Help Save the World of TTRPGs and Their Creators.
Okay I’m being a little dramatic, but at the same time I’m pretty serious. This is a call to action, and the livelihoods of myself and lots of other people, many of them (like myself) disabled, are depending on it. This is a post about why, what you can do about it, and (perhaps least often answered) how.
This post is actually an accompaniment to another discussion by someone else. If you don’t want to listen to a 90-minute in-depth discussion of much of what I’m about to tell you, you can just keep reading. Otherwise, click here or here and listen to this either before or after you read this post. (They’re the same thing, just different sources.)
If you have ever made or reblogged posts urging people to switch from Google Chrome to Firefox, you should be willing to at least give a try to other TTRPGs besides D&D5e for much the same principle reasons. I’m not telling you you have to hate D&D5e, and I’m not telling you you have to quit D&D5e, I’m just asking you to try some other games. If you don’t like them, and you really want to go back to D&D5e, then go back to D&D5e. But how can you really know you won’t like other games if you have literally never tried them? This post is a post about why and how to try them. If you’re thinking right now that you don’t want to try them, I urge you to look below to see if any of your reasons for not wanting to try them are covered there. Because the monopoly that WotC’s D&D5e has on TTRPGs as a whole is bad for me as a game designer, and it’s bad for you as a game player. It’s even bad for you if you like D&D5e. A fuller discussion of the why and how this is the case can be found in the links above, but it isn’t fully necessary for understanding this post, it’ll just give you a better perspective on it.
If you’re a D&D5e player, I’m sure at some point or another, you’ve been told “play a different game”, and it must get frustrating without the context of why and how. This post is here to give you the why and how.
[The following paragraph has been edited because the original wording made it sound like we think all weird TTRPGs suck.]
Before that though, one more thing to get out of the way. I'm going to level with you. There’s a lot of weird games out there.
Tumblr media
You are gonna see a lot of weird TTRPGs when you take the plunge. Many of them try to completely reinvent what a TTRPG even is, and some fail spectacularly, others really do even up doing something very interesting even if they don't end up being what a core TTRPG player wants. But not every indie RPG is a Bladefish, lots and lots of them are more 'traditional' and will feel very familiar to you, I promise. (And you might even find that you like the weird experimental bladefish type ones, these are usually ideal for one-session plays when your usual group can't play your usual game for any reason.)
You're also going to probably see a lot of very bad games, and man have I got some stories of very bad games, but for now I'm just saying to make sure you read the reviews, or go through curators (several of which will be listed below), before you buy.
Now that that is out of the way, I’m going to go down a list of concerns you may have for why not, and then explain the how.
“I don’t want to learn a whole new set of rules after I already spent so much time learning D&D5e.”
Learning a new set of rules is not going to be as hard as you think. Most other TTRPGs aren’t like that. D&D5e is far on the high end of the scale for TTRPGs being hard and time-consuming to learn and play. If you’ve only played D&D5e, it might trick you into thinking that learning any TTRPG is an overwhelmingly time-consuming task, but this is really mostly a D&D5e problem, not a TTRPG problem as a whole.
“D&D5e has all of these extra online tools to help you play it.”
So what? People have been playing TTRPGs without the help of computers for 50 years. To play a well-designed TTRPG you won’t need a computer. Yes, even if you're bad at math. There are some TTRPGs out there that barely even use math.
“I’m too invested in the narrative and characters of my group’s current ongoing D&D5e campaign to switch to something else.”
There are other games, with better design made by better people for less money, that are the same kind of game as D&D5e, that your current characters, lore, and plot will fit right into and do it better. And no, it's not just Pathfinder, there's others.
“I can’t afford to play another TTRPG.”
You probably can. If you’ve only played D&D5e, you might have been made to think that TTRPGs are a very expensive hobby. They aren’t. D&D5e is actually uniquely expensive, costing more than 3x more than the next most expensive TTRPG I can think of right now. Even on the more expensive end, other TTRPG books will cost you no more than $60, most will cost you less than $20, and a whole lot of them are just free. If you somehow still can’t afford another TTRPG, come to the A.N.I.M. TTRPG Book club mentioned below, nominate the game, and if it wins the vote we will straight up buy it for you.
(By the way, if you had any of the above concerns about trying other games besides D&D5e, that really makes it sound like you are in a textbook abusive relationship with D&D5e. This is how abusers control their partners, and how empires control their citizens, by teaching you to think that nothing could ever get any better, and even though they treat you bad, the Other will treat you even worse.)
“If I don’t play D&D5e, which TTRPG should I play?”
That’s a pretty limited question to be asking, because there will be no one TTRPG for everything. And no, D&D5e is not the one TTRPG for everything, Hasbro’s marketing team is just lying to you. (Pathfinder and PbtA are not the one system for everything either!) Do you only play one video game or only watch one movie or only read one book? When you finish watching an action movie like Mad Max, and then you want to watch a horror movie, do you just rewind Mad Max and watch it over again but this time you act scared the whole time? No, you watch a different movie. I’m asking you to give the artistic medium of TTRPGs the same respect you would give movies.
“I want to play something besides D&D5e, but my friends won’t play anything else!”
I have several answers to this.
Try showing them this post.
If that doesn’t work: Make them. Put your foot down. This works especially well if you are the DM. Tell them you won’t run another session of D&D5e until they agree to give what you want to do at least one try instead of always doing only what they want to do. This is, like, playing 101. We learned this in kindergarten. If your friend really wants to play something else, you should give their game a try, or you’re not really being a very good friend.
If that doesn’t work, find another group. This doesn’t even mean that you have to leave your existing group. A good place to start would be the A.N.I.M. TTRPG Book Club which will be mentioned and linked below. You can also go to the subreddit of any game you’re interested in and probably meet people there who have the same problem you do and want to put together a group to play something other than D&D5e. You might get along great with these people, you might not, but you won’t know until you try. Just make sure to have a robust “session zero” so everyone is on the same page. This is a good practice for any group but it is especially important for a group made of players you’ve just met.
“I only watch actual plays.”
Then watch actual plays of games that aren’t D&D5e. These podcasts struggle for the same reasons that indie RPGs struggle, because of the brand recognition and brand loyalty D&D5e has, despite their merit. I don’t watch actual plays, or else I would be able to list more of them. So, anyone who does watch actual plays, please help me out by commenting on this post with some non-D&D5e actual plays you like. And please do me a favor and don’t list actual plays that only play one non-D&D5e system, list ones that go through a variety of systems. The first one I can think of is Tiny Table.
“I can just homebrew away all the problems with D&D5e.”
Even though I want to, I’m not going to try and argue that you can’t actually homebrew away all the problems with D&D5e. Instead, I’m going to ask you why you’re buying two $50 rulebooks just to throw away half the pages. In most other good RPGs, you don’t need to change the rules to make them fun, they’re fun right out the box.
“But homebrewing D&D5e into any kind of game is fun! You can homebrew anything out of D&D5e!”
Firstly, I promise that this is not unique to D&D5e. Secondly, then you would probably have more fun homebrewing a system that gives you a better starting point for reaching your goal. Also, what if I told you that there are entire RPG systems out there that are made just for this? There are RPG systems that were designed for the purpose of being a toolbox and set of materials for you to work with to make exactly the game you want to make. Some examples are GURPS, Savage Worlds, Basic RolePlaying, Caltrop Core, and (as much as I loathe it) PbtA.
“I’m not supporting WotC’s monopoly because I pirate all the D&D5e books.”
Then you’re still not supporting the smaller developers that this monopoly is crushing, either.
Now, here’s the how. Because I promise you, there’s not just one, but probably a dozen other RPGs out there that will scratch your exact itch.
Here’s how to find them. This won’t be a comprehensive list because I’ve already been typing this for like 3 hours already. Those reading this, please go ahead and comment more to help fill out the list.
First, I’m gonna plug one of my own major projects, because it’s my post. The A.N.I.M. TTRPG Book Club. It’s a discord server that treats playing TTRPGs like a book club, with the goal of introducing members to a wide variety of games other than D&D5e. RPGs are nominated by members, then we hold a vote to decide what to read and play for a short campaign, then we repeat. There is no financial, time, or schedule investment required to join this book club, I promise it is very schedule-friendly, because we assign people to different groups based of schedule compatibility. You don’t have to play each campaign, or any campaign, you can just read along and participate in discussion that way. And if you can’t afford to buy the rulebook we’re going to be reading, we will make sure you get a PDF of it for free. That is how committed we are to getting non-D&D5e RPGs into people’s hands. Here is an invite link.
Next, there are quite a few tumblr blogs you can follow to get recommendations shown to you frequently.
@indierpgnewsletter
@indie-ttrpg-of-the-day
@theresattrpgforthat
@haveyouplayedthisttrpg
@indiepressrevolution
Plenty of podcasts, journalists, and youtubers out there do in-depth discussions of different systems regularly, a couple I can think of off the top of my head are:
Storyteller Conclave (I’m actually going to be interviewed live on this show on April 10th!)
Seth Skorkowsky
Questing Beast
The Gaming Table
Rascal News
Lastly, you can just go looking. Browse r/rpg, drivethrurpg.com, indie press revolution, and itch.io.
Now, if you really want to support me and my team specifically Eureka: Investigative Urban Fantasy, our debut TTRPG, is going to launch on Kickstarter on April 10th and we need all the help we can get. Set a reminder from the Kickstarter page through this link.

PSA: Telling Google AI To Go Fuck Itself
So we all know Google is shoving AI down our throats, recently, right? And we didn't ask
On top of the fact that generative AI is SUPER fucking bad for the environment (1) (2) (3)(4)
There's no official way to turn off Google's AI shit, BUT if you use Ublock to block ads (and it's generally recommended by the FBI you should use an ad blocker in this day and age) THERE IS
This reddit post from their subreddit explains the filter you need to use to stop seeing this shit at the very least
go forth and tell google ai to fuck off
P.S. Also, Ublock is capable of blocking youtube ads. You're welcome :)
(also, while you're at it, you should take the time to consider switching browsers. i'm personally a fan of firefox and have been using it for well over a decade at this point as i've never been much of a chrome person)

Actually having so much fun with Linux it's unreal
Had a small annoyance yesterday, after fixing the last of the actual issues I've had with my Nvidia drivers 'n shit: My Firefox didn't have it's title bar buttons would only ever stay in the KDE Plasma title bar, without the usual option to DISABLE that bar and have them appear in line with the tabs.
It took me all of yesterday evening and most of today to finally fix it. I've tried every single fix. I've tried switching Desktop Environments. So many things. The fix was so easy it was kinda infuriating but also so obvious
All it took was uninstalling and purging every single instance of firefox, its extensions and plugins, manually, one command line at a time removing every single remaining folder and file because some decided to stay despite Purge, uninstalling every single non KDE Plasma DE, especially MATE being a huge bitch - again, uninstalling every remaining part of it manually, then doing a clean reinstall of my DE of choice, making sure my pc NEVER even LOOKS at the snap of firefox, configuring a proper mozilla apt-get source, getting a clean deb install and boom! it works!
and I am not even mad! I am actually so happy? Like. This has been a whole project. and a huge learning opportunity. Lotsa mistakes! But like. I fucked up bad - then I just reinstalled shit. A lot of it can be done straight from the terminal. Every single mistake I did was reversible. It's so. clean and easy and I don't have to bother with windows bullshit and im so happy

25 jan. saturday
i am supposed to work today but i don't feel like doing so. i have gotten into the bad habit of working on sundays and resting on saturdays. work up at 12 in the noon.
washed my hairs. i only wash them on saturdays and wednesdays. have switched to a new shampoo. my hair fall just won't stop, meh.
i am supposed to go and watch ramayan today. it's hub mall at 8 in the night though. i watched dororo till ep 11 or 12 in the afternoon. then created a malice mizer playlist on my alternative spot. i don't think I'd be listening to that playlist though. the artist is tagged as the uploader, so that makes it difficult to scrobble on lastfm. yt and firefox ftw.
i will be riding my bicycle tomorrow, but there's no air in the tyres. left house at 6:30, got air filled. left for goregaon at 7. went to kamal amrohi bus stop. 706 was packed so let it pass. passed another bus because I didn't know that it goes to hub mall as well. got a-60. hopped on it. and before I could completely enter, my left arm got stuck. it pained, a lot. i had to ask the conductor to open the door. he rang the bell, but the driver didn't pay attention. he rang the bell again and the door opened, and i was in. my left arm was in immense pain. as if the skin had been peeled off. i had my hand stuck previously in another bus back in summer 2022, but it hadn't pain this much. i don't even remember feeling any pain that time.
got in theatre. it was fairly filled. i had opted for the hindi 2d version. in the past week, i had received two emails, stating that people were criticising the new hindi dub. the new hindi dub was actually required because they couldn't restore the audio from the original version.
well, i didn't want to complain because I had waited for too long. and i actually wanted to listen panchvati man bhavan upwan by sadhna sargam. but then the songs started to play in sanskrit. i felt sad, but then ok. it's understandable. i love this movie sm. i grew up with it.
the dialogues were not that great. they had made it simpler for understanding and they rather sounded preachy at times, unlike the original hindi version. voice acting was fine. video quality was restored well.
i got myself a sandwich in the interval. ate.
this is the only second time i have bought myself to eat anything in theatre. i don't like theatre food very much. i started feeling sleepy when hanuman went to himalaya. i tried to control my sleep. the last i remember watching was kumbhkaran getting killed, and then I slept. next thing ik, shree ram and maa sita were travelling back to ayodhya on pushpak vimaan. i had missed everything in between. god, how stupid i must be. i will never eat anything in theatre again ever. show ended at around 10:20 pm. whole time, my arm was hurting crazily.
i had promised my mother that i would be having dinner at home, so i didn't go to pizza hut. i did stand in queue for sundae in mcd, but left because it would have taken long. got a-60 again and reached home at around 11.
i just wanted to sleep now.
checked my letterboxd, this is the 11th film i watched alone.

nordvpn security
Hey you. ❗️
It's cyber. They're coming at us.
How about this then,
If we shut down the Internet...
They'll never be able to get to us.
This one, this one, this one.
I'm on a roll and it's coming.
I'm living in the doldrums💢.
I have been under cyber attack for 10 years now.
And it's still happening.
I'm still a stranger to the world.
You're not going to listen to my goofs.
I use nordvpn now. I use windows edge because it attacks me.
Now I use firefox. I do it on desktop with nordvpn.
It still interferes. I finally set it up and can configure Firefox for the web, although I also use Adguad with it.
I put in my basic email and password for Firefox, and an auxiliary password.
Then, set up the adguad settings from the top to the bottom.
I initialize my computer almost every day. Then I immediately put in the security settings.
⬇️
Security is a delicate setting with ESE security.
I take care not to be hijacked there. If you don't know, call ESET.
⬇️
windows is updating now. if windows is bad, initialize it.
It's going to be flushing out filtering garbage, because it has a virus🦠 in it. This also takes ⏰ time.
I would suggest you do a backup, but they use remote or powershell. I don't do backups these days.
Nordvpn has a lot of settings, VPN, threat protection, dark web mottling, device settings.
That's all I need.
Cyber threat syndrome so kill switch, split tunneling,
Add apps.

The good news is that it's a bit easier to maintain a clean fork of Firefox than of Chrome. There's a hundred little details of why, but it's pretty hard to make upstream Firefox so toxic that forks are impractical. I'm not saying it's impossible for Firefox to become that toxic, but it would be a really long road that would eventually be obvious to company leadership as a suicidal decision - Firefox is clinging to life by being the alternative to the technopanopticon.
That said, this is a very good reason to keep pressuring browser developers to have open source components with clear boundaries - I'm thinking of things like Gecko and Servo here. You really want most of the hard work to happen in places that can't be locked down by corporate interest, so that any nasty choices happen in the small and very replaceable glue layer.
I'm not purely or blindly an optimist here. It's really fucking troubling for Mozilla to be making these kinds of deal-with-the-devil decisions that, in the long term, cannot be aligned with the interests of their users. I know that Anonym (the acquired company) has built its identity on serving ads without spying. Least bad ad company they could have bought, probably, okay... but it has instantly aligned Mozilla financially against users being able to block ads. And that's with the charitable and unrealistic assumption - which I don't hold - that the technology will never be pivoted and rebranded to follow the More Money of the digital surveillance industry. Remember when Google changed their motto from "Don't be evil," and people freaked out about it, and those people were proven right? The slippery slope is not a fallacy here, it's an established pattern and the most reasonable expectation.
tl;dr: Don't panic immediately, but it might be a nice time to switch to a Firefox derivative you trust now.
Recently learned that a huge part of Firefox's funding comes from Google which sure sounds like Google has a monopoly on browsers

I start my new job at the library tomorrow. And I’m kind of panicking. I truly think I’ll have fun working there and the hours are great, but I’m nervous. Nervous about making a good first impression. Nervous about hearing my alarm and not being late. Nervous about starting a new job.
It’s 2:30. I’ve set my alarm for 6:30. And I’m still not asleep yet. 😞

Hoping someone can help me. I finally (FINALLY!) switched my browser over from Chrome to Firefox. Sadly, my main hold up was Tumblr, as I had everything set up perfectly in Chrome. I’m logged in and got all of my extensions added in Firefox. I even went through what I had set for Chrome to make sure I didn’t miss anything and as far as I can tell, everything is exactly the same for both. But for some reason in Firefox, I can’t see the blog names or icons of any reblogs. Like, I can see who on my dash reblogged it, but I can’t see the original poster or who any of the comments were added by. Has anyone else encountered this issue? Does anyone know of an XKit feature that would fix this that I am maybe missing? Or maybe some other solution to troubleshoot this?
I really want to stick with using Firefox as my default browser, but I also want to still enjoy my Tumblr experience.

Okay, but what if next episode we get Buck spending so much time with Eddie and Christopher after all that just happened? And that’s what does BT in? Like she gets mad at Buck about it, because he’s telling her he wants to make it work, but then he’s never there now. And Buck finally realizes that nothing about this relationship has been good for him and does the breaking up himself. And then goes back to his Diaz boys, because they need him.
This episode was so much. 😭

My #1 post of 2022
Fuck yes! AP has called the race here in Kansas for the vote on our abortion rights. And a resounding 400K voters told the anti-abortion fuckers to fuck off. I have never been more proud to be from Kansas. We still have a lot of fucked up shit happening here, but this victory feels good.

So that was, 1) on Firefox, 2) in a container tab, 3) with a solid handful of adblockers an privacy extensions, so I know that wasn't full blast. That was the properly contained and quarantined version of Facebook and- 😒
I started a mastodon account a while back and never used it, but if we're all building lifeboats I'll make that thing float. Evidently you can follow WordPress blogs from mastodon, so we'll see how that goes. I also jumped on the waiting list for bluesky.
But I don't want to leave. Honestly, if I was to forecast this, I imagine that everyone is building themselves back up at the moment but it's less than likely that we're going to migrate and actually use them. As the site degrades with less people to fix things, some people, maybe new users, will be driven away. But the term Hellsite did not actually arise from the bitchiness of the community on this site. The core user base of Tumblr has a tolerance for bad web design on par with anaerobic bacteria in a hydrothermal vent. And I can see us boot strapping this site into something usable for another decade.
As long as the Powers That Be think they can sell this site to recover losses rather than just pulling the plug, tumblr is going to persist.
Still, it's good to have a lifeboat, even if we are riding this ship down to the abyss. An emergency escape submarine. I imagine on that distant day when Tumblr does actually go down for the last time, The Internet at large will be hit with a sudden influx of freaks when we are finally forced to switch to our backup accounts. And there will be a great outpouring of grief, A collective mourning for Tumblr and remembrance of the glory days. To which the response will be "what do you mean Tumblr died yesterday? I thought it went out along with use of the word hipster".
And more than likely someone will try to put together "Zumblr, the new tumblr" and it will fall so utterly short and require your full name and location tracking and it will be primarily video based. And then they'll be confused when we shun it and it flops.
Tumblr has been making jokes about how the site will eventually shut down for years. I've seen commentary pretty much daily, that we'll ride this train till the very last stop and then rot into the dirt before we go to any other site. Maybe the social butterflies among us would take up pigeon keeping or smoke signals, but the modern web has become hostile to human life and wading into the morass of enshittification just isn't worth it.
But now that last stop is on the distant horizon. And it would seem we're not ready to rot just yet.

I have
new computer
and there is so, so, so much I need to migrate and reinstall and re-set-up and
I was hoping to switch to firefox with this, finally
but I’m so overwhelmed I just resigned to stick with chrome again. for convenience. for accessibility.
and even that has pitfalls.
plug-ins and settings that are still local, user-end.
and I’ve just been slowly cobbling together my tech space for over a fucking decade (2009 to 2021!) so now I’m in this fresh new computer environment and I
I don’t even know where to start putting things back together?
I keep running into something as dumb as videos auto-playing on my tumblr dash now, and it’s stressing me the fuck out, and I can’t find out how I disabled it before.
I checked my account settings, I checked my plug-ins, I checked my xkit (which is one of those user-end things, I found out, and I do NOT remember fully what I was using any more!) and I couldn’t find anything that would fix it.
but I’m also trying to like. Preserve a bunch of programs that I’d meticulously curated user settings for over the years. Photoshop and OBS, especially. Trying to figure out how to keep save files and shit.
There’s so much.
And this is neutral - this is not bad! This is neutral stress!
But I’m under so much bad stress all the time, my body doesn’t differentiate any more. I start getting the chest-crushing-in-on-itself, heart-working-overtime, lungs-acheing-to-keep-breathing anxiety pains if I get stuck on any one thing too long.
I hate that I’ve ended up like this.
I used to be able to procedurally tackle this kind of thing.
But I’ve also never had 11 years of structure to rebuild before. I didn’t used to have anxiety hardly at all before. Well, not like this. I suspect I had it as a coping tool for adhd, and it only truly dove past the breaking point in the past 5 or so years.
I’m supposed to move. I need to move. There are only 2 places I actually want to move, and both are actually impossible. One of them would make me so happy. I can’t stop thinking about it. Even though it’s unhealthy, and I know it. The single most potent taste of happiness I’ve experienced in the last decade, without question - maybe even in all my life. How can I not think about it? How can I not want it?
I’m almost caught up on Critical Role, finally. As long as I don’t crash and burn today from my ongoing insurance research and stress, and now the computer re-establishment stuff... I should finally be able to catch it live after almost a month of missing broadcasts.
I talked to my mom about trying CBD for my anxiety problems. It’s not legal here, really. But she was supportive. She mentioned that there’s a local reservation shop that opened recently that might have some options. So I might go with her some day to investigate that. A friend has volunteered to try to set me up with a disposable vape to try out, too. I’m hopeful. I’m a bit scared, but I’m hopeful. I really need help with how bad it’s gotten.
I want to type so much more, but I’m really scatterbrained right now. I feel like I should have slept more, but I wasn’t tired enough to make that happen, so I’m at an impasse with myself.
And I have to do sister pick-up today.

(Ok so I was a fool and had had a lot of this meta written up yesterday and instead of saving it as a draft while I watched critical role, I, like a fool, just left all the tabs open and then went to bed after the episode. Then firefox crashed in the night and everything was lost. Press F to pay respects I guess cause here I go again.)
First off, Aradia is best girl and I am so happy she's RELEVANT again. I had a whole preamble the last time I wrote this post, but I can't remember what it said other than mentioning that this is gonna be a long post beneath the cut and that I have other metas that will kind of overlap with what I'm saying in this one so I will try to keep my discussion of the narrative styles of the The Prince and The Muse to only what is relevant to this post and to what is RELEVANT. Also previous metas should be reblogged directly before I post this to make it easier to check them out before hand or to reference them more easily.
The main points of focus will be: The differences between how the two Time gods interact with The Muse and her narrative, as well as the general level of metatextual awareness of characters within Candy. | The juxtaposition of the Knight and the Maid. | The possible suppression of the Ultimate nature of The Knight, and by extension The Seer. | The Muse's unique state of power and presumed Awakening | I swear there was more but I flat out don't remember what they were.
One last thing. I am a rambly motherfucker so if you haven't read my previous metas, here's your warning to expect a very long and very chaotic mess of a post beneath the cut. Also for anyone confused anytime I emphasize someone as 'The Class' it's referring to their actions as a potential narrator and as an Ultimate Self. For example, the difference between The Muse and the Muse is that 'the Muse' would be for character moments like when the dead cherub possessing Jade's corpse in Candy is just talking with Davebot and Aradia, while 'The Muse' is for when talking about her influence over the narrative. (There's a lot of different ways I put emphasis on words or phrases, but “The Class” was the one I felt really might need clarification)
I find it interesting how Davebot acknowledges and shows distaste for The Muse interjecting her narration and thus inhibiting his ability to live in the moment. I find this interesting because as an Awakened god of Time, he is simultaneously living in every moment but as a Knight, and as The Knight, he is also intrinsically separate from those moments as he is the Ultimate One who Wields Time. Aradia on the other hand is the Maid of Time, who while almost assuredly having reached the pinnacle of her god tier after the hundreds of years we now know her to have lived, is not ascended to her Ultimate Self. As a Maid, Aradia literally embodies her aspect. As such she doesn't worry about living in the moment because she is the moment. Because of this Aradia is more prone to just accept, agree, and repeat the sentiments The Muse dictates in her constant exposition. However, despite acknowledging the narration, Davebot still ends up being incredibly passive in the face of it. Even though he has an Active class and is a dreamer of the Active moon, Dave himself has always come off as an incredibly passive character to me in a lot of ways. (Even the aspect of Time itself and its heroes are specifically denoted as incredibly Active in the {official and Canon} extended zodiac test [which means its contents are NECESSARY, RELEVANT, and TRUE]). Always acting under the direction of other characters, subject to The Lord's rule over Time, and constantly struggling with his seeming lack of control. Here, even after reaching his Ultimate Self, he still only makes passive-aggressive remarks instead leaving the flow of the story and the big decisions to others. (In my last post I went into deeper detail about the nature of, and relationship between Aradia and Dave's classes and how that affected their sessions, but I can't remember what the tie in was unfortunately so for now I'll leave it at this and move on)
Among the human players of sburb, the Strilondes have always been the most genre savvy and possessed the most awareness of the narrative and its' influence, (although Dave was never near the levels of Dirk and Rose). But up until this upd8, direct interactions with the narrative have been few and far between in Candy (at least as far as I can recall). I mentioned this in my previous meta as being a result of The Muse being the type to inspire characters to action whereas The Prince is far more heavy handed in is dictation and rarely attempts to hide his presence in the narration these days. But we see here once again, that not only is The Muse bad for the people under her influence, she's also just really not good at constructing a story. She relies too heavily on tropes and cliches, on plot contrivances; she tells too much and doesn't show enough, (something that should literally be her greatest strength as a Muse). Yet despite this, Davebot and Aradia are seen multiple times to interact with her dictations directly and Aradia even points out on page 284 that she is aware of The Muse “observing (their) every action and noting its relevance : )” (the emphasis on 'relevance' being mine). As such we can infer that it doesn't take an Ultimate Self to recognize The Muse's narration. But if not that, then what? If it was just pre-disposition of character that let them notice, then between her own abilities and self awareness, surely Candy!Rose would have by now, but she hasn't. Then is it proximity? Maybe The Muse is getting complacent and starting to unknowingly imitate The Prince and his methods? Or is it because both Davebot and Aradia are Heroes of Time? The aspect opposite The Muse's. After all, The Muse did express that the way (either Aradia specifically or that the both of them) experience time is “woefully unfamiliar” to her. Perhaps that makes it difficult for her to write a story that resonates with them fully. Whatever it may be, all the information up until this point doesn't come to a head so much as it is something that I believe to be RELEVANT.
With that, let us switch gears while keeping the previous information in mind. As I said before, in spite of all the active components of Davebot's Mythological Role, his character has often been passive. And the precise story beat I want to focus on right now is his Awakening to his Ultimate Self. Candy!Dave was out on patrol with a wife who he loved, but who also had very much always been the driving force of their dynamic. He was pulled to the ancient bunker by the narrative where a hologram of Obama expertly guided him through a conversation like a true politician, somehow knowing a lot about Dave while at the same time withholding “classified” information as if that word had any meaning without a country or government holding Obama accountable. (Unless of course Obama was still answering to someone... *Cough cough*the authors*cough cough*). Look, all of this is me saying that Obama was a leftover contrivance of The Prince that The Muse utilized for her own means. Dirk was a skilled programmer and engineer. He had a deep understanding of how to build AIs that could easily impersonate someone. He had an even deeper grasp of how to manipulate Dave. Dirk built the bots. The Bots. The bots that are supposedly NECESSARY for one to Awaken to their Ultimate Self and survive. And yet even if that is TRUE, it isn't true. The Prince claims he was a special case but his powers are of the soul, not the body. And it is the body that breaks down. And we know that Rose really was suffering in her path to Awakening, but I will remind you that her poor condition was first established through narration that we know was under the control of The Prince. Further more it happened prior to the Meat/Candy split, in which the Canon still possessed TRUTH, which is why it still remained RELEVANT in Candy (and it was obviously NECESSARY in Meat for reasons about to be discussed). Both Rose and Dave ultimately played a passive role in their Awakenings, guided to their Ultimate Self by another even though they are both Active players. I believe that The Prince established these rules about Ultimate Selves and built the robot bodies as a way to give him an upper hand against the two characters most likely to overtake him. Because to reinforce a point from a previous post, Rose is the only full on published author among the players and Dave himself has written comics and presumably screenplays for his films, making them the two people who might not only do a better job than The Prince or The Muse, but just do a flat out GOOD job. The Seer especially, which is why The Prince went through the extra effort to disrupt her sense of self as she was coming into her Ultimate Self. If these two had played an Active part in their own Awakening and without The Prince’s influence I think they both would’ve been quite capable of giving The Prince a run for his money. But the humans are not the only players in this game...
As I've already alluded to, Lord English (The Lord), was almost certainly his Ultimate Self. Awakened and Empowered by the treasure (a juju so powerful that it enabled John to retcon things in a way that overrides the timeline instead of splitting it, and it did so without even granting him its actual power). When The Knight awakened, The Muse described it has having all of Time flow through his consciousness, allowing him to experience every instance of his own self. Conversely Jade described that her Ultimate Self would be “like... one ultimate self distributed across multiple bodies. so in multiple places and states at once. every jade that exists is like a light being shined through a thousand cracks in the timeline.” (Hey remember those cracks in the universe that had light peaking through them? Idk, seems RELEVANT if you ask me.) So if we reasonably assume that ones aspect heavily affects how one's Ultimate Self first Awakens and how it operates than that means there will be similarities between those who share aspects. If Awakening for a Hero of Time is an experience of everything that ever has, is, or will happen to a version of themselves, and Lord English possessed a juju that allows one to retcon and not split, than the combination of those powers would make it so he could be the singular instance of himself while at the same time always be “Already Here” than there is truly no difference between Lord English and the theoretical Ultimate version of himself. And since the Muse consumed Lord English at the end of Candy, granting her the power to punch a wormhole in the black hole. This is also presumably where she gained the power to “...exist in several narrative structures at once” (pg 286) (also see the above explanation of Jade's Ultimate Self for why that is RELEVANT). Because of this, we can assume that The Muse is just as indistinguishable from her theoretical Ultimate Self as The Lord was. But these powers and this simultaneous existence is not without consequences because the Muse's collapse at the end of this chapter is almost assuredly a result of Meat!Jade's rebelling against The Muse in chapter 6 (specifically the action on page 167/168). And finally, to tie this back to the imposition of bodily destruction to those who Awaken their Ultimate Self, it is worth noting that The Muse does not possess a body of her own to be destroyed. Instead inhabiting the body of various Jades.
Alright, so once again sorry if you thought there would be some big culmination to this post, and hey, what pumpkin?

HTTP response status codes indicate whether a specific HTTP request has been successfully finished
HTTP reaction status codes reveal no matter whether a certain HTTP request is successfully accomplished. Replies are grouped in five courses:

It truly is intended for situations in which A further treatment or host handles the request, or for batch processing. 203 Non-Authoritative Info This response code suggests the returned meta-facts is not really particularly the same as is obtainable from the supply server, but is gathered from the neighborhood or maybe a 3rd party backup. The request may be resubmitted right after lessening the dimension from the request header fields. 451 Unavailable For Legal ReasonsThe person-agent requested a resource which often can't lawfully be furnished, including an internet site censored by a federal government.
Server error responses
500 Internal Server ErrorThe server has encountered a situation it isn't going to learn how to tackle. 501 Not ImplementedThe petition technique isn't supported with the server and are unable to be handled. The one procedures that servers are required to persuade (and as a result that should not return this code) are GET and HEAD. 502 Bad GatewayThis mistake reaction means that the server, when employed as a gateway to have a reaction necessary to manage the ask for, obtained an invalid reaction. 503 Service UnavailableThe machine is just not ready to contend with the request. Regular leads to really are a host that is definitely down for routine maintenance or that is certainly overloaded. I never used to pay attention to the follower count. In fact I used to use Chrome and it had an add-on that blanked it out. It was annoying because it changed all the time. When I switched to Firefox I no longer had that capability. So I had to stare at the pesky little number as it scrolled up and down depending on whether people liked what I posted.
Now this may not even be true. It could be a complete coincidence but if I post an article about a bad experience I had a Taco Bell in 1988 and two people unfollow I just assume that two people disagreed with my opinion on Taco Bell.
Absurd I know. It’s ego. Yet. It has begun to drive me. People like blue flowers. Yes. Blue flowers sell! Soon this will be the blue flowers channel! No more of this boring Buddha talk blue flowers 24/7!

i present to you, another f***ing sanders sides swap au cuz there can never be enough of them
i'm gonna call this corruptive switch cuz the dark sides are arguably worse than in canon
Patton is Dark!Creativity
also known as Intrusive Thoughts
Aside from the usual I.T. things, he seems to suggest a lot of good things but with bad intentions, which slowly turn into completely bad things
"You should offer to house-sit for them, that way you can take the opportunity to steal and use their house for parties! Oh, or even better, steal from them!"
instead of The Duke, he is The Painter(no dukey-esque jokes, sorry)
his Dark Side animal theme is the Fear Mongrel(disguised as a cat. look up what the fear mongrel is)
makes alot of crafts that are either made of gross things or resemble gross things
i chose the fear mongrel because it poison's peoples minds and it has no set form so i can do whatever with patton's animal traits
Constantly stealing things from the other sides
Roman: Patton, why do you have my cloak?! I need it back!
Patton, wrapped in the cloak like a burrito: No.
Logan is Light!Creativity
also known as Logical Creativity
Everything he comes up with has reasoning behind it
"Just because a Manticore and a Chimera are already combinations of other animals doesn't mean they can't be combined; That just makes it a more powerful & threatening enemy to fight! So many more animal parts to contribute to the danger!"
instead of The Prince, he is The Author
doesn't always wear his coat
has a dislike for "cartoon logic", unless that logic actually has a good explanation
does not hate the laws of fiction, as long as he can see it as a possible irl event
sneaks memes into his writing
Roman is Anxiety
also known as Uncontrollable Anxiety
All the anxiety he gives Thomas is based off of wildly improbable ideas, and Thomas can picture the scenarios too(not just hear Roman say them)
"But Thomas, if you go to this party with your friends, your DD might get drunk and still try to drive you home, and you could either end up arrested or in a car crash! And probably die afterwards!
his Dark Side animal theme is a Nian(look it up)
due to the Nian's hatred of the color red he hides from all mirrors and reflective surfaces
only Ethan can combat his abilities
likes to get up close to people when spreading his anxious thoughts
hyper, like, all the time
i chose the Nian because it's pretty creepy to me and it's immortal(comparable to how difficult it can be to get rid of deep-set fears) and people fear it and what it can do(of course)
dark circles around his eyes cuz ironically he keeps himself awake at night with his fears
meme king
Virgil is Deceit
also known as Manipulative Self-Preservation
Makes things sound scarier than they actually are, solely to get Thomas to stay on track with his life
"If you tell him why you ducked out of the project, he may never ask you to partner up with him again; which will inevitably lead to him never talking to you at all, forever!"
his Dark Side animal theme is a Firefox
Unlike Canon Deceit, he does not care for Thomas' mental health
anti-villain. thinks he's doing good but he's just flat out evil
only reason I chose a firefox is because i wanted him to have something on his face, so i chose burns and scars, which brought me to the firefox, and foxes are cunning, stealthy manipulators
likes to sing villain/dark songs, to Ethan's dismay
Deceit is Logic
also known as Self-Protecting Logic
name in this AU is Ethan, just to prevent confusion with Virgil
Will do whatever it takes to keep Thomas safe. Will only resort to whatever is circumstantially necessary.
"I know you don't like the sound of it Thomas, but doing this will lead to the safest result. You could ruin this friendship otherwise."
glasses are actually just empty frames
cares way more about thomas's mental health than Canon Logic, CS!Logan, Canon Deceit and CS!Virgil combined
instead of scales, he has scars that look like vitiligo. he gets more of these spots as thomas goes through more and more things that negatively effects his mental health. they don't hurt Ethan physically, but they're constant reminders of his failures
only looks at memes that don't encourage negative feelings
huge freaking emphasis on positivity like ffs dude chill out
Remus is Morality
also known as Moral Ambivalence
Does the right thing but his morals are, quite obviously, a bit misguided
"Stabbing isn't wrong if they consent to it! He said he wanted to be stabbed!"
please don't let him near strong-heat-producing objects... like stoves... Virgil convinced him they're ok to touch
admires Patton's works but will never admit it to him. also admires Logan's but will admit it, and even give him some inspiration
likes to pretend to be a detective for some reason
yes, he still has his mustache, his dark circles(?) around his eyes are there too, but they're not as noticeable tho.
does not get memes
There are minor differences to the episodes that still keep a roughly similar plotline,, these are what i could think of
Like in The Dark Side of Disney, they're talking about Pixar movies in specific(Cuz Logan would be a firm believer in the Pixar Theory due to how interesting and plausible it is) and Roman's always suggesting sh** like "Wall-e killed all the other robots cleaning up earth" and "Toys can die and their owners wouldn't know they'd just be playing with a dead corpse" and Logan's like "cAN YOU NOT" the entire time cuz he knows it's probable and he hates it
In Can Lying Be Good? Virgil pretends to be Logic instead of Morality, because he can't keep up with Remus's energy and his points will make more sense coming from Ethan's mouth... or so he thinks. yeah by the end he's exposed. Ethan was tied up in a closet the entire time.
In Learning New Things About Ourselves, Ethan isn't the one against the puppet shenanigans like you would suspect, it's Logan... again. Since he's Logical Creativity he doesn't see how playing around with puppets and singing songs will fix Thomas's problem. It's still illogical.
In Selfishness vs. Selflessness, Virgil has(more or less) the same goal as Deceit does in canon(to get Thomas to realize he's not a perfectly good person) except instead of doing it in a regular courtroom, he does it in a nightmarish one in Patton's part of the imagination(who is in the background, manipulating the room during the trial)
just some other facts
Thomas is only a complete wreck when his dark sides are kept out of check(my writer abilities have peaked. i made a rhyme unintentionally.)
out of the dark sides, not even anxiety is TRULY "accepted" in this au. the dark sides are just tolerated. the only reason they're allowed to exist and interact with thomas like the light sides is because Ethan realizes how important they are and enforces a rule preventing them from being banned
speaking of which, the darks and lights do interact like normal friends but that doesn't mean they're happy with their opposite's roles
Somebody: You and Logan have a good brotherly relationship, right Patton?
Patton: Absolutely not. He is a sworn enemy to Thomas's well being.
Somebody: But I saw you two geeking out over something earli-
Patton: I would sell him to satan for one corn chip. I don't even like corn chips.
dark sides are based on fictional animals/monsters instead of real animals
everyone keeps their little quirks(Logan likes crofters, Patton likes cats, etc.) unless they are tied to their canon role(Deceit's emphasis on the letter "s" when speaking, Roman caring about his appearance, etc.)
don't let the dark sides combine their powers, ever. that's when they're truely strong
Roman and Remus are no longer brothers, it's Patton and Logan instead
yeahh that's all i've got. i'm working on character refs now, in fact right after this post goes up i'm posting logan's. here's hoping people like this concept hdgdjdhds

The different approach would probably be, I don’t know, sabotage and killing people? I honestly don’t know what you want people to do, like really, honestly. If we’re already fucked, if the surveillance state is as scary as you’re describing, if all our systems are useless to deal with it (you’re an anarchist, I presume you believe this), what’s left to do? And what’s the point of doing anything if the technology that, like, I absolutely rely on to live is so toxic?
The different approach is to organize.
Organize, organize, organize.
We have been trying to foist the responsibility for evading surveillance onto individuals and that’s bullshit. Your grandma who wants to see baby pictures shouldn’t have to learn how to strip metadata or read a 10K word ToS and argue with it in order to function online.
We are fucked as individuals, we can’t fight this as individuals. It’s a good thing that we don’t have to.
Google and Amazon employees have protested when their employers started working with facial recognition software, corporate and government whistleblowers have told the public when we’re being watched. You might not be able to do those things but you can support the people who HAVE done those sorts of things. You can also work to educate people about the state of modern surveillance and try to get them to pay attention to legislation that they might otherwise overlook.
There is an entire organization (https://www.eff.org/) that exists exclusively to protect online freedoms; if nothing else you can donate to them (because what EFF is doing is working a HELL of a lot better than telling people not to post selfies.
And I don’t know why people always jump to “well so what, killing people is the answer?” when you’ve got “sabotage” right there in your sentence. Yes. 100%. Sabotage the shit out of this system. Spraypaint cameras, point cameras out to people around you, print up sheets of hyperface and wheatpaste it up in high traffic areas.
So much of this shit is blamed on individual people for creating accounts to share news with their family or posting photos on vacation and making individual people feel guilty for being complicit in modern surveillance. Most people don’t even realize that this is a thing. Most people aren’t worried about facial recognition software and the vast files of data being compiled about them because it’s not an immediate problem and I sure as hell can’t blame someone who’s struggling to make rent for not giving a shit about where their face is seen. Our exhaustion leads to apathy and that apathy is being taken advantage of by governments and massive corporations in order to build up a system that does not yet control everyone but easily could in the future.
You can’t kill the apathy. You can’t make a person who says “I’m not important to worry about this, it’ll never impact me” care enough to delete her facebook. So don’t go after her. Find people who DO care and go after facebook. Be shitty and criminal about it and hack it. Be polite and legal about it and agitate for oversight (and not in Zuckerberg’s shitty “we shouldn’t have to be responsible for our platforms, the government should be responsible for preventing bad shit on our platforms while we maintain control of data sales” way).
I brought up David Brin and sousveillance yesterday, that’s a part of this too. The public should have access to police camera footage and since they won’t give it to us we should set up some fucking cameras of our own. You know why we’ve affirmed the right of citizens to film police? BECAUSE PEOPLE FUCKING ORGANIZED. Here, have a state-by-state selection of apps to record the cops: https://www.aclu.org/issues/criminal-law-reform/reforming-police-practices/aclu-apps-record-police-conduct
-----------------------------------------------
So what can you, as an individual, do if you want to step back and get away from some of this but you aren’t quite ready to start slapping stickers on security cameras?
First, detach as much as possible from the toxic aspects of technology as you can.
I’m pretty clearly a big advocate for open source software and surveillance is part of that. Apple tracks your shit. Microsoft tracks your shit Linux doesn’t. Google tracks your shit. Firefox doesn’t. Yahoo tracks your shit. Protonmail doesn’t. Install adblockers, browse incognito, and see how well you do without certain kinds of social media.
I get it, I had to create a facebook page for a job and now I have to keep one for another job and it sucks because you’re forced to participate in order to just be allowed to survive. Participate at the lowest level you can.
(Real talk: I am *floored* that Chrome is a thing. I understand that gmail got off the ground before we all realized how nuts google was and that almost everyone has a youtube account but it is balls to the wall *bonkers* to me that people would use a google browser)
Start running a good adblocker (I like ublock origin) and NoScript. It’ll really narrow your online experience to do so, but it might also make you aware of just how much bullshit is quietly going on in the background of the pages you visit.
Second, become unpredictable.
I wasn’t kidding about randomly leaving your phone at home or at the office. You probably don’t need it with you all the time so don’t take it all the time.
Change the way you get to work, change where you go to eat, change where you shop. Routine is comforting, it’s also a trap. (And if it’s at all feasible cut yourself off from Amazon; don’t shop there, don’t interact with it, don’t use alexa, don’t use their storage products, don’t sell through it. I know it’s really difficult, and if you can’t do all of that try to do the most you can)
It’s easy to observe and build profiles on people who have habits set in stone and a particular path they follow each day. It’ll be good for you to shake yourself out of those habits not only because it blurs the edges of your profile but also because novel experiences are good for your brain. And if you can’t change your commute or leave your phone at home at least vary your behaviors. If you go on tumblr every day start taking a day off once in a while. If you play mobile games on your phone most days maybe switch to an ereader for a bit.
One of my friends once said “your credit card company should always have to call you to check for fraud because they should never know what you’re going to buy next” and honestly I like that philosophy (this came up after he purchased a box of communion wafers and a boat oar about an hour apart). Shop like you’re trying to confuse the fraud department, drive like you’re trying to lose a tail.
Look for alternatives to the things you do every day and start doing the alternative thing once in a while for the sheer novelty of it.
--------------------------------------
Nihilism
The system is broken. The system is broken. It is broken and it can’t be fixed, we let it go too long and by the time we even thought about trying to control this shit it was so far gone that we couldn’t walk away. It’s all well and good to talk about avoiding cameras but people gotta use roads and ride busses and take the subway. People gotta eat. People gotta go to school. It’s all well and good to talk about disrupting data patterns and checking out of social media but you’re still gonna get googled and your name is out there. The cat’s out of the bag.
That is not an excuse to throw up your hands and say “well I guess there’s nothing that can be done,” it’s a reason to say “there’s no reason things should be like this.”
People talk about surveillance and technology and security like they’re set in stone, like they’re forces of nature and can never be changed.
That’s fuckin bullshit. We make this. WE MAKE THIS. And we can change this. We can change it collectively by putting pressure on companies like facebook or amazon or google by agitating for oversight, sabotaging them, or leaking documents. We can change it collectively by making alternative options and participating in open source projects. We can change it collectively by leaking data and supporting leakers. We can change it collectively by filming cops. We can change it collectively by pushing toward norms of privacy, by moving away from always-on, always-reachable culture.
And it’s always going to be a fight. There’s never going to be an end-state in which there *isn’t* someone trying to take advantage of the structures we’ve built. But together we can keep pushing anyway. One must imagine Sisyphus happy, after all.
