This fanfiction is yandere, if you don't like the genre, don't read and if you are not of age, don't read.
I don't want to hear any complaints in the comments, thank you.
This does not reflect my way of thinking or living at all, it is just a work of fiction, it is like watching a horror movie, many of us love horror movies, but we would never dream of what we see in those movies happening in reality as well.
Simply put, this story was written for entertainment purposes, it should not be seen as a reflection of my values, opinions or morals. I absolutely do not condone such acts.

She really didn't want to ignore what Jungkook told her.
But she was alone in that new house, it was so dark, and the storm outside was terrifying her as it had not in a long time.
Something strange vibrated in the air that evening, something that moved under her skin like a snake and caused long chills of frost.
She clutched tightly with her other hand the gold ring that proved their marriage had taken place, it had been strange to see all those unfamiliar faces taking part in the ceremony, it had seemed to her more like a business meeting than actual nuptials, but the most important thing was being together, Jungkook had clutched at her all the time to make her understand.
Now she needed him, who was in the basement working on something, he had not told her exactly what he was working on, he had simply made her promise that she would not go down there for any reason in the world, with or without him.
Deglutinating slightly in front of the door in question, it was tall and dark, imposing and terribly menacing, she was about to turn back to their bedroom when a thunderclap far louder than the previous ones made her jump on the spot with a squeak, she grabbed the handle pulling it toward her and cast a glance at the dimly lit stairs that were supposed to lead downward.
With a sigh she took her first steps, barefoot and with only a thin nightgown to protect her from the drafts of that place, the further she went the more she could hear strange noises expanding throughout the flight of stairs, she squinted wondering what the hell her husband was up to.
"Jungkook?" she whispered with her arms wrapped around her own body in a vain attempt to protect herself from anything that might harm her.
Another painful noise to her strained ears left her speechless, maybe... maybe Jungkook had hurt himself?
She hastened her steps with anxiety painfully gripping her chest, flung open the small door that separated her from the smaller room, and what she saw left her breathless.
There was blood, so much blood, everywhere.
On the work table were scattered numerous weapons, all of them ominous-looking, but even more grotesque was the lifeless form of a man slumped badly in a chair, his feet were bound by a chain and his arms behind his back had received the same treatment, his dark hair and skin were premeared with red, viscous liquid, his swollen, ashen face confirmed what the girl was thinking. He was dead.
A high-pitched, shrill scream left her throat, she brought her trailing hands to her pale lips and began to take small steps backward, her breath coming less and less.
Who was he? No. Why was he there? What the hell had happened in there?!
She turned like lightning to run away from that horrific sight, but blocking her escape she found her husband himself, staring at her with a stern, icy, frightening expression. His imposing shoulders covered the door, preventing her from running away like a terrified mouse.
Y/N sobbed harshly at the sight of his bloodstained clothes; she could not believe it, he... he...
"You promised you'd never come down here," he said reproachfully, furrowing his brow and wondering why she had preferred to leave the warmth of their bed to go down into that hellhole.
Y/N shook her head, "N-No... I-I just wanted to... Please, let me out" she cried with less and less breath, trying to get as far away from him as possible, but in doing so she collided with the table. She was stuck.
Jungkook approached her slowly, holding a threadbare dishcloth in his hands, "Aish...look at your lovely little feet," he huffed, Y/N cast a glance at her bare feet, they were completely soiled, "You shouldn't have seen any of this," he continued with a twinge of displeasure in his gaze.
When he reached her Y/N found herself stiffening, afraid of a possible violent reaction, but nothing of what she feared happened.
Jungkook hugged her to himself, cradling her against his strong chest as if before his eyes he did not have a girl in the throes of a nervous cry, but only a puppy to comfort.
"You didn't have to find out like this, although I'm actually relieved...it's a part of me that I couldn't keep secret forever, I was tired of lying to you in fact," he murmured into her hair, leaving a tender kiss that didn't match the surroundings and situation.
"What does it all mean, Jungkook? What is going on? What are you doing?" she sobbed shakily, terribly shattered by the aberrant sight of the man behind her lifeless.
Jungkook tenderly caressed her cheeks, his expression softened by a note of adoration. Y/N was beautiful even with fear written all over her face.
"That's what I am, my love," he admitted, "I didn't want to scare you, so I never told you anything, I knew it would be hard for you to understand."
A light bulb went off in the young woman's brain, Seokjin and the evenings he made Jungkook spend away from home.
"You kill people," she huffed, lacking strength.
"I don't kill people, I deal with those who deserve punishment," he emphasized harshly, "They are bad men, Y/N...I just clean up."
Y/N cast another glance at the body, but had to look away immediately to prevent herself from vomiting her dinner, she staggered into her husband's arms, close to fainting.
The nauseating smell in the tiny room was making her feel sick.
"Was he a bad person, too?" she whimpered, praying for an affirmative answer, something to help her accept such a truth.
Her heart was torn.
Her husband was a murderer, but the love she felt for him was so strong and suffocating that, even with such knowledge weighing on her small shoulders, she was unable to turn away from him.
Jungkook's dark irises sparkled brightly, understanding the meaning behind his wife's words.
"He was, he hurt a lot of girls before I managed to catch him, I'm sorry I brought him here," he said truly regretful, "Our house should not be infected by certain beings, but tonight I had to make a break from the rule of not bringing work home."
He spoke of killing as to a job, Y/N did not know how long it had been going on or who he was working with, she just wanted to go back and forget whatever she had seen or heard that night.
"I...I don't know who you are," she murmured with tears in her eyes, "I don't know who you are and I'm afraid," she cried harder hitting him in the chest, she didn't even know what she was saying.
She felt split in two, she was scared but also very, very angry.
Why had he not told her such a thing earlier? Why had he forced her to discover his secret in such a revolting way?!
Jungkook let her do it without moving a single muscle; he knew too that it was difficult for her to accept it, but he was also sure that she would.
She was his woman, she would never let him down.
"I'm still the same, Y/N," he whispered in her ear, leaving a small kiss on her temple.
"Jungkook, I have to-" I have to get out of here.
"I'll clean up everything of course! Honey, I'm sorry...I know you hate to see dirt everywhere," he made crucified and sorry, Y/N could not believe her ears, according to him that was what was making her sick to her stomach?, "Come here," he hummed as he brought his face closer to the girl's face, took her gently by the cheeks and pressed his lips to the girl's, heedless of the blood on his fingers that soiled the soft skin, Y/N groaned in disgust.
"Jungkook, what the hell!"
"Y/N" the boy's dark, predatory eyes caged her, his lost expression troubled her, "I need you now," he begged grabbing her by the hips, pushing her against the table he badly scanned away the objects and made her lie down on that hard surface, not giving her a chance to disentangle herself from his grip, so strong was he.
Y/N screamed breathlessly, frightened and confused.
The boy towered over her with his entire size, adoring the sight of his wife now sharing the same secret with him.
"What do you want to do here?!" she shrieked in a high-pitched voice, looking around as if mad.
Her legs were unceremoniously spread wide, she peered breathlessly at her husband's lost face.
There was something they both loved to do sometimes, sex without foreplay.
There was something arousing about entering her still tight and rigid because they were too aroused to give themselves time, it was exciting the way she got wet quickly after the first thrusts, and Y/N loved feeling him hard and mighty in her.
Reduced as he was like that, he could not venture to touch her too much; therefore, he found it was the right time to take advantage of that wild way of joining.
"You like raw sex, don't you, love?" he asked without really expecting an answer, Y/N squeaked looking at him like he was crazy, "Take my cock," he growled leaving her speechless.
He forcefully pushed his taut erection against her covered core and Y/N shuddered breathlessly, her brain shut down at her husband's subtle growl.
"Don't make me repeat myself, sweetheart," he licked his wife's lips, cupping her face in his bloody hands, ignoring how the viscous liquid uncomfortably smeared the woman's soft skin.
She moved like a robot, unzipping his pants and pulling out Jungkook's heavy cock, he practically purred against her mouth, kissing her again, "Look at me, my love, just me" he murmured to her teary eyes, moved his hips against her hand, his cock already stiff and throbbing, spurring her on.
"Jungkook..." she pulled up with her nose, tightening her lips indecisively on what to do, watching the door behind her husband, "Please don't make me do it here," she pleaded, causing him to freeze.
He frowned, he had never forced her to take him and she had never refused sexual intercourse with him, finally fully understanding her discomfort.
He kissed her forehead, sighing against her warm skin, before pulling away disgruntled.
If Y/N thought she was finally free, she had to think again, in front of her Jungkook began to strip off his soiled clothes, throwing them to the ground with a resounding slap! Soon his perfect, blood-stained body was completely naked, heedless of the confusion printed on his young wife's face.
He unceremoniously took her in his arms, Y/N dared not move to refuse the contact, aware that Jungkook could keep calm up to a certain point and then... there was that dark curiosity that made her wonder what he would do next.
They walked back up the stairs to the basement, Y/N took one last look at the lifeless body in the room and shuddered, that would be an image she would never forget, she let her forehead fall back on the boy's smoothly sculpted chest wearily, casting a glance at the hallway they were walking down she noticed that the boy's goal was to get to the shower room they had recently had installed in the new house.
They had moved into a new house after the wedding, she was so happy, she would be able to leave behind those first terrible memories she had of the four walls, too bad that now even those were filthy with a new and terrible event. She swallowed the nonexistent saliva, trying to chase away the stench of death that accompanied them both.
"Y/N," Jungkook began, holding her tenderly in his strong arms, he entered the shower with her before beginning to undress her, the woman shivered from the cold, she had almost forgotten about the storm howling outside, "I would never hurt you, you know that, yes?"
He bent down slightly so he could look into her eyes, but Y/N escaped his scrutinizing gaze.
"Look at me." he intimated firmly, he took her chin between two fingers, forcing her again to point her irises into his dark ones, when they bonded once more Jungkook threw himself on her lips, claiming them with possession and desire, the grip he maintained on her face was soft, however, as if he wanted her to know that she was safe with him and she had to give in to that passion, she returned that contact with desperation, trying to bury in the meanders in her mind what she had discovered that night.
Jungkook groaned smugly, grasping her thighs securely to allow her to bind her legs to his hips, her back stuck to the glass of the cabin, soon after she felt the jet of water hit them and she screamed in surprise, widening her eyes.
At their feet the water began to run crimson, as bewitched she ran her hands over her husband's chest, rubbing away those terrible stains, the signature of the sin committed by the man a few meters away. She did not want to look him in the eye, not at that moment as she passed to clean the arms that held her.
"Y/N-."
"Shut up!" she exclaimed in a broken voice, shedding more tears that mingled with the still flowing water.
Jungkook's wet hair stuck to his forehead and the tips touched his wide-open eyes. He looked like a little fawn caught by surprise.
He should not have had such an innocent look, even his red lips should not have been so sweet and tantalizing.
"You've been lying to me all this time, and just like that you bring a dead body into my house," she hissed, driving her nails into the boy's forearms, "You're a fucking crazy bastard," she continued snarling, exploding for the first time that way.
The boy watched her for a few moments without saying a word, before a grin spread across his otherwise angelic face.
"You may well be right, my sweetest wife," he laughed softly, "But to take you away with me and save you from that miserable life of yours I certainly could not be normal, those who love cannot afford to be normal," the tips of their noses touched as he blew those words at her and entered her with a slow thrust, Y/N squeezed her eyes shut as her unready pussy recognized the cock of the man she loves, Jungkook sadistically pushed deeper, enjoying the relaxed progress, he knew that she was experiencing a burning sensation that she secretly adored.
"Those who love cannot be normal," she repeated as she clutched at his chest, that phrase continued countless times in her mind as Jungkook underscored that thought by shaking her body repeatedly with direct and precise strokes, feverishly kissing her lost face.
She rested her head against the glass of the shower, letting the jet of water cloud her vision as her walls moistened around the man's increasingly tense cock, beginning to flicker more and more intoxicated by that forbidden pleasure, accompanying Jungkook's gradually more frequent and devouring moans.
"I fucking love you! You're perfect," he said through clenched teeth in her ear, growling at yet another squeeze of her abused and needy core, "Y/N, without you everything I do would be meaningless," he confessed, kissing her full cheek before brushing her face with his forehead, hiding his expression from her.
But his tears Y/N felt anyway, and it was the first time she could feel him so vulnerable.
Perhaps that night had not been upsetting only for her.
"J-Jungkook," she stammered, stopping short when the thick tip of his cock hit a particularly sensitive spot, her thighs glistening with water trembled as she increased her grip on his sculpted body, "I believe you, but no more secrets or-... work at home," she begged him with a knot in her throat, accepting without more strength what he was.
Those who love cannot be normal.
The boy nodded instantly, leaving small kisses on her chest, taking a sensitive nipple in his mouth, then going up her tender throat to her lips.
"Do you love me?" he rotated his hips expertly, making light contact with the young woman's swollen, tense clitoris, which at that point trembled uncontrollably.
"Mpf! -Kook!"
"Tell me, fuck! Tell me again, like you always do every day and every night; when I hold you, when I look at you, when I fuck you so good you lose your mind," he ordered in a raw voice, ready to make his cock explode inside her womb, wanting to offer her a little life that was already ready to grow with her.
He slammed into her several times violently, the glass shuddered furiously, and Y/N's eyes automatically closed at the powerful orgasm that shook her to her bowels, followed by the boy's copious jets of cum that filled her completely.
"I love you," she whimpered against his neck, trying to block her husband's last thrusts by clutching her walls, making them both gasp, "It's impossible for me to imagine a life without you, I could never leave you," she sobbed, completely exhausted and overcome by that all-consuming awareness.
"That is exactly the effect you have on me, my love... see? Together we are our everything, we don't need anything else."
The water was now flowing clear and clear, every trace of what had taken place in the basement had been buried.
Jungkook shut off the shower spray, got the girl down from his arms and immediately covered her with a large clean towel, helped her gently, kissing every visible patch of skin from time to time as he finished drying it thoroughly, it was a ritual now and there was no trace in him of the crazy man he had been almost an hour before.
In the bedroom he helped her brush out her damp hair, the next day it would be an unwatchable tangle of strands, but she really didn't have the strength or patience to even think of drying it with a hair dryer, she just wanted to sleep for hours on end. Jungkook on the other hand brushed the damp locks with joy, he loved their softness and shine, his little woman was gorgeous in every way.
"Let's go to bed, honey," he crooned, "You're about to collapse," he chuckled, snapping a noisy kiss on her forehead, missing the effect it had on the girl, who watched him with a lighter heart and a blank mind.
She fell asleep wrapped in her husband's arms, her head buried in the hollow between his neck and shoulder, lost in that sweet and inviting body heat, inhaling Jungkook's delicious scent.
He waited patiently for her to fall into Morpheus's arms before moving slowly, untangling their bodies from the firm grip that Y/N unconsciously tried to maintain, he sighed discontentedly.
He did not like the idea of parting with his beloved, but there was a filthy worm that had to be disposed of as soon as possible before it plagued their beautiful home with its stench.
The next day Y/N lazily opened her eyes, the sun's rays had long since penetrated the room, and stretched herself thoroughly before getting up and putting her feet on the floor.
She looked around for her husband, but he was not there.
In return she sensed voices whispering in the living room, frowned remembering that they were expecting no one that day, put on her Stitch slippers, a gift from Jungkook to tease her because of her endless love for the little being, and clasping her arms to her chest went to "investigate" the mysterious guest.
A dark-haired head and a blond-haired head turned in her direction when she gave evidence of her presence, her eyes widened.
Jungkook and Kim Seokjin both looked at her with a smile.
Suddenly memories of the night before flooded her mercilessly, causing her to gasp for breath.
She had accepted that she had to share Jungkook with that life, but the images of what she had seen still remained horrifying, and the smile they were both giving her sent shivers down her spine.
"You're awake!" exclaimed Jungkook cheerfully, leaving her interjected.
He was bursting with happiness for a reason still unknown to her.
"Jungkook, what..."
"Y/N."
Seokjin's quiet voice stopped her, she shifted her gaze to the man in silence, he had always given her the impression that he knew more than he wanted to reveal, her ex-principal had always been a mystery to her and now she had concrete certainty.
"Welcome officially to the family, Mrs. Jeon."
Jungkook's eyes shone euphorically, thus expressing his pride, Y/N instead observing Seokjin's angelic features understood that the devil had a face and a name.

I haven’t had a “music library” since like 2011 so I had to make due with shuffling my Spotify, this means we don’t get to make fun of shameful songs from middle school I still know all the words to, it’s gonna be like 99% sad white boys with beards and acoustic guitars
1. Landfill, Daughter
'Cause this is torturous electricity Between both of us and this is Dangerous 'cause I want you so much But I hate your guts
2. If I Were You, Whiskey Farm
If I were you I'd head for the mountains Far away from the city lights Find a spot where your heart can't hear nothin' And let it fly into the night
3. Romeo and Juliet, Dire Straits
I can't do the talk like they talk on the TV And I can't do a love song like the way it's meant to be I can't do everything but I'd do anything for you I can't do anything except be in love with you
4. The Weekender, The Hold Steady
There were a couple pretty crass propositions There were some bugs in the bars There was a kid camped out by the coat check She said the theme of this party is the industrial age You came in dressed like a train wreck
5. Devil Knows You’re Dead, Delta Spirit
May good luck find you at your worst And bad love lose you at your best May your days be rich and full of wealth And your nights be long when you need rest
6. Are You Sitting Comfortably, Megson
And the days and the weeks may pass us by As we fill up every moment till we die But even when we know we've finished all the jobs we've got There will always be something we’ve forgot
7. Marigold, Mother Falcon
Is this love? I don't know but tonight I'm gonna find out Is this love? I don't know but tonight I'm gonna find out
8. Absentee, Jack Campbell

The Bachelorette: Episode 12 - The First Goodbyes
After all the solo dates, it’s time for our first rose ceremony. After tonight, two of Aja’s bachelors will be going home. Let’s see who goes, and who takes a step closer to Aja’s heart.
Tumblr media
“Wow, boys, I gotta say you all clean up VERY well. While there’s been a lot of ups and downs, I’ve loved getting to know you all over the last week and each of you have qualities I value in a potential partner.”
Tumblr media
“One value I hope to hold true during this competition is a full dedication to being yourself. One of you really stood out showing me your full self and while it was VERY extra and corny, it showed me that you are not afraid to go all out and show me how much I mean to you. So, that’s why I’d like to present the first rose to…”
Tumblr media
“Bastien!”
Tumblr media
“Merci, Aja. I hope to keep surprising you.” “Just take your flower and go sit down, dork.”
Tumblr media
The next bachelors to receive roses are Ryan, Atticus, and Zeke, leaving Cooper, Alanzo, and Darion as the bottom three. Who will be the one that stays? “While for the most part I loved spending time with each of you, the reason you are in the bottom three is for violating my trust, something that I don’t tolerate. Darion, not only did you disrespect me by entertaining flirting from another woman on our date, but after you apologized to me continued to accept contact from yet another woman. And I don’t play that. Cooper, the first dates are about introducing yourself so that I can start to get an idea of you as a person. But instead of doing that, you chose to make up a fake persona that put both me and yourself in harms way. Alanzo, your untrustworthiness was a little more complicated. While you didn’t directly lie to me, you omitted things about yourself that could ultimately put me in a LOT of danger."
Tumblr media
“However, one of you chose honesty over alliances and chose to come to me with a warning that will save me and the other members of this house from trouble. It was a brave thing to do, and it showed me that your intentions are good, and your heart is in the right place. So, I would like to offer today’s last rose to…
Tumblr media
“Cooper!”
Tumblr media
“If you ever do some dumb shit like that again, I will send you packing on the spot. Got it?” “Understood.” “I really like the Cooper I talked to on my porch. I wanna get to know him.”
Tumblr media
But as Cooper goes to take his rose, Alanzo steps in to confront him! “You little narc! You ratted me out, didn’t you?!” “I- I don’t know what you’re talking about, I swear!”
Tumblr media
“Bullshit! You’re a fucking snake!”
Tumblr media
Before the fight can get too out of hand, Darion steps in to defend his friend. “Lay the fuck off, man. Cooper deserves to be here a thousand times more than either of us, and I’ll lay your greasy ass flat if you step to him.”
Tumblr media
“You’re gonna have to learn how to fight your own battles. And watch your back. I got friends that’ll make you wish you were never born.” “Bro, give it a rest.”
Tumblr media
After Alanzo’s escorted out by security, Darion and Cooper step out for a final goodbye. “Thanks for having my back, bud. Alanzo scares the crap outta me.” “I got you. But he’s right - you need to fight your own battles if you want people to respect you. Let’s link up after the show.”
Tumblr media
“I’m gonna miss you! Breakfast Club’s not gonna be the same.”
Tumblr media
“Alright alright, take it down a notch. I’ll see you soon, man.”
Tumblr media
“I’m really taking what Aja said to heart. From now on it’s 100% Cooper Tremblay. And with Darion gone, I need to figure out who I can trust and who’s really got my back.”
Tumblr media
“I am not surprised I was picked first! Are you?”
Tumblr media
“I’m happy with my choices today. I know that Darion will do some growing on his own and I wish him the best. Alanzo…I did NOT know he had a temper like that. Really goes to show that you can’t always see people’s true colors until it’s too late.”
Tumblr media
Next week the top 5 will do a group competition to see who goes on to the final four. Will underdog Cooper be able to rise to the occasion? Find out next time on The Bachelorette!

Part 16 - 30th June 1945
The N.E.W.T.s had gone by so quickly, it felt like all the preparations, all those years in Hogwarts and all the worries they had brought you, had been of utmost exaggeration. Of course, they had been challenging, but what the Professors had said about them in advance, how hard and draining they would be, how nervous every student had been, made it even more curious afterwards. It had only taken a few days after all. Some days of your life, which would most likely be forgotten in a few years. Just like any other week. And all that fuss for that? Well, at least they were over.
Tom, Camille and you had passed most classes with the highest grades. Freda had gotten some outstanding grades as well and even Avery and Lestrange had qualified, if only barely. The final evening in the Great Hall was filled with a strange kind of melancholy for the students of year seven. You had done it, all of you. Seven years in Hogwarts, school of witchcraft and wizardry. It was like your first year had only gone by moments ago, you could practically still feel the sorting hat sitting on top of your head. But alas, all good things come to an end.
Final points were given to all of the houses and, to most people’s surprise, Hufflepuff won the cup. Everyone knew headmaster Dippet favoured Slytherin and Tom and Freda had surely given their own house a few extra points here and there, but Avery and Lestrange’s robbery from Slughorn had cost Slytherin too many points to recover from. All Hufflepuffs were overwhelmed with joy and Ben even ran over from the Gryffindor table to kiss Camille on the cheek while she celebrated.
Walking through the halls one last time was strange, you couldn’t fathom that you would leave the castle ultimately. It really had grown to be everyone’s second home and it would always remain so in your heart. Sadly, there wasn’t a lot of time for grief, as the antidote for Mors Grano was finally ready and waited to be filled into a flask to be used the following day. Tomorrow, June 30th would be your wedding day. A day you had dreaded but still couldn’t wait for. A day that was about to change everything.
Tumblr media
And there you were. In an old chapel north of Ramsbury, a small muggle town, where no one knew who you were. The Gaunts had chosen the place themselves and had only told your family where to go the day of, most likely to make sure you couldn’t plan to mess with them.
The chapel was dull, as was everything else there. No guests, not even a priest or a registrar to wed the two of you. Marvolo had told you that he was to do it himself. The place was so small, it wouldn’t have even fit a lot of guests, but you still wished that at least Camille could have been there to witness. And so, with a heavy heart, you stood in the tiny side room, where Mother’s wedding dress waited to be put on, while Elsie, your parents and the Gaunts waited in the chapel.
“Alright?” Tom asked as he fixed his tie in front of the mirror.
You watched him as you went over towards the dress, your fingers brushing over the silk skirt. He looked great in his tailored black suit, white shirt and dark green tie, there was no way of denying it. Freda Morris would have been just as green with envy if she had seen him, but yet, not everything was about looks.
“I’m alright,” you said and took another look at the dress. “I have to change now. Put this thing on.”
“I’ll give you some privacy in a minute,” he mentioned as he walked over to the desk where some things were gathered. He had put a large box there when you had arrived. “I brought someone with me.”
He pulled the top off from the box and you peaked in. “Nagini! Marvolo allowed for you to take her here?”
“He doesn’t know,” Tom shrugged. “And it would be better if it stayed that way.”
“I see,” you said as you held your hand inside the box for the snake to smell you. “Well at least I know one of my friends is here.”
Tom wore an unreadable expression when he closed the box again, his lips thin as he nodded slightly. “Do you have the antidote with you?”
“Yes,” you answered and pulled it out from your pocket. The flask was the size of your palm, small and translucent. The potion inside shone through the glass like a silver and lilac gloss. “It’s right here.”
“Alright then,” he said. “Give it to your sister as soon as you can. I’ll wait outside with the others.”
When he closed the door behind himself you heard Marvolo nagging about what was taking so long, urging for you to hurry. The bastard made everything about himself again, even on your wedding day, which should have been the happiest day of your life. You pulled the dress off the hook vigorously, put it on and changed it here and there with your wand to make it fit better. When you went over to the mirror to look at yourself, it felt like staring at a stranger’s reflection. The dress was beautiful, but you didn’t look even close to what a happy bride should look like. Your hair and makeup had been done in a hurry, nothing was as perfect as it could have been. No traditions, no extended family or friends, not even a banquet. You didn’t know what you had expected - it was clear from the beginning that the wedding wouldn’t be anything like you had dreamed of since you were little - but it was certainly not this. Not as marginal, not as a means to an end.
Three hard knocks on the door pulled you out of your thoughts. “Are you done yet?” Marvolo’s muffled voice called. “Hurry up!”
Desperation turned into annoyance and your eyebrows furrowed even deeper. What did he want now? “I need a minute,” you answered as you opened the door only an inch. “Elsie, Mum, can you help me with my dress?”
Marvolo mumbled a few incomprehensible words while the two walked in. To hell with him, he could wait for five more minutes before he would get what he wanted. And you should get what you wanted too. Right now.
Mother looked you up and down with a smile. “You look beautiful, darling. What do you need help with?”
“Come,” you told them quietly and took Elsie by the hand, leading her to the other end of the tiny room, so that the Gaunts wouldn’t hear you. “I have to tell you something.”
The two looked at each other and then back at you, waiting for you to explain.
“I found something out a while back. Tom told me, he showed me. The curse that hit you, Elsie, it wasn’t sent by someone who wanted to attack Father. It wasn’t meant for Father at all.”
Elsie’s eyes grew wide and Mother laid her hand on your sister‘s shoulder. “What do you mean? Why would you tell us that minutes before your wedding?” Mother asked.
“Let me explain,” you went on. “Tom showed me that it was the Gaunts who sent the curse. That’s why they found a cure so quickly. And why they didn’t heal her completely.”
Mother gasped faintly, her hand wandered up to her own chest. “You mean…”
“Yes. They chose Elsie specifically so that you and Father would agree to their pact.”
“I… I can’t believe it,” Mother mumbled.
“They made me sick?” Elsie asked, her eyes as big and round as marbles. “On purpose?”
You nodded.
“But why haven’t you told us sooner?” Mother asked. “We could have-”
“I did as much as I could without attracting too much attention. Tom and I, we both assumed that the Gaunts wouldn’t even lift Elsie’s curse after the wedding. And even if they did, I wouldn’t trust them enough to let you drink anything that they would give to her again. So we brewed the antidote ourselves.”
You pulled out the flask and held it up in the air. Mother took it and inspected it for a moment. “You brewed that?”
“Yes. Elsie, take it right now. You will be healed completely then and the Gaunts won’t notice anything.”
“Are you sure it’s safe?” Mother asked. “And what then? What are you going to do?”
“Yes, I’m sure it’s safe. And then,” you looked at the door to the chapel and heaved a sigh. “Then I’ll get married. Stick to the plan.”
“I hope you know what you’re doing,” Mother said as she handed Elsie the flask.
“Would you rather have her drink something that Morfin brewed up? If he would give her anything at all.”
“You’re right,” she said and shook her head.
“Quick Elsie,” you urged her. “Drink up and we’ll be ready to go.”
Elsie nodded as she pulled the cork off the flask, then put her lips around the opening and took a small gulp. She scrunched up her face into a grimace. “Tastes gross.”
“Sorry, princess. They don’t make recipes for strawberry flavoured antidotes yet. Now drink it.”
Elsie exhaled sharply, then threw her head back and let the liquid pour into her mouth. One swig, two. She had it down almost completely when suddenly the door flew open.
“Excuse me ladies, what is taking you so long?” Marvolo asked, standing in the door frame, with Morfin, Father and Tom behind him. Marvolo stared at Elsie, who was just gulping down the last drops from the flask. “What is that? What did you give her?”
The three of you froze, staring back at Marvolo and the other men. Shit.
“Just her vitamins,” you lied. “To make sure she’s well for the ceremony.”
“No, no,” Marvolo huffed as he walked in. “Give me that.” He took the flask from Elsie’s hand and brought it up to his nose. “Morfin, come here.”
Morfin entered the room as well, took a look at the empty flask and smelled it. Father and Tom took several steps in too, filling up the room almost completely.
“Stop,” Marvolo ordered and held his hand up to Father and Tom. “I didn’t tell you to come in.” The two halted and remained standing by the door. “Now, son. What is it?”
Morfin inspected the remaining liquid inside the flask, shaking it to see the single droplets hanging inside the vial. One side of his mouth pulled up into a ghastly smirk before he spoke through gritted teeth: “Mors Grano antidote.”
Marvolo brought his hand up to his neck, fumbling on the chain that hung there. That must have been where he carried their own flask with the unfinished antidote. It was still there, which visibly confused him. He remained calm, wouldn’t dare to show that he didn’t know how you had done it, his eyes dark and full of anger.
“You little bitch,” he spat. “Morfin, take the child.”
Morfin did as he was told, quicker than any of you could have reacted and pulled Elsie to the middle of the room by the hand, then stepped behind her, one hand around her neck, his wand in his other one, pointed right at Elsie’s head.
Mother cried out when she saw what had happened to her daughter and turned to walk over to her, while Father ran towards Morfin and Elsie as well.
“Stupefy!” Marvolo called, his wand directed at Father, who fell to the ground immediately. “I told you not to step in. No one’s making a move now unless I tell them to.”
Mother fell to her knees, looking at Father unconscious on the ground and Marvolo gaped at her in disgust. “Take your husband. And shut your mouth, or you’ll be lying there with him.”
She pressed her lips shut and crawled over to Father, slowly dragged him to the corner of the room behind you, where she held his head between her hands. Silent tears ran down Elsie’s cheeks, who was still captured between Morfin’s hand and his wand. You had managed to pull out your own wand during the turmoil and looked over at Tom in the doorframe, who had done the same.
Marvolo had noticed the looks you had exchanged and heaved a bitter laugh. “You two, eh? Partners in crime. And what do you think you’re doing there, girl? With your wand out. Do you really think you can defeat me with your schoolbook magic?”
You gripped your wand tighter to prevent your hand from shaking, swallowed down thickly and frowned. There were a million things you wanted to say, thousands of curse words you could have called him, but Morfin still had Elsie between his fingers. “Don’t you underestimate me, Marvolo.”
He clicked his tongue, let his head fall back and laughed wholeheartedly. “Oh, juveniles. Graduated a day ago and think they’ll conquer the world. Well, I got some bad news for you then. But first, you’re going to tell me how you’ve found out about Mors Grano. And how you got a hold of an antidote that isn’t ours.”
You didn’t answer and only looked at Elsie, who breathed rapidly, her hands holding on to Morfin’s grip around her neck.
“I see,” Marvolo sighed and turned his head towards the door. “Tom, would you give us the honour then? Come, stand next to your fiancée.”
Tom walked over silently and placed himself next to you, his hand gripping yours.
“Oh look at that,” Marvolo feigned. “Tragically in love. Now, Tom, explain.”
Tom didn’t answer, only held your hand a bit tighter and you could feel something cold inside of it, something metallic, perhaps.
“No?” Marvolo asked. “You don’t want to tell us? Well, then we’ll have to motivate you. Morfin, go ahead.”
Morfin grinned but didn’t point his wand at Elsie anymore. Instead, he pointed it right at you. “Crucio!”
The pain that rushed through you was unbearable from the moment it had started. You fell to your knees and opened your mouth to scream, but couldn’t even hear yourself or anyone else anymore. A million knives must have pierced your body at once, and they scraped off your skin with rusty blades inch by inch, while your head hammered and stung as if a lightning bolt had struck right into it. Your vision had left you from the pain, everything around you had gone white and you only heard scraps of conversation between the all-consuming buzz that rumbled between your ears. Tom was begging them to stop, you assumed, but couldn’t concentrate on his words anymore, as the pain threatened to crack your skull.
Then, as quickly as it had started, it ended. You opened your eyes slowly, blinked a couple of times when your perception came back and felt a small hand on your cheek. Elsie kneeled above you, next to Tom.
“What happened?” you asked, your voice hoarse, while you sat up groggily.
Marvolo was still standing in his spot, looking down at Morfin, who lay on the ground, holding his leg with both hands. And attached to his thigh, was Nagini, pressing her fangs into him through his trousers.
“Nagini,” you whispered and as soon as you had said her name, the snake let go of Morfin and retracted.
“She crawled out of her box when he hit you with the curse,” Tom said quietly. “And bit him before they could have noticed.”
Tom helped to get you on your feet again and even though your knees were still weak from the Cruciatus Curse, you stood in front of Elsie, to shield her from the Gaunts.
Morfin winced in pain and still held his leg. Nagini’s venom spread quickly, Morfin’s thigh was twitching on its own.
“Father,” Morfin whined. “I need treatment. Help me get home.”
Marvolo looked down at his son, lips parted with an expression of sheer revulsion on his face. “Do you think I have time to take care of your little injuries right now? Suck it up.”
“But… But Father, I can’t feel my leg anymore,” Morfin panted. “I might die when the venom reaches my heart.”
Marvolo sighed and bumped his foot against Morfin’s hurt leg, to which his son screamed. “Then leave.”
Morfin nodded, it must have taken all of his remaining strength not to pass out, and closed his eyes before he apparated, leaving only a few drops of blood on the floor behind.
“Now back to you,” Marvolo said and looked at Tom as if nothing more than a minor inconvenience had just occurred. “Don’t you dare lie to me. You know I can kill everyone in this room within a second.”
Tom still didn’t answer and placed himself in front of Elsie and you, which made Marvolo laugh again.
“Oh, boy. You’d sacrifice yourself? For this family and not your own? I know I’ve raised you differently. You’re a disgrace.”
“You want me to tell you everything?” Tom asked. “Then let me come closer, so I can share all of my secrets.”
Marvolo remained unimpressed at the thought, there was no spell he couldn’t counter. So he rolled his eyes and shrugged. “Come as close as you want, son. But keep your wand up, where I can see it.”
And so Tom went. One step, two, three, four, until he was face to face with his grandfather. Marvolo still eyed Tom’s wand, gripping his own tightly. And then, Tom moved his other hand abruptly, jerking it toward Marvolo’s abdomen once. You couldn’t see from where you stood and only noticed when Marvolo looked down himself and opened his mouth.
“Imperio,” Tom said quietly while Marvolo fell to his knees.
Now that you could see what he had done, you put your hands in front of Elsie’s eyes, holding them closed. Marvolo was bleeding from his stomach and Tom held a bloody knife in his wandless hand.
“I’m just making sure you can’t apparate,” Tom said coldly. “Like uncle did. The coward. I want to see how you die.”
Marvolo looked up at Tom, opened his mouth but didn’t say anything, tears edging on the corners of his eyes.
“No. You don’t get to talk now,” Tom went on. “Never again. You’re going to listen. And I’m even going to tell you what you wanted to hear. I found a way to tell her what you have done to Elsie. I stole Morfin’s book, and we brewed the antidote ourselves. Oh yes, before I forget, we also stole some Banshee tears from Morfin, while you were out. Scrook and Hokey were very helpful. I even learned some new things this year. Some of them from a muggle-born, can you believe? It got me thinking, you purebloods are so concentrated on magic, you wouldn’t even realise when I’d come up to you with a knife in my hand. And I was right. You didn’t. You see, you called me a bastard so often and reminded me that my father was a muggle. So I thought I’d remind you myself how much of a half-blood I am. Isn’t it awful dying the muggle way? So slowly, so weak.”
Marvolo laid to the side, impacted by the Imperius Curse and opened his mouth, coughing up blood, his eyes half-closed.
“And now, here we are,” Tom whispered. “You did this all to yourself. Good night, Grandfather.”
Tumblr media
It took a while until you all had calmed yourselves. Father had woken up some minutes after Marvolo had closed his eyes completely and you had brought Elsie into the chapel, so she wouldn’t have to see the body. Tom, your parents and you hadn’t decided yet what to do with Marvolo. You had thought about leaving him there, or to apparate him to Gaunt manor, where the elves or Morfin could take care of it. If Morfin himself was still alive.
Mother joined you in the chapel and you took the chance to get some fresh air outside. Only out in the open you noticed that you were still wearing the white dress. What scorn of fate it was to watch someone die on your wedding day. The door opened again behind you and Tom walked out. He had managed to remain composed better than anyone else there, even though he was the one who had killed somebody.
He walked up to you, looking at the ground and only lifted his head when he stood right in front of you. A warm breeze brushed over your skin as the sun was setting. “Are you okay?” he asked.
You nodded. Physically you were. Your mental state was debatable. “I think I am.”
Tom dipped his head once too and loosened his tie. “Are you scared of me after what you’ve seen?”
You looked him in the eyes, tilting your head slightly. His pupils were extended, brows sitting calmly above. “No,” you answered. “I would have done the same if I had to.”
He bit his lip and nodded, hands inside his pockets before he took them out, held you by your waist and kissed you. All the tension and stress seemed to leave your body for a moment, your shoulders finally relaxing and you wished you could hold on to him like this for an hour. Tom stayed close for a moment, pressed his forehead against yours and sighed. “So,” he said as he took a step back. “The pact is done with. Elsie is cured. You don’t have to marry me anymore.”
A surprised gasp fell from your lips. You hadn’t even thought about that yet. He was right. “I guess I don’t.”
Tom pushed the tip of his shoe through the gravel on the ground, drawing patterns. “But I wanted to know,” he said. “Would you have gone through with it if this had turned out differently? Would you have married me and stayed?”
There was a moment of silence when you thought about it. What answer could anyone give to such a question? You liked him, yes, you would even dare to say you were in love with him. But would you have really married him this quickly if you could have decided yourself?
“Would you?” you asked, to which he smirked. The wind tousled his hair, just like when you had sat with him at the bench back in the Hogwarts’ courtyard. “Why don’t you ask me? Properly I mean.”
Tom’s smirk vanished and he looked at you seriously. He took both of your hands in his, inspecting you closely. He opened his mouth but shut it again to clear his throat. Then he asked: “Do you want to marry me?”
A smile formed on your face, one that he didn’t mirror, as long as you wouldn’t answer him. “No,” you said.
Tom’s expression didn’t change, but when you looked closely, you noticed that the size of his pupils had decreased, his brows now hanging in confusion. He still held your hands but you could feel him trembling.
“Not yet,” you added, your smile still in place. “Not like this and certainly not today. Not on Marvolo’s terms. Not without my friends and not before we really get to know each other and both decide, on our own, that we want to do it.”
You leaned forward, kissed him once and said: “So, ask me again in a year or two?”
And then, the rarest sight of them all, Tom Riddle smiling genuinely, was given to you. He looked so handsome wearing it and with the orange light from the setting sun on his face when he let your hands go and pulled you in.
“I promise I will.”

That was it, the grande finale :3 I truly hope you liked it! There’s still one more part to come, the epilogue, which will hopefully please the majority of you. I see it as a little cherry on top. Please consider leaving a comment and tell me what you think so far :) They motivate me so much to keep writing! Thank you for reading!

Obsessive Ledger!joker x reader
I’ve been spoiling you all recently with all this Ledger!Joker, so you’re welcome 😎 (but also so sorry because I did go on a hiatus without saying anything for half a year 😬). Let me know in the asks if you want something in particular, I love writing for J so much! I have a few already that I am working on as we speak, so stay tuned for those 💜
Below are headcannons for a more yandere and darker joker than I usually write 👻 nothing abusive here because J is still very much my comfort character, but it definitely includes over-possessive, protective and stalker themes, as well as encouraging reader to join in on his murderous chaos
Warnings: morally ambiguous reader, joining joker on his “fun” i.e. mentions of torturing others, blood, weapons, severed body parts as gifts, implied seggsy time
Tumblr media
· Before adoration, fondness or love, the first feelings Joker had for you was pure obsession. Obsession with what you thought and felt, what you liked to do and why you liked to do them. Obsession with your safety and the need to protect you, which led to jealousy and possessiveness very often. It was primal, and longing, and left him thirsting after your presence like a greedy, hungry wolf. He wanted you- needed you- and he was going to get you
·In spite of a period of flirting, suggestive jokes and hinting touches, Joker made it clear pretty quickly what his feelings were for you. Because of his lifestyle death is like a waiting shadow, and wasting time on what he wants is just not his style
· Quite soon into the beginning of your more romantic relationship, you move into his hideout for the sake of your safety, which calmed J down with some of his possessiveness and paranoid thoughts. He knew his home was the safest place in Gotham, excluding Bruce Wayne’s cave, and with you in it that meant you were safe too.
·When he’s gone, he’ll leave a huge shotgun behind for you to use in case of emergency, as well as Chechen’s Rottweilers. You’ll find some stray knives and pointy objects hidden in your coats too, “just in case”, but its more heartwarming to you than annoying
· He loves to lay on you at night, whether it be right on your chest to hear your heartbeat, or on your belly where he can feel your soft skin pressed against his scared cheeks. Not only is it pleasant and lets his touched-starved soul get some attention, but it also makes him hyper aware of every shift or move your body does while asleep. It also prevents you from sneaking out of the bed to run away, which is one of his more paranoid thoughts. Don’t try to move away or push him off, he will smack your hand back and snuggle in deeper, wrapping his arms around you like a snake
· He doesn’t care what insecurities you have regarding your appearance; he admires every single piece of you and will cuddle with whatever he wants, so push your anxieties aside because Joker hungers for all of you
· His gifts can sometimes be very macabre. Generally, he loves to spoil you with an array of things, such as new clothes or lingerie, plush toys of your favorite animals, snacks you said you’ve wanted to try, or even just random knick-knacks he stole from his victim’s homes. However, if he’s feeling adventurous or extra flirty that day, he will bring you certain body parts to symbolize his feelings for you.
· You’ve definitely found your fair share of human hearts in your fridge, because he adores how your heart races when your scared. You’ve found a pair of lungs stuffed in there too, because the little gasps you make when frightened or anticipating his touch are delicious to him. You went to get milk once and right behind the carton was a tongue, symbolizing how much he relishes your little talks and midnight conversations
· Once, he brought over a whole corpse, the body decomposing and gnarled, skin ripped to shreds and a face pummeled so brutally it had concaved. “Don’t need to worry about them any more doll,” he giggled, spitting on the body with a fervor that thrilled you. It took a few minutes of intense staring- why did they look familiar?-  but then it clicked in your mind; it was the very person you had fumed and vented to Joker about last night, right before he had spontaneously left
· “J,” you began, eyes nearly popping out of your head. “Did you kill him... for me?”
· “ ‘Course I did, sweetheart.” He rolled his eyes like it was the most obvious thing in the world. “You know I’d, uh, kill anyone for you. Nasty fucks like them especially-ah.”
· If you have to leave for longer periods of time, whether that be for school or work, Joker will always have a few of his men stalking you from a distance, making sure you’re safe and that no one dangerous is within a 1 mile radius of you. They also have explicit instructions to take photos and send them to J, because he likes looking at your oblivious little face.
· He’d do it himself if he has the time, which he sometimes does, but he too is quite busy with his own things (when anarchy calls, as they say), so hiring lookouts is the next best thing. If he could, he’d have you right by his side at all times… how pretty you’d look in a soft purple leash... but that’s just daydream fuel for now
· Speaking of photos, Joker knows his ways around a camera. He makes... lovely home videos that he sends to news channels in his free time (rip fake batman) and he continues to practice at his craft from time to time. He even won a deepweb award for best snuff film of the year, which boosted his ego to ungodly heights. He’s absolutely delighted about it and hints that you should watch it on one of your movie nights, but he does warn it’s not for the faint of heart
· Taking videos and photos are one of his favorite hobbies, and if you’re down to clown… he’d certainly bring it in the bedroom
· Speaking of his more thrilling hobbies, Joker will constantly suggest you join him on his escapades or help out behind the scenes, especially if he picks up on any sort of interest from you concerning his ‘job’. Joker is an observant man, and he reads you like a book. He knows you likely have some dark, sinister thoughts running around in your head - you must, if you’re with him- so he does everything he can to encourage you to let them out. Joker will never judge this side of you, no matter how grim. He’ll try and harness it, bring it to light. He hates the thought of you shying away from your true self, embarrassed of your darker nature, but what he hates even more is you thinking he’ll be disgusted with you or disappointed. How can you think that?
· “No no no, bunny, not me. You’re my muse, so give me some inspiration hmm? Tell daddy exactly what’s going on in that mind of yours...”
·  If you do show interest in the darker side of his job, he’d smile so big that his scars take up his whole face. He’d teach you everything; how to fire a gun, how to stab someone, how to hide a body and how to torture one. He’ll spread out all his weapons on the floor and let you choose which one calls to you, like a deranged ceremony, informing you on the pros and cons of each one. He’ll even invite you into the warehouses he designated just for torture, which are just as gruesome and sinful and they sound
· J let’s you watch as he hurts his victims, whom are purposefully rapists and killers to make you feel less guilty, and let’s you join in on the fun whenever you gain the courage. He even went as far as to buy a whole torture set off the black market, from scalpel to needles, just to give you options. Joker loves to see how creative you can get, and it’s one of the few times he lets you take complete control
· “The floor is yours, bunny. Impress me.”
· He is down for pretty much anything, and that mindset is not exclusive just to the bedroom
·Any couple activity you fear might be too far or creepy for other people… is right around J’s alley. Weird kinks or foreplay games you want to try? No problem. Making love in abandoned houses or cemeteries? Now that’s his type of romance. You want to carry a small vial of his blood around your neck? He is all game, but only if he gets one of you as well. Matching knives? He’s blushing. Satanic blood ritual from a sketchy website that’s supposed to bond your souls for eternity? Perfect, his weekend plans were centered around you anyways
· Now…If he feels that you’re not giving him enough attention or start to push him away, he will resort to crazier means to obtain your love back. He’ll set off random bugs, rats or even henchmen into your home to scare you, gleefully waiting to hear you cry out his name in fear. Like a small, dependent little kitten, mewling for their protector. He’d come in, guns ablaze, looking for whatever scared his darling angel, killing them on sight. You’d run into his arms, tears streaming down your face as you cling to Joker like your life depended on it- just how he liked it. He’d coo mockingly and pull you closer, rubbing your back as he unashamedly basked in your physical touch.
· In general however, your soft caresses, kisses and reassuring words are enough to keep him very pleased. He knows you adore him and are head over heels obsessed just like he is, and that truly does put a smile on his face.

Dimension Jump XXI Report
I suppose I’m a DJ veteran now as this was my fifth consecutive one and the fourth at the Nottingham Crowne Plaza which is an expensive four-star hotel.  Sharing with a friend helps keep the cost reasonable and honestly, it’s worth it for the sheer convenience of being right there in the hotel and being able to nip back to your room as required.  (To be clear, you don’t have to stay in the hotel to attend the con.  There are plenty of other hotels nearby.)
Plus there is always the chance that you’ll see a guest at breakfast as I did Danny once.  He picked out a few pieces of fruit and nibbled at them before wandering over late to his photoshoot.  What else would you expect from a cat though?
Friday
Myself and @downonthepharm-red-dwarf (Amy) had arrived the previous day so had plenty of time to be near the front of the queue for registration.  Which meant we saw Hattie Hayridge arrive in a stunning designer coat and with smart luggage.  She really brought her outfit A-game and looked great the whole weekend.
Once we’d presented our respective proofs of full Covid vaccination or a recent negative test, we were given our DJ passes and booklets.  The latter has spaces for signatures from guests, an Order Of Events and various handy tips for the weekend.
The con kicks off at 5pm with an hour of gradual build-up in the Main Hall - they show videos from previous events, specially made titbits with various guests past and present such as Mark Dexter doing a mock guide to DJ and Rebecca Blackstone voicing Pree.  It all helps with the atmosphere, as do the numerous RD posters dotted around the hotel.
Then it was time for the Opening Ceremony featuring various Fan Club team members and an overcrowded stage full of cardboard boxes - the joke was that they’d had too much time on their hands during lockdowns and bought loads of stuff online.  It was obviously also a nod to Lister’s hoarding in “The Promised Land”.
The sketch featured a specially made shot of the AA adverts’ Starbug model landing outside the Crowne Plaza and an 80s computerised version of the lovely convention logo.  You could tell a lot of loving effort had gone into the whole thing.
Once the guest line-up had been announced (I’ll get to that not-really-a-surprise-guest shortly), we went straight into the RD Pub Quiz, hosted by Hattie.  DOTP and I had been joined at our table by Lapsang and Barbs from our Discord (No Kind Of Atmosphere) plus various other attendees we’d befriended.
Someone in the crowd yelled “I love you, Hattie!” to which she quipped “I’ve pulled already!”  Another bloke shouted “Fuck off, she’s mine!” which led to a few shouts of “Fight!”  When neither seemed keen to do so, Hattie joked: “Only two?  That’s a bit pathetic!” and then we got started.
The quiz is hard, by design, but I’m good at quizzes and my team - No Kind Of Atmosphere after our Discord - came joint third which was gratifying.  (I was on the winning team a few DJs ago, to blow my own trumpet for a moment.  This is my report, after all.)
And then it was time for the first guest Q&A with - surprise, surprise - Johnny Vegas aka the Crit Cop in “Timewave”.  Not a great episode but he more than made up for that with an appearance I can only describe as chaotic.  Warning - DO NOT attempt to heckle him unless you want to be singled out and humiliated in front of the entire audience in a “Can’t look away” fashion which was nonetheless entertaining.  The man in question tweeted about it afterwards and seems to have taken it in good spirit.
Once we’d moved on from encouraging people to leave unpleasant things in room 429, it turned out Johnny’s a big fan of the show and owned it on VHS (so did I).  He thinks of the main characters, Holly would win at “Taskmaster” and had good reasons for that conclusion.
He was dubious about the pink costume he wore in “Timewave” as he thought it might take away from the character but said he eventually decided he needed to get over what he was wearing and just go for it.  He also said one of his worst working moments was on “Benidorm” when he had to hold his breath underwater in a freezing swimming pool and his co-star kept forgetting her two lines so they had over 30 takes.  Ouch.
Johnny left commenting that he got less love at his 50th birthday party.  But we hadn’t seen the last of him by any means as people kept buying him drinks during the Auction, leading to him successfully bidding for one of the items on offer.
And then he was back for the Karaoke.  Now if you - as he informed us - had to undergo emergency dental surgery in the morning and had practically lost your voice, would you sing karaoke?  And not only that, would you sing a version of “Love On The Rocks” which lasted 11 minutes according to someone on Twitter (I wasn’t timing it, but I can believe it), followed by the full-length version of “American Pie”?
If you answered no, you’re clearly not Johnny Vegas.  He went to bed so late that the unfortunate Fan Club team member assigned to look after him got a grand total of 90 minutes’ sleep.
Saturday
DOTP and I had paid for the Photoshoot with Mr Vegas, Danny John-Jules and Ray Fearon.  We got in the queue at 9am which was when it was supposed to start.  An hour later we were still waiting.  Yep, Danny was late.
Once he made it to the hotel, I got my photo in front of a Science Room backdrop.  You might think Mr Vegas would be hungover and rushing through it, but on the contrary, he was still enjoying the hell out of proceedings which was refreshing to see.  Since he’d been added to the line-up too late to be in the souvenir booklet, he signed extra inserts for the Fan Club which they handed out to everyone at the later Autograph sessions so attendees got his autograph after all even though he’d finally left.  That’s what I call throwing yourself into an event.
Next up was a combined Q&A with Danny and Ray (originally separate but Danny’s lateness meant they were teamed up).  This wasn’t a problem at all though - on the contrary, it worked really well as the chumminess between them added to the vibe.  Also it was Ray’s first convention so he probably preferred to have Danny backing him up, especially since the poor man tripped on his way to the stage and almost fell.  I don’t think he was hurt but I cringed with secondhand embarrassment and empathy.  He wasn’t the only one to fall foul of the edge of the stage that weekend; I think it was the slightly raised dancefloor in front of it.
As is usual for Danny, we were treated to over half an hour of what you can only really describe as a stream of consciousness as he pontificated about various things.  He and Ray did also talk about working together on “Death In Paradise” and Ray described his worst working experience there - he had to play a scene in a club in 45 degree heat with a live snake wrapped around his neck!
Ray is attractive in a “Hollywood hunk” way and Danny was clearly conscious of this, joking that he’d “brought his own security with him” and muttering “I’m better-looking anyway!”  But all in a jokey way as they’re clearly friends.
Danny had come from filming and dropped a heavy hint that he’s appearing in a Dickens adaptation which I imagine will be shown at Christmas as they generally are.  He also complained that Craig Charles never answers his phone: “You send him a message and he answers it on Twitter a month later!”  (Interestingly, Chris Barrie later mentioned a recent phone conversation with Craig so make of that what you will.)
Ray was quieter but happy to talk about the vagaries of showbiz and typecasting - he said that due to his Shakespearean background he gets a lot of serious roles so people were genuinely surprised that he could also do comedy but “I was always funny!”  He also gently teased Danny about the age of some of his references before admitting he still finds Tommy Cooper funny.
Danny usually performs “Tongue-tied” with a good grace when inevitably asked to by an audience member but perhaps it’s finally starting to pall as this time he did it in the style of Oliver Reed’s Bill Sykes and included a lot of X-rated references to cunnilingus etc.  It was entertaining though.
Next up was a live Q&A (over Zoom) with Chris Barrie.  Danny decided to stick around as he wanted to show Chris something he’d ordered online.  It took a while to get the cameras in the right position for Chris to be able to see it and Danny needed a knife to open the parcel, leading Chris to quip “Is this a good time for me to step out for some lunch?”
However, it turned out to be worth it as it was a custom-made Ace Rimmer doll which impressed Chris with its quality and he complimented the maker.
Danny and Ray then departed for their lunch and to take part in the Coffee Lounge which this year had reduced its numbers for Covid-related reasons and held a ballot for entry in the interests of fairness.  Amy and I didn’t get in but happily stayed for the rest of Chris’s Q&A.
In the “working from home” spirit, Chris was in a hoodie in his living room as opposed to his more usual smart suit.  He was suitably relaxed and revealed he got through lockdown by concentrating on the things which make him happy, such as his hobbies, his garden and his family.  His favourite episodes are “Marooned”, “Dimension Jump” and - less predictably - “Twentica”.  He also referred to a recent “mannerly, as he would call it” phone conversation with Craig.  No details but it had clearly been a positive experience.
Amy decided to liven up the ending of his Q&A by asking a vitally important, “TPL”-related question.  Whom would Rimmer find more attractive, a female version of Lister or a female version of Cat?
Once the laughter had died down and Chris had bought some time by pointing out that “neither of them are women”, he gave the question appropriate consideration.  He pondered whether Rimmer would be more taken by the “simple charms” of Lister or the “feline grace” of Cat.  This next bit is courtesy of Amy as my memory isn’t infallible: He said it’d be a choice between a feline form or a rounder, a bit more slovenly woman - he wouldn’t want the perfectly feline woman because she might not like his imperfections, but he also wouldn’t want someone who ate curry three times a day.  “Basically, a balance would be ideal.”
That was the last question but Chris provided a little more entertainment as he had a “How do you turn this off then?” moment a la Gordon the computer in “Better Than Life” and made amusing faces as he figured it out.  If it was anyone but Chris I’d think it was a deliberate reference to that but I think he was genuinely befuddled.
We then broke for lunch, followed by Autographs with Hattie, Danny, Ray and Norman Lovett.  I got the latter three to sign the “TPL” poster I’d brought with me but gave Hattie the booklet instead as it seemed more tactful.  She complimented the dress I was wearing and I returned the compliment, telling her how much the fans appreciate the effort she makes with her DJ outfits.
Norman commented how there’s a version of the “TPL” poster he isn’t on, bemusedly.  Fortunately mine was the version including him.
I spent the rest of the afternoon chilling in the bar with Amy, Lapsang and Barbs, chatting to other attendees.  Graphic Designer Matthew Clark was now in the Merchandise Room with various props from Series XII and “TPL” including the Starbug manual used onscreen.  I got his autograph on my poster but it’s an incomprehensible squiggle.  Oh well.  He was very friendly and easy to talk to.
After a break for dinner, the Main Hall reopened for the Costume Competition.  This seems to get better every DJ, with an amazing “Greyscale Rimmer” who was discomfiting to be around due to the corpse-like makeup, a Natalina Pushkin, a Nirvanah Crane who could almost have been Jane Horrocks herself and a Diving Suit Cat from “BTE”.  Other entries included Rimmer’s Mum, “Giraffes who were armed and dangerous” and a Confidence And Paranoia who were later pictured at the bar chatting to Paranoia himself, Lee Cornes.
We then had a special video message from Doug Naylor which I won’t go into as I’m sure everyone’s already heard the details.  Suffice to say, his tone was positive.
The second Auction was hosted by Ian Boldsworth who made it more entertaining by adding his own commentary to each item.  This was followed by a stand-up set from Norman.  It was amusing but he misjudged the mood a bit, I feel.  When you’re waiting for a disco to start and it’s already hours late due to Danny’s tardiness, you don’t particularly want to contemplate your own mortality.  We were here to get away from all that, as much as possible.
Anyway, the Disco was a lot of fun even if Dave Benson Phillips’ presence as host was sorely missed.  Hattie danced for the best part of an hour alongside everyone else.  The stand-in DJs did their job and I stayed until the end.  The final two songs were “Bohemian Rhapsody” and … “Tongue-tied”.
Sunday
Not being in the Sunday Photoshoot, Amy and I had a nice leisurely breakfast and got over last night’s festivities before the first Q&A, live over Zoom with Robert Llewellyn.
This was hosted by Ian Boldsworth who in his capacity as Dave era audience warm-up knows Robert well.  Clearly well enough to get away with teasing him relentlessly about not being at the con in person until poor Robert was a mess of Krytenesque guilt.
His protestations that he’d been scheduled to be in Munich this weekend but no longer was (he was at home) only made things worse.  Ian: “Oh, so that’s two sets of people you’ve disappointed now!  Stop saying yes to things!”  It was hilarious and Robert took it in its intended spirit.  Also Ian was getting a measure of revenge for Robert - in character as Kryten - dry humping him at recordings.  One attendee asked “With the groinal attachment?!”
Robert admitted that he finds Kryten’s various groinal attachments hilarious and if he was writing the show they’d be in every episode.  He praised Doug’s restraint.
He also admitted that in “TPL” he had an earpiece to have his lines fed to him.  Since it’s controlled by an iPad, certain unscrupulous cast members took great delight in feeding him rude ones.
He still intends to update “The Man In The Rubber Mask” but atm “Fully Charged” is consuming a lot of his time as it’s become much more successful than he anticipated and he’s in charge of several people.
Surprisingly, he would hate appearing in RD without the Kryten makeup, both because it’s become much quicker to apply and because it provides him with a shield and he becomes Kryten and forgets stagefright.  He still can’t watch “DNA” for that reason.
Lapsang, who played Kryten in “Into The Gloop”, asked Robert if he’d seen it.  He hadn’t but said he was now very curious and would find a way to.
Next up was Lee Cornes aka Paranoia who said he originally auditioned for the lead roles and like the other unsuccessful actors got the consolation prize of a guest appearance.  Upon being asked if he’d gone out for a drink with Craig Ferguson’s Confidence, he said no because at the time they had a frosty relationship due to rumours that Craig was plagiarising other comics’ jokes.  Lee said it was all very silly and he’s since apologised.
Interestingly, Lee is a qualified science teacher and carried on with that career alongside his media one, leading to surreal situations where his pupils would ask: “Sir?  Were you on the telly last night?”  “Yes.”  “Are we on the telly now, sir?”
Someone asked a good question - what would Lister’s Paranoia be like now 33 years later?  Lee would be willing to reprise the role but isn’t sure it would work as the original had a childish quality whereas he feels now the character would be a lot darker and less funny.  Lee was both thoughtful and entertaining in his responses.
He was followed onstage by Hattie and Norman, who resolutely refused to rise to the bait of an audience member attempting to stir up a rivalry between them.  That only works when one isn’t the nicest person you could meet.
A tactless audience member asked both if they’d watched “TPL” instead of directing the question at Norman.  Luckily Hattie had seen it and particularly enjoyed the cat flap joke although she felt there was a little too much focus on the guest cast.
Norman didn’t really watch RD after he left but Hattie has seen Norman’s early episodes as he lent them to her back when she was originally cast as Hilly for research purposes.  Bear in mind this was 1988 when they weren’t even available on VHS so presumably he recorded them off the TV.
Hattie confirmed with a sigh that she’s simply never been asked to return in any capacity: “That’s the short answer.”  What the hell, I’ll say it one more time - Bring Back Hattie!  One episode, that’s all I ask.  As it stands, it’s starting to look like a pointed and deliberate snub which mystifies me.
We then broke for lunch, followed by Rob Grant and Paul Jackson.  For obvious reasons they didn’t go into the current legal mess, opting instead to entertain the fans with the story of how they met and their early pre-RD work (Rob and Doug as freelance writers for Paul’s producer).
We saw some clips from their early shows including “Three Of A Kind” with Lenny Henry, Tracy Ullman and … later magician David Copperfield; apparently they all had the same agent and Paul took on David as a favour.  For a 40 year old show it held up pretty well and was in much better sound and picture quality than older shows often are. “Carrott’s Lib” was just as funny.
It’s a bit hard to summarise but this session was entertaining and gripping.  Rob still wants to write another RD novel and I believe there’s nothing actually stopping him as both he and Doug had an option to write a second solo novel.  So we’ll see.
The final Q&A was Matthew Clark who was very informative and interesting, showing us numerous production stills from Series XII and “TPL” and talking us through them.  There was a groan when time was called before he was finished.
By now time was running short and Amy and I went back to the room to pack and leave our luggage with reception before watching the start of “Dibbley Family Fortunes”. Since I knew I wouldn’t have time to watch it all, I instead nipped upstairs to Autographs with Lee and Ian, timing it perfectly as the queue had almost vanished.
Ian was still performing, drawing scornful attention to the fact that Lee had a longer queue: “Can you imagine all these people queueing to see Lee Cornes?!”  It sounds rude out of context but he was clearly joking.
I decided to ask Lee what flavour the yogurt Paranoia eats was.  He said it didn’t really taste of anything as it was the cheapest, nastiest canteen yogurt available and was also starting to curdle under the studio lights so eating it can’t have been much fun.
Since I now had about 15 minutes before I had to go, I caught a bit of Dibbley Family Fortunes, said goodbye to Amy, Lapsang and Barbs and then dashed off to catch the tram to the train station.  Another great DJ.

Not Jealous (Okay, Maybe a Little... Maybe a Lot)

fluff, set sometime in s13, tfw gets a visit from the djinn queen
(okay so in 13x16, Cas says he killed most of the djinn guarding the Tree of Life, but this fic ignores that bc I like to think that Cas is an excellent negotiator and actually became friends with the djinn and their queen :))

Dean was having a crappy Tuesday. And he’d had plenty of experience with bad Tuesdays.
He was sitting in the library trying to parse through a stack of books, organizing them according to random categories he was half-sure Sam had made up to specifically torture him.
They’d been busy with hunts all month and on their one day off, Sam had decided it was “organize the bunker” day. He was downstairs in one of the storage rooms happily cataloguing away. Dean was stuck up here, doing the same thing, less happily.
He was tossing a book onto the Sewer Dwelling Monsters pile when the bunker door screeched open.
“Hey,” he called, grabbing another book and leafing through it. “You better have remembered to pick up beer and pie because I’m going crazy here.”
“Dean, we have a visitor.”
And that’s when Dean’s Tuesday got worse.
Dean looked up to see Cas standing on the stairway next to a ridiculously tall man—and that was saying something when they lived with Sasquatch himself. Dean only needed one look at the black tattoos snaking over the man’s bald head and forearms to realize he was a Djinn.
Quickly, Dean stood, pushing his chair back. “Who the hell are you?” he demanded.
The man fixed him with a heavy stare, then proceeded to scan the room. Cas spoke up, “Don’t worry, he’s not a threat.” To the man, he said, “I promise it’s safe in here.”
“What—” Dean started, then the man nodded once and motioned to someone beyond the doorway.
In a loud voice, he announced, “May I present Queen of the Djinn, her majesty Zara.”
At his words, a woman swept through the door, dressed in a long, dark cloak, her arms and neck also covered in Djinn tattoos.
“Why, Castiel,” she said, gazing around the room. “What a lovely home you have. I have to say, though, I didn’t expect you to live underground.”
“I’m sorry,” Dean spoke up. “Who the fuck are you?”
The woman turned her eyes on him and Cas shifted uncomfortably. He was holding several reusable grocery bags in his hands. “Dean, this is Zara. My, uh, betrothed.”
“Your what?” Dean spluttered and the woman—Queen Zara, apparently—started down the stairs, her dress and cloak sweeping behind her.
“You must be Dean Winchester,” she said. “Castiel told me about you.” Reaching the bottom of the staircase, she extended her hand palm down, and Dean stared at it. He settled on shaking it, unsure whether she was expecting him to bow or kiss her hand.
“Sorry, can we back up for a second?” He looked up at Cas who was following the other Djinn down the stairs. “Did you say betrothed?”
“Yes,” Zara answered brightly.
“Okay,” Dean said, slowly, unsure if he was understanding this correctly. Cas looked a little guilty. “Care to elaborate, Cas?”
“I may have technically become married to Zara when I went in search of the fruit of the Tree of Life.” Dean raised his eyebrows, and he added, “And I may have forgotten to tell you.”
“You forgot to tell me?” Dean repeated.
“I was going to,” Cas said. “But then we ended up in that cartoon with the talking dog and there was so much going on—”
“If I may,” Zara interjected, and Dean realized Zara and the man, presumably her bodyguard, were watching them go back and forth. “I see there’s been a miscommunication. See, when Castiel arrived for negotiations to obtain the fruit of the Tree of Life, we Djinn were in the middle of a war. I asked for Castiel’s hand in marriage in exchange for giving him the fruit, and we pledged ourselves to each other, agreeing to hold the official binding ceremonies later when the war didn’t require all my focus.”
Dean glared at Cas. Pledged themselves to each other? Cas ducked his head with a sheepish look and set his grocery bags on the table.
Unbothered, Zara continued, “Now that the war has ended, I am able to turn my thoughts towards finalizing our relationship. I came to reunite with dear Castiel and bring him back to my kingdom for our official wedding ceremony.”
“Hold on,” Dean spoke up. “Wedding? Bring him back—Cas ain’t gonna marry you.”
Zara’s eye twitched. “I think that’s up to Castiel, isn’t it, Dean?”
Dean looked to Cas for help, who spoke up, “I’m afraid Dean is right, Zara. I’m sorry, but I don’t think I realized the extent of the commitment I made. I can’t marry you.”
Dean eyed Zara and her bodyguard, tensing for a fight, but Zara’s reaction was only to smile and pat Cas’ shoulder.
“It’s no surprise that you would feel that way, Castiel,” she said. “We hardly know each other, after all. I confess, part of my reasoning for journeying here was to see the real you, to learn about you. I’m eager for us to grow closer during our time together.”
“During our time—” Dean was interrupted by Zara clapping her hands. Instantly, the bunker door opened to admit a line of other Djinn who filed down the stairs, all carrying baskets or trunks or cases.
Dean stared at them. “What the fuck…”
“There’s more of them,” Cas said unhelpfully.
“Alright, we need to talk.” Grabbing Cas’ arm, Dean pulled him into the adjacent hallway. “Stay right there!” he told Zara, jabbing his finger at her.
“Dean, I’m sorry,” Cas started as Dean dragged him into the hallway.
“Dude, what the fuck? Getting freaking engaged to a Djinn isn’t just something you forget to tell us about!”
“I was preoccupied!” Cas protested.
“And now you’re gonna let them into the bunker? Are you crazy?”
“They’re not a threat, Dean. Zara is very different from the Djinn we’ve encountered before.”
Footsteps sounded behind them and Dean turned to see Sam running over. “What’s going on out here, what’s all that noise?”
“We’ve been invaded by the Djinn,” Dean said, and Sam’s eyes widened.
“What? How? I’ll grab guns—”
“No, Sam.” Cas put out his hand to stop Sam from bolting down the hallway. “It’s not like that, they’re friendly.”
“Oh, so now you’re buddies with them?” Dean asked.
Cas shot him a look and started explaining the situation to Sam. Shaking his head, Dean peeked out through the doorway to watch the Djinn pile their belongings on the map table, Zara giving instructions.
Preoccupied? Really? Then again, communication never had been one of his and Cas’ strengths.
There were about ten other Djinn besides Zara and her bodyguard. One of the men set down a large trunk and Dean winced at the scuffing noise it made on the floor. Then the man opened the trunk and Dean startled, realizing it was filled with weapons and blades.
“Hey!” he protested, storming into the room. “No weapons allowed in here. You don’t wanna start something with us, this is our home turf.”
The bodyguard stepped forward, cracking his knuckles, but Zara only laughed. “This is a friendly visit, Dean, I assure you. These items are for Castiel, as part of my dowry.” She brightened, seeing Sam and Cas enter the room. “Sam Winchester, I presume?” She extended her hand. “It is a pleasure to meet you.”
Sam took her hand and made an awkward nod, half bow. “Um, uh, pleasure."
“Charming,” Zara said with a laugh. She looked at Cas. “You were right, he does have such beautiful hair.”
Dean rolled his eyes and Zara motioned around the room. “As you can see, we’ve brought quite a few things. Would you mind having your attendants show mine to the cookery? We brought food for a feast.”
“Um, we don’t have attendants,” Cas said. He looked to Dean for help, and when Dean didn’t offer any assistance—Cas was the one who had gotten them into this mess—he said, “I can show you around.”
He headed off with Zara, her attendants holding baskets of food, and her bodyguard, who cast a suspicious look at Dean before following.
Dean glared at their retreating backs. “A feast? What the hell is happening?”
“She seems nice,” Sam commented.
“Nice? Did you miss the part where she’s engaged to Cas?”
“Yeah. Weird.” He started for the library. “I think we have a few books on Djinn. I wonder how binding their engagements are.”
Dean stared at his retreating back, then at the doorway where Cas and the Djinn had left through. “What the hell is going on?” he asked aloud.
A peek into the kitchen showed the Djinn plating food and cooking—Dean had to force himself to walk away before he started a war with them by barging in and demanding they stop touching his stove.
He followed Zara’s annoyingly regal voice to the hallway outside the bedrooms where Cas was apparently giving a tour to her and her bodyguard.
“How many people live here?” she asked as Dean walked over.
“Just the four of us,” Jack said.
Oh, so now Jack was in on it too. He smiled, noticing Dean. “Dean! You should try these cookies.” He held up something that looked suspiciously like what the Djinn had been putting on plates in the kitchen.
So now they were bribing his family with food? Crossing his arms, Dean said, “I don’t know if you noticed, Zara, but we weren’t exactly expecting you or your, uh, attendants. Just how long are you planning to stay here?”
“At least a week,” she answered, shattering any hope that they might be gone by 6pm. “Cas was just showing us all these extra bedrooms where we can stay.”
Dean glared at Cas, who avoided his eyes and motioned to Zara to follow him down the hallway. “Um, over here is where we keep archival documents,” he said.
Jack made to follow and Dean grabbed his elbow. “What’s her deal?” he asked, watching Zara and her bodyguard follow Cas down the hallway.
“What do you mean?” Jack asked, following his gaze.
“She barges in here with a dozen Djinn saying she’s engaged to Cas? Are they trying to infiltrate us? Can you tell if she’s evil?”
“She isn’t saying she’s engaged, she is engaged to Cas.” Jack finished off his cookie. “Cas told me, when he came back from Zara’s kingdom.”
“He told you?” And not me? he wanted to add.
Maybe it was implied on his face because Jack looked mildly uncomfortable. “I can tell, she isn’t evil. She’s friendly.”
“What else did Cas say about her?” Dean asked, trying not to sound too interested or concerned. No need to panic; Cas had only gotten engaged to obtain the Tree of Life fruit. Not like Cas was actually into the Queen.
“Cas said she was very nice, but that he was in a rush and didn’t realize what was happening until it was too late. I don’t think he thought she would come after him.”
“Yeah, he looks real concerned,” Dean muttered, hearing Cas’ voice echo down the hallway along with Zara’s laughter.
Wiping crumbs off his hands, Jack said, “I’m gonna get another cookie.”
Stopping to grab his gun first, Dean followed Jack back to the kitchen. He swore, if the Djinn made a mess… But the room was empty and surprisingly clean for the amount of activity that had just been going on in there.
They followed the sound of voices to the library where the tables had been pushed together and covered in platters and dishes. Dean stopped in the doorway, staring.
“Cool!” Jack exclaimed, going over to a plate stacked high with cookies.
“I told them we could have the feast in here,” Sam said at Dean’s elbow and Dean startled.
“You told them—” Fuming, he glared at the Djinn talking to Jack. “What’s the verdict? How many do I gotta kill to get Cas out of this engagement?”
“Put the gun away, you don’t have to kill anyone. According to a book I found, as long as Zara agrees to call the engagement off before the wedding begins, Cas isn’t tied to her.” He gestured to the book shelves. “You know, this isn’t such a bad thing, them being here. We've never actually gotten to talk to any Djinn before, and the Men of Letters don’t have much information on them.”
“Of course you’d be a nerd about this,” Dean complained. He nodded at where Zara was entering the room talking with Cas. “Don’t think she’s gonna give Cas up that easily. She already seems pretty attached.”
“I’m sure Cas will talk to her, let her know this is all a misunderstanding. In the meantime, try to be friendly, okay? We can’t risk getting the Djinn on our bad side.”
“We could take them,” Dean said and Sam gave him his patented bitch face. He huffed. “Fine.”
A clinking noise drew Dean’s attention to where Zara was standing at the head of the table, tapping a glass with a spoon. The room grew quiet and she announced, “I want to say thank you to the Winchesters and my betrothed Castiel for so graciously welcoming us into their home. I hope this meal marks the beginning of a wonderful alliance between us Djinn and the hunters. Now let us eat!”
Everyone moved to take a seat, Zara gesturing for Cas to sit at her right hand side. Dean pointedly took a spot close by to keep an eye on her. “I think you’ll enjoy this dish,” Zara said, passing him a bowl. “Cas tells me you’re the cook here.”
“Uh—” Dean took the bowl and ladled what looked like mashed potatoes on his plate. “When’d he have time to tell you that?”
Zara waved her hand. “We talked some when he came to my kingdom. He told me all about you and your brother and why you needed the Tree of Life’s fruit. I must thank you for saving the world quite a few times.”
“Uh, yeah. Sure.”
“You’re welcome,” Sam spoke up.
Cas had been telling Zara about him? Inconsequential stuff, like that he cooked? Gathering himself, he said, “You know, we’ve encountered plenty Djinn before you.” He ignored the death stare Sam shot at him. “Had to kill plenty too. You wanna tell me how I’m supposed to trust you? What’s stopping you from poisoning all of us?”
Sam cleared his throat and the bodyguard standing behind Zara’s chair glowered at Dean. Dean glared back.
“Those Djinn were not part of my kingdom,” Zara said solemnly. “Our most sacred law is to never bring anyone harm. If I had found those Djinn you speak of, they would’ve been brought to a swift justice.” She glanced at Cas. “I’ve already gained the trust of Castiel, I'd hoped I had your trust as well.”
“You do,” Sam said quickly, side-eying Dean. “Dean’s just being, uh, cautious.”
Cas nodded, and across the table, Jack tore into his meal, seemingly not worried at all that the Djinn had prepared it. Sam gave Dean a pointed look and Dean rolled his eyes. So, Zara and her crew weren’t evil and apparently didn’t mean them any harm. Didn’t mean Dean was going to fall over himself trying to be friends.
Ignoring Sam’s record-setting bitch face, he hesitantly started eating, finding to his annoyance that Zara was right. This food was pretty damn good.
He kept his mouth shut throughout the rest of dinner. Zara answered Sam’s questions about her kingdom, about the community the Djinn had created in the mountains, hidden from humans. According to her, it was “Heaven on Earth.”
Scowling, Dean drank from the goblet in front of him. Some kind of concoction he wasn’t sure he liked or not. Zara sure was laying it on thick. When she mentioned royal gardens, Dean saw the moment interest flared in Cas’ eyes.
For fuck’s sake. Of course Zara loved to garden. Bet she had a whole bee farm, or whatever they called those. Anything to get in Cas’ pants, no doubt.
He tried another sip from the goblet and grimaced. No, not good, he decided. Way too similar to the healthy crap Sam was always eating. Cas asked about the plants Zara had in her gardens, and Dean wondered why Cas had never planted a garden here at the bunker. He was always talking about the benefits of spending time in nature since, apparently, they didn’t get enough sunlight living in an underground bunker. Then again, Dean hadn’t ever really taken Cas’ talk about gardens and sustainability seriously. He categorized Cas’ interest in plants and bees as just another example of what a dork he was. A powerful angel of the Lord, but a dork all the same.
“I’m so happy to see you again,” Zara told Cas as a few of her attendants served what Dean guessed was some kind of Djinn desert, some weird pale pudding. She leaned forward and took one of Cas’ hands, and Dean clenched his own hands into fists under the table.
Zara stroked her thumb over Cas’ knuckles. “Now that our tribe is at peace with our warring siblings to the North, we are looking to expand relations with other kinds. Humans, for instance, and angels. I think you can be a strong ally in making that happen.”
“I can try,” Cas said. He looked uncomfortable, staring at her holding his hand, and Dean remembered sitting across him in a brothel, trying to get him laid on possibly his last night on Earth. Good times. Even after years of being on Earth and talking to women, Cas never lost the deer in the headlights look when one of them showed interest in him. The sight gave Dean a strange satisfaction. Zara had no chance with Cas.
She was going to give it her best shot, though. As if a feast wasn’t enough, after dinner, Zara presented Cas with gifts—ornate swords and knives with gilded handles, books detailing the Djinn history and folklore, robes and cloaks like the ones Zara and her entourage wore. Cas kept a polite smile on his face, but Dean saw the increasingly overwhelmed look in his eyes at the sheer amount of gifts.
Dean felt similarly overwhelmed and, somewhere along the line, he decided he’d had enough of Zara doing her damndest to impress Cas, touching his arm at any given chance. She had Sam and Jack under her spell too, it seemed, because neither of them were bothered by the ridiculous show she was putting on.
Even when he left the library and shut the door to his room, voices and laughter carried down the hallway. He was glad everyone else was having a good time and completely ignoring the absurdity of this situation. Cas? Engaged? And to royalty?
Seething, he sat on his bed and turned on the TV, trying to distract himself. He didn’t know how much time had passed before he realized he was watching an infomercial for a nonstick pan.
A knock on his door sounded and he swore under his breath. “Go away, Sam,” he called. If he had to get another lecture about hospitality…
“It’s just me.”
Dean straightened, said, “Come in,” and Cas opened the door, holding a grocery bag.
“I know, I know,” Dean said. “Don’t be rude to our guests, blah blah blah. I get it.”
“You were very rude to Zara,” Cas agreed, shutting the door behind him. “She’s only trying to be kind.”
Dean scoffed. “Yeah. Kind. That’s all.” Cas stared at him, cocking his head, and Dean rolled his eyes. Of fucking course Cas would be oblivious to Zara flirting with him. “You finally get through the fuckton of gifts she brought?”
Cas sighed. “It was too much. I don’t know what I’m supposed to do with it all.”
“Don’t worry, I’m sure Sam will be up early organizing everything.” He nodded at the bag in Cas’ hand. “What’s that?”
“Oh, um,” Cas glanced down at it. “I thought you might want this.”
Dean took it from him and looked inside. The pie and beer he’d requested from the grocery store earlier that day. “Thanks,” he said.
Cas stepped closer to the bed, then hesitated. Dean motioned for him to sit and Cas did so on the edge of the bed, away from Dean’s legs. He glanced at the TV. “We should have another movie night soon. We haven’t had one in a long time.”
“Yeah. Sure.” He was pretty sure Cas was just trying to appease him, though he didn’t know why. He was the one who’d been rude to Zara, Cas’ “betrothed.”
He opened a beer and watched Cas out of the corner of his eye, heart starting to quicken a little, as it always did when he was alone with him. It was ridiculous, because he and Cas were just friends. Obviously. He didn’t know why he had to remind himself so often.
Cas twisted a loose thread on his trenchcoat sleeve. “Dean,” he started.
“Your girlfriend’s gonna start looking for you soon,” Dean interrupted. Cas lifted his head and squinted at him. “She sure is trying to impress you, going on and on about her kingdom.”
“It's a very beautiful place,” Cas said. “I wouldn’t mind visiting again. But I wouldn’t want to live there.” He studied him and Dean looked away, picked at lint on the comforter. “Dean, she may be trying to impress me, but I have no intention of marrying her, I never did. This whole situation is an unfortunate accident.”
Dean cleared his throat. “Right. Yeah. Of course.” Obviously. I know that. Didn’t mean Zara fawning over Cas didn’t make his skin crawl.
Cas looked like he wanted to say more, but he stood. “I suppose I should return to the library. Are you coming?”
“Uh, yeah, in a bit,”
Cas left and Dean stared at the closed door, then down at his pie. It shouldn’t matter what Cas did, who he was interested in, who flirted with him. Not like Dean had any say in the matter, not like they were dating or something—which was not an option. Because Cas was just a friend. His best friend, but a friend all the same.
Sighing, he picked up his pie and beer before he left his room. He was going to need them if he was going to have to watch Zara and Cas interact.
***
The next day, Zara and her entourage showed no signs of going home. Dean ran into several of them in the bathroom down the hall, two sitting in the kitchen talking to Jack, and four more in one of the archival rooms helping Sam—as Dean had suspected—catalogue Cas’ gifts.
Zara and Cas he found talking in the library, continuing a conversation from last night about agricultural practices in her kingdom. Apparently there was a lot to say on the topic. Last night, before going to bed, Zara had made some cheeky remark about waiting after the official wedding ceremony to consummate her and Cas’ marriage, and Dean had wanted to rip her head off. It only made things worse that apparently Cas wasn’t bothered by that remark, but of course not—Zara liked gardening and was cultured and had given him a million and one presents. There was no real reason to hate her, though that wouldn't stop Dean.
He paused in the library’s doorway, before Cas and Zara could spot him, and caught the tail end of what Zara was saying,
“I know that you are distanced from Heaven, as evidenced by you living with hunters.”
Dean bristled at the underlying meaning in her words—Cas had no place with him and Sam. They were just gross humans.
Zara continued, “We have many in my kingdom who have been displaced from their homes, who are no longer a part of their own. I think you will find us to be an accepting community.”
“I’m sure I would,” Cas said, and Dean’s heart sunk. “But Heaven hasn’t been my home in a long time. This is my home now.”
Dean felt a little stunned at his words. Cas said it so emphatically. As if the bunker wasn’t just a place he’d ended up, but somewhere he chose to be, wanted to be.
Making a U-turn, he grabbed his keys and jacket and took Baby out for a drive. Unfortunately, even the rushing wind through the windows and the blaring music on the radio couldn’t distract him from his thoughts.
Did Cas really think of the bunker as home? Here? With him and Sam and Jack? Well, of course, he told himself. Cas lived here, didn’t he?
It was more than that, though, Dean knew. Cas had rebelled against Heaven to help them. Stuck by their sides for years. If this wasn’t his home, then where else?
And who did Zara think she was? She thought Cas needed a home, that she could give him one. As if they weren’t good enough for him. Well, Dean knew Cas deserved a lot better, but they got along pretty well. Had been through enough shit together, at least.
Zara had met Cas only once; she hadn’t stopped apocalypses and faced demons with him. Dean knew Cas better than anyone, or so he liked to think. Cas knew him better than anyone, at least.
That’s what this is, he told himself. Why Zara annoyed him so much. He was just pissed that Zara thought she knew what was best for Cas. It didn’t matter that Cas seemed to get along well with her, that she had so much in common with him, that she wanted to marry him. Technically, if Cas wanted to marry her too, that wasn’t a problem either.
He gripped the steering wheel tighter and glared out at the road. Not a problem.
When the sky was dark, he returned from his drive to a quiet bunker. Zara and her attendants were nowhere to be seen, and as he came down the stairs, Cas walked into the war room.
“Where were you?” he asked, stopping short.
Dean shrugged. “Just out for a drive.” He held out a plastic bag. “Here.”
Frowning, Cas took it from him and pulled out two packets of seeds. “Tomato seeds?” he asked, studying them.
“Just thought, I don’t know. You’re always talking about nature and whatever. You could start a garden outside. If you want.”
Cas looked up at him, some unreadable emotion on his face. Dean almost asked if a garden was still in the works, or if Cas had started to envision the Djinn gardens. “Figure even if you don’t eat you should contribute to dinner,” he said instead. “Start growing food.”
Cas smiled and looked back at the seeds. “Thank you, Dean. That's very thoughtful of you.”
Dean felt his face heat. Looking around, he asked, “Where’s her majesty?”
“She went to bed.”
“She try to seduce you?”
Cas cocked his head. “No. Why would she?”
“Uh, maybe because she’s trying to marry you.”
“Well, I’m not marrying her. I think she understands that.”
Dean raised an eyebrow. “You sure about that?”
“I’ve made my intentions clear, Dean.”
“Right,” Dean said, not convinced. Cas studied him, the familiar, peculiar squint to his eyes and Dean nearly squirmed. Turning, he said, “I’m going to bed.”
He passed Sam in the hallway near the bedrooms. “Hey,” he said, not stopping.
“Dean,” Sam called, and he turned. “You alright? Where were you all day?”
“Just wanted to get away from our million visitors. I’m fine.”
“Is, um… Is everything alright with you and Cas? He was wondering where you went.”
Dean crossed his arms. “We’re fine. I mean, he brought the Djinn here, but nothing we can do about it now.”
“Right. Um. Well, it’s just…” Sam looked like he was choosing his words carefully. “You’ve been acting… Well, acting kinda weird around Zara and Cas.” Dean stared at him. “Like you’re jealous or something.”
“I’m not fucking jealous! What the hell is there to be jealous about?”
Sam raised his hands. “I’m just telling you what I see.”
“Well, you’re fucking wrong.” Sam started to speak, but Dean ignored him and turned on his heel, continued to his room. “I’m not fucking jealous,” he muttered under his breath.
I’m not jealous, he repeated to himself the next day, watching Zara and Cas talk over breakfast. Or the next, which played out the same way: too many strangers wandering the hallways, Zara taking up all of Cas’ attention. Not that Dean needed Cas’ attention; he just didn’t see how Cas could be so oblivious to Zara’s intentions.
Unless Cas wasn’t oblivious and he was actually interested in Zara.
Absurd, Dean told himself. But the idea sat heavy in his stomach anyway. I’m not jealous, he told himself again. He was starting to sound less convincing.
***
“Hey where’s Cas?”
Zara looked up from where she and Sam were poring over books in the library. Sam frowned, looking around. “I haven’t seen him yet today.”
“If you find him, tell him to join us,” Zara said, “Sam and I are going through the Men of Letters’ books on the Djinn. I’m afraid there are quite a few historical inaccuracies.”
“Right, sure.” Leaving the library, Dean headed back through the hallways, wondering where Cas could’ve gone. He hadn’t left Zara’s side much in the five days she’d been here.
Maybe he’s finally gotten annoyed with her, he thought hopefully.
When his search through the bunker proved futile, Dean had a thought and headed outside. Sure enough, a few yards from the bunker door, next to a bag of potting soil and a tray of small green containers, Cas sat cross legged on the grass holding one of the seed packets Dean had bought for him.
“Hey,” Dean said and Cas looked up at him.
“Hello.” He began placing the seeds into the containers and Dean stood there awkwardly, watching. Maybe planting the seeds was a sign; maybe this meant Cas was planning to stay. Or maybe it meant Cas was going to take his tomato plants with him to Zara’s kingdom.
When Cas remained silent, Dean started turning away to leave him to his planting. “You can fill this tray with soil,” Cas spoke up, stopping him.
“Um, okay.” Sitting down next to him, Dean scooped soil out of the bag with a shovel and poured it carefully into the planting containers. Cas smoothed soil over the seeds he'd planted.
“Zara and Sam sure are getting along well,” Dean said after a few minutes of silence. “They’re going through the books in the library right now. Apparently there’s a lot of ‘inaccuracies’ in them.”
“Hmm.” There was a smudge of dirt on Cas’ chin that Dean was more than tempted to wipe off. Looking away, he poured more dirt in the containers before he was idiotic enough to try.
The weather was warm, a breeze rustling the leafy tree branches around them. Dean wished he could relax, but being in such close proximity to Cas was making his pulse race, per usual. Maybe even more so now, considering the way he’d been feeling lately. Not jealousy, he told himself. Just, concern. Friendly concern for Cas.
Unwittingly, he thought of the way Zara looked at Cas, spoke to him, touched him, and he gripped the shovel tighter in his hand. Okay. Fine. Maybe Sam was sorta right. Maybe he was a little jealous. It didn’t mean anything though.
Realizing Cas had stopped planting seeds, he glanced sideways at him. Cas was letting soil sift through his fingers, a crease between his brows and a seriousness in his gaze that didn’t match the gentle way his fingers moved through the dirt. Dean started to wonder if Cas had come out here to get away from everyone, if something was on his mind.
“You and your plants there wanna get a room?” he asked and, fuck, that wasn’t what he wanted to say. Words were hard.
Cas glanced at him, then his recently planted seeds, and dropped the dirt he was holding. Apropos of nothing, he said, “Zara said she’ll call off the engagement if I really want.”
Dean’s initial surge of relief faded away when Cas kept glaring at the soil. Since he was pretty sure the tomato seeds hadn’t done anything to bother him, he asked, suddenly nervous, “Do you want to call it off?”
“Yes, Dean. I don’t want to marry her.” Looking away, he brushed dirt from his hands.
“But?” Dean pressed.
Cas sighed. “But she wants me to come back with her. Just for a visit. And I don’t know if I should.” He reached for a watering can at his side. “Zara and the other members of her kingdom were very welcoming when I first visited, and I’ve enjoyed taking to Zara during her stay here, but we have work to do. I can’t just leave.”
They did have work to do, but that was nothing new. Dean looked around at the start of Cas’ garden, at the slight rise of dirt a few yards away that marked the bunker underground. Maybe this was home for Cas, but it couldn’t compare to a kingdom, not how Zara described it. Begrudgingly, he thought of Cas and Zara's similar interests and her descriptions of her kingdom and how perfect it would be for Cas.
“Maybe you should visit,” he said, hating the way the words felt in his mouth. Cas frowned at him and he added, “Not saying you should marry Zara, but sounds like a cool place.” One part of his brain screamed at him to shut up shut up shut up, but the other told him this was the mature thing to do. Give Cas the freedom to make up his own mind.
Cas nodded, not meeting his eyes. “I don’t know.” he said quietly. “But if you really think so...”
“Yeah, of course,” Dean said, feeling a little sick. Ignoring the sensation, he pat Cas on the shoulder. “Whatever you want.”
Take that, Sam. Could a jealous person do this?
***
Encouraging Cas to leave with his Djinn friends may have been the mature thing to do, but that didn’t stop it from hurting like hell. Going back inside, Dean holed up into his room, not wanting to hear Zara’s gleeful excitement when Cas told her he was going back with her to her kingdom. He had a feeling Zara wasn’t going to be calling off the engagement anytime soon.
He didn’t emerge until that night, when sounds of conversation and activity had diminished outside his door. One thing he had to say for the Djinn, despite the number of them staying over, the bunker had never been cleaner and they’d all obeyed his command to stay out of the garage. Begrudgingly, he had to admit it wasn’t so bad having them over. If only Zara wasn’t actively trying to impress Cas.
How many days had they been here? They’d probably be leaving soon. His stomach twisted at the thought, knowing they would take Cas with them.
Just for a visit, he told himself. He’ll be back.
He went into the library looking for a drink and found Zara and Cas poring over books side by side.
“Oh, hey,” he said, stopping in the doorway.
Cas looked up at him, a worried expression on his face. “Are you alright, Dean? You disappeared all day.”
Why does everyone keep asking me that? Going to a side table, he poured himself a drink. “Yeah. Just tired.”
“I’m sure it must be exhausting hosting so many visitors all week,” Zara said. You don’t know the half of it, Dean thought. “But don’t worry, we’ll be out of your hair tomorrow.”
Dean turned, nearly spilling his whiskey. “Wait, what?”
Zara smiled at him. “We’re returning to my kingdom tomorrow.”
He thought he’d have a few more days… “Tomorrow?” he managed.
“Yes. I’m afraid I can’t stay forever, my people need me back home. And I know they will be waiting to hear news of my betrothed.” She pat Cas’ hand and Cas turned red.
“Oh. Right,” Dean managed. “Okay.”
He tried to say something else, then turned and left the room in a rush. Tomorrow. Cas was gonna leave and Dean had told him he should go.
The kitchen was empty and he sat at the table, stared at the glass in his hand.
I’m being an idiot, he thought. Cas can do whatever he wants, he doesn’t have to stay here. Probably been looking for an out for ages.
Needing to do something with his hands, he stood and grabbed ingredients from the cupboards. Without really thinking about it, he started making a pie, mixing the ingredients with more force than was necessary.
“Fucking ridiculous,” he muttered under his breath, rolling out the pie dough. Tell Cas to go to a Djinn kingdom, that’s smart. With Zara of all people? He’s gonna come back officially married to her, talking about the royal gardens. Or just not come back at all.
“Fuck,” he muttered, throwing open the fridge door to grab the butter.
“What’re you doing?”
Dean wheeled around to see Sam standing in the doorway. “What’s it look like?” He slammed shut the fridge door. “Making a goddamn pie.”
“At…” Sam leaned forward to see the time on the microwave. “2:14am?”
“Is it a crime to make a pie at 2am? I had a craving.”
“What are you, pregnant?”
Dean flipped him off and Sam leaned on the doorway. “Don’t see why you’re in such a bad mood. You should be glad; Zara’s leaving tomorrow. You’ve been bitching all week about the ‘invasion’.”
Pausing in draping the pie crust dough over the filling, Dean stared at him. Glad? Was no one else seeing the problem here? “What, you going with them too? Packed your bags yet? Zara seems to have put you under her spell too.”
Sam frowned. “Dean, you don’t think Cas—“
“It doesn’t matter,” Dean said quickly. “He can do whatever he wants.”
“Yeah, but you got this all wrong.” Straightening from the doorway, Sam came to the island. “Cas isn’t going with the Djinn.”
“How do you know?”
“Because he isn’t! Why the hell would he?”
Oh, I don’t know, Dean thought. Maybe because Zara is fucking perfect for him and knows exactly what he wants and knows how to actually talk to him and not act like a goddamn idiot every time he’s in the room.
Furiously, he crimped the edges of the pie crust and accidentally tore a hole. “Son of a bitch!”
“Okay...” Sam said, watching him. “I don’t know what the hell’s going on with you, but snap out of it. Cas isn’t going anywhere and maybe if you talked to him, you’d know that. Or even just stopped to think for a second.”
“Fuck off,” Dean said, and Sam threw up his hands.
“Fine,” he said, leaving the room. “But you’re freaking out over nothing.”
Dean glared at him and put his pie in the oven, sat back down. He’d done plenty of thinking and like it or not, it didn’t seem completely outside the realm of possibility that Cas would want to be with someone who understood him and appreciated him. Not that Dean didn’t understand or appreciate him, of course he did. Cas was his best friend and Cas had saved his life countless times and Cas was Cas—he was dorky and sarcastic and weird and considerate and too fucking earnest in a way that made Dean squirm while also being secretly jealous of how Cas could just say things and, and—
And fuck he wanted Cas to stay.
He didn’t know how long he stared at the table, but he startled when the timer beeped to announce his pie was done. He glanced at the oven, then looked around the empty room.
"I think I really like him," he said aloud.
Taking the pie out of the oven, Dean grabbed plates and silverware and headed to the library, hardly knowing what he was doing, just hoping to find Cas. Thankfully, Cas was still there, sitting alone.
“Made pie,” Dean announced eloquently, setting everything down.
Cas looked up and shut the book he was reading. “Oh.”
Tossing his oven mitts to the side, Dean cut a slice and wordlessly slid the plate to Cas. Cas stared at him like he had two heads. “Figured you might want to try it,” he said. “See what the molecules taste like.” In truth, he was stalling. He didn’t know what to say to Cas, how to share his recent epiphany that yes, he was jealous, and yes, he did like his best friend, and yes, he was panicking a little.
Cas looked like he had a few questions, but he took the plate. “Thank you,” he said.
“No problem.” Dean’s hands were sweating as he served himself his own slice and sat down across from Cas. He had been hungry before, but now his stomach clenched in anxiety, too many words rolling around in his head with no coherency.
Cas picked up his fork and Dean figured the best way to start was with the truth.
“Don’t go,” he blurted out.
Cas paused, fork poised midair. “What?”
Dean’s face flushed, but it was either speak now or regret it forever. “I know I said you should leave with Zara, but I didn’t mean it.”
Cas slowly lowered his fork, and it seemed speaking a few words broke down a wall in Dean’s mind because the rest came flooding out.
“I know I can be a real dick,” he said, “and I know I don’t know anything about gardening or agriculture, and I know I’ve been acting weird lately, but it’s because I really don’t want Zara to take you away from us. And maybe that’s selfish on my end—no, I know it is. But she doesn’t know you, really know you! And I do. I’ve known you forever and you’re my best friend and also maybe I wish we were more.” His face heated further, and he quickly added, “It’s alright if you don’t want more, that’s fine, just forget this conversation, but the main point is that I don’t want you to leave. I mean that. Please stay.”
Cas’ gaze had turned serious during Dean’s rambling, and Dean stopped there, heart pounding, mouth dry. He hadn’t expected to say all that, but he realized he meant what he’d said. Had meant all of it for a long time now, even if he’d been pretending not to. And maybe it was too late to tell Cas now. But he’d finally said it.
“Dean,” Cas said, and Dean braced himself for the I’m sorry, but... The, you suck and I’m leaving with Zara. Or even, you want more? That’s absurd. Why the hell would we ever be more than friends?
But what Cas said, instead, was, “I thought you wanted me to leave.”
Dean stared at him. And, yeah, he guessed he had told Cas to leave. But Cas should know by now that he was an idiot who usually said the wrong things. “I didn’t mean it,” he said. “I’ll go crazy if you leave, honest. I can’t…” He thought about how empty the bunker felt when Cas left for even a day, thought about how much it killed him to see Cas with Zara, and said, almost desperately, “I can’t do that. You leaving.”
Cas’ gaze had softened and his voice was quiet when he asked, “What do you mean by more?”
Dean’s heartbeat kicked up and he stared at his plate. Fuck. What did he mean? “I don’t know. Well, maybe I do. I just…” He took a deep breath and met Cas’ eyes. “I just want to be with you. Romantically, or whatever. More than just being friends.” He held Cas’ gaze even though his heart was pounding and a tiny voice in his brain screamed, abort mission, because it felt like such a relief to get the words out, albeit awkward and stilted.
Cas studied him and Dean’s pulse hammered in his chest as he waited for inevitable rejection. Instinct told him to backtrack, but now that he’d voiced everything, it seemed like torture to have to carry it all inside him again. He didn’t know how he’d done it for years.
Then Cas spoke. “I want more too,” he said, like it was the easiest thing to say in the world.
Dean stared at him. “You do?” he managed, and Cas nodded.
“I was never going to leave, Dean. This,” he gestured around them. “This is my home. Here with you. I want to be with you too.”
“Oh,” Dean breathed. Cas never was going to leave. He started to feel a little ridiculous for his panicked pie baking, but a smile tugged at the corner of Cas’ mouth and Dean started smiling too. Cas wanted more.
“Can I… Can I kiss you?” he asked and Cas nodded. He started pushing his chair back, then Dean was standing and meeting him by his chair.
Raising his hand, he touched Cas’ cheek. He was feeling a little dizzy from the remarkable change of events in so short a time, but the look in Cas’ eyes anchored him. This is what he wanted, had been wanting.
Cas’ eyes fell shut when he leaned down to kiss him, and Dean smiled a little before pressing his lips to Cas’, finally.
His brain short circuited a little when Cas kissed him back, and it was a second before he could process the way Cas was pressing up close to him, hands gripping at his shirt. Slipping his arms around Cas’ waist, he pulled him flush, chest to chest. Cas made a small noise in the back of his throat and wrapped his arms around Dean’s neck. Dean’s head spun.
They kissed until Dean couldn’t catch his breath, until he felt weak at the knees. He let out a breathless laugh when they broke apart, and Cas smiled at him.
“I’ve wanted more for a long time,” he said. “I didn’t think you did too.”
“Yeah, well,” Dean kissed him again, pausing to say, “I guess I just never admitted it to myself.”
“And you realized this while making pie?” Cas asked, gesturing to the dish on the table.
“Yeah,” Dean admitted, a little sheepishly. “But better late than never, right?”
“Right,” Cas said with a smile and kissed him.
Dean kissed him back, then took his hand, tugged him to the hallway. Cas followed easily, smiling, and Dean couldn’t resist kissing him again along the way.
They eventually made it to Dean’s bedroom, but Cas paused when Dean grabbed the doorknob. “Hold on.”
Letting go of Dean’s hand, he went to the room where Zara was staying and knocked on her door.
After a few moments, she opened it in a silk nightgown. “Why, hello, Castiel,” she said smiling. “What a surprise.”
“I need you to annul our engagement,” Cas said and Zara’s smile froze. Dean bit back a grin. “Now,” Cas added.
“I—Um. I thought we would discuss this further at a later time. Perhaps allow you more time to decide—”
“I’ve decided.” Cas motioned to Dean, and Zara leaned out to see him standing there. Dean waved. “My home is here.”
Zara blinked at them and Dean stepped forward. “What he means is,” he snaked his hand around Cas’ waist, “he’s taken.”
Cas grinned at him and Zara looked mildly stricken, staring back and forth between them. Then resignation spread over her features and she smiled a little. “I see.” Waving her hand, she said, “Well, then. Consider yourself free of our engagement.”
“Thank you,” Cas said.
“Of course. It’s the least I can do to repay your hospitality. And I won’t stand in the way of true love.” She started to shut her door, then paused, looking at Dean, “And since I seem to be single once again, please tell your brother he is welcome to visit my kingdom anytime.” With a wink, she shut her door, and Dean stared at it for a moment.
“I don’t wanna unpack all that.” He looked at Cas and smiled a little. “You sure you don’t wanna marry her?”
Cas rolled his eyes. “I’m sure.” And, as if to prove his point, he kissed Dean again. Then he pulled back to meet Dean's eyes. "You haven't been jealous all this time, have you?"
"No," Dean said. Cas' eyes narrowed and Dean admitted, "Maybe a little." Okay, maybe a lot.

Levi's reaction to MC sitting on his lap and trying to ride his thigh discreetly?
CW: thigh riding, a little bit of exhibitionism, sexual context in public places
This is a mess but when are any of my fics not a mess
Also I know this isn’t really how Levi acts but I was having a confident Levi moment
Levi’s reaction to: GN!MC thigh riding him
Levi was sitting in the couch, legs spread. He was in between Mammon and Satan, scrolling through his D.D.D. as if he couldn’t care less about whatever was being discussed that day. Lucifer was already standing, as he’d do whenever he was getting too worked up over small things, and he all but hisses at you, Belphegor and Beelzebub as you enter the living room.
“Sorry,” Beelzebub says as he plops down onto the armchair nearest to the center table, where a bunch of small cucumber sandwiches rested upon a plate. “Belphie wasn’t waking up so I asked MC for help.”
Belphegor drops next to him on the floor, eyes meeting Lucifer’s. “It’s too early for this shit.” He announces, “Also, fuck you.” He closes his eyes, resting his head on the arm of the chair, ready to lull back to sleep.
Lucifer ignores him, an annoyed sigh escaping his lips. “It’s fine.” It’s clear it isn’t, but you try not to giggle at his antics.
You look around. There are no available seats. Belphegor and Beelzebub had taken the last one, and Asmodeus sat on the other armchair, Solomon next to him, looking a little lost.
Oh, so those were the noises you heard last night. Uh.
You screen the room once more, aware of Lucifer’s ever-growing anger at your inability to find a sitting place.
“Just pick wherever,” he says, making an effort to not sound pissed - it failed, but bless his heart.
Your eyes fall on Levi’s lap and you smirk to yourself. Without much ceremony, you go to him, take his hand onto yours so he’ll look up, and with the other, makes him close his legs together, before sitting down on him, your ass right above his crotch.
He makes a strangled noise, just as Asmodeus smirks.
“Well if MC  can, then Solo-”
“I’d rather not.” Solomon cuts him, eyes dead on Lucifer.
You look at Lucifer as well. His mouth is agape, gloved fingers gripping hard enough onto the paper he was holding that it crumpled it. His eyebrows are curved, almost perfectly crescent with his shock.
“You said wherever.” You shrugged.
Levi smiles, hands snaking around your waist. “You did.” He agrees, resting his chin atop your shoulder.
You lay back against his chest, happy to be able to do so. You had only recently made your relationship known, and while the brothers were still adjusting, you enjoyed the little extra moments of affection.
Levi’s newfound confidence isn’t something to shame, either.
He entwines his fingers over your stomach, sighing low, and snuggles up to your neck, inhaling your scent. Next to him, Mammon makes an exaggerated gagging sound.
“Can we get it over with? I don’t wanna watch this shit,” he gestures at your general direction, “and I have to meet some witches today.”
“Well I for one find it cute,” Asmodeus purred, leaning on hand. Next to him, Solomon not so discreetly pulled out his phone.
“And I, for one, would enjoy if you could keep quiet,” Lucifer warns.
Asmodeus sticks his tongue out to him, but sits back anyway, looking over whatever Solomon had pulled up on his phone.
“As I was saying…”
It was easy to tune out Lucifer for stuff like this. It wasn’t any news that, despite you living there for the exchange year, the brother’s opinions on whatever happened to the house was more important than yours. Not only because you are fine going along with whatever, but also because it just is. It’s their home.
With that in mind, you resist the urge to fish out your DDD. Trying to catch up to whatever Lucifer was going on about, you look up. He has pulled out a whiteboard filled with chores - from where you have no idea because he didn’t have it in the living room when you arrived.
Levi chuckles at something, and you follow his gaze. He’s playing a little dance game, not giving a single shit about his brother’s rambling. He titls the screen towards you.
“You should play this. We can be friends and see each other’s progress.” He whispers.
Your eyes catch the screen, where little chibi drawings of dolls that look suspiciously familiar dance. “Sure.” You point at the screen. “This one looks like Lucifer.”
Levi groans. “Great, now I can’t unsee that.”
“Leviathan, could you at least pretend like you care?” Lucifer cuts into your chat, making the both of you startle.
“Yeah, Levi!” Mammon mocks, “What part of getting this over with can’t you get? The great Mammon-”
“Belphie’s sleeping.” Levi points out, “I’ll listen when he does.”
“Don’t bother him,” Beelzebubs says through a mouthful of something that looked too akin to a napkin wrapped into a sandwich bite. “Belphie’s tired.”
“Belphie is always tired,” Satan seems to be done with the conversation quickly unfolding, “He’s the avatar of sloth, Beel.”
At some point during what now was escalating into a half-assed discussion - of which Asmodeus had taken time to take selfies with a very distraught Solomon, Levi’s legs had fallen apart again, making you slide in between them. Huffing, you stand up.
Everyone looks at you, expectant looks on their faces.
You flush. “Just, let him speak.” You say, falling back onto Levi’s lap, straddling his thigh this time.
“What are you…” He asks, looking in between his brothers.
“You move too much.” You answer, looking forward.
Lucifer has already gotten back to the topic at hand, and even Belphegor seems to be trying to pay attention by now.
It goes slowly from them on. No one talks much besides answering random questions Lucifer comes up with. At some point, everyone went back to doing their own thing, even as the lecture continued. Levi shows you the game once more.
Things get slow.
And you grow bored.
Just as an experiment - just to see his reaction - you grind down on Levi’s thigh, as discreetly as possible. You’re lucky that Lucifer is turned to the board, while everyone else is just ignoring it.
Levi’s hand comes to your waist and he squeezes it. “MC… what are you doing?”
You tilt back a little further on his lap, turn on your head in a strange angle to touch your lips to his ear. “Did you know… I’m not wearing any underwear today?”
His cheeks are tinged pink. “What?”
“Just felt like it.” You whisper, rolling your hips again. “It’s fun, isn’t it?”
There’s a sharp intake of breath and then he’s whispering, “Yeah. Yeah, it is.” His hand - that was firm on your waist - slides forward, helping you keep straight.
You smile to yourself, turning back to the front. He takes another breath as you keep moving on his thighs, doing your best to not attract any attention.
You place your free hand on Levi’s other thigh to steady yourself, thrusting forward. Your sex rubs against the fabric of your uniform, making you groan lowly. Bashed, you look around, but no one seems to have caught on to what you’re doing.
Biting your lip to keep your noises in check, you keep riding him, heat pooling in your lower regions. Levi is almost guiding you, his hand coming to a stop right over your sex, pressing his fingers against where you want him most. His lips touch the back of your neck, tasting the small beads of sweat that start to form on your skin.
“You’re so beautiful,” he whispers, voice low.
You suppress a moan and keep riding him as best as you can with the strange angle, rubbing as close to his hand as possible.
He opens his palm, grabbing you, and without noticing, you whimper.
Asmodeus’ head shoots up, and your eyes lock with his.
“Oh,” he says through a sly smile, teasing laugh at the tip of his tongue, “maybe you should end the meeting, Luci.”
Lucifer stills, turning to him. “What do you…” his eyes fall on you and Levi. “You have got to be kidding me.”
Levi smiles, raising his face from your neck. “I don’t really care what any of you do,” He pushes back, folding his arms behind his head. “Either leave quietly or stay and enjoy the show.”

I propose a triple crossover: little scaled salvage. zuko is at approximate "can still be worn as a scarf for cuddles" size, his horn nubs are just barely starting to come in. akhlut crew wary until they find that dragon zuko is much less fighty (if just as reckless) than human zuko. winter rolls around and theyre a lil alarmed to find out that all the firebender talk about "agni gives us life" is more literal than they thought, as their scrawny lil dragon son basically starts hibernating
Oh my gosh little dragon Zuko--
He initially tries to escape by flying but can't make it far enough, because he is smol. (Ranalok and Aake just trail him in a boat until he has to land. Aake suggests wing-breaking as a future deterrent, kid doesn't even need those in human form. Ranalok says that's the Chief's call and spends the rest of the trip back with a tired shaky noodle hiding inside his coat. Later, Human Zuko insists he was just COLD, okay, that's ALL.)
Laundry involves their water heater occasionally being IN the tub, sporadic bubbles rising from the wiggly heating coil at the bottom, how long can dragons hold their breath because Panuk and Toklo are starting to discover the relevance of that question-- (Warm baths help with molting, of COURSE he has to get his head wet too, put him back--)
Apologies after burning Bato include a clearly ceremonial handing over of his last molt. Bato is now holding the shed skin of a child and this is just one more thing he Does Not Know What To Do With, in the rather long list he's acquired since returning to the ship.
Human Zuko walks around with a dog in his arms and/or clinging ridiculously to his shoulder. Dragon Zuko rides Seal Jerky around the deck like an epic mount, scaly nose raised high, scruffy little mane blowing majestically in the wind. Human Zuko DOES NOT WANT TO TALK ABOUT THIS. (Seal Jerky is a happy pupper either way.)
On cold nights, Human Zuko steals blankets to his growing nest, and glares at anyone to dare mention it. The first time it was extra cold and he was a dragon, they thought they lost him again. Then Kustaa got into his own hammock--Wake me up if he's hypothermic when you catch him--and just kind of... paused. Dragon nephew had been waiting hours for his warm cuddles. (Toklo hereafter took to piling extra blankets on his own hammock as a dragon-lure. It has not to date been effective, because Toklo is a small inefficient radiator. Acceptable heaters include, but are not limited to: Kustaa, Hakoda, Ranalok, and Aake. Bato is too boney. Aake consistently scruffs the prince and sets him on the floor. This does not stop him waking up to a warm wiggle-snake against his back. Human Zuko insists it's Aake's fault for being so warm and huge and warm.)
Dragon Zuko is trying to teach the albatross-gulls how to land properly via demonstration. Effective communication has yet to be established. (Under the roosting birbs is also an acceptable place to take warm!naps. The crew would like to know how he squeezed through their cage mesh, do dragons not have bones?)
One of Ozai's letters includes a line about his son's skin. Hakoda originally takes this as a metaphor. This is not a metaphor. (Later, Zuko reads the letter, and does not explain to the Chief the difference between 'skin' and 'molt' that Hakoda can't be expected to know but Ozai definitely does. Little Zuko gets to the crying-hugs part of this conversation more quickly than older Zuko did.)
General Fong's letters contained occasional mentions of skin, as well. Fong has always wanted a piece of wall art to match that in the Earth King's palace, and if Ozai won't pay ransom... (NO WE ARE NOT SELLING YOU TO THE EARTH KINGDOM, says Hakoda, when he finally gets it.)
The crew was deeply unsettled to find that the Fire Lord's line were literally inhuman monsters. By the time they reach their first port, nobody had better say anything about their tiny inhuman monster, he is a BLAMELESS NOODLE.
(Aake submits to being a dragon-scarf-perch. Nobody had better say anything about that, either.)

Various Fake Dating HCs
Various situations that require fake dating from there’s a creep, to a school play,  and how it becomes real
AN/Yall know the drill. Caffeine, sugar, no sleep, binge writing session with no edits. That said if anyone catches a mistake please let me know Todoroki’s got a little away from me (def. was not 2 pages worth of google docs nope not me wrong writer) Enjoy!
Characters: Deku, Bakugou, Kaminari, Shinsou, Todoroki
Word Count: 2520
Requests Open
Warnings: Mentions harassment
Deku
Mineta wasn’t the only creep on campus and you were Class 1-E’s lucky lady as he called you thinking he was God’s gift to women
After 2 weeks of annoying you everyday after class was enough
You’d complained to Deku and Uraka about it before so he was well aware of the jerk
When he approached you at lunch you couldn’t take it anymore
The moment he left you’d plopped your forehead onto Deku’s shoulder and asked Deku to help you out offering to buy him lunch for the week in return
He wasn’t sure how he could - he knew he couldn’t intimidate the guy like Kirishima or Bakugou so he wasn’t sure what you wanted
When you explained he’d gone pink but agreed
Since then he’d held your hand, helped you study, and called you honey and sweets when the creep was in earshot
It took the jerk a while to realize you weren’t interested for some reason when he did though Deku kept up all the sweet gestures
You told him a week after the last encounter with the creep that he could stop
He’d just murmured (thinking you couldn’t here) “I don’t want to”
You’d given him a kiss on the check and realizing you’d heard he’d launched into one of his patented spiels saying of course if you weren’t interested, and he still was focused on becoming the number 1 hero, and and and
You’d wait for him to finish and look up at from the floor before giving him a smile and asking where he wanted to go on your first official date
Bakugou
It was his idea believe it or not. You both were good friends and after his internship he had several dedicates “fans” They’d gone so far as to track him down and asked him out incessantly
The first time he’d scoffed and told them to get loss with his usual tact, that is to say none
After that when they’d followed him everyday from the gates of UA he’d blown up at them, literally
Most of them were properly scared off by this or at least more reserved 1 girl just couldn’t take a hint
You and Bakugou had been sent to get snacks for movie night later and SHE was as always waiting on Bakugou
He’d groaned seeing her and whispered in you ear to play along
Snaked his arms dangerously low around your waist, pulled you close
He purposefully didn’t look at her pretending he hadn’t already seen her
When you were out of the gates he spun you around and trapped you against the wall leaning in to whisper to you thanking you for playing along he asked if he could kiss you
You grabbed his face and pulled it towards your own
When you broke apart he smirked then pretended to take notice of the girl telling her off for spying on him and his girlfriend
You walked up behind him as he yelled at the girl and glared daggers at her
She wasn’t happy about it but between both your threats she finally backed off (though she would occasionally pop up at public UA events)
You were always with the Bakusquad so it was an easy matter to plant a kiss on his check and motion you were watching her in case she felt like trying anything
Neither of you were ready for or wanted a real relationship so that was as far as it went in high school but you keep in contact and who knows what the future holds
It did become a running joke how you two were such a lovey dovey couple in between the cursing each other out and harder than necessary slugs to the shoulder
Kaminari
You two flirted like there was no tomorrow
Eventually everyone assumed you were dating bc who else flirts with every breath
One night you were running late and Kirishima had asked Denki “Where’s your girlfriend”
It took him a second bc as much as you both flirted it was never serious
You’d popped in not a minute later and Kaminari had thrown his arm around you dramatically declaring “MY BEAUTIFUL GIRLFRIEND IS HERE” for everyone to here
You looked at him quizzically and snorted
He managed to pull you away from the group and convince you it'd be a great joke to see how long you could convince the gang you were dating and how much drama you could create in your fake “relationship”
You were plotting soap opera level storylines by the end of the night
After a week of scheming and late night writing session you started your personal drama with a dramatic monologue to the girls before class on how Kaminari had forgotten your so important 1 week-aversy
-They’d consoled you and told you guys care about stuff but if you did you should talk to Kaminari
By lunch everyone had heard and Bakugou had a betting pool on how long the happy couple would last - Kaminari tried to join but was banned
Week 3 had the suspected cheating scandal - that had earned you a lecture from Kirishima on how it wasn’t manly to cheat and you assuring him nothing had actually happened
By week 5 the two of you had a regular date scheming night
During week 6 when Kirishima was “buzzed” after overusing his quirk he confessed to loving your (nonexistent) identical twin who conveniently went to another school and you had never spoken of bc she had stolen you last boyfriend
Towards the end of the term during date night Denki dropped to one knee proposing a proposal story line you’d burst out laughing when he grabbed a slap bracelet (He’d gotten from goodness knows where) and slapped it onto your wrist
At least take me on a real date first you’d joked - then frozen hoping he hadn’t heard
He had. He took the slap bracelet off, still on one knee and said (Y/N) will you take this slap bracelet and go out with me for realizes I mean
You’d ceremoniously take the slap bracelet and try to carefully put it on your wrist, treasuring it - slap bracelets can’t be gently moved though so it snapped up immediately as you said “I do”
Shinsou
It wasn’t planned by either of you
You didn’t even know people though you were dating until a picture of the two of you showed up in the schools gossip column and someone pointed it out to you at lunch
Shinsou just nodded his head and sighed saying “that makes sense”
You had no idea what he was going on about - you found out that people had been kinder to him this morning some. Guys approached him about his “game” and some girl had talked to him saying if he was with you he couldn’t be as scary as he seemed
You to were close and you knew how much it hurt him that people were scared of him bc of his quirk
You were sitting so you leaned over and gave him a side hug promising him it would be okay
That hug went down the grapevine and “confirmed” your relationship
By the time someone directly asked you about Shinsou the two of you had talked and agreed to let slide neither of you liked anyone and it was helping Shinsou so where was the harm
You didn’t go out of your way to appear as a couple but you were friendly and people were prone to misinterpretation
Shinsou certainly wasn’t a social butterfly but he certainly wasn’t seen as scary and his friend group grew
2 months into your “relationship” Shinsou had a girl confess to him she liked him
He was taken aback she hadn’t talked to him the entirety of last term and suddenly she liked him
She had been scared of him unlike you. Unlike you, something clicked for Shinsou and the rest of the week he found himself comparing other girls to you and realized he may truly be in love with you
By the time he came round to that realization you had made your own. Maybe people had thought you two were a couple bc you hung out with him more, hugged him more, smiled at him more, and liked him more and differently than your other friends. You  maybe even loved him
At lunch he was the one who reached out and touched you, lightly settling his hand on yours and asking if you wanted to be more than a rumor
Todoroki
Can we say emotional trauma
In literature class there’d been a project to perform a Kyogen as a part of their classic lit unit - you’d loved it even if you’d been graded more on the accompanying essay of the evolution of language and classism than the performance part
When you saw there was a school play you hasn’t hesitated to audition bc the kyogen performance had been so fun
You hadn’t gotten the lead role you wanted but you were more than fine playing a the female lead’s best friend who got swept off her feet by the quiet tortured poet
As soon as you saw who you’d been cast as you immediately checked who your love interest was. It was none other than Shoto Todoroki
You were really nervous the first rehearsal that focused on your sections
You knew Todoroki only by reputation, as a aloof and focused student
You had no clue what he was doing in the play so you asked. He didn’t tell you the first day instead just did a read through
The entire time the drama teacher kept saying “More Emotion” and “You’re in love so SMILE” you were pretty sure it was directed at Todoroki who was barely beyond monotone
The director requested Todoroki stay after rehearsal for extra practice. As his scene partner you stayed too
During on of these he explained during the kyogen project he’d felt different in his everyday life when he was pretending to be happy or angry compared to when he tried to show no emotion
The director had called that moment a breakthrough. You smiled at him and asked whatever made him think that showing no emotion was in any way a good idea. He didn’t answer you
You made it your mission from then on to get him to show emotion. Of course that was the director’s job on stage. You made it your mission everyday though.
You would have friends pass him notes for you in between classes, eat lunch with him, and had a bad joke of the day hoping to catch him roll his eyes rather than just stare ahead eating robotically
Eventually he started to show cracks in the armour, he would smile when you made funny faces backstage, or say he was upset which wasn’t much but baby steps
There were days he reverted to mono-emotionalism (that emotion being bored) on those days you eventually decided your best course was just to annoy him to death or even better till he said he was annoyed this came in the form of you lightly hitting you arm on his head, singing the 100 digits of pi song on loop, or running and jumping at him (he would always catch you knowing his choices were that or be bowled over)
Those days became fewer and further between as you got closer to the play. There was one particular bad day though. You’d been trying all day to get a reaction, good or bad, out of him with nothing working.
He was sitting on the floor during practice. You dropped beside him and leaned back till your head was in his lap and started asking “What’s up with you?”
You didn’t finish your question bc he shoved you out of his lap and stormed off
Your scenes that day weren’t great to say the least
By the end of practice you were just drained, you really were trying to help, and instead you’d hurt him and that hurt as much as him pushing you away and saying he didn’t need you
The next day you had Deku hand him a note saying you were sorry
You didn’t try to reach out to him the rest of the day, sat with your own friends at lunch, and didn’t bother him between scenes during practice
It was a week before you two spoke and that was only on the blocking of the last scene the leads ran to each other as you two cheered and hugged
Tech week was hell week for 2 reasons 1. The general tiredness and overwhelmingness that always come with tech and 2 you were practically glued to Todoroki’s hip the entire play for 3 run throughs a day and you still weren’t really speaking
Opening night you saw Todoroki pacing half an hour before curtain call. You were headed back to the dressing room to help some of the other girls with their makeup but he looked stressed.
You waved not wanting to startle him. He looked up from his pacing feet and just stared at you
“I’m not here to annoy you. You just look stressed and I wanted to say it’ll be fine and um break a leg. Anyway I’ll leave you to your pacing.” You said before starting to leave
He doesn’t move to stop you from leaving but he stares you down and starts talking, spewing all the feelings that have been building up (that he doesn’t understand) He’s nervous around you. Why is he nervous around you? He’s mad at himself for making you sad that day. You didn’t talk to him. He didn’t know what to do so he let you not talk to him. His miserable and he misses you he thinks. He tried talking to Deku but Deku just told him that he needed to talk to you about these feelings so he didn’t say anything more to Deku. He has all these feeling and doesn’t know why?
You walk towards him and ask if it’s okay to hug him
He gives the smallest nod
You wrap him in the tightest hug you possibly can and lean your head into his chest. He eventually rests his head on top of yours and awkwardly wraps his hands around your back
When you pull away he looks at you for a moment before telling you your makeup looks nice
You have to run to help the girls with their makeup you remember but make him promise to talk after the show
You two talk and by the final curtain call your on stage hug has somehow become a chaste peck on the cheek.
He pays for your post set strike theater crew Denny’s meal with Endeavour's stolen credit card and asks if it counts as a date if there are 20 other people with you

High school relationships don’t last. That’s what Luke and Julie heard all the time. They started dating halfway through Freshmen year, during Christmas to be more specific.
They live in quite a small town so it is quite normal for everyone to host different activities, one of the most popular being the Christmas Scavenger Hunt. It’s a tradition going as far as well…Julie isn’t sure how long. Everyone participates, the only rule is if you’re younger than fifteen you have to be paired with an adult.
After turning fifteen Julie is excited to finally get paired with someone around her age instead of neighbors and family members. When the mayor announced her name along with Luke Patterson she froze. She and Luke had been in the same class their whole lives but never really interacted as they were on very different sides of the social spectrum. While he hung out with the ‘cool’ kids she stuck with the ‘nerds.’ She never minded but there was always a part of her that was extremely curious of the brown haired boy.
They worked surprisingly well together, and for the first time in twenty years, two teenagers won the hunt. Right after they were given their small trophy he asked her out on a date and things sort of just proceeded from there.
Looking back, Julie doesn’t regret anything, but she does wish they had broken up before they left for college. They were so sure that they could survive the distance, that they would prove everyone wrong. The only thing they managed to accomplish was missing each other, losing their trust, and extinguishing their spark. Days consisted heated arguments over the phone and words that they couldn’t take back. It ended the same way it started, one chilly December night.
Luke stood at Julie’s doorstep with tears streaming down his face and she had to look away. Words were exchanged, hearts were broken, and all Julie could do was accept it as Luke walked away from her.
That was years ago though and Julie is completely over it. She’s now a high school music teacher and choir director.
She’s dismissing the Junior class that she had for last period when a familiar face pokes through the door.
“Mr. Mercer, to what do I owe the pleasure?” Julie turned back to her desk, knowing that Alex would follow her into the room.
“Well Miss Molina, as it is tradition, Willie and I are inviting you to Christmas at our house and as it is tradition you will say,” Alex pauses and gestures a hand toward her, causing Julie to laugh lightly and roll her eyes.
“That you don’t have to. However, I do have plans this Christmas,” Julie says as she starts collecting the papers on her desk. Alex gapes at her, at a loss of words and thankfully he doesn’t have to say anything because another voice breaks through the silence.
“What is this I hear? Julie actually has plans and won’t spend her Christmas moping alone in her apartment?” Willie walks in and stops next to Alex, throwing an arm over his shoulder. Alex smiles and unconsciously leans into him. Julie smiles at them and has to remind herself that she is supposed to be annoyed at them.
“Hey!” She calls out in protest. “I do not mope and yes I do have plans. My parents want me to go home this year after years of avoiding it.”
Alex nod in understanding. “Ah yes. Avoiding the high school ex. Really mature Julie.” Willie snorts but immediately covers it up with a cough when he catches Julie’s glare.
Julie reaches across her desk to slap Alex’s arm, who pouts adorably at her. “Shut up Alex. I’m not avoiding him exactly. It’s just,” she pauses and looks down at her hands, which are playing with the many bracelets tied around her wrists.
“I know Jules. I’m sorry.” Alex pulls away from Julie and pulls her into a hug. “If you get sick of being home, we’re staying here this New Year’s since Willie’s parents are out of the country. Remember our apartment is always open to you.”
“Actually I’m begging you to be here on New Years, Alex always fall asleep at ten thirty,” Willie speaks up and Alex throws whatever his hand grabs first which happens to be a pencil. Willie quickly crouches down and throws an incredulous look at his husband. Alex shrugs and Julie laughs loudly, throwing an arm around her friend’s waist and leaning into him.
. . .
Luke definitely got over it. Sure he was convinced that Julie was the love of his life and he would never find anyone as great as her but who needs love, right? He sure doesn’t, not when he has a bunch of six-year-old children crowding around him as he strums his guitar before nap time.
Luke loves his job more than life itself so it is a little bittersweet saying goodbye to them the day winter break is set to begin.
“Have a nice Christmas Mr. Patterson!” A cheery girl covered in a coat that is way too big on her called from her mother’s side.
“You too Chrissy, see you in January,” he answers before closing the door and letting out a sigh. That was the last of them. He walks back to his desk and collapses on his chair, a small sigh leaving his lips as he closes his eyes.
The sound of the door opening makes him sit up and he wonders if anyone left something behind. He relaxes once he sees it’s Reggie, who is balancing two cups of what is presumably hot chocolate in his hands as he pushes the door closed with his hip.
“And the kiddies are gone,” Reggie says, handing Luke one of the cups and sitting on the edge of the desk.
“That they are. I’m going to miss them.” Luke takes a sip and hisses when the drink burns his tongue.
Reggie chuckles and pats his knee. “You say that every year man. They’ll be back to annoy us faster than you’ll realize.”
Luke smiles, knowing he’s right. He and Reggie started working the same year and became fast friends with ‘Mr. Peters’ being the first grade teacher two doors down.
“Any plans this year Reg?”
“Nothing big. My sister’s coming over in a few days and will stay the rest of the break.” Reggie takes a sip of his drink and smiles a little.
“That’s great. I know how much you miss her.”
“How about you?” Reggie asks, wanting the attention off of him for a while. “What are doing this Christmas? Wallowing in self pity and loneliness like you do every year?”
“Ha ha. If you must know, I’m going home. My mom’s been bothering me about it ever since I graduated but I always found an excuse not to. This year however, she said that if I didn’t visit her for Christmas she would come here and drag me by the ear so…I figured it was best to comply.”
Reggie snorts. “Bad memories back home?” He asks, wondering why Luke always refused to go home for the holidays.
Luke shrugs. “Something like that.” If you count getting dumped on Christmas Eve as bad, then definitely.
They sit in silence a few seconds, neither knowing what else to say and eventually they bid each other goodbye. Luke packs up his stuff and shoves everything into his back pack, looking around the room one last time before turning the light off and locking the door.
. . .
“Okay now next up is Luke Patterson and Julie Molina.”
It really wasn’t supposed to happen like this. Luke and Julie haven’t seen each other in over eight years and the first time they do should not be this way.
Julie thought it would be fun to participate in the scavenger hunt again this year. Her parents encouraged her to do so, telling her she couldn’t let a past relationship ruin one of her favorite holiday traditions.
Luke was forced into it by his parents. They reminded him that Christmas was not complete without the scavenger hunt and that he needed to participate.
They both regretted being such good son and daughter and listening to their parents.
It sort of felt like time was frozen. They both knew there was no backing out, rules were rules. You keep your partner, no switches.
Julie makes her way to the stage and once she starts going up the steps she looks up. She meets Luke’s eyes from across the stage and she resists the urge to run away. They meet at the podium and avoid looking at each other the whole time. The host gives them the list of items they need to find and a knowing smile.
They stand next to each other awkwardly until the end of the pairing ceremony and stay frozen for a few seconds even after the host yelled, “GO!”
Julie clears her throat. “Sooo-”
“We don’t have to do this,” Luke interjects. “Really we can just pretend we did.”
“It’s tradition,” Julie says, surprising even herself. “We don’t break tradition. We’re both adults come on hand me that thing and let’s get going.”
Luke stares at her, completely flabbergasted, as she takes the paper from his hands and starts scanning the list. He quickly snaps out of it and begins to read over her shoulder, slightly breathing down her neck. Julie shivers unconsciously and tries to ignore him as best as she can.
“Okay we can get the Christmas decorations at my place, we have extras in the garage. The gingerbread cookie house ingredients at the convenience store,” Julie keeps listing off where they should get each item and Luke makes a mental note of everything, listening intently to her. He never realized how much he missed the sound of her voice.
Once Julie’s done speaking she is slightly out of breath and her eyes are unfocused from staring at the paper for so long. When she starts to walk in the general direction of her house, she stumbles and is fully prepared to hit the floor. She squeezes her eyes shut and awaits the impact but it never comes. Luke is gripping her elbow tightly, but not enough to hurt, and his other arm is snaked around her waist. Julie opens her eyes and looks up at him, her breath hitching once she meets his gaze. They are frozen for a second, neither knowing how to react, being this close feeling both foreign and like coming home.
Luke clears his throat, a blush covering his cold cheeks as he takes a step back and away from her. Julie snaps back into motion almost immediately, speed walking the familiar path to her childhood home. Luke follows a step behind her, keeping his distance in an attempt to ease the tension he had created. Once they reach the house Julie turns back to Luke with a determined look in her eyes.
“Okay I’m pretty sure I have some paper snowflakes in a box up in my room. You go to the garage and get the Christmas lights and the old reindeer with the broken leg alright? You know where they are.” Julie immediately turns back around and starts jogging up the stairs and Luke is sure that if she were slightly taller she would be taking two at a time.
With a small shake of his head, Luke starts navigating around the house, his feet recognizing the correct way to the garage door before he even has time to think about it. He swiftly grabs the small step ladder leaning against the wall by the door as he makes his way to the shelving unit containing the left over decorations. Climbing up to the second step he reaches up and grabs two small boxes of lights, one multi-colored and one plain white, and the box containing the broken reindeer. He steps down and opens the box, a slight pain pulling at his heartstrings when he looks at the dust covered fictional animal with a bright red nose that no longer lights up.
. . .
“Luke just pass me the ball already!” Julie tries to sound annoyed but the laughter bubbling up in the back of her throat is spilling out into her words.
“Jules it’s not really that hard, just try to take the ball away from me,” Luke teases, a wide grin spread across his face, his foot resting above the soccer ball.
“I’m going to kick you in the shin, that’s what I’m going to do,” his girlfriend threatens, a playful glare sent his way.
Luke raises his arms in defense. “Hey, you’re the one that wants to try out for soccer. Just come here.” Julie reluctantly walks up to him and he pulls her into a hug, pressing a kiss to the top or her head. Julie uses this to her advantage and kicks the ball hard from under his foot. She whoops in triumph but is inevitably silenced by the loud crash of something breaking.
Both their heads turn to the direction of the sound, groaning when they see the exact decoration they broke. It was Mr. Molina’s favorite, he had bought it when he was in his early twenties and insisted to put out each year even though it was old and fragile and no longer seemed very ’spirity.’
“What was that?” Was called from inside the house.
Julie and Luke turn to each other and yell in perfect sync, “Run!”
. . .
Luke is snapped out of his memory by Julie’s voice calling from further inside the house.
“Did you find them?”
He clears his throat and blinks the tears he hadn’t even noticed were building behind his eyes away. “Yeah, coming.” He picks everything up and meets Julie in the hallway. She’s holding a ziplox bag filled with paper snowflakes and another filled with different colored tinsel.
Luke follows her out of the house and to where Julie’s car is parked in front of the street and he assumes that, that is where they will be storing their items.
Julie does not know what she was thinking when she agreed to do this. Just being in Luke’s presence brings back memories that she would rather forget. She walks faster than him, hoping that the distance serves as a sort of buffer from his intense gaze.
After stuffing all of the items in the car she takes out the list from her pocket. They’re missing a good amount of items, most of which they can find at their local convenience store so she decides that will be their next location.
She tells Luke as such and doesn’t bother to see if he’s following before she starts speed walking away from her house. Julie’s having trouble wrapping her head around being home. It’s been years since she’s been here, yet everything feels the same. She knows these streets like the back of her hand and she’s sure that she could go walk with her eyes closed. She’s doing the same silly activity with the same person she actually remembers doing it with. She feels like she’s in high school again and she’s not sure what to make of it.
Lost in her thoughts, Julie doesn’t realize that they have arrived until Luke places a hand on her shoulder to stop her. She looks up over her shoulder to meet his eyes and just like in high school, she is absolutely captivated by them. Always a different color, Luke’s eyes always made her want to kiss him and she’s about to do so but the sound of a cart crashing against the store wall pulls her back to reality.
Julie pulls away from him quickly with a shake of her head. Luke pushes his hands into his pockets and holds open the door for Julie, who mumbles out a thanks.
With the thoughts of the scavenger hunt back in her mind, Julie shoos Luke off to find the ginger bread cookie box and three Santa hats each with a different design/color as she goes to find the blue candy canes and a gift bag with Santa and two elves on it. Once they have gathered their assigned items, they meet in the cake isle where they will try to find the dreaded peppermint frosting.
Always on the list, this particular cylinder of frosting is always out of stock by the time they get there, only managing to get it once before which was the first time they were paired together.
Their eyes scan the shelves in a haste, scared that another team will show up any second. When they’re about to give up, Julie sees it. Far up in the tallest shelf is the last container. She shoves everything in her arms into Luke’s.
Refusing to accept Luke’s help, Julie climbs up the shelves, her feet struggling to find stability as her arm reaches up. A small smile pulls at her lips as she is finally able to touch the container of peppermint frosting.
And in that moment, Luke remembers why he fell in love with her. As he sees the determination in her eyes, loose strands of hair falling out of her ponytail and framing her face, arm stretched as far as it will go and fingers tapping the plastic cylinder of holiday sweetness in an attempt to get it within grasping distance, and a small grunt leaving her lips, he falls in love all over again.
If he’s being honest with himself, he never stopped loving her. Some nights, right before he went to sleep, he could picture her smiling up at him after he said some stupid joke. He could hear her laugh after he hit the ground during roller skating. He could see her walking down the stairs in her prom dress, hair and makeup done to perfection, when Luke thought she could never look more beautiful.
But some nights, those he struggled to fall asleep, restlessness filling his whole being trying to escape, he saw the tears streaming down her face as she looked down at her shoes to avoid eye contact. He could hear the sobs leave her lips and the way her voice sounded horse after a screaming match over the phone. He could see her standing by her door as he looks over his shoulder before walking away away from her one last time.
He never stopped loving her and, as a result, his heart never healed. And he will be damned if he has to walk away from her again.
Julie jumps down, a big smile on her face that Luke can’t help but return.
They run back to Julie’s car a few blocks away, laughter escaping them from deep in their chests like giddy school children on the first snow day of the year. They throw everything in and Julie expects the atmosphere to change back to their awkward exchanges, as it had all night. But it didn’t.
Luke throws an arm around her shoulders and she leans into the embrace, fitting into his arm like a lost piece of a puzzle. She allows herself to feel this comfort, this unadulterated happiness for at least a few seconds.
“What’s next?” Luke’s voice is a whisper, and if Julie hadn’t been so close his question would have been lost with the wind.
“Umm,” Julie has to pull away in order to retrieve the list form her pocket and she does so reluctantly. “Two oddly shaped pinecones, five tree branches, and a picture of our names spelled out in snow.”
Luke nods and gestures in the general direction of the park. “Let’s go.” He holds out his hand and Julie takes it with no hesitation. Their fingers intertwine and Julie swears she feels a shock go up her arm and straight to her heart.
“Do you still play music?” Julie asks, not wanting to walk in awkward silence anymore.
“Yeah, I mean I play the guitar and sing to my kindergarten class everyday and I still write sometimes. Mostly though I’m just focused on teaching.” He smiles at the thought because even though he had dreams of being a rock star, he really cannot imagine himself as anything other than a teacher. “What about you?”
“Well I’m the music teacher at a high school as well as the choir director so yeah. I basically live music.” Julie looks up at Luke to see him already looking down at her. She knows what he’s thinking, she always does, it’s the same thing she wants to tell him. I’m so glad that you’re still playing, because music has always been their happiness. She sends him a smile, a way to tell him I know and he squeezes her hand in return.
They don’t let go of each other even as they arrive to the snow covered park. They do let go however when they go in their search for pinecones, Luke saying he’ll get the branches as well.
Julie looks up after picking up a pinecone she categorizes as ‘odd’ to see Luke with his arms raised, breaking a branch from a tree and her heart speeds up.
. . .
It’s summer and Luke thought it would be the best idea to drive them up to the Orchard a few hours away.
When Julie told him that she had never been apple picking, he proclaimed it as the greatest tragedy to ever exist. Julie had rolled her eyes but readily agreed to his suggestion.
The long car ride is spent jamming out to Luke’s “greatest road trip playlist to ever grace this earth” and when they arrive Julie cannot suppress the smile that fills her face at Luke’s excitement.
“Come on Molina, I’m going to show you how it’s done.” With a basket in hand, Luke reaches up and pulls out the first apple of their trip. Julie follows after him, laughter bubbling up in her throat as she raises her arm high above her head.
Unable to reach her desired apple, she turns to Luke with a pout gracing her lips. Luke shakes his head and snakes his bare arms around her waist. Lifting her swiftly off the ground, he is able to help Julie pulls the apple out. He gently starts to lower her, stopping when they are face to face and Julie’s feet are dangling a few inches above the ground.
“What-“ Luke cuts her off and closes the short distance between them, smiling against his girlfriend’s lips. Julie pulls away with a giggle, wiggling until her feet hit the ground. She pulls Luke to another, smaller, tree where she hopes to actually be able to reach by herself.
. . .
A snowball to the face brings her back to reality. Her head snaps up and she is met with Luke bent over in laughter. Julie drops the pinecone in her hands and starts to maneuver her very own snow ball. Positioning her arm back, she throws with as much force as her body can muster and a proud yell escapes her lips when it hits Luke straight in the face.
“Oh it’s on Molina!” Luke yells before crouching down and piling snow up in his hands.
“Bring it Patterson!” Julie follows his lead, and that is how they find themselves, scavenger hunt forgotten. Just two young adults in love, finally finding their way back to each other.
They throw large amounts of snow at each other, by the end not even shaped into balls. Laughter fills the air and for the first time in a long time, it feels like Christmas. They collapse next each other on the snow, out of breath and with smiles on their faces.
They both turn to look at each other and time stops. It’s just the two of the them, forever in this moment, each trying to tell the other how they feel.
“Jules-“ Luke is cut off.
The bell. The hunt is over. Someone else won. This isn’t their happily ever after. They didn’t win.
Julie scrambles up, dusting off her jeans with her gloved hands. She hears Luke call out her name again, but she ignores him, her thoughts to keep walking louder than her heart telling her to turn around.
“Julie!” Luke is in front of her now, his hands are on her shoulders, halting her movements. She looks up at him and immediately wishes she didn’t. His eyes are pleading for her to give him a chance and Julie has always been a sucker for his eyes.
“What?” She hopes that her harsh tone is enough to defer him, but Luke is anything if not stubborn.
“Please Julie I-“ Luke realizes that he has no idea what he wants to say, he just knows what he feels and he has never been good at expressing his feelings. Not unless he has a guitar in his hands and his journal in front of him.
Julie is looking at him expectantly and Luke does the only thing he can think to do at the moment. He kisses her. He kisses her like it’s both the first and last time. He kisses her like he has wanted to do all day long. He conveys everything he’s feeling, every ounce of exasperation, frustration, happiness, sadness, and love. He puts all the love he feels for her into the kiss and hopes it’s enough.
Julie is shocked at first but quickly melts into him. Her minds is yelling at her to stop, but for once she deicides to listen to her heart, who is telling her that she meant to do nothing more than kiss Luke at this very moment. She is overcome with emotion at the feeling of his lips pressed against hers, that just yesterday were only a distant memory.
They inevitably break the kiss and Luke is scared to open his eyes, scared that this is all fake, and when he opens them he’ll be back in his classroom, about to dismiss his students.
Julie opens her eyes first and places her hands on Luke’s cheeks, prompting him to open his.
“Luke we can’t,” Julie whispers, no matter how much it hurts her to speak those words.
“Why?” Luke’s heart breaks but he refuses to let her go. Not again, not ever. “Julie if there is one thing I am sure of in this world is that I am meant to be with you.”
“But we live completely different lives now! You can’t just expect me to drop everything I have worked for,” Julie exclaims, completely exasperated.
“Then I’ll move,” Luke reasons.
Julie shakes her head. “No I can’t ask that of you.”
Luke takes her hands, which have fallen to her sides. He kisses the inside of each wrist and Julie releases a content hum. “You’re not asking anything Jules. I don’t care where I am. Anywhere not with you will never be home.”
Julie doesn’t know when she started crying and only realizes it when Luke reaches froward to wipe away her tears. “I-“
“Stop thinking about the technicalities for just one second. Do you want to be with me?” Luke is more scared of the answer than he should be. Everything is riding on her response to his question.
Julies breathes in deep through her nose and releases it through her mouth, the cold weather making her able to see her breath form before her. “More than anything.”
Luke grins and Julie can’t help but grin back at him. Standing on her tiptoes, Julie pulls Luke’s face to hers, relishing in the feeling of his lips that she will never have to worry about forgetting again.
“I love you,” Julie mumbles against his lips, not wanting to wait for him to pull away completely.
With a grin, Luke replies, “I love you too.”

Chapter 2: Envy and Guilt
“I’m sorry, but I’m what?”  Natasha asked, and all at once, it hit me exactly what Wanda and Natasha being pregnant meant, and I felt my heart sink.
Wanda wouldn’t be so bad.  She’d worry about her powers, but she had always liked them, and I knew that one day she’d want to carry her own.  She loved being a mother.  She was a mother right down to her core, and while this was an accident, she would never think it was anything but a happy one.
Natasha was a whole other story.  The Red Room had messed with Natasha’s reproductive system.  She could get pregnant naturally; it was just improbable.  However, she could never carry a baby to term.  I could see the faint thread starting to form with the embryo growing inside her, letting me know what this little pseudo-life form would one day be part of our family.  I felt like that must mean something.  Those threads didn’t connect to everyone.  But if I was wrong, there was going to be a day in the next few months where we were all left grieving if there was no way to counteract what they’d done to her.
There was also the dumbfounded look of shock on everyone’s face.  I’d hoped and believed that we were in a different place now.  We had children.  We were parents.  We were good at it.  Having more children would be an exciting thing, and they all looked panicked.  I had visions of this playing out just like it did last time - everyone running and leaving Natasha to just deal with this alone.
I also had this selfish melancholy coming from this place of loss.  Tony had just asked if I’d have his baby, and now I wasn’t going to get that.  I couldn’t get pregnant now that we were expecting other babies.  I had let myself get excited about going through a pregnancy where everyone was there and onboard and taking care of me, and just like that, it was taken away.
“You and Wanda are both expecting,” Thor repeated.  “I’m sorry, did I ruin the surprise again?”
Clint got up and moved to Natasha’s side, wrapping his arms around her protectively.
“Thor?”  Steve asked gently.  “Was this you again?  I mean… did your powers slip?”
Thor shook his head.  “I swear, after the last time, I have been extra careful holding them at bay.  I had assumed you must have planned for this to happen.”
Wanda shook her head quickly and ran her hands over her stomach.  “I was taking the pill.”
“And we’ve all been using the injection,” Bruce added.  “Which with Natasha’s…”  he trailed off and furrowed his brow.  “...condition.  Should have meant no accidents.”
“I’m sorry,” Thor said.  “I didn’t mean to be the bearer of bad news.  I truly thought this was planned.”
“Maybe… maybe there was something about the bonding?”  Sam suggested.  “There were a lot of strange things that happened.  Perhaps there was some magic involving conceiving heirs?”
“Then why aren’t I pregnant too?” I asked in a small voice.
Clint took a seat and pulled Natasha down in his lap as Tony moved beside me and wrapped his arm around me.
“I don’t know,”  Thor said.  “Truly.  I can perhaps work out when it happened and who are the fathers?  If you’ll allow it?”
“Yes,” Natasha said quickly.  “Do that.  Because… because I can’t…  I can’t lose …”
Clint pulled her close, and Natasha melted into him, squeezing her eyes shut like she was trying really hard not to cry.  It broke my heart to see her so fragile.
“I’d like to know too.  Steve, are you alright with knowing who the biological parents are?”  Wanda asked.
Steve nodded.  “With Elise, I was worried it might create friction knowing.  We know now that’s not the case.  If knowing helps get to the bottom of this, then we should know.”
Thor put the kids down on the ground and approached Natasha first.  He knelt on the ground in front of her, putting his head on her stomach and his hand on her side.  There was a slight crackle of light, different to his lightning power but similar.  “It is new,” Thor said in a low rumble.  “Barely the size of a seed.  A month?” He paused and closed his eyes, tilting his head to the side.  “I believe this child was conceived after the bonding ceremony.  The father is Barnes.”
“Me?”  Bucky said softly.  “Really?”
“I’m sorry, James,” Natasha said quietly.  “I didn’t mean…”
Bucky moved quickly to her side and held up his hand like he was going to touch her before dropping his hands again.  “Don’t be sorry, Tasha.  I know we have things to worry about, but I’m here.  So we have a little super-soldier.  We already have a god.  We can handle it.”
Just then, I felt something that I hadn’t felt in a long, long time.  I was jealous.  Natasha was going to get everything I hadn’t, and even if she did end up losing this baby, everyone was going to be here for her.  They were going to dote on her and reassure her and let her know how much they loved her, and despite the fact it was over four years ago since I had gone through my pregnancy, the trauma of it reared its head like an angry snake and bit me.  I felt guilty for it too.  Natasha had been one of three people who had been with me from the very start, and she deserved to have everyone there for her.  I just wanted to have had that too.
As Clint, Natasha, and Bucky sat cuddling on the couch, Thor moved to Wanda and crouched in front of her.  He put his forehead against her stomach and hand on her side, and that soft glow happened again.  “Yes.  At the same time.  After the bonding,” he said.
“So, it was something to do with that?”  Sam asked.
Thor pulled back and looked up at the sky.  “Heimdall, I require the assistance of my brother.”
“Maybe if it was Asgardian magic, you don’t have anything to worry about, Nat?”  Clint suggested, sounding a little hopeful.
“If it was Asgardian magic, why is Elise not pregnant?  She was the one that had sex with Thor,” Natasha asked, almost accusatorily.
“Well,” Bruce reasoned.  “You weren’t on birth control, and Wanda’s was hormonal only.  Elise has an IUD in.  Perhaps she did have an egg fertilized, and it just was unable to implant because of the obstruction.”
The theory added to that upset, guilty, jealous feeling I had.  The thought that I could be where Wanda and Natasha were now, getting the attention and love while expecting, just how Tony wanted, but instead, I was sitting on the outside looking in while the trauma of my past kept bubbling up, made me angry at myself.
“I can’t… I can’t go through another miscarriage,” Natasha said.  “It’ll kill me.”
“We’re all here, Tasha,” Bucky said.  “Last time, you were practically alone.  Now you have all of us.”
Loki shimmered into the room and looked around in distaste; his eyes lit up when he saw the twins, and they ran at him, going straight through the hologram of his body.  He crouched down, chuckling softly. “I’m sorry, my darlings,” he said.  “I’m not really here.  Just a projection.”
“Uncew Woki,” Pietro pouted.  “I wanna hug you.”
“I know,” he soothed.  “I want to hug you both very badly, but I’m needed on Asgard for now.  I promise I’ll visit properly as soon as I can.”
Pietro pouted and folded his arms over his chest, and Loki looked over at Thor.  “You requested my assistance, brother?”
“I was hoping if you could find out whether there was anything to do with the bonding that had to do with … fertility.  Or conceiving an heir,” Thor explained.
Loki turned and looked at me with his eyebrow raised.  “Another accident, Elise?”
“Not me,” I said, and gestured to Wanda and Natasha.
“Well, well, well,” Loki jeered.  “Even more children.  How exciting.  I will see what I can find.”  He crouched back down and looked at the twins.  “New brothers or sisters for you.  Aren’t you lucky?”
“Weely?”  Riley asked.
“Oh, yes.  You’ll be sure to be very kind to them, won’t you?”  Loki said.  “Even if they stab you.”
Pietro’s eyes went large, and Riley started giggling.  “We wiwl,” she said nodding.
“Then I shall see you two soon, my lovelies,” he said and gave them a wave before turning and promptly vanishing.
While they had been talking, I had noticed that while the threads to Natasha split into two, there now seemed to be three connecting me to Wanda.  “Thor?”  I said, quietly.
Thor looked over at me with concern etched on his features.  “Yes, my queen?”
“Is Wanda having twins?”  I asked.
He smiled and ran a large hand over Wand’s tiny waist.  “Oh, yes,” he said.  “Identical twins.”
Wanda blinked at us both.  “I’m having twins?”  She asked.  “Really?”
He smiled and nodded.  “Oh, yes.  Three new lives will be joining us.  It’s good news, isn’t it?”
There was almost a ripple through the room while people decided if they were allowed to be excited or not.  I could feel the mixed emotions.  Fear was there.  I didn’t know whether it was because of being worried about Natasha or just the idea of more kids.  Mostly though, they were excited.
“You never said who was the biological dad with Wanda,” Sam said, sounding a little hopeful.
Thor grinned and patted Sam’s thigh.  “Why, it is you, my bird.”
Sam wrapped his arms around Wanda and peppered kisses on her face.  “You hear that?”  He asked as Wanda started giggling.
“Wow,” Steve said, shaking his head.  “I guess we have some things we need to organize.”
Tony brought up a screen on the coffee table and started typing up a message.  “I’ll call in Doctor Schroeder again.  She’s an expert on the genetics stuff.  Maybe if you do still need help, she can do some kind of gene therapy, Red.  We’ll make sure it all goes okay.  And the new place has more rooms for kids.  I … well we… I had wanted… hoped…”
Steve smiled and rubbed Tony’s shoulder.  “I know what you mean,” he said.  “It’ll be nice having a few more of them around.”
It started to feel like I couldn’t breathe.  The jealousy I was feeling was starting to get oppressive.  The stronger that feeling of envy over not being able to get that from these people who were all so excited right now, the guiltier I felt because Natasha and Wanda had been there for me the whole time when I was pregnant. They deserved to have everyone be there for them.  I started feeling sick to my stomach and hating myself for these thoughts I  was having.
Wanda looked at me and tilted her head, and I knew she had seen it all, which only made it worse.
“Elly, sweetie. Come here,” she said gently.
I shook my head and got up.  “I just… I just need to use the bathroom. I’ll come back and snuggle with you both in a minute, okay?” I said, trying to make myself seem extra cheery.
I walked out of the room, trying not to rush, and as soon as I was in the hall, I ran to the bathroom, closing the door behind me and sinking to the floor sobbing.
A moment later, there was a gentle knock on the door.  “El, sweetheart.  Let me in,” Steve said quietly.
I got up slowly and opened the door, and he stepped inside.  “I just - I didn’t want Nat to feel worse,” I said, the tears streaming down my face.
He pulled me into a hug and held me against his chest. “It’s okay, honey.  You’re allowed to feel your feelings.”
“I want more kids.  I do.  And I’m happy.  I can see the threads to those babies, and I just… I think it’s going to be fine, Steve.  And they deserve that.  Nat deserves that,” I sobbed, burying my face in his chest.
“But you wanted that too,” he said softly.  “I know, sweetheart.  And if I could go back in time and do it all differently, I would.  You did nothing to deserve how we treated you back then.”
I started crying harder, and I clung to him.  “I thought I was over it.  I thought I’d moved past it.  We were happy.  But Bucky just moved to Natasha.  He was so happy.  And… he couldn’t even… look at me…”
“I know.  I know,” he soothed.  “I don’t know if it’s any consolation, but he wouldn’t have been able to do that if it wasn’t for the fact we’d already been through this.  And El, as strong as Nat is, if she were the one that got pregnant first, it probably would have killed her.  She couldn’t do it alone.  Not with everything else.”
“I know.  And that’s why I feel so bad right now,” I sobbed.  “And today… Tony asked me if I’d have another.”
He pulled back and looked down at me, cradling my jaw. “Oh, honey, maybe you still can?”
“No,” I said, shaking my head.  “I can’t take this from them.  And there’s three coming.  I can’t… I can’t.”
He pressed a kiss to my forehead and pulled me back into a hug.  “It’s okay.  It’ll be okay.  You feel as sad as you need to.  We’ll be here for you with that too.  No one thinks you don’t want those babies.”
I relaxed against him and let myself cry myself out.  I knew I’d have to go back in there again, but at least I knew that I wasn’t alone when I did.

Secret Summer  - part III
George Weasley x reader
Words: 2000+
A/N: there is a part three!!?? Who would’ve thought... i’m gonna be honest with ya, it’s not the best, but I just love writing for George!
part one, part two
----------------------------------------------------------
‘Five more minutes, babe,’ George grumbled as you tried to drag him out of his bed.
‘George, my parents are gonna be here in an hour and I don't want my last hour with you be one where we just lie in bed,’ you pouted kissing your boyfriend on his forehead.
‘You didn't seem to have a problem with lying in bed with me last night,’ George muttered as he put his arms around you and pulled you on top of him.
A giggle escaped your mouth when George started to kiss every spot on your face. You tried to free yourself but he was too strong. Sighing you gave up and dropped your head on his chest.
‘I'm gonna miss you,’ you said into his shirt. It smelled like him; vanilla and raspberry together with that slight smell of gunpowder that he always carried along, whether he had just exploded anything or not.
‘It's only three days!’ George laughed.
You climbed off him and started to get dressed. Taking extra time in your underwear to look for your clothes, you felt George's burning eyes on your back.
‘Yes, I know,’ you said, pulling your shirt over your head. ‘But how will I fall asleep if I don't have you near?’
‘Here,’ George mumbled and he threw his shirt at you.
You caught it with a smile and placed the shirt on the top of your already packed suitcase.
‘Now I am not wearing a shirt, will you please come back to bed?’ whined George, patting on the empty space besides him.
You hesitated; Molly had prepared breakfast and you wanted to say goodbye to everyone, but the cute look on your boyfriend's face made you crawl back under the sheets with him. George immediately wrapped his hands around your waist and pulled you close to him. One hand rested on your side while the other slid to the lowest of your back. You started to trace the lines of George's face with your left index finger.
‘I'm gonna miss you too,’ George whispered in the silence.
‘You want my shirt too?’ you teased.
‘If that means you'll take it off,’ George grinned, already reaching for the hem of your shirt.
‘You are unbelievable!’ you said and sat up straight.
George whimpered as you left the bed and searched for your shorts. Putting them on you looked at George. He was lying in the bed, watching you. The wind from the window played with his hair and the sun lit up his hazel eyes and his freckles. You loved his freckles. The little, brown starry sky on his blushed cheeks.
‘Stop looking at me like that.’
‘Like what?’ you asked taking your gaze off his eyes.
‘You know what I mean.’
‘I don't,’ you said softly as you walked closer to George.
He was now sitting on the edge of the bed, both legs on the ground, in nothing but his dark blue boxers. You stood between his legs and looked down at him. Ever since Hermione had told you how George looked at you, you saw it too. Those eyes filled with love and desire. They made you melt. You were so lucky.
You bent over and captured George's lips in a sweet kiss. It was your kiss goodbye; you wouldn't see George until you would leave for school. It was only three days, but it already felt like an eternity.
- -- -
‘(Y/N), we are so happy you were here,’ Mrs Weasley said as she hugged you.
‘Though things took an unexpected turn...’ Mr Weasley added to his wife.
‘Oh, Arthur, stop it! Have you seen them together? I wish you would treat me like that sometimes!’
You awkwardly looked at George, who grinned at you and shrugged. You already felt like family with the Weasleys. And apparently they felt too because Molly and Arthur had not kept a filter around you. They talked about everything and it didn't matter that you were in the room or, just like now, in between them.
After hugging Ron, Fred and Harry goodbye, you turned to Ginny and Hermione. Ginny had tears in her eyes, though she tried to pretend not to.
‘Oh, Ginny,’ you said, pulling her into your arms. ‘I will see you in three days!’
‘I know, but you're leaving now and Hermione's leaving this afternoon too. Who will I talk to now? Those boys won't listen to me. That's for sure.’
‘Don't worry. Three days will be over soon and then you'll meet with your friends and don’t have to talk to your brothers until at least Christmas,’ you comforted Ginny.
A smile broke on her face and she cleared her throat. You then turned to Hermione.
‘Thank you for... you know when,’ you whispered in her ear as you hugged her.
‘It's nothing. I'm glad it all worked out fine,’ she replied.
‘Well,’ you said, turning to your parents. ‘I guess that's it.’
You stepped to your parents and Ron cleared his throat behind you.
‘Uhh, (Y/N)? Aren't you forgetting something?’ he asked, looking at George who was standing defeated next to his brother.
‘Oh, right.’
You walked towards George but then, right in front of him turned to his parents.
‘Mr and Mrs Weasley, thank you for a wonderful stay. I really appreciate it,’ you said, unable to leave the smirk of your face.
‘All right that’s it,’ George said and with two steps he was next to you, throwing you over his shoulder.
You laughed but didn't ask George to put you down. He took you to the back of the house, leaving behind your father rather annoyed.
George put you down in the shadows and pinned you against the wall. His smirk was even bigger than yours and he moaned softly as you bit your lip.
‘I'm not letting you leave without a proper goodbye,’ George said before placing his lips on yours.
His kiss was passionate and sweet. His tongue roamed around in your mouth and his hands were on your hips, pressing you down to the wall. Your hands were in his hair and you felt every inch of his body on yours.
‘Hey lovebirds!’ Fred called, making you and George stop. ‘Your parents are waiting and your father looks mad, (Y/N)! George, you might wanna flight into the house!’
You kissed George on last time and pushed him to the backdoor.
‘I love you,’ you said.
‘I love you too.’
- -- -
The three days without George were awful. Your bed was not the same when George wasn't in it and the meals didn't taste the same as Mrs Weasley's food. Though you liked being home with your parents, you missed the busy Weasley-household. There was no one running up and down the stairs in the morning, there were no competitive game nights and the liveliness of the evenings now existed of your father watching either the news or sports.
Luckily you had your mother who you could talk to about anything. She listened and gave the exact right reactions. The first night you were home, you had told her about what had happened. She had taken you in her arms and had explained that there would be more moments in which you would fight or have different opinions.
‘But,’ she had said. ‘If you just talk with each other and listen to the other's story, you will make it through.’
The rest of the three days you had tried to catch up on sleep, which didn't work very well now George wasn't there, and had packed your stuff for Hogwarts (George's shirt on top).
Before you knew it, it was September first and you were standing on platform 9 ¾ waiting for your friends. Already having put your suitcase in the train, you were walking around the platform when two hands grabbed your waist and spun you around.
‘George!’ you exclaimed as soon as you saw who it was.
George immediately kissed you and you were afraid your ribs would break if he held you any tighter.
‘Be careful, bro. You don't wanna break her,’ someone behind you said.
You turned around and saw Fred and Lee, both a little disgusted by what was happening in front of them.
‘Hey, boys. How was your summer?’
‘Some girl visited and started making out with my brother,’ Fred said and you hit him.
George had turned red but he placed his arm around your shoulder while stepping into the train. Together with the three boys you searched for an empty compartment. You found none and while desperately looking for a solution in the corridor, Ron's head popped up from a door close.
‘Hey guys! In here!’
It was tight with seven people but if you sat on George's lap it fit.
While listening to Lee's story about a giant snake in the jungles of Thailand, you played with George's hand.
‘George?’ you asked. ‘Can I sleep with you tonight?’
‘Couldn't sleep without me, huh?’ George joked, but placed a kiss on your forehead. ‘Of course you can.’
You closed your eyes, nestled your head in George's neck and were taken back to the Burrow. How the light fell on the floor, how the wind played with the curtains, how the sheets felt against your skin. For a moment you were back in that bed, with George next to you.
- -- -
‘I am happy to welcome you all back for another year at Hogwarts!’ the Headmaster spoke.
The whole Great Hall was filled with students. The Sorting Ceremony had just finished and you were really hungry. You had slept most of the trainride and missed lunch. A growl came from your stomach as you waited for Dumbledore to finish. Though the Great Hall and Hogwarts felt like home, you were too hungry and tired to even notice the decorations that had been placed all around the hall. The excited faces of the new first-years escaped your eyes as you were trying to keep them open. The warmth of the Great Hall, the chatter and the smell of dinner made you tired.
‘Before we attack the wonderfulness of our long awaited dinner, I would like to remind you all of these words I heard during the break: brown Bertie Botts every flavour Beans are not always caramel!’
With these words Dumbledore sat down and the four tables filled with wonderful food.
You spent your dinner mostly listening to the stories of your friends, too tired to talk. The food tasted amazing and it reminded of Molly's cooking. You felt home, but missed the presence of someone particular.
After dinner, while everyone else left the Great Hall, you stayed in your seat. More and more people around you left and even the teachers walked past you. You only looked up when you felt a hand on your shoulder. It was George.
‘C’mon, babe,’ he said softly and lifted you up from your seat.
You followed George to the Gryffindor Tower through the busy hallways. People were catching up with friends they hadn’t seen during the summer and you saw a few lost first-years. George brought you to the common room, his hand still around your waist.
He led you up the stairs to his dormitory and stopped at the door. He then turned to you and lifted you bridal-style over the threshold.
‘Just like a bride,’ you grinned as George brought you over to his bed.
He helped you undress, his hands lingering on your body as he took of your skirt. But you let him; you had missed that.
You lied down in bed and watched George as he changed into his pyjamas. He stepped into the bed and closed the curtains, silencing the soft sounds from the common room.
George pulled you close to him and caressed your back. You pressed your lips on his shoulder and closed your eyes.
‘I did really miss you,’ George whispered in the dark.
‘You did?’
‘Of course I did. I couldn't sleep, I couldn't eat. My parents were glad I was going away.’
‘Awh, you're a romantic mess,’ you teased.
‘I am your romantic mess,’ George corrected you.
‘You are.’
George took his wand and turned down the lights. You snuggled up between his arms and sighed happily. George put his arms around your waist and placed your head in his neck.
‘Goodnight, babe.’
‘Goodnight, George.'

The Goddess of Life, The King of Death: Chapter 10
I LIVE!
They had been in the palace for five days, five very busy days. Altogether, they had had maybe an hour to relax together. Allegra, Claude, and Allain were busy as well, running back and forth between the underworld and the heavens, trying to make sure that everything was still running while Persephone and Felix were making last minute wedding plans.
The dress Persephone had brought with had kept her up every night, sewing by the light of enchanted lanterns. It would be exquisite, but it was taking far too long to finish. At this rate, it would be done the night before the wedding, but only just. She pricked her finger for the thirteenth time in the last hour and cursed, shoving the ichor-coated digit into her mouth. Once she was sure the ichor had stopped, she carefully inspected the pearlescent lace to ensure it wasn’t stained.
Persephone heaved a sigh and slowly stood from where she had been seated on the floor. She had been given a side room to work on the dress in, so that if Felix stopped by, he wouldn’t accidentally see the dress. It would be perfect, if she could finish it. Yawning so hard her jaw let out a satisfying crack, she stretched out her arms and made her way to her bedchambers to get some sleep. She only had a few hours till dawn, and she had another busy day ahead.
X0X0X
Dawn came far too early. It felt like she had only just closed her eyes when there was a knocking at her door.
“’Sephie?” Allegra’s voice called. “It’s time to get up, we need to discuss seating plans, and the menu, and of course the music. I know you have the first dance song picked out, but there’s a great deal left to do, and we only have two days!” Persephone let out a mighty groan as she sat up, rolling her neck and stretching her shoulders. She was desperately in need of a hot bath to sooth her sore muscles, but right now she hadn’t the time.
“Be out in ten, Allegra!” She called back, trudging over to her wardrobe. She shoved a few dresses aside before settling on a gown Felix had given her as a gift. It had dozens of intricate beads on the bodice and along the top of the sash around the waist. It was a rich shade of eggplant, with delicate cap sleeves and a small slit on each side of the A-line skirt that revealed her favorite shoes. Her and Allegra had developed a habit of visiting markets around the world to see what the humans had created now. This pair was Grecian, a set of sturdy sandals that wrapped around her calves several times, reaching her knees. They were surprisingly comfortable and made her legs look great. She checked her reflection one last time in the mirror, nodded, and headed into the hall.
“There you are!” Allegra cheered. She was wearing a lovely shade of aquamarine that made her eyes pop, and a snake arm cuff that she recognized from some Roman booth they had visited a few weeks ago.
“Sorry, I was up late working on the dress again.” Persephone sighed. “Please tell me you have – “
“Coffee from the kitchens, completely black?” Allegra giggled, holding up a massive mug. Persephone kissed her best friend on the cheek and took the bitter drink, sipping slowly. While Persephone drank her coffee darker than the deepest pit of Tartarus, Felix took his with three pumps of nectar, extra whip cream, and ambrosia sprinkles. It came from early mornings in the bakery, helping her parents before Noroo had even raised the sun. She had learned that the more bitter the coffee, the more energy it granted.
“You are the best friend I could ever ask for, Allegra!” Persephone sighed after downing half the mug. “Now, what did we have to do today? We have the dessert handled, and Felix says that the boys all have outfits planned. What else is needed?”
“Like I said, we need to finalize the menu with the chefs, make seating plans for the reception, and the music aside from the first dance. Come on, we have the same sitting room as the other day set up and ready to go.” Persephone nodded, and the two took off down the winding corridors of the palace.
X0X0X
It had been six hours, but everything was finalized. The seating plan had taken the longest; between where to sit her family so that people wouldn’t realize who she was till after the ceremony and trying to make sure that none of the Underworld family would be placed by someone who held any grudges (Claude tended to prank the wrong people). But it was all done, down to the smallest detail. The muses would be providing music for everyone, the dinner plans had been made (guests would choose between beef or fish, green beans or broccoli, side salads or soup, and there was rolls from the bakery and cake for everyone), and the seating arrangement was finally done. Persephone was sagging. Who knew planning a wedding was so complicated?
“Sephie!” Allegra called, snapping her fingers in front of her friend’s nose. Persephone startled and blinked rapidly at her friend. Allegra giggled a little, before pulling her up from the arm chair she had slumped in. “A certain someone is here to take you to lunch.” Perking up, Persephone looked over to the door to see Felix standing there, smiling at her.
“Hello, dearest.” He said.
“Hey, love.” She murmured, crossing the room to press a small kiss to his lips. He hummed and set a hand on her waist, as if to ensure himself she was real. “What’s this about lunch?”
“I may have set up a small surprise for you. Come on, it’s this way.” HE gently guided her, keeping her close to his side. She smiled, and began to run him through the plans they had made. Felix and the boys had been in charge of double checking the guest list and the RSVPs, to ensure they had enough for the number of guests attending. It had also been up to them to plan security and entertainment. She only hoped that they hadn’t gone too overboard. After a few minutes of walking in content silence, he stepped away from her and spun around, holding out a hand. Persephone didn’t recognize the area they were in; it was part of the palace she hadn’t had time to explore.
“Ready dearest?” He asked, setting one hand on the door handle. “I need you to close your eyes. Trust me?”
“Always, love.” She smiled and set her hand atop his as he flung the door open. She gasped at the sight laid out before her.
The doors lead to a massive interior garden, with a stunning white gazebo in the center. There was a small floating string quartet, playing a gentle melody, encompassed in a golden aura. Set in the middle of the gazebo was a small round table and chairs, with a simple yet delightful looking meal. It, all in all, was an exact replica of the place they had their weekly date night in the Underworld, in the small grotto she had made her first day there.
“Oh Felix!” She murmured. “This is perfect! It’s exactly what I needed. I’ve been so stressed, and this is so lovely!” He stepped up behind her, pressing his chest to her back and wrapping her in a tight hug.
“I know, dearest. I saw how hard you’ve been working, and I can’t tell you how overjoyed I am that you agreed to marry me in the first place. I know that tradition says we can’t see each other tomorrow, so I decided we needed to spend all of this afternoon together. Allegra, Claude, and Allain are handling the last minute details, so we are completely free.”
“I love you so much, My King.”
“I love you too, my king.“

“I loved you first”-an Everlark fic
This prompt was requested by @b-boop5. Thanks love!
5. “Wait a minute. Are you jealous?”
Summary: There are divorced couples. Then, there are Katniss and Peeta Mellark.
I loved you first
Johanna Mason looked around the high school field, lined with rows of plastic chairs. In front of her stood two middle-aged women, dressed in their ceremony best, looking over the crowd gathering for the graduation.
“I didn’t have a chance to look over my program, but who is the Valedictorian?” one woman asked.
“It’s the Mellark girl—Adeline,” the other woman responded. “She’s heading to Stanford this Fall, you know.”
“I’m not really familiar with her…I don’t think that she and Katie really hang out.”
“Oh—everyone knows about the Mellarks.” Johanna moved in closer, grimacing at the woman’s overwhelming floral perfume. “Adeline’s parents were practically teenagers when they had her. They stay together long enough to have Adeline’s younger brother before getting divorced.”
“So, they’re what? In their thirties?”
“About that. Katniss, her mother, barely looks like she’s hitting her thirties. She owns that cute little boutique downtown.”
“And, the Dad?”
“Oh God—Peeta Mellark. A delicious specimen of a man. He’s the CEO of Mellark Bakery; his family started it from a small, mom-and-pop bakery and he turned it into a franchise. Now, they’re all over the country.”
Johanna was suddenly blinded as two hands covered her eyes. She smelled the faint scent of sugar and watercolor paints.
“You’re messing up my makeup, Luke,” she warned.
Whirling around, Johanna beamed at a gangly blond, grinning at her.
“Aunt Johanna!” Luke wrapped his arms around her. “You came!”
“Of course.” She embraced her nephew tightly. “Where’s your mother?”
“Her and Dad are heading down,” Luke informed her. “They’re deciding which restaurant to go to for Grandma’s birthday next weekend.”
“There they are,” the gossiping woman suddenly said. “Peeta and Katniss Mellark. The perfect exes.”
“Are you sure? They looked like they’re still into each other.”
Luke and Johanna locked eyes; the young boy rolling his at the two women being not-so-discreet.
“They’ve been that way for years. Every PTA meeting or school event, they’re together and usually talking amongst themselves, his arm around her shoulders and her leaning against him, just like now—here they come!”
“Johanna!” Katniss pulled away from her ex to rush into the woman’s arms. “I’m so glad you came!”
“I wouldn’t miss AJ’s graduation for anything,” Johanna replied. “And, how is my favorite ex-cousin doing?” She looked to the man talking to her nephew. “Hey, asshole.”
Peeta grinned at her. “Hello to you too, Johanna.”
“How are you enjoying Panem so far?” Katniss asked her.
Johanna looked to the shocked women, both red with embarrassment. She gave them a wink.
“It’s been illuminating.”
++++++
“Apparently, you and Peeta, are the ‘It’ couple when it comes to divorces,” Johanna informed the two as they found their seats.
“Are we?” Katniss looked to her ex-husband with a smile. “Did you hear that, Peeta? We’re the cool divorcees.”
Peeta snorted. “Don’t these people have anything else to talk about?” He sat next to Katniss, giving Luke the aisle seat so he could take pictures of his sister walking down towards the stage. His arm snaked over to the back of Katniss’ chair. “Sometimes I forget how small it is here.”
“Well, you two are freakishly close,” Johanna pointed out. “Probably more than most married couples.”
“It’s kinda true, parents,” Luke added as he played with the lens of his camera. “My friends are always surprised when I tell them you’re divorced.”
“Why are your friends so nosy, teenager?” Peeta asked.
“Because their parents ask.” Luke turned to them. “It’s not like I mind. I don’t really remember when you were together, but if it was the opposite of this, then I’m glad you’re divorced.”
“That’s very mature of you, sweetheart,” Katniss told their son.
Peeta smiled fondly at his ex-wife. “We made some smart children.”
She returned the gesture, her eyes on the handsome man. “All from me.”
He leaned towards her ear. “I don’t doubt that.”
Katniss trembled; even after all these years, Peeta always knew how to make her come undone. They had known one another since they were children, had fallen deeply in love when they were juniors in high school, and Katniss was pregnant by graduation.
They had tried to make it work.
The birth of Adeline had brought them even closer and they loved their daughter with all their hearts. However, the extra responsibility had been a lot on the young parents who both juggled work and college part-time.
Katniss and Peeta’s parents had rallied to help the two. Their families helped take care of the adorable cherub that Adeline was while they went to school. On the weekends, Peeta was at the Mellark Bakery, learning how to manage his parents’ business. Katniss would be at their apartment, textbooks on the kitchen table and their daughter in her arms.
They both graduated with business degrees.
Katniss was pregnant with Luke during their college ceremony.
By Luke’s first birthday, Peeta and Katniss could see the cracks in their relationship. Peeta had been spending less time at home, trying to bring Mellark Bakery up the corporate chain. Katniss was unsure what she wanted to do and had little time to think about it as she raised their two children.
Also, they both had tempers.
As the children slept, they argued, going to bed angry. Sometimes, one or both would be in tears.
By the time Luke was two and Adeline six, they had agreed to a divorce.
Katniss and Peeta sat their families down and told them that they would be separating but amicably. Katniss would have the home that they had bought together, and it would be where the children would live. Peeta would move into an apartment nearby and would have them on the weekends.
Their main priorities were Adeline and Luke. They wanted their children to grow up in a loving, supportive environment.
It was hard in the beginning; they still loved one another…but something changed. Maybe they had become too different or they had just grown apart.
Whatever caused their breakup hurt like hell.
They continued to push forward; Katniss eventually decided to open her boutique, Primrose—named after her younger sister. Peeta became a silent partner, helping her purchase the space, but mostly staying out of the way as a gesture of goodwill towards his ex-wife.
Now, Katniss could say with confidence that Peeta was one of her best friends and vice-versa.
They had dinners together with the kids—sometimes without them. She would go to the Mellark Home for Thanksgiving and Peeta would attend the annual Christmas party at her parents’ house.
They went to every recital, sports event, and even spelling bee together. The kids never felt neglected—at least she hoped they didn’t—and both parents had great relationships with Adeline and Luke.
“It’s starting!” Luke called out. He put the viewer of his camera to his eye as the strains of ‘Pomp and Circumstance’ began.
The navy-clad graduates were led by Haymitch Abernathy—Senior Class advisor and teacher—who held the school banner as he walked down the aisle to cheers and camera flashes.
He was followed by the Senior Student Council, each with white stoles denoting their roles.
Then, wearing gold stoles, were the Valedictorian and Salutatorian.
Adeline beamed excitedly, her long dark waves moving with her, as she walked down the aisle. Next to her, Evan Odair smiled, his cheeks red and his eyes caught on Katniss and Peeta’s beautiful daughter.
Adeline spotted her parents, waving excitedly, and flashing a peace sign as Luke took her picture.
Katniss took a deep breath, trying to keep her tears at bay. Sometimes, she still saw the little girl who would beg her to play tea party with her every afternoon.
Now, that little girl was getting ready to take on the world—and she wouldn’t need her mother anymore.
Peeta put an arm around her, pulling her side against his.
“She’s always going to need us, Katniss,” he assured her.
Katniss turned to him. “How did you know what I was thinking?”
Peeta reached, wiping the stray tear off her cheek, and giving her a sad smile.
“Because I know us,” he told her. “We all grew up together—you, me, Luke, and Addie. And, we’re never going to stop needing each other.”
Katniss nodded and he pressed a kissed to her temple.
Next to the exes, Johanna rolled her eyes.
Brainless, the both of them.
++++++
“Now, I would like to call up our Valedictorian—” Voluminous applause rang through the crowd along with some shouts from the rowdier seniors. “—an ambitious young woman who, besides maintaining a 4.0 GPA and taking all available AP classes, is the president of our youth volunteer club, one of our most popular tutors and a peer mediator. From personal experience, it has been an honor to have someone to debate with in class—” The crowd laugh at his words. “Ladies and gentlemen, Adeline Jane Mellark.”
The crowd was riotous as Adeline stepped onto the stage. She was always popular, though she never had a particular crowd that she hung out with. She went to prom with Evan—as friends—though Katniss believed that the boy next door had always wanted more.
However, Adeline had always been a free spirit.
She admitted to Katniss that she didn’t want to be tied down to anyone since she would be leaving for school—despite the cuteness of Evan’s smile.
Adeline stepped up to the podium, beaming at the crowd.
“Good afternoon, faculty members, families, and senior class,” she began. “My name is Adeline Jane Mellark. Most of you know me as AJ or, if you’re my Dad, Addie. I am supposed to be up here trying to inspire and give you advice for what comes next. However, I don’t think I could give you any advice as I’m in the same boat as the rest of you. I don’t know what’s coming next.”
Katniss leaned forward; her eyes trained on her daughter. Peeta sat in rapt attention, his own stare on their daughter.
“I can tell you that, whenever I’m not sure what to do, I think of my parents. You see, my mom and dad had me right after they graduated high school. They had to navigate going to college along with raising a child and by the time they graduated college, my brother came along. When I think about it, we grew up together.” Adeline smiled to herself. “We learned together.”
She met Katniss’ eyes.
“My mom taught me to always focus on what I want, to never back down, to fight for what I believe in.”
Peeta reached for her hand, giving it a squeeze.
“My Dad—” She heard Peeta’s breath hitch. “—taught me that there is good in everyone; that sometimes to get back on track all you need to do is look at a sunset, and to always have hope.”
She grinned.
“Mom, Dad…I just wanted to say that I’m proud to be your daughter. That, because of you, I am not afraid of what comes next. You both taught me lessons that I’m going to carry with me my whole life—that no matter what happens, I’ll always have a place to just be me.”
Adeline looked at her classmates.
“We’re always going to have each other. So, when you’re feeling lost or scared, think back to this moment—this is our place to be us. This great moment of excitement…fear…of endings…and beginnings—life is full of them. Enjoy them. It has been an honor to be part of this graduating class and I wish you all the best of luck in whatever comes next. Thank you and congratulations!”
The crowd was up on their feet and, over the sea of people, Adeline met her parents’ identical teary gazes to blow them both a kiss.
++++++
“You must be so proud, Peeta,” the woman…Karen—he wasn’t sure what her name was—said. “Adeline is so accomplished.”
In return, Peeta gave the woman a conciliatory smile. “Katniss and I are very proud of her.”
Beside him, Finnick and Annie Odair stifled their laughter at her obvious flirting in the middle of his own daughter’s graduation reception. The couple had been friends with the Mellarks since they moved into the neighborhood.
“It’s going to be awfully lonely for you now that Adeline’s going to be moving away,” she simpered.
“Not really. Our son is just entering high school. Katniss and I are sure we’ll have our hands full.”
“Luke is definitely a spitfire,” Finnick said. “But a hell of an artist.”
“He’s going to the fine arts high school, correct?” The woman frowned. “Do you think that’s the right path? The artist route isn’t very lucrative.”
“Well, it’s a damn good thing that Peeta and I care more about our children’s happiness than the amount of money they’ll make.” Katniss joined his side and gave the woman a cool smile. “Clarissa, we’re so glad you could join us.”
“Thank you for having us.” The woman looked around the house. “You have a beautiful home.” Her eyes suddenly darted behind them. “If you’ll excuse me.”
She was gone in a second.
“Clarissa! That was her name!” Peeta snapped his fingers, turning to his ex-wife. “This whole time I thought it was Karen.”
Katniss chuckled. “Please don’t tell me you called her Karen.”
“Peeta couldn’t get a word in,” Annie explained. “The woman had her sights on becoming the new Mrs. Mellark.”
“Many have tried, all have failed,” Peeta said. “Anyway, I’m not looking.”
“Why not?” Katniss questioned. “I was just too perfect, wasn’t I?”
He flashed her a smile. “We all didn’t find a Gale Hawthorne, did we?”
Peeta tried not to cringe saying the man’s name. Katniss had been dating him casually for six months, but he could tell that the man was set on making things official.
“Where is Prince Charming, anyway?” Finnick asked, his disdain obvious. Their friend had always believed that he and Katniss would eventually reunite. According to him, they had too much fire to be just friendly exes.
“Probably somewhere polishing his crown,” Peeta replied with a short laugh.
The look on Katniss’ face quickly cut him off. She looked disappointed.
“Peeta, you’re better than that,” she admonished softly. “Excuse me.”
Katniss walked away, heading upstairs, and his heart sank seeing the slump in her shoulders.
“What the fuck was that?” Annie asked, looking between the men.
“Truthfully, I think Gale is a douche,” her husband admitted. “I don’t know what the hell Peeta was on about—” Finnick looked to the downhearted man. “Wait a minute. Are you jealous?”
Peeta glared. “Why would I be jealous?”
Finnick guffawed. “Because the man is probably pounding into your ex-wife who you’re still pining over.”
“Focus, you two!” Annie pushed Peeta forward. “You should probably talk to her.”
“I’m already on it.”
++++++
Katniss looked at herself in the bathroom mirror.
Why was she even upset about Peeta’s remark? It wasn’t like it was mean.
Truthfully, Gale was a little high on himself sometimes. He was successful, having his own real estate firm, and had taken her to some nice places.
While he didn’t make an effort to get to know Adeline or Luke, she hadn’t gone out of her way to encourage his involvement with her children either. They didn’t need another father figure.
Truthfully, Katniss kept him because he saw her as a woman—and not just a wife or mother.
There had been a point in her marriage to Peeta where they stopped seeing each other as people and started seeing one another as parents who just slept next to one another. It was hard to keep the romance alive when she always had a baby to her chest.
Their fights had been epic and an argument over which preschool Adeline would go to ended with a bout of angry sex against the doorway of their bedroom.
Then, she ended up pregnant with Luke.
One day, they looked wearily to one another and both realized it was over.
They had no fight in them left.
“Katniss?” Peeta stood at the bathroom doorway, guilt on his face. “You okay?”
Katniss turned to him, crossing her arms as she faced him. “I guess.”
“I didn’t mean it,” he told her.
“I just don’t want us to get to that point where we’re snipping at one another,” Katniss told him. She moved past him to walk into her bedroom and sat on her bed. “I hated that.”
Peeta joined her. “Me, too.” He sighed, giving her a doleful look. “I’m just not used to not being the number one man in your life.”
She knocked into his shoulder, a smile rising on her lips.
“Peeta…you know that Luke is number one.”
“I will concede to our son,” Peeta told her. “Addie is going out with her friends tonight and Luke is sleeping over at Christian’s house. They have a video game to conquer, apparently. Did you want to have dinner? Like a parents of the Valedictorian celebration? We can go to that Chinese place that we love—with the mu shu you like.”
Katniss gave him an apologetic smile.
“After the cleaning crew leaves, I’m having dinner with Gale tonight.”
Peeta nodded. “How about I stay while the crew cleans up and you two can go on your date earlier?”
She raised a brow. “You sure?”
He stood, holding out his hand. “Truce?”
Katniss took it, standing and giving him a hug, her nose pressing his shoulder. She always enjoyed his smell, that warm spiciness of his cologne. It was comforting yet it still made her heart skip a beat whenever it hit her nostrils.
“We better get downstairs,” she said into his shirt. “We have a speech to make.”
Peeta nodded, lifting her chin so he could look into her eyes. “We did it, Katniss.”
“What do you mean?”
They walked out of her bedroom and Katniss looped her arm through his as they headed down the hallway towards the stairs.
“Remember when she was first born? We were both so scared of screwing her up…but we didn’t,” he told her.
They descended the stairs, staring at one another.
“I remember. I was constantly snippy and wanting to call the doctor at every weird noise she made,” she replied. “And, you were always worried about dropping her or cursing in front of her!”
“I may have cursed once or twice. Much more around Luke—” Katniss snorted and he laughed. “Things get a little more relaxed with the second one!”
Katniss sighed. “True.” They stopped halfway down, and she turned to him. “I’m sorry if I ever took my parenting fears out on you. It probably contributed to a lot of our fights.”
Peeta shrugged. “I wasn’t there for you when you needed me. All those late nights at the office…”
“It’s all in the past now,” she interjected.
At the foot of the stairs, Adeline and Luke were talking to Evan and his parents. When she turned to look at them, their daughter hurried up the stairs with a bright smile on her face before wrapping her arms around her parents.
“Thanks, you two.” Adeline pulled away; her blue eyes glowing. “This is a great party and you did so much—”
“You deserve it,” Peeta told her tenderly.
“You’re our little girl,” Katniss said. “We always kind of knew we would be spoiling you!” Adeline giggled. “And, we are enormously proud. A bit braggy, too…”
“Aunt Johanna told me about those two women gossiping about you guys,” their daughter informed them quietly. “It makes sense, though. Their daughters are bitches.”
Peeta guffawed and Katniss raised a brow at their daughter’s words. That was thing about Adeline; she never pussyfooted. Like Katniss, she could be blunt when need be. However, she was naturally empathetic like Peeta.
“While I’d usually prefer that you didn’t curse, you’re eighteen so I can’t really stop you,” Katniss said.
“Thanks, Mom!” They made their way to the last three steps and Adeline went to a nearby server, who handed her two glasses of champagne. She walked over to them, handing them both a glass. “Good luck, you two.”
Stepping back, Adeline joined her brother and friend.
Katniss turned to Peeta, a nervous grin gracing her face. “Go on. You’re better with this than I am.”
He chuckled, leaning to kiss her cheek.
“You’re probably right.” She elbowed him, ignoring the heat rising on her face. “You’re really too easy to fluster.”
Peeta cleared his throat and Luke tapped the glass he was holding with a spoon to catch everyone’s attention.
“Thank you, Luke,” he told their son, who grinned back with a smile so much like his own. “Thank you all for attending this reception. Katniss and I would just like to say a few words about our daughter…”
++++++
“How did the graduation go?” Gale asked as he cut into his steak, his eyes focused on the slab of meat.
“It was wonderful,” Katniss replied. She reached for her fork to cut into her salmon. “I wish you could’ve come to the reception. You would’ve enjoyed it.”
“It’s not really my thing,” the man replied easily. “No one wants the boyfriend at the family party. Anyway, I already gave Adeline her graduation gift.”
Her daughter had smiled blankly as Gale handed her the two gift cards; one for Target for school supplies and the other one to get a full tank of gas for her Prius.
It wasn’t that her daughter was ungrateful; she admitted to Katniss that Gale seemed a little…cold towards her and Luke—as if he didn’t like them.
However, who wouldn’t adore Katniss’ children?
They were sweet and kind…
The man in front of her, however, looked a little overwhelmed whenever he was in their presence.
“Don’t you like your food?”
Katniss realized that she had yet to take a bite. She gave him a smile before putting a piece in her mouth.
“Delicious.” She swallowed before reaching for her wine glass. She definitely needed to discuss this issue about the children. “Listen—”
“I know what you’re going to say.” Gale placed his utensils down. “Now that Adeline is leaving for school, you’re looking into more time for us.” He gave her a tight smile. “It’s just that we’re getting into the summer and it’s our busiest time with parents trying to buy or rent places for their kids—”
“That wasn’t what I was going to talk to you about that,” she interrupted. “It’s that whenever you’re around my kids, you seem to be a little…aloof.”
Gale looked non-plussed. “I mean, they aren’t my kids. I don’t necessarily need to be obliged to care for them like I’m their father. They have one.”
“I know that and Peeta is a great one,” she explained. “But I thought we were serious in a sense where you’d want to get to know them.”
“Hmmm…maybe if we had our own child, I might have to open up to them.”
Katniss blanched—was she really dating this guy? This man who didn’t want to let her children into his life unless he saddled her with his own?
In that moment, Katniss saw a future where she would once again be changing diapers, waiting for a man who was never home.
Suddenly, she was standing up.
“You know what? I’m going to save you the trouble of having to open up to my children. Goodbye, Gale.”
She made her way toward the exit, but not before grabbing the bottle of wine she paid for from the ice bucket.
++++++
Stepping out of the taxi, Katniss looked up her home, comfort washing over her immediately.
This home was where she watched her children take their first steps…where she’d wait at the front door as they stepped off the school bus and into her arms…where Peeta had carried her over its threshold…
They had purchased the two-story colonial-style house after Luke was born with the help of their parents. Since then, they had repaid the loan tenfold and found comfort that their children had a place to go whenever they needed it.
Heading up the brick walkway, Katniss reached into her purse pulling out her key to unlock the door before stepping into the house.
Closing the door, she was surprised to smell the scent of…cookies.
Toeing off her shoes, Katniss headed towards the kitchen and was surprised to find Peeta pulling out a tray full of chocolate chip cookies—her favorite.
“What are you doing?” she asked from the open doorway.
“Thought that you and the kids would like a fresh batch whenever you got home,” her ex replied as he placed the tray on the counter. Peeta pulled the oven mitts off, tossing them beside the cookies. “You’re home early.”
“Dinner didn’t go so well,” she told him glumly. Katniss presented him with the wine bottle in her grasp. “At least I have a consolation gift—that I paid for.”
“Ouch,” Peeta replied. “Well…cookies are the perfect complement to wine.”
She nodded. “Do you remember where the bottle opener is?”
He went to the second drawer to the left of the counter, pulling out the well-loved gadget. “Always.”
++++++
“Do you remember how we used to stay up late to watch R-rated movies after the kids were asleep?” Peeta asked. “I swear there was one point where I wanted to murder The Wiggles.”
“You didn’t know?” Katniss reached to grab another cookie from the coffee table. “I put a hit on them. That’s why you never hear about them anymore.”
The soft glare of the television was the only light in the room. They had discovered an old romcom that was popular when they were teenagers and decided that it would go well with their late-night snack.
Peeta chuckled, sitting back on the couch. He had changed from his ceremony attire to a t-shirt and a pair of sweatpants that Katniss had found in her closet. She had also changed into a pair of pajamas while Peeta had set up cookies and wine in the living room.
“If anyone could murder them, it would be you,” Peeta replied. “What time is Addie getting home?”
“I told her midnight was her curfew while she lives here,” Katniss informed him. “Once she’s in college, we will have no say on when she gets home.”
“I’m dreading not knowing what she’s doing.” He turned to her. “Do you think she’s going to come home during the holidays?”
“If she doesn’t want me to go all the way to Stanford to drag her ass here, she will.” Peeta snorted at her words. “She’ll come home. It’s going to be lonely here without her though. Nobody to have mani-pedis with or talk about those stupid reality shows …”
Katniss found herself sniffing back tears. She swiped them away with the back of her hand.
“Ignore me. It’s the wine and ending the most useless relationship in history.”
Peeta waved her over to his side and she scooted in towards him, her head going to his shoulder. She tucked her feet underneath her bottom as he put an arm around her.
“Did you love him?” Peeta asked gently.
“No.” She closed her eyes, taking comfort in the warmth of him. “I’ve had my great love. I don’t need another…I just liked the feeling of someone making an effort to just be with me.”
“And, I wasn’t that way?” he replied tightly.
“Neither of us were making much effort towards the end.” Katniss looked up, seeing his eyes full of hurt. “It was no one’s fault. It just happened. I mean, we didn’t kiss each other anymore.”
“I should’ve kissed you more.” His hand reached to brush her chin and her body tingled, her lower half twisting in that familiar heat. “It was one of my favorite things to do.”
“Until it wasn’t.” Katniss swallowed harshly as she unfolded her legs. They were getting into dangerous territory. Reluctantly, she stood up. “I should clean up—”
Peeta suddenly grabbed her wrist and she stilled at the motion.
Standing, Peeta reached his arm around her waist, pulling her against him.
His other hand went to her cheek. “You’re always going to be my great love. You know that, right?”
Then, his lips were on hers.
Katniss fell easily into his kiss. She always did. Her arms circled his neck as she pressed against him, feeling her nipples tighten against the hard planes of his chest. Peeta’s hands moved down, palming at her ass and she groaned into his mouth, her tongue sweeping into his.
Peeta’s lips moved to her neck. “I forgot how good you tasted.” He sucked against the juncture and she mewled, the heat between her legs growing and her core throbbing. “Do you still taste this good everywhere else?”
“You can find out…later.”
Katniss guided him to sit on the couch as she pulled her unbuttoned her pajama top, shaking it off her quickly. Her breasts were in bare sight, nipples pebbled despite the heat in the room. Her pants were next, and she undid the drawstring before bending down to pull her bottoms down to the carpet.
Peeta stared up at her in awe. “You’re still the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen.”
Katniss smiled softly as she placed her knees on both sides of his lap before straddling him. Her lips went to his in a gentle kiss.
“Have you been with anyone else recently?” she asked against his mouth.
Peeta shook his head. “It’s been a year…and it was only once.” He looked to her. “And Gale?
“Never. He hardly came over and I have never been to his apartment,” Katniss explained. “We mostly had dinner or went to shows that his company was sponsoring.”
Peeta tutted. “Shame.” His hands went to her waist. “Who wouldn’t love to be deep inside you?”
Her hand reached under the waistband of his bottoms, finding him hard. Her hand wrapped around him, stroking smoothly to get him ready. He hissed, his eyes closing and his hips following her motions.
“Please don’t make me come all over myself,” he begged. “I don’t think I’d forgive myself if I did.”
“We wouldn’t want that—” Katniss eagerly helped him pull his pants off, her eyes going immediately to his length, standing erect and the tip of it glistening. She missed his cock—or at least her pussy did, as it immediately pulsed at the sight of him. “—I don’t think either of us is going to last.”
His hand went between her thighs, pushing the cloth between aside to plunge two fingers into her sodden core.
“Damn, you’re wet.” His eyes traveled to meet hers as he slid the digits in and out of her before putting them into his mouth. “You taste even better than I remember.”
“I forgot how I loved the way you looked at me whenever we were together,” she told him, her hands hurriedly moving the last piece of cloth. “Like I was the only woman in the world.”
“To me, you are.”
Her eyes filled and she leaned down to give him another kiss before helping him remove his shirt.
“You shouldn’t say things like that,” she admonished quietly.
Katniss looked over her ex-husband, familiarizing herself with his body once more. His chest and shoulders were broader and his abdomen firmer. However, there were other things that were the same; the scar on his shoulder from falling at the school playground and the feel of his strong thighs under her.
“Why not?” he asked her, his hand going to the nape of her neck.
He gently drew her down until their foreheads met and she looked into those blue eyes, dark with hunger. Her heart skipped at the intensity of his gaze and she remembered all over again how easy it was to fall in love with Peeta.
“Because this will be harder to forget,” she told him.
Peeta’s hand went to her hip, guiding her over him.
“I don’t want to forget.”
Then, in one motion, he was inside her.
++++++
“Katniss.”
She looked up from behind the register to find Gale standing before her.
“Hi. What are you doing here?” she asked, rounding the counter. “I haven’t heard from you in…”
“Two months,” he replied sheepishly. “Trust me, you don’t forget when a woman walks out on you at a restaurant.”
Katniss crossed her arms. “You kind of deserved it.”
“May I take you out to dinner to apologize?” Gale looked genuinely sorry for his behavior. “I miss you.”
“You don’t even know me,” she countered.
“Give me a chance—unless you’re seeing someone else.”
Her mind wandered to that night…that perfect night with Peeta.
She had forgotten how perfectly he fit inside her. Peeta had been her first and she was his. When they were younger, he had jokingly told her that her insides were perfectly molded to his cock—any other man’s would never fit exactly right.
And, it was true.
He continued to prove his theory a few more times before she insisted that he leave. It wouldn’t do any good for Adeline to see her father and mother reuniting carnally all over the living room couch.
They were still close, but they understood that it had been once and once only.
Even though the sight of him left her soaked.
Or that, occasionally, if Peeta was close enough to her, he would brush his hand against Katniss’ sending her hormones into overdrive.
She shook herself from her thoughts and looked to the man in front of her.
“There’s no one else,” she told him.
“Tonight? I’ll pick you up after closing.” Katniss nodded and Gale leaned over to kiss her cheek. “I’m looking forward to it.”
“See you then.”
Gale walked out of the store, heading towards the Mercedes parked in the front.
Katniss stretched, feeling an ache in her body. Lately, she had felt off. The stress of Adeline getting ready to leave and unexpected sex with her ex had left her feeling out of sorts.
Yesterday, she nearly tore Luke’s head off for leaving his muddy sneakers by the front door after soccer practice.
There was a beep on her phone, and she looked to find a text from Adeline: ‘Mom, you heading to a Target or a drug store after work?’
She typed back, ‘Wasn’t planning to. Do you need anything?’
‘Some Tylenol and tampons.’
‘Sure babe. I’ll see you later.’
Adeline’s cycle was very similar to her own; it came strong, leaving her sometimes unable to even move.
Katniss added soup to her list of things to grab after closing the store.
It always made them feel better during their periods—
Which she did not have, even though she and Adeline were usually in sync.
Katniss turned from the counter where a calendar featuring men with puppies was—no red circle marking the arrival of her period. She took the calendar off its hook before looking at the previous month.
No red circle either.
Fuck.
Without fail, every graduation ended with her being pregnant with Peeta’s child.
FIN(?)
Really enjoyed writing this one, it would make a great four-parter. Thoughts?
