theres a few ??? thing going on in trigun stampede that's explicitly japanese/sino-ish in culture but im entirely not sure what to make of it. 3 things.

Knives' birthname being settled as Kni/Nai,

and the Buddha Thread??? thing in ep 11 10

Knives' birthname is Kni and hm! ...無い?

this is specifically a stampede thing. nightow didnt give him this Kni name in his work, so i can only chalk this up to the stampede staff's deliberate decision. if you render it into japanese, it'd be Nai, and the immediate word i can think of is... 無い. meaning, Nothing, or Without.

it fits rather well considering stampede has officially placed an emphasis on his obsessive love towards his brother on his bio on their official site:

Vash's twin brother. Possesses a cold and merciless personality. Filled with a hatred for humans, he masterminds an organization with a plan to massacre the entire human species. With abilities beyond human understanding, he has the power to destroy entire planets. He greatly loves his only younger twin brother, Vash to an obsessive degree.

interestingly, the word used for the obsessive love here specifically is 執着 shuuchaku, which has roots/association with the word Abhinivesha. from what i understand it is a mental state, a fear of death, and a desperation to cling onto life so much one becomes ignorant and causes their own suffering. and ignorance is another big core of what makes Knives' character tick.

so i feel like this has some pointers towards Knives, or even child Kni being nothing without his younger brother. (or it could just be a simpler play on the word naive lmao)

meanwhile for Vash there's not really anything japanese that jumps out at me, but some have pointed out his name sounds like the french word Vashe, used for female cattle. extremely passive and born for consumption and theres a lot to dissect in that direction but im not going there! his name is Knife and his brother is a cattle there's catholicism may your brain go brr.

theres more to the nothingness concept in buddhism that doesnt put it squarely in a negative category but lets talk about buddhism later. next:

Knives is evidently the light Yang, and Vash is the dark Yin. ngl this daoist thing is somewhat sexist but lets brush that over 2 thousand year old aspect aside for this post. for stampede's case we can clearly see what theming is going on especially for those in the know of the original work.

Knives is hella assertive to the point of echoing fascist eugenics nonsense, and Vash has that nurturing instinct that seems to pop in whenever there's a human child or people who needs help.

interestingly the planet No Man's Land has too much fugging sun and is too hostile for human life. to survive people have to live in the shade and turn to plants for counters to the harsh, hot celestial sun. so here if Knives is being the sun, hes also being hostile to human life, and meanwhile the feminine looking plants and Vash's personality plus actions are the only thing giving these people at chance at life. (also vash has the power of Dark Matter or something)

obviously, just like JuLai's broken symbol, the balance is completely and utterly out of whack. in daoism a broken balance is thought to cause a lot of suffering. in the finale, Vash doesnt have a single speck of white on him, and Knives doesn't have a single speck of black. this means there isn't a balance and they cant come to an agreement at all.

im gonna also point out here that vash's idea of co-existence even if accepted wouldnt be a permanent solution due to the dependents having limited lifespan. so through this lens, stampede seems to be saying that neither twin's ideas are really effective long term solution, tho Knives is completely unacceptable due to obvious genocidal reasons.

Buddha Thread

studio orange whaaat are you guys cooking over there... ok so. in ep 11, Knives drops Vash into the uhhh The Hell Pool, and Vash tries to get out of it with his wire and hangs for a bit. then we get a scene like this:

Knives proceeds to cut Vash's thread and he drops into The Hell Pool. and then the metaphorical SA scene happens.

i call it Buddha Thread but this can also be known as The Spider's Thread. there exists a story of The Spider's Thread that's very Japanese-Buddhist and well known over there.

the gist of this story is that Buddha lowers a single spider thread to a sinner in the deepest hell as a lifeline to get out, bc this heavy sinner had done a singular good deed of saving a spider he was about to crush with his foot. however, the thread is broken as a result of the sinner's selfishness yelling for the other sinners below him to let go, claiming this thread was his and his alone. the sinner having climbed halfway upwards the thread after great effort plunges back into the pits of hell. buddha having watched all of this reacts with sadness, and the days in paradise carry on as per usual.

and. digest that for a second. and then refer back to Knives and The Fall and this scene that plays later, when Vash's mind wipe begins proper:

fuck. me. knives is framed as a self proclaimed god in the loudest ways on multiple levels.

while these 3 aspect i just broke down explaining do not exist at least overtly in the original trigun, i thought it would be interesting to chew on in light of the overwhelming catholicism existing in the story.

there's some themes im also picking up from the original trigun that might be rooted in either buddhsim or japanese culture such as: the undeniable truth that yearning and hunger is part of the human living experience and to deny it is to deny living. but im not sure what to make of it bc A) not explicitly framed or explored as a buddhsim/japanese idea thing and B) catholicsm obv is the overwhelming theme of the entire work

It's hard to say what kind of day it's going to be when you wake up with a song about Canada stuck in your head. Jihoon wasn't even aware he knew a song about Canada, but there it was in his head, trumpets and all as he brushed his teeth. Lots of brass, actually, which he might have dug if it wasn't layered over the pop-punk guitars, too. Who writes a song like that?

When did Jihoon listen to a song like that?

He entered the practice room singing even the French bit under his breath as he swung the door open, AC sweeping in a chill wave toward him. "Canada oh Canada, I s'il vous plait..."

"Are you singing in French?" Mingyu asks him from his seated position on the shining polished floor.

"Don't get me started," Jihoon shook his head at the cursed mental brass, trumpet tune making it hard to get a clear thought into his mind. It was really catchy, too, darn it. Let’s go to Canada, let’s leave today…

“Who’s singing in French?” Jun chimes in.

“No one,” Jihoon sighs.

“Woozi-hyung,” chimes Chan.

“Why?”

“Let’s just practice,” Jihoon sighs, shooting the maknae his best ‘not another word outta you, Dino’ look.

The sweet, sweet relief when the Canada Song faded away, no longer stuck in his head. Jihoon put on one of his chillest samples as he sat down in the studio just to clear his ears like the coffee beans in cologne stores were supposed to, sinking into the leather of his chair after the strain of both dance practice and all the Canada. As the simple beat filled his brain, he sighed, preparing to add the next layer when…

…Another even catchier song entered his head. The backing guitar was similar, but overall the electrics were more prominent. The trumpets were even more rousing, the voice singing triumphantly about this and that all in English this time. Something about singing a song, ironically. Jihoon was very confident he’d never heard that song either, and this time it was far more vivid than simply having something stuck in your head. It was playing as if through headphones with the volume turned up, like God himself was trying to blast out the sampled beat he’d wanted to work with. Fine, then.

He turned it up. The music in his head turned up, too. He fought back with his chill beat. It fought back just as hard. You asked for it…music.

Jihoon had plenty of upbeat songs to work on, too. Closing the relaxing song-in-progress, probably something that would be going to the vocal team, he opened up one of the hip hop unit’s demos, the loudest one they had, and started playing that. It needed some fine-tuning before the next album anyway. Finally the trumpets faded out of his head as he got some work done, tweaking the autotune back to keep the members’ voices at the forefront. This time, neither the brass nor the guitars returned. Ha. Victory was his.

“What song is that?”

“Was I humming?”

“Yeah,” Soongyoung nods, “it sounds like a nice song.”

“It isn’t.” Jihoon crosses his arms as the music fades into his ears. “It’s just some song about a pool party.”

His friend smiled. “Sounds like fun. New concept?”

“No, it’s not mine.”

Soonyoung’s brows furrowed as he swiveled in his chair, clunking plastic sounds accompanying the motion. “Whose is it, then?”

His head fell into his hands. “I wish I knew.”

He spent the rest of the day ready to strangle Soonyoung, who liked the pool party song enough that he kept singing it long after it was done playing through Jihoon’s head.

A song about skateboards? Ok, kind of a good idea, just maybe not one so goofy. Had a trumpeter died and seen fit to haunt one Lee Jihoon for his musical proclivity?

Something was going on. This wasn’t natural. His dancing time was suffering unless he listened to the practice song in headphones. His lyricism failed him, other instruments blurring out his careful, sentimental mixes in whirlwinds of skateboards and time bombs and foreign countries. The songs could have been worse, in fact Jihoon was getting a bit too comfortable with the catchy one about something or other in school and singing, but in his line of work no one could afford distractions. Especially distractions that literally got louder every time he tried to drown them out as if they wanted him to know they hated him.

He excused himself from practice, slumping down against the wall with his chin in one hand, the other digging in his sweats pocket for his phone, praying Google would have some answers as to what would cause this.

A shadow fell over his vision. “Hey, are you ok?”

Glancing up, he saw Jeonghan standing over him, hands wringing in concern. “I know this has been a tense week for you, but the others were saying something about music? About singing in French?”

Jihoon sighed, sliding his phone back into the warmth of his pocket. He let it all fall out, all the brassy details of his past week rushing forth. How it started with feeling a song he’d never heard stuck in his head and continued into sometimes hours-long segments of invisible headphones tuning him into unfamiliar ditties.

“I- I feel like I’m going crazy.”

Jeonghan rested a hand on his shoulder. “You’re not going crazy. Have you considered that it’s your soulmate?”

“My soulmate is a bunch of disembodied ska?”

“No,” Jeonghan suppressed a laugh, “some people hear music when they’re close to their soulmates. It gets louder when it’s closer to your time to meet.”

Jihoon cocked a brow, shifting a bit on the hard floor. “Then why does mine sound like pool parties and Canada?”

“I’m…not even going to ask what that means,” Jeonghan shot back, hands steepled, “but you hear what your soulmate is listening to. They’ve probably been hearing bits of our practice or anything you’re working on.”

“A-ha!” Jihoon finally lit up. “That’s why it stopped when I worked on the hip hop demo!”

“Maybe they were listening,” Jeonghan confirmed with a smile.

“My soulmate,” Jihoon shook his head in disbelief, partially having believed he wouldn’t have one as such a recluse, “my soulmate who probably thinks I’m a rapper now. And who listens to…” He pulls google back up to the page with the pool party song artist. “A band with a bunch of grown men who dress like superheroes.”

Jeonghan squinted at the image on the proffered phone, a bunch of spandex-top-clad men in dynamic poses holding their instruments, eyebrows raising. “Those guys look like dorks.”

“I think it’s comedy? They have a song about pizza too. And aliens. And skits on youtube.”

“Well, I guess opposites do attract. Have you tried following the music?”

The jaw drop was practically palpable. “Following it? I’ve been running away,” Jihoon chuckled.

“Well, it’ll only get worse until you find the person, you know,” Jeonghan lowered himself into a seated position at his side, “so if you want no more brass, I’d suggest-”

“Running around like a chicken with my head cut off.”

“I was actually going to say ‘leaving the Hybe building for once in your life’, but that works too. Who knows,” the older singer shrugged, “maybe it’ll get louder. Maybe it’ll stop on someone you really like. Your soulmate could just be a friend, you know. A friend of mine’s soulmate is her best friend and both girls are straight.”

“Alright,” Jihoon puts his hands up, “alright. I’ll do it, I’ll find them just to get the music to stop.”

“I’ll go with you,” Jeonghan offers, standing up and holding out his hand.

Ignoring the hand, Jihoon stands up on his own. “What, for the show?”

“For moral support! …but yes, also for the show. I can’t wait to see what your soulmate looks like,” Jeonghan grins.

After rinsing off and changing out of sweaty practice outfits, the dual vocalists exited the Hybe building to the sound of trumpets…well, if you were Jihoon, that is. It really was like he was the unwilling recipient of a mostly-ska music subscription directly, forcibly installed into his brain.

The light outside was harsh for someone like him who wasn’t used to it. Even Jeonghan blinked a bit as they made their way onto the sidewalk, skirting around a planted tree.

“Ok, we’ll start with going this way,” Jeonghan said, “tell me if it gets quieter or louder.”

Jihoon felt his frown tighten, which made Jeonghan laugh. “Let me guess…we’re getting closer?”

He laughed again at the dry nod he was given in response, pointing down the street where they’d turned left. “Then we keep going that way.”

They passed about five buildings before the sound was practically unbearable, every brass note an echoing assault on Jihoon’s cranial walls despite the considerable skill of their players. Hey, assaulted or not, he was a musician at the end of the day, one who had to respect the lungs on a fellow wind or even brass player.

Looking up from the blare, he saw a bookstore of all places. "This is it," he nodded toward the doors at Jeonghan before disappearing inside.

Mazelike walls of grey shelves bearing rainbows of books greeted him, but Jihoon didn't need to go far for the music, this new song an entirely different man and woman singing about gas in a car in a rapid-fire chorus, drowned out all perception. Tables sporadically dotted the area, and one of the closest ones drew him like a magnet, bringing him closer and closer...

...Until like an act of mercy, the sound abruptly stopped, Jihoon's eyes fluttering closed in sweet relief, a laugh almost escaping him at the returned use of all his cranial real estate. Relief was all he felt, the relaxing sensation washing over him hard enough to keep him frozen there, all but forgetting where he was until a voice cut him off.

"Hi, did you need something?"

Descending back to reality, Jihoon opened his eyes and fixed them upon the speaker, the lone occupant of the table he'd stopped at sitting there with a laptop. Call it a rush of sentimentality, but the first thing he noticed about you was the kindness of the smile on your face as you removed your headphones.

That wasn't what he came there for, though. "What are you always listening to that music for?" He asked.

"Uh, I'm a music major?" You responded, head tilted and tone questioning. Kind of cute.

"And you listen to ska?"

"I like it," you defended with a shrug, "and besides, I'm writing my thesis on the influence of ska on various sides of counterculture like its greater punk umbrella and the serious topics it can be used to convey through the light style, like faith, how people judge your views based on their expectations of your expression of them, or even feelings of self-doubt and fear of judgement that are conveyed in one of the most famous songs. The singer himself has even talked about how his social anxiety inspired the lyrics, which many agree really exemplify a human experience."

The concept of his soulmate being a scholar, or even just being a real non-psychopathic person, had barely occurred to Jihoon in light of all the trumpet torture, but now that you were before him, his ire was rapidly melting away, weeks of beating himself up over diminished performance replaced by the one stronger feeling: sheer curiosity.

"Oh, wow. I had no idea, and I'm a producer."

Your face lit up with surprise. "You're a producer?"

He just hummed and nodded.

"I'm really more interested in songwriting, but that all goes hand-in-hand," you said, "but hey- how did you know what I was listening to?"

There it was. The reason Jihoon had taken to, in the words of one Yoon Jeonghan, who was perusing books two tables away, 'leaving the Hybe building for once in his life'. "I've been hearing practically nothing but for, yeesh, how many weeks now?"

"You're the guy listening to all the kpop songs over and over?"

"It's my job."

"And that rap demo?"

"Also my job."

"It really threw me the first time my sound got interrupted."

"Yeah, think how I felt," Jihoon remarked drily, meeting your eyes.

Several heartbeats passed before you burst out with a laugh, and something about the sound of it coupled with the tail end of the relief wave was so infectious Jihoon found himself laughing, too.

"Here," you waved a hand over a chair, "sit down and I'll play you another Skankin' Pickle song."

"Another excuse me?"

"'90s ska band."

Brass-filled 'Nam flashbacks. "I'm good."

"Well, now that I've suggested something worse," you grinned, sending some part of Jihoon's heart flipping, "hopefully it'll sound better if I ask my soulmate whose name I still don't know on a date."

i always have fun naming my OCs, especially since it's always either something symbolic and meaningful or something totally random and kind of stupid. it's especially fun with TWST OCs since i try to follow the in-game naming conventions and those are just about the perfect mix of meaningful and kind of stupid, and since i'm sick and bored, here's some rambles about my OCs names

LYSANDER

theres actually no particular reason why i came up with this name lmao

it just kind of. popped up in my mind as i was trying to come up with a design for him (fun fact, i really just sat down one day and was all like "i'm just going to design my Yuu for funsies, i'm not going to do anything with it" and welp. look where i am now). my OCs just kinda name themselves sometimes. y'know how it is

but i had the name for him before i actually had his personality down and actually when coming up with his personality, i took a lot of inspiration from just the vibes his name gave me

also. this bitch

this bitch is the reason why i now dress like a victorian gentleman and i definitely had him on the back of my mind when making my own Lysander so you can see where some of his vibe came from

also in-universe Lysander named himself by just googling stuff like "fancy male names" and going on websites for baby names (the classic trans experience) lmao

since he doesn't remember his last name, i'm not really using it, but he does have one

his last name is actually Sinclair

i'm only saying that because it also has a kind of random backstory; there's a fanfic for a different fandom that rewired my brain chemistry when i was in high school. in that fic, the author used the last name Sinclair as a fanon name for one of the characters and i've been obsessed with it ever since lol

i knew from the beginning i wanted his last name to be french from the beginning (since, you know, Beauty and the Beast is a french tale) so i just kinda flipped thru a dictionary lmao

his last name means "midnight" - i know in the Disney version Belle has to confess her love to the Beast before the last petal of the rose falls but i've seen some retellings of Beauty and the Beast where Belle has to do it before midnight of an x day or something idk

KALLE BRUNNE

heavens Kalle's name gave me SO MUCH trouble i was close to just giving up lmao

Kalle is a very obvious pun on "cauldron" because like, what else

i played around with a few different spellings of it before i settled on this one; i wanted to pick Kelle at first but that just kinda sounds bad

my first idea for their last name was Shard, as in, glass shard (since his signature spell is called Seaglass) but i discarded it because i wanted to play into the color theme the Octavinelle has going on with their names

"brunne" comes from "brun", which is brown in danish

danish because the author of the original Little Mermaid, Hans Christian Andersen was Danish and i love him (i grew up with this big ass book of his tales, it definitely gave me some trauma as a child) so i thought it would be a cute reference

his name definitely wins the "kind of stupid" category (and i say this with affection don't worry)

my thought process was literally just Cinderella -> Ella -> Eliott?

well i do like my idea of taking absolute weird teenager and follow their life without filter BUT I have a fantasy story about anthropomorphic cats living in the medieval era who have to deal with racism, sexism and religion so I think I popped off with this one (it's been there for 7 years now lol)

1. i really enjoy ice cream, pastries, pretty much any korean food but especially sundubu jjigae, any type of soup (especially tomato, french onion, korean, or any type of soup with a light flavorful broth).

i'm confident making pretty much anything as long as i have a recipe, but i can make a lot of korean food from memory which is nice.

i would like to get better at making omelettes though. i never got the hang of flipping them 😅

2. okay so me and my best friend are both very intelligent people but when we're just hanging out together we're dumb and dumber, sharing a brain cell. our interactions mostly include gossip, ranting about obsessions, and cracking each other up. oh and me yelling at her for her HORRIBLE taste in men. i still love her sm 🥹

3. okay so for leather jackets i currently have one, and it is literally my pride and joy. i think i found it at a nordstroms sophomore year of high school and i have not parted with it since. it's thick enough to be warm, but it doesn't look bulky which i love

however i do have a minor obsession with jackets and hoodies, so i also have a cropped black jean jacket from forever 21 i got in high school (listen i haven't changed my wardrobe much in the last three or four years), a black cardigan which is the comfiest thing i own, a black and gold track jacket from simone biles's gold over america tour, and an oversized black hoodie.

basically if it's black and i can wear it over something else i love it

4. i wouldn't say i'm necessarily someone who has true collections, but i do have certain things i have saved and trinkets i love. actually that's a lie. i'm a book collector of sorts, in the sense that my favorite gift to receive and my favorite thing to buy is books. so i own more than 500 books. i love the way books feel, the way they smell, how crisp they are when they're new, and how soft and worn they get when they've been well loved and read again and again. in particular, i really love used books. especially ones that were obviously read again and again. i like that they have a story behind them, and the pages i'm reading were once read by someone who fell in love with the plot and characters again and again.

this one is soooo fun for me. i wish this was in the original tracklist of The Fame instead of Disco Heaven tbh. it's fun, it fits the energy and vibe of the album so well. it would be a better closer imo :<

general comments - this album is POP PERFECTION in the literal sense im not even kidding. it's her shortest, but probably the most impactful work.

in terms of production, it has such a CLARITY that is really hard to see in many albums. the art direction and music meets the production perfectly. The Fame is an iconic album, sure. but The Fame Monster really takes a huge step ahead from that if you ask me. which says a LOT about the quality of this album

i want to say, the lyrics in this album is probably my favorite from her works. it just!!!! so good, so powerful!!! the dark side of fame may seem like an overdone concept, but she does it so well here

i would say this is her best album if i didnt know what will come later in her career lmao. it's just so good, so clean, so inspirational, i would just think "okay how will she top this cmon now"... but she does she really does that's really impressive on its own

Confession time

It has been 6 months (more or less) since I joined Tumblr and AO3 and I finally told my friends. I couldn't not tell them because it has become a big part of my life now, especially writing fanfics. A year ago I wasn't even writing a single word in my native language. And NOW I can't stop writing. Like it's a new hobby. And I think I just can't live without it anymore.

It took me a long time to tell them because I was scared of their reactions to be honest. I know they are open because otherwise we wouldn't be friends but still. I was scared they find that ridiculous or worse that they didn't understand how important it is for me and how much it changed me.

And man, they reacted sooo well. One already read fanfics since high school and loves Dean and Destiel. Plus I already send her some of my fics. The second one hasn't watched SPN and doesn't know a thing about Tumblr and fanfiction. And the last one is a Sam girl and is not really into reading fanfiction but still wanted to read what I wrote about Destiel. So I picked one, that wasn't easy to choose but I did and I hope she likes it or at least doesn't throw up while reading it.

Anyway, their backgrounds might be different, but all of them found it awesome and asked me why I haven't told them before. And I told them that it was also because I had to process the whole thing on my own, because it FUCKING changed me and the perception I had of myself. But that's also why I had to tell them, because it changed me that much and if they didn't know about it, it's like they would know me anymore.

So if you don't know how to talk about it to your friends but want to and you need inspiration then here below, this is what I sent them to explain. It might not be everyone's experience though but there this is mine:

"I should tell you because it's been 6 months now, so I've had plenty of time to accept it. You know how abnormal I am about Supernatural and especially Dean and Cas. Like, it never did that to me with any show before and when I say THAT you don't know what I'm talking about because I didn't tell you. The THAT: I created a Tumblr account, where I follow people, people I don't know follow me and I post stuff on it on SPN, on Destiel. I also created an AO3 account. Where I read fanfics but not only. Hold on tight. Me, who didn't like French or English classes when we were at school. You know me, I've never been literary, let alone in another language. But now I write fanfics in English and I LOVE it. It's my new passion, it's become a big part of my life and I think it helps me on a daily basis, I'm sure it does, like it helped me a lot especially when I had nothing to do all day when I was unemployed and it still helps me. Because it's a way of expressing myself and when I'm inspired it's an incredible feeling, I've never really known that before (except maybe when I was drawing) and I can't live without it now. I spend a lot of my free time on it and it's still not enough, which is also why I get frustrated when my weekends feel too short. It's because I'd like to take more time off to work on all the fanfic ideas I have. Because I can't always write between my evening shower and preparing dinner because it's too short, sometimes I need to take time to be able to sort out my ideas. But sometimes it just comes to me, like Saturday morning when I was just waking up in bed, I wrote a few hundred words because an idea popped into my brain. So I wanted to tell you because it's important to me. It may sound ridiculous to some, but I don't care because the feelings it gives me when people like what I write or comment that the characters sound like themselves or that I've made them cry make me happy (yes, I do like making people cry, apparently lmao). Yesterday I wasn't doing too well, I couldn't get any work done. I must have PMS going on or some crap like that, I felt empty and I didn't feel like doing anything because I couldn't see the point, whatever. I wrote a few cute words about Dean and Cas, my loves, and it made me feel better. It's kind of magical. I feel like my writing has improved a bit in 6 months. I don't think I can live without writing anymore anyway, and I never thought I'd say that one day. Here you know everything, it frustrated me that you didn't know, because it's cool to share it with strangers online but if my friends don't know about it, it doesn't make sense 😘 especially given the role and place it has in my life."

🧵 Morgan 🧵 Welsh origin, meaning “sea-born” or “circling sea.” I don’t know where Morgan’s name came from insofar as choice--he just sort of popped into my head one day and I landed on a random name. I did have a friend in high school named Morgan who was a stage manager in our drama department, but my Morgan isn’t based on her in the slightest. 

🐶 Zachary 🐶 Hebrew origin, meaning “God remembers.” Again, just another name that I liked the syllabic count and sound of. Though the meaning now that I look at it isn’t too off course for his character 👀

🎭 Ariel 🎭 Hebrew origin, meaning “lion of God.” Now this one was chosen intentionally, for the Shakespeare’s Ariel in The Tempest--the beginning of choosing theatrical names for a theater wip. That was the first time I came across Ariel as a masculine name; Ariel was actually male in conception, but they’ve since evolved into a nonbinary person. 

🍸 Travis 🍸 French origin, meaning “to cross” or “toll collector,” lmao. Travis came about randomly--I wanted one that wouldn’t sound too out of place in the vintage city setting he appears in.

💐 Seonghwa 💐 Korean origin, meaning “to be a star.” I didn’t know this one and it’s actually pretty fitting! Seonghwa is actually named after his faceclaim (the singular one I have in all of TGGT), who happens to be a kpop artist in Ateez, whose debut song Treasure was instrumental in the early inspiration of TGGT. 

💋 Christina 💋 Latin origin, meaning “a follower of Christ.” Christina was named after Christine Daae from The Phantom of the Opera, though their personalities are not similar in the slightest.  

🧶 Cashmere 🧶 English origin, a soft wool from the Kashmir goat. I co-opted Cashmere for use as a proper noun because I’m a ho for that, and I liked the idea of a child working in the costume department with a textile-related name. 

👑 Pippen 👑 Germanic origin, meaning “father.” Pippen is named after the musical Pippin, which I know absolutely nothing about but like the name of. He’s the defacto authority of the theater kids, so that meaning is pretty interesting. 

💤 Winnie 💤 Welsh origin, short for Winifred, meaning “fair one” or “smooth, soft, happiness,” “blessed peacemaking.” There’s a bunch it looks like. Winnie is my sweet baby girl, another vintage sounding name I liked for the time period. 

💪 Percival 💪 French and Welsh origins, meaning “pierce the vale.” Now, Percival is named entirely after a guy I used to work with a few years ago, and based off him in appearance too. I rarely base characters off of people I’ve known irl, but for some reason he stuck. Fantastic eyebrows, deep voice, hulking Hispanic guy. Some people called him Percy. 

💃 Temperpina 💃So.... I’m a dumbass it looks like..... I think I was going for Terpsichore, the Greek muse of dance and dramatic chorus. AS IT TURNS OUT, somehow I threw it into a brain blender and ended up with Temperpina instead, which is! not! a name!! whatever!!! The intent to carry on a theatrical theme was continued!!

🎶 Lottie 🎶 French origin, meaning “little and womanly.” Back on track here! Lottie was also named after Christine Daae (lmaooo), specifically her nickname Little Lottie. 

🩰 Yeseul 🩰 Korean origin, meaning “dew” or “pretty, lovely.” Yeseul is also inspired by a little girl actual real life Seonghwa interacted with once (it’s very precious), and I fell in love with the sound of it. In TGGT, Yeseul is his younger cousin.

For the question ~ I think 70s is my fav music era as I feel like it was very bold and experimental in a strange way that fit just right to my taste, especially with Bowie! My fav Bowie era would be The Plastic Soul 74-76, around the late Diamonds Dog and Young American/Thin White Duke. And ofc my fav album is Station To Station (i am basic hahaha)

For VU if I have to pick one album out of four (I just expose myself that I count Loaded as VU and I do not count Squeeze 😂), I would say White Light/White Heat as i think this album is VU at their rawest form. Personally, I think the banana album is better both lyrically and musically but WL/WH just has the kick that I prob wouldn’t find on other bands

Yes I LOVE Velvet Goldmine!!!! This movie never failed to delight me. Idk if it’s because I get so much entertainment from picking up bit and pieces abt Bowie, Lou, and Iggy Pop rather than actually like the plot but still… I enjoy it and that’s enough 🤣

OK IM NOT A HUGE COFFEE FIEND BUT ILL DABBLE MY OPINIONS IN HERE

Sorry these r all out of order my thoughts are like fucking scrambled asf dude LMAO

Meryl likes hazelnut infused coffee, something dark and not too rich w/ minimal sugar and oat milk perhaps? Probs doesn’t care if it’s iced or not, but she tends to take small sips every now and then and iced lasts longer, so usually iced.

Milly likes something with caramel and she gets a pastry or smth. Maybe a cake pop if they’re at Starbucks, a Boston cream donut if they’re at Dunkin (that’s my personal fav sooo) but she doesn’t really care for caffeine, she’s indifferent towards it. Mainly enjoys the sweets.

Vash also prefers the sweets but likes a classic French vanilla I think ^^ nothing too crazy, but he does like it iced because he has a habit of getting excited and burning his tongue (or spilling it on himself). A bit on the sweeter side, doesn’t really care for what kind of sweetener, basic amount of milk or cream, he’s easy like that. He does love doughnuts, though I’m sure we already knew that.

VASH WANTS A MATCHING PAIR i am debating on what kind he’d have hmmm (pullin up pinterest rn) 

These bad boys and he wears his funky socks with them, occasionally mismatching (which drives Nai crazy) (he finds the shoes tacky) (he owns a pair in white. Because he sticks with neutrals. Because they’re versatile. That bright red he always wears is going to catch up with him…)

I think he also likes to get bacon bits and shredded cheese to toss into a potato. Like if he’s feeling fancy he may even buy sour cream and make this his main meal for like the whole week. Dude makes a baked potato every day. Same toppings. (Meryl questions how the hell he doesn’t go insane)

Milly and Meryl are such amazing roommates dude them being domestic is so sweet (they end up dating) (LETS GO LESBIANS LETS GO) (I’ve been debating on implementing Vashwood or not because I am writing reader into this au for drabbles soooo ig we’ll see lol) but they pair together so well. Their decor differs on the side of the room; Milly has her books stacked on her desk with a few mementos from home placed sweetly, funky cowboy hat hung from her bedpost and a few hooks Meryl was sure to triple check didn’t have the adhesive that peels off the damn paint from the walls because she is NOT paying extra because the walls got all dinged up. Milly has a bulletin board her family got for her to stick photos onto, though all of the photos adorning it consist of Meryl’s Polaroids they share :)

Meryl’s side of the room consists of an extension cord. Several. She has to charge her headphones, watch, phone, laptop, this- (me projecting rn ngl) and you’re so right by the fact she likes nothing bulky ish (like the over the ear Sony or Bose headphones) she’s into smth more compact. She has her AirPods case attached to her belt loop 24/7, it makes for a cute little touch.

They have a rug that gets constantly trampled on every time the guys come over T<T Meryl is glad she read up to not get a nice carpet because it’ll get wrecked. She was right.

Milly also has a wii she found at a garage sale that they play Mario party 9 on, it makes for a fun night with some takeout and woo! They’re having fun! Oh god- Nick, that roll totally sucked- HEY DONT ELBOW ME! AAA! -Vash

(That HC has been rotting in my brain for over a month. A MONTH.)

Milly’s handwriting is sweet and simple. She has the midwestern grandma handwriting iykyk, she saw her grandma/mom’s handwriting and loved it so.. it just kinda stuck.

Meryl’s handwriting is straightforward, it kinda reminds you of teacher handwriting although I do think when she’s stressed or rushed when writing you can tell. Her letters taper off more, it’s a bit more shaky, everything flows together a bit more.

And yeah Nai having to basically parent Vash since they were 16 means getting used to their eating habits. He’s gone over his diet w Vash (since Vash is limited on what he can eat/how much he can eat since it damages his body- medical stuff). Vash teases him on it but there’s a definite line, the worry creasing his brother’s brow doesn’t whiz past him.

He knows he means well and wishes him the best- along with the fact he definitely feels he owes him. They’ve been through a lot together, and something small like this is a way for Nai to show he cares. Hence why Vash always makes time to eat with his brother, even if it’s silent some days. Even if it sometimes feels tiring to have silence, (the need for music or smth lol) they’ll still eat together. On some days Vash will chat with him at the counter as Knives cooks, feeling sort of guilty for his concerning eating habits some days.

He’s trying. For Nai. Some days it’s hard for him to do anything, and he truly feels he doesn’t deserve his brother some days. Doting in his own way.

College AU Thoughts (cont.)

-Meryl probably has some really nice gel, ballpoint, colored pens that she literally abuses all the time. Sometimes her notes aren’t even totally neat she’s just sleep deprived and highlighting/underlining the important areas of her textbook as she listens to her lecture

-Vash definitely has to listen to audio playback of lectures- does he try to take notes in class? Yeah. But they look like chicken scratch, his handwriting pales in comparison to literally anyone else’s T<T listening while he does smth else really helps w/ how he learns (autistic vash) (cough)

-Meryl and Milly have matching pairs of rip-off Birkenstocks they found at like Marshall’s then saw a pair w a marijuana leaf and Milly went, “Reminds me of Wolfwood!” So they got it (to Meryl’s amusement and dismay). Wolfwood wears them often

-Ok, I’ve been debating on this hc that Vash sometimes gets invited to parties, considering he’s a bit of a campus celeb. Handsome, athletic (tennis player legend), but he can easily get overwhelmed. He’s having fun with the fame for like a good 30 minutes to an hour and then he just kinda tires out more as the night drags on.

-Meryl’s outfits consist of her wanting comfort yet maintaining her usual feminine flair. Yoga pants with a cami and a simple jacket, or on nicer days more of a fitted sweater. Perhaps a jumper and a baby tee/turtleneck underneath- I think when she’s feeling it she def likes Monica Helper’s looks from Friends. A casual, yet still sweet vibe.

-for accessories she probably has an Apple Watch and the staples- hoop earrings, her classic dangle/rectangular earrings, some silver hardware if she’s feelin extra funky and a classic black belt because I do believe she hates it when her jeans are too low it’s a big thing that annoys her to no end.

-On the other hand, Milly’s outfits are less fitted and I think she’s more laid back in her appearance, preferring some of the crew necks she’s collected from several events her siblings have been to or hand me downs from her country family. She wears vintage athletic wear though, it’s cute on her and it suits her well.

-she has a few simple scrunchies she remains loyal to, not wanting to cut her hair short and often tying it up. When she feels more femme she’s got some cute necklaces that pair well with any cute sweaters she has- she also has some maxi skirts she wears too! :) (can’t find an exact image of what I have in mind + I have a 10 image limit on mobile lol)

-Meryl avidly has to live off of coffee. Girl is always so organized but truthfully she’s half alive due to the fact she’s a frequent visitor at the campus cafe and is familiar w/ some of the baristas who often cut her slack if she ever needs a pick me up.

-Vash is like a crazy good teacher, to some people’s surprise. He can word concepts in a way that breaks them down easier, sometimes he even has some little memory hints he uses lol. For any other ND kid in class who’s a bit bashful they usually flock to him, he’s got such a charming aura and never fails to make anyone feel a bit more comfortable.

-Wolfwood teases Meryl for her aforementioned coffee addiction, but I’d imagine he takes a liking to something like a pink drink. Like- usually that stuff is too sugary for him, but smth about it has him coming back for more!!

-Meryl has an array of podcasts she listens to- I think she def dabbled in true crime maybe?

-Milly and Meryl’s shared dorm is actually really chill. There’s some clutter on each side but they’ve got a shared mini fridge (Meryl got it but doesn’t mind Milly using it because she likes her) it’s stocked with pudding cups

-Milly got Pinterest after Meryl wanted to share ideas for food ideas on weekends (they’re both on a meal plan but still need to eat on Saturdays and Sunday’s lol) so they usually end up going out for some cheap takeout w/ Vash and Wolfwood or make something in a rice cooker they found at a thrift store that works kinda ok… for the price they got it.

-Like they’re cutting up spam, eggs, tossing rice on there, some veggies they got and sometimes they splurge on cheap fruit like bananas and apples

-They both like to eat well and unlike Vash and Wolfwood they won’t live off of instant ramen and takeout (although Vash eats pretty well considering he lives with Nai, who makes sure he regulates his diet due to sports and Vash’s long list of medical concerns)

-Wolfwood eats like shit though I’ll be completely honest

-The guy knows how to shop. But he doesn’t want to. So he lives off of cup noodles and old pizza, takeout and shit, and thanks to crazy fast metabolism he works it off whenever he does some form of working out and whatnot.

-Will agree that he has the best of the best songs, his music taste is unparalleled. Like he’ll be busting it down to 6up 5oh Cop-Out (Pro/Con) by Will Wood from his middle school days then some new metal he’s gotten into (he peeked over Knives’ Spotify playlists) OO OR OR THIS IS LOVE BY AIR TRAFFIC CONTROLLER (I’m def not protecting w/ what’s on my Spotify rn I’m shit at song names I just know vibes)
