We are about to start a brand new year! New beginnings, new projects, new resolutions! My word for starting 2023 is “Realizzarsi.” Realizzarsi is a reflexive Italian verb. It means: to come true, to succeed, to be fulfilled “Se riesci ad immaginarlo... Allora può realizzarsi.” (If you can imagine it, it can come true.) As with all reflexive verbs, they take on a new meaning from the regular infinitive form of the verb. For example: The non-reflexive verb “Realizzare” means simply to “to build, create, or make” and can be used as a synonym for “fare”, “fabbricare”, “implementare”, or “costruire” “Dobbiamo realizzare un sistema che funzioni.” (We must create a system that works.) Whereas the reflexive verb “Realizzarsi” takes on the significance of fulfilling oneself, realizing a dream or project — something that becomes real. I love the “sfumature” or the nuances of the Italian language. As you increase your Italian vocabulary you will be able to express yourself more precisely. Isn’t that great and a goal to strive for in 2023! What is the Italian word that you will pick to start out the New Year. What are your Italian language learning goals for 2023! Simbolo del periodo natalizio, l’agrifoglio viene coltivato a scopo ornamentale per la bellezza delle sue foglie e delle bacche rosse che si sviluppano dopo la fioritura.
