The front door of Bag End in my webcomic adaptation of The Hobbit, as seen in Chapter 1 vs Chapter 18 :). It turns out your art style changes a lot when you draw a webcomic. (I love painting Ghibli-inspired backgrounds!)
Chapter 18 hasn’t been posted publicly yet, but you can view the first several pages (along with other art) on my Patreon.

The thing I like about my writing is that I never write a story the same way twice. Everything I write demands a different flow.
For example, of the two stories I'm writing now, one wanted present tense (which I am, it turns out, terrible at) and lots of Internet slang/grammar, and the other one decided it had to be made of very short snippets, with one or two longer scenes forming naturally and lots of run on sentences. Both of them I originally tried in my 'more typical' style and both times it failed miserably to click until I scrapped it entirely and restarted.
Ironically enough, the present tense one I'd been intending to write in more episodic bursts, and the snippets one is the start of a long and twisting story delving into deeper themes than I ever have before. But that's the way they wanted to be written! It's more thinking on my behalf than I might have wanted (I am truly fighting my instinct for past tense), but in return I'm finding a rhythm and pattern that's working so well!
I guess the morale of the story is that if you've just started a story or art piece or whatever but it's just not working out, try approaching it from an unusual angle, something you haven't tried before. Something about it isn't clicking, so try a new method entirely!
But most importantly, have a folder somewhere you can move all the little bits and pieces you made but had to take out. It's old advice, but the problem is usually further back than you think. Doesn't mean you have to lose your progress.
#writing#creative writing#fanfic#fanfiction#They're both crossovers of course. I do love crossovers. Reincarnation crossovers especially.#The present tense is mimicking the style of a comedy anime that doesn't really have much of a plot. It's very enjoyable. (it's saiki k)#The protag is a comedically op psychic in normal highschool. He gets into shenanigans his powers exacerbate and hates flirting#The whole show is his dry narration and I'm carrying that into my fic because it's a great fit for Sqq (svsss) and it'll spiral massively#With barely any intervention from me. Just slice of life fluff and flowers and Sqq trying to be a good teacher for his kids#The other is bloodborne and I've already killed wwx a bunch of times. He's very traumatised. He baby too. HIS narration is run on sentences#Because I've found it strikes a good balance between 'appropriately conveying gothic horror' and 'terrified 5yo pov'#And the short sections means I can run through a bunch of minor but important scenes without sacrificing pace and#It lets the world building happen more naturally as wwx learns about his circumstances#That and it balances the run on sentences because there are many and they are long#I can't wait to get back to my computer. I've MISSED writing but it just hasn't been the year for it

"The world isn't a safe place, so get used to it!"
Man, as somebody who's survived multiple, long-lasting instances of abuse from a very young age, I was under the impression that the world was, indeed, so safe and conforming to my desires. I'm practically stunned to learn that this is not the case, and I have been severely humbled
(Sarcasm fully intended)
#mental health#mental health advocacy#abuse apologia#trauma#abuse tw#abuse mention tw#if your response to somebody talking about trauma is to go 'the world isn't safe!' that is a reflection on you; not the world#and if the world isn't safe because of human action: we can change our behaviour#not only is this abuse apologia but it is also kind of... lazy#and i *hate* the word 'lazy' but it's simply the only word i have to convey how asinine the whole 'get used to it!!!' is#if living in the world is to be used to abuse and some of the worst shit imaginable then. i don't think that's right. or normal.#again like... i actually truly just fucking despise the way most people talk about trauma and abuse...#...and pretty much anything that isn't like the bare surface-level 'mental health is important!' type deal...#...because it has always cpme down to 'how can i help maintain the status quo (people being abused and tormented)?'#or 'well you were [x] so you deserved it!' or 'you shouldn't want for ANYTHING if it makes me sad/annoyed/frustrated!!'#but maybe i'm naïve but i know this shit can change#and i don't think silence and letting people go about believing that shit is how it'll be done

its kind of funny that ppl are talking like Literally Everyone is Actually saying or implying they would rather have the ice king than simon that. seems like an exaggeration. the only people who say anything of the sort are astrid, who wasn’t even born yet while simon was still ice king and just thinks of him as “cool wizard” and “wrote some fun books”, and fionna & cake, who have seen approximately 10 seconds of ice king in a moment where he’s not doing particularly bad, and who have only interacted with simon at literally the lowest point of his entire life so far. what finn & tv say in ep2 reads as them hearing the conversation and assuming its more along the lines of “simon being embarrassed by work he thinks is bad” than “simon trying to avoid this thing because it is associated with a traumatic part of his life”. and prismo is just like. a little peeved that he can’t access or control his own creation anymore. Like, the Points people are generally trying to make when they bring this up are not without merit, and you could say that’s the message simon got from the last couple of days but. unless i forgot something there is absolutely 0 indication of any person who met ice king saying anything that remotely actually implies they enjoyed having ice king around more than simon. we just have a handful of people saying they happen to like One Thing ice king did. the people of ooo did not undergo a wave of selective amnesia about the ice king
#generally like…#YES the specific moments the writers have chosen to show us ARE conveying something greater than just. These Events Happened#but theyre also not supposed to be representative of… ‘this is the whole of this character now’ or ‘this is what things are like ALWAYS’#if Every Single Day of simons life was just like this he probably would have been pulling his magic portal bullshit a lot sooner#we saw finn for like 10-15 minutes mostly in the context of him trying to help someone with a MAJOR emotional problem#we didn’t see the literal entirety of his life and who he is now from every angle#and the only people who even bring up f&c unprompted are astrid and dirt beer guy#not because literally everyone suddenly became completely obsessed with the f&c stories after CAWM#but because it’s…… an important part of setting up the plot#It’s AT man. The world exists and moves even when we don’t see it.#The stuff they’re showing us is important but it’s not meant to say that all of this#is all there is to anyone and this small span of time in ooo is what it’s always like forever constantly.#basilposting#atposting

i wanna talk about like how the very nature of theatre is destructive and theatre of revolution and how some of the most important and influential periods in theatre history happened at times when people on the fringes of society were completely deconstructing and reconstructing the world and cultural canon and how it’s supposed to be uncomfortable and unfamiliar and how change is the entire point not just of the world but to change the audience
but i fear i don’t have the ability to put my thoughts into anything nearly comprehensible. so. support local theatre. support indigenous theatre. support radical fucking theatre.
#i could talk for hours#about the like first circumnavigation of africa and how that spawned a new era of theatre in europe#all the plays from the ancient graeco-roman’s? war. violence. destruction. what was happening in the world?#what’s happening in the world now?#it’s all so important and i have so many thoughts and 0 way ti convey them in a way that feels Right#theatre#theater#theater history#activism#theatre of revolution#theatre of destruction#tragedy#artistotle#revolution#rebellion#the tearing down of everything you know is the point#if it makes you uncomfortable they accomplished their goal#you’re supposed to leave changed#a different person#having experienced something only the people in the room with you at the time experienced#nobody else will ever feel that again#that’s. the. fucking. point.#rant#art#art history

i think overall accessibility of information is so incredibly important as well and having that barrier to entry i think can be really dangerous actually
#i talked about scientific publications and i do think that information as well v much needs to be conveyed to people#in a way that is easily understandable and accessible for anyone it's important to understand the world around you#and in my field understand your own health#i think there's a balance to be had and a need to understand your audience#i just social sciences and literature based topics#liberal arts is the better term this is what i was trying to get at#those are so innately tied to the subjective human experience i don't feel there is any need to 'raise the bar' you know#in terms of communication to that degree#naming experiences and topics is important and again this is v biased#but i think there's a common excess to that and i just#oh i loathe it#txt#*avoiding reading their papers*#sigh...

I love legends arceus so much but every time I play it I am struck with how little they designed irida in comparison to adaman and I get unhappy about it
#mousetalk#adaman has so much going on visually he looks like he fits into the world around him & the role he has in the narrative#but iridas outfit does nothing to convey how important she is! i dont like how they designed her at allllll which is terrible because shes#my favorite of the two :(#this is probably just a me issue but still im very sorry irida you deserve cooler stuff

dia saying smart things that lead to groundbreaking revelations and then immediately forgetting about it...just like me fr
#pokespe liveblog#also another important bit of information told via a truncated flashback#i complained earlier but actually on a thematic level you can see this as a disruption of information presentation ie distortion stuff#as we approach giratina and the distortion world even the narrative itself struggles to reliably convey facts#memoryholes and storyholes and slippages in pacing it all fits together

image 1: a screenshot of a wikipedia page section titled "Relationship with Dorothy" which reads "Ozma spent ten years as a boy and then became a girl. When she met Dorothy she immediately loved Oz's greatest heroine and the two became very good friends. By the sixth book Ozma arranges, at Dorothy's request, for Dorothy and her family to move into the palace where the two spend a lot of time walking hand in hand in the garden and when Dorothy brings her cousin and the Wizard back to Oz with her in one book, the two disappear for a time together, leaving their guests to fend for themselves. In The Lost Princess of Oz the first page mentions that she loves Dorothy very much and by page two says that Dorothy is the only one allowed unbidden into Ozma's rooms at any time."

WHEN IM WATCHING A SHOW AND SUDDENLY THERES A MUSICAL EPISODE!!!
#even if it's jukebox. i still appreciate it#alex talks#i love theater sooo much i love music and dancing i love beautiful compositions meant to convey the mood and inner thoughts and motivations#of characters i love musicals as a medium#people have said to me 'i don't like musicals bc people don't just burst into song' which is obviously stupid but i realised when i watched#little shop of horrors w a friend who had never listened to a musical who asked me 'so is the music like actually happening' that some ppl#genuinely don't get it's like a medium thru which to tell a story and the songs are meant to do anything from give you exposition to give#you access to a characters inner psyche to dramatize a conversation or scene that would be happening diegetically they think it's just#putting dialogue to song and making a world where people sing for no reason. which is so crazy#and like idk it can be that even if it only was it wouldn't change that it's an interesting way to tell a story music is beautiful and the#genres in a work are an important facet of the expression it's doing too

Have our cries reached you after a full year of war that it is still ongoing! 🚨🚨
Today, we have completed a full year of the fierce war on Gaza – Palestine – and the world is still waiting for all of us to die. 😔
We know that you are tired of the many messages and appeals that we send to you, but there is no other way, which I have to admit that it is not the ideal one, to conveying our plea and the suffering we are enduring.
To donate, click here 🙏
To donate paypal here
We can barely access the internet, so please try to help us financially or by spreading our story whenever you receive one of our pleas.🛜🛜🛜
Look at the picture, and you will understand how much we need your help and support during these difficult times we are going through.
Will we be able to resist the cold of winter in these clothes? what about our children? ???!! 👧👦😔
Winter is coming now, and we need essential requirements that we miss and lack because they cost money in these harsh conditions and the insane rise in prices.
Starting with:
*** Rehabilitating the tent we live in, which does not protect us from the cold weather at night and has deteriorated under the summer sun.
*** Winter clothes, especially for the children and all family members.
*** Winter blankets to protect against the cold night weather.
*** Medicine, especially for my daughter’s eye treatment and for my mother, who suffers from high blood pressure due to the poor living conditions.
How can you help us during these difficult times?
Even a small amount of support can help us, at least initially, to provide:
*** Winter clothes and blankets for the children.
*** A new tent that can protect us from rain and strong winds.
*** Some food supplies to help boost our immunity.
*** The chance to relocate when the borders open and secure a safe place for the family where medical care is available.
In this critical time, we need your support, even if it’s just a little, as it can provide for our basic needs and help us to at least survive and stay alive

Thank you for your generosity and compassionate hearts.❤️❤️🍉🍉

Emotionally reserved characters
Instead of openly sharing their emotions with others, they keep their feelings locked inside, letting their inner thoughts do all the talking. You get a glimpse into their mind, where a storm of conflicts, doubts, and desires brews quietly beneath a calm exterior. This internal monologue allows readers to understand what’s going on inside their head, even if they don’t show it on the outside. It’s like seeing the world through their eyes, where every little thing stirs up a wave of emotions that they never express out loud.
For these characters, actions speak louder than words, but even their actions are restrained. They communicate their emotions through the smallest of gestures—a slight tightening of the jaw when they’re angry or hurt, a brief flicker in their eyes when they’re surprised, or a controlled change in posture when something makes them uncomfortable. These tiny, almost imperceptible movements can say so much more than an outburst ever could, hinting at feelings they would never openly share. It’s about what they don’t do as much as what they do.
When they do speak, every word is carefully chosen. Emotionally reserved characters don’t ramble or spill their feelings in a flood of words. Instead, they speak in a measured and controlled manner, always keeping their emotions in check. Their sentences are concise, sometimes even vague or indirect, leaving others guessing about what they’re really thinking. It’s not that they don’t feel deeply, they just prefer to keep those feelings close to the chest, hidden behind a mask of calm and composure.
For these characters, what they do is often more telling than what they say. They might not say “I care about you” outright, but you’ll see it in the way they go out of their way to help, the quiet ways they show up for the people they love. Their actions reveal their emotions—whether it’s a protective gesture, a silent sacrifice, or a kind deed done without expectation of recognition. It’s these unspoken acts of kindness that show their true feelings, even if they never say them out loud.
They often have strong personal boundaries. They keep their private lives just that - private. They don’t open up easily and are cautious about who they let into their inner circle. They might deflect conversations away from themselves or avoid sharing personal details altogether. It’s not that they don’t want to connect, it’s just that they find it hard to lower their walls and let others in, fearing vulnerability or judgment.
When they do show vulnerability, it’s in small, controlled doses. These characters may have moments where they let their guard down, but only in private or with someone they deeply trust.
Sometimes, emotionally reserved characters express their feelings through objects that hold special significance to them. Maybe it’s a worn-out book they keep close, a piece of jewelry they never take off, or an old letter tucked away in a drawer. These symbolic objects are like anchors, holding memories and emotions they can’t express in words. They serve as tangible reminders of their inner world, representing feelings they keep buried deep inside.
When these characters communicate, there’s often more to their words than meets the eye. They speak in subtext, using irony, implication, or ambiguity to convey what they really mean without saying it outright. Their conversations are filled with hidden meanings and unspoken truths, creating layers of depth in their interactions with others. You have to read between the lines to understand what they’re really saying because what they leave unsaid is just as important as what they do say.
Despite their calm demeanor, there are certain things that can break through their emotional reserve. Specific triggers - like a painful memory, a deep-seated fear, or a personal loss - can elicit a strong emotional response, revealing the depth of their feelings. These moments of intensity are rare but powerful, showing that even the most reserved characters have a breaking point.
Over time, emotionally reserved characters can evolve, gradually revealing more about themselves as they grow and change. Maybe they start to trust more, opening up to those around them, or perhaps they experience something that challenges their emotional barriers, forcing them to confront their feelings head-on.
