On the spike thing, from my adventures in fanfiction, I think (?) spikes did start out more generally spike shaped, and there's been a general drift to them being more directly phallic

Found the finale interesting from the angle of Pike's character because I feel like they brought back some of his older, not yet necessarily seen in this show bc of the circumstances, flaws back from in Discovery.

Ash Tyler did not help himself with his conduct when interacting with Pike, but Pike's issues with Ash were not his conduct because they were shown Before Ash put a toe over the line. Pike said more about himself in regards to the Ash situation than anything else.

He can have very black and white views when he wants to. This person is bad, look at them, of course they're just bad. This species are just monsters, the end. The war is over, we have to practice tolerance and forgiveness now. Nothing is ever this simple. He knows that intellectually i think, but not deeply in his bones.

I thought the episode did a lot to contradict his blunt statements without being too obvious about it. Oh, the Gorn are just mindless monsters who will kill each other for dominance? Except they're working as a team while hunting. They're sending starfleet messages in languages they'll both understand and making clear terms for their interactions (or lack thereof). For all the show is taking inspo from the Alien franchise, they made sure to point out the gorn have their own spacesuits even, which threw me. They are a full society, with their own technology and culture.

They also happen to be parasitical when it comes to reproduction and very much carnivorous, and your friends are all on the menu.

I think by pushing the gorn into the sphere of the Xenomorph in Alien, pushing it into the realms of sci-fi horror, they're Really Really pushing and poking at starfleet ideals here. How far can we push harmony with other species just doing things as normal as eating and reproducing when that species kills us to eat and reproduce? Is it malice? Do we get to demand that they don't exist just because they're our natural predators?

I do actually like that they've deliberately made the Gorn way more horror story for this show. It opens up the story to ask questions that haven't been before in this specific way. It's a genuine moral debate to be discussed, it's a good question to see how far tolerance can be stretched when one subset's way of life does this to another's.

I do hope they go here, properly and textually, because it's been oh, 20 years and i'm still upset stargate fumbled the wraith so badly.

do you know how many people are mad that authors use "growled" as a word for "said"? it's just poetics! they do not literally mean "growled," it's just a common replacement for "said with force but in a low tone." it's normal! do you hear me!! help me i love you please let me out of here!!!

As gen-AI becomes more normalized (Chappell Roan encouraging it, grifters on the rise, young artists using it), I wanna express how I will never turn to it because it fundamentally bores me to my core. There is no reason for me to want to use gen-AI because I will never want to give up my autonomy in creating art. I never want to become reliant on an inhuman object for expression, least of all if that object is created and controlled by tech companies. I draw not because I want a drawing but because I love the process of drawing. So even in a future where everyone’s accepted it, I’m never gonna sway on this.

Sometimes I’m reminded that in universe Chilchuck is an actually influential figure who like. Made huge advancements for his people and community. Like as in gave them rights and protections. And who is widely known by half-foots because of that. Like. He’s not just some guy.

Idk For some reason that just makes his role in canon really funny to me. Like this older, extremely important and accomplished figure is just willingly putting himself thru it for the sake of this random autistic 26 year old.
