BUDDY DADDIES (2023)

Professional hitmen Kazuki Kurusu — who lost his wife and unborn child in a tragic accident involving a target, and Rei Suwa — heir to the Suwa organization, a vicious crime syndicate led by his affectionless father, under dire circumstances, end up adopting 4-year-old Miri Unasaka — a bright young child who grew to view them both as her Papas, and with time, showed Kazuki and Rei that despite their pasts and presents, they could be worthy of happiness. They, too, could be loved.

I know we all have our own opinions on P.A. Works throwing this line into the ending of the final episode:

BUT!! The English dub is now out.

In the English dub, Miri says this phrase a little differently. She says that Kazuki “went out drinking with the ladies.”

This sounds a lot less like a pathetically belated attempt at no homo and a lot more like saying the ladies are his friend group, which would make sense, seeing how Kazuki immediately made friends with the daycare moms back when Miri was little.

It’s a small change, and honestly could just have been a logistical (mouth flap) choice, but it blends in with their prologue far better than the original phrase in Japanese had done. It’s even more open-ended to the nature of his and Rei’s relationship than the original, which I think is a smart choice, given how many potentially queer categories they can fall under when no label is given.

The English dub for this show has been a delight from start to finish, really, so this was the perfect way to end the series, imo. I’m gonna miss them. 🥲

Crazy how Buddy Daddies went from initially a gay SpyXFamily clone to the general public to such a strong contender for best Winter anime of 2023. The fact that it’s an original anime without a manga, and so fans watched on every week as it twisted, turned, and surprised and we had no supplementary materials. Not only was it heartwarming and heartbreaking, it had such a solid story and didn’t reach out to far or spiral away from the core “found family” plot like so many other anime originals do.

I throughly enjoyed the story of the Oil Baron, Comedian, and their young daughter who has a bright future ahead of her.
