The bacon in the pan on the stove slowly turns crispy brown the longer it sits in the grease. The food smells amazing as does most food. You have a very sensitive nose and acute vision. Spencer likes to quiz you on what he has in his lunch bag without opening it just to see if you can smell what’s in there.
You look to the right and see Spencer pace the length of the living room with his phone to his ear. His mouth moves but no noise comes out of it. The bacon cooks but no noise comes from the sizzling. The coffee machine blinks rapidly to let you know that it’s done brewing but no noise comes from it. Spencer’s face scrunches up in frustration as he becomes more animated on the phone. Man, there’s nothing you wouldn’t give to hear the sound of his voice.
You’ve never heard anything make noise a day in your life. You’re deaf and have been since birth. Your entire family is hearing so you’re not sure where you got your deafness from. Is it even hereditary? Is it just a malfunction? You’re not exactly sure why you’re deaf and none of your family is, but it’s been a wild ride, to say the least.
The natural thing to do as a human is to express your emotions through words, but you can’t do that. Because you’ve never been able to hear, you never got the chance to learn how to speak. You’re an adult and don’t know how to speak. It hurt you sometimes knowing Spencer got to do something you’d never be able to do.
To express how you’re feeling, you took up painting and drawing at a very young age. To experiment with different colors and brushes, to create something to express how you’re feeling felt good. It felt so good that you wanted to provide that to other people who had a hard time expressing through words.
When you got out of college, you started a business of being an art teacher for deaf and hard-of-hearing people. Hearing people can join your class, obviously, but the target audience is people with a hearing disability. It’s gotten more popular over the years, so you have your own studio right down the road from your apartment.
If you’ve learned one thing about being deaf is that you’re not going to let it hinder your life in any way. The same thing goes for your relationship with Spencer.
When you met him, he was passing by your studio and thought you were the most beautiful woman in the world. Truly shining in your element. He learned very quickly that you were deaf but that didn’t stop him from wanting to get to know you. He never had the desire to learn Sign Language until he met you. That night, he studied the language and practiced signing so he would be able to talk to you.
Naturally, he picked the skill up quickly.
He asked you on a date that very next day. It was impressive to know someone who didn’t know a single thing about Sign Language only to come to you the next day and know enough to have a conversation. He didn’t know everything so you helped him where you could; he was being so cute about it.
No one has ever gone through so much trouble just to talk to you. Most people would either write what they want to say or not bother talking to you at all. Not Spencer. He put in the effort.
That’s how you knew he was the one.
He came by your studio every day until he convinced you that living together was the best thing. He lives pretty close to his job at the BAU but moved in with you which puts an extra thirty minutes on his commute every morning. He gave up living where he was just to be with you because it was easier for you to be close to your studio.
You fell for him and fell hard. Plus, he loves having all of your artwork in the apartment. It’s very colorful and expressive, and that’s how he knows how you feel. He’d never want to put a limit on what you can create, and you’d never want to leave his life dull and colorless.
Your disability has never come between you, but now you have a choice to make.
Your parents called you yesterday over video chat to tell you they have the money to give you surgery for a cochlear implant… if you want it. You’d finally be able to hear. You’d finally be able to be just like everyone else. It’s not a decision you can make lightly because there is so much weight behind it.
The deaf community has done so much for your life; you love what it stands for. It’s a community that constantly proves itself worthy against a world that thinks so negatively about it. Some of your bestest friends are deaf, and they’re wonderful people. Just because someone can’t hear, doesn’t make them any less of a person.
Taking this surgery feels like a cop-out like you’re just looking for a way to escape the deaf community and take the easy way out. It’s not like that at all. You’d never want to be separated from a culture that is so diverse and so beautiful, but you’d have a shot at being able to hear. It’s something you’d always wanted for yourself even if you couldn’t admit it.
You’d finally be able to hear bacon pop and sizzle. You’d be able to hear your mom laugh at one of your dad’s corny jokes. You’d get to hear Spencer’s voice. How can you accept a surgery like this and not feel like you’re abandoning a culture that cared for you? You’re more than capable of living a happy and successful life without being able to hear but does that mean you should? That you want to?
Spencer gets off the phone and sees you staring into the pan of bacon in thought. He walks over to you and makes sure you can see him instead of sneaking up on you. He doesn’t know how many times he’s approached you without you knowing he was there. You snap out of your own thoughts and look at him.
What’s wrong? He signs.
I can’t stop thinking of what my parents said.
Are you having doubts? You shrug. It doesn't matter if you can hear or not. I fell in love with you and will support you in whatever you want to do.
Damn, you really got lucky to be with a man like Spencer. You take the bacon off the pan and plate it, but you don’t move to eat it.
I know. Thank you.
I have to go to work, but I will see you afterward.
He leans in and kisses you, making it last a few seconds longer than usual. When he pulls away, he smiles at your dazed look. He makes you feel things you never knew a man could make you feel. He mouths, “I love you” and you mouth it right back to him. He leaves the apartment soon after, and you rush over to the small balcony you have that overlooks the busy street below.
Spencer walks away from the apartment and to the nearest bus stop which is at the end of the street. The bus comes ten minutes later and takes him to work, but you don’t leave your spot on the balcony. People bust their asses to get to where they need to go unbeknownst that you’re watching them from above.
There are two mothers by the bus stop who have children with them who look to be crying. They dig through their bags for some food to ease their child’s discomfort. Across the street is a couple that looks to be arguing. You can tell by the angry look on the woman’s face and the desperate look on her partner’s face. Kids play basketball in the park next to the bus stop. People walk their dogs who bark at other dogs they see.
The bustling city below and you have an opportunity to hear all of it.
If you’re going to get the surgery, you want it for yourself and no one else. You don’t want to be doing this for anyone but yourself. You want to be able to hear and listen to movies instead of reading them. You want to be able to listen to music instead of feeling them. You want to be able to listen to Spencer when he talks instead of reading his hands.
So, you get it. You get the surgery.
When you wake up, your whole family is waiting for you in your hospital room. Your head is in major pain from where they cut into you to place the cochlear implant. There is a device that will stick to the side of your head like a magnet that will communicate to the implant in your head so that you can hear the world around you.
The doctor comes in with the device and explains to you that once he places it on, he’ll calibrate it and turn it on. Your entire family is silent as he does this because they don’t want to bombard you with noise after living a life of no noise. Your mom looks at the doctor who nods as soon as the device is turned on.
The first thing you hear is the ticking of the machine next to you. The next thing you hear is the fluorescent bulbs in the lights above buzzing. Everything is heightened after never having the sense. Your mother steps forward and grabs your hands with a smile on her face.
“Can you hear me?” she asks.
You don’t understand what she is saying but hearing her voice for the first time brings tears rolling down your cheeks. She lets go of your hands and signs at the same time she talks so you at least know what she’s saying.
“Can you hear me?” You nod eagerly. She then signs your name. “Your name is Y/N.”
This is so overwhelming for you. Your body has never felt this high before. Your family takes turns signing and speaking to you, and you never stop crying once. Your mom laughs and you look at her with all the love in the world. Her laugh is so beautiful.
“Do you want to see Spencer?” your mom asks and signs at the same time.
You nod eagerly and she steps into the hallway to bring him in. He’s kind of nervous. What if you don’t like his voice? What if you hate it? What if you only love him because he never talked? You can practically see the thoughts he’s having so you reach out for him. Your family shuffles out of the room to give you two some alone time while they talk to the doctor in the hallway. He takes your hand and rubs the back of it with his thumb.
Speak to me, you sign.
“Can you hear me?” he signs and asks. A new wave of tears comes rushing out. Fuck, his voice is so beautiful. “My name is Spencer.”
Your voice sounds like a sunset, you sign with a teary smile.
“I love you,” he signs and says.
Wow, so that’s what that sounds like.
I love you, you sign back.
You’re ready to start this next chapter of your life with Spencer by your side.

Everyone thinks that Wade has ADHD and that Logan is Autistic, but it's the other way around.
Wade has autism and Logan has ADHD.
(Part 1 : Autistic Wade.)
Wade hates change- he can handle change with warning- but not suddenly. If someone tells him they will be meeting at 2pm for lunch, they better be there at 2pm for lunch. Even a second later causes anxiety- and he will sit and stare at his Adventure Time watch until they come- every added second making him panic more internally.
He doesn't like certain textures. At all. It's why he makes half of his clothes- he can choose the fabric that he likes with no need to explain why he doesn't like other ones (other ones being denim. Wade hates denim with a burning passion and couldn't care less what other people say.)
Usually, he only has around 3 safe foods at a time. And they rarely change. It shifts between the same 10, and they have been the same 10 since he was a teenager. Chimichangas, Seeded Bagels, Tacos, Toast, Cereal (only 2 kinds), Chicken Nuggets, Rice, Pasta and Cheese. Wade counts cheese as its own food because he has sat and eaten a block for dinner before.
His routine is very important to him. Now, it's a messy seeming routine, but it's his routine, and he likes it. He gets up at 8 am every day (it used to be later, but then he started at the car dealership, and it had to change. It took him a good month to get used to it and feel okay about waking up at a different time.), goes for a piss and brushes his teeth, heads into to the kitchen and makes himself a bowl of cereal, then sits down on the couch while watching Adventure Time as he eats. He doesn't really mind what else happens during the day, until night time, where his routine kicks in again. He goes to the bathroom, brushes his teeth, and goes for a piss (he always pees before sleeping and after waking up. It limits needing to get up out of bed, and he hates leaving after he's all cozy.) before changing into his Wolverine pajamas and getting all cozy in bed to the sound of Golden Girls in the background.
Even though he is usually all jokes and innuendos, he still can sometimes misread body language and not notice when someone is being sarcastic. He had gotten better over the years- much better- but he still struggled with it sometimes. Wade never let on though, and luckily his whole making-jokes-and-wierd-comments-about-everything helped divert people away from noticing. It means that if he does misread a situation, he can just play it off as a joke and people believe him instantly.
Wade also deals with sensory issues and overstimulation- and on rare occasions meltdowns- but he has his way to deal with it. Atleast, he tries to deal with it (as much as he can anyway). He avoids sensory issues simply. Comfy clothing he likes the textures of, safe foods for every meal, avoiding bring in places he knows will get to him, headphones if it's too loud or if he needs more stimulation (he tends to blast music at deafening volumes if he is understimulated). And this means he mostly avoids overstimulation and subsequently meltdowns.
On the rare chance they do happen though, Wade usually ends up non-verbal. It makes it hard living with a blind person when that happens, but if he really needs to talk to Al he uses text to speech on his phone. He does want to speak, but his body just shuts down and is reduced to only basic functions. Breathing, blinking and sometimes eating if he can stomach it. So he learns how to finger spell in his free time (he doesn't expect anyone else too learn, mainly because he doesn't talk to people about his autism, but the idea of somehow being able to communicate without a phone or trying to force the words out is comforting) and it helps. Even if he doesn't have anyone to use it with. It settles that pit of anxiety of not being able to communicate. Luckily, it never lasts for long. The longest he has been nonverbal for was a whole day, but slowly he always gets his body back to its normal self.
He also has a huge horde of sensory toys and items. He has so many fidget spinners, tangles, squishys and anything else you can think off. Keeping his hands busy is a helpful stim for him (he has a tendency to do harmful stims and Al had yelled at him to find safe once), plus, he likes collecting any and all unicorn themed sensory toys. He also has a weighted blanket that helps him calm down. It's bright pink and covered in little Hello Kittys, and was something he had found late one night scrolling through some random ass online store.
And yes, Wade was diagnosed. He had been diagnosed when his parents found his behaviour odd as a kid and they'd gone to the doctor to see what was wrong. Apparently, they really weren't pleased with the answer, because he grew being told to be more normal. Being told to fit in more. It's why he masks (both figuratively and physically) so much, even as an adult. It didn't stop him from rambling about his hyperfiations or special interest, but he never used those kind of words. People just wrote him off as crazy and annoying (which he was) when he rambled about random things, but really, he was just info dumping.
It's why he likes Logan so much. Aside from the whole being madly inlove thing. Logan let's him ramble and he listens, he asks questions and adds to the discussion. Logan understands not liking certain textures and getting overwhelmed by bright lights or loud sounds (though, Wade didn't mind loud sounds too much). Logan never judges him for how he acts, for stimming, for when he couldn't speak. Logan takes it all in his stride and starts buying Wade unicorn themed fidget toys to add to the collection, he learns how to finger spell just incase Wade can't communicate one day, he buys Wade's safe foods and makes them for him whenever he wants. Logan even follows along with Wade's morning and night routines, doing it side by side with Wade.
It's refreshing to not be judged for any of these parts of him. It makes Wade love Logan more.
(The people who wanted this thank you! Hope you enjoyed more of my rambling! This is part one because it's so long. I'll post my ADHD Logan one soon, I promise! People who wanted to be tagged, here ya go! @flugsammy @intergalacticmaggot @6up-5oh-copout-procon)

did you know that…
while autism functioning labels never really had set diagnosable descriptions like autism levels & autism itself in DSM, so different clinicians may have different definitions, but—
did you know that for many of them (more than you imagine, even now), what different between high functioning & low functioning is just. intellectual disability?
way they use is:
high functioning autism = autism without intellectual disability
low functioning autism = autism with intellectual disability
(so back in asperger’s vs autistic disorder diagnosis days, asperger’s & high functioning autism/HFA & low functioning autism actually all mean slightly different things)
.
yes, one thing tumblr autism community tend get wrong is: unlike autism ADHD learning disabilities, intellectual disability (as single disorder) *directly* affect *everything* about person. from conceptual/cognitive/thinking/learning/etc to social to daily living & adaptive functioning to everything you can think of. and autism community tend downplay ID & ignore autistics with ID. so someone with even mild intellectual disability can be quite different than someone with similar presentation of autism but without ID. however—
intellectual disability being only criteria for medical label, that follow you n impact you for rest of life, that claim to describe how much you overall “function” (want everyone imagine be told by everyone that you function lowly). is wrong.
am nonverbal. have high support needs & need 24/7 someone close by. diagnosed with autism that border level 2 & 3. have many severe symptoms, very impaired theory of mind & often do not even understand people exist & have own different thought n feelings that not like my own, have little to no interest in social, cannot mask n is visibly autistic, have behavioral issues, motor skill lower than bottom 1% of age group, etc etc
& another autistic with maybe mild ID, who with support & hard work is living more independently, who struggles but can speak by mouth, who have job, who with right guidance have enough social skills to keep some good in person friends
am would be called high functioning. n second person, low functioning. all because they have ID while me, don’t.
so, me get “very fortunate (sarcasm)” experience of be grouped in category n be black sheep n be expected assumed able to & be questioned why can’t do things other “high functioning” autistics can do, because they have lower support needs than me & lower autism levels than me. while second person get assumed they not able do things it too dangerous too risky & others be shocked about them do every small thing, simply because they have ID & thus must be low functioning, not because they actually cannot do it.
though. even if there someone like me but have ID. still don’t think anyone should be told they so terrible at functioning they “function lowly.”
diagnoses can be important & having comorbid disorder especially something as general as ID can mean different things compare to someone without that comorbid disorder. but language about person should be individualized based on each person, not something general that only look at diagnoses n not the person. and, that language need be actual respectful about person, because that who we are: people. even if some of us have a LOT of struggles where we physically depend on other people 24/7.
(n everytime talk about autism functioning labels, feel need to say: forcibly labeling someone with functioning labels problematic because everything just said. not because all autistics same & by same, mean verbal low support needs)

gemini moon
gemini is ruled by mercury, the planet of youthfulness, intelligence, speaking, the mind, language, and reasoning. the gemini personality is witty, curious, intellectual, charming, social, adaptable, and childlike.
moon represents emotions, intuitions, comforts, unconscious mind, instincts, spirituality, motherhood, fertility, femininity, and your home.
what does it mean when these two interlink?
Tumblr media
♊︎ gemini is not an emotional sign, while the moon is all about emotions. you may rationalize your emotions instead of feeling them, due to your logical tendencies from the gemini personality and the planet it is also ruled by (mercury). when you are feeling intense emotions it could be quite a lot because you don’t know where exactly to put your emotions, you just want them out of your heart. speaking about your feelings also may not be easy, due to the fact it may be hard to identify and talk about them without trying to logically understand them. they could also be quite easy to speak about though (depending on other aspects and your chart) due to gemini representing speech and communication, and moon representing emotions. i could also see that individuals with this placement could be sad when they aren’t able to talk about something that’s bother them, or they could use humor as a way to express their feelings.
♊︎ the moon represents comfort, gemini in moon can mean that laughter and joking around could bring you comfort. being around your siblings and/or cousins is also something that could make you feel comfortable. speaking to others and just socializing brings you familiarity. even if you are an introvert, you could be the kind of person who is quiet at first but then gets more talkative as others get to know you, and that can make you happy. when you learn about a new topic or learn more than you already knew is another thing i could see that brings you comfort. if you are around children, or if you are around things from your childhood, this could make you happy as well.
♊︎ your mother could’ve been someone who was more logical than emotional. she could’ve had a hard time connecting or comforting you emotionally as well. your mom could’ve been a talkative person and/ or has a lot of friends. she could’ve given birth to many children, aka your siblings. your mom could’ve also been a real charmer and adapted to situations and people easily. she might’ve had a youthful side to her as well. on the down side, she could’ve been distant in some way, wether it be physical or emotional. her anxiety could’ve also been rough
♊︎ your house hold could’ve been filled with siblings or cousins. people in your family could be talkative, and very friendly people. there also might be people who are very logical, intelligent, and witty in your family. i could also see that there’s a lot of jokesters in your family or maybe people in your family that work with younger people.
♊︎ writing may be one of your preferred ways of self expression. you could enjoy drawing or even speeches. you could enjoy public speaking or slam poetry.

I love your work so much! The way you write headcanons is honestly the best I’ve seen on tumblr lol
Would you be able to write headcanons of Iida, Midoriya, and Bakugo with a nervous and introverted GN Reader who’s a foreign exchange student struggling to learn and speak Japanese properly, like to the point they have to constantly repeat themselves thousands of times slowly for anyone to understand and wanting to learn more? Reader’s got the basics down obviously but ya know, they’ve gotta expand their knowledge on bigger more complex words, slang, etc. Maybe add in a sprinkle of reader being shamed by their peers for their lack of knowledge on Japanese.
[ Thank you so much for being a fan of my work. Truth be told, I'm not even sure if I write headcanons the "correct" way, but who cares! If it works, it works, right? Anywho, I enjoy this idea very much. Learning a new language is hard. Although I always joke I speak three languages which are Swearing, Sarcasm, and English. Notice how English is the last one, haha. Anyways, I hope you enjoy these headcanons! ]
Tumblr media
It wasn't easy being a foreign exchange student, but as an inspiring hero in the making, you wanted to enroll in one of the best hero training schools and that was none other than Yuuei High. There was a small problem though, you were nervous and a little anti-social, introverted as some may say, and this made communicating that much more difficult.
You were learning Japanese slowly, and as such, you struggled to engage in conversation with others who often snubbed you. Until you met Tenya who initially noticed your struggle with comprehending his language. "Pardon, perhaps I could be of assistance?" He patiently encouraged you to practice pronunciation and grammar. He even went as far as to tutor you and provide you with structured lessons and resources.
He remained gentle and encouraging through your struggles with learning Japanese and offered kind words and praise for the progress you have made. You appreciated the comforting environment he provided and felt as though you could speak to him without fear of judgment.
"Perhaps these will assist you in your attempts at learning various Japanese slang terms, and such," he suggested, placing various books in front of you. While somewhat overwhelming, Tenya suggested that learning the slang terms might help ease your anxiety. He also continued to ensure that making mistakes is essential to the learning process.
While most were respectful of your learning process, there were a few select students who chose to shame you or insult you whenever you attempted to engage in conversation. Tenya, however, was quick to intervene and address the issue firmly as was his duty as Class President and often lectured them on the importance of empathy, understanding, and respecting you as a foreign exchange student.
Tenya continued to celebrate your achievements, especially when he noticed your confidence in the Japanese language rising. "I am quite proud of the resilience and persistence you displayed in overcoming the linguistic barriers you've faced!" Of course, you knew you wouldn't have accomplished what you did without his support and guidance, and hoped he would always be your friend.
Tumblr media
Izuku immediately notices your struggles with speaking Japanese, but being the person that he is, tries to approach to help. Although his shyness got the best of him and despite patiently listening and trying to make sense of your words, his face burns red the entire time.
"I c-could try to h-help you...if you w-want, I mean...I've never tutored a-anyone before but um..." He knows that learning a new language takes time and patience, both qualities he possessed and as an aspiring hero, he couldn't just abandon someone he knew needed help.
Since English was one of the courses provided at Yuuei, Izuku decided to make his self-initiated tutoring sessions with you more fair by allowing you to teach him some phrases either in your native tongue or English in hopes that it would provide a supporting and engaging atmosphere and show you that you were not the only one struggling with a foreign language.
Although Izuku had the fierce heart of a hero, he normally avoided starting conflicts with other students, but this went out the door when he witnessed others shaming you for your language struggles. "H-hey! S-stop that, they're still l-learning and..." He'd try to keep a stern demeanor, and while he knew that defending you was the right thing to do, usually he'd drag you away before things escalated.
On more than one occasion, Izuku would stay up with you, engaging in late-night and casual conversation in Japanese to help improve your conversational and social skills. Uraraka and Tenya would always volunteer to help as well and provide pointers to you if needed.
"I m-mean even All Might, v-visited the U-United States and he k-knows some foreign l-language skills so I thought maybe...t-this would help you too." He thought incorporating hero-related terms into your lessons would help give your language goals a more heroic feeling thus giving you the motivation to conquer them.
Tumblr media
A growl rumbled in his throat. "Shut the hell up already!" He snapped, making you stumble away from him. He hated it when you constantly repeated yourself. Hell, even he could admit he wasn't the most patient individual, and hearing you repeat word after word, phrase after phrase was irritating.
Despite his annoyance, and the fact that he was one of the few that tended to put you down because of the language barrier between you and him. He wasn't so ignorant as to ignore the determination and effort you put into learning Japanese and frankly, he was kind of impressed. Of course, he'd never admit that.
"That's not how you say that dumbass!" He snapped one day after hearing you, yet again, struggle with a certain phrase when engaging in conversation with someone else and he wasn't hesitant about correcting you as well as listing off other phrases he knew you had trouble with, unintentionally becoming your personal tutor in the process.
You had a lot of textbooks and practice books regarding the Japanese language and when Katsuki looked at them, he was severely disappointed. The books in question were too proper and lacked useful slang that permeated the Japanese language or at least how he spoke it. So, he took the time to teach you said slang terms, but you weren't too sure you'd make use of them.
"Soooo Baku bro! I heard you're giving Y/n language lessons!" Eijirou exclaimed one day, making Katsuki growl in response. "Yeah, what's it like teaching a foreigner anyway?" Kaminari chirped in, not realizing how insensitive he sounded. "Shut the hell up dumbasses!" Katsuki snapped. "That...idiot is putting in more effort than either of you with your damn schoolwork!" Hell, he should know. He had tutored them on occasion as well.
Although you assumed you wouldn't use the slang terms Katsuki taught you, there came a day when you found yourself in an argument with another hero student who happened to be using some foul terms to describe you and your home country. You ended up using every slang term Katsuki had taught you in response and when he learned about this, he felt oddly proud of you.

I've seen several people on this website confused about the way I smurf, so I thought I'd give a lesson in Smurfic grammar.
Smurf is a language characterized by the usage of the word "smurf." For me, and other Smurfs, it's a psychosmurfical compulsion we can't control- only Papa Smurf has been able to smurf himself to speak in a way understandable to non-Smurfs, and hems had many centuries to learn.
When you speak Smurf, you smurf every so often- within certain grammar rules. Any past participle smurfed with "to smurf" takes an "ed" in the past tense. Smurf can also be used to resmurf a noun, but only one noun in a compound word, and you must keep the prefix and suffix.
For instance, bottle-opener could be smurfed into "smurf-opener" or "bottle-smurfer"- I, personally, prefer bottle-smurfer- but never "bottle-smurf."
Positive adjectives are "smurfy," negative ones are "unsmurfy," but "smurfy" and "unsmurfy" are also words on their own. If you smurf an adverb, that’s "smurfily" or "unsmurfily." If something is better than something else, it would be smurfed "smurfier," and not "smurfer."
These rules are invariable, except in cases of euphony.
More below the cut.

It doesn't happen a lot, but for once I'll be venting on main. Let's talk about fandoms and languages, in a very frustrated way.
Many time, I have found myself upset at and exhausted by the entitlement of native English speakers when everyone else is already making the effort to speak their language.
Try (and I'm not being a Yoda here, I don't even say to do it, just to even try) to speak my language, and then we'll talk about the terminology I use and the grammar mistakes I make. Don't you dare dogpile on me for using the wrong word when I'm clearly not native. No, I was not trying to insult anyone. Yes, what I said was wrong, but you can point it out in a didactic way without being aggressive, and you can acknowledge that we are not all equal in languages or in our abilities in learning English, the One Language To Rule Them All (with all the dark implications of the title.)
Heaven's sake. I know I'm sometimes missing nuances. I am painfully aware that I'l never speak or write like a native speaker, and I'll never grasp the full underlying meaning of some words. Especially when they are words that have evolved, that have become something else in the context of modern Internet, in a corner of the web that I don't visit, because most of my English interactions are in the context of fandoms.
I don't understand your memes. I don't understand your jokes. I likely never will, and I've given up on asking for explanations, because they usually come with even more ununderstandable jokes, sometimes borderline mockery.
And don't you dare tell me "but your English is so good! Don't worry!" because guess what? I know. I've been studying that language for 25 years. It's my fucking job. I am rather confident in the fact that I know English grammar better than most native English speakers. It doesn't mean I don't make stupid mistakes, and it doesn't make me a native speaker. No matter how hard I try, I will never, ever be a native speaker.
Day after day after day, I'm putting in the effort of thinking in a language that isn't mine, looking for hidden meanings and weighing every sentence because even after 25 years, they'll never come naturally. Day after day, interaction after interaction, I wonder if I'll accidentally insult someone because of an awkward, gauche phrasing.
And I write this while being fully conscious that I have the priviledge of being a native speaker of one of the colonising languages. There are tons of resources in my language.
"If you're not happy, then just don't go to English fandoms."
See, that's the thing. Fandom activity exists in my language, but not in the fandoms I'm in. But you know, maybe I will. Maybe I'll snap and populate a full niche fandom with stories that native English speakers can't understand in a glance, have to put in an effort to interact with. Maybe I'll make memes in my language that none of my mutuals can get. But in the end, it will just be like shouting in the void.
Because here's a reality: most English speakers never put in the effort. They see a foreign language, and move away. And if, by some sort of miracle, they actually want to try, then they are lucky to be able to count on automated translation. Machine translation tools are always trained on English first. Any language > English usually is the pair that has the most reliable results. The same cannot exactly be said about English > any language. And again, I acknowledge that I'm priviledged in such a case, because I'm native of a language that is well-covered.
But it will never be enough for international fandom interactions. Another uncomfortable reality: the globalisation of fandoms has led to erasure of most other languages in fan spaces. This one's going to be hard to reclaim.
So I adapt and I speak English and I write in English. Sometimes I read fanfics and I cry, because I stumbled upon a sentence that I know, even with the best efforts in the world, I would have never managed to come up with. Sometimes I realise that between my job and my fandom activities, English has become such a huge part of my life that I'm losing my own mother tongue, that my phrasing is becoming awkward in it too. I'm not confident anymore using it. I look at the sentence I wrote on the blank page and I cry some more.
And I'm so, so tired of seeing "well-meaning" entitled native English speakers (and, no offense, but most happen to be from the USA, so there might be something cultural at hand here, but while I feel legitimate to observe languages, I don't think I have the legitimacy to observe societies) trying to hold everyone in the world up to their self-centred standards.
I speak English because you speak English. Speak my language flawlessly, and then we'll talk about my flaws when speaking yours.

60 with Lo'ak x reader? I put in 1-101 on a generator and this came up three times so i think it's a sign PFFT
it just feels right for lo'ak to have this with someone, kind of like Ronal and Tonowari speaking with their eyes basically!! reader can be omaticaya or metkayina , whatever you deem fitting :)
Tumblr media
#60: In Sync/Wordless Conversations
Pairing: Lo'ak x Fem!Metkayina!Reader
Warnings: Language, fluff, time skips
Na'vi Words: olo'eyktan - clan leader, tanhì - bioluminescent freckle, marui - home, sem'pul - father, maite - daughter, nivi - hammock, skxawng- moron, nantangtsyìp - dog (Earth animal)
A/N: Oh, hell yeah I love this sort of prompt. Wordless Conversations is definitely my love language. Do I love it because I'm terrible at vocally expressing my feelings and crave for someone to know me inside and out without prodding me for words? Shut up and lemme cope.
He had always struggled with saying what he meant, and he always said things he didn't mean. In his youth, he was Jakesully's troubled son, someone who wasn't Neteyam, the firstborn golden child. Being second in everything, Lo'ak couldn't live up to so many expectations being Toruk Makto's son, and so his communication skills were shit, to say the least.
Lo'ak knew Y/n would one day be his mate simply because no one understood him like she did, and she understood him without even asking.
From day one, when he first saw her emerge from the waters of Awa'atlu, their eyes met, blue on yellow, he knew he was done for. Those eyes stared into his very soul and read him from the inside out. He wasn't sure if it was even possible to keep a secret from her. During their very first interaction together, when Tsireya had properly introduced the pair, Lo'ak couldn't hold back what he was thinking, no matter how hard he tried to keep it to himself. One look from Y/n, and he was spilling his newly found secret, "Beautiful."
Day one and Y/n could See Lo'ak in ways that no one, not even his family, could see.
~~~
It was safe to say that Lo'ak could See Y/n, too. After he had called her beautiful, their interactions were cute, shy, and flirtacious. Y/n would help Tsireya, Rotxo, and Ao'nung teach the Sully children their ways in between her chores. Nearly every time she walked up to their little group, Lo'ak is the first to spot her, and every time he grins and calls out, "She's back!"
"I am. And how are you, Lo'ak?" She rolled her eyes, despite smiling.
"Same as yesterday. You didn't stay away long," his grin was attractive, fangs sparkling in the sun, and looked as though he knew the secrets of the universe, "You just can't get enough of me, can you?"
"Please make him shut up," Ao'nung snarled under his breath, addressing it to only Neteyam who stood beside him.
~~~
Even before learning the sign language, Lo'ak was able to See Y/n. While Tsireya is using hand gestures to speak to the Sully kids in the water, Y/n spoke to Lo'ak with her eyes. They swam close together, weaving through the coral reefs as they explored the sea life around them.
Lo'ak had reached out to touch a particular fish that glowed green, but one glance in Y/n's direction beore he had done so made him pause.
She didn't move her hands or even shake her head to tell him 'no'. Her eyes, staring through Lo'ak's soul, said what he needed to know. 'Stings.'
He moves away from the fish, swimming closer to her instead, eyes bright and eyebrows raised in her direction. He was smiling with his eyes, and even through his eyes, he was grinning. 'Worried for me?'
She rolled her eyes in response, and his own crinkled as his way of laughing. He didn't miss the way her ears darkened a shade of teal.
~~~
Payakan was his Spirit Brother and Lo'ak would defend him, even against a mighty olo'eyktan like Tonowari. However, even Y/n knew when enough was enough, fearing her clan leader more than Lo'ak did in that moment of stupidity. From over Tonowari's shoulder, Lo'ak caught Y/n's gaze, and with one look, her ears pinned back to emphasize the warning, Lo'ak closed his mouth.
~~~
Quaritch had grabbed Y/n by the throat and all Lo'ak could see was red. He lashed out, hissing and baring his teeth, struggling against the orange cuffs. He was so preoccupied with insulting the Recom with every bit of foul language known to Na'vi that he nearly missed Y/n's eyes flicking in his direction, her second pair of lids wiping away the salt water that was her tears. Lo'ak noticed, anger slowly calming as he stared back at her. It was obvious she was afraid, and much like how you would try to appear smaller when calming a scared cat, Lo'ak did just that. He stopped struggling against his restraints, closing his mouth to hide the fangs away. Ears resting in a more natural position, Lo'ak made sure to keep Y/n's beautiful eyes on him. His gaze softened once she slowly began to calm herself, eyes blinking slowly as she caught her breath. Lo'ak smiled at her and nodded with encouragement. 'Do not be afraid.'
After they escaped, Lo'ak gathered her in his arms. Gently cupping both sides of her face in his hands, he stared her down with one glance, 'Okay?'
She nods, sinking into his embrace and hiding her face away in his chest.
~~~
With one tilt of her head, his tail swayed in response, betraying his thoughts as he watched the way her smile twinkled and their eyes met again. The tilt of her head was pointed in the direction of the jungle behind the village, and after the communal meal, Lo'ak found himself following Y/n there, without a verbal invitation needed.
She was leaning against a tree, facing him when he broke through the heavy foliage. Expectedly, he waltzed over to her, eyes never leaving hers as she tilts her chin up to follow his height. They stood so close now, sharing the same air as the sky darkened and the fauna around them began to glow, igniting both Omatikaya and Metkayina tanhì like constellations. Lo'ak knew what she wanted without ever saying a word. Leaning in, he did what she had asked and kissed her.
~~~
It wasn't their first fight, but for Lo'ak, everything with Y/n felt like the first time. They had been mated for three years up until this point, three years of gaining more tribal tattoos, being one of the Metkayina, and lying in a hammock that was meant for two with the most beautiful woman in the world.
He couldn't remember what the fight was about, but between his pride and Y/n's stubbornness, it was safe to say that both of them could have easily been the cause of it. After the argument, Lo'ak left to cool his thoughts. He had already said some things he didn't mean (as always, it was still a bad habit) and struggled to say the things he wanted to say. He couldn't bare to stay any longer knowing he could do something he would sincerely regret. After a few hours to relax and recollect his thoughts, he returned. Y/n was still in their marui and didn't bother looking up when he entered. She keeps her head facing away from him and purposely pinned her ears back. 'No, I don't want to talk to you.'
He understands clearly. Trying his best not to touch her, he pulled a strand of her hair behind her ear and left to go hunting with Ao'nung, Rotxo, and Neteyam. He had stayed in his parents' marui that night.
After he returned the next morning, Y/n was still there, though her posture had definitely relaxed and her mood had shifted. She stood up and moved out of her husband's way so that he could get what he needed to be ready for the day. When he turned to leave again, she cleared her throat. Right, how could he have forgotten? Lo'ak turned on his heels and fit himself in front of his wife, planting a parting kiss on her lips and reveling the smile she bore as he left.
~~~
Almost every night it was like this, their little girl begging to stay up late because all her older cousins get to.
"Sem'pul, can I please stay up with you?"
Her eyes were even bigger than Tuk's when she was that age. Lo'ak was ready to give in until he saw the way Y/n looked at him behind their daughter's back, "Of co-- Actually, maite. I just remembered how I'm not feeling well and should probably get some sleep."
"Oh, no! You have to rest, Dad! I can tuck you in."
"That would make me feel so much better, baby. Thank you."
Y/n smiled with her eyes, nodding with approval as she moves to join the two in their family-size nivi. Lo'ak was nearly smothered with the little girl nestled in his chest and the woman pressed comfortably at his side, but he wouldn't want it any other way.
~~~
Ao'nung's son? With Lo'ak's daughter? Hell fucking no! What is that skxawng thinking?!
Lo'ak makes one step toward the son of the olo'eyktan only for Y/n to step in front of her mate, keeping his line of sight strictly on her. She stares up at him with half-lidded eyes and a sweet -if not amused- smile. Both smile and eyes now had soft wrinkles in the corners, and her hair wasn't as dark as it used to be. But, like before, time with Y/n was always like the first time, and nothing had changed except for their age and the fact that Ao'nung's son wished to court Lo'ak's daughter!
The thought brings anger back into Lo'ak's eyes that Y/n quickly stamped down with a glare of her own, her amusement forgotten in replace of forcing her husband to sit down with just one look. Kiri had watched the scene with amusement, muttering "Walk him like a nantangtsyìp, Y/n," loud enough for Lo'ak to hear it and snap his teeth at her.
At least Ao'nung was just as displeased as Lo'ak was when he found out about it. Finally, they agreed on something. However, everyone knew that Lo'ak was wrapped around his baby's fingers, and eventually, he welcomed the chief's son into their family after his daughter exclaimed, "I want what you and Mom have!"
He couldn't argue with that.

so since @i-bring-crack gave me the idea now I’m having a brainrot so here we are
‘Tired salaryman transmigrates into other world, decides to chill and accidentally completes the main quest without knowing so’, the thread
- jinchul is your average day to day salaryman who’s exceptional in his field but his life is so repetitive and boring he rarely questions what he does daily, even on weekends he mostly sleeps or works because there’s nothing else to do (he’s like me fr—)
- one night he was returning home after a really hard day at work, one of very few instances where he overworked even by his own standards. he was sleepy and tired enough not to notice moon being too bright and shadows dancing at weird angles around him. he did feel like someone was watching him whole way home so he sped up his walking and that’s exactly how he accidentally fell through one of shadows after stepping on it
- he doesn’t remember everything after that that much, but next thing he knows is that he’s laying in a comfortable bed. then apparently he wakes up in a strange room that kinda looks something straight out of historical drama but also something out of those isekai fantasy novels teenagers love to read. which is even more confusing when a man enters the room. that’s when jinchul realizes he has no idea what language this man speaks.
- apparently after several hours of struggling to communicate mostly through sign language and awkward drawings/sketches, jinchul more or less understands that he’s either sleeping after overworking too much or he’s really been thrown into other world (time??) without any knowledge. Go Gun-Hee (as he suspects man’s name is because he pointed at himself and said it several times) was nice enough to host poor man with amnesia and so is his wife. jinchul is a man of gratitude and considering his position he’s more than happy to help around their estate for sheltering him while also borrowing language books from their library. thank god his company made him learn several languages for business reasons.
- after some time jinchul is able to read and talk in their language so living becomes slightly better. history books of this world provide more context so yes, he’s apparently in some kind of different world where magic exists. he should freak out by this point but honestly when freaking out helped in any situation. there’s whole kingdom, there’s local religion, there’s so much he actually needs to memorize. jinchul is actually glad basic accounting rules from his world work here too so with time jinchul becomes gunhee’s accountant.
- jinchul hates coffee but only after arriving here and seeing there’s no such thing as coffee, jinchul realizes he might’ve been a caffeine addict. there was a solid month where he suffered drawback from its absence and it was impossible to even get up from bed. he hates coffee still but he misses it because now all tiredness crushes down on him in one go
- weirdly enough this world does have something akin to coffee beans but no one knows what do with them. just to test out jinchul buys some (under merchant’s questionable stare) and brews them. turns out it tastes almost exactly like coffee, just less bitter and less caffeine. jinchul’s opportunistic mind started to turn gears in his head.
- through some time jinchul now owns a famous shop, only one in whole country to sells and serves coffee related stuff. he’s more than happy with his arrangement, plus he has his own independent income and more free time to visit gunhee and his wife. he also isn’t that healthy (because honestly who’s he to sell coffee at astronomical price like it was back in his world) but he earns enough for living.
- one evening right before closing his shop is visited by a man. jinchul tenses because there’s something familiar about his presence. something from back from his world. something at last moment before he fell here. even is said man is actually nice, just a little stone faced, jinchul is still on high alert. rightfully so because room feels smaller and darker and he can swear he can feel phantom of a cold hand on his neck. it’s suffocating and for the first time here jinchul actually fears for his life.
- man leaves but occasionally returns from time to time to test different coffee and sweets combinations. there’s nothing much happening but jinchul is always uncomfortable. there’s something threatening but not actively so.
- during one of such visits jinchul is absolutely baffled when this unknown man visits his shop again and gifts him rare calming herbal tea leaves and best brand of kingdom’s chocolate. in exchange he asks for best cup of coffee and best desert jinchul can offer. through observations jinchul offers man’s favorites and was right because now everything is less suffocating and stiffening and for some reason jinchul feels like he passed some sort of test. it’s also the evening jinchul finally learns man’s name - sung jinwoo.
- after that it becomes a routine. jinwoo became non hostile and more approachable (as well as being the one to approach) and jinchul uses it as a chance to have a stable source of information about this world.
- (also because I’m a weak dumbass) jinwoo actually remembering when jinchul’s birthday is (even if he mentioned it only once in passing) at night of said birthday jinwoo ungracefully (even if he wanted it to be graceful) falls through jinchul’s window waking him up. jinwoo snatches barely awake jinchul to his palace to celebrate. jinchul is grateful and but also tired and sleepy so it’s mostly a nice late dinner, a present (magically enhanced ring) and a sleepy good night kiss. jinwoo is so shook he just touches his cheek and awkwardly leaves to sleep in a guest room since jinchul fell asleep in his room. once he’s in bed realization crushes down on him. apparently the most fearsome shadow monarch is deeply in love with a destined one to supposedly murder him. jinwoo’s own plan backfired spectacularly.
- jinwoo’s plan: snatch destined one into their world before church can summon him - let him live here for some time and observe him - approach him with malicious intent to see his reaction - if attacks then murder, if not then make him attached - make destined one attached and be in good relationship to keep a close eye on him so he can strike first in case of murder intent - accidentally become the one attached and fall in love with destined one - wait what???

Hi! I am currently learners French and I was wondering if you have any tips or something to help 😭😭😭
Hellooo! Learning french for me was definitely an uphill battle and I would say the type of thing that gets harder before it gets easier. Just for context on my personal situation learning French: I took french all the way through high school, studied super duper hard for the B2 exam and then managed to pass. It was through this that I was able to apply to french universities and got accepted at Sorbonne University where ALL my courses are french. Being at a french school, having to read advanced texts practically every day, and of course living in Paris - I reached C1 (and this took me about a year and a half). Please take this into consideration in terms of setting realistic goals for yourself. Here are my tips for fluency:
1.) Read A LOT!!! Through reading you’ll be able to see french grammar in context, the general structure of the language, figures of speech, and of course expand vocabulary. It goes without saying that learning a language is learning a culture - there are many faucets of francophone culture expressed through literature which provide helpful insight for non francophones. Here are my recommendations according to language level.
Beginner (A1-A2)
Le Petit Prince d’Antoine de Saint-Exupéry - this is a stable of french culture and very simple children’s novella to read. A book every French child has read.
Le Petit Nicolas - another children’s book which I think gives really good insight into french upbringing, and primary school experience. I found it to be a stark contrast from anything that I had experienced.
Any thing from Français Facile, as you reach A2 the focus will be more on basic grammar and I find those books to be quite good in terms of the hyper specificity that requires, ie if you’re learning imparfait vs passé composé there is probably a book tailor made for that.
Intermediate (B1-B2):
French translation of originally [insert your first language]. I know this may seem strange, but I think it’s a helpful in between step to see how your language translates into french, and I found generally it was easier to read weirdly?? (As someone who was reading a lot of English to French translations, guess is that since the translation is limited to English lexicon which is smaller than french, the translation itself would be a much simpler version of french lol). This can be any book, as long as it’s at your reading level in your native tongue
L’étranger d’Albert Camus
Le peintre de la vie moderne de Charles Baudelaire
Manette Salomon des frères Goncourt
Magazines, newspapers, journals!! Again great insight into francophone culture and current affairs.
At B2 level you should be able to read anything, so anything you can get your hands on, READ!
2.) Study the grammar. Get it down. All the laborious things (gender of nouns, use of subjonctif, conditional tense, COD/COI, etc, etc) — learn it and master. This cannot be skipped, you cannot cut corners in this regard. Put your head down and do it.
3.) Once you’ve gotten to A2/B1 — speak as much as possible. If there are conversation classes available, go to them. Try to find people online to practice with if IRL is not an option but it is important to practice speaking.
4.) Listen to French music, watch french language films. There’s french music in all genres and music taste is super subjective lol. I personally love the music from the 60s/70s - Jacques Brel, Serge Gains, Jane B, Francoise Hardy, Michel Legrand, Barbara (my recommendations lol). Of course if you’re not into that there’s pop, rap, Afro beats, classical, etc., etc. My favourite french films are Cléo 5 à 7, La Piscine, Le Samouraï, Les demoiselle de Rochefort, La Religieuse, La Chinoise, Plein Soleil— just a few that come to mind. Of course taste is super subjective, so just find what you like!
There are all my tips for learning french (or really any language). Hope it was helpful!!

"𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩'𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙞𝙧 𝙚𝙩𝙝𝙣𝙞𝙘𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙨𝙚𝙭𝙪𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙮?"
what is the unO main cast's ethnicity's and sexualities?
Sera
bi queen
the head of the bisexuals actually
perfect arc sera probably had a hint that she liked girls but shoved it so down into her soul that pretty much no one would've guessed
she probably tried forcing herself to like arlo but that lasted for like 30 minutes at best...
during cripple john, she probably didn't really care about her sexuality, only being able to finally admit she liked girls.
she's not in the closet anymore really, she just doesn't tell anyone about it unless they specifically ask.
she's never brought up anything sexuality related with her parents. leilah did once and it didn't go over very smoothly.
her childhood gay awakening was shego from kim possible
she's russian but lived in the U.S. for her entire life
she doesn't speak the language but can understand certain common words and learned multiple swear words from leilah when they were kids
John
omnisexual brat
he never really cared about the genders of people he liked
he'd just see someone and think they were hot, regardless of what they presented themselves as.
though, i think his kryptonite is most definitely boobs
he blushes pretty much whenever a pretty girl talks to him
when he was younger he had the teenest, tinest crush on zirian for like two months or so
but it quickly went out the window once he dethroned him
he also may have a thing for people stronger than him, both ability wise and physical wise
he was never really in the closet so to speak, he once asked his dad if it was normal to like both guys and girls and william was the most supportive dad ever about it all
he makes jokes that make it obvious he likes guys as well, but he'll only specifically state his sexuality when asked about it.
his childhood gay awakening was shang from Mulan.
he's half-german half-american, at least thats what his dad tells him
he only really considers himself american since he doesn't know his mom
william tried both learning german himself and teaching it to john but john got bored so fast that it was a complete waste of time
like sera, he knows a few swear words and will just shout them out randomly
Arlo
bi king
so far into the closet its actually insane
at least he's well dressed (unlike a certain joker cough cough)
he definitely didn't understand anything about being gay or whatever. his parents aren't too conservative but they definitely didn't teach nor tell him anything about same sex love, and not in a positive light anyway.
he barely had any girl crushes and almost never any guy crushes, so he didn't even think about his sexuality at all.
until he entered wellston and became a little too involved with a certain blue haired king (fly high rei)
he gay panicked so hard the first time he saw rei without a shirt on, like his entire body malfunctioned and started convulsing.
till tomorrow, he'll never come out. he might have some internalized homophobia and be concerned about how the people closest to him might view him, especially his aunt.
the closet is sealed shut and bulletproof at this point
his childhood gay awakening was both aladdin and prince eric
he's french and has all the audacity of a parisian
he speaks the language pretty fluently already and takes french class at wellston for the easy grade.
he lived in Paris until he was 7 and learned to suppress his accent a lot, though it comes out whenever he's extremely pissed.
he just screams in a raspy parisian accent and its either extremely hot or viscerally terrifying depending on who you ask
Remi
pansexual girlboss
she loves everyone with no preference at all
shes always just been really non-judgemental about everything and so kind
"omg he's so cute! wait he's non-binary? omg they're so cute!"
like John, she'd just see someone and think they were cute, regardless of their gender
she remembers having her first crush on a girl at 13.
remi: mom, can i start dating yet?
mama lightning: ABSOLUTELY NOT! no boys until you're 30!
remi: ...well do I have news for you
speaking of girl crushes, I think the wellston lesbians love her. like, she's friendly, pretty, and strong to the point where its intimidating but not absolutely terrifying.
evie probably wrote fanfics about her and posted them on ao3
this sweetiepie also might've had a crush on perfect arc seraphina for about a month, but she quickly got over it once she saw just how different their idealogies and personalities were.
her childhood gay awakening was calhoun from wreck it ralph
her parents are both canadians and she made trips to both vancouver and quebec to visit family very regularly.
she picked up a little quebecois and tried speaking it to arlo. she still remembers the absolute look of disdain he gave her.
Blyke
demisexual malewife
he never felt anything like love at first sight, even towards remi
it takes a lot for him to begin liking someone, even platonically. he isn't the nicest guy and wasn't all that interested in making many friends, especially very surface level ones.
that said, he didn't really think much of it. his sexuality wasn't ever really on his mind.
it wasn't until remi that he knew what it meant to really, truly like someone. from the way they blinked to the way they breathed.
it was like his eyes were opened for the first time in a long, long while.
that said, he was low-key kinda afraid to tell his mom about it.
he just didn't want it to change anything, didn't know if it was important enough that he should even waste his time on telling her.
but when he did finally, it didn't go how he expected.
blyke: mom, I think I'm like, demisexual... or something...
blyke's mom: demisexual and still can't get a boyfriend nor a girlfriend? bless your heart
blyke: that's not even what it's.... y'know what? idk why I bother
his childhood gay awakening was Danny from Danny phantom
WHAT THE FUCK IS A KILOMETER?!?!? 🦅🦅🦅
american born and raised in the mid-west
he was really confused the first time isen came over to his dorm and blyke slapped his hands on his knees and said "welp, guess it getting past my bedtime." and the dumbass responded with "it's like 7:00, are you a child?"
he then reverted to saying get the fuck out
Isen
queer prick
the most non-committal person to ever exist
went on a tangent about how "gender and sexuality constructs make people feel inclined to label themselves as something to fit into the boxes society sets up for them-"
blyke started fake snoring just to piss him off.
he's out of the closet only to his close friends like remi and blyke
his parents are conservative so he pretty much assumes that they wouldn't support him.
he isn't as upset about it as he was when he first figured it out, he guesses that's just how the world works, and he got the short end of a straw.
he's gay panic personified. he kinda thought arlo was hot after the fork incident, but it multiplied by like 100x when his growth spurt hit.
he's equal parts terrified and equal parts enamored.
same thing with cecile, there's no way he didn't show up to the press club on his first day, get absolutely berated by cecile for a shit article he showed her, and then came back for more the next day.
for some reason I always saw him as latino.
like he'd just randomly start cursing people (arlo) under his breath in spanish.
blyke will ask him for notes and he'll say okay just to write it all in spanish.
blyke: what the fuck is this dude. you fucking know I cant understand this shit
isen: sounds like a skill issue

At what point of not being able speak did you consider yourself nonverbal?
this is a difficult question to answer. emotionally difficult (because this topic is hard to think about and i have strong feelings but i don't know what they are). and difficult because words are really hard, and memory is not reliable.
i will do my best. this answer will be long and rambly because i feel the intense need to be as clear as possible. this makes me very very anxious. (sorry in advance for how long).
i can't give an exact timeline because i don't barely have awareness of time. i also can't fully trust/rely on my memory. it gets twisted and muddled and fuzzy. i will try to stick to what i know is fact true.
i still have the same language issues of my whole life, so i never know if the words match my meaning!! it is very stressful when i know i wrote things in the past and have to "correct" past self. i have written a lot on this topic because i really want to be able to explain it to people - but a lot of what i wrote isn't actually true or correct. not because i intentionally lie, just because i simply don't have enough ability for words. especially when it is all this complex.
firstly to clarify, my speech my whole life was never good. reasons is combination of several things:
unreliable speech (intend to say one thing, another come out. or intend to say nothing, and something come out) because body not fully under my control
compulsive scripting because it was LOUD in my brain and got pushed out without meaning/wanting
language issues meaning i said words that didn't match up to what i meant (even when i was trying and was more in control of mouth). i didn't understand the words coming out my mouth.
language issues meaning i could only speak in learned/memorised scripts. occasionally from my own mind, majority "borrowed" from other people. i knew how to match a script with a situation or question, but i didn't comprehend what the script meant so i very often said the opposite of what i was thinking/feeling. (sometimes i knew words and my meaning didn't match but i didn't have the right words. and if i had nothing else to say my body would take over and blurt out whatever script was closest to the brain-to-mouth track).
smaller periods of skill regression that happened often throughout my childhood. affecting lots of skills and areas (not everything all at once, more like repeated backsliding in each skill/area, usually when i focused on bettering a different skill/area. brain just doesn't have capacity). this including affecting speech and communication.
i have said in the past that my speech declined over a long period, and even said an age range. but honestly i don't know how true that is. my memory could be really screwing with me, so i can't say that for certain. i just know it was always bad, and then it got worse.
i think i was 16 nearly 17 when the big change came with my speech, because of regression. i had other skill regression, but speech was the biggest most obvious affected area. i can't describe how it happened or what it was like. i have tried in the past, but like i have said, it is mostly not accurate despite my attempts.
other people can describe about what it seemed from the outside, but i often get upset hearing that because it sounds so different from my experience/reality. logically i know it is true that it looked that way to someone else seeing the outside of me - but my brain can't accept it as truth because it won't fit in with what i know about my internal experience. so brain rejects it as "lie".
growing up before the big regression, i had a strange and complicated experience with speech and communication. back then, i never put any specific word to it. i just knew it was so so so hard. and so so so upsetting.
during the period where my experience of speech changed due to the big regression, i was searching around for words to "borrow" to try help explain what was going on. for both myself and parents. that is when i learned about words nonverbal, nonspeaking, semiverbal/semispeaking, etc.
but still i didn't think any of it really fit. i have used the word "semiverbal" to try put label on my growing up experience of speech, but it still even now doesn't seem right.
i didn't use word nonverbal or nonspeaking for myself until my speech was 100% gone, no intelligible words. and then i first only used it online, simply because it is a quick easy one-word way to explain "i can't speak at all". and i always gave expand information on my exact situation of late regression and losing speech - i felt like i was "lying" if i didn't.
but - your question was at what point i consider myself nonverbal. and that part took longer, i think. when my speech went away from regression, i had the strong intense gut feeling that it was permanent and never coming back. and the feeling got stronger especially as it kept getting worse and worse despite me trying harder and harder every day.
but of course i didn't know anything for sure. and not knowing anything for sure was too much for brain to handle all at once, so a lot of it got shut off and put away to deal with later.
there was a LOT going on and a LOT of change from this big regression. and brain took a long time to process it. and even more time to understand and process feelings around it. i am still processing and tackling this, even now!
so for a long while, i simply thought of it as "i cannot speak", "i am unable to speak". because that was the easiest and simplest way to think of it. and it fit into what my brain already knew of my experiences, so it didn't feel like "lie" that brain would reject.
the word nonverbal was there in my mind during all this, but i felt upset and not good feelings any time i even wondered about it. (i think guilty, and very anxious, is what i felt around it?). i worried that i was not allowed. i worried that i would get in trouble.
like i said before, i can't give the exact timeline. but i know it took a while before it felt okay-ish and semi-comfortable to use the word nonverbal. only once my speech was 100% fully gone and my strong intense gut feeling that it is permanent was still there, still just as strong.
the only chance i have of gaining any speech back ever, is perhaps occasional one-word echolalia, out of my control. if i ever verbally say a word again, it cannot be intentional or in my control. i say that with strong certainty - not only based on gut feeling but also past experiences (of speech growing up, and how it felt losing it fully).
i hope this is satisfactory answer. and again i apologise for how long and rambly. it is important to me to always try be as clear as i am able. i have an intense compulsion to tell the complete truth all the time, and i get very upset when my poor language ability messes that up.
have a nice day :)

Humans are like tape recorders.
To all language learners out there drilling grammar structures (and vocab to a lesser extent), I have some bad news. No matter how much you rote learn or memorise, you can’t say something* in a language if you haven’t already heard it said by someone else, many times.
In order for you to say something, you must have recorded it in your brain first.
Tumblr media
The reason for this is twofold.
If you haven’t seen or heard something actually used, how are you meant to know how it’s used!? Gonna go out on a limb and say not many people here are able to speak Pirahã. How would you say “I just drank some water” in Pirahã? You don’t know, right? Because you’ve never heard it said! In this respect, a language that you can’t speak at all is no different from a language that you can speak a bit, or even a language you’re fluent in.
Memorising stuff out of a textbook or flash cards is not sufficient to count as “hearing something many times”. It’ll give you some examples, but not enough (especially if what you’re memorising is the grammar structure itself, and not example sentences). Your conscious thought processes (which includes looking things up in long term memory) are simply too slow to be effective if they need to be used more than once every few seconds during conversation. Rote memorisation works at the conscious thought level, and is therefore only useful as a supplemental tool. Hearing something actually spoken (many times) internalises it on the subconscious level, which is what is needed for fluid speech and comprehension.
*That’s not to say that it’s impossible to ever say anything original. When I say you need to hear something before being able to use it correctly yourself, I mean you need to hear sentence structures and words, not necessarily whole sentences like a script.
Our brains are very, very efficient at acquiring language, provided we give them a non-stop stream of data to record (this is how babies learn - they don’t need textbooks). Then, the brain can cut up the tapes, analyse patterns, paste separate tapes together, and allow us to speak in our target language without manually recalling from memory.
Tumblr media
What does this mean for you, the language learner? Put down the textbook and watch as much content in your target language as possible. Use the textbook/dictionary to help you look up something you’ve heard if you can’t figure something out from context, but that’s all it should be used for. Watch youtube, kids shows, regular tv, news, podcasts, anything you can find. And never use subtitles in your native language! Your brain will turn off the tape recorder automatically if it sees an easier way it can parse the information.
In this video, Matt (from the youtube channel Matt vs Japan) says the following, which I have translated to English:
こういうアドバイスする時に一番反論として出てくるのが 「でも観てもわからない!」 だから 「できない」 っていうんだけど、わからないからこそ観るべきだよね --- When I give the advice [to go hard on consuming input], the biggest counterargument people have is “When I watch it, I can’t understand what they’re saying! So it doesn’t work.” but it's actually the opposite: you don’t understand it, therefore you need to watch it!
The reason you should watch it is you don't understand it! You can’t understand it until your brain has recorded it!

My Favorite Manga in 2023: Part 2
Like in part 1 I will skip the titles I already covered in previous roundups.
女の園の星 (Onna no Sono no Hoshi), Yama Wayama
初恋、ざらり (Hatsukoi, Zarari), Zaku Zakuro
うちのクラスの女子がヤバい (Uchi no Class no Joshi ga Yabai), Seiko Erisawa [Ichi-nen Ichi-gumi omnibus edition]
インターネット・ラヴ! (Internet Love!), Kiko Urino
レイニー通りの虹 (Rainy Doori no Niji), Keiko Fukuyama
葬送のフリーレン (Frieren: Beyond Journey's End), Kanehito Yamada & Tsukasa Abe
Yama Wayama appears to be on a continuous upwards trajectory as the manga comedienne of the reiwa era which I got to confirm for myself with the hit Onna no Sono no Hoshi. The episodic comedy about a teacher daily terrorized by his students and coworker. And with the scanlation well on its way I just want to say please experience it for yourself.
Uchi no Class no Joshi ga Yabai I had eyed ever since I started learning Japanese and the new omnibus that coincided with the ongoing sequel series gave me a great reason to finally pick it up. Box of Light by the same author was on my list last year and I not only liked the premise of it but also loved the anthology format of the story. For similar reason I really liked Uchi no Class: In the world of the series high school aged girls may experience the activation of powers.... that are completely useless and troublesome. We follow the students of year one class one, a class infamous for always having the highest concentration of useless powers. Dreams projected into the sky, X-ray vision that turn everyone around you into terrifying anatomy models is only the tip of the iceberg. I can't resist a gimmick premise done successfully and the variation of characters and powers kept the premise fresh like older characters who haven't yet "grown out" of their powers or a trans girl storyline.
Hatsukoi, Zarari follows the young woman Arisa diagnosed with a light intellectual disability and autism. Living between jobs and having a hard time turning down men who only want to have sex she has always struggled with her own self worth. This is until she falls in love with an older coworker who is charmed by her personality and quirks. But will things change if she opens up about her diagnoses? Zaku Zakuro has made manga and shared online about living with ADHD and asperger syndrome, giving this story a very personal and different perspective focusing especially on how stigma around developmental disabilities can be what causes the most friction and pain.
Internet Love! is a love story for the social media age with a budding romance that goes across borders. Bisexual nail artist Tenma has for years been a fan of a completely ordinary man from Korea named Uno who appears to be addicted to posting his life on instagram, daily filling up his story until the posts are lined up like dots. Thinking he held nothing but a healthy distance of "standom" for Uno, but he instead hits rock bottom when his insta favorite posts a girlfriend reveal. Tenma no longer able to bring himself to open the daily insta stories sinks into a depression, but Uno takes note that a certain someone stopped checking up on him... I was instantly charmed by this and was especially taken by how their clumsy attempts at communication without being able to speak each others language or no lingua franca was portrayed and the personal styles and fashions of the characters I just adored the whole thing.

I have a request for Ivar relationship headcanons regarding s/o being a non-believer (vikings)
A/n: I may or may not have spoiled my long fic lol. This is fire
---------------------------------
Tumblr media
You could not have possibly picked a more challenging situation than this one.
Ivar can find a way for things to work in almost any situation. Heck, he could even deal with sharing under the right conditions. But faith is where he draws the line.
Even if he made a transgression by making himself a god, he is probably the most religious person there. Second only to Floki.
He learned almost everything from Floki, so he is very similar to him in that manner.
Unlike Floki, however, Ivar has no regard for faith if not his one.
If it was Ivar in Al-Ândaluz instead of Floki, he would have beheaded the praying men without a second guess.
You can be assured that whatever attracted him to his s/o is not their belief. Could be their looks, their prowess, intelligence, how they treat him, all of those and/or else.
Initially, Ivar considers his s/o faith to be a product of lies and misguidance from wherever they learned it from. He considers that by living among his people and seeing their might, his s/o will learn the true ways with the right time.
With this mindset, he’ll give them what he considers a reasonable timeframe and space for them to discover and experience his faith.
He’ll be eager to teach and guide them in his faith. It’s a way of bonding for him.
Ivar even has some curiosity for his s/o belief system, but that is because Ivar is a curious person, not because he would ever consider another belief system to be a valid one, much less convert to it.
He’ll have more tolerance if his s/o faith is anything but Christian, because he hates them with a passion. His tolerance is not forever tough.
The real problems arise when/if things get serious.
At the end of this unspoken time frame, he fully expects his s/o to have converted.
If they did, great! Smooth sailing.
If not, oh boy. Honeymoon is over.
His s/o will see a much less patient side from Ivar.
Ivar will confront them on why they still cling to their false beliefs.
If bad things happen he’ll blame that on his s/o disrespect to the gods.
Any problem in the relationship will be blamed on their faith. Related or not to it.
Ivar is not a man to give up easily, so he’ll do whatever is on his grasp to make his s/o change.
If his s/o faith involves images of any kind, those will be destroyed and forbidden.
Any rituals will be forbidden as well.
His s/o faith quite possibly involves a different language, and while Ivar would enjoy hearing sweet nothings, he will not allow them to if he believes that will be used to to follow another faith.
If even then his s/o refuses to convert, we are reaching a deal break situation here.
And if by some divine will he has a child with his s/o, the child will be raised under his faith. It’s a non-negotiable matter.
Ivar wants someone that will engage with him in his faith. That will participate in the rituals and that will strengthen his bond with the old ways.
Even if his s/o decided to just not speak about their religion, the norse practices will most likely clash at some point with their faith, so they would be faced with a hard dilemma.
Even if his s/o did not practice their faith, their refusal to accept his would be something that would slowly build up resentment for Ivar. It's something that is missing in their relationship and Ivar would not be able to find a middle ground like Ragnar was with Athelstan.
Eventually, push will come to shove and someone will have to give. It will not be him.
