HEYYY Guys! I haven't posted in to long! So many things to do! But thank you, all of you, who reacted and followed me. It means the world to me! SOOO, here is, FINALLY, Part 2 of "Desperate".

It hurts. That's the first thing you thing when you wake up. You slowly open your eyes, rubbing the strange sleep and drowning sensation that something is horribly wrong, and that staying asleep might chase it all a way. You open your eyes anyway, though, and stare right into On-Jo's eyes. "Yah!", you yell, heart pace quickening, then slowly returning to normal upon recognizing your best friend. You suddenly laugh, remembering how horrified you were, just what felt like mere moments ago. "You would not believe the dream I had today! I was walking down the hall, and was attacked and...", you trail off, eyes taking in the room around you. On-Jo, Ji-Min, Na-Yeon, Su-Hyeok, I-Sak, Dae-Su, Gyeong-Su, Nam-Ra, and Cheong-San, the latter sporting a nastly-looking gash, and all not looking good. "What.. no, no no no no no nonononono".

There was no way, that that anything you experienced in the last hour was real. No way. There couldn't be.. things, ravaging your school, killing people, EATING, people. But you were smart. Smart enough not to deny it. And even smarter enough, to believe it. "When?", you croak, throat tired, the drowsiness becoming a luxury that you wish you could return to. But you were wide awake now. You stand up, dusting your skirt, in a way that makes you recall the last hour. Slowly, your hands find their way back to your sides. "Not to long ago", replies On-Jo, handing you a cheap, crinkly plastic cup of water. "Well, honestly, we don't know exactly when, but we know that it was some time before lunch", Su-Hyeok jumps in, popping his back of the wall, and coming over to help you to your feet. You feel your heart shatter as you stand. What would your Mother and father think? How much they would worry, and what if.."This isn't just in the school? I mean, what if? If it's happening here, then how can we assume it isn't happening elsewhere, too? like back home?", I-Sak speaks your thoughts. You look around you again, as the room falls into a knowing silence.

"Gyeong-Su, close the door more tightly you big oaf!", you hear Na-yeon's high pitched and nasally voice yell. You all turn from you designated spots in the classroom, looking over at the young boy. You seem to notice this kind of stuff at times like these. How young everyone is. How no one is yet deserving to die. "I am! And don't think you have a place to talk, you snobby, spoiled girl!", Gyeong-Su snaps back. "What did you just call me!?", "Alright everyone, enough yelling. There are people going crazy, there is no time for bickering", Cheong-San interjects, but the two adolescents ignore him, opting for their bickering, instead. "Well, at least I'm not a poor rat!" "EXCUSE ME!?", you sigh, sharing a look with the girls, while the rest of the people in the room try to break the two apart. "I HATE YOU!" "And i don't? the feelings MUTUAL, honey!". You roll your eyes, but in the process you notice something. And open latch. A broken window, a gap, where there shouldn't be. You dash up, running to close it, catching everyone's eyes, and stopping the bickering in the process. But before you can, the door is slammed open, knocking the wind out of you. You fall back, already knowing that the person behind this door, they, were going to be trouble.

I have watched more zombie shows and movies in the last six months than I think I ever have in my entire life and I need somewhere to rant about it. Tumblr seems like the logical solution.

Summary: (taken from mydramalist.com)

Yoon Sae Bom is a special agent with quick wits and reflexes and another special quality. She earns the opportunity to move into a new apartment set aside for civil servants in a coveted apartment complex by pretending to marry high school friend Jung Yi Hyun. Yi Hyun is a detective investigating the spread of a mysterious disease. They are trapped in their apartment building when Han Tae Seok, head of the task force to control the spread of the disease, orders the complex to be sealed off from the rest of the city. Quarantine and disease reveal a social caste system, bringing out the best and worst of the apartment residents.

The Good Stuff:

The music in the last couple of episodes was so good?? Genuinely amazing.

Bit of a silly one: there was a scene in an earlier episode where one of the leads is giving a powerpoint presentation to a bunch of businessmen while discussing the cure and it got me thinking about the people responsible for making the little blink and you'll miss it slides for these scenes. I wish them all a good day.

The lead actors work so well together.

Actually every actor played their characters extremely well, especially the ones playing the more antagonistic characters. Bae Hae Seon is a fantastic actress.

Some people have said they didn't like how many references this series made to Covid-19 and the lockdowns, but I quite like it. It's subtle, and the idea that the country is still dealing with the trauma of the pandemic really adds new weight to the story.

Bar one child, not a single character in this show is wholly "good" and it is great. I would have liked a bit more recognition of the fact that the leads aren't necessarily always as good as they're portrayed to be, but eh. There are a lot of characters who are just horrible for the sake of it, and a few that are just downright evil, but there are quite a few who are presented in the beginning as these really unlikable figures that genuinely turn out to be some of the best people in the whole apartment block.

The Not-So-Good Stuff:

WHO KNOWINGLY LEAVES A CHILD WITH A DAMN SERIAL KILLER??? RIGHT AFTER TRYING TO KILL HER GUARDIAN??? WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE?!

There's a character that's introduced in I think episode 2 and slowly built up as this "mysterious" figure throughout the entire series. He is then really, really built up from about episode 8 (?) onwards (bearing in mind this is a 12 episode series), becoming a major player in the final episodes. And his ending is just... Honestly a bit disappointing. Like it wasn't bad, but Idk. There were too many fakeouts.

Speaking of fakeouts, the closing minutes of episode 12 are just downright cruel (/j). I hope the writers are happy with themselves!!

I saw a review that said they felt the overall ending was a bit vague, and I can't help but agree. Apart from two of the main leads, the fate of the rest of the cast is only really implied and I think I would have liked a bit more of a visual confirmation of what happens. Especially after spending 12 episodes learning to love or hate them.

Now maybe I'm clutching at straws here, but it's established early on that the main male lead cannot/struggles to run because of an old baseball injury that really fucked up his knee when he was in school. It's a major part of this character. So explain to me how this man manages to run perfectly fine in just about every episode. I understand that he's probably exaggerating a bit when he said he couldn't run, but apparently this has really irked me.

Parts of the final episodes felt a bit rushed. It makes sense, considering it's the climax of the story and so everything has ramped up several gears, but it just felt like in some parts they tried to cram too much in.

Would I Survive?

Hey I reckon I could be in with a shot for a while, you know. As long as I could hole myself up in a house for a bit I think I'd have a good chance.

Rewatch Ability: 6/10

I enjoyed it, but, personally, I don't think this is something that I'll rewatch for a while. I'm not opposed to the idea but I just don't think it would be worth it.

Overall Rating: 7/10

Final Thoughts:

Normally I only watch a new K-drama when it's suggested to me by my friend. I think this is the first time I've branched out and watched one without recommendation, and honestly? I think I made a good choice. It combines all the best parts of fiction that small me used to love: the marriage of convenience to slowburn romance pipeline, the zombies, the morally ambiguous cast etc.

(And as a note, while there is a romantic plot between the two leads, it does not detract from the actual "apocalypse survival" storyline. The two plots actually mesh quite well together, and there is a good platonic foundation to the characters' relationship.)

I also love the whole idea of zombies who aren't always zombies. They "turn" back into humans after a period of time and either immediately regret everything they did, or want to do it again. And the more it went on, the more "human" zombies they introduced and the more "inhumane" the human characters became. It was such a good contrast. I don't fully understand the mechanics of the virus or how it affected people, but I don't particularly care. I enjoyed it.

Fun side note: I don't actually think the word "zombie" is used at all in this series. Everyone affected by the disease is referred to as the "infected".

Hi Shana!

Do you watch any Korean dramas? You pulled me into several fandoms so I generally trust your taste in TV.

I've been trying to learn Korean, but Duolingo only has like four voices and I'm at the point where it's been recommended that I start watching kdramas.

I'm not far along enough to understand anything they'll be saying, but subtitle translation exists and it would be nice to get used to the sound of the language spoken by actual speakers.

I don't trust my own ability to find a kdrama I'd like, on account of every TV show I've gone hmm I wonder if I'll like that? I've hated.

Do you have any recommendations?

my favorite is absolutely hands down mr. queen. that show was made in a lab for meeee. gender fuckery, politics, identity porn my beloved. really fantastically written women. just wonderful

goblin was the first kdrama that really pulled me in. really wonderful fantastic characters who all have such great chemistry with one another. really hilarious when it's not breaking your heart. also once again identity porn my beloved

crash landing into you is very good but you've gotta just. disassociate from the north korea of it all. and accept that the north korea of it all makes it so stunningly unrealistic, even for a kdrama (in my personal opinion). but the main couple has incredible chemistry and the support cast is hilarious

hotel del luna is also a fave but it's pushed forward almost entirely by the amazing presence and acting of chemistry of IU alone. not that the rest of the cast isn't good and interesting, it's just that she's such a standout and really what makes it worth watching. i love a complicated woman

under the queen's umbrella is famously historically inaccurate (the whole premise of the plot makes no sense and would never happen) but it's really sweet, well acted, and! had such a wonderful and compassionate depiction of a trans woman struggling to be herself in old timey korea, which was pleasant surprise

kingom is a very good, well plotted zombie show. phenomenal acting, great story, but not enough in the way of interpersonal relationships in my personal opinion

business proposal is a classic, cute take on a trope done a million times but done very well. great chemistry, so cute, probably the one out of all my recs that's really just cute fluff. the side couple is also really cute with great chemistry, enough that you're rooting for them just as much as the main, which rarely happens. also, again, identity porn my beloved

Love for Love's Sake | Things You Didn't Notice #6

Translations and comments for Episode 6 (I have ADHD don't come after me, I was too invested that I bingewatched episodes yesterday and now I need to rewatch the 3 and 4 to make thorough comments on the dialogues). I was prompted by @lurkingshan to pay more attention to the movie posters :D Please let me know your thoughts after!

At first, I wanted to say that the movie titles were translated (at least, in my version of subs) and there was nothing behind them beside obvious but I decided to research more and indeed found somewhat interesting things! (the post will be long so I'll pile screenshots together)

First thing we see – Myungha has agonizing thoughts about "I can't believe I am on a date with a guy (when I'm supposed to be just an NPC/Player in this game)" next to the movie poster with an interesting title "The Guy Who Will Give a Kiss for 10 000 won"

This movie doesn't exist :D However! The title and poster style is clearly based on the old manhwa from ~2006 that's called "The Guy Who Will Give a Kiss for 5 000 won" (lmao they doubled MC's price that's inflation for you).

The note at the bottom says "Top Secret Disclosure: Kissing Method" aka MC is the guy who promises to teach you how to kiss if you give him some money, and the same note is shown in the LFLS poster. I thought the guy on the poster looked similar to Myungha but I think they actually got Taevin (the actor) to pose for this fake poster xD

Which leads me to the first thought that these posters were born out of Myungha's imagination – come on, we just got the scene between him and Yeowoon where they kissed for the first time and Yeowoon asked Myungha to give him time to practice and improve kissing (Myungha with his slightly better experience probably feels like a mentor with some "shady" intentions who eventually falls in love xD) Coincidence? I don't think so.

The second poster on the wall is also about a non-existent movie but before diving into that, here's how Yeowoon comes into the picture.

Two things: "Wonderful Ghost" huge poster on the wall behind him and the caption on the wall next to him.

In case you haven't paid attention, it says "If you come at four in the afternoon, I'll begin to be happy by three," which is a popular romantic phrase that definitely reflects Yeowoon's feelings atm, aww.

Meanwhile, Wonderful Ghost movie (also called as "The SOUL-mate") actually exists! But it's not new, it was released in 2018 and the story is about a guy done with his life after tragic events who becomes haunted by an energetic ghost that changes his life and mindset. (I did phrase this summary deliberately non-specific to make you feel another connection to the current story of LFLS.)

The caption on the poster also says, literally translated, "Let's do it together until the end of the world". This movie has other poster versions with other captions as Google shows but this is the version shown in Love for Love's Sake. Actually, while we're on the topic – I have no idea where "Love for Love's Sake" title came from, does anyone know? Someone in my previous posts speculated about the story based on this title but the Korean title of this series is "연애 지상주의 구역" ("Dating Supremacy Zone", or just "Dating Zone") which is the term that comes up in alert whenever Myungha is close to Yeowoon.

Anyway, back to our zombies, gorillas and demons. The movie Myungha and Yeowoon actually went to watch on their date was "Zombie Gorilla VS Demon Crocodile". The caption on thte poster says "Who will protect the world?"

Again, this movie doesn't exist. Why would they make such a point of showing Myungha crying and experiencing genuine emotions (when he only shed tears after he got scared by the full-scale system error and when his grandma got into hospital)? Well, Myungha explains it to Yewoon by himself.

"Well, it was the first time I see someone crying for a zombie gorilla." "Do you know how epic this movie is? The crocodile was actually an extraterrestrial. He met the gorilla here and joined him to save the world." "The plot is really strange." "It was very emotional."

Does it ring a bell? I don't think I need to add any words. Myungha = someone who came from another world and joined Yeowoon to save him and complete the game with happy ending. Myungha relates a lot and cries. I just find it funny thinking about how "The plot is really strange" and "You have a very strange taste" can be also said to all the viewers of LFLS (well, we all are very invested in this a bit confusing mysterious story as well, aren't we?xD)

I also love how we keep being reminded about the "unreality" of the story, how system can experience bugs and things in the world can glitch and Myungha is never immersed in this new life or his new love story to the 100% (cue all the 'choose anyone but me, go date a better man' and patronizing way he treats all characters around him, instead focusing on preventing them and the world from bad events following author's instructions)

I don't think I have much to add to the rest of the episode, I mirrored the haters articles and messages which were written for the show but the comments are quite generic (I couldn't read all of them but I didn't notice anything unusual). One thing, the DM to Myungha technically says "Die, Tae Myungha".

All I can say is that the online anonymous bullying is really prominent and a huge problem in Korea that leads to celebrities' depression and sometimes suicide. All influencers (and there are a lot of them in SK) are held to unimaginable 'perfect' standard and forums often have anonymous commenting which makes messages even more cruel (but later they addressed the issue and I think at least under news articles in Entertainment/Celebrity section the anonymous function was turned off, still, there are a lot of ways to ruin someone's life online). It happens in every country, of course, but stalking/online bullying is something that can be understood very easily by Koreans because it's often on the news and in the community.

Another little detail – even though Myungha does talk to students who are technically "younger" than him by one school year like he's old and wise, he doesn't use the word 'kid' nearly as much as you'd think xD (but the subs are doing the right thing anyway because how else are you supposed to show that subtle cultural difference between saying Cha Yeowoon and Yeowoon-ah, or Myungha calling Sangwoon by his name when he's frustrated with him instead of cursewords or titles?)

In the phrase "Get it together, kid!" Myungha actually uses the word 새끼 (saekki) which can be a curseword (like 'asshole, bastard', used by school gangster in previous eps) but it also literally means 'a child' that can be used by grandparents for their grandson or by parents, for example. So basically, think of 'son of a bitch' which can be used both as cursing and have literal meaning. Koreans have the same (개새끼 - son of a dog) phrase.

But it doesn't have an affectionate connotation when said by teenagers or adults (unless it's said to close friends without heat), and I am sure Myungha says it with more of "Get it together, you brat!" meaning. I just used this screenshot to tell you about Korean cursewords, he-he.

+ bonus: there is no translation or anything, but since we were talking about posters, I just found it funny and adorable how Yeowoon visually replaced here the poster behind him xD
