the way we approached these incredible opportunities to cross borders and could be plunged into new cultures and communities in mere hours – we so often lost something.
Back when it was harder to get places, you stayed longer, you looked deeper, you expected fewer habitual comforts and you brought less of your routine with you – instead you surrendered to the foreign. My grandparents knew they weren’t likely to be in the places they visited again. They understood that each trip was a rare, once-in-a-lifetime experience, so they savoured each moment and tried to slow down time. The word – considered – comes to mind. And if this slower, more thoughtful approach is considered travel, then what we were all doing, before COVID-19 grounded us, can only be described as consumptive.
We regard each other across the decades and generations of an utterly changed world, but I know that I carry the understanding of travel of my grandparents and that it has never been as important as it is now. My grandparents weren’t looking for the comforts of home when they left home; rather, they were thrilled to settle into a place and fall into its rhythms. I believe there is hope in that approach. A future where we all think of ourselves as people joining a community for a time, offering gratitude and appreciation, mingling meaningfully with local residents, contributing something of benefit and taking only memories and a broader view to share when we reach home.
Girish Jhunjhnuwala, Ovolo Hotels – Hong Kong & Australia
Design-wise, I believe there will be a trend shifting towards de-cluttering to minimise touch-points. Urban hotels will become more modern with more indoor-outdoor spaces and open windows, as people are starting to value space and openness more than before.
Technologically speaking, I do believe that many restaurants may look into scanning QR codes for the menu and ordering to reduce physical touch-points, but this is not something Ovolo Woolloomooloo, Ovolo The Valley Brisbane, or Ovolo Central are interested in. As mentioned previously, we value connecting with customers. For me, you go to a restaurant so a waiter can explain the food to you, and for the service. If not, why not just order take-out?
We don’t believe in technology for the sake of technology. Ideas have been floating around regarding a key card that can be integrated into your mobile phone, but checking in at the front desk and being welcomed the way you should be is what makes your stay all that different. Luxury hospitality always needs human to human contact, but technology will find other ways to reinvent our spaces.
Wellness will be given a huge boost as well because of health consciousness. This trend has been on the rise for a while now but has recently become more pervasive with the pandemic, so it will be interesting to see how hotels will incorporate this into their spaces – such as how hotel gyms keep their cleanliness, keeping yoga mats in rooms, walking pads, spas, and such.
I do anticipate that the general trend of travelling will gear towards staycations and domestic travel for the rest of the year, but the travel industry has the ability to bounce back very quickly because of pent up demand. Travelling is a huge part of many people’s lives whether it be for leisure or business, and that is not something that can be replaced. Therefore, although staycations will become more popular amongst those that are wary, international travel will have its momentum back soon enough.
Dinos & Lena Tornivoukas, Eagles Villas – Greece
We see a trend for cleaner interiors, free from any unnecessary decorative elements, with an emphasis on art work to give interiors a special touch. Rooms are becoming larger, with more space to give guests the experience of never feeling crowded and offering the ability to spend more time in the guest room, without having to expose themselves to many people or crowds. At Eagles Villas, we also see a trend for longer stays, and guests extending their stay when they feel safe and happy at the hotels.
Samornpun Somnam, Keemala – Thailand
The COVID-19 epidemic has already redefined how we live, work and travel. It is undeniable that the ‘new normal’ lifestyle will mean many people working from home, or away from the workplace. We will most likely have to consider how hotels can bridge the gap that arises from this change, as many travellers may shift from holiday makers to a work-holiday status. For example, how can we meet both the technological and logistical requirements for this group of travellers, while retaining essential and authentic Keemala experiences for guests to enjoy.
Domenico de Simone, Casa Angelina – Italy
Until normality within the travel realm returns, travellers don’t want to be with swaths of people. We definitely believe that experiences encompassing social distancing — whether that’s privacy or minimised interaction with others — are at the forefront of travellers’ minds. As most of our experiences at Casa Angelina are designed and personalised for the guest, we will continue to think creatively on how we can enhance this, such as allowing the opportunity to fully reserve the spa for the day for complete privacy. In addition, we see wellness also being a big focus for 2021 as guests will want to relax from a stressful 2020. We will work to offer additional wellness-focused creative programming such as meditation and yoga on our lawn, outdoor spa treatments, and a ‘better sleep menu,’ designed to help guests have a better night sleep, just to name a few.
Leopold Botteri, San Canzian Village & Hotel – Croatia
I believe the world will be a better place after this experience. We immersed into ourselves this year and we have a new-found respect for life and beauty. I believe people will appreciate calmer, more restful places such as San Canzian Village & Hotel. I do not see a large change in behaviour in the future. We will always have the need to travel, to visit and experience. We have reached a level of development where travel is essential part of a quality life and I do not see this changing, especially in the luxury segment.
Amanda Syrowatka, Viceroy Bali – Indonesia
I think sustainability and conscious travel will be even bigger trends in 2021, and likely here to stay as the industry upheaval of the 2020 pandemic dissipates. People’s attitudes in general have changed from the pandemic experiences and I believe there is less of a barrier between brand and customer, which we have always been advocates for at Viceroy Bali and which favours independently minded boutique hotels. I see customers wanting more dedicated attention before, during and after their stays in hotels and I do believe travellers will become more accountable to their place in society – in a sense we are becoming more ‘responsible citizens’.
Thierry Tessier, Dar Ahlam – Morocco
Travelling will become more precious again. Our clients won’t travel anywhere near as frequently as they have in the past. We are beginning to have some requests for longer stays (two or three weeks instead of three or four days) at Dar Ahlam. Guests will expect to have deeper connections with local life and communities, with traditions and artisans. They will travel less but travel better.
Jeanette Mix, Ett Hem – Sweden
The demand for recreation and wellbeing will increase, while guests want to learn and to be engaged. Safety and a sense of belonging will be ever more important going forwards. We are also experiencing a new sensitivity and a stronger need for personal care. I believe smaller hotels like Ett Hem will be in favour – requests for full buy-outs are also increasing.
Panos Daktylides, Panoptis Escape – Greece
I am confident that despite the difficulties, the hospitality sector has a bright future ahead. Trends will certainly include a continuation of the sustainability trend, which is set to become even more important as millennials and Gen Z members grow older. In fact, current research shows that many travellers are not satisfied by the level of sustainability and eco-consciousness of the majority of present-day hospitality establishments. It is up to us to listen and respond to this need. Moreover, increased focus on privacy and on spending time with the group you are travelling with is expected.
Also, we expect an increased focus on fully-curated experiences at Panoptis Escape – not as an after-thought but as the main reason for travelling to that destination. So instead of ‘a visit to X historical landmark’, guests are more likely to now appreciate ‘a guided visit to X accompanied by a tasting session of food from that era, and followed by a sunset cruise so you can enjoy X from a new vantage point’, for example.

Hauntology and Nostalgia - Lecture + Seminar Notes & Set Task
· Definition of Nostalgia – the state of being homesick, a wistful or excessively sentimental yearning for return to or of some past period or irrecoverable condition also: something that evokes nostalgia. – conceptual idea of home or about a particular time in past can be real or imagined.
· Why are we so nostalgic? – ‘ on this day’ on social media apps, ‘throwbacks’ viral movements – social markers encourage nostalgia – technology allows us to explore nostalgia in a more convenient yet public way, bombarded with nostalgic images
What are you nostalgic for? – times past, old friends, family, youth, carefree living….? Indulge and re-experience these aspects again – what triggers your nostalgia – different experiences, sound, sight, smell, etc. nostalgia rising due to hard times?
· Digital Nostalgia vs Physical Nostalgia – modern media encourages it – volume of material larger due to the digital age
· Nostalgia never satisfied yet we still practice it – we chose it
· Marketing tool? Political persuasion and gain
· The ministry of Nostalgia – ‘ we will remind people of how good things used to be. Since no one can now remember a time when things were good, we all need, help to dream of a wonderful bygone age when everyone was paid in golden sovereigns, no one was or died, the weather was perfect, and you could get 200 pints of bitter for a quid.’ – manifesto for monster raving looney party.
· The poster wasn’t mass produced until 2008 which is important as it is a historical object. In 2009 it became increasingly popular due to the reaction to the credit crunch and the banking crash. Tapped into narrative of the ‘British Finniest Hour’ – is there’s a negative uncurrent – nationalist undercurrent?
· ‘Keep calm and carry on’ – Stuart Manley found a faded poster – a relic from world war two, long lost government propaganda bearing the message. Manley sold copies of poster behind his wife’s back as she didn’t want to commercialise it.
· Become a joke – a reference within a reference.
“Make Tea, Not War
Save our NHS
Down with This Sort of Thing
Keep Calm & Carry On
Stop Worrying & Enjoy Your Life
Work Hard & Be Nice to People
Make Do & Mend
Read Some Fucking Orwell
Live Within Our Means
Support Our Boys
Make Britain Great Again
Take Back Control” – The Ministry of Nostalgia, Owen Hatherley – how he views nostalgia at it surface level to what’s underneath, each line own connotations, ironic, not his views, critic on our nostalgia, historical connotations, old school nationalism driving nostalgia?
· ‘The Good Old Days’ – Frankie Boyle – mocking the concept
youtube
· What are you nostalgic for? – Matthew Frost (2015) Viva Vena – buy into the product
youtube
· Textpost – different view on nostalgia depending on when you’re born – a freedom that we missed out on – something an older person struggles to understand – a world without social media – a sense of freedom we miss and would sometimes prefer although technology offers so many more opportunities it also has many downfalls.
· What are you nostalgic for? – Mark Fisher’s Slow Cancellation of the future – why we mind the past- through artefact’s in star wars – popular entertainment
youtube
Nostalgia happens during reactionary periods, such as austerity in the 1950’s and today.
· Historically being nostalgic or using nostalgia as a form of expression in art of literature has not been seen as a good thing, rather it’s been viewed as the antithesis of progression and innovation. Miuccia Prada once said ‘nostalgia is a very complicated subject for me. I’m attracted by nostalgia, but I refuse it intellectually.’ – manifests in fashion? Choice of clothing? Retro clothes? Is this nostalgia or the same trends being recycled?
· Stranger Things – nostalgic for older viewers? Followed an old style.
youtube
Storybook sentiment has got hold of consumers looking o escape their stresses and find temporary refuge from adult responsibilities. Nostalgia marketing holds great appeal in times of uncertainty as it allows consumers to reminisce. Bringing them back to simpler, more carefree times’ – comfort drives nostalgia
·What is Hauntology? – nostalgia manifesting in products
defined by its confrontation with a cultural impasses : the failure of the future. ‘by 2005 or so, it was becoming clear that electronic music could no longer deliver sounds that were “futuristic”” since ww11 up until the 1990’a electronic music held a sense of the future, ‘would habitually turn to electronic music when it wanted to invoke the future’ In 2005, electronics don’t provoke the future any more but feels ‘ strange or dissonant’.
Haunted Technology - how nostalgia is manifesting in technology
The end of history
Culture has lost momentum and we are now all stuck at the ‘end of history’. With modern technologies dislocating us from the traditional notions of time. For example smart phones allow us to never fully commit to a moment, creating a ghostly presence or absence for us. We are almost in a non-time, due to the internet nothing dies anymore and everything comes back.
youtube
Seminar:
Part 1:
Personal notes from discussion
Steal like an artist? Our work is a perfect example of hauntology - our work stems from what has worked before - is there much stepping out anymore for example limits within the artworld.
Everything in culture is a reboot of what has come before
Nostalgia present in photography in general - childhood photos, memories - will always bring on feelings of nostalgia
As well as hauntology present in photographic technology such as film cameras.
Can nostalgia be good and bad? - Tracy Emin - Bed
Senses link us to nostalgia - certain smells
Immersed in nostalgia for comfort
Hauntology and Nostalgia can all be very individual feelings yet are very collective in their own right.
Part 2:
Watch video - free writing exercise
Surface learning - recalling basic facts, key concern to meet requirements, uncritical reproduction, lack of interest in the topic, getting the job done quickly - give yourself time to be immerse in the task, broad generalisations, basic books and lecture handouts - there our blanket/overall ideas but we should look into the to refine the part that links to us.
Deep learning - students aim to understand ideas, their key concern is do I get it, a key curiosity, critical review of alternatives, consider applications and implications, greater personal interest in topic, taking more time to explore for example recommendations by tutors, key objective is how can I use this material, trust yourself to explain this stuff in a new way, there will always be another point of view that was not given in the lecture, how can apply what has been said to my own work
Critical writing is a process you use a range of writing skills that can be challenging, time consuming and messy but gives you a different clarity on what you're researching - your work will become richer.
Criticism has a negative connotation to it but it's not just negative it is a judgement of the work - personal and others opinions of the topic, testing the evidence, consider alternatives arguments and explanations - completion can’t be reached without, a conclusion. - not just fact telling there is an analysis to be done
Analysis is a critic, investigates the evidence for and against different theories and ideas, considers alternative perspectives , reach an informed opinion, give a reasoned argument
Critical thinking - persistent, sceptical, always ask why am i being told this, who is telling me this, what am i not being told, where is the evidence to support this.
Obtain some level of objectivity - can create a prejudice if not
‘Pick anyone off the street would my essay make sense to them.
Key Questions : What is the main point to make, can i back up my argument, is the evidence relevant, accurate and up to date, is this view based on false logic
Either describing ( facts , why are these facts important) or being analytical ( pick up key issues, precise what information you use and challenge )
Set Task
For the set task I did some research into Ian Howorth and his work called ‘Arcadia’.
‘The images in this series capture a retro nostalgia and constantly question our preconceived ideas of beauty. Arcadia takes us from the serene if not metronomic seaside towns of the South to the Working Mens Clubs and forgotten factories of the North. Through his unique style and mastery of film, Ian highlights a contemporary Britain suffocated by its past whilst allowing the viewer to draw their own conclusions.’
Link to hauntology - Britain living in the past
Ironic that the photographs are captured by film.
Photographs representing an iconography and stereotype of Britain that is well known
I think the imagery is slightly before my time however it still allows me to be slightly reminiscent of my childhood for example the caravan’s and bowls on the green
A nostalgia linked to the seaside parts of Britain
‘Arcadia has been referred to in popular culture as a utopian vision for centuries. A fictional place which is fertile and bountiful. A promised land of milk and honey. Held aloft by artists, poets and playwrights as a depiction of one’s individual paradise. Now eroded by times relentless indifference to change, it remains lodged in our collective psyche as a touchstone.’
Collective hauntology? - the record player becomes more popular after 2010 - became a staple of pop culture
Hauntology technology is almost a search for a utopia - we created and created for years never fully achieving this futuristic idea we had for after 2010ish then began more to revert back to old school technology calling is fashionable.
This collective nostalgia shows how we are suck still in time , at the end of history.
Arcadia as a term is linked to greek mythology and is a poetic shaped place - a utopia - Howorths work is almost a ‘poetic’ version of Britain's past that we are nostalgic about and retreat to for comfort from fear of the future.

Jazz is a Four Letter Word
Jazz is a Four Letter Word
I need to take a break from my regular motivational Monday/Tuesday posts to address an issue that recently made waves in the internet world and most profoundly in the jazz community. The issue centers around a social media account called “Jazz Memes” and its characterization of predominantly black jazz musicians as a subject of jokes and meme culture. While some might find their page entertaining and harmless there are others (like myself) who feel offended or put-off by their material.
In a recent meme, following the “I’m going tell my kids this was...” trend, jazz memes decided to use New Orleans multi instrumentalist and composer Nicholas Payton as the subject of this post:
While this might seem harmless to some, the issue stems from the fact that Mr. Payton has made a strong stance against using the word “jazz” to describe the music he plays. He has opted to use a more culturally appropriate term “Black American Music.” For Payton and many other musicians who have been subjugated to the jazz classification, the word jazz represents a racist history that at its essence demeans and belittles the music and makes it a mockery. Mr. Payton outlines his thoughts on this essay written over six years ago:
https://nicholaspayton.wordpress.com/2014/04/30/black-american-music-and-the-jazz-tradition/
Whether or not you agree with him or not many “jazz legends” shared a common disdain for the word. Jazz in the opinions of many black musicians was the same as saying “nigger.”
https://www.instagram.com/tv/B5cgVfegT5S/?igshid=n54dr11nz2f8
The word jazz was originally spelled JASS and was a hybrid word for jack ass music. In Mr. Payton’s recent video response to the jazz meme situation he outlines how the first jazz recording (by the original Dixieland jazz band) was in itself a disrespectful slight to the innovators of the music. The band was an all white group of musicians who were not the originators of this music but instead associated themselves with “Dixieland” which is a reference to the mason dixon line which was used to separate the United States from the Confederacy. Therefore the first jazz recording is in itself a meme or mockery of the music:
https://www.instagram.com/tv/B5iuDx1Aa70/?igshid=196wdb5i4jgdx
The reason I felt compelled to write a piece about this was because I believe there has been a long history of colonization of Black art in America while simultaneously silencing black voices. When Mr. Payton expresses his anger over the post the jazz memes administrators responded in a manner that reeks of privilege and entitlement:
To add further insult to injury they did a response post to the backlash they were receiving about their distasteful meme of Mr. Payton and disabled comments. After requesting Mr. Payton come on their “podcast” they were unwilling to have an open conversation about the offense they had committed. What is overwhelmingly clear is that whoever the people are behind jazz memes they do not respect the music and they are not active participants in the preservation and continued lineage of this music. If they were they would have respect for Mr. Payton’s contribution to music and to culture and “take a seat” so they could learn how their actions may be perceived as problematic. This is only the result of a larger issue within the jazz community.
If you ask a successful #BAM (previously known as jazz) musician over the age of 35 I’ll guarantee their success had a lot to do with mentorship they received from older established musicians and teachers. The lineage continues to progress as one elder passes on their knowledge to the next generation. The masters of this music that we admire were well educated in the school of life. Many of them did not possess degrees in music and certainly not degrees in jazz. Jazz education for all its merits has created a new subculture of jazz musicians who laude and praise the intellectual achievements of the music while completely ignoring the cultural history and context this music was born in. This new crop of musicians have also contributed to the music becoming more distant from its cultural origins and from the black audience.
Music is universal and can have a profound impact on anyone from any culture. However divorcing culture from music robs the music of its full potential. Salsa dancing at a dance school in western Massachusetts is different then in a small bar in Puerto Rico with a local band playing. No matter how much you study the music, the dance, the language it’s only when you emerse yourself in the culture that you begin to understand the subtle nuisances that truly make the art form special.
I could write an entire essay series on everything that’s wrong with jazz education and jazz music in general but that’s beyond the point. The thought I want to leave is that in our current “millennial” culture of social media experts masquerading as jazz musicians and people being more engaged with their phones than each other its important that we don’t forget our humanity. It’s important that if we seek to make social change then we step up and speak out when we are compelled to do so. It’s important that we do not use whatever privilege we possess to silence others. Black voices matter, woman’s voices matter, LGBTQ voices matter, immigrant voices matter, First Nation voices matter, white voices matter, Physically and mentally disabled voices matter. The point is that everyone has a voice and each individuals’ voice and perspective is of value. The important thing if we are going to have conversations that spark social change is to know when to speak up and when to STFU and listen.
“Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.”

Red, White, and First Amendment Blues
One of the most fascinating and rapidly evolving news stories this week involves Nordstrom dropping Ivanka Trump’s clothing line, citing poor sales as its reasoning. In case you missed this, here is more-or-less what happened: First it was a simple schadenfreude-laden headline, because the Trump dynasty loves selling things and also is historically bad at it. But the collective amusement turned into incredulous outrage when Trump censured Nordstrom’s from the POTUS account, in typical 45th fashion. Then we all watched a Spicer Double Down Special in yesterday’s press conference, when he referred to the business move as “a direct attack on [the President’s] policies.” And by the time Kellyanne Conway got around to literally advertising Ivanka’s product in her official capacity as a White House adviser today, nothing was surprising anymore.
I’ve seen a lot of people note Conway’s endorsement that was illegal (which it was), that this whole story illustrates Trump’s inherent conflict of interest(which it does), and also that Spicer apparently doesn’t know what the word ‘direct’ means (which he doesn’t). But I also think this is the latest in a larger picture issue, and I don’t hear a lot of people talking about it. And that issue is that this administration is launching a systemic assault on the First Amendment.
What does Trump’s conflict of interest have to do with the First Amendment?
I’m glad you ask, Hypothetical Person in My Head! The key is both Trump and his proxy Spicer censuring Nordstrom’s business decision. The groundwork was laid when Trump criticized Nordstrom’s business decision from the POTUS account, saying: “My daughter Ivanka has been treated so unfairly by @Nordstrom. . . . Terrible!” This is because a statement from an official account that something was “unfair” can be reasonably read to carry an implicit threat. But that idea wasn’t fully developed until Spicer said this in the press conference yesterday: “There are clearly efforts to undermine [Ivanka’s] name based on her father’s positions on particular policies that he’s taken. This is a direct attack on his policies.” And it’s when a business decision becomes an “attack” on Presidential policies that the larger picture about the First Amendment starts to take shape. As it happens, these statements taken together tread awfully close to Nordstrom’s right to freedom of speech — specifically its freedom of association and freedom of expressive conduct (And also its freedom to contract, but that’s a whole other ball of wax.).
A Brief First Amendment Primer
For those of you playing the home game, the First Amendment contains more-or-less five basic rights:
Freedom of the press;
Freedom of speech;
Freedom of religion (encompassing both the right to practice religion without government hindrance and the right to freedom from government laws “respecting a religious establishment”);
Freedom to petition; and
Freedom to peaceably assemble.
Though whole treatises could be (and have been) written on this topic, the main thing to take away for now is that the government generally cannot tread on these five things. That includes all branches of the federal government, not just Congress (which is what the First Amendment literally says), and thanks to the Fourteenth Amendment it includes state government as well. (Note that it does not, however, extend to that moderator on reddit who banned that one guy for using slurs, regardless of what that guy is yelling on 4chan.)
Okay, but One Tweet Isn’t an Attack
Good point, Other Hypothetical Person Also in My Head! But this is the part where I remind you that this wasn’t just one tweet in a vacuum — it’s just the latest part of a sustained, systemic effort. Let’s go through that list above, with an eye towards things this administration has done in the past as well as in the past few weeks, and see if they hit all of the First Amendment tickyboxes.
Freedom of the Press: Check. At this point, the 45th discrediting specific members of the press (and especially CNN) as “fake news” has become so commonplace that it’s a recurrent joke on Saturday Night Live. And that skit was hilarious, but it touches on a real phenomenon that’s pretty frightening: The idea that if you report displeasure with the President’s policies, you no longer get to count as real news. This is in addition to a growing rhetoric that the members of the fourth estate are enemies of the state generally, which is popping up in everything from serious allegations that the press is “refusing to cover” terrorist attacks to random statements attacking the “so-called media” over, of all things, reporting on a bathrobe. These statements, taken in tandem, paint a picture of this administration’s general desire to make Americans mistrust news in general.
Freedom of Speech: Check. I covered this one briefly above, but let’s spend a few more minutes on it. This administration has a long-established position of disliking First Amendment freedom of speech, which predates its assumption of office — from threatening to sue the people who stepped forward about sexual assault during his campaign to threatening to jail Hillary Clinton for telling ‘so many lies’ to threatening to remove citizenship for flag-burning. Since taking office, the administration has continued this trend, issuing a communications lockdown impeding executive government staff’s use of social media, demanding that park service officials retract tweets, and beginning to dismantle net neutrality. These actions, taken in tandem, suggest this administration wants people to fear speaking and relaying information freely in a variety of circumstances.
Freedom of Religion: Check. This administration has touched upon both the exercise clause and the establishment clause within the past few weeks. On the exercise end, mounting evidence is being considered by courts that the recent executive order is intended to curtail Muslim entry to the country due to specific Islamophobic animosity within the administration. On the establishment end, we have Trump threatening to dismantle the Johnson Amendment at the National Prayer Breakfast so that Christian organizations can participate more directly in politics, and promising to make persecuted Christians a political priority for immigration. None of this is a good sign, especially so early on in the Presidency.
Freedom to Petition: Check. This one is a more nebulous concept in some ways than the others, but the freedom to petition generally involves being able to talk to government directly about issues with governance. Political texts books often point to things like lobbying, letter-writing, e-mail campaigns, testifying before tribunals, filing lawsuits, supporting referenda, collecting signatures for ballot initiatives, peaceful protests, and picketing. It’s pretty closely tied to the freedom to assemble, which I’ll get to below. But things like shutting down the White House comment line, lying about the number of people who attended the Inauguration, the forcible follow of the POTUS account by 560,000 Twitter users, ignoring one of the most popular We the People petitions in history, and repeatedly attacking the judiciary branch all implicate the freedom to petition, and also all have happened in the past few weeks. Taken together, they suggest this administration wants to make it difficult for constituents as well as other branches of government to interact with its decisions.
Freedom to Assemble: Check. This right applies both to the right to protest and to the general right to associate with other people in things like unions. Though in general the Trump administration has been a bit cagey about this one, we do see early indications that we can expect future infringement of the right of assembly . Trump’s threat to cut federal funding over Berkeley protests is a mixed example at best, but his early description of protests as “unfair,” later description of Madonna’s statements at the Women’s March as “disgraceful to our country,” and more recent iterative rhetoric that protesters are being ‘paid’ all paint a larger picture that can be separated from the violence associated with the Berkeley news. And they come at a time when several state legislators are suggesting criminalizing protest. These things suggest a broader stance against protest generally.
Why does all of this matter?
It matters because the First Amendment collectively is an important check on centralized government process. The Founding Fathers knew this — the anti-federalists fought so hard for a Bill of Rights because they wanted to have a system in place that could slow the federalist machine and prevent it from steamrolling human rights. It’s not a coincidence that the First Amendment is, well, first.
And a natural extension of that is that a healthy enforcement of the Bill of Rights, and the First Amendment in particular, prevents a lot of the hallmarks of fascism from finding purchase (particularly the intertwining of government and religion, controlled mass media, suppression of labor power, and censorship of the arts). It’s a foundational part of American history, and one of the things that does, in fact, make America great. We’ve seen a lot of discussion about whether Trump’s administration is ushering in an era of fascism, and I personally believe that it is. In order for a nascent fascist state to take root in the United States, the Bill of Rights and especially the First Amendment (along with the Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, Eighth, and Tenth) need to be bludgeoned into submission. And we’re watching it happen, one tweet at a time.
What can we be doing? (Besides getting the 45th to stop tweeting. That isn’t going to happen.)
Okay, you raise a compelling counterpoint, Final Hypothetical Person, despite the noted disadvantage of not actually existing. But there are things we can be doing nonetheless!
Resist normalization of deviance. This is basically just a fancy sociological way of saying that there is real actual societal value in stamping “This Isn’t Normal” on your forehead and yelling it every time something infringes on a First Amendment right. On a related note, Amy Siskind recommends keeping a list of all of the things you notice changing around you — experts say this can be a very effective technique for resisting normalization. She keeps a weekly list herself, and you can read this past week’s here.
Continue to exercise your own rights, especially the last two. Protest things! Sign petitions! Call your senators and yell a lot! Obviously, this is easier for some people than others, but one very real way to preserve rights is to exercise them.
Keep track of the news. You can’t know your rights are being infringed if you aren’t paying attention — but more importantly, you also don’t know when your rights are being protected. The Ninth Circuit took a big step towards protecting freedom of religion today, though that fight is far from over, and that’s really helpful to know — it’s a form of petition being successfully preserved, at least so far.
Take care of yourself. It’s the best way to keep on fighting.
And on that note, I am going to take my own advice, and save writing about today’s three executive orders for tomorrow. Self-care, folks. It’s a thing. But you’ll hear from me again soon!

Suicide is a force of unthinkable strength and volume at this point in history. It is almost banal. Kids younger than ten carry out this act with a frightening level of success, and many more fail in their attempts. The demography of suicide is presently a very interesting subject - mostly, it represents the general feeling that there is No Alternative. It is the ultimate act of isolated revolt, in its most desperate and atomized form. It is capital's preferred option for those who are discontent, as it leaves the dominant social order intact quietly, while drumming up sympathy for "those poor people" who took their own lives. It does not demand any discussion on why.
The intelligent revolutionary harnesses dominant social trends for their ends. Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini was one of the first to figure this out, in tandem with Hafez Al-Assad, Bashar's father. They figured it out in a vulgar way - by inducing those who followed them to commit suicidal acts of military and terrorist strategy. Of course neither Khomeini nor Assad was the first to sign up to blow themselves up - Allah had willed a different path for them, surely. Peasants were used as pawns, and to this day, are induced to blow themselves up for the sake of the hierarchies that exploit them and their survivors.
It is obvious that this represents some of the most extreme cases of hierarchies preserving themselves and exploiting their subjects. The anarchist is quite likely, if not practically duty-bound, to reject this. Does this mean that suicide is of no use to us? In my mind, it does not. It simply means that we would do well to approach the matter from the other end.
Presently, resources are not scarce in the postindustrial west. There are homes, there is food, the means exist to produce a brilliant standard of living for nearly all people, were those means in our hands. What is in absolutely short supply, however, is meaning. Our peers who are currently chest-beating and flag-waving their way around the likes of Trump, Brexit, Le Pen, and all variants of the anti-neoliberal, ultra-nationalist ideologies are given a prepackaged set of parameters within which meaning can be produced. If they can't find themselves a job, or a spot in the army, they can at least find themselves a sense of belonging in a hyped-up mob of hyper-emotions like hatred and fear. They can find their views and existences affirmed by the society that already exists - family, labor, positions of power, moral authority, it all stands strong and in such a fashion that the project of continuing to exist seems to be a good idea (for them).
Those who imagine another way of living see no obvious road to it, and as such, there is unbelievable inertia, apathy, depression, and suicidal urges springing up on the left and among anarchists. They do not see the world they imagine - if they are even able to imagine it at all - affirmed anywhere. We have some ideas here on this board, some theories, even some quite reasonable historical analyses pointing us in the direction that seems sound and decent. But these ideas mean very little if they do not appear to be readily practicable or of much consequence.
This puts us on the downward end of a war of meaning and individual self-preservation. Our "post-truth" world is so flaccid, and so without content, that the individual frequently sees the voluntary ending of their own existence to be a more reasonable alternative to resistance, because all forms of resistance heretofore imagined are not, apparently, of much consequence. This is more true of the so-called "liberal left" than of anarchists, but is still generally relevant for most anarchists who are not naive enough to be hopped up on ideology 24/7.
Opposition to violent means is at a low among radicals, yet violent means are notoriously good ways to get killed or imprisoned. Draw a gun at a protest and you will be ended. Organize a militia and you will be kept under the watch and quite possibly framed into imprisonment. Yet do we not see the reality that is in front of us? The nature of violence has changed. Classical combat, even updated to include the likes of guerrilla warfare, is not particularly relevant. Yet force is still the blood of history and power. Now, combat consists of the presence or absence of meaning, and the subsequent affirmation or negation of existence. Does the world around us, in how it is altered by our adversaries strategically, drive us to a place of desperation? (It does). Conversely, could we not begin altering the worlds of our opponents to be just as desperation-inducing? Could we not, on the level of the collective and the individual alike, compose targeted means of driving our enemies to suicide?
This is the realpolitik of conversion. Radicalizing people does not consist of convincing them through reasoned argument. It instead is a matter of examining the nature of a person's desperations, and addressing them by offering meaning. Luckily, unlike material resources, meaning can be created by nothing. This is why Nietzsche, Stirner, and Novatore offer some of the most relevant tendencies within anarchism today. It is also the realpolitik of destabilization. As surely as we create and distribute the means of producing meaning to those we align with, we poetically expose the baseless and empty nature of the meaning our enemies derive from the systems they interact with. If this means the tables turn and they off themselves, this is our enemies killing our enemies for us - far superior to direct violence. If it means they reach a point of desperation, where their resolve is weakened, it may also mean they are radicalized and brought into the anarchist fold, because their old ideas gave way and fell apart (I know more former nazis who became anarchists in this way than you'd imagine).
My last point: What does this look like in practical terms? I think to a certain extent we could brainstorm this in the comments, but my first thoughts are:
We gain a reputation of being the ones who get the most out of life. This means learning to Live Well. We must be seen universally as being the top assemblage of humanity that is eating the best food, having the best sex, creating the best art, and most importantly: having the most fun. Somehow, radicals have gained the opposite reputation, as being joyless guilt-mongers who lead austere and bitter lives, and infighting constantly, living in squalor, and generally having a bad time. We need to ask: What makes us happy? And begin doing that as a group, loudly and in the streets. This might be more important than nearly anything else. If we are seen as an order of existentially brilliant clowns, vagabonds, and intellectual hedonists, we will draw a great deal of interest for that fact alone - while implying that our enemies are boring and sad. Their steady diets of hatred and fear make this easy to imply - because it is true.
The point about fun makes sense only when it is situated in a larger imaginative vision of a better society. Without this element, it becomes little more than a self-righteous iteration of party culture. When we posit a clear vision of how things could be, and we do so in a manner that is accessible and viewed as being potentially close at hand, we succeed in a critical way that we have continuously failed in since 1968 (generally). This means offering visions of how life could be that are not highfalutin', distantly utopian, or explicated in dry academic terms. For all the uses of our theory, it cannot ever exist in a vacuum, nor can it exist without its proponents acting out this theory prefiguratively. This is why fiction, cinema, poetry, and comedy are immensely important. They create culture that has a vision, and that vision is participatory here and now, in a manner that gathers people together, often physically.
Clowning is a great tactic that embodies what I am saying here, I think. The clown, in her foolish attire, fashions herself to be someone who is bound to be rejected and loathed - but this is used to her advantage, to make a mockery of the processes by which individuals are rejected or thought to be fools. She empties herself out publicly in order to attain a strategic position where she can completely cut down and make fun of the world around her without firing a single shot. The suicidal person may at times feel like a sad clown, a misfit who lacks the energy required to laugh at the world that has fashioned him into this sad character. Anarchists can offer a meaning-making culture that converts the wallowing of the misfit, and all its desperation, into a weapon of high enjoyment and utter decimation of our enemies. I am envisioning roving gangs of redneck clowns on freak-bicycles, dressed like sad Rebranded White Nationalism kids, blaring country music, perhaps with pepe masks, riding near conservatives, white supremacists, and Trump supporters on the street, heckling them and mimicking the sad behavior of these people. All of this would be perceived as a joke, with no violent intentions, and inevitably, a violent reaction would be provoked, offering the perfect opportunity to both kick fascist ass (in a pepe mask) and to highlight the weak desperation of our adversaries. Entire societies of dropout clowns could be formed, with the daily intention and sole goal of embarrassing the enemy comedically - and having as much fun as possible while doing it. These clowns could also act as a buffer between police and serious protestors (we've seen some of this before in Occupy and with the Guerrilla Clown Army from Scotland).
There is a lot more to say here on these points and maybe I'll write more about it, but I figured I'd post this here for the sake of maybe provoking some interesting discussion. Not sure what y'all will think. if you read all this, thanks!

AUJIK, the esoteric sect reaching supreme clarity through its work
http://ifttt.com/images/no_image_card.png
Initiated in 2001 by Stefan Larsson, the Japan-based esoteric sect AUJIK has taken over different video platforms with its mesmerizing and unique work.
AUJIK – pronounced ‘odjik’ – is established as an esoteric sect who believes in animism and worships nature. It divides nature into primitive (vegetation, soil, humans, animals, etc) and refined (AI, robots, nano-technology, augmented reality, etc), showing in their work the bond between both, stating that the refined nature comes from the primitive and vice versa.
AUJIK also declares everything comes from nature and it is through the convergence of both refined and primitive nature, that a state of supreme clarity is achieved. It is through their work that they aim to achieve this state and do so while focusing on the idea that everything, event the most artificial things, have a consciousness and a soul.
Recently AUJIK released a new architectural video that is a collaboration with a British composer called Sion Trefor. The video depicts various architectural structures that are mainly influenced by Tadao Ando:
What is AUJIK? How did the journey for AUJIK begin?
Stefan Larsson: “It started off as a sub-branch to another brand/concept I used to work with around 2000-2005 called QNQ. I was quite fascinated by the structures of brands back then; both visually and conceptually, so I played around with various ideas and influences and then labeled them as fictional brands.
QNQ was mainly about subversive political manifestations, while AUJIK was more orientated around technology and future visions. It went through three incarnations, starting with AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) and robotics, and then combined with influences from animism and spiritualism. A few years ago I also adapted architecture.”
Why AUJIK, why surreal architectural animations?
Stefan Larsson: “The surrealist movement was probably my first art influence when I was in my early teens and long before I started making art myself, so it had an impact on basically everything I’ve done since.
I like the idea of bending reality so it twists one’s perception. I also like combining elements from nature with man constructed objects so the outcome becomes something that resembles functional structures but without any practical function.”
Stefan Larsson: “With these architectural video projects my intention was to dissolve function and practical form into a more chaotic shape that resembles nature. I first focused on separate buildings but realized that a larger scale would present what I envisioned better, so I used a whole cityscape (as in Spatial Bodies: Osaka) where the buildings were intertwined into a giant concrete forest.”
Which are the main values, core concepts or style inclinations that, above all, will always represent AUJIK?
Stefan Larsson: “I think mainly to combine elements and concepts from various fields and looking for interesting results. As an example it started with juxtaposing trees with robotics and then I have been exploring new realms that I adapted to this format. It’s also essential to have a holistic visual style attached to it.”
As an esoteric sect who believes in animism and worships nature, what is the message AUJIK wants to convey through its work?
Stefan Larsson: “It was first structured as a sect formation; just to give it an identity to build on. I was fascinated by a Japanese cult called Pana-wave laboratories as well as Shugendo and Yamabushi monks, so I came up with fictional ideas of AUJIK being a sort of esoteric cult that divided nature in to: Refined (AI, robotics, nanotechnology etc.) and Primitive ( vegetation, rocks, organic bodies etc.). It was not necessarily a dualistic perspective, but more of a fundament to create from.
If there’s a message I like to convey it’s basically to perceive and interpret all things in this world – and beyond – without limits or any rigid and inhibited attitudes.”
What other fields and inputs, outside and inside of the design world, provide you inspiration?
Stefan Larsson: “I tend to take a lot of inspiration from architecture nowadays since it’s been evolving so much in the last decade. Mainly what’s popping up in China and the Arab countries. Also I like brutalism and metabolism architecture a lot. Fashion always was an ambivalent source of inspiration. Music is without a doubt my most important inspiration though.”
Most of your work depicts the digital distortion of architecture, urban landscapes and the natural world. What process do you follow when designing your projects?
Stefan Larsson: “Since I started working with CGI about 15 years ago I constantly make things nearly by routine on a daily basis.
There’s always new stuff I’m intrigued to try. Whether its regular character animation, particle simulations, landscapes or architecture. Most of the time I’m just goofing around by doing animation projects quite fast in a day or two. For the last year I’ve been using a render engine called Octane that makes it very easy and quick to work with animations. I used to be frustrated working with CGI because of the enormous time gap between ideas and results. During that gap, there’s usually a decrease of inspiration and motivation and it’s easy to become distracted. Now when I’m able to work more directly, the spontaneity and impulse factor is a lot higher.
With some projects I had strong and fixed ideas and made many sketches before all the computer tasks. Some of these projects took between 3 months to a year to create. Nowadays I prefer to not spend more than 3-4 weeks on it.”
The new episode of your ‘Spatial Bodies’ video series project, ‘Spatial Bodies : Hong Kong & Shenzhen’, was recently introduced. Can you tell us how the idea of the project was born and the process behind it?
Stefan Larsson: “I was invited by an architectural Biennale in Shenzhen, China called Bi-city biennale of urbanism/architecture to make commissioned work in Shenzhen and Hong-Kong.
Back in 2016 I made a similar video filmed in Osaka, Japan and they asked for something like that, but with a theme that relates to these two cities. I had pretty much free hands and decided to give Shenzhen an overall design that somehow resembles computer components and circuits.
Shenzhen being the technical capital of the world where most of the components for smart phones and computers are being manufactured. The idea for Hong Kong was initially a bit more diffuse at first.”
Stefan Larsson: “I’ve never been to any of the cities before, but was really fascinated about them and actually been thinking about going there to film for a personal project before I got this offer, so it was a bit of a dream come true.
I spent 8 days there filming non-stop. Both cities are perfect to film with a drone considering the cityscapes, then there’s all the security and surveillance that made it nearly impossible to get some decent shots. It was super intense, constantly being chased away by guards and had to hide in bushes while operating the drone.
It then took about three months to complete these two videos that are 4:40 min each. I spent more than a week just motion tracking all video scenes and deciding what to use.
When I do these I make many test versions and keep rearranging everything until there’s something worth using. The video was a collaboration with a Japanese musician called Daisuke Tanabe (he also made the score for the Osaka version). I often collaborated with musicians – mainly in the electronic genre, which really boosts the motivation factor and opens up new ideas in the working process.”
What are the main trends & future directions within digital animation and what do you think of them?
Stefan Larsson: “There’s the obvious VR, AR and mixed reality. I’ve been really into that since Oculus released their early VR prototypes (Oculus DK1 & DK2). The development curve was very steep for a couple of years, but now has been slightly stagnating.
As for CGI and rendering; there’s a huge evolution with GPU-based/unbiased render engines such as OTOY’s Octane. It’s fabulous to render out ray traced animations without any glitches or flickering in just a short amount of time – compared to CPU-based rendering.
Also Unreal’s latest game-engine is highly impressive and is able to achieve photorealistic results in real-time. Then there are the nearly unlimited possibilities with Houdini if you are working with VFX and particle simulations.”
Stefan Larsson: “The whole CGI community expanded a lot during the last couple of years. I guess since the learning curve of many softwares such as Cinema 4D is easier for most people than for an example Maya or 3D studio Max.
There’s also a huge source of assets that are easy to import such as Quixel Megascans and their photogrammetry based objects and shaders. Need to mention CGtrader, Turbosquid and Sketchfab that have an enormous amount of assets that are easy to use. Everything became more accessible and user-friendly. I used to build everything from scratch, which made it limited and time consuming. Now it’s possible to create a realistic landscape scene in just a few hours.
It’s all very impressive and I’m very keen on seeing how it develops.”

A Specialty Coffee Shop Tour of Melbourne
Melbourne has long been considered a global leader when it comes to specialty coffee, and its coffee shops and cafés are no different. Roasters have been improving their approach to technical aspects of sourcing, preparing, and consuming coffee, and coffee shops have updated their offerings to meet local tastes, as trends towards both adventurous and eco-conscious options.
It’s no surprise then, that former World Barista Champion Pete Licata once said that it’s nearly impossible to find a bad cup of coffee in Melbourne.
Whilst the city is saturated with places where you can experience a great cup of coffee and satisfy your daily caffeine needs, the following five coffee shops would be a good place to start your exploration of what Melbourne’s coffee scene has to offer.

Why These Five?
With over 1600 cafés and restaurants in the city of Melbourne alone, it would take you several months to visit every coffee shop in the area – let alone select the ones offering a noteworthy specialty coffee offering. Choosing just five of them was no easy feat, and 2020 will do doubt introduce plenty more noteworthy coffee shops to Melbourne, and Australia in general.
The following five have been selected based on my personal experiences, as I’ve found them to offer an inclusive experience where you can immerse yourself in your surroundings, while appreciating the passion that goes into creating a cup of coffee.

1. Bonnie Coffee
Bonnie Coffee was founded by Melburnians Alex Zielke and Lloyd Smith, and has locations in both Melbourne and Sydney. Their philosophy is to “do one thing, and do it well”, and you can witness this in action by visiting their Collins Street branch. Located in a heritage-listed building, they offer business people and passersby a pit stop, where they can experience five minutes of calm, and a friendly greeting from staff members.
Take time to catch up on the latest news while you wait for your order, as each day’s newspaper will be pinned against the wall. Alternatively, feel free to ask staff members questions, as they’re always open to teaching you a thing or two about how your coffee, and where it comes from.
While they currently source their coffee from producers around the world and roast it themselves, Bonnie Coffee has bigger plans for this year. They’re going to be introducing guest roasters on a quarterly basis, and finding ways to create a more inclusive coffee experience.

taken: 27 may, 2018 Somewhere in Iceland
Power to truth. Also *mlem*
If it wasn’t clear, this is the same day as the last post and definitive proof that the horses were indeed not alone. Though this horse is by itself too and this could just be in two separate pastures. You’ll just have to believe me, I guess.
Look at the horse. Man, it’s a cute horse. There’s no pretention or facade about the horse. The horse is a horse. If you could see these Icelandic horses, you’d marvel at how small they are. They’re basically like Lil Sebastian from Parks and Recreation⸺not ponies, but small horses. This is an adult horse that looks undergrown but is in fact not.
For those few that somehow have stuck this long with this thing, get ready for what we call in the industry, a stretch.
I mention the horse being a horse because I am sometimes baffled by how we as humans are. “Human” humans seem to be a rarer breed than “horsey” horses nowadays. Have I lost you? Let me explain.
One of the key differentiators of our species (apart from opposable thumbs) from so many other species out there, is our use of complex language. Animals speak, just as we do, but there’s a beauty in how simplistic it is. In the immortal words of Jeff Winger from the TV show Community: “You know who has real conversations? Ants. They talk by vomiting chemicals in each other's mouths. They get right down to brass tacks”. Animals communicate purely in utilitarian fashions, as far as I’m aware (if someone knows enough zoology or animal linguistics to inform me otherwise, I’d love to hear it). “There’s food here!” “Watch out for the predator!” “Come drink water!”, there’s little room for subtlety or sarcasm. Humans, I guess in our dominance as the apex predator of this planet, have developed enough of a sense of comfort that we have had the ability to develop this “complex language”. We can be subtle, indirect, sarcastic, facetious and more, and our message is still somehow generally conveyed to out audience or conversers. There’s no need for utilitarian dialogue in our society. We don’t want to hear if we look fat in an outfit or ugly in a hat, we want ourselves to feel better about ourselves and our place in this world.
Somehow, in the pursuit of that feeling, the feeling of satisfaction, some people take the route of least resistance and start to lie with gleeful abandon. It’s like in Avengers: Infinity War when the Collector asks Thanos, “Why would I lie to you?” and Thanos replies, “I imagine it’s like breathing for you.” Seriously, it’s appalling the level to which people will lie, cheat, manipulate, and con just to get ahead. Now, before anyone (any of those three readers) who calls me out for high-horsing (no pun intended) on this matter, I openly admit I’ve told my fair share of lies. But, to the best of my knowledge, I have not done it ever in a work or academic setting to better my standing. Beyond lying in professional settings, disingenuousness is perhaps my least favorite quality in a person. Any of my friends (I hope) would know that above all else in a person, I value genuineness above all else, in whatever form that may be. I think I have a pretty good read on people, but other people are not blind to that kind of stuff either. That “bullshit meter” is something I think every one of us develops over time just interacting with other people. Isn’t that kind of nuts, how ants just barf their feelings to one another while we need to develop an implicit metric to decipher other people simply being honest or not?
I don’t say all this because I’ve recently been wronged or lied to by someone. I think I have distilled and retained a social circle which at this point is open enough to be above-board and not have to lie to each other and me. It’s more of a trend I’ve seen in amongst others from my university and high school, who are so affectionately called “the snakes”, as well as on social media. I’m not going to necessarily dig into those real-life “snakes” right now because it’s beyond my understanding or energy to engage with those kinds of people right now. I manage to skirt my way around them enough that they don’t overly affect my life right now. Maybe I’ll touch on them in a future post.
Just recently, a friend of mine was talking about how bored and isolated they are where they work. I suggested they meet up with someone (classmate of ours from high school) in the same city as them and the immediate reaction was of rebuke, simply due to that someone’s social media presence seeming put on and artificial. On that level, I get it. Social media is perhaps the means to the end of fulfilling our social satisfaction and external validation “needs”. But who really dictates that need, and where does that need stem from in the first place? I can’t hope to understand everyone’s internal struggles and or insecurities, but I know personally, it’s something I struggle with myself, finding satisfaction in myself and my work. It takes an effort in having to myself “I am enough”. I’ve never thought to look to social media for that validation I sometimes seek myself, but I get that people do. But I think in that quest, sometimes people come across as though they’re showing off, virtue signaling to others on how to act, even if they don’t intend to. In an effort to seem “human”, flawed, and trying to be a better person, they invariably look like a “snake” and often unrelatable to the trained eye.
Before I sound hypocritical, I get that social media is at its core about a romanticized version of your life, and I am just as guilty in portraying my life in that manner. It is the modern-day photo album, that doesn’t necessarily always dig into the bad times or the fears or insecurities. It’s just the new way to remember the good times when you’re older and click back onto Facebook or Instagram. You won’t remember how you missed your flight or got caught in a rainstorm at the beach, but you will remember snorkeling and that dope meal you got the first night in and those pictures you have. It’s seldom a diary of some sort (or maybe it is for some people). It provides a fleeting comfort of how we think our lives should be⸺perfect, happy, never sad, always with friends, helping out others. But life is rarely like that. it’s messy, sweaty, tear-filled, occasionally solitary, bored, tired, worn, bruised, and battered. There’s nothing wrong with sharing that pristine side of yourself online, but in my experience, it will never solve that growing underside of things if left alone. It is uncomfortable to face those demons, to grapple with the pressures of daily life. But it never gets better just festering and growing. I found all that stuff for me really boil over and affect my life adversely within the past few years and ignoring it, in hindsight, didn’t help me.
I don’t and probably may not ever truly understand everyone’s challenges in life, but I know that trying to mask it online or mask it in person doesn’t really help. It may be a band-aid to a larger wound that may grow septic if not treated. Like I said, I’m not saying to post pictures or videos of you crying or talking about everything online unless that’s your thing (which by all means, you do you), but being human is to embrace the messiness and imperfection of life. Talk to a friend, talk to a professional, journal, blog, write in a diary, punch it out in a martial arts class, workout, whatever fuzzes your peach, it’s better to face it than hide from it. Molt that snakeskin and horse around. Be honest.
Well, this got a bit long once again. Social media etiquette and my presence there is something I’ve been thinking about since I joined facebook in high school. I don’t expect anyone to necessarily share my views on this stuff, but I would hope there’s some resonance on the idea of honesty and being genuine to one another. Also, the process of crystallizing my thoughts into actual written words isn’t super easy since I’m a pretty crummy writer so getting these cogent and short is a challenge in itself. Maybe I’ll start including a tl;dr on these things.
tl;dr - begone sneks
