I understand why people are so protective of this movie, but it has been so bizarre to see women have valid critics on it and about how the Barbie movie wasn’t the deep feminist introspection people seem to think it is, and then being equated to actual misogynists. What in the centrist both sides bullshit is that???

I really enjoyed this movie because it was fun and I thought the messaging was heartfelt if not super deep, but we cannot ignore valid critiques of this movie. It’s surface level feminism and corporate propaganda, and it’s fun and emotional. All of these things can be true at the same!

I find the fact that the Barbie movie is simultaneously being criticized by the right as “too radical”, and criticized by the left as “too nice to men” and/or “too pandering”, quite funny, given that America’s WHOLE SPEECH was about how, no matter what women (like the director of the Barbie movie) do, it will simultaneously always be too little and too much.

comics as an art form make me insane. they’re so difficult to do well. there’s so many different ways to make sequential art work and most of them are deeply unintuitive. onomatopoeia that feels completely ridiculous to put down often reads seamlessly. panels on a page become a fractally nested image composition challenge that’s only possible to lose because if you do a good job no one will notice. you have to direct the readers’ eyes on a specific path across the page but also account for the fact that they won’t follow it. comic time isn’t linear. if the order of events isn’t crystal clear the story becomes incomprehensible. sometimes you need to do this on purpose. all this for a medium almost universally considered less effective than animation and less respectable than plain text. even its own name doesn’t take it seriously
