I don't know how strictly accurate this is, but one of the things I find shocking about watching historical dramas is how many people there are around all the time---according to Madame de... (1953) a well-off French household in the Belle Epoque maintains a workforce of at least 3, and the glittering opera has staff just to open doors. According to Shogun (2024) you can expect a deep bench just to mind your household, and again, people who exist to open doors.

Could people....not open doors in the past? Were doors tricky, before the standardization of hinges? Because otherwise, the wealthy used to pay a whole bunch of people to do it for them in multiple contexts, and I find myself baffled.

We understand system stuff is weird. We understand fictive stuff is especially weird. But we're just people trying to live our lives, and make it through, same as y'all. We just want to be treated like people, and not like roleplayers, or chatGPT bots, or sad sick crazy people to be pitied and "played along" with.

Not all systems will have the same opinions about fictives and how they work, sometimes there's even differing opinions within one system. Sometimes it does work one way for one fictive, and a different way for another. But at the end of the day, you're still dealing with a person who's appearance + personality is at least loosely "based" on a fictional character.

Someone being a "kinnie" or not doesn't matter. Some fictives don't see themselves as "exactly that person", and just see themselves as an "absorbed concept". Some fictives very much see themselves as that person and NOT just an "absorbed concept", and are going to be upset if you treat them like a "concept".

So... ask. Talk to them about it. Try to understand. Realize that their experience and feelings might not be 100% the same with other systems. And go from there. It's okay to not understand, it's okay to be confused, it's okay to think it's a bit weird.

What isn't okay is expecting a fictive to act 100% like their source, and being irritated because "oh they wouldn't say that", "oh they wouldn't do that". It's very well known in the plural community that, regardless of how a fictive sees their existence, it's common to divert from one's source. And it's a HUGE insecurity for a lot of fictives to not be "real enough", or not be seen as "actually them" because people don't think they "act the part" well enough.

Just... don't do that to someone. Accept them as who they are, and if you must see it this way, think of it as interacting with an "AU" version. They're them, but they're never going to be 100% the same as the version you're familiar with. Please stop expecting them to be the same.

AITA for not wanting to be friends with aziraphale?

One of my server friends recently came out as having DID with an aziraphale fictive. I don't know all the terms but I'm generally supportive of systems and sincerely do just take people's word for it. However since I've met aziraphale they've pissed me off.

Plainly speaking. He would not fucking say that. I know it's like not aziraphale in the real but everytime he doesn't seem entirely in character I get irritated. To be clear- he's not a kinnie, he's a fictive insert, so I know this is just the system absorbing a concept. But whenever I see aziraphale is out I want to avoid him and not talk at Best. We don't mesh. But I feel bad because I am friends with like the rest of the system, and it seems fucked to be like 'i like all of you except the part'.. Now aziraphale keeps getting passive aggressive about my avoidance, and a few other friends have noticed too and asked me what's up. I've dodged the question. I have no clue if the rest of the system is aware, but it seems aziraphale is, and one other friend is calling me ableist. AITA?

Personally, I love this full saying because curiosity is part of all of us. Humans love to learn by nature. How does that work? What is that? How do I make it?

i got (and still do get,) a lot of shit for asking "why?" "How?" And countless other questions, but I refuse to live blindly. I want to know why I have to follow people's commands, and I want to know things in general. Don't let others deter you wonderful curiosity and keep asking questions about absolutely everything!

Kabru is always my favorite tho bc I fucking love characters who are both ruthless and genuinely kind. Who have noble goals and strong ideals and will make compromises in order to reach them, especially when they aren't punished for it by the narrative. Kabru will straight up commit vigilante murder because he's done the math and judged it to be the action with the most harm reduction, and he's good at math.

Kabru is the only person in the series both on-scene and thinking about the larger implications of the actions being taken, and I love him for it.

sorry but would you be willing to elaborate on Kabru being a trans allegory? I'm trans myself + a Kabru fan but this never really occurred to me (just thought people made him trans since it's cool)

the whole thing with milsiril and all the doll imagery associated with her as symbolism of how she sees him as a doll she wants to keep and take care of is something a lot of transmascs can relate to. even though he loves her, he does NOT want to go back home to live with her again.

also him needing to mask and adapt his personality to certain people can mean a LOT of things, but you can visualize that a stealth trans guy would want to do this sort of thing for safety reasons

and to the shallower, surface level visual stuff:

he looked very feminine as a child and wore a dress. elf males can wear skirts/dresses, but you can infer that he didn’t like wearing one as you see him wearing shorts as an older child

he’s 170cm(average tallman female height) of course you can say “that doesn’t mean anything” but it’s a funny coincidence, don’t think too much about it.

okay this is just me hypothesizing through the existing text:

you can assume that elves view tallmen as inherently masculine the way dwarves see them as inherently feminine as marcille feels like the actors for the tallman adaptation of the daltian clan don’t fit elf beauty standards, so he didn’t have trouble being seen as a boy while living with milsiril

he spent four years living independently before the story starts. i’m sure he’d have access to masculinizing medicine during that time

of course, this all can be applied to other parts of his character, but there’s nothing that contradicts this headcanon. an allegory doesn’t always have to be intentional after all, but seeing how ryoko kui has made one-shot manga about unambiguously transgender/genderqueer characters, it’s really not impossible to have this reading of him.

obviously, you can still headcanon a character as trans without any “evidence” or even if it’s contradictory with their backstory, but it’s neat how all the puzzle pieces fall into place

Kai except he adores annoying everyone.

He might not be the oldest, but he is the only one who is an older brother (Zane’s possible family not included)

He adores walking into Nya’s room and not leaving even when she starts getting angry. He’ll be standing there, poking her, laying across her knowing damn well he’s heavy, snatching stuff out of her hands, using that voice people use when talking to babies, all because he got bored and loves seeing her get annoyed.

He play fights with Lloyd all the time and always is the one who initiates it. Suddenly Lloyd is in a headlock, is getting thrown onto the ground and now he has Kai sitting on his back pretending he’s sitting on a sofa. “Man, why is the sofa talking??”

He loves to go into Zane’s room and act like it’s his own when Zane isn’t there. Full on laying across the previously pristinely made bed with his stinky socks on the bed and Zane walks in and promptly has a heart attack. He then grabs Kai’s ankles and does his absolute best to drag him out. Then because Dr Julien thought it would be funny and because Kai loves using it to his advantage, he starts poking in specific areas he knows will send what Zane says is small electrical pulses to random areas that makes Zane start giggling on the ground. So, tickle wars. Zane never wins.

Kai loves to take horrible photos of Cole and then show them to the other years later. In a meet up with Vania he shows her a photo of Cole standing waist deep in a puddle of mud, his face covered in mud, staring at a now ruined cake staring up at the camera with the most heartbroken expression ever. Cole promptly began chasing Kai around the room demanding he deletes it. Kai retaliates by playing a video with Cole sobbing over a romance movie about horses.

Jay has gotten sick of telling Kai no, you can’t touch it. Kai adores annoying Jay by asking if he can have something of Jay’s, taking it even when he says no, changing things when Jay didn’t want him too, etcetera. Now Jay sees his calendar say August 5th when it’s December 26th, wondering where half his hoodies went, questioning why his pants are where is socks are supposed to be and why his socks are now covered in motor oil. Kai also enjoys asking the well known and very annoying “why?” Question continuously when Jay is working.
