#it's an ask!

Just finished my bi-yearly reread of Professor and Student! I absolutely adore the story with all of my heart. It’s incredibly well done and contains so many wonderful complexities and character traits that I can’t help but think of as canon. To this day, it remains one of my favorite stories of all time, both within and outside of ao3. It really is amazing.

But I wanted to ask, in your mind, roughly what age is Ash? (In both P&S and Return).

I always assumed his age looked to be something like this.

Kanto - Johto : 10 - 11.5, Honen : 12, Sinnoh : 13, Unova : 14, Kalos : 15 and Alola : 16

Is it roughly the same for you? Or do you imagine him to be younger?

But that is a good question and within fics I prefer to leave my answer to "yeah, about that". Canon is crazy, so we let it vibe.

But because you buttered me up so nicely and gave me the out of instead saying how old he seems across the different series...

I generally agree, though the timeframes get wonkier as the series goes on. Unova-Kalos-Alola seem to occur over much shorter timeframes than Kanto-Johto, Hoenn, and especially Sinnoh.

Kanto is definitely about fourteen months (however much the writers don't want you to remember him specifically saying so), Orange islands plus Johto is probably another year (again, either don't take the Pikachu shorts as canon or ignore him saying it's an anniversary), Hoenn a year, and Sinnoh a year.

I often think of Unova and Kalos each lasting about eight months max, despite the called-out two month training montage in Unova, while Alola always feels more like six.

That said, based on actions and attitude, Ash definitely feels like an angry fourteen year old in Sinnoh, while in Kalos there's an overburdened sixteen year old vibe to him. So it kind of fits with the timeline.

Alola, however, definitely feels like a "yeah, about that", because it changes depending on who he's hanging out with and what he's doing.

Sophocles and Lana feel fourteen, Kiawe feels seventeen, Gladion is an edgy fifteen year old if ever I've seen one, height- and body-wise they all LOOK somewhere between ten and twelve... it's weird. They feel like 'generic high schoolers', so that's kind of what I headcanon them to be.

I do, however, appreciate how much that non-answer annoys people, so I'm sorry to everyone.

Being 30 is fun. I was discussing anime with a teen at work and asked her how much of bnha she had watched. She had trouble answering and wasn't sure how to approach it. I said "better question was who was your husbando" and she turned bright red before mumbling an answer. They never expect me to know how deep their love of anime boys runs....

tbh, love that you made tails’ adventure canon to your fic. this 8 year old has a body count and realistically like 3 or 4 people know aside from tails himself if rouge didn’t tell GUN. it’s only there to explain what he was doing while sonic was away and it’s kinda funny

This fluffy thing? Killer of hundreds? Weapons designer? Willing to build bombs and shoot guns and explode his enemies? Surely not!

Honestly, I love the dichotomy of Tails, and I think Tails Adventure is one of the best examples of it. He's adorable, and he's dangerous, and we should be very glad that he looks up to Sonic as his moral compass.

Though I'm sure a lot of the humans wish they both understood the cost of property damage, but hey! We take what we get!

i had a dream that time travel was invented and too many people choose to travel back in time to save the titanic from sinking (the question of whether unsinking of the titanic deserved so much attention in the face of human history was the subject of both heavy academic and online discourse), which caused a rift in the space-time-continuum that led to the titanic showing up indiscriminately all over the world’s oceans and sea in various states of sinking.

this caused a lot of issues both in terms of fixing said space-time-continuum and in terms of nautical navigation, and after a long and heavy battle in the international maritime organization it was decided that the bureaucratic burden of dealing with this was to be upon Ireland, much to their dismay. the Irish Government then released an app for all sailors and seafarers so they could report titanic sightings during their journeys, even though they heavily dissuaded you from reporting them given the paperwork it caused.

anyway i woke up with a clear image of the app in my head and needed to recreate it for all of you:

Mint literally lives rent free in my head, right down the road from the corner store (we literally have an introject of her. She showed up having flashbacks to the difficult part of the Mynt ending) so it seems rude to say it's a different character.

It would also be inaccurate, our top six in order are probably Mynt, Archie, Lana, Kade and probably Marei then Thelly.

I know you don't interact with Archie directly, but there's something about a sanctimonious priest who is trying to help make sure people who he believes to be irredeemable sinners have the best life they can for as long as they can regardless of what comes after, and it's because of some confusing conlmbination of actually just wanting to help people and wanting to feel more secure in himself because being gay(the main but not only sin in question) he relates to them heavily.

Meanwhile Thelly might be the only character in the whole game that isn't an unreliable narrator
