I have said a Lot about the “Raph is a system” theory over the past several months, so this is something of a compilation post. It’s got some new stuff, it’s got some old stuff. (You’re reading Part 1) (Part 2 is here) (Part 3 is here)

Firstly, “system” is the term for someone with Dissociative Identity Disorder, or DID. (The term can also apply to some folks with OSDD.) Someone might develop DID after experiencing long-term trauma at an early age- roughly five or six years old. To paraphrase the DSM-V:

1. We’ve seen three (possibly four) distinct personality states who speak, act, and perceive others differently.

2. The personality states, or “alters”, don’t necessarily share memory, and Donnie insinuated in “The Clothes Don’t Make the Turtle” that Raph has a bad memory in general.

3. Problems arise when alters don’t get along or aren’t on the same page. That none of them seem to be quite aware they’re a system doesn’t help either; it’s hard to work on communication and cooperation when you don’t know they need to be worked on!

4. This whole situation isn’t a normal part of a broadly accepted cultural or religious practice, or just Raph playing make-believe. (Though I wonder if he had “imaginary friends” when he was younger...)

5. It’s also not because Raph’s been smoking the devil’s lettuce or whatever. “Pizza Puffs” was one long weed joke and he was the only one “sober” (not poisoned) throughout! We don’t see this happen to other mutants, so it’s not a bizarre side effect of mutagen either.

(I’ve seen a few people joke that Mikey has “multiple personalities”, but that’s a tad yikesy and also just plain incorrect. His “doctor” personas are something he does deliberately, and youngest siblings are just Like That.)

So yeah, Raph is pretty heavily DID-coded. We’ve seen four alters so far:

“Host” Raph (HR): He’s our everyday Raph. A “host” is an alter who fronts most of the time and takes care of “business as usual” situations. They are often unaware of past traumatic events, such that they can appear “normal”. (Ex: the host of a child who lives with an abusive parent could be unaware of the abuse. Otherwise, they might cry or be uncooperative whenever the parent is near, further invoking their wrath. This unawareness allows them to be a “good child”, and stay under the parent’s radar sometimes.) Some systems have more than one host, but that the others have shown up so rarely in this story suggests HR is the only host (for now?).

Savage Raph (SR): Debuting in “Man vs. Sewer”, he’s a survival-oriented alter. HR probably could have defeated the Sando Brothers on his own under normal circumstances, but being in the middle of a breakdown doesn’t do much for your fighting skills. SR got pulled to the front to deal with them instead.

“Red” Raph (RR): “Red” is just a placeholder since we don’t actually know his name yet (or even if he has one, not all alters do), though I’ve also heard folks call him “Angel”. He’s got a “tough love” approach to problem-solving, which was probably a helpful thing in the past. LDM were no doubt rowdy children! We were (officially) introduced to him in “Pizza Puffs”.

Mind Raph (MR): MR could just be a manifestation of HR's thought process via Cartoon Goofery, but that possibility doesn’t give me anything to work with so I’m ignoring it. He’s pretty similar to HR, maybe a tad more upbeat. We (officially) met him in “Raph’s Ride-Along”.

When “Pizza Puffs” first aired, I was like “ah yes, this is the alter who has the cranky edgelord tendencies we’ve seen in previous iterations of Raph. He probably broods on rooftops in the rain when he’s in a bad mood.” Combining that with the whole “Red Angel” thing gives off some Batman vibes. And, of course, SR is similar to the Hulk. Those two heroes are pretty different, but they do have one major thing in common...

A sudden, violent loss. Given how prevalent rushing water is throughout “Man vs. Sewer”, I’m thinking a flood came through and separated Raph from his family. (You could probably argue that turbulent water symbolizes a turbulent subconscious? 🤷) Again, DID stems from long-term trauma, so Raph must have been gone for... a while. A couple of months, maybe more? It’s hard to say exactly; we have a little wiggle room when applying human developmental psychology to a human/turtle mutant. Since Splinter still needed to care for the other three, he wouldn’t have been able to devote much time to searching for Raph, and the New York City sewers go on for miles and miles. The longer Raph was alone, the more convinced he would have been that the others had drowned and he was the only survivor.

How old would he have been? I know the turtles are “different ages”, but they were all mutated at the same time so I’m pretty sure Splinter was just like “the littlest one is the youngest, the biggest one is the oldest, and the medium-sized ones are the middle children.” They’re all probably fourteenish by “Finale”. Back in “MvS”, Leo said, “You know how savage Raph gets when he’s alone”. He didn’t say anything like, “You know how savage Raph gets when he’s alone ever since such-and-such an incident happened”. This suggests that LDM straight-up don’t know something traumatic happened to Raph; they were too little to retain concrete memories of that time. In their minds, Raph has always been like this. Draxum isn’t known for his patience, so even though he wasn’t able to immerse the hatchlings in mutagen for long, they probably mature a bit faster than humans. And since humans usually can’t remember anything from before four years of age, three sounds about right for the turtles, though they would have been stronger and steadier on their feet than any human toddler. I doubt Raph would have survived otherwise.

I think he’s sort of... “stuck” back in that trauma. Catching food, building a fire, making a weapon, and getting camouflage aren’t the behaviors of someone who’s only been gone for a few minutes.

When SR called for help, I don’t think he was expecting anyone to answer.

But Raph did manage to hang onto something as he was swept away! It wasn’t much, but that little ragdoll gave him comfort while he was scared and alone.

(The rabbit design on Bruce’s pajamas is probably a coincidence, but...)

Raph seems the type to have sympathy for odd-looking toys. His knockoff Mrs. Cuddles plushie was the emotional crutch he needed back then.

And then he was separated from that as well. Lowkey associating Mrs. Cuddles with this traumatic event would explain why HR was so scared of her. That he doesn’t remember the trauma means he has no context for this fear, making it seem silly and baseless to him (and to the rest of his family), which is why he denied being scared at all in the first part of the “Mrs. Cuddles” episode. It would also explain why he collects teddy bears instead these days, they are a “safe” toy. (The moral of the story is to not make fun of triggers that seem silly.)

(I wonder what would happen if Mrs. Cuddles encountered Savage Raph? Perhaps he’d be quite sympathetic towards such a lonely little raggedy thing! Timestuck as he is, he probably wouldn’t question why a stuffed animal can talk... and it wouldn't be hard for her to persuade her “new bestest fwiend” to get rid of some “mean ol’ nasty sewew monstews” for her.)

That whole “sewer monsters” thing suggests Raph ran into... something while he was wandering alone. Y’all have heard those rumors about alligators living in the New York City sewers, right? Encountering Leatherhead could trigger a flashback.

It would be pretty easy to introduce Leatherhead into the narrative. One of the episodes the Rise crew had planned was titled “The Island of Dr. Noe”, and alligators have very impressive teeth. The Mirage comics had a story where Leatherhead and several cryptids were brought to an island to be hunted for sport.

Noe seems to have quite a few cronies/friends/rivals he could entertain this way. Since he’s got that obsession with Raph, Noe captures him as well, knocking him out with those darts so he can’t waste his energy trying to escape too soon. (Let’s just assume everyone’s powers are glitchy because they all hit another wave of puberty, meaning they can’t just curbstomp the lower-level villains lol.)

HR wakes up on the island and, of course, starts to panic because he’s lost and alone. While wandering, he runs into Leatherhead, which would trigger a flashback to getting attacked by that alligator all those years ago. But Leatherhead doesn’t want to fight! He’s just as scared and confused as HR is, and could really use a partner to help him survive this island.

HR and SR come into conflict because Leatherhead is/isn’t/is/isn’t/is/isn’t a threat. HR eventually wins out, reasoning that even if Leatherhead is that alligator, it wouldn’t be fair to judge him for what he did back when he was an animal.

But time and dissociation can make memories unclear. That our first look at Leatherhead was in Draxum’s “bluh bluh I’m gonna mutate all the humans” bit in “Bug Busters” means he’s a human-base mutant. He wasn’t the alligator back then, but the hunter tracking it. Leatherhead isn’t one of Noe’s targets, he is one of Noe’s guests! And he wants no one to interfere with his quarry, so he’ll play nice long enough for him and the snapper to take out the rest of the hunters and the freaks. Then the two of them will have the island all to themselves...

Years and years ago, Jack Marlin was a big game hunter prowling the New York City sewers in search of an alligator. He did manage to find and kill one, only to realize it had also been hunting! He had inadvertently saved the strangest little turtle creature.

Marlin had become too skilled at this point, the hunt held no challenge for him. This turtle sounded very young, and he was quite big and strong already. An adult could be tough and intelligent enough to entertain him. Marlin tried to get Raph to lead him back to “the others”. But Raph had been lost for some time, and as far as he knew, his family was dead. Hearing that put Marlin in quite the sour mood. A little mutant snapper is a better catch than none at all, so Marlin tried to haul Raph off. Raph fought back and bit off Marlin’s hand. He escaped, but lost his rabbit in the scuffle. Marlin retreated as well, taking some time to recover, scheme, and hunt other game. (And to pocket that rabbit. The blood loss had made him woozy, and he wanted to have some kind of proof he hadn’t just hallucinated the snapper.) Perhaps he turned that alligator’s hide into a vest, which provided the genetic material for his mutation when he eventually got bit by an oozesquito. Like his Mirage counterpart, Marlin didn’t take losing a limb as a sign he should retire, and instead got a tricked-out prosthetic. Who knows what he could do with it in such a mystic setting as Rise.

Raph eventually reunited with his family, but those distrustful, high-strung survivalist traits he had picked up weren’t helpful anymore. He once again had to be the good and patient big brother who didn’t bite when someone play-tackled him or shook him awake at three in the morning because they’d had a nightmare. Those two states gradually got partitioned off more and more, and now they know little, if anything, about each other.

So Leatherhead and HR are chasing away some mothmen or whatever, and things are going pretty well... until one of them knocks Leatherhead over and a familiar ragdoll rabbit falls out of his pocket. SR realizes that Leatherhead is Marlin and switches in to fight him off again. They’re evenly matched, or perhaps SR is even in danger of losing, when LDM arrive to provide support. Leatherhead is enough of a tactician to know that he should retreat. Donnie and Mikey pursue him while Leo stays behind, placing the rabbit in his stunned brother’s hands. “Remember when Pops made this for you? You were always really gentle with it, ‘cause he wasn’t good at sewing back then...”

(This thing really needs patching up, he’s got sewing stuff for whenever he needs to fix his bears/Blue isn’t a threat on his own/Wasn’t he just back at the lair?/Blue gave back the rabbit/Why does he feel like he got hit by a train?/Blue doesn’t want to fight?/ ...Leo?) And that’s enough for HR to switch back in. He’s probably missing memory from his whole time on the island, so while Leo does his best to tell him what happened, they don’t have enough puzzle pieces between them to truly figure out what's going on.

They defeat the bad guys, release the cryptids, save the day, etc. (Leatherhead managed to lose Donnie and Mikey in the woods. A battle for another day.) Once they return to the lair, HR gets help from Draxum to modify the memory spell from “E-Turtle Sunshine” so he can try to fill in the gaps. Surely he wouldn’t get rejected by his own subconscious... right?

Cue part three in the saga of Raph Punches Himself In The Face. SR isn’t happy that HR is essentially trying to poke at an improperly-healed wound, and attempts to chase him off. HR assumes that SR is just a psychic white blood cell like the Lou Jitsu constructs in Splinter’s mind, and retaliates.

But, of course, fighting is not the answer here. All that accomplishes is giving the body bruises. Eventually HR realizes “stay away” and “back off” are a little different than “get out”, and that SR is just scared. So HR tries another tactic. Over the following days and weeks, he tunes in to calmer memories and just sort of... talks. About what happened yesterday, about his teddy bear collection, about how he finally managed to get a good picture of that pizza pigeon. It takes a while to establish a connection, and even then, it’s spotty at best. Using the spell too much can cause headaches and nightmares. There are days when SR is nearby, and days when he’s not there at all. But he shows up when he can.

And then there’s awkward, stilted conversation and questions neither of them know how to answer and questions neither of them want to answer and more scrapes and bruises and strained silences and apologies, but they finally, finally reach a compromise. SR still doesn’t let HR near those memories, but he tells HR what happened as best he can. (The audience would see those memories, with SR as a voiceover.) Afterwards, HR still visits the mindscape that’s starting to become more solid. They talk some more, they watch light and shadow flow around them, they listen to half-forgotten lullabies on scratchy old cassette tapes. Eventually, HR doesn’t even need to use the memory spell, meditation is enough.

They’ll never get along all the time. But it’s a start.

(SR is going to be so clingy when it finally clicks for him when he finally lets himself believe that his family is alive.)

I liked Alan Grant’s work with Tim (specifically Batman 457, it’s still one of my favourite Tim stories) but yeah Dixon’s early stories (especially his 1st miniseries) were some of the best Tim writing. Lewis had a few good Tim moments, mostly with his relationships with Dana and Steph, but I felt like Lewis preferred Steph’s character over his, since she had a lot of focus in his run. I can’t remember much of Willingham’s run (also according to him, Tim kept journals of his time as Robin? 1/2

I can’t remember the journals appearing beforehand) I felt like Beechon made Tim more angry than he’d normally be, but he was a relief after the last 2 writers. His stories (evil Cass who?) were decent. Brandon Thomas wrote one issue (167) and it was a bit angsty, but not too overbearing and it had a hopeful ending (Jack wasn’t a good dad tho). Dixon’s second run was disappointing (I think he called Ives Martin?). Fab Nic’s was a mess. Yost was not bad, but his Tim could be OOC at times 2/2+

+ I wish Yost stayed on as Red Robin’s main writer tho. Bringing back Cass, RR 16 (I think(?) where Anarky tries to find out RR’s ID) and the Teen Titans crossover were the only positive things about Nic’s run. Funny how TT!Tim was more broody than solo!Tim and RR!RR is more broody than TT!RR. I knew Tim as RR first, so reading backwards, his earlier stuff were definitely more well written. It’s why I love your blog, since early Tim is the best Tim and your analysis is spot on +

I think Alan Grant’s work is very undervalued, because alongside Marv Wolfman and Chuck Dixon, he’s another writer that brought us a fully fleshed out Tim Drake during his first year of existence. He helped bring us a lot of good Tim moments too, and honestly some of his better ones from his pre-Robin days as well, and after he was Robin too of course.

Dixon in his early work did amazing work and taking all that we learned about Tim and putting his character to the test in so many fun and interesting stories. At least until his decline where he comes off as too self-obsessed and became known as the jerkface we think of today, cause with the internet coming in--he's more bigoted views came out. And makes some hindsight stuff even more obvious.

John Lewis though I don’t honestly like. The most I can say for him is that he had good Tim moments where he understood Tim’s dorky nature, but overall he wrote him to be a pretentious, judgmental, boy genius, that just seemed so off the mark for the meek-ish, insecure, but super clever, and slowly forming confidence Tim that we saw just before. He made Tim kind of a jerk, like all of Tim’s worst moments, but except if Tim was always like that and not just in the moment when he’s having a difficult time or put on the spot. So I really can’t like his run because of that. His stuff with Steph too, was just really forced, and simply continued all the forced stuff Dixon did with her. Lewis besides some good moments has a lot of the worst stuff Dixon did with the romances, plus his own weirdness and lack of understanding.

Late Lewis and Willingham though, is were you really get the sense that editorial (namely Didio as this was when he gained more power in the company. And the storyline where Batman put Tim through a test that gave him paranoia came from) wanted to make Tim tougher, and edgier, because he was too soft before. He had “war journals” even though I don’t believe Tim ever spoke about having any, nor thought in a way that would have him calling them “war journals” suit him. They made him more conventionally cool, and rebellious (this was also happening in Teen Titans at the time). He had a motorcycle over a mildly dorky, tiny sized car (like pretty much only Tim can fit in the Redbird comfortably). He was becoming more Batman-esque, and there was angst about how that was happening. It was just all about changing Tim into something he’s not simply because people with power didn’t like him as he was.

Beechon I think did really good though with Tim, because he wrote Tim after Tim’s months of having people he loved die. So I think being angrier made sense. Although I remember it being more frustration and desperation. But he also wrote him in a way that showed an idealistic spirit in him, and a heart that pushed on that kept it feeling like Tim. It felt like Tim dealing with his loses, much more than Geoff Johns’s over the top melodrama. Evil Cass though--can’t deny that’s Beechon, ain’t gonna, but at least he attempted to make it up by writing a Batgirl mini too mixed reception.

Dixon’s second run really showed just how bad Dixon got. Like you’d think a break might have him get his head back into it. But it was all just about bringing Steph back and shoving her in, because he became borderline obsessed with his OC like that. He just wrote things with no regard to how other things were. Wrote Zoe, who was a very sweet, but awkward, understanding, independent, and unsure kind of girl, exactly how he wrote Ariana, just a romantic plot device to be frustrated at Tim to give Tim boy-angst, instead of like she’s a real person with her own issues like how Zoe actually was. COULDN’T EVEN REMEMBER SEBASTIAN IVE’S NAME. And sometimes wrote Tim more like he was in the mind zone of writing Dick versus actual Tim. It was a trainwreck that at one point I loved cause of rose tinted glasses, but now, it’s entirely obvious how far he had fallen. Everything going sour towards the end of his original run times 10. Awful stuff.

FabNic though. I just really don’t like FabNic’s run. He made Tim a cold, caluclating, somewhat apathetic-ish (not fully, but in ways), angsty, edge lord. He didn’t resemble Tim to me. But sort of represented the final position of Johns’s and Didio’s, and others transformation of Tim into something not recongnizable through contrived deaths and situations, that wouldn’t have happened under writers who could write a competent story.

Yost was okay though, but still pretty mixed for me. I recognized Tim more in him, but there’s still a lot of moments where it just didn’t feel like Tim at all. Like I can’t picture Tim punching Damian in the face, I can’t picture Dick just giving away Robin when he knows more about Tim than anyone, and I can’t picture Damian just acting like a stereotypical bratty kid, he’s a total jerk, but not how he wrote it, he just wrote a random kid, not Damian. But there’s more moments of genuine Tim-ness then there was with FabNic. I’m not an honest fan of Yost’s run, but comparatively, it was superior. And while a lot of his writing for it was awful in spots, his story was at least one that was interesting and worth reading just for premise, but shouldn’t be held highly on characterization.

That’s my feelings on it anyways. I’m really glad to hear you enjoy my blog, and I appreciate your compassion about it too. I needed another smile today. it genuinely means a ton to me.

Saturday night's alright for fighting (but Sundays are meant for rest) - Who's Vixen?

Part 8

The trolls have it, no cuddling here. No Jasons were harmed in the making of this chapter, though I would love to see what you guys think she was doing with the cloth. Tim might have thoughts on how he finds them.

If anyone asked Marinette what possessed her to think taunting Red Hood was a good idea, she'd immediately shove Plagg in their face and run. Truly, it had to be that damned cat's influence making her into the petty creature she resembled right now.

Sure, three weeks had passed since Jason had interrupted her first true masked interaction with Red Robin, but that only meant she'd had time to plan for this.

She'd evaded the others easily, knowing Robin and Red would be on the lookout for her specifically, but that didn't mesh well with what she wanted to come of tonight. Either one could interrupt later, but for now, she needed Hood alone.

Grateful the flute never manifested on this merged suit, she imagined the illusion she wished to create. Building the magic beneath her claws, Tuemessian scraped once across the concrete, allowing a gray tabby cat to manifest where she pulled back from. Down below, she saw Red Hood turn at the sound, looking up and seeing the cat tracing a path down the pipes onto a fire escape and down into the alley beside him.

Picking her way across the roof, she watched as he disregarded the cat, making way for the fire escape the cat just exited. Upon reaching the top, he looked around the roof, only to find the same cat sitting on the roof ledge, watching him.

Hood only stared a moment before shaking his head and looking ahead, seemingly mapping out a way across the rooftops before taking off.

And so the chase began.

Every roof he stopped on for more than a moment, the same cat would appear, stalking across the edge of his vision. Only now every time he turned to look, the creature disappeared.

After four or five reappearances, Hood turned unexpectedly, catching the cat in his sights, gun pointed at the devilish creature.

Seemingly nonplussed by his threat, the cat leaned forward on its perch and sniffed the barrel of the gun before meowing at him and jumping down the side of the building.

Looking over the edge, he watched it pick its way over to a dumpster and disappear inside it. Heaving a sigh, he took its place sitting upon the roof ledge. He still couldn't shake the feeling of being watched. Dropping his covered head into his hands, he took a few deep breaths through the helmet, contemplating taking it off a moment just to stave off the claustrophobic paranoia. Only for water to rain down on his head.

"What tHE FUCK," Hood yelled, jumping up only to have a cloth wrap around the mask, rubbing back and forth across the surface. Twisting and reaching out simultaneously to throw off his attacker, he was met with air. Rapidly turning in a circle, he found the spot he sat in still wet, cloth on the ground at his feet. So not his imagination. Something was following him.

Oh, game on.

Running over the rooftops again, he focused in on anything behind him, listening for even the slightest breath of air, a single scratch of concrete, anything.

Feeling a shift of air right behind him, he dropped down and swept his foot behind him, bracing for impact, only to find none.

An indistinct giggle sounded to his left and he launched himself towards the sound, only to force into a tuck roll when no impact came. Landing on his feet, he took off once more, still focusing behind himself, only to have his arm yanked on, veering him to the right, only then noticing the billboard he almost ran headlong into. Stopping short once more, he pressed his back against the darkened side of the sign, peering out into the night before him, assessing the situation.

One, someone was following him. Obviously.

Two, they were toying with him. It pissed him off to no end, but nothing had been violent as of yet.

Three, they prevented his dumbass from faceplanting into…

Peaking around the edge of the sign, he saw it was an advertisement for Wayne Enterprises newest project. Oh, that just fucking figures.

Three, they prevented him from the embarrassment of bashing his face into his family's billboard. He'd never hear the end of it had someone caught That on camera.

Okay… so the presence was most likely benevolent, if a little playful and sneaky as all hell.

Giving a rattling, bone deep sigh, still watching the empty space before him, he reached up and clicked on his comm for the first time that night, switching to a specific channel.

"Yo, babybird."

It took a moment too long for the other end of the line to click open, but he waited, knowing the lack of desire to respond to the nickname was the only reason for the hesitation.

"What is it, Hood?"

"Your shadow get bored of you?"

"....how do you mean."

"Pretty sure it's following me."

".... Good luck with that."

Jerking forward, he yelled over the com, "What do you mean, good luck?! Come collect it, it obviously likes you more!"

"No it doesn't, you just said it was bored of me."

"It helped you though!"

"... What exactly did it do to you then?"

"...Nothing violent. But it obviously has Something against me."

He was met with radio silence for a solid minute. Hood was beginning to think RR might have turned his end off and left him to his fate, in which case he was going to personally hunt the bird down and make him take the damn stalker back. Suddenly, the line flicked back open.

"I'm in route, hold tight."

And with that, the line went quiet. He considered comming Batman as well if only to fill him in on the situation, only to shake the thought away, 'Fuck that, he'd just over react. Harmless or not, he'd attack for simply walking on his terf.'

In his distraction, Hood forgot the space he created behind his back. That is, until he felt a hand pressing into the tense muscles of his upper back, right into the tender spot by the shoulder blade where a knot had formed. Reacting without thought, he reached over and locked his hand around a tiny wrist.

At first, all he felt was shock. Four months of trying to even prove the existence of this shadow and now he holds it by the wrist. That was when he saw it. The same tabby cat from earlier at the edge of the roof. The second he spotted it, the cat was on the move, claws bared and teeth glinting as it hurled itself towards him.

Pulling his arm around, forcing the wrist to follow, he used the shadow, that now was an indistinct black blur, as a human shield. It seemed to wrap around him and suddenly the cat was gone. Sitting stock still and gripping the wrist a little tighter, he watched for the cat to reappear only to hear a giggle in his ear.

Part of the blur pulled back and revealed catlike eyes that would put Selina's costume to shame, the iris a vibrant glowing blue bleeding into silvery gray scleras. The second he took note of the eyes, the rest of a body became apparent, settled into his lap, legs wrapped around his torso and wrist held in his hand the other coming up and quickly tugging his helmet off, tossing it aside in a swift movement before he could react. Red chose that moment to land on the other end of the rooftop.

"Vixen!"

The creature tilted its head, something in the hood flicking at Red Robin's voice, but eyes not leaving Hood, looking like a predator having trapped its prey after a long hunt. Which meant no sense since he caught her.

"Get off him."

'Vixen' as littlebird called him, arched their back, using the captive wrist and tightened legs as a tether point to go back further until they were looking back at his brother from an upside down vantage.

"Aww, I was just having a little fun. He interrupted mine after all."

"Come here, little shadow."

With that, they pulled free of his grip like it was nothing, twisting off him and disappearing, only to reappear in front of Red, pressed into his space and bushy tail swishing behind them. His brother seemed completely unfazed by the visual confirmation of the nonentity that had been stalking them all this time.

"So you decided to finally trust another?"

Giggling, the figure pulled the hood down from their head, ears popping out from under it, probably what had been twitching earlier.

"Yeah, figured I'd mess with him while I still had anonymity on my side," the voice finally took on a tone, sounding feminine and painfully familiar.

Coming out of his stupor at this display of casual trust between the two, Hood loudly cleared his throat, gaining the attention of both.

"Hey Red, Vixen. Excuse me, but what the fuck is going on here?"

The rather small girl? Woman? Whatever. Turning towards him, the facial features and hair came into view along with that same soft, female voice, seemingly taking notice of him again.

"Hiya Jason."

"... Pixie pop?!"

"Damn, how much of the glamor did you take off?" Red asked.

"Most of it. My face looks like mine smeared in paint with weird eyes to him right now," she stated, making her way back over to him and offering a hand.

"You're the goddamned shadow that's been driving Bats in circles?!"

"Well yeah. But it's okay! Alfred knows."

"Of fucking course Alfred knows, he knows everything… but you know as well. All of us?"

She nodded solemnly.

Letting out a sigh, he ruffled her hair only to stop as his hand hit an ear.

"So what the hell is with this getup anyways?"

"You heard about the whole situation with a ladybug a few years back in Paris?"

"Yeah, with the magic shit that barred us all from the city, I remember. You telling me it's connected to that?"

"Let's just say it's the same source of power. I'll tell you more another time. Point is, the fox bits are real in costume, so gentle please?"

Immediately tugging at an ear tip, dragging an upset whine from her, "I don't know, should I be nice to someone who was perfectly content messing with me all night?"

Smacking his hand away, she pouted, not paying attention as Red immediately put his hand on top of her head in a soothing motion.

"You deserved it."

"Oh yeah, and how is that?"

"Startled me three weeks ago on a rooftop when I was stalking Red. You were waiting for me to make myself a little more solid so you could catch me!"

"Well excuse me, little grudge keeper, but I wouldn't have tried to catch you if you'd just let us know it was you. When did you get so vindictive anyways?" He asked, gaze flickering to the casual contact between the two in front of him before brushing it off as their unusual form of comfort they seemed to have with one another.

"Oh yeah, because Batman is always so welcoming to anyone in his city who seems not completely human. And you're not the most inviting vigilante yourself there. Really, would you have accepted me as a non threat if I did just immediately reveal myself."

"Alright alright, point taken, kid."

Seeming to fidget in place, she looked up at him, tugging the fabric normally covering her mouth up a bit to hide under.

"You're not upset, are you?"

Softening, he pulled her into a bear hug, enveloping her into his chest, "Course not, sweetheart. I'm going to get you back for that stunt you pulled earlier though!" He threatened, ruffling the hair between her ears once more.

"Try and retaliate and I'll tell everyone about you almost running face first-mrph," he cut her off by smothering her face further into his chest.

"Point made! We should get going, yeah?"

Pulling free, she glared up at him, before making way to the edge of the roof, Red following them.

"How long have you known your shadow was Mari, anyways?"

"Hey! Codenames only."

"Right, Vixen."

"Actually it's Tuemessian," she deflects, changing the topic and jumping on Red's back, much to Hood's amusement.

"Oh yeah, like the Greek fox?"

"Exactly!"

"Hmm, destined to never be caught. Pretty fitting, though the original mythos has you created to punish Thebes for its crimes."

"And that isn't what I'm doing?"

Blinking back, he stopped a moment, "oh hell, you really thought it through, didn't you?"

She disappeared from sight, though a trained eye could see the fold in fabric where her weight settled around Red, who was surprisingly quiet throughout the encounter.

"Mmm," she hummed in that weird mix of voices once more.

Taking off across the rooftops once more, he realized one crucial detail he missed, "You knew she was your shadow this whole time!" He called after them, receiving a bark of laughter in return.

My 6x22 opinions that no one asked for which is totally cool

Okay I’ve had time to process kinda so here we go yolo

Some fun/great/meaningful Red/Liz moments:

1) Liz in trouble and Red literally thinking nothing of dropping everything to help, literally of course, cause why wouldn’t he, DESPITE him wanting Liz to just take care of herself. He manages to tamp down his instinct of worrying about Lizzie & only Lizzie and respects her as a knowledgeable & capable agent and listens to her battle plan & helps her without question THAT IS GROWTH AND I’M VERY PROUD.

2) Liz thinking nothing of using Red’s now-familiar resources for her own plan like hell yes, take control of your boyfriend’s criminal network like a bad-ass Liz I love it

3) Red meeting up with Liz in the Post Office with the line: “Fancy meeting you here.” Like WHEN has that ever NOT been used as a flirtatious LINE™?? get outta here with ur lies. He was flirting big time and I loved it.

Next 4) AND OKAY THIS MIGHT BE THE BIGGEST THING CAUSE ARAM MADE THE CODE TO THE BOX “SAMAR” AND RED DELIVERED A FUCKING CASUAL LINE ABOUT MAKING THE CODE A GIRLFRIEND’S NAME AnD The CAmErA haRD CuTS tO LiZ WHEN HE SAYS IT. PLUS LET’S KEEP IN MIND (!!!) THAT WHEN RED WAS TRAPPED IN THE BOX IN ANSLO GARRICK THE CODE WAS “JULIET” AND WHEN LIZ WAS TRAPPED IN THERE IT WAS “ROMEO”. LIKE ARE YOU KIDDING??? SYMBOLISM AND CLUES AND DOUBLE MEANINGS EVERYWHERE AND I FUCKING LOVE IT GOODBYE

5) and then the ever-popular Team Meal scene where Red & Liz stood the absolute closest they could to one another and they flirted and lip-stared and it was pretty great.

OH 6) WHEN RED’S CAR LITERALLY SMASHED INTO THE CAR THEY WERE HOLDING LIZ, RESSLER, & ARAM IN AND THE SHOOTOUT STARTED WITH THE DRAMATIC MUSIC AND RED RISKED EVERYTHING TO SAVE HIS GUYS CAUSE HE’S A GOOD. PERSON. AND WHEN THE CAR WAS GONNA EXPLODE THEY ALL DID THIS MASSIVE DOG PILE TO PROTECT EACH OTHER AND I FELL HARD & UNEXPECTEDLY FOR THE TEAM & FAMILY DYNAMIC AND I’M GONNA PRETEND THAT LIZ JUST HUNKERED DOWN NEXT TO RED AND HE THREW AN ARM AROUND HER I LOVE MY HAPPY PRETEND BUBBLE.

OH OH OH AND 7) AS MUCH AS I WANTED LIZ TO BE THE ONE TO SAVE RED FROM MCMAHON, DEMBE DID INSTEAD AND I’M FINE. WITH. IT. BC THOSE TWO ARE THE CUTEST AND I’M SO SO SO GLAD HE’S BACK AND THEIR SCENE LATER WAS ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING WOW OKAY.

Anyway, regarding the last few scenes, this is what I’ve decided to feel:

Red definitely would have stayed for dinner with his wife and daughter fucking fight me had the Katarina thing not been bothering him and Liz would have been thrilled & Agnes would have been #triggered by Red’s laugh at something Lizzie said and Agnes would have thrown her arms around him for a big hug bc OF COURSE she remembers her Reddy who she saw every day for 10 months while her mommy was in a coma JUST LET ME HAVE THIS

Oh, and that mystery dude is just confusing and I’m too tired but I think the picture he showed Red and Red’s resulting exhausted, Bob’s Burger-esque oh my god made it pretty clear that Red did not think Katarina was alive so he did not lie to Liz and he was not exactly thrilled that Kat is alive after all. I have opinions about the “twist” but I’ll leave those off and spare you all.

I also think that Red was pretty guarded and chilly when confronting Katarina, no desperate-love-struck-omg-you’re-alive revelation thank god and I think (and hope) that there is actually some bad blood between them (@codewordpumpkin play that track) that will make things worse between them going forward. In a good way. If that makes sense.

I was also very bolstered by the fact that Red did not seem to kiss her back, at least definitely not the first time, and, you know, then she fucking drugged him and had him kidnapped sooooo… hopefully no love lost there. Literally.

ALSO regarding the Katarina CRAP, she called him Raymond but (and TPTB confirmed this) that’s bc, for all intents and purposes, that’s his name now. (I refrain from using the word ‘identity’ bc that implies he adopted the real RR’s values and relationships. And, as we know, he sure as shit didn’t. #redloveslizinaveryveryromanticway)

LASTLY I’ve been thinking about the endless JB & JE articles that made me so angry and I’ve come to a conclusion:

If they can take every Shocking Unexpected Twist™ they half-retcon, half-make up at the beginning of the season & say that they had it in mind all along WHETHER THEY REALLY DID OR NOT and claim power & authority over those choices & shoe-horn them into the narrative to make it #organic??? What’s to say that this time next year, that Twist won’t be Lizzington? I know I’m reaching and it really may not happen, I know that, but HEY JUST HYPOTHETICALLY if they can bring Katarina fucking Rostova back from the dead when they clearly had no inkling of that in, say, Cape May when she was canonically v e r y d e a d, then what’s to say they won’t finally make it to Lizzington and tell everyone in every interview they ever give that it was the planned endgame all along? And, who knows, maybe then it will actually be the truth ❤️

My main point? Is there one, no one knows We can’t control what they write, we can only go along for the ride & try to get some enjoyment out of the resulting theorizing w/ friends & vid making & fanfic writing. And honestly? I get a hell of a lot of enjoyment out of watching our wonderful fandom members catch little clues & theory-build towards Agnesgate & Lizzington, using all those little gems like the box codes & their creativity to expand on the limited story we are provided. And, while I might be and who tf am I kidding lbr I definitely am biased for Lizzington, TPTB have yet to convince me that all those things little things that our fandom adds up to Agnesgate & Lizzington AREN’T completely intentional & planned for a GREAT, MEANINGFUL, EMOTIONAL, HARD-HITTING, MORALISTIC, & ACTUALLY TRULY SHOCKING endgame reveal. So yeah. This finale certainly wasn’t the worst we’ve had in terms of Lizzington (thank u for that perspective @ihaveyoulizzington) and honestly there’s tons of material for fanfic over this blessedly short hiatus. Moral: there’s no reason we can’t enjoy ourselves together as a fandom with the material we are given, despite other people’s opinions and views BC: entertainment is subjective and we can take what we want from it. That’s the beauty of fandom. So yeah. I certainly plan to write plenty of fun fics over the hiatus for anyone who wants to read them and I hope we continue to have fun together. Love you guys 😊❤️

MT: Hello, hello, everyone! It's, uh, it's been a while, hasn't it?

Eli: Yeah, when was the last question you answered?

MT: Let's see, it was back in...ooooh, that's was long ago.

Talon: It's been over half a year.

RR: Well, it wouldn't have been if somebody wasn't trying to show off by throwing knives blindfolded!

T: I wouldn't have hit the computer if somebody hadn't dared me and also knew their left from their right.

MT: Now, now girls. No fighting. Besides, we got our special computer back! Let's celebrate by answering a group question! Also, a very big thank you to my biggest fan, Alice and her technical know-how, for making the repairs!

RR: Also, Also, a very late Happy Halloween, Thanksgiving, Merry Christmas and New Year!

MT: Here's a question for all of us:

MT: Uhhh...sort of?

T: "Sort of"?

MT: Well, it's not like I can do push-ups and sit-ups.

*Hefts up her massive belly*

MT: ...Not with all this in front of me, at least.

E: You jump around everywhere. That's good exercise!

MT: Yeah, but that's just for me to get around town. I hardly have to put a lot of effort in my jumps unless I'm trying to go really high but that's rare. Plus, there's no weight set that's heavy enough for me to lift weights with.

T: Hmm...Maybe you can find one of those huge hydraulic presses.

RR: Oh, like in the cartoons?

T: Yeah. I've heard of some go up to and over 50,000 tons.

MT: Ooh! That sounds fun! It's not often I get a chance to go all out with my strength.

E: Maybe you can ask the people that knock down old buildings if they can let you do the knocking down by yourself.

RR: Oh, that sounds like perfect exercise for you, Penny! Also, it'd be a nice little side gig: a one-woman demolition crew!

MT: Hmm...that might be doable. Now what about you, Cassie?

RR: Oh, I go jogging every day.

E: Isn't that like walking really slow for you?

RR: Eh, a bit. If nothing else, it helps keep me nice and limber for when I really have to run. Oh, and dancing!

T: How often do you dance?

RR: I'd say several hours a day, at least. Not just rehearsal with my squad but I also have other classes about techniques and different styles.

E: Do you just learn the same dance over and over?

RR: Oh no! We have to learn a whole new routine for every recital and competition and it can take a few weeks, if not months, to perfect it.

MT: And you, Talon?

RR: *Pokes Talon's bicep* What does our resident ninja girl do to get so swole?

T: If you must know, I try to switch up my exercises every day.

E: Do you go to a gym?

T: Pssh! No. I don't want to work out with all those meatheads and gym bunnies. I have my own weight set at my apartment.

MT: Don't your neighbors complain about your weights hitting the floor?

T: I usually go for more reps than go really heavy. I also do a lot of pull-ups, sit-ups, and push-ups.

RR: What's the highest you've gone?

T: I don't know, I don't count anymore.

MT: Really?

T: Counting distracts me. I usually just set a kitchen timer for about 15 to 20 minutes and just go non-stop until the bell rings.

E: *Whistles*

T: I also do a lot of balance exercises like planking or handstands.

RR: Oh, I hate planking! It's fine at first but damn if your body isn't screaming after a while. I remember me and the girls tried to see who can go the longest.

E: Who won?

RR: Amanda but that's because she's a big ol' farm girl with arms like Talon's. Our wimpy little arms didn't stand a chance!

MT: You turn, luv. What do you to exercise?

E: Me and the other wrestlers go to the gym. We lift weights and do push-ups and sit-ups like Talon but after that, we go to the practice ring and do drills.

MT: What do you do?

E: Mainly just getting our bodies used to hitting the mat and going over techniques so nobody gets hurt during a show.

T: Hm.

E: What?

T: So you admit it is fake?

E: I didn't say that! Even if it was, and that's a big IF, we still have to do all those jumps and slams! All that practice is to make sure nobody ends up with a broken neck or worse!

MT: I thought you broke your nose during that match you had a few weeks ago!

E: Heh! Yeah, I was bleedin' pretty good, wasn't I?

RR: Aren't you're stronger than the average human, Eli?

E: A bit, I think? Maybe strong enough to rip a car door off the hinges but I'm not strong enough to lift a car over my head.

RR: Umm...that's still pretty freaking strong, dude! If I do work out with weights, I usually just lift the little 10 or 15 lb weights!

E: Is it? It doesn't seem that big of a deal when I've seen Penny on TV suplexing a tank like it's nothing.

MT: Come now, Eli. Whatever muscles I have buried beneath all my fat are powered by goddess magic. You and Talon actually work for your strength!

E: That's true, I suppose. But I do like having a girlfriend who's bigger and stronger than me.

MT: *Blushing* Aw gee, luv!

RR: What say we close out this post with a good old workout song?

MT: Ooh, I like the sound of that!

T: Anything Metal?

RR: No, sorry Tal!

I’m curious, did Vaughn fall for Nick or Hancock first? or was he immediately taken with both of them? They have such a cute dynamic I love it

havent expected this kind of ask, im tryin to answer in best way, thank you @dovahqun !

per short, Vaughn didnt actually realised he fallen for them, but it was so obvious for others in Sanctuary, especially that they also started to live together in his house?

per long: (under read more, its an essay, forgive me)

first impressions werent the best with Nick, given that Vaughn was still angry and thirsty for revenge, but Nick still believed he is actually a good person, he just needs some guidance. after Nick saved his life in Glowing Sea, Vaughn realised that he must do a change, which what Nick all needed to hear, so he finally took his General role.

Nick stayed with Vaughn for like 3 weeks, watching him how he tries to earn the people’s trust and changed in a better person, but then he went back to his detective work, and not seeing Vaughn for weeks (which in that time Vaughn and Debbie joined the BOS and Danse joined them in Sanctuary)

but a few weeks later, Vaughn got hurt badly during a solo mission (was knocked out and tied and had his mouth cut by a raider) and felt so shocked by that, plus all the thoughts and feelings he had just crashed into his head, and had a bad relapse, being so depressed he basically needed help to do simple things. Debbie used Preston’s radio to contact Nick and get to Sanctuary, thinking that he was the one to deal with Vaughn in a bad time, maybe he could do it again.

Nick had a lot of patience with Vaughn, feeling so sorry how he felt, and even during a night when Vaughn had a nightmare, Nick relunctantly accepted his asking for sleeping with him. since then, they sleep together, as Vaughn really can get a better sleep for the first time since he is out of Vault, and Nick think it feels nice. do i need to mention that Vaughn got high once cause of painkillers and kissed Nick and none talked about it but thought about it a lot.

since then, Nick started to get more often in Sanctuary, their relationship got stronger in that time. they both have a lot of common and just enjoy each other’s company.

with Hancock, neither the first impression was so fine, and they didnt seen each other for a long time, only Hancock knew about the vault dweller from others. second time when they met, it was when Vaughn and the Minutemen took the Castle, and he offered to go in Goodneighbor to buy parts for the radio, so he took Dogmeat and went there, then heard that Bobbi No Nose can offer what he needs, so he agreed to help her out. Now, i changed the canon here too, as i know Vaughn wont accept to break into DC’s strongroom, as he knew that 1. Nick and Piper would hate to hear that and 2. how its like to hear that the General of Minutemen broke into the strongroom of DC? so i think Bobbi says she knew about a pre war bunker that has untouched supplies, so the event goes, then Vaughn basically gets scared seeing Fahrenheit, and even more hearing that its Hancock’s warehouse. he immediatly turned against Bobbi and told her to go. after that, Fahrenheit dragged Vaughn to Goodneighbor to go talk and explain to Hancock about this. Hancock wasnt even mad about this, he appreciated the sincerity, and made fun on how him and the dog stains his carpets with the mud and blood into his clothes and the dog’s fur. after talking, Hancock explains that he should not feel comfortable in his position and should go out, and Vaughn offered him the chance to help him in his Minutemen job.

they also bonded fast, having same bad humor, same sense of justice and Vaughn really loves Hancock’s spirit of adventure. he also gave Hancock a newly renovated home in Sanctuary, which later he shared with MacCready.

a while later, weeks?? one night, Hancock gets out the house cause he cant sleep, and sees Vaughn on the steps of his own house, and goes to talk with him. after a while, Vaughn stated that he cant sleep well cause Nick isnt with him, and Hancock said more in joke that he could be his cuddle buddy, but didnt expected to get a positive answer so....they just slept together. both had a better rest. when Nick was in Sanctuary, Vaughn just thought that they could just try to sleep together, which the other two thought its a bit crowded but didnt refused. a while later, Vaughn started to have sexual relationship with Hancock, and with Nick he occasionally make out.

over the months, between Minutemen work, and dealing with other duties for BOS and RR, and even Institute, Vaughn became overstressed about everything, and Nick and Hancock helped him out, by supporting him, taking decisions in his name for Minutemen or just being there for him. after the battle of Bunker Hill, when he helped the Institute (and didnt said anything to anyone, not even them two), he was banished from RR as an agent recognized him and Desdemona thought of him as a traitor, despite that Deacon and Debbie tried to explain his reasons. being so stressed, he even snapped at a scientist and nearly strangled them, earning him banishment from Institute and Shaun’s threat that he will kill him if he ever gets in the Institute’s way, and other hurtful things he said.

Vaughn fell in depression as he thought he failed everyone, even that Nick and Hancock tried to explain isnt his fault, he tried his best, but still not much result.

2 weeks later, the Sanctuary was attacked by the Institute, and even if a few ended up with just a few scratches, Vaughn was furious about, and he declared he must destroy the Institute, as other settlements are now in danger.

for getting in the Institute, there must be accessed in the sewers, which Nick and Hancock offered, as they said they dont need much air and wont be affected by the rads in the water. Vaughn was hesitating, but he had no other choice but to let them there. while he and some other companions and a few elite Minutemen waited, he couldnt stop thinkin of worst cases, but when they got in Institute, he was so relieved to see them ok and held them in his arms, forgetting for a few seconds for what they were there. they also needed to drag him from Shaun, as Vaughn tried to reason with him, but all he got back was just more insults and reasons how disappointed he was in his father, and wished he never had to release him from the Vault.

after the Institute, Vaughn basically needed days to sleep, as he was so exhausted, and only woke up to eat and go to bathroom, but he needed like 3 days of resting.

but then on 4th morning, he could hear laughter of the kid and the other two, so he got up and seen a image he never thought he will see: Nick and Hancock on the couch, with Oliver onto Nick’s lap, playing a board game with Codsworth, while Dogmeat and Hera watched them.while Vaughn was resting, they two took care of Oliver, already acting like dads to him.

and now, to get to your question (if you got reading this so far ily) and answer it: it felt in that moment that he really loves them so much, and its clear he cant choose between them, as both were so perfect for him. but when he confessed, you might ask?

Oliver asked his dad if he can call the other two ‘dads’, and also asked if he should call them differently, like Hancock is ‘papa’ and Nick ‘pops’ and Vaughn finally realised that he should talk with them about their relationship. he was too busy with everything, and forgot about his own self.

when he asked them if its ok to be lovers and to be together a family, they answered that they are already a family, and its kinda obvious their relationship is closer. also Nick and Hancock agreed that they both love Vaughn, he loves them equally, there is no reason to be jealous, and both can have a good life together as a family.

Ghetsis/Zinzolin, Giovanni/Ghetsis, Lysandre/Ghetsis, a hard to explain one but I like the concept of like Ghetsis/Reader, not in that I’m the ‘reader’ but that the reader is a ‘fan’, grunt, etc, so I guess Ghetsis/ghetsis fandom, and I have a real big ‘guilty’(read: i enjoy it and it’s harmless fiction so i don’t really feel that guilty, but people will definitely be real unhappy to hear it but fuck it it’s not like I’m forcing it on anybody) love for Ghetsis/N or other members of his family. But Ghetsis goes well with like everybody tbh depending on what you’re after. opinion on true love: Ghetsis finds that romantic feelings are, in general, for weaker persons. True love is self-love, and letting yourself love or enjoy as many others as you’d like. Of course, true love directed at him isn’t shameful or pathetic at all, and if he finds himself attached to somebody. . .well, he’ll admit to feeling weak for them, but it’s not something that makes him in any way less perfect.

opinion on love at first sight: You’ll love him at first sight. How weak do you have to be to just see somebody and be romantically infatuated with them? You don’t even know anything about them. Pathetic. You’re going to get yourself into trouble, silly pet!

2018 was an interesting year.

I started the year the way I do almost every year now, at a Games Done Quick event. Always my favorite time of the year, because I get to hang out with my Twitch friends that I only see twice a year. A few weeks after that I got to go to the Royal Rumble in Philly which was awesome. RR was always my favorite of the Big 4 WWE pay-per-views.

In February I started to get a bit more serious about my weight and started doing a set of yoga things for about 12 weeks. I didn’t see much of a result from it which is unfortunate but it was motivation to start going to the gym to see actual results. Unfortunately myself and my friends that were going kinda fell off the grind in the middle of the summer but hopefully that’ll pick back up soon. I played a show on my birthday and two of my closer friends from Twitch drove up to catch the show and spend my birthday with me. We got poutine after the show and then hung out for a bit. Easily one of the best birthdays in recent memory.

In April I started getting my teeth fixed. For anyone who didn’t know before this, I needed a TON of dental work. I got a bunch of broken teeth out and got crowns on my front top teeth. Sometime this year I’m going to be getting implants for the ones that were too broken to fix. My teeth were a huge source of my self esteem issues for years and getting even just the front ones fixed has been incredible for my esteem. I smile with my teeth now, I laugh and don’t worry about covering up my mouth. I can eat foods without worrying about them being too tough and breaking a tooth.

This next part is probably gonna end up being a lot of word vomit so I apologize in advance. Skip down about 3 paragraphs if you don’t want to read it.

In the later part of April I started talking to a girl. I'd known who she was for a while, we used to follow each other on tumblr years ago. We talked for a few days and she asked if I wanted to get coffee with her when she got home from school. I was so unbelievably nervous. I’d never been on a date before that, and I was caught so offguard by the fact that SHE asked ME. We kept talking for a while before she got home and we eventually met up at a Starbucks nearby near the end of May. If you thought I was nervous before, the time I spent leading up to her walking in the door of that starbucks was the most nervous I think I’ve ever been. Once she got there and we started talking though it was great. We had a lot in common and she was easily one of the funniest people I’ve met. We talked for an hour and it was such a fun and nice time. Before we left she told me we should do that again sometime. I was so relieved and shocked that I didn’t scare her off. We went and saw Deadpool the week after which was really nice. Afterwards she drove me home and we talked a lot on the way back. I was very honest about a lot of things and she wasn’t scared away. About a week later she asked me to get dinner at one of her favorite restaurants and it was a lot of fun again. She drove me home again and before getting out of her car I asked if I could kiss her. She said yes and the way she so excitedly pressed her lips into mine is something I still remember so vividly. We saw eachother for another month or so. She would send me good morning texts every day and apologize if she didn’t, which was already way more than I ever expected to get. She was such a source of positive energy and I needed that.

As time went on I kinda let my anxiety get the best of me and I think that really affected how things were going. I knew she was bad at texting and stuff and here I was anxiously texting her too much. Overthinking every little thing like I do, because if I actually manage to find something good, I have to ruin it somehow. The last time we hung out she had to leave early because she got sick from the food we ate. After that things kind of fizzled out. She told me that she was going back to school soon and that things were going too hectic before she went back so she wasn’t sure when she’d have time to see me again. I ended up seeing her once more before she left when we ran into eachother at Red Robin. It was nice to see her, she hugged me before leaving. I feel bad because I sent her multiple big texts after that which I know didn’t help anything but me being the clingy sumbitch I am I thought that some sort of closure would help. And it kind of did.

I’d be lying if I said she wasn’t on my mind from time to time still. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t think about texting her, knowing she was home for winter break. I think the reason I’m having such a hard time getting over her is because she’s the only one who has ever really given me that much of a chance. Every other thing I’ve been in ended so soon after and I felt like I was worth it for the first time in my life. We talked about that a few times after everything kinda went downhill and she would tell me that I am worth it, but it was basically just bad timing. I want to try and stop thinking about her as much. If our paths cross again and the timing is right, I wouldn’t be opposed to trying again, but I’m not going to hold my breath and I can’t let “what ifs” keep me from trying to meet new people. It was honestly such a good learning experience though and I’m so thankful that I met her.

The rest of the summer had a lot of fun things in it as well. I got to go to Minneapolis again for Summer Games Done Quick in late June, then again in August for one of my closest friend’s wedding. I got to see some of my favorite bands, Coheed and The Menzingers. I played shows, I wrote music, I got closer with friends. The fall/winter weren’t kind to me mentally. I’ve had a few mild anxiety attacks. I did see Coheed and The Menzingers a second time each in October/November. My band started recording a new EP a few weeks ago which is sounding amazing so far. I sold 60-something shirts of a design I created. It’s been a long time since I was motivated to make something like that and it really paid off.

2018 had a lot of good parts, and a lot of bad parts, but that’s no surprise. I want 2019 to be a year of change and growth. I want to find myself being more confident, going on more dates, meeting more people, writing more music, getting my shit more together. I want to reach out and get help for my mental illnesses. I want to become a better me. I want to feel like I’m worth it.

I apologize if you actually read all of this. I had a lot of feelings to get out.

I was in an auto accident without insurance. What am I facing?

I was in a car accident yesterday. I live in California. I had no insurance at the time, although I was unaware that my girlfriend had not sent in my quarterly paryment and was actually driving without insurance for almost 3 months. 1: We have a lot of catching up to do...

Honestly, I’m unsure of where to start. I feel as if my brain has blocked out quite a few large chunks of these past few, quite chaotic, months. Over a year ago was, undoubtedly, the beginning of my mental health downfall. Yes, I was struggling prior to that, but this was something else. I had a strong lack of self worth. I was paranoid that nobody in my life loved me, because I couldn’t understand how anyone would or could. The point is, I’m doing a lot better now. I’m not quite where I envisioned myself turning 21; living in Dallas, out of my parents house, but I’m okay with it and that’s what matters. I think I might take some community college classes this upcoming semester. I still would really like to pursue a career in Social Work. I’m nervous-excited to start school again. I think it will be good for me. I’m beginning to find more security in being alone; not to say I’m isolating myself, I’m not. Maybe I’m just becoming more independent; I’m not sure.

After I left Austin in April, I went to a residential treatment center in Tennessee. There were ups and downs, but overall I’m glad I went- mostly because I met some friends that are pretty important to me. I did a lot of art while I was there: clay, jewelry-making, even some hand-sewing (I made my friend a stuffed animal made of his sweat-pants and my green winter gloves. It looked very…. handmade). We had a therapy group there called “Forest Immersion” which was my favorite; the contents were basically that of the name. 1-2 times a week we could try to get on the list to do animal therapy, where we got to go to a farm and play with the animals. The sheep were my favorite. Of course we also had processing and dbt and all those other not-so-fun types of therapy, that are necessary...

After the residential program I moved to North Dakota. I was not ready to move anywhere. I was there for about a week and honestly that’s all I want to say about that.

Now I’m back in DFW. I’ve been doing quite a bit of therapy and AA meetings. I have a sponsor now and she’s very sweet. I’ll be here for awhile. I miss my friends a lot. I don’t have many here, but I’m okay. It just makes seeing people extra special. I painted and redecorated my room recently- which made me happy. I bought some plants too! Bug, my cat, killed my pothos and monstera in Austin so I bought those and an elephant ear plant from home depot :).

In upcoming news: I’m going to Washington for my birthday and that will be fun. I’m going to try to see where Twin Peaks was filmed and eat at the RR (Double R) Diner (now known as the Twede’s Cafe- I think… correct me if I’m wrong).

Life is pulling itself back together- slowly but surely. I miss everyone. I hope to see you all soon, but in the meantime- know I love you and I’m always here to talk :)

Character Ramblings for Wyrd!

At Wyrd’s behest, I’m trying to write down a little master post of some recent characters she bullied— I mean enabled— me to create. This is for our casual Loserverse world— i.e. the fast-and-loose All The Myths Are True low fantasy trope where a bunch of well intentioned idiots try to get by in an apartment complex for largely mythical creatures. I’ve accidentally made up a lot of new side characters in the past month and it’s getting hard to keep track of them, so here we go!

THE HOMESTEADING SHAPESHIFTER TRIO: AKA NELL, LEONORA AND BARNES

I’m listing these three together on their own because they are an active “couple” (… trio? I’m not sure what the right polyamory term is) who all live together in a more rural part of the county on some acreage generationally owned and tended by Nora’s family line. Their personal plot is pretty manageable (just a few acres) and a small portion of the entire property. They have a little flock of maybe 2 dozen combined sheep and goats, some chickens, and possibly an alpaca. The land is woodsy and picturesque with an old country house they share.

Nell J. Harriet, aka Nell: approximately 32 years old, born intersex, happily nonbinary (pronouns are ‘they’). The tallest of the bunch at around 6’ even, with a pale wiry frame and knobby, angular corners all over. Jet black hair with a striking chunk of white smack dab at the front of the widow’s peak like the trail of a dog’s blaze, one solid brown eye, one split tweaky blue/brown mess. Shifted form is a black and white border collie with (surprise!) heterochromia and a chunky white blaze cutting through the forehead right at the widow’s peak.

Despite being born to a mother with a long family history of (gene-recessive) shifters cropping up every generation, Nell was still a surprise to everyone involved, given that their father had presumably been human. Their mother— who I’ll call Meryl for now— comes from a fairly mundane lineage of canine shifter (while being a non-shifter Rr carrier herself) which typically manifests in early childhood and has a certain period of semi-conscious malleability during the formative years in which things like coat color, length, ear set, and other minor (external) features can be changed through great effort and trial/error before eventually “settling” into a constant, unique physical identity with time. They heal several times faster than average humans, scar less, and tend to show greater physical resilience, taking a few seconds to painlessly and more-or-less fluidly change shape, but lack any kind of “burst healing” mechanic or unusual magical attributes.

Everyone else in the family before Nell had turned out some kind of pleasantly functional “mutt” shape in the end, but Nell erupted onto the scene as a full blown black-and-white border collie looking thing from day 1 of the change as a bouncy toddler. Meryl could only guess that the father (long since vanished from their lives with no hard feelings, the affair was brief) was a similar, incidentally compatible shapeshifter himself, but that’s about as well as anyone can guess since he’s not around to ask.

Nell, for their part, is exactly the kind of plucky, sunshiny, high-energy velcro person you would expect from a border collie on two legs. They struggled in early childhood with some rough ADHD and OCD type tendencies, but managed to get through public schooling with the help of family support/tutoring, and wound up not pursuing college in favor of trying out a more rural living, instead. They met Leonora while bouncing around odd jobs a couple years after high school and the rest is history. They’re much happier now with a largely outdoor existence and animals to tend to, burning off the excess energy that plagued them for years without a direction prior to homesteading. They’re one of those types who thrives with an outlet for physical and mental stimulation but loses their mind for lack of it. As one would expect from any good BC. The farming life is an ideal fit.

Leonora Basso: aka Nora, but only if you’re close to her. Approximately 34-ish, a shameless bohemian woman from a long line of shifters almost functionally identical to Raiker/Nicky’s species, with the exception of taking on the form of giant (thanks, conservation of mass) white maremma type guardian dogs instead of akbash. Built square, stocky, and a little short (probably around 5’4’’), with olive/bronze-y skin, brown eyes, and a giant fluffy mess of fluffy, platinum white-blond hair the exact color and texture of maremma fur.

She’s chill, with admirable patience for things that warrant it and a long fuse for small annoyances, though she’s also the only member of the three to ever knock someone’s teeth out, so take that with a grain of salt. Like any good guardian dog, she’s placid until you start messing with her flock— literally or metaphorically. Then she’ll be the one to quietly walk across the bar and slam your head into the table. She met Nell during a trip to the inner city by complete happenstance when the two hit it off over conversation, during which she invited them to come visit her farm over a public touring weekend, and within weeks wound up dating. Their relationship was exclusive up until Barnes came along and none of them are quite sure how it happened, but they’ve never been in a better place.

Chancellor Barneston Augustine-Kingslay, aka Barnes: and ONLY Barnes, okay. Repeat his full name N E V E R or he’ll just, seriously, die. Of embarrassment. The youngest of the bunch at around 27-28 or so, Barnes was adopted by his (human) parents as a (human, presumably) infant, and had a perfectly normal (human, presumably) childhood until one day when his mother came in and found that her napping four year old was suddenly a napping 40 pound maine coon cat— or at least, what LOOKED a whole lot like one. Needless to say, the following week was a scramble of buying every “Help! My Child is a Shapeshifter, What Do I Do!” parenting book off Amazon and learning how to cope with a toddler who could suddenly vault over double stacked safety gates unaided, but they learned how to adapt, and life continued on happily for the little family anyway. He’s an average sort, and arguably handsome to some: about 5’8’’, not especially pale or tan, hazel eyed, and sporting what looks like perpetually dark-ticked mouse brown hair, cut short. He performed well enough in public school with a mostly human peer group who went largely unaware of his “talents” and even went on to earn a bachelor’s in business/finances/something akin, which seemed like the thing to do. He wouldn’t describe himself as unhappy in his accomplishments; by every metric he was doing fine in life, and could easily figure out a career in some white collar job that paid his bills well enough.

He just couldn’t shake a certain feeling of restlessness and dissatisfaction about the idea, and wound up making a habit of weekend demos and classes to see what else was out there in the world: one of which happened to be a sheep shearing weekend out at the Basso Homestead. On a whim, Barnes attended a demo headed by none other than Leonora while she was using a feisty ram (named Ramses) to walk visitors through the shearing process, Ramses was being fighty, Nell wasn’t around to help wrangle him, and Barnes, thinking he was capable, volunteered (despite Nora warning him repeatedly that rams were pretty feisty) to help hold him down.

… Needless to say he earned a spectacular nut shot via ram horns in the groin and wound up sitting out the rest of the day with an ice pack and a lot of sympathy, but it got him talking to Nora, and then Nell, and the three of them just gelled in a way that kept bringing them back together. He’s realized in hindsight that he’s much happier in the suburbs than the big city, and enjoys putting his schooling to use by handling the home taxes and business numbers.

(Fun fact: years later, when it Ramses got too big for his britches and was sent to the abattoir, they were given part of him by the Basso family and cooked a roast to celebrate the asshole sheep that brought them all together. Ramses was delicious.)

Barnes, incidentally, still has no idea just WHAT kind of shifter he actually is thanks to being a doorstep baby/anonymous adoption acquisition by the foster folks— aside from a giant 100+ pound country cat, that is. He’s observed that his shift is nearly as swift as Leonora’s, though there are queer persistences that he seems to have (pierced ears not healing instantly or trying to close after a change) that she lacks. Coupled with the fact that he seems to be a magnet for comically mundane/irritating paranormal activity, he’s put in his research (mostly as a boredom hobby, not a necessary pursuit) but keeps drawing blanks on potential labels for his identity. The TRUTH of the matter (which he’ll probably never know in canon) is that he’s actually a cait sith— born in the form of a cat, rather than a human, and bewitched by his mother to retain a human form as long as possible in the hopes that it would get him a better chance at finding loving parents. His shifting has a much heavier magical component to it than his SOs, though he has no real sense for it, and it’ll probably just be a mystery the rest of his life.

Wow, yeah, this got super long! I’ll make a separate post for the other losers I’ve made up lately, though these three are the most fleshed out so far.

Two visits to Earth (RR fanfic)

A youthful indiscretion comes back to haunt Rocket as he discovers it has dramatically impacted the lives of pretty much everyone on Earth.

Note: This is a separate AU from my other stories like Sanctuary. It’s mostly a setup for a punchline.

Two visits to Earth By Woozletania

"Terra, Terra, Terra," Rocket grumbled. He flicked one planet after another off the screen. Once in a while, rather than discarding the display, he flicked it off to a side screen. "All he even talks about. D'ast Terrain music, d'ast Terran people. You'd think he never left that rock."

"I am Groot," observed the three foot tall tree in the co-pilot's seat.

"I know," Rocket said. He flicked a fourth world onto the side screen. "That's why I got curious."

The little two-man fighter he'd patched together from spare parts on the Quadrant brought back fond memories of the battle over Xandar. That had been great fun. Dancing in midair, taking out necrocraft. Being appreciated for once for what he was: an awesomely skilled pilot and warrior. Nothing cheered Rocket up like a good firefight, and that was one of the best.

"I am Groot," said Groot, as he held up a glossy paper card. On it was an strangely familiar brown animal and a lot of alien text that resolved as he looked at it thanks to his translator implant. Procyon Lotor, it said at the top. North American Raccoon.

"I know already," Rocket grumped. "Why do you think we're going? I'm never gonna admit it to Pete but that does look like me. And it looks like...well, it was before I met you, bud."

Rocket had half a dozen worlds on the side screen now and with skilful pokes of a claw he shifted them around, looking for a familiar configuration. None of them were Terra but if he was right Centaurus was close to their target. It was halfway across the galaxy, but none of the individual jumps were too bad.

Rocket leaned back in the chair as he thought. The little animal on the card was familiar. Too familiar. Though he "saw" things as much by their smell and touch - his little hands were a hundred times as sensitive as a man's - as sight, his eyes were keen too.

He remembered things like the brown animal on the card, remembered the sight and smell and feel of them.

"It was right after I escaped from the lab," he said. "Blew the place up, took an aircar. Managed to get to the spaceport and stole a ship. I had to take a junker and its navcom was crap. I got away from the patrol ships but crashed on a low-tech planet. There were...things there."

It wasn't his proudest moment. Rocket was one of a kind, but the local animals that showed up as he repaired the ship were eerily like him. They couldn't talk, but they were curious and mostly friendly. The aggressive ones, some as large as himself, were no match for his cybernetically augmented strength. He didn't even have to shoot them, just chase them away. That left just the friendly ones. The very, very friendly ones.

Rocket shook his head. He was young and stupid and lonely back then. It was long before he met Groot. They were just animals. Even if it'd really been Terra he crashed on way back then, he was the only one who knew what happened there. And that's the way it would stay. He'd just started to get comfortable with the other Guardians and he didn't need a youthful indiscretion getting in the way.

"Yeah, I'm curious," he admitted. He took the controls and guided the little ship through a series of jumps. "I just wanna see if it really was Terra I crashed on."

He remembered what they smelled like. The smell did something to him. Made him do things. He'd been there for what, a month or so, and how many of them did he meet? A hundred, two hundred? As soon as one group of them satisfied their curiosity about their strange furry visitor and left, more showed up. He'd chase away the aggressive ones, then...

"Another half hour, bud," he said. He didn't say the rest. Because if he'd really been on Terra, and the brown animal on the card really was the same thing he'd met on that world, then Pete was right. He really was a 'raccoon', or at least, his mother had been. His memories of her amounted to nothing more than warm fur and safety, as he'd been taken from her before his eyes even opened. He never found out what they did with her. All he knew was what they did to him.

Rocket shook his head again. No time to get maudlin, or angry. He was just curious, is all. If all went well he'd know by the end of the day whether his species came from Terra. He'd find out and move on, never admitting to Pete or the others what he'd found.

"Centaurus," he said as they emerged from jump. A few taps of his claws brought up a system scan. Trinary system, two major stars and a red dwarf. Various worlds, including two in the liquid water zone, but not inhabited. There were the Kree nav beacons, just where the guide said they'd be. Kree had been interested in Terra for centuries. They'd even done some genetic tinkering on humans, just as the Celestials had long ago.

The Kree had a research station and military presence here in Centaurus but packed up and left years back when their efforts to take advantage of the Celestial tinkering failed. They managed to create something called Inhumans but it hadn't worked out well for them at all. Something about a prophecy and a threat to their Supremor.

That wasn't why he was here. He acknowledged a computerized interrogation from a buoy and nodded as his displays updated.

"That's what I figured," he said. "Terra isn't on galactic charts but there's a jump route plotted from here. And probably from other directions too." If he'd really jumped there it hadn't been from Centaurus.

"Last jump," he said, and smiled as they entered hyperspace. Sure, the trip was to satisfy his curiosity, but that didn't mean he couldn't profit. If nothing else he could pick up some Terran music for Pete and claim he got it from a junker, just like Pete got that "travel bed for anthropomorphics, size four" for him that was absolute a pet bed made on the planet they were about to visit.

Boom. Terra. They came out of jump and a blue and green world as pretty as any he'd seen loomed close ahead. Then an alarm shrilled and Rocket's eyes widened.

"Look all all the traffic! Das't, this isn't supposed to be here!" There were at least a hundred ships of various sizes on routes between Terra and the two closest planets, both in the early stages of terraforming. More were making their way to and from the planet's moon and even more making runs out to the local asteroid belt. At least three orbital shipyards around the mother planet were building more.

"Hold on bud," Rocket growled as he brought the little fighter to a halt shy of the planet. There were massive weapon emplacements on the moon, planetary defense fortresses in Terra's desert regions, battle stations in orbit, sleek purpose-built warships among the freighters and mining ships. No one was shooting but whoever it was was definitely ready for a fight.

A chill ran down Rocket's spine as they were scanned. A dozen ships and stations were scanning them and he learned a lot from the signals. The main thing he learned was that he had no idea who was doing the scanning. These weren't Kree, or Skull, or Chitauri, or Badoon, or even Shi'ar. He quickly checked other known racial tech signatures as well. The Colonizers from Rigel? No. The...Kymellians? Asgard? Nope.

Several nearby ships were looking them over but no one armed weapons and Rocket took that as a good sign. There was enough firepower out there to reduce them to an expanding cloud of plasma a hundred times over.

"Okay, someone wants to talk," Rocket said. He'd monitored a thousand transmissions since they arrived but they were all encrypted. This one was in the clear. He tapped a control with a claw and turned to the screen.

"I am Groot!"

Rocket didn't say anything for a moment, just sat there with his mouth hanging open. The three furry figures on the screen were not so shy.

"It is him!" The female turned toward the closer male. "The scans did not lie. It is he!"

The older male squinted at Rocket through the screen, his one cybernetic eye whirring. "It cannot be. It must be another fake, another attempt to take advantage of us."

"It is not," the younger male said. This one had a military-style uniform that clearly incorporated close fitting body armor, unlike the simple, if decorated harnesses his companions wore. "Genetic scans are absolute. It is he." He looked up from his datapad and gathered himself for a moment before speaking.

"Welcome, honored progenitor."

For a moment Rocket stared blankly at the three raccoons on the screen. Behind them a humie worked, his dress and attitude showing that she was clearly subservient to the raccoons.

Even as he gawked his fingers flicked instinctively across the controls. They'd sent him a brief synopsis of their history and it popped up on his console.

'Ten years ago,' it read. 'The Great Progenitor visited us from the stars and lay with the Mothers. He passed to his progeny his mind, his skill, and they on to their progeny. The first conflict with humans soon followed as we proved smarter and better with technology. The states of Missouri and Alabama were ceded to us after the Battle of Kansas City. Next came the Virginia Uprising...'

"This can't be right," Rocket said. The three raccoons on the screen were respectfully silent. "Even if they all got pregnant, there were only a few dozen. There are millions of them now. Hundreds of millions."

The display on his panel updated in response to his question. 'Numbers were small until the great geneticist Bent-Tail isolated the Progenitor's genes and built a virus that communicated them to all the other procyonids.'

"Aw, man." Rocket looked up from the pad. There were still humans down there, billions of them. But from his displays, the raccoons - his descendants - were firmly in charge of Terra and its solar system. His children managed to Uplift not just some of the native raccoons, but all of them, and somehow his own Uplifted intellect and skill with technology had passed to all of them. Rocket thought about how much damage he could do if left alone with technology, then multiplied that by hundreds, thousands of raccoons.

It hadn't been completely one-sided, but with raccoon populations already established in many human cities the sudden Uplift gave them access to human technology in great quantities. The humans never had a chance. They'd been conquered in less than two years. Some of them had sided with the raccoons, but it wouldn't have mattered in the end. Super intelligent, fast breeding, tech savvy raccoons simply overwhelmed them.

"You left parts from your repaired ship on Earth, honored progenitor," the female raccoon on the screen said. "It was enough for our smartest ones to take us into space. Please, dock at the indicated port. We have much to share with you."

Rocket watched a dozen ships form up as an honor guard. The airwaves were full of chatter and they'd politely provided him with a decryption key. Everyone, absolutely everyone was talking about him. They couldn't fake something on this scale. Not even the Skrull could. This was really happening.

"Welcome, progenitor," said the older raccoon on the screen. "Welcome to the First Raccoon Dominion."

"Okaaaay," Rocket said under his breath. "Okay, bud, you listen real careful.". His skilled hands guided the little fighter into the port, where dozens of raccoons and a few humans anxiously awaited his arrival. Raccoons and humans ran up to connect refueling lines and docking tiedowns as cameras were set up to record what they must consider an historic moment. Rocket looked across at Groot.

"Quill. Must. Never. Know."
