i have suddenly become obsessed with a theme that HoO established but never proceeded to extrapolate on, which is:

You are Percy Jackson, and you have been swapped with a boy who was allegedly everyone's favorite person, but they have decided to replace him with you. They just met you. You stand next to his best friend and the people he's known his entire life. In his home. In his cloak. In his place. They stopped looking for him.

You are Jason Grace, and you have just found out you have a long lost sister who completely replaced you in her life with this girl you just met. Your lives and personalities are mirrors. She is you, living the life you were robbed of.

You are Annabeth Chase, and you have just become starkly aware that you have been inhabiting the void left behind by your best friend's long lost brother. You and Luke were just replacements for him. Now you have to look him in the eyes when he has nothing and know you took that life from him.

You are Piper McLean, and you have just found out your relationship is fake and built entirely on the memories of Annabeth Chase. You have been given a boyfriend when hers has been taken away. They see moments, sometimes. Scary moments where it hit them like deja vu. But, aside from their initial fears when meeting their neighbors, they find it hard to think of the Turners in the same breath as the Wells family.

Hazel’s parents are just so… different. Relieving even. There's a lot of "Never"s with Hazel's parents. Cosmo and Wanda can leave Hazel’s side for long periods of time, without worrying.

Not that they ever stop worrying. They still do. But its a first that their worries are unwarranted.

One of the best things about Disco Elysium by far is that it does not fear ugly women. The world is full of ugly men, but ugly women are so hard to come by.

#I'm not calling the characters ugly btw #i don't believe any one can be ugly #i do not care for beauty standards and thus i don't rank people based on how “ugly” or “pretty” they are #but the characters in DE do not meet the conventional beauty standards and look like actual people with unique faces #and thus would be considered “ugly”#and that is so important to me. i go feral whenever media represents how people look like in real life and not how they look like in the #fictional parallel universe where everyone is a model and where a majority of the movies take place #because irl you don't have to be a model to be desirable #the most attractive man in any video game I've ever played has a receding hairline and a big nose and thick glasses and a small chin #and not only is representing realistic people. just good. in general. but it makes the character of Dolores Dei stand out so much more which #works for the game so well. she's barely human. she's a deity- a myth- a legend. the only version that exists of her now is the one with #glowing lungs. she's perfectly beautiful because she's inhuman. the fact that everybody else looks so human only highlights how inhuman she #has become yk?#if everyone was as conventionally attractive as her then she wouldn't stand out. we wouldn't get why she's so special.#disco elysium #disco elysium analysis #media analysis #beauty standards #this is only one aspect of how this game portrays real people btw. as someone interested in character design this just immediately stood out #to me #the first time i noticed it was when i first met garte and the second time was when i met ruby because neither are conventionally desirable #oh my fucking god the nerds who complain about a woman with a model face having body hair in a video game would perish if they played this #mainstream game/movie studios catering to western masses could never

#I just realized that some of the dates aren't coinciding. The current Beatrix is from Season 3 and not Year 4038.#It is likely that Year 4038 was the year she woke up after her slumber cycle and also the same year she met Hunter.#He was definitely much different before her! Not as welcoming or laid-back as he's seen later on in the story.#After becoming Hunter‚ he joined rescue teams in Fusionsprunt city in a desperate attempt to fix his mistakes.#He got increasingly depressed over the few months he worked there but managed to solve a few cases and even get his job as a technician.#Aloof and irritable. He was constantly on the edge and paranoid about having his identity discovered.#He would exhaust himself hours on end because of his guilt‚ which would result in accumulated stress and bleeding.#After he found Guto‚ he was forced to change his lifestyle and bad habits into healthier ones for him.#You could say the guilt still weighted heavily on his shoulders‚ but Hunter certainly started taking care of himself again.#fusionsprunt #fusionsprunt hunter

Thinking about "So Long, London" as one does and the "I'm pissed off you let me give you all that youth for free" which is devastating enough on its own as a succinct shorthand of saying "I gave you some of my most formative years thinking we were committed to the same life plans together" (as in building a family life together) but with ~everything~ can also be a statement of her entrusting him with her youthful hopes and dreams and joy and earnestness only for it all to be cast aside and not returned (and at worst, weaponized).

#especially after everything she went through before they met #that it would have taken a lot for her to let someone in #and trust in them #and reconnect with that side of herself #and you compare her demeanour in 2017-2022 #to how she is now #and it's like a completely different world #and there are a lot of reasons for that and not just *** don't get me wrong #but you see the way she - to quote a certain someone - has such a love of life #and is so earnest in everything she does #and the way she is present in the world now is way more like her teenage self than how she'd been in the last decade #and not in terms of maturity because she's clearly a grownup #but just in her zest for life and her embracing of who she is #idk idk it's a lot #writing letters addressed to the fire #this will flop because it's the middle of the afternoon during a show day but i had to get it off my chest
