thinking about not only the specific people lucanis pulls in to represent the 'locks' in his psyche, but the storytelling that happens in the structure/order of them. the underlying ideas are presented something like:

the lucanis who went into the ossuary never came back out again; he died down there (the boy caterina raised is gone forever) -> you're putting yourself in danger doing this (by being close to me), you should leave because I can't bear it if you get hurt because of me -> it doesn't matter even if we do try this, it won't work anyway (again because of me) ('you know what he's like, you can open the door but he won't walk through it' :'( oofie doofie) -> what if the real secret is that there was never anything but the monster in here from the beginning. you should leave, there was never anything here worth saving in the first place. (implicitly: what if I deserved what happened, all along.)

it runs pretty cleanly from outward-oriented attachment anxiety ('caterina won't even want me back like this, she won't recognize me (the same way I no longer recognize myself)) and gradually deeper inwards until we reach self-image and self worth. or you know, the harrowing basic lack of it lol.

"careful -- they'll know we're not right," spite says in one of their first scenes... but clearly, some very deep part of lucanis has feared or suspected for much longer than that that there's something inherently not right at the core of him, way before any demon entered the picture. and the voice he gives those lines to is the person who should know him better than anyone in the world, who he has loved more than anyone in the world -- and who deliberately chose to hurt him so horrifically anyway. 'It's better if I'm just a monster and deserved what happened than it is to allow for the idea that the brother I love doesn't really exist and maybe never did'. it's better if he's fundamentally flawed in some way that needed fixing to help him survive, and that's why caterina chose to hurt him again and again -- out of love. (this one I think he might have a very sad wakeup call on one day if he ever ends up with the responsibility and care of a child of his own in some way and realizes just how alien the idea of ever intentionally hurting them for any reason is to him. oh buddy. also interesting that he keeps caterina as the outermost lock -- there IS a distance he keeps there that he hasn't with illario. he doesn't resent her 'anymore' he says, but he also keeps her carefully further away from his deepest self.)

as far as I could tell the only note in the mind prison that's fully hidden and needs to be uncovered is the sad painful helpless stupid little truth that even after all this, even knowing what happened... he still loves his brother. is there anything illario could ever do that would make lucanis completely stop loving him, do you think? sometimes the trouble with unconditional love is that it is, well. unconditional, even when some terms and conditions probably would have been in order haha.

that's the pattern you see there again and again; he would rather destroy and abandon and imprison himself at every turn than let go of love, even when it's just scraps, even when there's only ever enough of it to hurt him. it's only when rook shows up and as it were takes his hand and walks along with him that he can entertain the idea of changing the story of what walking out the door might mean in the end.

Curly's little blurb on his steam trading card just keeps reminding me he is a much more miserable person than people realize.

We don't get a lot of his thoughts, inner confliction that aren't bogged down by what Jimmy says or does. Even in the The Last One and Then Another, his dialogue is reflective, not the Curly before the crash but the result of everything. Parts of the him he was are there of course, but also disfigured and warped beyond recognition just like he is physically.

Curly really doesn't think much of himself and desires. He clearly chases fleeting moments of happiness. He doesn't really have prospects for himself, assumes in a similar way to Swansea, that if it should make it happy then he is happy. Though, he hasn't reached the point Swansea did to admit it doesn't. He neither sees the glass half full or empty, it's just water, something he needs and he'll take it from any perspective.

He wasn't running from anything but he's never really been going towards something either. He's listless. I've been using the term complacent to describe how he feels about his life and the closest people (really just Jimmy) in it, but now that word feels too neutral, too nice. Happier than Curly really was. There isn't just one word for it, he's unfulfilled, uncertain, uninspired. There are no active problems he faces and that's the issue, why should he be upset?

I believe he really is a person who doesn't know who he is or wants to be. He follows a structure. I don't think he's suicidal, but he clearly doesn't think about what makes him happy. He's numb. I suppose that is a better word than complacent, used to the feeling even if he hates it. It doesn't hurt so why stop it?

I love everyone's outfits in Scarlett Hollow (especially Kaneeka's) so I wanted to ask how do you go about designing multiple outfits for each character that are different yet still fit that characters general aesthetic. Also do you have a favorite/least favorite outfit.

Designing outfits is definitely not something that came very naturally to me at the start of Scarlet Hollow, but I've been gettin' the hang of it as I go-- I'd say a lot of it is about the vibe. I sketch a new outfit, and if it feels like they're in a costume, I scrap it. Color in particular gets tricky... one color can throw off a whole look and make them feel like their aura is off. Picking a palette in advance is a good idea!

I think it's mostly about understanding your character and the kinds of choices they make; Kaneeka cares a lot about how others view her, so she presents as very put-together, thus her outfits are always a little complicated and carefully constructed. Whereas Stella is laid back and probably hates having to think about what she's wearing, so she goes with roughly the same combination of jeans and a t shirt every day.

More of my rules for each main character under the cut! Minor spoilers for Scarlet Hollow:

I answered a similar question during an AMA, so I'm paraphrasing from those answers~

Stella: her shirt must match the theme of the episode while also being a believable cryptid/folklore t shirt design. She has a red/neutral theme, plus jeans. Butch sense of fashion with casual sensibilities.

Kaneeka: is a nu-goth, so no corsets or elaborate frills, and no techno-goth or scene/emo accoutrements. Her emo days are far behind her... so now she wears all black, no color besides her red braids, with interesting clothing shapes and the occasional lace or metallic accent. This is pretty close to how I dress so I just think about if it's something I would wear.

Oscar: he's a professional! So suits and button-ups, except his undershirt episode. He has a tan/yellow theme with unsaturated red accents, which he shares with his daughter Rosalina. His outfits are the toughest to mix up, because he dresses nice for work and only owns one suit. But I try to get creative where I can!

Avery: a plant theme, which includes mostly greens, with some purples, oranges, and earthy yellow allowed. Definitely has the widest palette, since they have to have interesting patterned button-ups. Can have a coat if needed, always tan, and nice dress pants that have a little bit of a bellbottom.

Reese: Wears whatever. A vague blue theme. Nothing looks like it fits him right. I have given him a cool jacket for Episode 5, but I can't post that sprite... too spoiler.......

Regulus pushes open the door of the Astronomy Tower and he hears James before he sees him. He follows the sound of soft sniffles and finds James sitting on the floor in a dark corner. His knees are pulled to his chest, his forehead is resting on top of them and his hands are clasps on the ground below them.

Regulus moves slowly and slides down the wall to sit beside James. He reaches out to lay his hand on James’ arm and James flinches at the movement. Regulus knows what that means so he moves his hand to James’ hair instead. He runs his fingers through James’ hair and leans in to kiss his temple.

“I’m here, okay.” Regulus whispers with his lips still brushing James’ temple. “I’m right here.”

James’ sniffles start to turn into a soft cry. “I messed up.” He says between hiccups as his cries turn into quiet sobs.

“Hey.” Regulus shuffles even closer to James and wraps his arm around his shoulders. “You did not mess up—"

“Yes, I did.” James cuts him off and lifts his head to look at Regulus, tears flowing freely down his cheeks. “I failed, Regulus. I thought I was getting better, but I messed it all up.”

Regulus moves his hands so he can cup both of James’ cheeks and look at him directly. “You did not mess up. This is not a failure. This isn’t even a setback. This is just part of healing. And healing isn’t linear, you know that.” Regulus tells him.

James rolls his eyes with a scoff. “Such a stupid, cliché line. What does that even mean?”

“It means you had a bad day. But a bad day doesn’t take away all the good days that you’ve had.” Regulus leans his forehead against James’. “You are getting better James. I see it. I see it every day and you’re working so hard. This doesn’t change any of that. This doesn’t make that go away.” He whispers into the small space between them.

James reluctantly nods but doesn’t say anything. They sit like that for a few minutes, breathing together until James’ sobs turn back into sniffles.

Regulus pulls back slightly to look at James. “Can I see?” He asks and James winces. “I just want to clean it and heal it for you, love.” He says softly.

James sighs and slowly turns his arm so Regulus can see the magical cuts on the inside of his forearm. Regulus takes his wand and performs a few cleaning and healing spells until the wounds are closed. Then Regulus takes James’ arm and brings it to his lips and kisses each of the cuts he just healed.

James tenses but doesn’t pull away. “You don’t have to do that.” He mumbles.

“I know I don’t.” Regulus whispers.

He maneuvers them so he can slide behind James and pull him back to lean against his chest. “I love you.” Regulus tells him after a few quiet moments.

“Thank you for loving me even though I’m like this.” James says so quietly Regulus isn’t sure if he was supposed to hear.

But he did hear, and he squeezes James around the waist before tangling their arms together to hold him close. “I love all of you, James. I don’t love you even though you’re like this. I don’t love you in spite of this. I love all of you. Every part of you. And some parts you’re working on right now. And that’s okay because I’m going to keep loving them. I’m going to keep loving you.” He pulls James impossibly closer and James melts into him.

“I love you so much, Regulus.” James tells him quietly after a few minutes.

Regulus smiles softly and kisses James’ temple again. “I love you, too.”
