My assumption about you is that you’re not very minimalistic? And that you might be even like to collect little knickknacks, trinkets, or shinies?

Haha that's spot on, anon.

I think part of it is just naturally that I worked as a traditional artist for a decade, and so my house is filled with art, art supplies, sketches, sketchbooks, and thousands of coloured pencils and other mediums etc.

But yeah my hobbies are definitely around - whether it's stationery or Paperblanks journals, Lego or tarot decks or blind box / collector's toys or crystals.

I can be quite mercenary something, once I'm no longer enjoying something I often give it away to someone who will enjoy it.

I'd say I don't actually really like collecting knickknacks/trinkets specifically, there's very specific hobbies all my stuff is connected to. Even the blind box toys serve as artistic inspiration. I like functional pretty things. As soon as it loses its purpose, it goes to someone else.

But I am a big fan of living a healthier childhood as an adult so there are just playful things around :D

So, If you’re into stationery and journaling I’m sure you’ve seen journal spreads such as these from shops

Beautiful journal spreads/collages filled with various colorful and eye catching washi tape designs, stickers, sticky notes, memo paper, etc.

Here are some other examples from talented content creators: (1),(2)

While visually pleasing, they require high consumption of materials that weigh heavily on your wallet, contributes to carbon emissions from shipping, and can reduce the personal gratification of the hobby by relying on excess of materials.

The thing is, these types of journal spreads are mostly created by:

Companies and small businesses to showcase their products, marketing as much of their products in one space while being visually eye catching to potential consumers.

Content creators who profit from sharing their journal spreads and supplies to their followers. Many of them also being artists the make for stationery supplies to sell. Many content creators also receive free gifts to market products to their followers. As such, they have a lot of material to work with without digging through their wallet.

How about for the casual hobbyist?

We can create spreads like these on occasion (personally I like to go all out on my birthday journal spread), but our journals won’t be filled back to back with these elaborate spreads, and that’s okay!

It’s okay because We. Dont. Profit. From. Our. Hobby. We don’t rely on it as a form of income!

There is no need to invest so much time and money because our personal gratification comes from expressing ourselves in the ways we can on the pages, being creative, and exercising that creativity in a way that Does. Not. Have. To. Be. Aesthetically. Pleasing.

So please don’t feel the need to buy, buy, buy.

Don’t feel the need to compare your journal to others online. It’s personal. It’s you. Even without all the fancy embellishments and pens and glitter,

It is still you.

I have a new washi tape from The Washi Station (@thewashistation) for their World Ghost Stories collection! Based on stories my grandma told me growing up, this haunted paper-cut village contains the ghouls and ghosts of childhood.

Bonus fact: The colors I used are the 4-colors of the base Gameboy palette. The tape looks gorgeous on paper.
