I miss Roma鈥檚. They were conveniently located on the corner and sold whole giant pickles for 50垄. They also made the BEST sandwiches.

Ggiata Delicatessen, 5009 Melrose Ave, Los Angeles (Hollywood/Melrose Hill), CA 90038
Tumblr media
Ggiata serves authentic East Coast style Italian sandwiches from a tiny spot in Hollywood. The owners are childhood friends who grew up in Montclair, NJ. Much of what they serve is made from scratch, either by them or by local vendors (for the bread and bagels).
The menu includes sandwiches (Italian cold cults, chicken parm, meatball parm, etc.), salads, sides, breakfast sandwiches, and baked goods (cakes, cookies, biscuits). Beverage options are limited to a few types of bottled beverages. Order at the counter and they鈥檒l call your name when your order is ready. Online ordering is also available. Many people ordered online.
I asked for the Eggplant Parm and for some reason they gave me the Spicy P. Eggplant Parm doesn鈥檛 sound anything like Spicy P, does it?
Spicy P ($16): chicken cutlet, housemade spicy vodka sauce, fresh mozzarella, fresh basil, basil pesto, grated romano on a charred seeded baguette. The sandwich looked and smelled amazing. Melted mozz topped with a chunky vodka sauce, pesto, and fresh basil. I was surprised that the eggplant was so firm, and then I realized it was a breaded chicken cutlet. The thin chicken cutlet was a little dry and the breading had no crunch. The bread didn鈥檛 seem toasted and it was a bit hard. The spicy vodka sauce was wonderful though and I loved the cheese and fresh basil. It鈥檚 a saucy sandwich, so it鈥檚 best eaten right away.
The place was crazy busy. It鈥檚 small, so there鈥檚 not much room to stand. If you want to eat there, I spied two tiny tables outside. Cash is not accepted. Parking is not easy to find in this neighborhood.

[And then this nice crunchy bread with the tomato sauce that you make yourself and firmo curo ut firmitatem recipiat. That's a real sausage and pepper sandwich. This is what an Italian deli's all about.]

The curse of being goth and smelling like a sweaty Italian man.
Just spent the last hour scrubbing the smell of onion out of my trenchcoat's armpits. Why god?

Why is it SO goddamn hard to get a goddamn plain focaccia in the Seattle metropolitan area. The thing that drives me back to the east coast is going to be the absolute lack of Italians in this city. I am trying to make a CAPRESE SANDWICH.
