Animation idea that will never be made because my hands are as stable as my mental health, and my patience is as short as my will to exist (part one).
Since I can't do art, I've decided to write down the ideas I have for art/animations.
This idea is for the song: "Please Don't Tell My Father That I Used His 1996 Honda Accord To Destroy the Town Of Willow Grove, Pennsylvania in 2002" (yes, that's the actual title, look it up (i say knowing no one's going to see this))
(opening):
(lyrics 1): "the last time I stole my father's keys"
(scene 1): the song opens with a girl, wearing a face mask, jeans, skirt, plain white shirt, and jacket draped on her shoulders with some hair covering her eyebrow, sitting on the edge of a cliff as she plays the guitar and sings the lyrics.
(lyrics 2): "I couldn't have been older than nineteen"
(scene 2): the previous scene is covered in smoke which fades to show a young man with stubble wearing a jacket and jeans siting on the edge of his bed before he quickly gets up.
(lyrics 3): "I hightailed his car from New Jersey to Willow Grove"
(scene 3): the man approaches his father's car before getting in and putting his hands on the steering wheel.
(lyrics 4): "And you could not see their street signs through the smoke"
(scene 4): the man takes a deep breath in and turns the keys as he breaths out before it transitions to the instrumental scene.
(middle):
(instrumental 1): this scene is a scene of the man driving while the background changes before he finally reaches willow grove and gets out of the car.
(lyrics 5): "Between the dumpster diving, vandalizing"
(scene 5): the man is shown digging through a dumpster and then spray panting the building next to the dumpster with a long-haired young woman(wearing a dress covered by a leather jacket).
(lyrics 6): "Suburban streets and disturbing the peace"
(scene 6): the scene shows the man and woman walking through the town before the man(who is walking in the front) starts walking back words while wooing/yelling while the woman laughs.
(lyrics 7): "Everything we passed, we smashed"
(scene 7): shows the man and woman walking through the town before the man hits a trashcan with a baseball bat.
(lyrics 8): "It was broken pavement and shattered glass"
(scene 8): shows a s few different shots of spray-painted buildings and signs, dented/knocked over trash cans, and broken windows.
(lyrics 9): "And you could not read the street signs through the smoke"
(scene 9): a close up of the two young adults laughing, smiling, and dancing (in that carefree, just for fun, mostly just random moving of the arms and head type dancing, and don't forget the pointless spins) while they head towards the car. there are also some shots of the stuff they messed up (like street signs).
(lyrics 10): "Just afterthoughts passing all of the laws we broke"
(scene 10): shows the two in the car driving deeper into the town passing all of the stuff they did.
(lyrics 11): "Considered violent and reckless by North Philly detectives"
(scene 11): shows the man throwing a rock at a window which bounces off and hits him in the eyebrow causing him to put one hand on his eye and one on his leg before the two start laughing before they start walking again, they man's eyebrow bleeding some
(lyrics 12): "We occupied the space where we'd never have a thing to lose"
(scene 12): shows the man walking through the town backwards with his arms behind his head looking at the sky while the woman walks with her hands in her pockets both smiling and looking like they are at peace (hope that makes sense), and then a close up of the man's face with the moon reflected in his eyes.
(lyrics 13): Between the bong rips and knife hits
(scene 13): shows the man smoking and the woman flipping a pocketknife while walking.
(lyrics 14): "Protestant booze, stick-and-poke tattoos"
(scene 14): shows the woman taking a swig of whisky from the bottle while the man cheers her on and then the two running past a tattoo parlor.
(lyrics 15): "We were just over-privileged youth seeking something to do"
(scene 15): shows the two slowing down as they reach the car.
(lyrics 16): "And I could not see my street sign through the smoke"
(scene 16): shows the two entering the car before the man revs the engine and takes off speeding past all the stuff they did.
(lyrics 17): "Just an afterthought rushing past all the laws we broke"
(scene 17): continues to show the two in the car speeding past all of the stuff they did before showing the woman looking at the man with a small smile (*cough cough* crush *cough cough*).
(ending):
(lyrics 18): "When the morning came, I woke up in bed back at home"
(scene 18): shows the man waking up in bed with disheveled hair, a clean-shaven face, bags under his eyes, and a band aid on his eyebrow.
(end scene): as the music fades out the scene fades back to the woman on the cliff no longer wearing her mask looking up at the moon with her hair no longer covering her scared eyebrow.
That took longer than I thought it would. I still have some ideas for these characters so I'm gonna need to come up with some names.
If somehow someone sees this and wants to make it, feel free, just let me see it when it's done and credit me I guess.
If you read all the way to this, thank you.
I listened to that song SO MANY TIMES while writing this.
#writing#art ideas#since i cant draw i'll write#its a 2 minuite song#i spent 2 hours writing this#i was listening to that song the whole time

Hi! its anon again :,D I'm thinking about J&A again... as much as I hope for more material for them I wonder what they can really do story-wise... I've been pretty sad about them from jins birthday up until the cover song annoucement and while im deliriously happy that they're getting a cover song but it feels like everything we get about them is just out of pity or small font last minuite stuff, idk even the cards they use in the promo art is turning 5 yrs old this year.. sometimes i just think to myself "what can they really do with them storywise?" they've done the whole revival event thing and while i feel like theres a million and one things I want to learn about them I still cant help but feel a bit doomed about the future of their characters
hey anon! thank you for your ask!
i totally get you. all of your concerns have been mine as well for a pretty long time! and it’s so true that most of the things done for them are out of pity lol (they only got shinsekai cards because happyele didnt want sora to be the only 3* card). ever since es2 era, genuine relevancy has been scarce but there were Some good things that came out of this era.
personally, i believe theres still so much they can explore with jin and akiomi as characters and their past. some might argue that we already know so much about them, but really. i feel like thats only in the case of jin. and even then, there’s a lot we don’t know about what happens behind the scenes (see: good-for-nothing son and bad teacher 2).
there’s potential, especially with akiomi. portrait has provided so much insight of how she operated within the modeling industry, her perception of the entertainment industry as a whole, and her initial goals. as well as giving explicit information about her family and showing how she took care of model trio. but as far as the intricacies of akiomi’s idol career, we only have pretty vague information about it. yes, we know that akiomi’s career flopped horribly due to super idol sagami jin’s reign. we know that she wanted to stand by his side, but was swept away by the new unit system the idol industry adapted to. akiomi worked substantially hard to be where jin was at, but realized hard work was not the only factor that took into account of success.
but i think there’s more meat on the bones! what can we say about akiomi’s unit? what kind of unit were they? how did they treat each other? can we speculate that akiomi’s cold behavior towards her previous unit due to not only just it getting in the way of grasping the super idol status, but also because the other members outcasted her? resented her? that’s what i’ve been curious about the most. she also mentions a “friend” she has in the beginning of guilty of perjury. it’s most likely a detail that should be overlooked since it’s minor, but i wonder about akiomi’s social life or if she even has one that she has to balance with work.
i mean. they could still come up with some other shit for jin and akiomi, i believe they can. but, i’m focusing more on what’s been lacking for a while.
one thing i would like to point out though, before i talk about the next part, is regarding jin & akiomi as a unit. officially, jin & akiomi is listed as an unofficial unit. and this is easily notable that they have never performed with each other. “but what about in rainbow?” within project saga, jin and akiomi performed within rain-bows and ba-barrier, not as jin & akiomi. there were no mentions of the unit. and even though rainbow stairway IS the song associated with that event, sure we can assume that they performed it during project saga, but we all know that it’s merely for happyele’s real life marketing purposes. speaking of that, yeah. jin & akiomi is meant for real life marketing purposes considering they are the only adult characters with singing voices. therefore, happyele wants to capitalize off of what little fans they have. very… rarely i guess. anyways
here’s what i could imagine them doing if they wanted to do an event with jin and akiomi. firstly, i believe it would be extremely ideal to put them in a tour event. there wouldnt be a song happyele would have to worry about. this would also clear up anything about jin and akiomi not being an official unit within the canon enstars storyline. and typically, bloomed card illustrations for events show the characters in their idol outfits performing on stage right? they dont Have to make the bloomed illustration a current era jin/akiomi card. they Could use their younger selves. for instance maybe an illustration of young idol akiomi performing alone but the unbloomed is her current self. just like how the guilty of perjury cards are set up. it’s honestly not impossible. and not all tour events have to have paid mv outfits (ie. obbligato). they Could bring up things about their past still and give more commentary of how the previous system operated and how the transition affected hard-working idols like akiomi in more detail.
this is very akiomi-centric since its objectively fair for her to receive more content in this era. (i’m jinP) but in terms of uncovering more of jin’s story i mean. same would apply. don’t have too many thoughts about it. mainly because jin already has a 5*.
but in terms of a song event. actually. even if we have all these plot holes such as jin&akiomi unit inconsistencies, anything could happen. a song event theoretically could happen whether it be their current selves or younger selves. how? SSVRS. it’s a virtual reality system that was created by switch i believe. they used it in the SS story, shinsekai with valkyrie. in which young jin and akiomi showed up. but, it was only their avatar models and it wasn’t jin and akiomi operating it themselves. natsume speculated that jin was the one that gave permission to some strangers to use his old super idol sagami jin model, but only under the condition that idol era akiomi would perform alongside his avatar as well. he concluded that jin wanted to see them perform as their younger selves since they were never able to and found solace through the VR system.
a pretty OP system within the story would be good news for us senseiPs, but happyele obviously isnt that great with implementing the senseis in anything, aren’t they? and this isnt even the last time they used SSVRS because the mv for believe 4 leaves takes place in SSVRS. so obviously, they are capable of making something like that for jin and akiomi. given maybe they want to make models for their younger selves or new outfits for their current 3d models.
there was one last thing that was the most important factor for me that left me delusional for so long and it’s the main reason why i still believe an event could happen. i’ve mentioned this many times on twitter (though i feel like i’ve mentioned these things in general a lot on that site), but it’s the lack of accessibility to jin and akiomi’s homescreen winter outfits. these outfits were officially shown in antique legend around the end of january 2021. normally, if they werent going to have cards to unlock these outfits, homescreen outfits like these would be unlockable through the ES coin shop easily. however, after almost 2 years, we still can’t unlock them. this is why i believe that eventually, they’ll get cards within an event so we can unlock them through their idol roads. a former delusion was also the fact that fusionic stars and surprising thanks official unit covers were typically released with new unit song album cds. and i assumed that jin and akiomi would eventually get one so their official mixes would come out (like the ensemble taisou album). but it’s been 2 years. i don’t know. but yeah. it’s these outfits that have been dictating it all for me.
“it could be the fact that happyele could’ve forgot!” sure, they forget the senseis sometimes. but you have to remember that when jin and akiomi’s old es1 teacher outfits were displayed in a story, they were immediately released in the ES coin shop. when the shinsekai cards came out, only their idol era outfits were unlockable. when portrait akiomi was released, only middle school akiomi outfit was unlockable. therefore, what makes the winter outfits an exception? we even have birthday editions for their winter outfits (bc they were born in winter) but not even the original ones? it’s strange. it drives me nuts. but its one of the shreds of hope i have for anything jin and akiomi related.
anyways, yeah. these are crazy mental gymnastics i go through on a daily. i am somehow hopeful for this year though. for sure, we are getting a new jin card so i’m looking forward to that. and i don’t think this will happen but i hope jin and akiomi get their own personalized outfits and mv for their new cover song. did you see that the song they’re covering is a gay pride song? i cried
here’s to 2023 being the year we could probably get something as good as portrait again

CHARLOTTE CARDIN RELEASES NEW SINGLE “LONELY WITH OUR LOVE” AND ANNOUNCES A WEEK IN NASHVILLE EP DROPPING ON MAY 17
Award-winning Canadian singer-songwriter Charlotte Cardin announces her newest EP, A Week in Nashville, to be released this Friday, May 17th via Cult Nation. Her new song “Lonely with Our Love” is out now.
A piano-focused track, “Lonely with Our Love” is a somber ballad about a crumbling relationship. Cardin’s powerful vocals are at the forefront of the track as she asks her partner, “Are we even happy anymore?” The single’s reflective nature captures the tone for the rest of the EP, showing her stepping into the personal lyricism that has captivated millions of fans worldwide.
“Loneliness is such a universal feeling, but there's a distinct kind that comes with being with someone. And that's the heart of "Lonely with Our Love,’” shares Charlotte. “I wrote this song with the extremely talented Gabe Simon, and it was one of those rare, magical sessions where the song just unfolded on its own. We wanted to capture that complex, paradoxical feeling of being alone together.”
The single and upcoming EP follow on the heels of Cardin’s 4-track EP released in November 2023, Une Semaine à Paris. Just a few months prior, she released her sophomore album, 99 Nights, which gained praise from outlets including Billboard, NYLON, Complex, and more and won the 2024 JUNO awards for ‘Pop Album of the Year” and “Album of the Year.” Looking ahead, next month Cardin will embark on what is set to be an expansive international run of shows, including multiple dates in France and Québec, as well as stops in Luxembourg, Belgium, and Switzerland. hhhh alright im game @missingno! This is gonna go more or less like a pinball.
1. LISA: The Joyful - 666 Kill Chop Deluxe (Noisemaker's Remix) 2. Aaron Smith - Dancin (KRONO Remix) 3. PinocchioP - Last Continue / ピノキオピー 4. OFF OST: Minuit A Fond La Caisse 5. Glass Animals - Hazey 6. Isle Unto Thyself · ミラクルミュージカル 7. Center Stage - Capital Cities 8. Disturbed - Watch You Burn 9. Shinedown - Asking for it 10. grandson: Maria (RATM Cover)
I listen to a lot of different music, and im honestly shocked none of the classical found its way in! also, just as a warning the first one can border on straight noise.

also did he jump is the trans/autistic/childhood trama anthem too (warning for talk of suicide and the bullshite autistic kids/any kid deviating from the norm goes thru).
like it was soo sexy for the zounds to wright all of this and more:
"Never turn my back on society Society turn is back on me Never tried once to drop out I just couldn't get in from the start."
... yea it makes me tear up
“Teach them just how they should play For the ones that start to stray Cut them off till they obey”
“Our little friend was not the type To want to have to stand and fight Bully boys all could pick Upon the lonely little kid The grown ups all looked hard and long Said "He's got two feet he can stand on" We never like the sickly ones The boisterous ones are much more fun
“He found it hard to socialize Cause when he laughed or want he cried In the wrong place he'd be chastised An idiot to be despised Never learnt to play the game the way That your supposed to play Never learnt the things to say Or lock emotion safe away”
... just... yea. being an autistic kid is hard.
“When I was a baby my mummy told me If I was a bad boy daddy would scold me When I was a baby my mummy lectured If I was a good boy I would be rewarded”
“When I was a little girl my mummy told me Had to make an effort to make myself pretty Got to get a husband, got to have a baby Got to be a credit to the rest of the family”
both these make me feral....also its the same singer,, like i am my mother daughter/fathers son, they way you are both...
“Mummy, daddy, what more would you expected In your eyes I'm not to be respected Take you on but I'm just one reflection Of the values that you hold and the way you see them”
but i always sang it as
Mummy, daddy, im not what you expected In your eyes I'm not to be respected did you want me I just want a reflection Of the values that you hold and the way you see them
so... birdie making lyrics more trans 2/2
also the chorus devolving into
All the world can not be wrong It must be me I don't belong." "All the world can not be wrong It must be me I don't belong" "All the world can not be wrong It must be me I don't belong" "All the world can not be wrong It must be me I don't belong" "All the world can not be wrong It must be me I don't belong"
is a autistic/trans mood
and then...
“Now that I'm older, I know that you scared me But I don't hold it against you, though it damaged me sorely I know you're a victim just just like me You can feel the pressure just just like me”
its about the cycles of abuse and generational trauma, and in the queer most neurodivergent way possible.... its 8 minuits and 13 seconds of pain, truth and justified fury at a world that forsook me.. its Thee Song.
its made me cry about different things in different sections over the years,,, its the song that gave me a voice.
#music#trans#autisum#dont look at me im going insane over my tiny bands again...#but yea listen to zounds...

INTERVIEW WITH MINUIT DE LACROIX
Minuit is not a character, is a being of flesh, bone and spirit that appears on the Tijuana scene around 1994 or 1995. First, with a series of drawings with gothic and dark imagery. Later he started to roll tapes with noises, and then achieve a strange combination of industrial, goth, pop and classical music, which did not go unnoticed.
Later, he achieves an unclassifiable style. Thus, we find someone with great talent in production and execution, also collaborating in projects such as Mosquito. Currently, who at the time was also called "an avant-garde talent not recognized in Tijuana", lives in Europe, making music and collaborating with all kinds of artists, here is an interview.
THE MYTH "From the beginning, some time ago, the way to know it is in the lyrics of my songs. Traumas like the breakup of my long-standing relationship with a witch, have changed my ability to express what I am, because it is your heart that you put in the songs and that is what I believe that goes to show the personality of each artist".
"If you remember, I started drawing for several fanzines before anything else. Around 1994, I started to read live poetry and roll some experimental music cassettes (influenced by groups like Art Of Noise, Orb, Skinny Puppy, Einstürzende Neubauten, Tear Garden and Mr. Bungle). With that I opened the shows of many local bands here and in Tecate. By then, I had already graduated from the music academy".
INFLUENCES "Hmmm ... Well, I grew up under the influence of Renaissance and Futurism, they are polar opposites, but in general, almost all the artistic periods have influenced me in some way. Aesthetic encounter not only in the music of the world, but in all the arts, feminine beauty and architecture. All those things are very important factors for the creation of Minuit".
THE OBJECTIVE OF INVOLVING IN VARIOUS PROJECTS "It is a return to rebirth, I can not grasp the idea that you owe it to one thing alone. Interestingly, the first time I appeared on a cultural calendar, they put on "multimedia show". I have had the good fortune of participating in two films and a short film, I am working on two others of a kid who makes independent films here in Tijuana and I have received a couple of proposals from other people. I'm very interested because there is not a big stretch between the characters and the actor, I'm terrible, but nobody stops me".
DISTANCE BETWEEN THE PAST AND THE FUTURE "In my drawings, having gone through a surreal stage, i stop doing it so as not to repeat the same technical errors. Poetry turned into prose, and although my songs have a style that still does not disappear, my musical arrangements became less and less complicated".
BEING A REFERENCE OF THE TIJUANENSE "UNDERGROUND" "I do not know the references, because in Tijuana there is no longer a underground like there are in many cities of the republic. In one stage the scene became a society and many people decided to follow trends. One thing is to have ideals and stay working with your concept until you do it and another thing is to leave aside what you bring inside and do whatever it is that you want to be a success. I know people who sacrificed their identity for fifteen minutes of fame and not only is it a pity, but musically it became a shame".
MINUIT SPEAKS ABOUT MINUIT "Well, for the time being I have dedicated myself to producing other artists, recording the best I can, writing and participating with different young creators. When someone sees a guy with long hair, they think he's a rocker. I do not have a goal to see myself in such a way, but I know that there are people who see me in different ways, but people will believe what they want to believe and that does not alter my way of being. What interests me is to be active in different projects with different individuals and different women (ahem ...) ".
THE SCENE "I've watched from afar a handful of bands in Tijuana that have the potential to become part of national rock, it's just a matter of not losing it. As for the Tijuana electronics, I see that there is an emergence of young people who are experimenting and I know that they can take their ideas to a foreign audience ... ciao ".
A MOMENT OF TIDE To reflect a little what happened at the time when Minuit appeared on the scene in Tijuana, I leave this with what I collaborate on Trac! Trac! Trac! about TIDE in 1997. The text is originally in English.
TIDESTORY PER MINUIT TIDE has finally released the long awaited new recording, which is called Back Hand Fourth. After three previous attempts in the study, they have finally succeeded. "We have been trying to release this film for a year and finally we have achieved it," says Italian keyboard player RuBella Badoglio. Eccentric, TIDE is one of the most constant musical ensembles in his musical work currently in Tijuana. Despite its taste for the abstract, TIDE stands out as being of that rare species that has its own vision and sound, not because they want to sound different, but simply because they ARE different. Therefore, TIDE has managed to generate loyal followers, which are given by the recommendation of others.
I had the good fortune to talk to them. I hope you enjoy.
Back Hand Fourth, the new recording, have you heard it ?, "Yes, in fact, it's already been recorded", says Why? Known: A Rider - singer and composer, besides not so virtuoso guitarist-.
M: "Thats rare! (laughs), it's more strange than the others. The sounds are more demented, we're doing more analog overdubs live, a lot more weird things. Everything had been more acoustic in the past. We definitely try to make music for people's brains more than for anything else. It is more intense on this occasion because of the nature of our history. They are more intense songs, this makes it more rare and more professional at the same time ". October 15, 1997 is the date where they celebrate 2 years of launching what they call "settes".
"I think it's the last TIDE recording for me," says MALice-Terror, vocalist, who says: "It's the most beautiful and at the same time the most difficult recording we've made. I feel that it reflects all the fights that have taken place about where we are going with this. " The difficulties in developing Back Hand Fourth, were from the beginning to not be satisfied with what came out initially. The first problem arose with the same formula with which they had previously composed. In October of 96, the recording was finished, but in December it had not been released due to technical problems with the editing equipment. In January of 1997, RuBella Badoglio moved to Sicily, Italy, which caused her to start working on her own solo project, SpunoS.
M says: "We had to delay the launch date indefinitely." FatAlien Youth was out of the project and Why? AKnown: A Rider? began to disappear little by little after recording: "I think I was angry and bored, totally annoying to say the truth. I was on the edge, I felt like a school psycho!.That's how I describe that moment in my life". MALice-Terror also accepts his interest in leaving the band: "I had to review what happened in my life, mainly I was wondering, what do I do with these people? "
"If this had a soundtrack, it would undoubtedly be that of the sound of turbulent violence, so I would describe it", says RuBella Badoglio: "I really appreciate our relationship as a valuable jewel, but it is only possible to make a song if each one of us decided if it is a good step for TIDE. I think it's in all aspects, a recording that is very difficult to hear, in particular it took me a long time to like it, "admits RuBella, who also adds:" If someone else heard this album for a month, it would end to please him, it makes sense to be this way".
MAL-ice Terror, on the other hand, is more direct about it: "It sounds good, it's a great album. It is very different from what I had done before. I think we achieved a real sound, the guitars flow delicately. Never, in fact, I've heard something like that before it was recorded, I'm perfectly happy with what we were trying to capture on the recording. " RuBella agrees: "This recording has a greater diversity than any group in a demo has musically. TIDE has become a band with a sound, which was a necessary evolution, but ... ". MAL-ice says: "It's very natural, together with a lot of people who start playing music and obviously, from there you have to come out with your own sound without trying to look for it, you can ask that to Staura or Bodhisattva and they'll ask you they are going to say, A SOUND IS BORN".
UPDATE After this interview, Minuit explores Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum and other sites of the Riviera Maya, where he starts with photography, exposing in two groups. Likewise, it explores sounds through experiments, which were used in various events.
Obtains a partial support of the Program of Support to the Artistic and Cultural Promotion for the registry of sound investigation in Basque Country, Catalonia and Madrid of sounds of the nature, as well as of environmental noise of transport, which leaves in a disc called Luto Ibérico , which appeared on CD and digitally through Abdicate Cell, netlabel in Norway.
He starts a dance music project called Random Rooms, with which he toured in Spain, culminating in Barcelona. He later started MDL, a minimal techno project, with which he has participated in events, a film in Poland and a short film in Germany, where in Berlin, he has presented concerts with CDM. He teaches electronic music courses in Germany and Spain, as well as developing projects through his studio in Barcelona.
(Interview published in Tijuana Metro in 2002. TIDE Story was published in Trac! Trac! Trac! In 1997)

And just chilling listening to some Hillsong Y&F (Heart Of God) before bed. I mean in the song the guitar riff at 2:14 to 2:24 is causing me to, like, sorta cry and be happy because its beautiful, but still (one of the new ones we’re playing tomorrow, I better keep it the hell together on stage). Bit of a shitpost ramble, but i’m happy, which is rare.

When we hit that intermediate stage of our learning, we’re often told that now’s the time to start switching over to native source material and to step away from resources aimed at learners.
But how do you know just what native source material to choose?
Our hopes high, we take to Google hoping to find great French books or films, but lo and behold, the majority of the suggested material is what we politely call ‘classic’. In other words, it’s old.
You wanted recommendations for films, tv shows, books or songs in French that are fresh. Those that are relevant today.
And we’re here to help.
Today, I’m excited to share a post from Emily Handley of French Affliction. She’s worked hard to curate this list of 10 French movies, 10 French songs, 10 French books and 10 French tv shows that are not only interesting and relevant, but they also contain language that are suitable for those at the beginning level all the way up to the advanced level with straightforward vocabulary.
Thanks Emily!
Let’s dive right in.
11 French Books for French Language Learners
1. Le petit prince – Antoine Saint-Exupéry
The most famous of Saint-Exupéry’s books, Le petit prince (The Little Prince) is a philosophical fable presented as a children’s book. The narrator, a pilot who’s been forced to make an emergency landing in the Sahara Desert, hears a mysterious voice asking him to draw a sheep. This turns out to be the title character, a young prince who lives on an asteroid no bigger than a house in the company of a beautiful rose that he is in love with.
2. La petite fille de Monsieur Linh – Philippe Claudel
Published in 2005, Claudel’s novel centres on the title character Monsieur Linh, who has been forced into exile from his unnamed country of origin after a war. He begins a friendship with Monsieur Bark, a war veteran, after arriving in his new country. With Monsieur Linh having lost his family in his home country and Monsieur Bark having lost his wife, the bereavement experienced by the two men draws them closer. However, as the two men do not speak the same language, they communicate instead through gestures in this friendship based on their shared grief.
3. Bel-Ami – Guy de Maupassant
Social climber Georges Duroy mounts a ruthless seduction campaign in his quest for wealth and fame in this novel by Maupassant. After finding a job as a columnist for a Parisian newspaper, he takes on several mistresses in quick succession. When he gets married for the second time in a huge society wedding, it becomes clear that his days as a seducer are far from over. As he stands with his new wife on the steps of La Madeleine church in Paris, Duroy’s thoughts turn to one of his old flames and the possibility of rekindling their relationship.
4. Le silence de la mer – Vercors
Written during the Second World War, this novel by Vercors (the pseudonym of Jean Bruller) tells the story of a German officer who lives with an elderly Frenchman and his niece following the German invasion of France. The officer, who appreciates French culture, unsuccessfully attempts to establish a bond with his hosts, who express their patriotism and loyalty to France through silence and keeping their distance from him. The novel was the first to be printed by Les Editions de Minuit, a clandestine publishing house set up by Vercors and his friend Pierre de Lescure to bypass the literary censorship put in place in Occupied France during the Second World War.
5. La première gorgée de bière et d’autres plaisirs minuscules – Philippe Delerm
Divided up into thirty-five short essays with the longest coming in at three pages, this collection of short stories offers lots of little snapshots of different aspects of French life. In one story, Delerm writes about the ritual of reading the morning newspapers on the dining table surrounded by cups of coffee and pots of jam, and in another describes the pleasure of savouring a freshly baked and still-warm croissant while walking back from the bakery in the early morning.
6. Madame Bovary – Gustave Flaubert
Flaubert’s account of an unhappy housewife who turns to adultery was considered so controversial when it was published in the 1840s that it was the subject of a trial.
Although the author’s descriptions of Emma Bovary’s extramarital affairs are no longer thought to be obscene or immoral, his insightful depiction of her dissatisfaction and boredom still resonates today.
Definitely a classic read.
7. L’Étranger – Albert Camus
L’Étranger (The Outsider) tells the story of Meursault, an emotionally detached French Algerian who is sentenced to death for shooting an Arab man. When Meusault is tried for the murder, the prosecution seize on the fact that he did not cry at his mother’s recent funeral. They claim that this lack of emotion must mean that he feels no remorse for killing the Arab man and that he therefore deserves the death penalty for his crime.
8. Thérèse Raquin – Émile Zola
Like Emma Bovary, Thérèse Raquin is trapped in a marriage to a man whom she does not love. After being raised by her aunt, she has been forced to marry her cousin, the sickly Camille. Thérèse’s life of boredom and drudgery suddenly changes when she meets one of Camille’s childhood friends, Laurent. She starts a passionate affair with him, which leads to deceit, lies and, eventually, murder when she and Laurent hatch a plan to kill Camille so they can finally marry.
9. Un sac de billes – Joseph Joffo
Known in English under the title A Bag of Marbles, this novel is about Joffo’s own experiences of growing up in a Jewish household in Paris during the Second World War. The story starts in 1941 when the author is ten years old, a year after the Germans have invaded France. He then writes about his family’s escape from Paris, as they make arrangements to cross the demarcation line into the free zone in the south of France. The novel’s been adapted into a comic strip as well as into two films, with the most recent one having been released in early 2017.
10. Les fourmis – Bernard Werber
The opening novel of a science-fiction trilogy, Bernard Werber’s Les Fourmis (The Ants) is set in the early twenty-first century, around a decade after the book was first published in 1991. Werber writes about two worlds, the world of the ants and the world of the humans, which come together during the novel. In the world of the humans, unemployed locksmith Jonathan moves with his family into a large house in Fontainebleau after inheriting it from his uncle. Shortly after settling in the house, Jonathan receives a mysterious letter from his uncle telling him never to go down into the house’s cellar, but he ignores this warning after the family dog falls into the cellar and he goes down to rescue it.
11. Dessine-moi un parisien – Olivier Magny
This book, which takes its title from one of the most famous passages in Le Petit Prince, is a witty and refreshingly unclichéd look at how Parisians see the world. Covering everything from Berthillon ice-cream and salted caramel to why wearing white socks is a cardinal sin in the City of Light, Magny’s book is a must-read for anyone in love with the French capital.
10 French Songs for French Language Learners
1. Formidable – Stromae
This became famous around the world in summer 2013 after Stromae filmed himself singing it in an apparently drunk state at a Brussels tram stop and uploaded the footage to YouTube. The clip’s now had over 160 million views.
2. Quand tu me prends la main – Joyce Jonathan
Featured on Joyce Jonathan’s second album Caractère, this song showcases her gentle vocals alongside a jaunty guitar accompaniment.
3. Paris – Camille
There’s lots of clever wordplay here, as Camille sings of falling out of love with Paris’s ‘picture-postcard stairways’ and ‘grey skies’. While she considers leaving France’s capital for Toulouse, Seville or even Rio, its charm proves in fact to be too strong to resist, and she can’t help but return to the City of Light.
4. Ma jeunesse – Carla Bruni
Before becoming Mrs Sarkozy and one half of France’s First Couple, Carla Bruni was best known for her music career. She sings here of youth and the passing of time, with a dynamic piano accompaniment contrasting with the melancholy lyrics.
5. Dernière danse – Indila
Paris-based singer Indila had a huge success with this song, which can be translated as ‘last dance’, from her debut album Mini World which came out in 2013.
6. Les Marquises – Jacques Brel
Following his decision to retire in 1966 at the height of his music career, Brel turned his hand to acting and directing before moving to the Marquesas Islands in French Polynesia. He wrote this song about his island home for his last album, released in 1977.
7. La Parisienne – Christophe Maé
This song, from Maé’s 2016 album L’Attrape-Rêves (The Dream-Catcher), is about a woman who, since moving to Paris, has abandoned her old friends for brunching, Facebooking and having apéritifs by the Seine.
8. Paris – Marc Lavoine
In this duet with Algerian singer Souad Massi, Lavoine sings of this attachment to the City of the Light, from admiring the Eiffel Tower to toasting to the health of its lovers and drifting in and out of its metros.
9. La maison où j’ai grandi – Françoise Hardy
Hardy, who is known as much for her fashion icon status as for her singing, was part of the ‘yé-yé’ movement that became popular in France during the 1960s. Here, she sings of her memories of her childhood friends and the house that she grew up in as a young girl.
10. Les gens du nord – Enrico Macias
After emigrating to France from Algeria as a teenager, Macias quickly felt welcomed by his host country. The idea for this song came to him after a particularly enthusiastic welcome from the audience at a performance he was giving in northern France. He co-wrote it with lyricist Jacques Demarny, and since its release in 1967, it’s become a popular French musical standard.
10 French TV Shows for French Language Learners
1. Braquo
Braquo, which translates into English as ‘hold-up’, follows the attempts of four Paris police officers to clear their colleague’s name following his suicide after he is suspected of seriously harming a prisoner in custody.
If you enjoy many of the crime-based television series in your native language, watching this particular series is a great way to switch over an activity you enjoy into your target language.
2. Un gars, une fille
This comedy series, which launched the career of French actor Jean Dujardin, centres on the lives of lovebirds Loulou (Dujardin) and Chouchou, played by Alexandra Lamy. Each episode starring the couple lasts around six minutes, and is made up of several sketches that can show anything from them relaxing together at home to attending a wedding, watching a show at the Moulin Rouge or even being stranded on a desert island.
3. Un village français
First shown in France in 2009, Un village français looks at the effects of the Nazi occupation of France during the Second World War. It takes place in a fictional village in the Jura mountains, not far from the demarcation line that separated Occupied France from ‘free France’. Quite a few well-known French actors appear in the series, including Audrey Fleurot and Thierry Godard, who both have major roles in Engrenages.
4. Engrenages
Engrenages, a police and legal drama set in Paris, first became known in the UK after being shown on BBC4 under the translated title of Spiral.
The show, which prides itself on its realism, gives the viewer a thrilling snapshot of the French justice system through the eyes of an idealistic defence lawyer, a police chief inspector and their colleagues.
The title, Engrenages, carries interesting connotations in the language.
5. Les revenants
Set among the dramatic landscapes of the Haute-Savoie region in eastern France, Les Revenants (The Returned) is an eerie, exciting and original take on typical zombie horror fare. The residents of a quiet town in the mountains are left in a state of shock when former residents, many of who have been dead for years, come back to life and wanting to resume their lives as normal. Their reappearances in the town coincide with other strange events, from unexplained power shortages to the water in the local reservoir suddenly lowering to a worrying level.
6. Plus belle la vie
A long-running soap opera, which is something like the French version of Eastenders or Neighbours, follows the lives of a group of families in Le Mistral, an idyllic (fictional) neighbourhood somewhere in the coastal city of Marseille.
The show broadcast its three-thousandth episode in 2016, and is so popular that tourists visit Marseille just to visit its chocolate-box filming locations.
7. Disparue
Based on a Spanish crime drama, Disparue (The Disappearance) focuses on efforts to find a teenage girl when she goes missing after going to a concert with friends.
Although this thriller mini-series is only made up of eight episodes, it manages to be fast-moving as well as sustaining a satisfyingly complex storyline.
8. Fais pas ci, fais pas ça
The rather overbearing tone of the title (Don’t do this, don’t do that) reflects the differing views and attitudes of its main characters.
On one side, the laidback Bouley family. And on the other the Lepic family, their more conservative neighbours.
9. Clem
When sixteen-year-old Clem Boissier goes to the doctor’s to find out why she’s been feeling under the weather, the last thing she expects to hear is that she’s about to become a mother.
After telling her best friend and swearing her to secrecy, she then struggles to find the right moment to tell her family. At the time of writing, this popular series has been running for seven seasons in France, and an eighth series is due to start filming.
10. Chef’s Table: France
This Netflix-produced series Chef’s Table, which has been nominated for an Emmy, visits the land of wine and cheese to find out the secrets of the most respected French chefs.
We hear from Adeline Grattard, who’s behind the bao restaurant Yam’Tcha, and Alain Passard, who took a risk that paid off when he took red meat from the menu at L’Arpège in Paris and replaced it with fresh vegetables from his biodynamic farms.
12 French Films for French Language Learners
1. Hors de prix
This comedy, which translates into English as ‘priceless’, stars Audrey Tautou as Irène, a modern-day Holly Golightly. Whilst on holiday with her current lover, she meets hotel barman Jean (Gad Elmaleh) who falls in love with her and spends all of his savings on his seduction campaign. Luckily, a wealthy widow staying at the hotel takes a shine to him and, following in Irène’s footsteps, Jean becomes Madeline’s lover. When Jean and Irène see each other again by chance, they realise that they are still in love with each other. They try to spend as much together as possible while making sure that their lovers don’t suspect anything, which doesn’t quite go to plan…
2. Intouchable
After Bienvenue chez les Ch’tis, this was the second highest grossing film ever in France. The film focuses on the bond between Philippe, a wealthy Parisian who becomes paralysed after a paragliding accident, and his live-in carer Driss.
Both Philippe and Driss are wary of each other when Driss starts to work for him, but this initial distrust leads to a close friendship between the two men.
3. Amélie
Featuring Audrey Tautou in the title role (along with Paris’s Montmartre district in a supporting role), Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s film is about a young woman who spends her free time doing good deeds for strangers.
The Café des 2 Moulins, where Amélie works as a waitress in the film, has become a popular tourist attraction since appearing in the movie.
4. Jules et Jim
Based on Henri-Pierre Roché’s novel, Truffaut’s film centres on the love triangle that develops when best friends Jules and Jim both fall for the beautiful Catherine. Even though she later goes on to marry Jules, Catherine still seems undecided about which of the men she likes, even beginning an affair with Jim while she is married. Jeanne Moreau gives a wonderful performance as the charismatic and unpredictable Catherine, and Oskar Werner and Henri Serre star as Jules and Jim respectively.
5. Potiche
Catherine Deneuve appears here as Suzanne Pujol, and the ‘potiche’ (‘trophy wife’) of the film’s title.
It’s the mid-1970s, and everyone around Suzanne sees her as a mother and a housewife, while her factory owner husband Robert brings home the bacon. But when Robert’s employees rebel against him, it’s up to Suzanne to step up to the plate and sort out the situation.
6. La Haine
Filmed in black-and-white, La Haine (‘hate’) focuses on 24 hours in the life of three teenage friends, Vinz, Hubert and Saïd.
Living on a housing estate on the outskirts of Paris, they learn at the start of the film that a friend of theirs, Abdel, is in a coma after being beaten up by police. After hearing the news, Vinz promises himself that he will kill a policeman if Abdel dies from his injuries.
7. Populaire
Insurance agent Louis Échard (Romain Duris) is a man on a mission. Having just hired Rose Pamphyle as his secretary, he’s seen how fast she can type, and has the idea of entering her into a regional speed-typing contest. Although Rose is beaten at the competition, Louis continues to believe in her, and decides to take her under his wing to train her for the world speed-typing championships. Over time, Louis and Rose’s professional relationship develops into a romantic one, in this film inspired by My Fair Lady.
8. Entre les murs
François Bégaudeau stars in this film adaptation of his novel of the same name, where he writes about his experiences of teaching in an inner-city school in Paris in the 20th arrondisement.
It’s an interesting view into the French education system as well as the struggles of teens in France.
It received the Palme d’Or at the 2008 Cannes film festival.
9. Les parapluies de Cherbourg
The rainy port city of Cherbourg is given the Technicolour treatment by director Jacques Demy, who took his inspiration for the film from Hollywood musicals. Catherine Deneuve plays teenager Geneviève Emery, who falls head over heels in love with local car mechanic Guy. The young couple’s dreams of a future together are interrupted, however, when Guy is called up to fight in the Algerian War. Geneviève inadvertently breaks her promise to wait for his return when her family’s financial difficulties force her to accept a marriage proposal from a wealthy businessman.
10. La vie en rose
Marion Cotillard won an Oscar (a first for an actress in a French language film) for her portrayal of the singer Édith Piaf in this biopic, which takes its name from one of Piaf’s most famous songs.
The film recaps the main events in Piaf’s life, from her childhood in Paris and her early success as a singer to her meeting with Marcel Cerdan, who would later become her lover all the way to the events leading up to and surrounding her death.
11. Astérix et Obélix: Mission Cléopâtre
The most successful of all of the Astérix and Obélix films to date, this story was adapted from the comic Astérix et Cléopâtre by René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo. Astérix and Obélix are transported to Ancient Egypt for this adventure. Along with their friend Panoramix, they are asked to help the architect Numérobis with the seemingly impossible task of building a huge palace in the middle of the desert in three months.
12. Bienvenue chez les Ch’tis
Directed by French actor and comedian Dany Boon, who is himself a Ch’ti (someone who lives or comes from the area around Calais), this comedy follows post office manager Philippe (Kad Merad) as he’s transferred from his job in the south of France to Bergues, in the far north. His friends and family warn him that the north is freezing and inhospitable and, when he gets there, he’s unable to make head or tail of the Ch’ti dialiect. Will he live to regret his move?

Rules: Answer 16 questions and tag 16 people you want to know better!
@spacekrakens thank you for the tag!! ♡
1. Height: 5'7"
2. Last Thing I Googled: "Jeffrey Epstein." I wish Persona 5 was legit and I could just go into this dude's heart and make him confess e v e r y t h i n g. Otherwise than this, all of my Google questions have been about Persona 5.
3. Favorite Musicians:
•Marianas Trench is top of the top, dude. They're extremely talented and my respect and admiration knows no end. I wrote an entire script for a majority of one of their albums, and that story has now become a publishing goal. Let's hope I can revise it without the music and make it its own!
•One Direction used to be my favorite. They're now an honorary mention for the nostalgia and the memories I have (like Liam looking at me and me panicking and him laughing - that was a fun one...if not awkward as frick...) (or my sister trying to theme with Niall and him just not getting it lmbo) (also my mom and I looking around Universal in the pouring rain bc we were told they'd be somewhere around the park, but actually they were hiding in one of the stores, so she and I got chicken and waffles at the Simpson's area instead) (also I got some random dude's autograph because he gave me tickets and I thought "dude, you're the best, you deserve recognition")(I still have that guy's autograph)(he was great)
•Passenger holds a place in my heart for their All the Little Lights album. That cheers me up like nothing else. It's just like, "Yeah, life sucks, but that's okay. We can still find happiness, we just gotta accept the pain as well and learn to move on from it." The most INFP artist tbh.
•Sleeping at Last because of his Enneagram songs mainly, but also because the thought he puts into his music is incredible and deserves to be noted. He's just so talented and I love supporting him.
•Lauren Aquilina because I relate on so many levels??? She just tells it like it is, but in such a poetic and beautiful way. She's an incredibly talented writer and singer. There's not one song of hers that I don't like tbh. Also, I can't listen to Tobacco in my Sheets without crying at the brother part because literally same @my bro and mom.
•Erutan!!! She plays all the instruments herself!!! And does all the singing!!! And writing!!! And her songs are so unique and beautiful!!! I feel like a little elven maiden walking through the forest gathering herbs and flowers in mid-spring every time I listen to her.
•NF. He's just so raw and real and he faces parts of human nature and christianity that we often want to pretend aren't there. He does so straightforwardly and without holding back too. It's incredible. Also, hearing his testimony pour out through his music inspires me with every song.
4. Song stuck in my head: well, after writing that, now it's Tobacco in my Sheets. But, I've been singing I'd Rather be Me from the Mean Girls Musical a lot too lately. Today it's also been Reckless Love by Cory Asbury as well. I've got like 20 different tabs in my brain and at least 3 of them are playing music a good majority of the time.
5. Followers: 36 on this account, 343 on @mymbti , and 12 on @i-am-child .
6. Following: 120
7. Do you get asks?: Occassionally, yes! I really enjoy answering them (though I go way too in depth lol, I'm sorry) and sending asks back to the person who sent them. It really makes the tumblr experience for me - getting to interact with everyone!
8. Amount of sleep?: hahahahahhahahahahahhaahhaha. I legit don't have a sleep schedule. For the past few weeks due to work, it's been about 3-6 hours though. I go to sleep anywhere between 1 and 3, then wake up sometime around 6:30-7:30, unless I'm off work, then I wake up around 9-11.
9. Lucky number?: Seven! My birthday (9/7/99), my enneagram, and my favorite number. (Lucky letter is J).
10. What are you wearing?: purple pjs that have gray French Bulldogs with little green sweaters on and a bunch of other designs. They say, "Excuse my French" too.
11. Dream job: To own a cat café!! I'm working at making that dream a reality now. Being an actress, director, or writer are also high up there. I love the entertainment industry.
12. Instruments: I don't play any, but I'd love to learn the guitar, piano, or violin tbh.
13. Languages: Learning French and ASL now.
Also, I went through duolingo the other day and did the first lesson in all of the languages I'm interested in. French (of course), Japanese, and Russian were the easiest and I actually really enjoyed studying them further afterwards.
Spanish, Korean, and German were extremely difficult and though I'd like to learn them, and really every language tbh, I think I'll put them off for now ahah.
14. Favorite Songs?: don't do thiS TO ME. Frick. Okay. Trying to narrow it down, I suppose these are my favorites, in no particular order:
•The Last Goodbye by Billy Boyd
•By Your Side by Tenth Avenue North
•El Shaddai by Dogwood and Holly
•Holes by Passenger
•Staring at the Stars (acoustic) by Passenger
•King and Lionheart by Of Monsters and Men
•Little Lion Man by Mumford and Sons
•I'll Keep you Safe by Sleeping at Last
•Amarillo Sky by Jason Aldean
•Something to be Proud Of by Montgomery Gentry
•Amarillo by Morning by George Strait
•Atlas: Eight by Sleeping at Last
15. Random Fact: I'm scared of butterflies, but I've no problem with moths!
16: People I want to know better: @heddo-pewpewpew-gudbye @masterofpretending @mikeyspsyche @dangerously-human @xubbs @magnumpicactus
I'm 100% forgetting people, so I'm sorry if you weren't tagged, but feel free to do it anyways (and please let me know so I can learn more about you too!!)
