*in the middle of vhougt city homelander was admiring a shining golden statue of himself made in his honor after he got back from that mortal Kombat tournament and he was beaming with pride. Over the look of his new self image*

"Perfect. Just perfect! It brings a tear to my eye!"

*he then noticed a younger looking man who was sitting in front of the statue eating a handful of m&ms smiling at the rather easy day. No bad guys no bullies just a very simple day of getting little kitties out of trees and helping little old ladies across streets.*

*this man was Chibi Loveheart. Better known as Manysight he then saw Jhon land infront of him*

"Oh! Hi there! You the new hero?"

*he then turned around and looked back*

"You look like the statue. He your daddy?"

*Homelander growled unable to belive his ears because of this moron*

"Do...do you know who I am?"

*Chibi shook his head.*

*Which of course made him even madder as veins buldged in his neck.*

“listen asshole, this is my statue, MY statue, erected in MY greatness and you’re ruining the imagery so would you kindly FUCK OFF before someone has to clean your entrails off of it!”

*Chibi got up glad no child was nearby to hear this man as he looked him square in the eyes seeing the evil he was and said.*

"Don't. Say that. We have a duty as heros."

*Homelander got closer and jabbed his finger into his chest.*

"Worthless. Fucking. Nobody."

*oddly homelander was doing a good job keeping his tone down not noticing the smaller hero shoving him with enough force to send him crashing down the street tearing up the asphalt.*

"Bad hero. Bad. Go to timeout."

*pissed he was being treated like a toddler homelander blasted him in the face with his heat vision which sent the smaller Loveheart into a empty trash truck that thanks to the heat vision was melting and warping to entomb the smaller hero satisfied with his job he flew upwards only to hear a boom as chibis own heat vision tore through the truck showing he had a skintight supersuit that without a car that made him look like he came from a sci-fi novel.*

"Timeout's over."

*Homelander was baffled and annoyed as he yelled.*

"YOURE JUST A CHEAP AS HELL FUCKING KNOCK--OOOOOFFFF!"

*Chibi had slammed into him full force sending both of them skywards past the clouds homelander suprised someone could make him bleed he soon tried his heat vision only for chibi to grab his cape and spin him around.*

*as homelander tried again to laser him chibi threw him hard into Vought tower smashing him through several floors till he hit the bottem.*

"Huh. Mommy was right. Bullies can't fight back against bravery."

*As he turned to leave he got hit in the back hard by a plane wing then another thankfully the young hero had suffered worse thanks to his own powers but he wasn't sure what plane wings were doing up in the sky...*

*his question was answered by the planes body hitting him sending himself plummeting at high speed thankfully Chibi managed to stop the plane and got it safely on the ground after he was nearly dragged by it for a good few feet. Oddly he was polite enough to gently fly himself carrying rhe plane over to put it neatly in an airport.*

"There. All safe."

*he was then heat visioned through the plane and into the ground.*

*Dropping his wallet Homelander got a good look at the Loveheart family and saw a rather...good looking doll like mother and a few nice looking girls but he saw the pin on the mom and rolled his eyes.*

"Oh one of these Tranny fa--"

*he didn't get to finish his sentence before his neck was gripped by chibi who looked at him with his face burning red with for once murderous fury not heat vision*

"Don't. Insult. My. Mommy."

*he then chucked homelander across the contrary hard enough he made a sonic boom and his costume was tearing from the Mach cone.*

*As homelander flew back with a loud yell of enraged screams he slammed into chibi as he almost lasered several people only for Chibi to punch him square in the face hard enough to break several teeth and his nose.*

"WHAT ARE YOU DOING!? YOUD KILL THEM!"

*Hearing his opponent talk down to him he rolled his eyes.*

"Don’t talk to me as if these people matter, their goings on, their pathetic little lifes, just dust in the wind to someone like me, I could kill every single one of them here and now and there’s nothing anyone can do to stop me, in fact I might just do that and blame you afterwards, who’re the masses going to believe? Their greatest hero or some fucking braindead retard raised by fa-"

*once again cut off chibi flew through the sky smashing him through several billboards that promoted vought products as he roared loudly*

"DONT BULLY MY FAMILY!!!"

*not noticing his suits decals were turning red with his eyes turning an electrical purple homelander saw this and growled he really is a knockoff trying one last tike to heat vision him off his chest only to get punched for good effort slamming into his statue with enough force it started to crack thanks to homelander having it reinforced. Chibi then had the suits function shown with his eyes swapping powers at random his suit automatically changed to use another vision power that would complimented it. Red being heat vision while his own purple eyes was disintegration.*

*with one last roar of*

"I HATE BULLIES! I HATE YOU!"

*he fired the dual blast hoping to keep him down somehow not hearing homelander yell out 'FUCK YOU!' As loud as he could with his limbs being destroyed and his skin with flesh being melted into slog somehow he didn't die until his almost melted statue started sinking him in like boiling quicksand and the head landed on his half caved in skull while all of him sunk more and more into the melted monument to his hedonism.*

*chibi finally stopped when he heard screams as he had somehow during his laser barrage blasted the vought incorporate building into peices panicking he rushed to save everyone and started cleaning debris when he was done he didn't see homelander thinking he ran away like a scared bully with his tail between his legs like a baby he smiled and floated upwards as he heard someone call for help! That being a sailor on a sinking sea liner!*

Strengths:as one of Dolly's many children hes a capable superhero and is physically the strongest of the children. Superhuman strength (Picked up a mountain once trying to find a secret hideout. Flew through an airship trying to stop it from crashing.) Superhuman durability (has been hit with pretty much everything a human can throw at him. Survived his own various eye powers reflected back at him considering most are lasers freeze rays petrifcation and vaporizeation. Yeah.) Hypersonic speed (constantly Flys fast enough to create sonic booms and Mach cones showing he can go Mach 5 at least.) His super suit allows him to use any eye power he's not using so he can help anyone else he wants. He's got every eye/vision power in the books. He can see through anyone's lies somehow can naturally tell if someone's good or bad. He's used to navigating the world without seeing where he's going.

Weaknesses:he's not the brightest. He's pretty gullable. He does things without subtly (ripped up a mountain cause he didn't know how to find a hidden base. He often forgets how strong he is and breaks things on accidentally.) He fights like a school yard child cause he hates fighting others because he's more of the save kittens and help school children kind of hero.

Rain and Ramen

Jimin x Reader

The water hisses as square-shaped noodles are dropped into the depths of the pot, submerging quickly beneath the bubbles. Jimin tears another package open and peels away the plastic wrapping, tossing it in the general direction of the overflowing trash bin. After deciding there was enough boiling noodles for the two of you, he reaches over to the pitiful portion of counter space tucked between the wall and gas stove top. He picks up a cheap all-in-one spice container and with a flick of his wrist adds a few dashes, licking his thumb at the end. 

Across the room you lie against the peeling wallpaper decorated with posters collected from various soon-to-be and never-to-be-known artists alike framing your head and shoulders. Jimin could not understand why you insisted on getting the signatures of each and every musician after their set no matter how late you were forced to stay. You tell him if they ever became famous you could sell them on e-bay to pay next month’s rent.

What if they never go anywhere? He would ask holding on to the pole above your hand, chest pressed to your back, as you took the train home. 

Then at least we made them feel like they would. You always respond earning an endearing kiss on the forehead from your husband.

You flip a page in your book, coming to the end of the chapter. You squint under the lamp light that has now become more apparent than what your two windows could offer in the wake of a raging night thunderstorm. Heeding your mother’s warning as a child to never read in the dark, you close the book and roll your neck. 

Your eyes naturally find your husband, shirtless at the stove a mere twenty feet in front of you. The muscles in his shoulders contract as he tends to dinner, at times stretching so that the ligaments that define his back accentuate his spine. A pair of dimples right above the waistline of his sweatpants - the same ones he’s worn since college - wink at you from time to time. It never fails to draw a smile to your face, even if Jimin swears to you to just wait another month and he’ll get rid of the love handles. 

“These are not love handles, Jimin! You’re skinnier than I am. And even if they were, I’d love you all the same.” You would tell him as your fingertips trace the soft skin peeking between his tee and boxers. 

“They are though and I would be fine if I could just get rid of them. How will I scare other men away if I look like the chubby side kick rather than the dashing, strong hero?” 

He always pouts and even in the dark you know his cheeks are as round as the dumplings you splurge on every weekend. But telling him you want to bite said cheeks like the delectable side dish would be asking him to take it the wrong way. 

So you would resort to loving his body the best way you knew how. By using your wandering fingertips to push his hips over, swinging your leg over his at the same time. With his back pressed into the mattress, he has no where to run, no where to look but up at you. You have his full attention now instead of his self-deprecating thoughts.

Instinctively he lays his palms on your hips. Your hands rest over them. 

“Feel these? These are real love handles, Jiminie. You are more than ten pounds away from having them.” 

He would pinch your skin, finally seeing your way of things as you talked yourself down the way he did, relenting to your unconditional love and the way your hips roll over his. And every flaw, perceived or real, would be kissed and held and adored as love blossomed between your unified bodies and locked lips. 

Jimin turns the stove off as the first thunder clap erupts. The tall narrow window that spared your humble one-room apartment some few hours of daylight rattles with the vibrations of the building. On cue, rain assaults the glass with such ferocity Jimin pauses his actions as you draw your eyes from his body to the sky. 

“I really hope the glue holds.” Jimin mutters as he runs his fingertips along the crease of the window frame. Last time, water collected in the bricks of your old building and caused water damage that your landlord found all too easy to pin on you.

“Grab a hand towel to be safe and stuff it in the corners.” You suggest. Jimin hums and takes a spare one to do just that.

As night arrives in full, the room is cast in a yellow haze offered by the odd lamps you two had found at the nearest thrift shop. That was what made up most of your apartment. A unique arrangement of cheap but practical furniture, not one item matching another. Maybe once upon a time in high school you had created a dozen Pinterest boards of your aesthetically pleasing home. But now, in reality, you had grown to love the story of the life you and Jimin had created together in this hole-in-the-wall home.

“Chopsticks or fork?” Jimin’s soft voice, subdued with a long day’s fatigue, breaks your constant reminiscing. You spot him holding a bowl in hand, the other resting in the single drawer holding plastic take out utensils available. 

“Chopsticks.” You answer, pulling your legs from the tangle of blanket and sheets they had become intertwined with, resetting the bed that acted as the main function of your home.

He rolls his eyes. “You don’t know how to use chopsticks.” 

“I do too! And if that was true, then why did you ask me?” You retort, playing along to the nightly argument so routine it felt like saying prayer before dinner. 

“Because if I don’t you’ll get mad at me for assuming you wanted a fork.” Jimin scoffs, grabbing two pairs of chopsticks despite his own opinion.

“I do not-”

“Or you’ll just steal mine so you can prove to me how much of a mess you make.” 

You grin unabashedly but do your best to look horrified by his accusation. 

“You’re lucky I love you, Park Jimin.” You accept the bowl and the kiss he leaves on your lips. 

“You’re the lucky one.” Jimin yelps at the swat to his butt as he returns to the stove for his own serving.

You set up your laptop, signing in and opening Netflix to find the TV show Jimin and you binged every night like a true married couple. There weren’t many things you guys could afford, but having the small luxury of escaping reality and daydream of another life with the one you love was a price you were willing to subtract for a sense of sanity. In this case, however, it was daydreaming an affordable home in the suburbs. As such, you were in the middle of season two of House Hunters.

Once everything is settled, Jimin sits crossed-leg beside you, his knee brushing yours and thigh keeping your skin warm. As always, you exchange comments between slurps of noodles, sometimes agreeing and other times arguing over the characters’ choices in the story. 

During such an argument you go in for a mouthful of noodles without paying attention. What little noodles you manage to grab splash onto your legs, leaving yellow residue and the sting of failure on your skin.

“Jimin…” You stare at the screen ahead of you, not giving him the satisfaction of seeing your guilty expression. 

“‘Ere you go, baby.” He pulls out a fork from seemingly no where and having to spare a glance at him to take it, you see he’s doing his best not to smirk but failing triumphantly. 

“I ate half my bowl!” You protest as he reaches over with a napkin again from thin air to wipe down your legs as you hold the bowl over his head. ‘I told you so’ glitters in his eyes as clear as day. But being the sweetheart he is, he says nothing. Even if his shoulders shake with internal laughter. He leaves a kiss on your thigh and tosses away the napkin. Then shovels another pile of ramen between his swollen lips. 

The rain grows steady, causing you to turn up the volume on your laptop. Finished with his bowl, Jimin sets it on the nightstand and maneuvers your body against him, careful of your hot soup but wrapped up in you all the same. His breath smells heavily of ramen, hot against your neck, but you have no desire to move him, indulging in his mouth leaving little affectionate sucks and kisses from time to time. 

As you finish your bowl he takes it for you, setting it with his to be washed later. He turns your chin for another kiss, hands falling to your stomach to rest comfortably. Your hands settle over his, picking at the hangnails on each finger nail. Then tracing the wedding band that clicks against yours every so often. 

The episode ends and the rain has quieted to a steady hum. The paper thin walls of your apartment remain standing, although the edges of the wood paneling round your window frame look a bit warped. 

“It’ll dry.” Jimin says against your temple, knowing you worry about the landlord finding any and every reason to accuse you of damages in order to take what little savings Jimin and you had saved since graduating college.

“I hope so.” 

“You know so.” He squeezes you making you grunt in warning from a full belly. Jimin releases your body and rolls out of bed, ignoring your whines so he can set the dishes in the sink.  

You put the laptop away and spread-eagle out on the bed as Jimin turns out each lamp around the room before stepping into the bathroom to brush his teeth. 

“Babe, come brush your teeth!” He mumbles with a mouth full of toothpaste.

“No, I’ll do it in the morning.” you whine, rolling under the covers. 

You hear Jimin spit into the sink and rinse it down. Shutting off the light he returns, joining you under the covers. 

“You’re gross.” He states. You hum, wiggling closer to him and finding your favorite place, face tucked into his neck and leg slotted between his heated thighs. Warm palms resiliently soft after years of blue collar jobs run down your shirt - well, really his shirt from work today - and back up against your skin. Goosebumps dance down your spine and a shiver pushes you closer into Jimin’s heat. He unclips your bra and convinces you to sit up long enough to slide it off. He’s more concerned than you are about the rumors of bra-sleeping health issues but you’re just thankful to breathe easier without it.

You hum a thanks, offering your lips in a goodnight kiss which he takes no matter what he says. Your hands run up and down his chest, one settling between your heartbeats, the other drapes over his neck. The blanket shifts as he adjusts to a better position and sighs. 

The steady beat of rain offers a lullaby and you fall asleep in no time. Jimin can feel the steady exhale of warmth against his pectoral. Even if he wakes up in the morning with drool dried down to his stomach, he doesn’t care, pulling you all the more closer as he plays with the ends of your hair. It helps him fall asleep, twirling it around his fingertips, brushing against his palm and offering the scent of home to him. Sometimes it’ll be tucked away, and even still, Jimin will wait until your sound asleep to find a stray to untuck and twirl again and again. It’s not unusual for you to wake up with Jimin’s hand tangled in your hair forcing you to gently extract his fingers with your head bent at odd angles in order to not wake him up.

Jimin is not particularly proud of the place you two presently call home. The building creaks, the room is claustrophobic, and as his wife, you deserve a home where you’re allowed to paint the  walls whatever color you like. Bills, unpaid and overdue constantly occupy him. It seems no matter how many hours you pick up or jobs he fits into the week there’s still not enough to give you everything you want. Jimin sighs and bites his lip. 

Everything I want for you. He corrects, knowing that the decision to move into a low-income house was part of the plan you both agreed to. In fact, you had suggested it in order to be able to attack those student loans first. Yet Jimin wanted more for the both of you. He wanted you to decorate room after room of a beautiful house that the two of you would grow old together in. He wanted a safe neighborhood in case you wanted kids - or even pets. 

He wanted a stable job, a lifelong career he could take joy in and also provide for his wife with. You assured him every day that a future like that awaited you. He just needed to be patient. But how long could you put up with this? How long before your father’s advice crept back in and reminded you how marrying Jimin so young was unwise.

Then again, how could he forget the way you fought for him in front of your entire family at Thanksgiving? - and won them over. How could he forget the excitement in your eyes as he told you his dreams of dancing and telling stories with every fiber of his being. You were nearly pushing him into the dance academy’s administration office. How could he forget the way you made the best of every situation as if it wasn’t your current lifestyle but a game of pretend?

“It’s just for now. Not always.” The words have become your mantra. Even if all the worries of living a comfortable life plagued Jimin every day, he was thankful that he was here with you. He would never regret proposing to you. He would cherish the nights falling asleep next to you in this tiny little room. No matter how many nights there would be.

*Kicks in door* I need to tell you about Sola and Libertus, or in other words the SAPPIESTS SAPS TO EVER SAP.

-So when Sola and Libertus finally start dating (which is a whole ‘nother story because Lib is Dense and the glaives are Suffering) the two are tooth-rotting levels of Sweet.

-Lib puts his braiding skills to use and makes flower crowns for Sola, which honestly Sola loves more than any jewelry Lib might buy, because the flowers are gorgeous and Lib made them for her, even learning the Lucian Flower Language. The gifts have meaning. It’s a thoughtful gift and Sola wears the crowns until the flowers wilt and Lib makes her another one.

-(Then Lib finds a place that sells quality silk flowers and learns to make crowns and hair pieces with those, and Sola starts wearing flowers with pretty much every outfit based on what she wants to ‘say’.)

-Dates between them are low-key, usually hanging around Little Galahd. The Galahdians don’t gawk at Sola for being a princess and Lib loves showing Sola around what little slice of home he’s still got, and teaching her Galahdian culture.

-One of the few exceptions is when Lib and Sola dress up (not super fancy, but fancier than they usually wear around Little Galahd) and Lib takes Sola dancing on the roof of the Old Cathedral during one of the firework festivals, and Lib carries Sola up all four flights of stairs because Lib maybe didn’t tell Sola exactly where they were going and Sola wore a pretty pair of heels that she’s not keen on climbing stairs in. And sure, they could warp up them, but it gives Lib the excuse to carry her princess-style.

-Sola throws herself into learning Galahdian Culture the same way she does anything else - completely and enthusiastically. She learns how to do Libertus’ braids (and the first time she asks Libertus if she can leaves him breathless with emotion), listens to the stories and tales and learns about all the things that Lib and Nyx and all the Galahdians did growing up.

-Sola tries Galahdian Cuisine. It doesn’t go well. This woman is fierce yes, but oh boy do her taste buds not agree with galahdian levels of spice. Sola pouts good naturedly even as the rest of the glaives tease her for her Delicate Lucian Palate and Lib gets her a glass of milk to damp the heat in her mouth. 

-Sola being Sola, she doesn’t let that stop her from trying Every Single Dish despite it ending the same way every single time. Sola would accuse Tredd of being an asshole and adding more spice on purpose, but the other glaives eat it just fine so Sola just takes the glass of milk and one of Yamachang’s milder versions of said dish.

-Lib loves picking up Sola. Sola tolerates being carried around with fond exasperation, though she won’t admit to anyone but Lib that she actually likes just how far she can see when she’s sitting on Lib’s shoulders.

-the Galahdian kids LOVE Sola, because this woman is Big Sister All The Way, and has no qualms making time to play or chat with them when she’s off duty and down in Little Galahd, and Lib just Melts whenever he sees Sola with the kids, face light up with pure happiness.

-Sola and Lib are very casually affectionate with each other. Holding hands, quick kisses on the lips or cheeks or forehead, Sola sitting in Lib’s lap or Lib laying down with his head in Sola’s lap, lots of hugs - full hugs, side hugs, ALL THE HUGS - and just casual lingering touches. Little quick displays of affection.

-Sola actually moves out of the Citadel and gets an apartment with Crowe in Little Galahd. Mostly because she likes being in Little Galahd - the living conditions are shit compared to the rest of Insomnia yeah, but it’s the people Sola moved for and frankly she’s lived in worse conditions out on glaive missions - but also to bring her father’s attention to just how bad it is in the slums.

-Even though Sola has her own place with Crowe, she spends half her time at Lib and Nyx’s. When she’s at her place, Lib is also typically with her and both Nyx and Crowe comment how damn domestic they are.

-Lib has woken up to find Sola in whichever apartment they spend the night at, making breakfast for him and Nyx and Crowe (the other two joining them in the morning no matter where it is) wearing Lib’s shirt. It makes him ridiculously pleased and Galahdian lax attitudes about nudity mean that Lib, Sola, Nyx, and Crowe have sat down for breakfast wearing at most two outfits between them.

-Sola goes to town on the nobles overseeing the Galahdian sector, pushing for the funding that the slums desperately need but ‘are never enough of’ when the subject is brought up. She’s seen exactly how bad it is in the slums - even for the glaives who actually have a steady income, Lib and Nyx’s apartment has a hole in the ceiling - and those are her people dammit.

-Sola also hears how the Galahdians had to stop wearing their family beads in their hair because they kept getting reported for breaking the Sumptuary Laws, simply because rich assholes couldn’t stand to see the ‘dirty foreigners’ wearing the precious stone and metal beads that were so common back on Galahd. 

-Libertus stares at Sola in Awe when she tells the glaives about getting the Sumptuary Laws stricken from the books, every inch of her Vicious Satisfaction. Said satisfaction disappears when Libertus kisses her senseless, but Sola’s okay with that. Lib’s a fantastic kisser.

-Lib starts seriously thinking about proposing to Sola, and is Determined to do things properly, because while Sola likes being able to be a normal civilian, she is a princess and Lib refuses to have anyone making disparaging comments about her. So he goes and asks Noctis first if he can marry Sola, because while Regis is Sola’s father, Noctis is the one that Sola will do almost anything for. Seventeen year old Noctis attempts to give Libertus an intimidating stare (not bad, but Lib is used to the Captain and the Prince is far too pretty-faced to pull that kind of thing off) but gives his blessing, telling him that if he breaks Sola’s heart Noctis will beat the shit out of whatever Sola decides to leave behind. Which, fair.

-Then he asks Regis, in front of Cor and Clarus, and yeah, the King, Marshal, and Shield are a hell of a lot more intimidating than Sola’s baby brother. Regis tries the whole ‘why should I’ deal, and Libertus honestly and wryly states that Sola won’t let anyone dictate who she does or does not marry, but having her father’s blessing would mean a lot to her. Clarus snorts while Cor and Regis deflate, because yeah, Sola would tell them off for trying to prevent her from marrying Libertus and then elope with Lib just to spite them.

-Cor takes Libertus ring shopping. Libertus wants to buy the rings himself, but Regis tells Libertus that wedding rings in Insomnia aren’t cheap, and Regis would rather Libertus completely ignore the price tag and focus on finding a ring Sola will love. Libertus chooses a silver ring with two thin bands connected by interspersed tiny gold flowers with tiny blue topazes in the center of each.

-Meanwhile, Sola has been talking with Nyx about How Galahdians Do Weddings. She knows she’s not getting out of a Royal Wedding, she’s the King’s eldest. But she does want to marry Lib according to HIS traditions too. Nyx DOES tell Sola that proposing to Lib means joining HIS clan, but Sola is more than fine with that. Screw the whole ‘Lucis Caelums not allowed to marry out’ bs, Regis has Noctis to carry on the bloodline and family name and Sola wants to take Libertus’ name.

-Nyx is Best Wingman, getting pretty much all the glaives he can to turn up at Yamachang’s after work without tipping off anyone’s suspicions about what is about to go down. (Part of that is Sola’s credit, but she’s just making sure Lib is too distracted to keep one eye out for Nyx Shenanigans as usual.)

-Libertus.exe stops working for about two seconds when Sola pulls out the courtship necklace and bead, before he lifts her up in a bear hug and spins her around while happily accepting. Then he promptly sets her down, kneels, and proposes with the ring he’d been carrying around trying to find the right time to propose.

-The glaives go nuts, all of Little Galahd pretty much starts partying though the Actual Wedding Celebration is planned for a later date so everyone can properly prepare for it. Sola helps Lib with the necklace and braids the bead into his hair - a large silver bead with gold inlay that stands out against Lib’s dark hair - and Lib slips the ring onto Sola’s hand.

Since being a runaway slave in the Outer Rim isn't exactly easy, she makes the Mandalorian an offer he can't refuse and soon they travel across the galaxy, looking for her missing husband.

Chapter 5 - Tatooine

Sinead turned the memory bank over and over, the metal warming up between her hands. Most of her life she'd found herself in close proximity to a mechanic, so learning proper droid maintenance had never been a priority, something she regretted now, looking down at the lifeless box.

A pleasant and familiar hum surrounded her as the ship hurtled through the dark void, lulling her into a sense of calm she hadn’t felt since leaving the ruins. Even now, hours later, she felt the presence of it lurking in the back of her mind.

Suddenly, the world tilted, and Sinead crashed to the floor. The memory bank few out of her hands and skipped across the floor. She pushed herself up on her hands and knees, when the ship rocked violently, making her cling to the bunk to keep from being thrown clean across the ship.

Two alarms started wailing in tandem.

She gritted her teeth and grabbed hold of a rung on the ladder, climbing into the cockpit before the ship shook and tipped wildly.

The Mandalorian was in the pilot’s seat, his hands flying across the dashboard, flicking switches and trying to stabilize the ship. The kid was strapped into his seat, his head swirling around to look at all the light coming to life.

Sinead sat down and pulled the safety harness over her shoulders.

"What the hell is going on?"

"Company."

The Mandalorian jerked the steering handles and the ship spun away, a volley of blaster bolts whizzing past the window.

According to a screen on the console, a small starfighter flew directly behind them, firing every time the Razor Crest was still for long enough. They'd never be able to outrun or outmaneuver it.

Cold dread expanded from the base of her spine, making her muscles twitch and tense. Every sound seemed dull, like she was hearing it from inside a vacuum.

The starboard turbine was hit, showering the cockpit in sparks as the shock traveled into the main engine. A third alarm joined the cacophony.

Sinead swallowed hard and found her voice. "Doesn't this hunk of metal have any shields?" She grabbed the armrests so hard her knuckles turned white.

The stars turned into streaks as the ship careened to the side, another round of lasers streaking past the window.

It had to be pirates, not many were brazen enough to attack a gunship, even out in the Outer Rim. Maybe this time she’d die instead of-

A shadowy figure flickered to life above the dashboard. "Give us the child, Mando," it said, its voice clipping in and out. "I might let you live."

Sinead looked at the child, who gurgling nervously to himself. She wanted to reach over and reassure him, but the harness was too tight. Why would anyone want the kid badly enough to attack them for it?

And explosion rocked through the ship, and underneath there was a sound of metal groaning.

Flashing lights danced on the Mandalorian’s helmet.

“Hold on.” Mando sent them into a wild spin, the stars turning into white streaks as all sense of direction spun away as quickly as the ship.

It felt like Sinead had been dropped down a bottomless well.

The hologram warped as power redirected. “I can bring you in warm, or I can bring you in cold,” it said before cutting out completely.

There was no way the other ship wouldn’t blast them to smithereens the first chance it got.

Mando hit the brakes, and the ship hung unmoving in the air, before the starfighter screamed past it, scraping against the Crest with a sound like an old hovercart in a trash compactor.

Mando fired once, and the laser ripped through the small vessel before it had a chance to spin around and attack. The ship exploded, leaving glittering debris like stardust in its wake.

Sinead sat back in her seat. Her entire midsection felt bruised from the harness, but the alternative was being a smear on the window so she couldn’t complain.

“Nice flying.” She didn’t mean for it to come out sounding so sarcastic, but fear and adrenaline still coursed through her veins, making the blood rush in her ears.

The Mandalorian either didn’t hear or ignored her, as he checked the status of the ship.

“Losing fuel,” he mumbled mostly to himself.

Sinead undid her safety harness and reached over to the child. “Are you okay there?”

The kid laughed as the power went out and they found themselves in complete darkness.

“I think he’s okay,” Sinead said, gently booping him on the nose. “Please say we’re not stranded out here.”

“I think I can redirect the power,” the Mandalorian said, getting up and flicking a switch at the back of the cockpit.

The ship came to life, a sad, sputtering one that wouldn’t last long, but enough so that Mando could propel it towards the nearest planet, an orange dust ball hanging in the void.

“Are you gonna tell me who’s after the kid?”

Mando glanced at her over his shoulder.

“You know, this whole silence thing is getting old. At least come up with a lie like the rest of us.”

Mando glared at her, and Sinead offered him a sharp smile.

The planet was getting closer and closer when Sinead leaned forward. “What is this place even? Or are you not going to answer that either?”

“Tatooine.”

“Oh, that’s just great.”

The Mandalorian adjusted their course toward a small smidge on the planet’s surface. “The Hutt’s been dead for years, and he hasn’t been replaced yet.”

Sinead made an uncertain sound. “Yet, but I’m sure the clan’s just waiting until the region is stable again. They’re not exactly the type to give up a planet without a fight.”

“You been here before?”

“No, but I’ve heard it’s a desolate hellhole.”

Gold-orange crags and sand dunes took form as they cruised over the surface, the ship groaning with the effort it took to keep them in one piece.

Sand. She really hated sand.

The comm came to life and a scratchy voice filled the cockpit.

“This is Mos Eisley tower, we’re tracking you. Head for bay 3-5. Over.”

“Copy that. Locked in for 3-5.”

Mos Eisley was nearly impossible to see, a sandstone city poking up through the sand which piled up at the walls making the squat houses look like igloos in the desert. A communication tower rose from the center of the city, its blinking lights the only reason most travelers spotted the city from the air.

The ship wobbled as it made ready for landing, and new alarm blared. The Mandalorian turned it off with an irritated slap on the console.

The kid had fallen asleep sometime after the excitement of the dogfight died down, and the Mandalorian left him sleeping on the bunk, while Sinead retrieved the memory bank, which had ended up on the other side of the ship and stowing it away in the nearest compartment.

Mando looked at her. “Maybe you should stay in the ship.”

Sinead blew out a deep breath. “As you said, the Hutt’s long dead. I can take a look around his old palace, see if there’s something we can use.”

“Just be careful.”

Sinead snuck a glance at the Mandalorian. He wasn’t looking at her.

“Sure.”

Even before the ramp was down, Sinead felt the hot, unyielding fingers of the desert close around her throat. Dry heat snuck under her clothes, making her mouth feel as dry as the surroundings. Cold, unwanted memories pushed to the forefront and she took a second to put them back where they belonged, a dark and unused corner of her mind where they wouldn’t get in the way.

Three pit droids hurried toward the ship the second the ramp touch down, their rusty bodies bouncing over dusty ground like springs.

The Mandalorian pulled his blaster and shot once at the ground in front of the droids, who screeched and collapsed into small heaps, cowering in f-ear.

Sinead yelped and pressed a hand to her racing heart. “Fuck, Mando! What is it with you and droids?”

“Hey!” A shout rang out from inside a cluttered garage, and a short human woman wearing greasy overalls stormed out from behind a safety barrier. Her short stature was almost made up by her rather gravity defying hair. “You damage one of my droids, you pay for it!” The way she was brandishing a heavy wrench left exactly how he’d pay for it up to interpretation.

“Just keep them away from my ship,” Mando ground out, shooting a look at the droids who scurried away.

The mechanic gave him an unimpressed look. “Yeah? Do you think that’s a good idea, do ya? Let’s take a look at your ship.”

She walked around it, noting every dent and scratch on her datapad. “Look at that,” she said, holding a scanner up to the ship. “You gotta lotta carbon scorching building up top. If I didn’t know better, think you were in a shootout.”

Sinead stepped forward before the Mandalorian had a chance to reply. “We ran into a meteor shower out by the Torq. Barely made it planet-side, to tell you the truth.”

“Uh-huh,” the mechanic lifted an eyebrow, but she stopped asking questions, turning around to continue her inspection. “… a special tool for that one. Oh yeah, I’m gonna have to rotate that.”

The Mandalorian rolled his shoulders, and Sinead bit the inside of her cheek. That all sounded very expensive.

“You got a fuel leak! Look at this, this is a mess. How did you even land?”

“Like I said, just barely.” Sinead shifted her weight from one foot to the other. “How much for it?”

“The repairs you need ain’t exactly cheap-”

“I’ve got five hundred Imperial credits,” the Mandalorian said.

The mechanic grabbed the credits and have them a good look. “That’s all you got?” When the Mandalorian didn’t magically procure more money, she looked at the droids. “Well, what do you guys think?”

The droids tittered in unison, and the mechanic shrugged. “That should at least cover the hangar.”

“We’ll get you your money.”

“Mm, I’ve heard that before.” She gave both Sinead and the Mandalorian a skeptical look.

“Just remember- “

“Yeah, no droids. I heard ya’. You don’t have to say it twice.”

Sinead looked back at the ship as they left the hangar, a thin pillar of smoke was rising from the turbine and the mechanic had already started banging around underneath it.

The second she stepped out into the blaring sunlight, her face stung with sand being blasted through the street. If she never had to step foot in the desert again, she'd die a happy woman.

"So, what's the plan?" She asked the Mandalorian, who didn't look bothered in the heat. Of course, since she couldn't see his face he might be dying underneath the helmet. The T-visor seemed completely black in the sunlight.

"I’ll head to the cantina, see if I can find work. Don't get too close to the palace, the Hutt's guards might still be around."

Sinead gritted her teeth. "Right, I have been in these kinds of situations before you know: I'm not helpless."

"That's not-" the Mandalorian blew out a sharp breath and shook his head. "Never mind."

Sinead made her way to the Hutt's palace alone, reminding herself to breathe regularly, not too deep and not too shallow. She was just a tourist walking alone, not a runaway slave from the very clan that until recently had an iron grip on the planet. The people walking past her weren't staring, they didn't recognize her at all.

She clenched her hands so they'd stop fidgeting. It felt like someone was watching her, a burning spike to the back of her head.

A market had been raised in a big square, rows and rows of hastily put together stalls crisscrossed in a confusing jumble. Shouts from the many vendors mingled in the air into an incomprehensible wall of sound. A Besalisk was grilling sweet meats over an open fire, holding a skewer in each of his four hands. The meat sizzled as Sinead walked past.

Two Jawas screamed in unison at everyone who came close enough to their stall, doing little to entice anyone to stop. Piles of scrap spilled into the street, and the Jawas screeched in indignation whenever anyone accidentally stepped on it.

Sinead ambled down the rows, trying to look like she was browsing the goods without attracting so much attention that anyone would talk to her. Most of the wares being sold were practical, tools and dried food, spare parts for droids. Under a moth-eaten pavilion that offered little in the way of shade, she found a small booth filled with trinkets that looked like they had been ripped straight out of the bowels of a ship. There were brooches made of twisted metal and rings that doubled as lug nuts.

An old woman sat on the other side of the stall. She wore ragged clothes that at first glance made her look like a scarecrow left out in the sun for too long, and it wasn't until she moved that Sinead noticed her. Her face was disproportionately small for her body, resembling a walnut someone left on top of a pile of old laundry.

"See anything you like?" Her voice sounded like a trash compacter filled with rocks. "I make 'em myself."

That wasn't hard to believe. Sinead hummed politely and picked up a brooch made from cogs and a rubber binding. "I’m afraid jewelry isn't that high of a priority right now."

Her wrinkles deepened as she pursed her lips. "Meh, people don't even know what they need until it's right in front of ‘em. Tell ya’ what, I'll give you a good deal, okay? The earrings for fifty creds."

Sinead couldn’t help but snort. The earrings in question were made from old circuitry, the hooks so rusty that wearing them was a surefire way of getting a nasty infection. "Fifty is a bit steep, don't you think?"

The old woman grinned, showing her one snaggletooth poking over her lower lip. “Low price to pay for beauty, innit?”

Tapping on the table Sinead though for a second before saying, "tell you what, I'll buy one of your-" she gestured to the assorted jewelry- "wares … if you can give me some information in return."

The old lady grinned again, her tooth a terrible distraction, looking like a broken roof shingle. "Let's hear it then. What'ya want?"

"Oh no, information first, then the sale."

A shadow fell across the woman's face as she glared Sinead, her watery eyes studying her face. "If I didn't know better, I'd think you didn’t trust me."

Sinead kept her face carefully neutral. "Past experiences have taught me to hold payment until after I get what I want. I’m sure you understand, right?"

There was a cruel glint in the old woman's eyes. "You bet I do. Ask away, dear."

For one long moment, Sinead blanked on what to ask her. She wanted to talk about the Hutt, but the old crone had done nothing to inspire trust.

"The entire galaxy was turned upside down when the Empire fell. How was it here?"

The old woman cackled and folded her wizened hands over her stomach. "You haven't seen our little art project out by the wall, have ya’? A little parting gift from us to the Empire."

"Who controls the planet now? The New Republic-"

The old woman spat on the sand.

"... right."

"We control ourselves, dearie." Sinead had never heard a term of endearment used with so much venom. "We ain't need anyone come here and tell us how to run our own damn home. After they got the message, most of the bucketheads left. The ones who didn't, well, they make a good decoration, don't they?"

"A place outside the grip of the Empire and the Republic sounds nice."

"Sounds like you have something to hide."

Sinead shrugged. "I don't like tyrants or bureaucracy."

"We got rid of our old tyrant years ago, ain't ever looked back since," the old woman sneered,

There we go.

Sinead shifted her weight and leaned closer. "Heard about that on the subspace, that's nasty business. Any chance the Hutt's head is hanging with the others? I'd like to go give my goodbyes in person."

The old woman peered at Sinead. "Sounds personal."

"As far as I'm concerned, hating the Hutt clan is everyone's business, and those who don't are either terminally stupid or, well, part of the Hutt clan.”

"That kriffin' piece of blubber is probably still out in the Dune Sea somewhere. I doubt even the bloatflies'll touch his stinking corpse."

"He was killed in his palace? I heard that place is a fortress."

"My boy went out with some of the others, just to have a little lookie-loo at the place, but the slaves didn't wanna let nobody in. Said they’ve taken over. Been coming in from all over the galaxy, the buggers."

"They still out there?"

The old woman seemed to remember herself. "You ask an awful lot of question, dearie. Maybe it's time you hold up your end of the bargain, hmm?"

Sinead opened her mouth to protest. If Tatooine had managed to rid themselves completely of Hutt control, then maybe other systems would follow suit. The dangerous look in the old woman's eyes told her, however, that pressing on would be a bad idea.

"Sure," she said, looking earnestly at the merchandise. "Uh, yeah … how much for the necklace?" It was the only thing that, if you squinted and stood five meters away on a foggy day might resemble jewelry. It looked like an old optic unit ripped from a droid and attached to a leather string.

"Hundred creds."

"You're joking."

"My information doesn't come cheap, girl. I can always call the guards, say you robbed me of my hard-earned knowledge."

For once, Sinead was momentarily lost for words. "That doesn't-"

"Since the Empire left, we've had to handle justice ourselves, you see, and sometimes the new guards can be a little rough."

Sinead bared her teeth in a smile. "I'll give you twenty."

"Eighty."

"Thirty."

"Seventy-five."

"Thirty-five."

"Seventy-five."

Sinead tossed some credits on the table. "Forty. That's literally the last credits I own."

The old woman snatched the credits with remarkable speed, squirreling them away in her dirty cowl.

"Pleasure doing business with you," Sinead said, stuffing the necklace into her pocket before moving on from the stall.

When she got back to the hangar, the suns had reached the top of the sky and it had impossibly gotten even hotter.

Mando came walking from the other side, his gleaming armor standing out between the bedraggled denizens of Tatooine. He sped up when he saw Sinead.

"You should stay in the ship," he said, when they reached the door to the hangar at the same time.

"You know, people usually greet each other before starting to bark commands, you should really try it."

The Mandalorian shook his head, grumbling under his breath.

“Did you manage to find work, or do we have to go back empty handed? I have a feeling that won’t go over too well with the mechanic.”

“I did, but look … does the name Fennec Shand mean anything to you?”

The color drained from Sinead's face.

"She's hiding out in the Dune Sea with a bounty on her head. I have to bring her back."

"Alive?"

"Yes."

"What a shame."

Fennec Shand’s name brought with it a very special kind of dread. Every Hutt slave had heard stories of Shard bringing back runaway slaves in a condition where they wished they were dead.

“I’ll stay in the ship.” Sinead looked around, like she expected Shand to jump out from behind the nearest hover-cart. “How long will it take?”

“I don’t know. I’m bringing this kid … it doesn’t matter.”

Sinead bit her lips. “Just make sure you get her. I don’t want her coming to Mos Eisley in a murderous rage.”

The Mandalorian moved towards the entrance to the hangar, and when the door opened, the smell of oil and metal hit them.

She wanted to get off this planet, doubly so now she knew that a vicious killer for hire had made this her home. There was nothing to do but wait.

OK so I absolutely ADORE this idea and I love writing for these four so so much!!  I couldn’t write just a couple of sentences and these turned into novel chapters, so I’m splitting your request into 4 parts. That way, I’m not just dropping a 10K word document on you asfhsfshfhsf

-The mission started out simply enough. It definitely wasn't anything outlandishly difficult: just track down an overgrown Heartless, eliminate it, and report back. Absolutely no big deal.

-Except it WAS a big fuckin deal. There he was, wandering the Land of Dragons in the dead of winter, on the edge of hypothermia and certainly not thinking straight. Perhaps he was no longer capable of feeling emotions, but frostbite was another story entirely. He knew better than to RTC without finishing  a mission, so here he was,in the dark,  trudging through waist-deep dnowdrifts on a fucking mountain to find this stupid thing.

-Xigbar had been walking since he arrived that morning. In fact, he'd started out in a slightly warmer climate miles away at this point, and he'd briefly pondered taking off his jacket to cool off a bit despite the risks. Now, his teeth chattered violently and he wished with every fiber of his being for a fire. Just a small one, to warm his toes and keep his fingers firmly attached.

-In the faint light of the half-moon, he caught sight of something that stopped him dead in his tracks: a single, enormous footprint.

-Squinting into the darkness, he peered ahead and made out another, and another, heading up the mountain towards a small cluster of coniferous trees up ahead. Ah, shit. More walking.

-Before he could take a single step, a low, rumbling growl came from behind him. The Freeshooter turned, slowly, to face the biggest fucking Heartless he'd ever seen in his life.

-Glistening fangs, beady yellow eyes, twisted horns and inky black scales covered the thing. If he had to guess, Xigbar figured the thing was at least twelve feet tall and built like a tank.

-As he discovered, it was fast, too- even its eyes, glowing bright in the darkness, were impossible to track as the thing closed the distance between the two. It swiped at him with claws like kitchen knives and put him on the defensive immediately. No doubt, the beast had his number; at every point he warped to, it was waiting with jaws wide open, ready to crunch down. It batted him around, tossing him in the air and catching him in its jaws once it had its fun.

-Between the cold and the brutal sneak-attack, Xigbar found his energy fading fast. He raised his only free hand and squeezed his eye shut, focusing the last of his energy on getting somewhere, anywhere, safe.

-......

-Look, all you were trying to do was keep your head down and out of trouble. There were a lot of vibrant characters in San Fransisco, but all you cared about was doing well at your job and enjoying your ground floor studio apartment. Affordable housing of any kind was a rare luxury in the city, and you'd struck gold with a landlady who just wanted a good, responsible, quiet tenant. For her, you checked all the boxes.

-You certainly weren't looking to get involved with anyone else. Not platonically, not romantically, not even as roommates.

-And yet, here was this man leaned against your trashcan in the alley, bleeding everywhere and groaning. Despite the summer heat, he was dressed way up in a long black trenchcoat (torn to tatters though it was), trousers, knee length boots, and gloves.

-What was his deal?

-You'd never seen a dying person before. OK, so maybe he wasn’t dying. But as it was, if anyone else were to witness him in the alley, in front of your place, bleeding out with only you around, they might assume it was you who did it. Your brain short-circuited and, unable to fully think through the situation, you dragged the man inside your apartment and slid the patio door closed.

-So there you were, panicking inside your studio with an unconscious dying dude bleeding out on the floor. What would your landlord say? Would you ever get your deposit back for damaging the green shag carpet?

-At the very least, you figured you could ask him some questions when he woke up and help him contact the cops, in case he'd lost his phone. In the meantime, you put on a pot of coffee and watched the man sleep, contemplating his features. He was handsome, with nicely tanned skin and long, dark hair shot through with streaks of brown. A deep scar ran the length of one cheek, and the opposite eye was covered with an eyepatch. He sort of looked like an anime convention escapee, you thought, but then again, folks in the city proper were often just like this.

-”Ugghhh....” the man stirred gently, and you jumped. The single remaining eye fluttered open, and you were struck by the color: bright yellow, like your little Volkswagen Beetle parked outside. He glanced around slowly at first before sitting bolt-upright and grimacing. Perhaps he forgot about his injuries.

-”Uh... are you okay?” you asked dumbly. His head whipped around to meet you, and the intensity of his glare instantly made you feel... small.

-”Yeah, definitely, just dandy,” he grunted and waved flippantly in your direction. Steadying himself against the wall, he tried and failed to rise to his feet. The man raised a mangled hand into the air in front of him, ever so briefly, then sighed and let it drop to his side. “Can you... can you maybe tell me where exactly I am?”

-”Uh, I mean- it's, uh. My apartment. San Fransisco? California? Planet Earth?”   You licked your lips and sighed. “I found you in the alley. Did you get hit by a car?”

-”Car? What are you talking about? I don’t know what any of that means. I need to get home. I need to get out of here and report back- OWWWW!” Xigbar yelped as his second failed attempt at standing brought him closer to the ground.

-”No. I don't think so, Mister. You might have a concussion.”At that point, you'd already folded the spare futon down from its hiding spot in the wall and tossed down some spare pillows and blankets.

-“That means lots of rest. I thought they were worse, but your cuts don't actually look horrible. Let's get you cleaned up and laying down, then maybe we can get you an urgent care appointment to look at your head.”

-”No. No doctors.”

-”You religious, or scared or something?”

-”Er- yeah. Somethin' like that.”

-.............

-Xigbar really knew he should have RTC'd as soon as he was able to stand. He should have reported back a week ago. Yet here he was, truly a stranger in a strange land, crashing on this good Samaritan's couch, eating good food, and- for the first time in a really long time- relaxing.

-For him, some peroxide, butterfly bandages and ibuprofen were the trifecta- his wounds cleaned up nicely and the pain was definitely more bearable.

-You called out of work for the week shortly after he woke up, feeding them a line about your brother-in-law dying or some shit; you didn't have one, of course, but nobody had to know that. He told you his name was Xigbar, and that's really all you knew. The dude was tight-lipped to say the least.

-Xigbar went with you on every trip you took. At first, he was pretty wary of your little yellow Bug, but he warmed up to it pretty quickly- at least, until you dumped the clutch and stalled on a hill for the first time. He jumped like he thought the thing was trying to kill him, and you couldn't help but laugh.

-He went with you on trips to the grocery store. You showed him your favorite restaurant (and taught him how to talk to the server like a person rather than a barmaid). He sat next to you on the sofa as you pointed angrily at the TV and complained about some goings-on in your world. He helped you uncork a cheap bottle of Trader Joe's wine, then another, and another, and you ended up talking shit about your coworkers. For you, it was the guy who followed you all over the office and wouldn't leave you alone for anything. Xigbar offered to punch him as a show of gratitude, but you assured him that no, it was really okay, the guy was just a little weird.

-On the other hand, Xigbar's work stories were different. You surmised that his office was comprised entirely of... er, vibrant characters. Like, for instance, the one that ditched work every single day by hanging out in the break room right next to his manager. There was also the “gambling addict in denial”- according to Xigbar-  who had, just a few weeks ago, literally swindled the pants off of a man in a bar. And there was the one who could, and would, electrocute and stab anyone and everyone for the slightest of infractions.

-”Uh, dude. Have you talked to HR?”

-”...What's an 'HR'?”

-”Human Resources, duh!” you sighed dramatically.

-The loud, barking laugh that followed told you that he had not, in fact, talked to HR.

-Six days had passed since you'd found Xigbar bleeding all over everything in your alley. Since then he'd improved dramatically, and when you could tell he was feeling well enough to stand on his feet, you decided that his seventh day with you would be devoted to seeing as many tourist attractions as possible together. The guy didn't have any memories, he told you, so you wanted to help him “start fresh” with as many happy ones as possible.

-This was, of course, a total lie: Xigbar remembered everything in his life, he liked to think, with the exception of how he got here. He was totally content to live the lie and continue following you around.

-In just a few days, something about you had grown on him. He couldn't quite place it, but it was something about your smile, your ripostes after his witty comments, the way your hair fell over your face when you slept, your tendency to rant and rave and scream at the endless city traffic... he didn't know what to do. For the first time in a long time, he was at a loss.

-You took him absolutely everywhere you could think of: a boat tour of the bay, a cable car ride up Telegraph Hill, a brief stop for brunch at a local bistro, gift store browsing, and finally a walk across the Golden Gate Bridge to watch the sun set. The roads were more peaceful than they normally were, even for a Sunday evening. Perfect, you thought.

-If Xigbar had a heart it would have been racing: being near him made his mind do backflips and twist itself into knots. He enjoyed being there, but more than he liked the sight of the setting sun, he loved the wind in your hair and the glimmer of joy in your eyes. Those beautiful eyes.... God dammit.

-”Hey, let's take a picture!”

-”Huh??”

-Before he could stop you, you'd produced your phone from your pocket and turned on the camera.

-You held the phone in front of the two of you, snapping a seies of pictures, and drew it close to examine. In all of them, Xigbar smiled even wider than you had- genuinely, not his usual, wolfish grin.

-He has such a nice smile, you thought.

-He peeked over your shoulder at the picture, too, and felt his chest tighten in a way he'd nearly forgotten.

-.......

-After that, Xigbar knew it was time for him to head back. Xemnas would surely drill him about his whereabouts. Xigbar thought it odd that he hadn't seen so much as a single Shadow in his time here. Even if the world was really as bad as you said it was, he supposed that a world yet untouched by darkness must have some kind of hope.

-The minute you got home, you printed out two copies of the picture of the two of you on glossy photo paper, each picture small enough to fit inside a wallet. He took it gratefully from you and turned it over in his hands, the tightness in his chest creeping back.

-”This has been a really great time. Thanks for takin' such great care of me. You really got a knack for it,” he started. Suddenly your chest, too, felt heavy. “But I really oughta get back to my life. Boss Man's gotta be wonderin' about me by now, ya know? Same with yours.”

-”Yeah... I guess so,” you sighed. It had been nice having him around, despite the rocky beginning. Your eyes swept over his lithe figure and settled on his face- angular, ruggedly handsome, and watching you intently for a follow-up to your response.

-”I'm actually going to miss you,” you admitted.  “Who's gonna sass me for running stop signs and stalling on hills? Or talk shit about my coworkers with me? I hope I get to see you again. Please don't be a stranger.”

-He reached forward, fingertips brushing over your face, and tucked a strand of hair behind your ear. You didn't brush him off when he laced his fingers through your hair, and when he pulled you in for a kiss, you grabbed his coat and pulled him in as close as you could.

-He drew away sooner than you would have liked. Than you would have both liked, really.

-”I'll make a point to stop back by, 'kay?” he assured you. With a sad smile, he lifted a hand and was surrounded by wisps of inky black and purple smoke. Just like that, he was gone.

-”W-what?” Wide-eyed, heart racing, you glanced around your apartment and resisted the urge to scream.

-”What the FUCK was that?!”

-.................

-As soon as Xigbar was back within the walls of the castle, he realized he'd fucked up.

-”Aww, shit!” There was no way she hadn’t seen the corridor of darkness, and there wasn’t really a good way to explain it, either.

-Mortified, and more than a little tired, he reached into his pocket and checked to make sure the picture was still there. Xemnas could wait until tomorrow; he'd sleep on his little snafu and figure out what to say the next time he visited you.

Chapter 2

“You’re a pilot, right?”

Van glanced up from his drink at a girl in a rather drab beige robe cinched tight around her body that covered most of her face. The robe was immaculate, without spot or wrinkle despite the squalor of their surroundings. He couldn’t help cocking a brow; if she was attempting to go unnoticed, she wasn’t doing it very well. She carried herself far too proudly, kept her shoulders too square, held her head too high. But there was a craze behind her eyes, one that spoke desperation, He scratched at his chin for a moment as he looked around the cantina. Nobody seemed to be paying attention. Seemed nobody had noticed her. This sort of hire had a tendency to get him into trouble… but having spent the last of his credits on that fill-up, Van wasn’t exactly in any position to turn her down.

“Uh, yeah.” He smiled. “Van Taris, pilot-for-hire. You got somewhere to be?”

The girl nodded, frantically it seemed to Van’s eyes. “An orbital station, above Bonumaan.”

In the back of his head, Van felt a twinge of excitement spark. Bonumaan was a ways out. That kind of a trip.... that would be the ticket right there. But he wasn’t fool enough to say as much aloud, instead feigning a half-sneer. “Ick… Never liked Bonumaan,” Van replied. “So muggy everywhere you go… least, where I’ve been. Big planet, all that.”

“But you can get me there, yes?”

“Of course, yeah, but uhhh, y’know... not free.” Van pulled his sleeve back and began punching in a few quick calculations on his wrist console. It was a simple little gadget, mainly just used for this exact purpose. “Lemme see… We’re on Natoth, and Bonumaan is about… 2400 parsecs Rimwards... rounding down, anyway, to save you money.” Van winked at the girl. People usually liked that bit. “That’s gonna be a couple days’ travel… maybe we can stop over on Takodana--”

“No! Please, we have to be as fast as possible.”

“Alright, alright! No stops…” Van continued, changing his calculations. “So accounting for fuel cost these days, food and water for the road, plus my extra twenty percent…” A moment of further calculation, then a quiet ping from the console. “That’ll run you 1680 NRC.”

“Can you take Imperial?”

Van frowned. “Sorry, I… people still do Imperial? That was… that was kinda before my time. I’m really sorry.”

“It’s alright, nevermind…” The girl dipped a hand into her robe and pulled out a stack of 500-NRC chips. Four, to be exact. Van licked his lips; that was a big fat tip.

“Now, I can’t make exact change, you gotta understand…”

“It’s fine,” the girl urged. “Just… please. I have to hurry.”

Van nodded, turning back and draining the rest of his drink. It was an effort to hide his excitement. 2000 credits… back in the day, that would have been enough for a pretty decent used speeder bike. Nowadays… well, Van would put it to good use. Maybe get the Bird shopped up, see if he couldn’t improve her fuel-rate so that his current situation didn’t happen again. Between the creds, and his tank filled up now… Van liked his odds of making it home.

“Alrighty, you got yourself a pilot. If you’ll follow m-ohhh…” The pilot shook his head as he stood up from his stool. He never drank anything too strong, but perhaps that had been a bit of a chug. He cleared his throat and got his feet back under him. “Okay, okay. Follow me, Bluebird’s this way!”

Van led the girl on a quick jaunt out of the bar and across town, in the chilly Natoth air. This particular hemisphere was hitting the middle of winter, and things on this system got particularly cold, cold enough to build up ice on the windows of any structure without proper heating. He liked Natoth well enough, but he didn’t have the blood for it. He blamed Naboo for that one.

Rinng met him outside his ship, covered in grease. Van produced his last 5-credit chip and dropped it into the mechanic’s hand. He would have tipped more, but he was going to need every credit of that 2000.

“Hey, hold on before you take off,” Rinng called after the pair. Van turned curiously back to the tendril-headed fellow. “I noticed a bit of buildup around the base of your cannon, so I went ahead and cleaned it off for ya.”

“Oh, thanks man! You really didn’t have to do that.”

The Nautolan waved the comment aside. “I’d go ahead and fire up the bioshields, get started warming those windscreens up. You know how bad the ice gets these days.”

“Thanks again, Rinng. See ya soon.” Van offered a sloppy salute as he opened the Bluebird’s hatch and led his passenger inside. As he eased himself back into his seat at the helm, he heard the klik-ssssssssssssss of the station’s fuel line disconnecting. As he began firing up the ship, the fuel tank showed at full capacity. While that was always a good sight, Van still couldn’t shake an odd feeling about this gig. Last time he was on Natoth, he picked up a shady character… admittedly he’d been more obviously sketch than this lady, but he’d picked him up in the Cantina just like her. Cheap scum didn’t even leave a tip, and Van was pretty sure he saw the creep try to swipe his blaster on the way out the door. All said creep got away with was a holster… which Van had to replace, since the creep apparently just up and disappeared a day after he left the Bird and couldn’t be hunted down. Either way, this gig still seemed on the verge of being sketchy, but these days… again, 2000 is 2000.

Van grinned as the engines roared to life, and the Bluebird began to lift up out of the station. He quickly pulled up his astrogation chart, plotting a course for Bonumaan, past Takodana--avoiding open space, for Rinng’s sake--as the ship lifted itself up through the atmosphere.

“So!” Van called, turning to see the girl strapping herself in. Nearly swallowing his words, the pilot hurriedly secured his own safety belt as well. “Once we make the jump, that’ll put us just past Takodana, at which point we’ll swing around the planet and make a second jump to hit Bonumaan. Normally I’d just shoot straight there, but I’ve heard about some, uhh… well, some unsavory activity goin’ on right in that sector. Do hope you don’t mind.”

“What sort of unsavory activity?”

“Fighter Jockies,” Van replied with just a hint of a sneer. “Pirates. Like to blast apart good honest travelers, then pick at whatever’s left of their ships like animals.”

“Sounds like you’ve encountered them before.”

“I have,” Van said grimly. “I was lucky I’d just hooked my cannon controls up to the helm, because I didn’t have a gunner with me. If I hadn’t sprung for the upgrade, they prob’ly woulda blown me right outta lightspeed, scattered what was left of me across the whole parsec.”

“How would they fire on you at lightspeed? No weapon can fire that quickly.”

“Not a cannon. Some of ‘em have these big ol’ blades strapped to the flanks of their fighters. So long as they can swing in beside you, they’ll carve your ship wide open.”

“That’s horrid!”

“You’re absolutely right,” said Van, “which is why it’s such skiff that the Senate can’t decide on what to do about it.” He paused for a moment. “Uhh, pardon my language.”

“It’s fine.”

Van turned back to the helm. “Anyway, I’m gonna take us around the other end of Tako just to be on the safe side, alright? If it helps, I can offer you back 20 credits.”

“Don’t worry about the money, I just need to get to that station soon…”

“Don’t suppose you have any reasons for the express treatment you’d like to share?”

The girl frowned. “I’m sorry, but I can’t say.”

Van held up a hand. “Totally cool, pretend I didn’t even ask.”

They had just passed into the void of space, pinpoints of starlight shining through the blackness stretched out forever before them. Van wrapped his fingers around the warp switch and turned back to his passenger. The girl pushed back into her seat and offered a single nod of confirmation. The pilot whipped back forward and slowly pushed the switch forward. The stars stretched and shone brighter and brighter, until the blackness of space gave way to a swirling vortex of shimmering blue hyperspace.

“Beenine. Stabilize, please.”

“Of course, love,” came a voice from overhead.

The girl jumped. “What was that?”

“Oh, that’s Beenine. She useta be a droid, but then we got into a scuffle with an ex-Imp cell. One of ‘em had one of those riot batons, Beenine took a hit. Lucky me, I was flying into Nar Shaddaa at the time, so I swung by a chop shop, got her patched up as best I could. Beenine, say hi!”

Van pointed up over the console, where built into the ship itself was installed the round head of a protocol droid. The girl let out a little gasp as the droid’s illuminated eyes.

“Nice to meet you, love. Designation B9-V at your service. Welcome to Taris Travels, ready to do all we can to make your travels as smooth and swift as possible.”

The girl blinked profusely for a moment, but she nodded. “Pl-uhh, pleasure to meet you.”

After a moment longer, the Bluebird’s pressure-stabilizers kicked in, alleviating the force pressing the ship’s occupants into their seats. Van heaved himself up from his chair and stretched. “So!” he started, “lemme show you where everything is. Don’t worry, she’s a real small ship… sure you noticed on the way in.”

The tour was brief. Van had two sleeping quarters on opposite ends of the Bluebird, one for himself and one for his passenger, or two for his passengers if he was flying for more than one. The pilot’s seat was a perfectly fine napping spot… usually. Foodstores and a very, very rudimentary kitchen took up most of the lower deck, and the rest of the ship was either working parts or storage. Van made a point to keep things cozy. Sure, it was a source of occasional complaints, but what did it matter? This ship wasn’t a home to anyone but Van, and Van liked things the way he had them.

“I believe I’ll retire for a bit, if it’s all the same to you,” said the girl. “Forgive me, but it’s been…”

“Hey, I get it,” said Van. “That’s what the beds are for. Take a load off. I’ll be up here keepin’ an eye on things.”

The girl bowed, and disappeared into the hallway. Van turned back to the swirling hyperspace before him.

Beenine’s head swiveled down to look at her pilot. “So what do we know about her?” her voice came from a smaller speaker on the console now, rather than the overhead speakers.

“Not a thing,” Van replied. “Picked her up in Sen-Trill.”

“Sen-tr--” Beenine sighed, an exaggerated sort of sound. “Captain, we’ve discussed this, nothing good comes out of Sen-Trill.”

“Well that doesn’t change the fact that we’re out of work,” Van shot back. “She gave us 2000 creds, we can’t afford to turn that kind of money down!”

“Is this about Life Day?” Beenine groaned. “We’ve had this conversation a thousand times! Just Comm your mother, she can take care of it!”

“And I’ve told you a thousand times, I’m not doing that! I’m a grown man, I don’t need a handout from my mother.”

“Your credit account says differently.”

“Bee! We literally just got 2000!”

“And before that, you had six.”

“Oh, shut up and plot us a course!”

Both pilot and droid let out exasperated half-shouts as they went back to their respective duties. Van would never think about wiping Beenine’s memory, but times like this she just tested his patience so much…

Just keep flying, Van thought to himself as he gazed out the windscreen. His eyelids grew heavy, and he felt weariness settling on his shoulders like a great weight. Everything will work out fine if… if you just keep… keep... flying...

BACKGROUND

the second-youngest child out of four, hazel was home-schooled for the first half of her life. with two working parents in agriculture, it became harder and harder to make the time for schooling, especially as it got more obvious she was gifted.

her siblings were content with settling into inheritance of the farm. hazel had never warmed to the idea and instead asked questions about the many books she’d pick up on a weekly trip to a local library, about why stars blinked - things her parents just weren’t equipped to do. 

in her first year of secondary school she attended a public school, with long commutes and seemingly little difference made. it was by luck she received a scholarship for a private girls school, but it meant she had to move away. hazel nearly gave up from homesickness several times, only finding it easier towards the end of her schooling.

while her parents wanted hazel to go into science, her imagination ran far too much to be contained to a clinical space and equations. she had the aptitude for almost everything, but a hankering desire to simply write had never left her all through childhood. she chose to go into literature instead

the only reason she wound up in livingstone, rather than a prestigious university at home, was she spun a globe and wherever her finger landed, she went ( cliche i know ). she’s on a partial scholarship here.

hazel wasn’t particularly close to either kieran or michael, having floated between social groups every now and then when she wasn’t holed up in her dorm writing. she’s always kept a close eye on things, preferring to be a quiet bystander that listens in.

the only reason she got involved with the watershed app was for writing inspiration. having been mostly detached from the people affected, hazel has used the app for bits and pieces she can weave into her pieces.

TL;DR: karim bakhoum is a thirty-five year old professor of photography whose main goal is to be left alone by the world, and the only two (2) things he believes in are the redemptive power of art and the hope that there is some kind of fundamental . despite having a very interesting power that could probably be helpful to heroes or villains, he doesn’t really think any of that’s for him. again, he’s kind of a self-isolating type, so the whole idea of “leagues” generally is not for him. unless someone convinces him, maybe (good luck, my dudes). he mostly uses his power to make his photography more innovative, which is about the most lowkey possible option. keeping things secret is probably safer, and he has a lot of practice keeping major secrets.

HISTORY; 

karim bakhoum was born to a fairly average family in crystalline. he had a younger sister who was born two years after him, but overall, things were easy. his father was a bank teller and his mother worked nights at a laundromat. of course, he was different back then. from a young age, though, he attached to photography as a hobby. back then it was cheap - a disposable camera and getting his mom to let him develop whatever pictures he took. he’s always liked certain things - more destroyed or warped images, different angles, and light.

some of his earliest memories are ending up at the laundromat with his mom in the evenings until his dad dropped by to pick them up. he still goes to laundromats sometimes even though he has a functioning washer and dryer to sit around and think out problems. the noise is soothing, a good way to get out of his own head (a tendency he would later realize was probably some early dysphoric feelings), and he just likes it there. it was the most normal part of his life.

so then there’s all the not normal. his powers started really showing up in earnest during middle school, and he started experimenting with them in secret. things didn’t always go well. light produces a lot of heat, and he would sometimes blow out bulbs by accident or otherwise have to avoid drawing attention to himself. he was smart enough to know what people might do. over time, he started using it to make his photos more interesting and won a few high school photo competitions while working part-time at the laundromat with his mother.

as a naturally anxious kid whose anxiety would start to increase as he got older, things got worse over time as he came out as trans once in college after exploring his relationship to his gender throughout high school, and finally got out of the house. more displacement led to more self-isolation, and he sort of sunk further into art. he wanted stability, though, and ended up heading towards teaching rather than a pure photography career, although he does have his share of galleries and exhibitions under his belt.

he doesn’t really like the idea of leagues. he thinks that kind of organization on either side is just going to collapse and hurt more people, which is why he maintains a very careful neutrality when it comes to those things. he doesn’t  talk about his power much, he especially keeps it out of the classroom.

of course, a lot of situations could make that neutrality crack, as much as he tries to maintain it. try to hurt him, try to hurt someone he likes, and he might at least get in the way.

he has a very happy and well-maintained ragdoll cat named jules. that’s his Floppy Boy.

Matt’s so relieved to be inside that he almost slips on the patch of bare linoleum in the doorway to his room.  His shoes are wet from wading through the soupy trenches of snow that criss-cross the quad.  It’s the first full day of classes after the holiday break, but the campus still seems winterized, as if maintenance isn’t expecting students back for a few more days.

Matt breathes in sharply and reaches for the wall, his cane dropping from his limp grip.  He’s not too impressed with the way the air burns on its way out of his throat.  He feels like he could cough up a fish hook.  And there are another 15 or so scraping around in his sinuses.

Matt almost expects to hear the tinkle of fine metal hitting the floor.  The sound of his cane bouncing off something big and hollow catches him off guard, but it brings him back to reality.  His brain makes the jump, the oh of realization, even though the rest of the faculties necessary to think in words haven’t caught up yet.

“Whoa there.”  Swiveling wheels bump over a ridge and grind to a stop on the industrial-grade carpet.  Foggy’s suitcase falls over almost immediately.  “Hey, buddy.”  His voice hitches as he bends to right it, and he hands the cane back to Matt upside-down.

The tip is freezing and gritty against Matt’s palm.  “Oh,” he replies lamely.  His ability to speak in multi-syllabic words is still offline.

“Whoops.”  Foggy straightens up and flips the cane.  Matt hears the sleeve of his friend’s sweatshirt brush the body, worn jersey swishing against worn jersey.  Presumably he’s holding out the cane and waiting for Matt to take it.  But Matt doesn’t need it now; their tiny dorm room is easy to navigate without it, even when stray suitcases pose a trip hazard. Maybe Foggy forgot.  Or leftover Christmas cheer is making him extra polite.

“Here ya go, Matt.”

Foggy seems casual enough, but Matt’s ears are ringing, and he doesn’t have enough input from his other senses to tell if he’s putting on airs.  Fear and stress induce observable changes, like quickened heart rate and a sour tang to the air.  But mild concern sounds like nothing and smells like potato chips and Downy.

A drip escapes Matt’s nose and shivers for a moment before it runs down his upper lip.  He wipes the moisture with the back of his hand, cringing a little at the savagery of it.  Foggy’s not exactly clean and tidy, but Matt still expects him to unleash a comment or two about acting civilized.

“I’ll just put it here for you.”  Foggy steps around his suitcase and leans the cane against the wall beside Matt’s bed. “Alright?”

“Hm?”  Was that a question?  Is he supposed to answer?  Matt jars himself out of the murky world of memory just as he remembers where he was criticized with such pre-Columbian terminology.  Sister… what was her name?  The one who was a missionary in Asia.  Or was it Africa?

Matt’s wristwatch slides an inch or so up his forearm, pulling hairs painfully taut between the icy metal and tender skin. He forces his thoughts through the intervening decade at warp speed, trying to focus on now.  On whatever Foggy just asked, or didn’t ask.  “Yeah,” Matt says with a wince.

There’s a beat of awkward silence, then the fan of the heater kicks on with a whine, and a gust of hot, dry air blows down from the vent in the ceiling.  Matt expects it to feel good.  Compared to the drafty halls of the orphanage, a room with a direct connection to the heating system is a luxury.  He supposes somewhere in the depths of his brain he’s glad to be rid of the chill in his bones, but the relief is lost in a slick of clamminess beading on his forehead.  A minute ago he could excuse his malaise as tiredness.  But now Matt just feels sick.

“Huh?”  It’s Foggy’s turn to be confused.  Matt analyzes his reaction like a brain teaser, grateful for the distraction from what’s quickly becoming nausea.  Foggy hadn’t uttered a full word, but his voice was full of the drawn-out, wistful cadence that comes with a stretch of the short-term memory.  He’s trying to remember if what Matt said jives with what he originally asked.

“You ok, bud?”  He must’ve decided it didn’t.  Foggy pulls his pop-up hamper out of Matt’s desk chair, spinning it around and throwing the nylon bag into a slippery heap on his side of the room.

Matt wonders if he’s pale.  He’s on the point of shrugging and saying he’s fine, but Foggy keeps talking.

“I was gonna ask if you wanted to go to a party, but I’m gonna go ahead and go with no.”  He puts his hand on Matt’s shoulder and squeezes a subtle invitation for him to sit.

The touch of Foggy’s palm doesn’t typically feel like barbed wire.  Especially not a gentle gesture through two layers of clothing.  The problem’s not with Foggy, though.  Mat knows it’s all on him.

“How’d you guess?” Matt tries to joke as he sits.  He doesn’t do a good job, but his head gives a renewed throb anyway. It’s like attempting to be funny has drained another reserve from his energy bar.  He leans forward and rests his elbows on his knees, head tilted sideways and his cheek pressed against the bony ridges of his knuckles.  The difference in temperature between his hands and his face is extreme.  The whole setup feels precarious, like he could tumble forward onto the carpet at any moment.

“Oh, something about your color,” Foggy says.  He moves his suitcase again, tucking it against the foot of his bed and retracting the handle.  “It’s like the snow outside.”  He laughs sympathetically.  “And that’s not the fresh, pretty kind.”

So it’s worse than Matt thought.  He’s past pale, onto grey.  “Thanks,” he mutters.  Then, “Sorry.”  He takes off his glasses and rubs his eyes, though he’s trembling so much he practically sticks his thumb through his orbit.  It hurts, but not the spot he poked.  Pins and needles erupt under Matt’s cheekbones.  He isn’t sure if he’s going to sneeze or throw up.

“Nah, apologize to yourself, man.”  Foggy’s shoes cross the room, and Matt hears him pulling tissues out of the box. “Here.”

“I’m ok.”  Matt pinches his glasses in one hand and the bridge of his nose in the other.  He doesn’t want to let go of either.  Even thinking about moving brings a threatening knot to his throat.

“No, you’re not.  Trade you.”  Foggy snags the glasses and stuffs the tissues between Matt’s fingers.  “Like Indiana Jones.”  He’s a little less coordinated, but he laughs anyway.

“Stealthy.”  Matt sniffles and reluctantly dabs under his nostrils.  His ears are plugged up, but the sound of the Kleenex scraping against his stubble still seems loud.

“Yeah, well.”  Foggy grabs the creaky wicker basket from atop the microwave.  It was a lucky dumpster find at the beginning of the previous semester, and it’s been useful as a mobile medicine cabinet.  For as sloppy as Foggy can be when it comes to things like cleaning the shoes that got vomited on at a kegger back in October, he’s surprisingly good at staying organized.  He’d arranged all the boxes and bottles of over-the-counter remedies according to function and even offered to get braille labels printed.  Matt said no.  But thanks.  He didn’t go into the details of the smelling and feeling he uses to tell what’s what.  He did buy a clean set of shoelaces, though, and re-threaded Foggy’s Nikes one night after he was asleep.

Matt remembers the smell of beer and bile too well.  The snot he’s been swallowing all day bubbles a threat , making his gut feel tight and sore somewhere around mid-chest.  He swallows hard and tries to forget about it.

“That’s the kind of cold it’s easy to sneak up on.”  Foggy paws through the bottles of pills and packets of lozenges.  “But I think I’d hear you coming a mile away.”

“Hm.”  Matt’s positive that the chills, the nausea, the gunk in his lungs all point to something a touch more severe than a cold.  He’d stay in denial if he thought he could, but he’s beginning to seriously doubt he’ll make it to class tomorrow.  If he can even get out of bed at all.  Foggy will fuss over him regardless, but in the choice of sooner or later, Matt would prefer later.  “A party, eh?” He changes the subject.  “Bit soon, isn’t it?”

Foggy’s been back at school for, what, eight hours?  He hasn’t finished unpacking yet.  It might take him the rest of the week to see his neatly folded jeans and boxers back into his dresser, but that’s beside the point.  Who goes to a party on a Monday night?  Boozers and troublemakers.  Not Foggy.  And definitely not Matt, even when isn’t feeling like death warmed over.

“Well, maybe party is the wrong word.”  Foggy sets a sloshing bottle down on the edge of Matt’s desk, then a rattling one. “Cough medicine and ibuprofen,” he says.  “I thought we had dayquil, but looks like you’ll have to take the components individually.  Want me to dose you?”

“I can do it.”  

It’s not a lie.  Matt can.  It’s not exactly a smooth process, rubbing the pad of his thumb against the raised lines on the side of the little measuring cup, then holding his ear close as he pours, listening and feeling for minute changes in vibration when the liquid reaches the proper level.  He’s more worried about his gag reflex, and he’d rather not have an audience, just in case the syrupy medicine doesn’t go down so well.  “So…”  Matt reaches for the thread of the conversation.  “It’s not a party?”

“You ever played white elephant?” Foggy asks.

“No,” Matt replies, almost defiant in his honesty.  “I know what it is, though,” he adds quickly.  He’s not in the mood for an explanation.  Something about the concept of people buying each other lame gifts on purpose rubs him the wrong way.  The cheap stuffed animals and flimsy ping pong games the nuns handed out can be twisted into something goofy when he retells the stories, but they weren’t supposed to be.  In the years since, Matt’s flip-flopped, wondering how anyone could think dollar store merchandise would delight children who were all smart enough to know about the Toys R Us catalogue.  Then the predictable guilt hits, and he wonders how horrible of a person he is for expecting to get anything at all.

“Well, this is like the white elephant of white elephants,” Foggy prattles on.  “I guess it’s something the law students do every year?  It said annual on the flyer.”

“Must be, then.”  It must be the mucous sticking to the walls of Matt’s throat that make him sound like such a dick.  He certainly isn’t doing it on purpose.  At least, not too much.

“Anyway,” Foggy says, his eye-roll obvious.  “You bring your most ridiculous Christmas gift, or the one you’re most eager to get rid of, and pan it off on somebody else.  For example…”  He trails off as he unzips a pocket on his suitcase.  “Behold.  The Little Book of Yoga.”  Foggy reads aloud in a voice rather like an impresario announcing what’s behind the curtain at a freak show.  “Simple poses to change your life!”

Matt coughs out a laugh.  “Is that from your mom?”

“Grandma, actually,” Foggy says a little guiltily.  “I feel kind of bad giving it away, but it’s not like I’m gonna use it…”  Matt assumes he’s shaking his head.  Usually he can hear Foggy’s hair whipping around his chin, but his last thick swallow made his ears pop.  The echo is yet to die down.

“Can’t beat the logic,” Matt offers.  A wave of sickly heat washes over him again, reminding him that he meant to take off his coat and lie down.  “I don’t have anything to trade anyway.”  Matt wiggles out of his jacket, uncomfortably aware of gaping sweat stains in his armpits.  He undoes the top few buttons, just enough to lessen the constricting feeling around his neck a little.  He isn’t usually shy about undressing in front of Foggy, but today it seems unnecessarily embarrassing, like baring his body only ups the factors that make him different, that make him lesser.

Matt doesn’t say that he didn’t get a single present this year.  He doesn’t need to.  Foggy already knows, Matt can tell.  He probably observed and inferred, like a proper lawyer-to-be.  He probably noticed there weren’t any new knick knacks on Matt’s side of the room and added that to his choice to stay at school for intersession classes despite his perfect GPA.  But goosebumps prickle up Matt’s arms, half suspicion and all fever.  Can Foggy smell it on him?  His poverty?  His pitifulness?

“You could wrap up that Delsym.  Bet somebody would enjoy it.”  Foggy chuckles.  When Matt doesn’t reply, he drops into a more serious tone.  “For real, though.  Get some rest.  I’ll give you some space.  You probably got all used to life without me, and here I am, mucking things up right when you’re not feeling good.”  He laughs again, but this time it’s different. The words are only funny because they’re true.

“No, Fog, it’s fine.”  Matt stands up and toes off his shoes, as if that somehow changes the atmosphere between them. “I’m fine.”

“Matt…”  Foggy gives him a gentle push in the direction of his bed.  “Go to sleep.  You sure you don’t want me to measure out your meds?”

“I’m sure.  You go have fun.”

“Ok.”  Foggy sighs.  “If you need something, call me.  Otherwise, I’ll stay out of your way.  See if I can get some blonde bombshell to take me home for the night.”

“So…”  Matt muses, turning down his blankets.  “Back by midnight?”  He smiles, even though it hurts.

“Ten-thirty, probably.”  Foggy picks up his keys.  “See ya.”

“Yeah…”  The word still hangs in the air after Foggy closes the door.  The room feels empty without him.  Colder, too.  For as much as Matt wanted him to go, now he wishes he still had Foggy’s soft, bumbling presence to distract him from the workings of his own fevered brain.

It wasn’t your department or your business, but something big was happening in the BAU. You stepped out onto your floor with the box of pastries in your hand. Shit, now who were you supposed to give your apology donuts to? Improvising, you went to your Chief’s office. If anyone knew anything about what was going on downstairs, he would know.

“Chief? I brought food in and figured you’d like first dibs.” You never sucked up, this would alarm anyone else, but luckily your boss was a bit on the thick side. Physically and mentally.

“Thanks Turner, didn’t peg you as a sharer.” He appraised his choices without getting out of his seat.

“Yeah, well, I was going to try and butter up the BAU, but the floor was a little crowded this morning. If you know what I mean.”

“Yeah, best to give them some space, besides we’re working on random sweeps of public transportation for the rest of the week. Hope you brought yourself some coffee.”

You groaned, but the desk work was better than having to worry about suiting up for field work. By the end of your shift you knew that whatever the BAU was working on dealt directly with Homeland Security and the NSA. The surveillance your team had been assigned suggested an active terrorist threat, but nothing was leaked or narrowed down beyond general sweeps for suspicious packages or behavior in crowds. It was extremely anticlimactic.

Even after a day like the one he had, Jack’s little voice warmed Aaron Hotchner from the inside out. Haley had been considerate, letting him wake up their son for a late night phone call. He listened to an enthusiastic story that quickly got derailed by a question and then talk of what part of dreams can come true. Aaron wanted Reid’s memory in that moment, to just save this, this fleeting chat with his boy. Soon enough Haley was coaxing the phone out of Jack’s little hands on the other end of the line. Hotch half-smirked and sighed; the world kept spinning despite everything the job threw at him.

Your eyes hurt and your neck ached from the surveillance, constantly watching civilians didn’t ease your natural paranoia. You decided to lay low and keep from drawing any attention, from your co-workers or from George. You had a few places you knew well enough that could be an escape for a day or longer if you needed to disappear. The loft was one of those precautionary hideouts, though it was technically still leased in your name, you hadn’t been back since you started your “interactions” with the fugitive serial killer.

The lock groaned with the force you wrenched the key clockwise. The old wood warped near the floor causing you to kick at the door as you stepped inside. The smell of dust and the old cedar chest in the massive single room greeted you as your eyes adjusted to the darkness. It was a small space, but it held such comfort. This was a safe place, a place that reminded you who you were before you met George Foyet. Even if that person didn’t exist anymore, it was almost like you could feel her here. A ghost of your former self welcomed you home to mourn her. Taking solace in memory, you fell quickly onto the large makeshift bed of discarded pallets and stacked mattresses, along one corner of the floor.

The ringing of your work phone woke you from the fog of forgotten dreams.

“Turner.”

“Hey.” Hotch’s voice held a soothing note after the bleating ringtone.

“He lives,” You curled in on yourself, letting your eyes droop closed yet again. “That was some -* yawn* - case, huh? The cavalry arrived and everything.”

“Did I wake you? We can talk later if-“

“No! Well, yes, but I don’t mind.” You sat up, as if your unseen position could convince him of your wakefulness. “I guess this means we’re even.”

A deep exhale shuddered through the earpiece, “I wouldn’t say quite even.” Hotch’s voice dropped to conspiratorial levels, your stomach tightened at his suggestion.

“Well, then, you better pay up.” You smirked, waiting for him to back out.

“What’s your address?”

Fuck.

You flew into panic mode, quickly wiping down the small breakfast table and chairs. You grabbed a quilt out of the hope chest and threw it over the bed, the lack of pillows a blatant reminder than you didn’t usually sleep here. You muscled a window open to let in fresh air, the old paint chipping in the sill. Hotch had said he would bring over dinner, leaving you to try and clean up all the dust while hiding the starkness of the one room loft.

After two minutes of straightening the little furniture you had, you turned on your laptop and put on some music, the sound rattled through the terrible built in speakers. Finally, you glanced in the mirror. The sleep had left your face better than you had hoped and you quickly touched up your make up. Pushing your fingers through your hair as you tried to get it to lay just right. Your phone buzzed as well as the call box next to the door.

Hotch was there, you tried not to run to let him in, but the butterflies in your stomach helped carry you across the room.

How had this happened? One minute you were hiding from life and the next you’re having Pad Thai with a handsome man, his dress shirt rolled up to his elbows and his tie loosened. Hotch chuckled against your mismatched glassware, luckily the corner market sold wine and beer. There was something lighter about his posture tonight. His eyes twinkled at you across the dim room.

“Thanks for bringing over food, Hotch,” You stretched your arms and rolled your shoulders. “I don’t remember if I had lunch today.”

“Perks of the job, right?”

“Something like that,” You sipped your cheap white, letting the liquid coat your tongue. It was such a subtle drink compared to your usual whiskey. “I wanted to apologize for the other night, but you had your hands full when I stopped by.”

“Sorry to have missed you.”

“Well, you missed pastries, so it’s your loss really.”

“Either way, I’m glad we’re here now.” How could one person be this charming? It was like the role of agent melted away once he took off his suit jacket. Your eyes dragged over him and the images of what could happen when he took more off, teased at your thoughts. His smirk told you he caught you looking. His tongue darted out and your core tightened with anticipation.

A giggle bubbled up from somewhere and you broke the stalemate. Hotch’s smile softened as you finished your glass. You held up the bottle to offer him another, but the few drops left barely increased his portion. You began to clean up when his warm palm found your bare elbow. He stood, his body melding against yours with his height framing you perfectly.

Delicately he took your chin in his hand, coaxing eye contact. Whatever he found in your eyes, he welcomed, his lips raking over your jaw. Your mouth hungered for him, you kissed him desperately. This was an intimacy you had been denied for so long. His mouth was warm and his stubble pricked your skin in all the right ways. His hands roamed your body, securing you against him, until he picked you up and whisked you to the ramshackle bed.

You were used to giving over control, yet with Hotch you had been the assertive pursuer. Now, Everything had changed. You weren’t sure if it was his mood or yours, but every touch was tender. Every moment was unexpected. He tugged off his tie after letting you fall onto the bed top. You leaned back and started unfastening your pants, but his strong hands pulled your wrists back. He nuzzled against your navel and you let go.

His hands scooped your ass off the bed, giving a playful squeeze before removing your pants. His kiss found you again, your legs held him tightly to your body. Your hands threaded through his short locks, as his length pushed threateningly against your slowly soaking panties. You purred into the kiss, his lips trailing over your skin as you let him continue undressing you. When he went to unclasp your bra you sat up in alarm, you couldn’t let him see the brand.

“Just leave that bit on, for now?” You whispered, the fear of discovery sending your pulse rattling.

“Whatever you say, Y/N,” Hotch nodded, his concern fading on his features as you started undressing him in turn. Soon it was settled, he was all pale skin over layers of muscle, dark hair covered him, making him even more manly than his pristine suits or two guns could. You stroked his dick until he backed down your body, his mouth leaving an assault of heat down your torso. He kissed your covered breasts, kneading them through the fabric. God his hands were masterful.

“I believe I have a debt to pay and then we’ll see about the rest of the night,” He taunted above your sex. You slowly unfurled each leg from around his back, leaving your folds open for his taking. He started painfully slow, dragging his nose over your inner thighs. As his tongue began to open your outer folds, your head fell back, letting the sensations take over as your eyes slammed closed.

He didn’t talk, like George would have, if George ever focused on your pleasure over his domination. Hotch was meticulous, every noise or shift he adjusted or continued. Each stroke of his tongue sent you closer, his fingers dipped furtively inside you, applying a ghost of pressure on your inner bundle of nerves. He hummed against your clit, his tongue adding wide swipes as your want pooled with his saliva. He added an internal rhythm as his tongue worked seamlessly with his digits.

Your hands clutched the tattered quilt as your muscles tightened, your pelvis rocking against his face as the build up crested. You rolled your hips inward as you felt your center tighten around him. He was pleased with himself and you smirked at his arrogance.

You bit your bottom lip as he quickly wiped his hands on the blanket, dragging his glossy face over your thigh, playfully. You pushed him away, with a teasing guffaw. “Just because we’re even doesn’t mean I am going to let you use me like a napkin, Aaron.”

“I wouldn’t dream of it,” He kissed your cheek, his face lingering at your ear as your body slowly relaxed. You hated having the bra on, but it was completely necessary now. A small discomfort now for hopefully a night-full of pleasure to follow. If you were being honest with yourself, perhaps a few nights to follow. “Now where were we?” His voice was like honey, sweet and sinful.

You rolled to face him, his body folded to meet yours. His thumb caressed your cheek and he kissed your forehead. Shit, this was not something you should be allowing yourself. But the safety you felt in that moment had evaded you for so long, was it so wrong to linger in it? You knew the answer, but you lied to yourself anyway.

You leaned into his touch, letting his need build as your body pressed tighter to him. Suddenly you got lost from the mission, the retribution and the memories and you gave yourself a moment of true connection. Hotch held you closer and eased inside of you. Each inch wasn’t a conquering, but a joining. It was raw and real in a way nothing had been with George and it tore you apart. You hadn’t realized you had tears in your eyes until he was wiping them away.

“Good crying, I hope?” He murmured as he pecked at the streaks along your cheeks.

“God, yes, so good,” You moaned as he pumped inside of you. He was on his knees and you were straddling him, somehow he completely supported you. Your toes brushed the wall behind him and you leaned back, adding to his angle. With your newly secured push off point you drove back into him, sending him calling out into the night.

One week later

Jogging through the park you felt his eyes on you, you were only halfway through your route; you ignored him for two more laps. He had texted you randomly saying to keep your head up, but you hadn’t expected an impromptu meeting. You circled up and nodded towards the greasy diner across the street. He was in sunglasses again, his half grin shining at you through the bars of the plastic jungle gym.

You took the last two laps at a dwindling pace, letting George find a booth. This gave you time to compose yourself and get your head back in line. You scooted into the sticky bench seat across from him, a menu waiting on your place mat.

“Took you long enough,” He grunted.

“Being out of breath would have only drawn more attention to us,” You mumbled, flipping the plastic pages.

“I like you out of breath,” George sighed. “It’s getting closer, thanks to all of your surveillance, Y/N.”

“Anything I need to be prepared for?”

“Let’s just hope Hotch keeps coming home alone for a bit longer,” his voice gave nothing away. Your gut churned at the possibility he knew you had slept with his enemy. What the fuck did you think would happen, Y/N?! You kicked yourself, leaving your face as blank as possible.

“Direct attack then?” You flipped your coffee mug over.

“Shhh-” he held his finger up to his lips, the waitress approached with coffee and her order pad at the ready.

You ordered absentmindedly, and were soon playing with your hashbrowns as George enjoyed his short stack and side of bacon. He wouldn’t give you any details, but watched you intensely. You could feel the knife sheathed on his ankle under the table as he played footsie with you. The coffee was terrible, but you doctored it up enough to down two cups. You were not used to small talk, but he kept the conversation flowing to avoid any suspicions.

“I’ll come see you when the job is done?” He asked, waiting for your approval.

“Yeah, that’ll be great, actually.” Your lips hitched, as you swallowed down the bile that was fighting with your breakfast. He nodded, accepting it as a smirk and not distress. George stood as the check was dropped off, patting your forearm as a goodbye. You fully exhaled as the welcome bell signaled his departure.

“He left you with the bill? What an ass.” The waitress tisked.

“Well, I do make more than he does.” You shrugged and gave the older woman a solid tip.

Two days later

You had received a colorful email from Garcia beckoning you to their conference room after lunch. You brought your laptop and a fresh steno pad with you. The BAU was quiet, you assumed they were all eating together. They seemed that type of group. You, obviously weren’t that type of group. The more people in your life, the more you had to be prepared to lose. Despite every logical thought, your mouth lifted at the sight of Hotch in his office.

You bit it back, ducking your head down as you continued passed the other offices. The conference room was just like it was on your first round table session. Your evidence board wheeled to the the side, leaving their regular cases to take priority. You set your things down and inched the heavy display back to the center of the room.

“Early bird gets the worm, right?” Agent Rossi’s wizened voice greeted you as he sauntered in through the door.

“Or so they say,” you replied simply.

“I’m more of a night owl myself. You, Agent Turner? Get much sleep at night?” He settled in a chair across from yours.

“Do I look tired, Agent Rossi?” Your confusion pinching your features, you weren’t sure where this challenge was coming from.

“Not at all, though guilt and an assortment of nighttime, activities, could leave someone like you. Young, pretty, ambitious, up at night.”

“I really don’t think my nighttime activities are any of your business.” You sat down and crossed your arms over your chest like a petulant teenager. He was the original profiler and you had to be careful with each word that escaped your lips.

“Not really. But I’ll tell you what is my business. Catching unsubs. Now, the best way to do that is to have each member of the BAU focused. I’m not sure exactly your angle, and we all have an angle, my dear. But I do know Hotch. He doesn’t deserve the distraction, especially not right now.” Rossi’s dark eyes held yours as the ice ran down your spine.

The interrogation ended as Prentiss’s laugh broke through the air, she and Morgan strolled in followed by JJ and Reid. Time to get back to work.

===== "The Citadel has really changed," Shepard notes, her eyes sweeping the plaza below the restaurant after completing their reflexive check--anyone with guns, then high, then the sides, then anything that could be used for cover--that she's done since Liara met her. Liara shimmies closer, humming happily as the hard metal of Shepard's pistol presses against her ribs. She takes one of Shepard's hands and wraps it around her hip, so that she can feel the far more svelte weapon concealed under her dress and accessible by the same slit in the side that made Shepard's eyes darken when she came out of the bedroom.

"It feels less alive," Liara agrees. "The embassies and offices were re-established but...I don't feel like I'm in a city."

"Two sieges in three years. Can't blame most people for wanting to commute. Rent's cheap and so is land. A few more years and salarians won't have any living memory of the war. Someone will buy it up and build a bunch of silly houses that all look the same and viola! The Citadel rises again, tainted by humanity's worst discovery. Suburbs."

Liara chuckles. "Actually, I believe I bound my wrists to humanity's worst discovery."

Shepard's broad shoulders roll and she tilts her head towards Liara with that sloppy, crooked smile of hers. "Probably."

She chose a table that faces the outside of the presidium's ring. She did it without asking Shepard if she wanted it. It's like how her beloved hates having a door behind her, except now she sees the stars as the gateway through which death might emerge.

"She's late," Shepard mutters, glancing at the chrono that her omnitool projects.

"Ash is a SPECTRE, love. I've never found them to be the reliable sort."

"No?"

"Not about little things. Only reliable when it matters most. Like when they say they'll come back to me."

Liara softens and leans her head on Shepard's shoulder, snuggling her cheek against the cotton and trying to ignore the way it shifts and slides against the armored undershirt. Whatever her bondmate needs to feel safe. The nightmares have been fewer, no longer spilling into her brain across Shepard's sleeping skin. She's not about to complain about paranoia.

Shepard likes to keep tabs in order to rile Ashley, who is so used to the oldest sister role that she bristles at having Shepard check up on her in a way that she instinctively recognizes and resents, but also craves. Ashley can ask someone else for life wisdom rather than being forced to dispense it.

As usual, Shepard found a restaurant that utterly baffles Liara. Edsel, it said on the sign. The theme has something to do with fossil-fuel burning surface vehicles of an era almost three hundred years in the past, to the point where wrecks were recovered, repainted, treated with some alloy called 'chrome' and used to build a maze of booths.

A comedian once said that asari live long enough to do everything once except try every restaurant.

The cuisine at least, is familiar. Greasy. Savory. Meaty. She can smell the oils the cooks use and under the sharp tang of the thresher meat being seared for the pant-suited female krogan at the counter, she can smell cod and potatoes. Fish and chips was the first thing Shepard ever cooked for her. A kindness she did not ask for and would learn only years later was something Shepard liked to do after she'd treated a woman to a wild night and taken her home.

One drunk night, an amused Karin Chakwas explained that digesting fatty food lessens the blow of the hangover, at least in humans.

By using her morning-after routine on Liara before they'd ever even kissed, she was putting the sled before the goat as humans say.

Ashley approaches their table and fires off a salute.

"Commander."

Shepard smiles into her coffee.

"Gunny."

Shepard's hand lands on Liara's thigh and gives a firm squeeze. Her fingers burn where they touch, even through clothing. Whether it's the eezo in Shepard's body that could be debilitating or cancerous in a weaker specimen but she turns it into strength, or the powerful grip of the fingers, or the ten degree spread in temperature between human and asari bodies, it never fails to make Liara pause and suck in a quick breath when her hands make contact the first time in any given encounter.

Scoot," Shepard chuckles, swinging her hips along the bench to bump into Liara's.

"Oh! Of course."

They make way for Ashley on the bench. Sehpard nods to a waiter and the asari scurries over, her eyes carving a hungry path across both the humans present in nearly as lusty a manner as the black flecks growing in her eyes.

She takes beverage orders, cocking an eyebrow at Ashley's request for water. Not since the war, she told them once. Not since her hangover in her quarters after the Citadel coup.

"Never gotten used to that, skip. I don't get hit on by turian women."

"Often."

Ashley sputters into her ice water.

"That was a special circumstance!"

Ashley's nut-brown cheeks darken further.

"It doesn't count if there's burning herbs!"

"And at a fertility festival no less," Shepard chuckles. "Remote colony, good farmland, lots of turian girls who liked hunting..."

"I will pay you 10,000 credits this instant not to finish that daydream out loud, skipper."

"I'll take Harbinger triple burger with the..." She trails off, clicking her tongue as she reads over the menu which was printed on physical paper for some reason. "Why not? Salad."

"Same, gunny?" "Sure," Ashley chokes out.

"One with a Thessian greens side salad, and one with Earth greens. Earth is no-eezo. Fish and chips, pet?"

Liara shivers under the weight of the word.

Is the air thinner, or has the buzzing heat wrapping around her bones from Kate's possessiveness just made breathing harder? She reaches for her neck before realizing she's not wearing a collar. She can't, even in private. Spy drones, planted cameras, any number of things might catch it. Asari audiences wouldn't care their sex is so frequent, so shameless and so often rough, leaving snarled tangles of sheets and Liara's back or her ass outlined in sweat against the windows and slippery smears on walls where the splash of a lover's pleasure was allowed to drizzle down the paint just as it drizzled down the chin. Contrary to Shepard's red-faced vetoes of the idea, surveillance footage of them would massively improve her popularity in those stupid polls amongst maidens, and by extension, Aethyta's clout with matriarchs in the voting forums.

The collar itself would be the fatal mistake.

Human kink communities take a very different view of them. Make believe. Fake danger easily dismissed when removed, or worn throughout the day as proof of a sub's devotion. But humans abolished slavery amongst themselves and have kept to that, neither suffering it nor inflicting it save for a brief encounter with batarian savagery that ended in humanity's victory. Asari have mourned missing kin for centuries. They can't enjoy collars knowing so many of their sisters have suffered under them, or died when their masters flicked a switch. Bondmate necklaces were popular in the earlier periods of the Council era, but only ancient matriarchs who bonded before the batarians were contacted still wear them.

Wearing Shepard's dog tags on Ilium while she mourned and hoped was enough to garner more than a few disgusted glances.

"Yes please," Liara mumbles, lifting her eyes and favoring the waitress with a smile. "We're so close to Earth, after all. Fish and chips sounds lovely."

"It'll be out soon," the waitress promises but not before pausing to use her omnitool's forger to burn her contact information into the side of Ashley's water glass. Ashley stares at it numbly, like it was a grenade and not a proposition.

Kate pats her protege's shoulder.

"There, there. Heard you were doing spot checks on stuff coming in from Omega. Confiscated anything interesting lately?"

Liara has two sorts of anger: fidgety and apocalyptic.

That's day-to-day Liara anger, and Goddess bless but she's getting better at avoiding it. Having lived on a warship or in barracks from birth until retirement a few weeks before their wedding meant she wasn't housebroken.

This is the other sort of anger. The last Prothean nearly turned into a smear of shell and ichor when he derided her after Thessia's fall. A three-jawed skull cracking after a lucky blow with a warp and the Shadow Broker rising with a bellow of agony. Kai Leng's attempted backstab ending with the crack of reinforced arm bones, then his legs, then his spine being broken before Liara's barrier-hardened fists turned his ribs into a lumpy pile of shuddering scraps and she drew a dagger that ate the light around it and slit his throat.

"Love, it's..."

"...it's just a bootleg of some smut. I wouldn't take it seriously."

"Yes, exactly!" Liara cries. "Unreleased. Still time. Still time."

"You're getting a bit krogan-y, love."

"An actress is going to be portraying me. For portraying me making love to you and you think it's nothing?"

"I'll reach out through the network, I'm sure someone can slow them up, or yank a permit they need for the warehouse. And I'm sure no one cares about the porn industry awards."

Liara drops her head into her hands.

"Shepard, have you ever watched asari pornography? And I don't mean that as a trap, love. Yes or no. I won't be angry."

She is tempted to quip that that was more Joker's thing than hers, but she doesn't.

"A few. Back when. I didn't see the point, really. Just felt flat, especially once I knew what the meld was like. After...after our first time, it didn't work. Didn't do a thing for me while you were on Ilium."

Liara's eyes lift from her pacing feet and meet Shepard's. She doesn't seem ready yet to accept assurances that it was all right to pursue the Shadow Broker rather than pull up roots to hunt Collectors.

"Fornax?"

"One of the trendier studios on Earth that was trying to out-lesbian them, actually."

"Goddess."

"Li, what's wrong?"

"Go make popcorn. I'm going to check for listening devices, just in case."

She comes back to find the lights lowered and a naked Liara reclined on a throne made of what might be every pillow they own. She pats the spot beside her.

"Did I miss something?"

Liara laughs in that soft 'you silly human' way that makes warmth and sunlight spill into every crevice of Shepard's being.

"This is how asari couples watch movies together," she explains. "Intimately. So strip."

"Aye-aye, ma'am."

Curling up against Liara is one of the few things that makes organic life worth saving.

"That's Vaenia? It's...it's..."

"A political thriller about the behind the scenes work to integrate humanity into Council Space?" Liara jokes.

"I just wasn't expecting the most talked about erotic film on Ilium to be Citizen Kane, all right?"

"What?"

"Ugh. Bad example."

"Can you see why I want them to get this right, Shepard?"

Her bondmate worries her lip with her teeth and finally nods.

"Yeah. Yeah, I can. I'll make some calls."

Her bondmate spins in place, dropping one of the 'gummy bears' in the process. At least, that's what Shepard calls them. They're actually a mix of thresher maws and kalikosaurs, but apparently the original candies that inspired other races to copy them were shaped like an Earth animal called a bear. Soldier that she is, she lunges and manages to catch it before the syrup-filled atrocity stains anything.

"We're doing what now?"

Liara scrubs her hands across the aching roots of her crests. Kate bats her hands away and digs her strong thumbs in, kneading the muscles until they melt. Overly cautious as she can be when it comes to doors, security VIs and vetting everyone from carpet cleaners to house painters, Liara does love how recklessly she throws herself into giving comfort. Sometimes she slides her shirt off her shoulders and starts working her over before Liara herself is fully aware of the ache.

"You're mad at me," She mumbles, tucking her chin over Liara's shoulder and looking at the comm terminal. "Sorry."

"I wouldn't have expected you to be a prude. We've hosted a Janiris party for our friends. You've fucked me on a dozen battlefields. You fucked me until I melded without askin-"

"Which was hot..."

"Agree to disagree on not-fully-consensual melds."

"Run me through this again. The only Athamic Oaths I'm familiar with are a Justicar's Six Oaths, plus the ones I swore to you."

Liara highlights the text.

"The Oath of Inspiration is what an artist uses to exchange access for information for confidentiality."

"Which is how Vaenia alluded to operations and installations whose very existence was top secret."

"Exactly. It's an oath specifically for artists, those recognized by some guild or institute. And in some cases, portraitists or actresses or writers will swear it just for access. We're expected to behave naturally and let them into our routine and they're expected to avoid embarrassing us and use creative license and common sense about secrecy."

"So you want to invite the actresses who will be portraying us to live with us for a few days."

"It'd take several weeks, Shepard. Any performer on a production like this, asari or human or turian, would have been tutored at the same sorts of universities. Taught to take information in slowly and not to depict our breakfast routine based on one morning, but across many."

"I think I could just explain how you like your pancakes over the vid, T'Soni."

"You could. But I notice you're not complaining about the idea about letting someone watch us 24/7."

Shepard sorts through her handful of candy and picks up one of the maw-shaped ones. It's a sort of blue that shouldn't be allowed to exist, especially since she hasn't been able to find botanical records of any raspberries on Earth that color.

"What's-her-name is cute and I like the blue ones. Council and Allied races have a security review this afternoon, siame. I'll pick up Arty after. Don't wait up."

Her bondmate drops a kiss on her crests, turns on her heel and walks away without further explanation or doing anything about the steady trickle of wet that her tease and that goddess-fucked smirk caused between Liara's thighs.

"Glyph?" The drone boots up and manifests his outer shell from his cradle at her desk.

"Yes, Doctor?"

Kate can't just say something like that and leave her here to drip and shiver for hours on end. Not without consequences.

"Any and all scenes from human actress Emilia Ryder involving romantic partners. Loop. One third volume."

"Stand by."

Liara flops onto the unmade bed, relishing the smell of the both of them that mingles in the silk. She reaches blindly for her nightstand and presses her thumb to the biometrics. A bit more fumbling manages to locate the scarcely used synthcock, which is fully charged, thank the Goddess. Rummaging through the canisters in the bowl, she picks a foam-based ejaculate and presses the nozzle into the hidden inlet.

Kate hasn't used this since her last round of reparative surgery with Miranda. At her request, Miri recreated some hare-brained cybernetic and clone-tissue monstrosity ripped straight from Cerberus's worst ideas in the Lazarus project and then fused it into Shepard's body permanently. Liara argued that it was sheer insanity to implant illegal wetware from a terrorist group's project that proved so morally bankrupt that even the Illusive Man shuttered it.

Then she saw her beloved's smile as she looked at her own outline in the mirror in her slacks and noticed how her posture straightened and broadened to maximize herself in a space. Her shoulders released tensions she'd been carrying for years, so much so that Liara was never aware that the stiffness wasn't natural. She doesn't need to understand human gender to know that Shepard always felt more at ease wearing a synthcock any time she wasn't in armor or about to be, even if sex was nowhere on the horizon. She would sometimes wear one, only to take it out when she bedded Liara. Though the toy served no practical value unless she or Liara touched it, something about it anchored Shepard in her own skin, a precious thing indeed for a woman acutely aware she's wearing a once-dead body around. The permanent addition seems to have an even better effect.

"Film me and in one hour, send it to Shepard's commlink. Blackhole address."

Shepard wants to leave her a lonely, frustrated mess?

If that whine contained any actual words, she didn't catch them.

"What about that girl who came in last term that runs the student paper?"

Arty's a darker shade of purple than any other asari Shepard's ever known, so when her father embarrasses her, her cheeks and neck flush nearly to black.

"Just remember. Do both your hypos first, make her show you a STD test and wear gloves, don't dive too deep, and remember to help her up because meld or no meld, she might not remember which color her toes are."

"DAD!"

She chuckles. She's seen Arty at student-parent events. She stares at Neema Ullasi's neck like she wants to see if she can suck a hickey into it through her headscarf. Intelligent, poised, kind, fierce activist. Neema grew up on Ilium as an diplobrat whose mother remarried a local matriarch, meaning she's fluent in not only Arabic and Farsi but enough regional asari dialects that her and Arty can have inside jokes around human teachers. What's not to crush on?

Loitering around a coffee shop they have to walk past are the unholy trinity of reporters from Alliance News Network, Westerland News and Stella Incognita Broadcasting. Westerland alone, she could handle. Khalisah Al-Jilani is the second coming as far as the bosses are concerned after being the only one of their wartime correspondents to print anything but racist garbage and she relies on the Shepard-T'Sonis and their friends for that. She can yank a cub reporter's chain so it doesn't need to be swatted on the nose. ANN is a military-funded network without a war to cover, making them a wild card. Stella is trying to become some one-stop shop for all different flavors of sensationalist garbage by employing a diverse workforce of assholes from eight races and using some byzantine corporate structure that probably drove the volus who created it insane.

It's been a while since she punched a journalist. Maybe it's time.

She glances at her daughter.

"That footage uploaded?" Arty looks up at the camera drone's status lights and nods. Shepard pulls her sidearm and puts a round into the drone's thruster pack, making it wobble and smack into the back of Arty's stasis field.

"How dare yo-"

"You ambushed us in a permit-only photography zone. I gave them permission, but not you."

"You said we could!" he sputters.

"I said you two," she reminds him, pointing at the other two reporters. "Not three."

"I don't recall giving verbal approval or signing a release for footage of me or my child. Bill me for the drone."

"What about you?" the reporter demands, pointing at Artemis. "Do you agree with...that?"

"Really?" she scoffs. "After seeing my dad do that, after practically daring her to blackbag you in broad daylight, you're going to come after her daughter?"

Arty flares her barrier so hard Shepard swears she can smell the leathery musk of rachni and the permafrost of Noveria along with the choking ozone of air seared by the sheer intensity of Benezia's biotics.

She levels a volley of profanity at the reporter that would melt Wrex's plates and Kate whistles and offers her fist for a bump.

"Whoa. Learn that one from your grandfather?" Shep aims straight down the drone's lens and pulls the trigger until the pistol's heat vents glow cherry red. Just for the ANN viewers back on Earth, she puckers her lips and blows across the muzzle before holstering it with her best imitation of a cowboy's twirl.

"Mixed and matched between her and Wrex. So. Donuts? I hear there's this place that sells them with ice cream on top."

"My asari and their ice cream. Also, don't tell your mom I filled you with sugar on the way home."

She tosses her arm around Arty's shoulder.

"Glazed donut with rocky road on it?"

"Nah. I'm thinking sprinkles."

How to Break In a Pair of Leather Boots

A good pair of leather boots is an essential part of every man’s wardrobe, particularly in the fall and winter. Say you got a nice shiny pair of Red Wing boots for Christmas or your birthday, or you just wanted to splurge with your end-of-year bonus. You’re excited to lace ‘em up and wear your boots to work or out on a date, but they’re stiff and a little hard to put on, and when you walk around, they feel a little uncomfortable after a while.

That’s just part of the reality of owning a pair of boots made from leather: it’s a hard, tough material (which is why it’s so dang durable!). Leather boots thus need to be broken in before they’re comfortable for regular and prolonged use.

How do you do that though? The tried and true method is to just wear them and deal with the discomfort — sometimes including blisters — until the leather becomes softer and more comfortable. We live in the internet age though. Aren’t there any hacks or tricks to breaking them in a little quicker and without as much discomfort?

The short answer: nope. There are a few things you can do to ease the discomfort, but in general, any hacks or quick tips you see out there pose too much of a risk to the leather to be worth trying. When you’re spending $200 or more on your shoes (which is about as cheap as you can get a high-quality pair of boots), you don’t want them wrecked before you’ve gotten a chance to enjoy them for a few decades.

Below you’ll find out why some of the tricks you see online shouldn’t be utilized, as well as a few tips for easing the discomfort of the breaking-in process.

Dispelling Some Internet Tricks

In doing some initial internet research, I was presented with almost exactly what I expected to find: a few apparently quick and painless hacks that would instantly break in a pair of leather boots.

Most of what I found revolved around subjecting the leather to extremes in terms of water and heat. Leather is obviously an incredibly resistant material, so while prolonged exposure to these elements isn’t good for it, an initial blast to soften things up won’t hurt. Right? That’s how the thinking goes at least.

Thankfully, I didn’t trust the internet, and called up a local Red Wing shoe store to get the dope on these shortcuts rather than trying them out firsthand and possibly ruining a nice pair of boots.

Water Exposure

I saw tips out there ranging from submerging the boots in a tub full of water, to wearing wet socks in an attempt to get the leather to mold more to your feet.

The logic of this line of reasoning isn’t all that crazy. Water immersion does make leather more pliable, and in fact many leather projects rely on the material being soaked for the sake of molding it into some shape (like a knife sheath). Leather boots have a blue collar heritage, that typically isn’t just a matter of aesthetics: you generally should be able to wear them in wet and messy conditions, and have them hold up just fine. Thus manufacturers themselves sometimes used to in fact recommend breaking in their boots with the water exposure method.

It’s hard to find any that do anymore, though. The problem is that water immersion can actually shrink your boots, doing the opposite of what you intended.

Plus, while not a guarantee, it’s sure a possibility that the water could warp or otherwise damage not only the leather, but the soles as well, especially in more modern-style boots that have a cushioned insole vs. just a hard leather one. While your boots should be fine when worn out on a rainy day, that’s not quite the same as giving them a prolonged soaking in a bucket of water.

Bottom line: Avoid this route.

Direct Heat Exposure

The other primary line of thinking I saw in terms of break-in hacks was heat exposure. Again, from a purely logical perspective, this idea isn’t too bad. Heat also makes leather more pliable, so putting a hair dryer on them or putting them next to a fire should help, right?

It can, but the risks to your leather aren’t worth it. Prolonged or extreme heat exposure will dry the leather and make it crack. It can also warp the material and change the leather’s color. While you’ll find plenty of sources out there that say a hair dryer on low heat is okay, the vast majority of manufacturers recommend avoiding exposure to any direct heat source like that.

The primary problem with heat is that you just don’t know how your particular leather boot will react to it, or at what point the heat becomes too much and starts causing damage (which isn’t always apparent; fibers can start to dry and crack before it’s visible to the eye).

Avoid this route too.

Tips for Breaking In Your Boots the Right Way

Keep in mind at the outset that every brand of leather boot wears and breaks in differently. My Chippewa boots are still getting broken in a few years later, but my Nisolo Andres — my new favorites — wore just about perfectly right out the box. Some discomfort at first is expected (especially if you try to wear them all day), but definitely not pain.

1. First, ensure the right size. Sometimes you’ll see folks advocating buying boots a half-size or even full size too small so that when they break in, they’ll be perfect. In some cases this can be accurate (like with Chippewas), but not all. I advocate for always buying your leather boots from the manufacturer directly, either online or in retail. Going to a big box store and asking about how their boots are sized isn’t going to work very well. The manufacturer, on the other hand, will have the most accurate sizing information and be able to guide you. It all depends on how the leathers they use have been made and treated.

In general, it’s okay if the boot seems a little narrow — leather can expand out to the sides fairly easily. On the other hand, you don’t ever want to buy a boot that’s too short. The toe box and heel are the thickest, most rigid parts of the shoe and aren’t going to move much.

2. Use a leather conditioner/oil. Right when you get your boots, apply some leather conditioner (I like Chamberlain’s Leather Milk) or mink oil. These will help soften the leather, and won’t cause the damage that heat or water will. Apply weekly until the shoes are broken in, and then monthly or so after that as part of your leather care routine.

3. Ease into it. Wear them around the house, in thick socks, for 1-2 weeks. While it’s true that simply wearing your shoes is the best way to break them in, it doesn’t have to be such a painful process. Before wearing them all day at work or heading out on the town as a method of brute force adaption, wear them around the house with a pair of thick socks. You want it to feel tight and even a touch uncomfortable (in terms of tightness, not pain). Wear two pairs if needed.

There are a few benefits to employing this method.

First, when you wear your boots around the house you tend to be up and down a lot, giving your feet a rest between use rather than standing or walking around at a constant clip for an extended period of time.

Second, when you wear a thick pair or two of socks, you end up stretching the leather just a bit. Producing this kind of gradual pressure is preferred, as that’s healthiest for the material. At the same time, you’re generating some heat from the friction and warmth of the heavy socks, which will help mold the leather — again, very gradually, which is ideal.

Finally, by first wearing your boots with the padding of thick socks, you reduce the number of blisters and hot spots you’ll get. If you do still get some, give the areas of irritation extra protection with a band-aid.

4. Use a shoe/boot stretcher. If after 80-100 hours of wear your boots aren’t comfortable for an 8-hour day, you may need to take one final step, moving beyond breaking in your boots with your own fleshy feet, to re-shaping things a bit with external stretchers.

A couple years ago, I bought my wife some Red Wing boots for Christmas. They were definitely the right size, and mostly comfortable, but after about a half day of wear, they’d start to feel a little tight and a little blistery just at the widest part of her feet. A small thing, really, but something that would perhaps keep her from wearing them as much as she wanted.

I looked into taking them to the Red Wing store to see what they could do, but I dug into some boot forums (yes, they exist!) and found that shoe stretchers — the kind you can just buy on Amazon — have generally rave reviews when it comes to small adjustments that are needed with your leather boots.

Shoe stretchers look basically like shoe trees, but instead of being solid, they have a mechanism that expands the tree while inside the shoe so that it gently and gradually stretches the material.

I bought a pair of stretchers for those Red Wings, and after just a few days they were perfectly adjusted (and have stayed that way). My wife went from being a little sore in them after a half day or so, to comfortably walking all around San Francisco on a vacation over the course of 3 very full days. I was pretty amazed actually.

There isn’t much to using them: simply insert into the shoe, twist the knob that widens the toe sections — just enough to feel some resistance and hear the leather creaking just a bit, and let it go to work. You don’t want to stretch them out too much all at once. Again, set it so there’s some resistance, and then give it a little more over successive nights until it’s just right. As an extra precaution, moisturize the boot while doing this with either conditioner or oil. It will both soften the leather for stretching and proactively protect against any cracking.

Some things in life just aren’t hackable. Breaking in your leather boots is one of those things. Once you’ve done it though, they’ll be set for everyday use and decades of wear.

Iceland: finally we see the light!

The worst bit about flying to Iceland, or I should probably add flying to Iceland when you are too cheap to pay for a decent airline, is that you have to dress like you are going on a solo trek to the South Pole in order to reduce the weight in your suitcase. Luckily it was quite cold the day we left but we were still glowing, red-faced, as we headed to the airport wearing snow boots, scarves, big coats, all our heaviest stuff in our hand luggage etc.

The flight there was pretty uneventful and it was a beautifully clear day, which meant for good views over the sleeping tourist by the window. When we arrived we just had to pick up our car and go.

Now by this stage in the “life of constant holidays” game, we are pretty much Hertz deluxe members which means what normally happens is we book a smart car and turn up to be upgraded to a minibus. Often we have to scale back the excesses of the upgrade because we don’t want the hassle of trying to park a giant car/fuelling up a giant car. So we were pretty confident that whilst we’d booked a tiny and shit car, that wouldn’t be what we were given. Well that smugness came to an abrupt end when we collected our tiny and shit car. Turns out that Iceland isn’t one of those free upgrade locations...and car rental is expensive here so they had no desire to give us a freebie. So we puttered into town in our tiny and shit car, a journey made far more stressful than it needed to be by the fact that Marcel’s phone is an early adopter of Brexit and the GPS locator dot on google maps only seems to work in the UK. After a lot of swearing we did make it to our surprisingly chilly airbnb. It was in a converted garage and the host had made the interesting decision not to install an extractor fan but instead keep the windows open 24/7 (in Iceland electricity is pretty much free so no one cares about their heating bills). We closed the windows because the humidity definitely wasn’t our problem. 

We decided in the evening we’d go to the Pizza Restaurant we liked, so we headed into town, struggled to park (there’s a lot of snow, which means getting a tiny shit car into a space is quite hard) and skittered down the pavement in the -10c weather to the restaurant. Only to find it had stopped being a pizza joint last week and was now trialling its new menu. I wasn’t hugely keen as they didn’t have much of a vegetarian selection but Marcel didn’t want to re-park or go out walking in the cold so decided to stick with it.

I asked for a pearl barley dish, without the lamb that was supposed to be on top of it. Marcel selected their rutabaga dish. I advised him not to select this as vegetarian is always interpreted in expensive restaurants as “on a diet”. He said I was being silly and it would be a decent portion. He ended up with a palm-sized dish of pureed rutabaga with some crispy slices of it on top. Didn’t want to say “I told you so” but felt I had to, because that’s what life is like in a long-term relationship. 

The next day we headed out of town after a delicious breakfast somewhere that looked like a construction site, but was actually a decent cafe. We had quite a long way to drive so we decided we’d drive straight out to Vik and lunch there. As we headed out of town, the roads got pretty icy and once the wind picked up there were drifts of snow on the road. Always reassuring to see some people digging out a 4 x 4 that’s skidded off the road when you are in a tiny 2WD city car with about 4 inches of clearance.

We had lunch in Vik, which has got much busier since the last time we were there (it has 2 places you can lunch now rather than one) and went for a quick but windy walk on the beach, before setting off again.

We wanted to visit Jökulsárlón the next day in the morning and since there’s not much in the way of accommodation in those parts we had booked into a place called the Fosshotel Glacier Lagoon. It was surprisingly busy and we had to park right the other side of the car park. In my business putting on my gloves, I completely failed to notice Marcel getting out the car and immediately falling over on the ice, but thankfully he was uninjured and thus was able to complete his usual suitcase duties.

Our room had a pretty nice window seat overlooking the view down to the sea so we snuggled up on there and read books before dinner. The only option was the hotel restaurant and I decided I didn’t want to know how much I was going to pay for dinner so refused to do the conversions. It was an...interesting meal. My starter involved so much horse radish I spent the rest of dinner constantly wanting to sneeze. We’d decided we wanted to go hang out in the sauna after dinner so were slightly impatiently waiting for the bill, which they were tardy bringing. The delay was soon compensated for though by the announcement from the staff just after we’d paid our bill that the Northern lights were visible outside. We immediately stampeded onto the balcony to see a very impressive green streak of light across the sky.

We were torn between “this could disappear any second” and “I’m really cold and I want to go get my coat” so in the end we made a mad dash for our room, layers and my camera. Maddeningly, I almost always bring my tripod with me on holiday, but this time pressed for space and weight and with so many unsuccessful trips behind us I’d not bothered. I’m not sure I’d have photographed things much better with it though, because I hadn’t really appreciated that there’s nothing really to focus on through your view finder when what you are trying to photograph is green shimmering light on a black background. I tried though.

It did look amazing. We walked out to the front of the hotel (which incidentally involved us and a bunch of other guests stampeding past the sauna full of confused nude people to get out the quickest exit) and stood in the snow, watching the green waves slowly undulate and shiver across the sky. I hadn’t really got a grasp on the speed of how they move before. Sometimes they seemed like they barely moved at all, and indeed for at least an hour there was one solid green band across the sky that didn’t really change. In other areas you had to look at the edges to notice any movement at all. But occasionally something rapid would furl and unfurl and move across the whole sky in 10-20 seconds.

The other thing that I hadn’t anticipated is that I guess the light in the atmosphere warps our perception of the light from the stars so they looked very unfamiliar. Much bluer than normal and Sirius was swapping between flashing blue and orange so rapidly we thought it was a plane for a while.

Eventually we got cold so went back inside and sat on our window seat and watched it until about midnight. After that it had got pretty dim and we decided we’d better shut the blinds or neither of us would really get any sleep.

The next morning we rose with the dawn and headed over to Jökulsárlón. We did not want to pay 28 euros a head for breakfast in our hotel and we’d vaguely remembered there was a cafe there, so we decided to eat there. I don’t remember the food options being so basic last time. It has also got considerably busier so the indoor toilet is no longer open to visitors and we had to go out to the (thankfully perfectly clean) portaloos in the car park which were absolutely freezing. Climbing up a small hillock to look over the lagoon exposed us to such lacerating winds that my phone promptly went from 98% battery to 9% from the horrors of the cold. I had to tuck it inside all my layers to keep it alive. It was beautiful though.

There are two things to see at Jökulsárlón- the lagoon where ice bergs calve and you can see cute seals pop in and out between them and the so-called Diamond Beach where the ice bergs meet the sea and often get washed up on the shore. Last time we’d driven between the two sites but with the thick snow on the ground we didn’t dare take our car to the beach and instead plodded through the deep snow and strong winds over there.

It was beautiful, especially since unlike last time the sun was out and was glittering through the ice. However the wind was so cold it burnt my face, which ended up really painful and weirdly bright red on one side by the time we returned to the car.

We had gone to Jökulsárlón quite early because we had another 5 hours drive ahead to our Airbnb in Seyðisfjörður. The only reason we’d come back to Iceland was we’d loved our airbnb in Seyðisfjörður so much the last time we’d been there that we resolved we’d return one winter and just hang out there. And this was our plan.

The views as we drove east were spectacular. 

The road conditions driving out east were….pretty appalling. After Jökulsárlón, there aren’t many tourists which means there really isn’t much traffic. I think we saw more reindeers than cars as we fishtailed on ice and wondered why in the hell they only had crash barriers off the side of some of the roads that hooked around cliffs over the sea. At one point we drove past an abandoned van on it’s side with “accident” tape around it. By the time it was getting dark there was such a high wind driving over one of the passes you couldn’t see more than the 5m road marking pole in front of you. Which is when you really rue your car rental choices of a Kia Rio.

The winds had at least calmed down a bit by the time we arrived in Seyðisfjörður. All we had to do was get up our drive to our airbnb overlooking the valley. I said to Marcel I hoped the car would make it. He said he wouldn’t mind if we got stuck in the snow now because we could walk to our airbnb. He had to say that...seconds later our car gently skidded off the road and into the huge snow bank on the side of the drive.

Our hosts had apparently been supposed to email saying meet them in the town because the drive way had been blocked by a lot of snow, but they hadn’t. However they did use their monster truck to spend the next 45 minutes extracting us from the snowbank, so swings and roundabouts. In the end we ended up leaving our car at their house in town and getting a lift up to our cabin with our stuff. Thankfully we’d already done a shop and planned to self-cater so we could recuperate from the long and slightly terrifying drive with a soak in the hot tub and dinner.

Our hosts had been very emphatic that we could ask them for lifts in and out of town whenever we wanted, but a combination of Britishness and embarrassment about disturbing their dinner to get them to dig our car out meant that we decided to walk into town instead. It was a pretty gentle and pleasant 2.5km downhill and we felt very smug especially when we saw some locals “walking” their dog by driving slowly as the dog chased the car (later saw the tracks of someone who’d been driving their snowmobile to exercise their dog). 

The supermarket in town was...weirdly British. There were McVities digestives (Marcel discovered the chocolate and caramel ones on this holiday so I ended up having two packets wedged in my pocket for the journey home). Suede was playing over the tannoy. And a woman, who turned out to be the owner with a very strong midlands accent on the till. Apparently she met her Icelandic husband in Nottingham.

We pottered back up the hill (slightly less pleasant walk against gravity and into the wind when it is -12c outside) and spent the rest of the day living the dream eating biscuits, reading books and popping in and out of the hot tub. Just as good as I remembered it.

The next day we got slightly more adventurous and decided to go on a little snowshoeing adventure. It was -14c out and REALLY windy so I decided I didn’t want to venture far. Marcel wanted to go on the ridge behind our cottage but I said it looked avalanchy so we continued along our level of the valley a bit further. I love snowshoeing but our tracks were getting covered in seconds with the waves of snow blowing across the ground and it was incredibly cold so we only stayed out for about half an hour. When we got back Marcel said he was going to ask our hosts if it were safe to go up higher into the mountains but his conclusion was that it couldn’t be an avalanche risk area or they wouldn’t have built the town there. A quick google later and we discovered that the town is the site of Iceland’s worst ever avalanche tragedy with 24 people killed at the end of the 19th century and a factory flattened at the end of the 20th century. After that we decided to stick to the hot tub in safer activities.

The next day, despite stocking up on enough chocolate digestives to last several lifetimes, we had to go back into town to start our car because we’d forgotten that car batteries don’t really like it brutally cold. So down to town we pottered. Problem was, Marcel forgot that key fob batteries also don’t like it cold and he’d left the fob in an outer pocket. So when we got to the car we couldn’t remotely open it. We had to manually open it with the key in the lock, which triggered the alarm to go off. I think our hosts, whose house we’d parked outside, were fairly sure we were actually handicapped when it came to motor vehicles. We drove the car around a little bit and then tried to park it again, only to find ourselves menaced by a goose. I know this sounds like a joke but it was hanging out in our parking space, wouldn’t move and then tried to get inside our car. We had to lure it away with crisps (not sure if salt and vinegar crisps are good for geese. If anyone found a dead goose later that day, sorry[ish]). 

We pottered back up the hill and settled down to the rest of the day; an exhausting cycle of hot tub and reading in our beautiful cottage.

By the night time it had started to lightly snow. We decided we’d have a really long final hot tub soak so lazed in there like hippos. I was trying to catch some snowflakes on my tongue (sod’s law, none seemed to fall in my mouth but they kept repeatedly landing directly on my eyeballs) and suddenly we saw the northern lights again. Which was incredibly luck considering the night was reasonably cloudy. They whirled around for about 5 minutes and then disappeared, which was a very nice last evening at our cottage.

The next day we nervously checked the road conditions and headed off. Going south there was a huge storm forecast and the road was pretty much out of bounds. Luckily we were heading back to Reyjavik via the northern route. Step one of the journey was get over the pass to Egilsstaðir. No problem. The next step of the journey, which was between Egilsstaðir and Mývatn, is the least driven part of the circular road around Iceland, Route 1. We drove for about an hour. All was well. Then we noticed some cars slowing down ahead to find that the snow had drifted across an uphill portion of the road, where a little car had skidded and got stuck on the opposite side of the road (not dangerous, because there’s about 10 cars an hour on this road). This was unsettling to us in our tiny Kia as we clearly couldn’t turn around as the Southern roads were out, there is no other road ploughed at this time of year to get around this, and our car was clearly no better suited to it than the skidded car that a jeep was now trying to rescue. Marcel got out of the car and walked the hill to better look at it. We had zero phone reception (annoyingly we did at most places along the route but we had none there) to call the roads number to see when the next snowplough was due. So in the end we decided to risk it. We skidded and skittered but we eventually made it through!  Which was both good and bad as now we were aware that if we hit any further bad road conditions we’d be really screwed as we’d be unlikely to be able to go back the way we came as the snow was continuing to drift. We did however make it to Mývatn okay, which was good because after that the road is a bit more used so a bit more ploughed.

We had lunch in the cow restaurant we’d been to before and ate rye bread cooked in a lava vent and looked out the window at the 3ft of snow piled outside and debated thermal baths over further snowshoeing. 

There was however a road that wasn’t ploughed in winter but led up to a caldera, which we thought might be nice to snowshoe on as would have a level terrain under the snow and a decent end point. So we drove down there….only to find that some extremely optimistic/dim tourist had decided to drive their 2wd small car on what was clearly an unploughed road with several feet of snow on it and got stuck, and now the entrance to the unploughed road was filled with vehicles trying to rescue them. With our plans to snowshoe thwarted, we decided to head to the Mývatn baths.

The downside of this is that they turned out to be in a selectively extremely windy spot. We got out the car to find a wind speed best described as “scouring”. We are made of stern stuff though so headed bravely onwards. The pools are obviously hot, but the wind was so strong it was generating waves in the pool (fine) and then breaking those waves into spray in the air. Which meant the only tolerable thing to do was float on your back with only your nose and mouth above water. Unfortunately I suffer from a terrible affliction known as “extremely buoyant legs” so struggled over the next hour to stop them surfacing and exposing my feet and knees to a little light hypothermia. I ended up tucking them under Marcel’s legs which are incredibly unbuoyant (how lucky that of all the people in the world I found my leg buoyancy opposite).

We eventually got out and drove onto Akureyri. Our accomodation was right in the middle of town on a steep hill. So steep and so badly gritted (which I feel is a strange thing for a road in a pretty big [for Iceland] town in a very snowy part of the world to be) that our car got stuck trying to get up it. Eventually we got enough traction to make it into the car park of our hotel, but we decided to limit dinner choices to “restaurants within walking distance”. Luckily there was a burger joint in our street that we could totter carefully to.

Our final day was 6 hours of driving to get to the airport in time for our flight. Which was pretty stressful. Not going to lie. There seemed to be an uncanny (given how empty the roads were) link between where the snow was thickest and most slippery and the sudden emergence of a large lorry barrelling along in the other direction (the ring road is a single lane in each direction for about 99% of the road). But we made it! With just enough time to collapse with nervous exhaustion and eat some sandwiches before our flight home. Despite the terrors of driving and the discovery that renting a tiny car in winter is only a good idea 75% of the time, it was an amazing relaxing week and also FINALLY we got some decent northern lights!

Solid wood is clearly the winner here, right? This is what most people think when it comes to choosing between MDF and Solid Wood

The perception is that wood is seen as this strong and sturdy material while MDF Board is often viewed as a weak and cheap alternative. We’re going to dive deep into the pros and cons particularly for kitchen renovations, and we’ll also share our take on it. Despite popular belief, wood is not always the superior choice; in some situations MDF Board might be the better material.

While buying kitchen cabinets (or any cabinet for that matter) or renovating the kitchen, homeowners often find it perplexing to choose between MDF vs Wood – but we’re here to break it down.

MDF vs Solid Wood

In simple terms, solid wood is essentially the natural lumber while the MDF is categorized as “engineered wood”. Engineered wood is a mixture of redwood, fibers, veneers, resin, and adhesives.

It’s common in older homes that solid wood is primarily used for the construction of cabinets while MDF is used for specific components such as the door center panels. Despite having all these advantages over MDF, solid wood is not always the best option, In order words, MDF is often the better choice than solid wood. Here are a few things about solid wood that make it a bad choice.

Moisture Damage

Most solid woods are prone to water and moisture damage, especially in an unfinished state and it is not waterproof, also some high-quality wood and endue moisture for longer. To protect the wood, a waterproof finishing usually has to be applied.

Warping and Cracking

Solid wood will expand and contract with the change in temperature and humidity (particularly with New Zealand’s ever changing climate) which makes them a poor choice for cabinet door panels. Most solid woods are highly prone to warping and cracking in hostile temperature. The cracks remain visible even if the cabinets are painted. With time, wood makers have developed crafting methods and technologies that minimize warping and cracking.

Bug Infestation

Unless you look after it very well, solid woods are highly prone to bug infestation and pest attack. On the other hand, it requires regular maintenance and the right finishing to keep the wood well protected.

Why renovators choose MDF for kitchen cabinets

MDF is short for Medium-Density Fiberboard and it is a type of engineered wood, consisting of thin panels constructed from wood fiber, wax, and resin.

For our kitchen renovations, It is definitely the most popular (by far) alternative to solid wood with its own share of pros and cons (also more cost effective). It is normally considered a better option to plywood for being denser, stronger and more durable. For these reasons, it has almost as many applications as solid wood.

Many of our clients initially tend to look down on MDF Wood with the perception that it is a “cheaper looking” option to solid wood but as we mentioned in the beginning both solid wood and MDF Wood have their advantages and disadvantages.

Before we talk about the pros and cons of MDF Wood, just so you understand, there are varying types of this engineered wood. MDF boards can also vary in terms of size, density glue type, and moisture content. As a thumb rule, thicker and denser MDF boards tend to be costlier.

For those renovating their kitchen, looking for a cheaper alternative to solid wood (once they know the price difference in material) always comes up, but without compromising on sturdiness and resistance, It always leads them to MDF as a compelling option. Let’s take a look at the benefits of choosing MDF over other types of engineered woods.

MDF Cabinet Doors: Pros

Warping and Cracking

MDF, like wood, expands and contracts when there are fluctuations in temperature and humidity. But unlike Wood, MDF does not warp. This is because the board, thanks to its structure, moves as a unit. Even with extreme changes in humidity and temperature, you do not have to worry about any damage to the cabinet doors.

Smooth Finish

MDF doesn’t have any noticeable grains that are usually found in solid woods, or small imperfections. As a result, they have a smoother finish after the paint is applied.

Easy to Customize

There are shaker-style cabinet doors, flat paneled doors, inset doors, raised doors and many more. The ease of customization of MDF boards is to thank for this variety. Because of its structure, MDF Board can be cut and drilled in many different ways without any damage.  Available in larger sizes than solid wood. If you have a project that demands a large piece of wood with no joints, MDF is the recommended choice.

High Water Resistance

When it comes to water resistance, MDF outperforms wood. In fact, some MDF boards are specifically crafted for bath cabinets and they are made water-resistant.

Cost-effective Alternative

The obvious clear winner is MDF is a lot more cost effective and worthwhile (value for money) and with proper maintenance, MDF boards can last as long as some of the solid woods.

  MDF Cabinet Doors: Cons

Despite all the pros, MDF cabinet doors aren’t perfect for certain situations. From being susceptible to water to scratches to heat, so MDF cabinets does require extra care – here are some of the cons to pay attention to.

MDF cabinet doors aren’t ideal for high temperatures

MDF Board does not do very well when exposed to extreme heat as the core materials can get damaged. This is why MDF Board is not a good material for outdoor furniture where it is exposed to the sun continually.

Compared to wood or plywood, MDF is considered less strong but not by much – but it is still a consideration. For example, Once the MDF get scratches, it’s usually difficult to repair it.

Since MDF consists of fine particles, it may not be great for holding screws in some circumstances.

If not sealed properly, MDF can fall prey to water absorption – so the manufacturing process of the MDF (or the brand of it) is important.

Surprising Design Solutions

It’s clear that MDF is the more cost-effective & durable option, there are some surprising and inspiring projects out there in recent years that feature the use of MDF due to it’s flexibility in design, color, and feel. If you want to get creative with your kitchen renovation (as opposed to the wood look), MDF will give you the opportunity to play with all kinds of colors. MDF can even take veneers like leather and vinyl, if you’re looking to play around with texture.

What is MDF Board commonly used for?

For most of our renovations, you’ll commonly find MDF being used for kitchen cabinets. Most kitchen cabinets comprise of both solid wood and MDF elements. MDF Board is usually found on the doors and interior panelling for the following reasons:

Easier to clean

Does not warp

Water-resistant

But it is not just the kitchen where you’ll find MDF being used, but we also use it in bathrooms and laundry spaces due to the resistance to moisture/humidity.

Another consideration when you’re deciding materials particularly with MDF is when it is compared to plywood.  This is not necessarily a comparison you would do for kitchen cabinets, but in other construction instances choosing a plywood vs MDF may be a choice you need to consider to bring down costs.

Another area where MDF was used in a renovation is used shelving, whether it’s for a bookshelf, kitchen shelving, lounge tv unit, or open wall shelving – it’s popular choice because of the change of colors/styles you can choose. But be careful if you’re using it to place heavy objects as it will sag so normally it is reinforced with solid wood if that is the case.

Our Verdict: Is MDF good for kitchen cabinets?

Our opinion is MDF performs better than solid wood in many areas as mentioned above – although the are benefits to choosing solid wood, the advantages of MDF outweigh it … The main concern surrounding solid wood for cabinets, doors and panelling is it requires consistent care and maintenance.

But when it comes to cabinet doors, we highly recommend MDF, It provides far more benefits than solid wood. If you are in the process of giving your kitchen an upgrade, consider choosing cabinets with MDF doors.

Choosing MDF for your cabinets means they are going to be sturdy and durable – it also makes it a lot easier for you to make decisions during the design process because of the larger range of options. MDF (especially doors and shelves) offer smoother finisher and tougher resistance to humid temperatures which we think is particularly important for Auckland homes.
