I really don’t get why people claiming to be fans of characters that openly do evil things, and especially when they’re heavily implied to be sexually abusive seem to want them not to be these things and want to find “proof” that they’re ~actually not so bad~?
Like at least for me the whole appeal IS the abuse? I like such characters cause I want to see them torture and rape others? I will get attached to characters for this specific reason so if they weren’t these things it would be boring to me… I’m so sick of such characters being softened that
I just flat out dislike the whole scary looking evil character is actually good and/or submissive trope now, it gets applied to too many characters where it’s definitely not the case, and I think it’s boring and overdone and hardly subversive anymore lmao
#yeah this is mostly about Mohg and Limbo#but I’m sure there are many cases out there#Mohg didn’t beat the allegations and quite frankly why would you ever want that?#it’s central to his character and fascinating and charm is not mind control#and limbo… no I don’t want the ‘monsterous rakshasa devoid of love’ to ~secretly want to help people~#he’s the evils of known envious petty bitch ashiya douman there’s no way he genuinely wants that lmao#as Seimei once called him out for it Abe no Seimei Monogatari he only sought fame and fortune#his obsessions are people he wants to hurt yes even guda in fact especially them much like danzou and i think that’s great!

it’s been rumored that dick will appear in the next battinson movie (please matt reeves do it for the people 🛐) but i was wondering magic wand, full creative control ceded to you, what villain(s) would you want to see featured? i love what they did with the riddler in the first, managing to maintain a level of camp and absurdity while still positioning him as a dangerous and serious threat. same with the penguin and falcone. i’ve seen rumors that hush may be the central villain in the sequel? which would not be my first choice, but i’m also not mad at it
obviously (hopefully) if they’re doing dick they’ll include tony zucco but beyond him what would be your dream villain(s) appearance? (and who would you cast! if you have one in mind)
if i had full creative control via magic wand i think there’s only one right answer — an actual batman film where two face is the primary antagonist.
hush super sucks for a lot of reasons, not least because his whole shtick only works if a) tommy elliot is well established in canon prior to faking his death and b) bruce has the sufficient pool of allies to make the story beats work. the batman canon has neither. cringe. get him outta here.
unlike a lot of gotham rogues, harvey dent has a relationship with both batman and bruce wayne. he’s a literal symbol of what bruce is trying to achieve in costume. he represents how a lack of supportive infrastructure can harm anyone, even those trying to do good. his internal morality, his desperate desire for control when he lost everything by another’s actions, is a really really good foil to the batman mythos.
i also think he’d continue the riddlers ideology from the first film — here’s someone who does want to change things for the better, and loses literally everything by doing so. harvey in general is just a really interesting character who’s never gotten proper respect on screen, and i think that’s a shame!! he’s a really fascinating dude!! his relationship with bruce as a civilian might inspire bruce to develop his public persona. so many options!
in an ideal world, dick grayson would feature in the first half of the film, then two face in the second. you’d have to ignore long halloween + dark victory canon to make this work, but that’s fine. maybe harvey would be disfigured while in court with zucco — a fun connection to the acid that snapped the graysons lines. harvey also has an interesting history with robin, and this would be a great start to that too.
idk who id pick to cast — someone who could portray harveys trauma in a way that’s engaging rather than disrespectful. if colin farrell hadn’t already played the penguin id say he’d be a pretty good choice. michael b jordan or daniel kaluuya would also do a phenomenal job, and keep him around the same age as bruce. someone very charismatic and charming. as long as it isn’t jacob elordi or tom holland i think there’s a lot of potential
let bruce have tender moments with gothams district attorney and adopt an orphan!!! that’s all i want!!

The Mosley Review: Dream Scenario
If there's a concept that can be explored in an almost infinite amount of ways, its a dream. Some have taken the route of exploring the subconscious theories of how your mind works while we sleep. Others have explored their deeper meanings and how they may inform you of your mental state or reflection of daily life. Aside from the the fun notion of what Christopher Nolan's Inception introduced about the invasion and control of dreams, I haven't really seen anyone tackle the idea of a shared dream experience. That feeling of deja vu is real and sometimes a few of my friends have had the same dream or variation of it. This film explores that concept in an interesting, twisted and twilight zone style that is both sad and hilarious. I loved that it really didn't focus on the why, but more on the effects of the world around the central character. What I really dug was how the character's life effected the dreams of others in a variety of ways that are expected and unexpected. Its that creativity that made for a good reveal each time and the performances really sell the more macabre nature of the dreams.
Nicolas Cage delivers his trademark charm as Paul Matthews. He was very relatable and I liked the small scale of his story. His life quickly goes from the looming mid life crisis to super stardom to nightmare in a rapid pace and it was fun to watch his reactions to it all and sometimes disturbing. Once the sequences of him appearing in others dreams, the film explores just about every scenario with being too graphic. Cage's performance in them and his reactions to what people describe were all great, funny and heartbreaking. Julianne Nicholson was excellent as his wife and their chemistry was fanastic. The amount of micro-reactions to certain conversations where Paul was the center of attention were excellent. The amount of heartbreak in her eyes as things become crazier around her family was fascinating and tense. Tim Meadows as Brett, the dean of Paul’s college, was really good and straight with Paul. He probably was his only friend that he could go to for advice and it made for some tough scenes. Michael Cera was perfect as the lead of a viral marketing, Trent. He has his moment of quirk, but it doesn't over power the scene. His scenes were so cold as it was another reminder of how Paul became a product instead of being treated like a human being. Dylan Gelula was also great as Molly, Trent's assistant. The scenes with her and Paul let you know where these dreams could go, but I'm glad it wasn't gratuitous. Their climatic scene actually made for one of the more awkward and sad scenes in the film.
The score by Owen Pallett was good and the perfect amount of light and dreamlike when it was present. The film was really well shot and the different dreams that happen all have their own since of flair or distinct sense of comedy and horror. Its a small and personal film that has the standard social commentary about the way society has gotten so sensitive and the lack of human connection is waning and how everything can becomes monetized. Over all, I enjoyed it and I do recommend for a fun take on dreams. Let me know what you thought of the film or my review in comments below. Thanks for reading!

SFX interview with Pedro Pascal
The latest issue (Jan. 2021) of SFX magazine carries a 2-page interview, which took place after the S2 premiere (technically right after The Passenger). It’s pretty good, and insightful given what took place.
This Charming Mando
Shortly after the launch of the second episode of season two, SFX caught up with the Mandalorian himself, Pedro Pascal, speaking from Budapest.
words: Adam Tanswell
There are tons of fun and interesting ways that The Mandalorian ties into Star Wars canon. Are you aware of all the Easter eggs when you’re working on the show?
There’s plenty that are pointed out to me and there’s plenty that are obvious, but I think it would be impossible for me to remember them all. On top of the Easter eggs, what I love the most is the reference to very specific genres of cinema.
Can you give us an example of that from the second season?
For season two, the set of the second episode [“The Passenger”] was the first set that I walked on to. It was this shipwrecked Razor Crest on this snowy set, and I’d seen the illustrations of the spiders that were so incredible. The spiders hatching out of those eggs were right out of Alien. Working on the show fires off all of these references to me. And then, of course, there are the specific references to the Star Wars past as well. It’s impossible to keep up with everything, but it’s endlessly fascinating.
What did you enjoy the most about working on the first episode of season two, “The Marshal”?
Working with Timothy Olyphant and being on Tatooine with Jon Favreau was incredible. I don’t know if I’m allowed to say this, but you wouldn’t believe the kind of rehearsal that the three of us had early on for that episode, in order to understand and block a sequence. You know the scene where we’re in the bar and then we step out to the main square of the town to see the Krayt Dragon? We had to rehearse it virtually first. We put on these mechanisms [VR headsets] with remote controls where we were literally able to be in a virtual world. We were actually able to rehearse it all before getting on the set. We were able to physically block the scene, which was crazy to me.
How would you describe the relationship between the Mandalorian and the Child in season two?
Through all of the action, adventure and special effects of the show, the core of it is this relationship between the Mandalorian and the Child. In spite of, and within, the largeness of it all, their story gets more intimate and deeper, which is the ultimate risk for somebody like the Mandalorian. It’s a huge risk to be vulnerable and to develop attachments, so it’s a very special relationship that we see unfold this year.
How does it feel to share the spotlight with the Child?
Honestly, it’s been an amazing experience because you get to witness a very, very unique show come to life. This isn’t my diplomatic answer; I mean this sincerely. To be part of a project like this is a unique experience for everyone, but I don’t think it’s appropriate for me to take the position as the central star because it’s not just me. There’s the Child and many, many others involved. There’s the incredible Industrial Light & Magic people, who have created this character of the Child that everyone has fallen in love with. Plus, there’s the production design team and every single department that’s involved in creating this experience, along with Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni, who are the ultimate parents of this show.
Talking of whom, what’s it like to work with Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni at the helm on a day to day basis?
The success of the show is because of their storytelling skills, as well as their fascination and their very, very, very pure love of Star Wars. It’s funny, because I have to figure out to the best of my abilities where I can contribute to achieve the success of it in every way. I saw images for the show when they were first talking to me about the project. Back then, I saw illustrations of the Child and it was the reason why I said yes to the project.
Have there been any changes to your iconic costume in season two to make it more comfortable for you?
The costume actually got a little heavier in season two. We ended the first season with him upgrading his armour. In order to have a more cinematic shine on the breastplate, it meant that some pieces were a little heavier than last year’s version
What are the themes and underlying messages of the second season that resonate with you the most?
These are very classic tales of good and evil, and how it all exists inside of us. It’s also about the journey towards the light, if that makes any sense. With my character specifically, I love that there’s this ruthless person whose physical identity is kept from the world around him – and possibly a psychological identity that’s kept from himself – but he starts to discover himself through this relationship with a vulnerable but very powerful creature. He follows his heart and does the right thing, no matter how it is against one’s practice or creed or what’s convenient. For me, that would be the prevailing message. It’s a much more intimate message than the broad strokes that can be painted onto the story as a whole. On a basic level, it’s about fighting for good.
It’s a huge deal to be such an iconic part of the Star Wars universe. Were you ready for the fame and attention that comes along with a project like this?
To be honest, I think it would be challenging for any human being. I’ve certainly been navigating how to honour being part of something as iconic as this to the best of my ability. It’s definitely a challenging, intimidating and exciting experience. It’s all of those things.
You play an iconic hero in The Mandalorian, but who were your heroes when you were growing up?
I had so many heroes. I would have to say my parents are my obvious heroes for ushering in the introduction of so many heroes, either through cinema or literature. And I continue to add more and more people to the list. As a child, Indiana Jones was definitely my personal hero. And as I got older, I remember the writer James Baldwin really, really influenced my mind and my life. I introduced myself to his writing when I was around 19 years old and he has definitely been a hero to me.
How does it feel to be a Star Wars hero?
I think it’s a beautiful thing because I can see the effect of a show like this on the children of my friends. It isn’t anything like I’ve experienced before. I love to see the look on their face if their parents tell them, “This is the Mandalorian”. There’s usually some confusion at first, because there isn’t a lot of association to this face as far as the role is concerned – but they seem to understand that somebody needs to be behind the mask. It’s somebody’s voice and it’s somebody’s limbs. It’s a magical feeling to see children’s eyes light up like that. If only I could carry around the Child everywhere, then I would really be winning!
Would definitely recommend buying the issue if you can, print or digital (via Zinio or any other platform), to show your support.

Again, been reading a lot recently, and here's some recent reads and my thoughts. (All very spoiler-free)
Johannes Cabal: The Necromancer by Jonathan L. Howard
I'd heard about this series for a while, but had always kept putting off reading it, and finally I was in the mood for some comedic (yet dark) shenanigans--and a villain protagonist as charming as Johannes Cabal really hit me just right. I really enjoyed the first of this series and the introduction to this 1920's-ish universe similar-yet-different to our own that Howard's created. His writing is crisp and clever--and Johannes is a villain protagonist worth cheering for. He's duplicitous, arrogant, and cold, yet sharp-witted and competent enough to be engaging, and even though he's amoral (driven predominately with an "ends do justify the means" mentality) there are glimmers of a conscious buried in there.
The basic gist of the first book is that Johannes Cabal is a necromancer dead-set (ba-dum-sh) on thwarting the biggest plague affecting mankind: Death. As such, he's willing to go to extreme lengths to hone and perfect his necromantic abilities. In the pursuit of this knowledge, Cabal sold his soul to Satan, but he comes to realize he actually needs his soul for his necromancy to work more properly (apparently without a soul it gets very unpredictable). In order to win his soul back, he strikes a wager with Satan: he will accumulate 100 souls for Satan in return for his own. Satan, ever the fair player (not), gifts Cabal with an infernal carnival to help Cabal reach his goal within the year. Shenanigans ensue.
While I read some books in-between this one and the next in the series, I'll write about the other here--
Johannes Cabal: The Detective by Jonathan L. Howard
So clearly I enjoyed the first installment enough to keep going, and I am glad, because I enjoyed the second one even more than the first. It feels like Howard got more comfortable with the characters and world than before, and in this one he expands his universe with some made-up countries that are similar-to-yet-different than countries on our Earth. In this one, Cabal does less fantastic tricks, as he dons the role of investigator (there's been a murder--on an airship!), but the plot was very fun. I will say this is one of the first books in a long while to genuinely make my world-weary ass laugh out loud in public. Howard truly does know how to turn a phrase and comes off with some great witticisms.
Guns of the Dawn by Adrian Tchaikovsky
Tchaikovsky has been on my radar for a while because I have had Children of Time on my reading list for what feels like an age (and I still haven't gotten around to reading it, but I will soon). To prime myself, I looked up other works by Tchaikovsky. This was around the time I was look for good "stand-alone" Adult Fantasy novels as well, so the two linked up and I had this on my TBR for a while and got around to finally cracking it open.
I really loved this book. If I could describe it in any way, it would be sort of like Pride & Prejudice if Elizabeth Bennet got drafted into a war. Seriously. That's how it reads--and Tchaikovsky made the allusions to Austen's work very clear. The setting is very English-inspired, and the time period mimics Napoleonic times. Definitely the first "Flintlock Fantasy" I've had the pleasure of reading.
The themes of the book are about the caustic nature of nationalism, the blurring of truth during war, and what is true patriotism in the face of falsehood and horror. Definitely my kind of questions--and I love watching characters thrown into completely unfamiliar environments. A genteel woman (Emily Marshwic) being tossed headfirst into grisly, mosquito-infested swamps armed with a musket? It's a fascinating journey she undergoes.
Plus the novel featured a romantic subplot that hits my enemies-to-lovers buttons hard. (It's not at all like one of those tired YA enemies-to-lovers stories, but something more grown-up and messy, which I approve of, because I love drama.) But this is more of a personal note. It's definitely not going to be for everyone.
Retribution Falls (Tales of the Ketty Jay #1) by Chris Wooding
After Johannes Cabal, I got into the mood for some steampunk, and I hadn't actually read much in the way of steampunk, so I looked up some recs and the Tales of the Ketty Jay series seemed to appear on a lot of lists for this kinda thing. The basic gist of this one is... imagine steampunk Firefly. That kinda gives you the whole vibe and feel. It's about a crew of disparate and colorful characters all running from something who meet on the ship the Ketty Jay and have to learn to work together to survive.
Overall, it was a fast-paced read (I read this 400 page sucker in a single day--while doing other stuff) and Wooding knows how to write action and interesting character interactions. The world had some glimmers of brilliance (the wizard analogs in their world--daemonist--were the most intriguing part), but otherwise it was very typical steampunk. I had no real quibbles with any of that (aside from the fact some of it read as very cliche and Wooding's inspirations seemed a little obvious--Fullmetal Alchemist and Firefly being the two big ones that kept hammering me over the head), but my main complaint was with the writing and treatment of female characters. First, there is only one main female character in the Ketty Jay's crew--Jez. I had no real issues with Jez's character or writing (in fact she's refreshing in some ways), but she's completely isolated from any other female characters (and is also the only crew member who isn't really allowed to be a complete screw up--she's somewhat sanitized, which, I guess the heroic women characters aren't allowed to be fuck ups like the men?). Second, the other predominate female characters, of whom there are only three, are mute/dehumanized (Bess), characterized as stupid and unhinged (Amalicia), and have rape-as-a-backstory-written-TERRIBLY (Trinica). All that said, as much as it was cringe, this was written in 2009, and I am sure Wooding has had some growth as a writer since then.
I liked this one enough to decide to check out the next in the series (even knowing the writing for the female characters leaves much to be desired).
Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse
A Fantasy taking place in an Americas-inspired world? Absolutely refreshing (and more please). The main gist of this one is that a cult sets out to resurrect a dead god (seriously that's the main plot crux) while political machinations are going on in the central city of this country where the resurrection is going to take place. As the novel progresses, it's like a countdown clock to game time. There's four POV characters we follow: Xiala (a Teek sea captain who is kind of an outcast from her native people and has a love for beautiful people), Serapio (the man who has been groomed since birth to be the vessel for the resurrected god, part of this process has included blinding him), Naranpa (the Sun Priest of the capital city who is trying to garner back control the priesthood has lost), and Okoa (who really doesn't even appear until way later into the book; he's been separated from his family to train to be a warrior). For the most part, I was primarily engaged (re: 90% engaged) with Xiala and Serapio's story. They were the most interesting characters, and the journey of them on the sea trying to get to the city before the ceremony was exciting and emotional. The political dealings in Naranpa's segments kind of bogged down the action--and I didn't feel anything for that. Overall though, definitely a thrilling read with a beautifully constructed world. If I had one big criticism, it's that it ended incredibly abruptly without any resolution. I knew going in this was a part of a greater whole, but I still felt the ends could've been knotted a little tighter. I'm left dangling! But I'll be sure to pick up the next one (if anything just to find out what happens to Xiala and Serapio).
Vicious by V.E. Schwab
As an unapologetic villainfucker, I had to read this one, right? It's about not just one, but two villains! How could I lose? And they're in an intense rivalry? Revenge? Betrayal? Superpowers? Gah! Be still my heart!
I'll say I enjoyed this book (fun characters, solid writing), but I didn't love it as much as I thought I would (I wish I could love yooouuuu!). Definitely worth a recommendation to anyone who loves villains and fast-paced narratives, but... there were a few things that tarnished what could've been sparkling. The biggest for me was the jumping around in the first half. For a length of time, the novel leaps between three different points of time, sometimes 2-3 pages at a time, and it was jarring (not confusing, mind you, but it was a jolt each time). I get it was done to create an air of mystique and intrigue, but it felt like I was getting dragged around by the ear. Along with this, the plot just seemed... very convenient? As various moments kept happening, it all felt too tidy and paint-by-numbers. The characters were certainly messy and fun (and I love messy and fun), but the action itself seemed to glide on well-oiled rails with no hiccups. This did lead to the magnetic pacing of the book (which I also read in a day), but it didn't do the drama any favors. Never once did it feel like the characters were caught with their pants down--and I think that's part of the point, but it kind of dampened the tension.
I liked it enough I am definitely going to check out the sequel Vengeful though. If anything I am reading for Sydney, Mitch, and Victor. I gotta know what happens to them!
--
Right now I am reading some fluffy fluff to cleanse my palette because I've been reading so much moodiness. I'm mid-way through the light and breezy Half a Soul by Olivia Atwater (and it's super cute so far) and then I am finally going to crack open Andy Weir's The Martian (because I have put off reading it for far too long).
#recent reads#book review#just jotting my thoughts down somewhere#seriously though i am itching to read the next johannes cabal but i gotta pace myself#i don't want to burn through those like i did murderbot lol

TerraMythos 2021 Reading Challenge - Book 16 of 26
Title: Tales From Earthsea (Earthsea Cycle #5) (2001)
Author: Ursula K. Le Guin
Genre/Tags: Fantasy, Short Story Collection, Novella, Third-Person, Female Protagonist
Rating: 8/10 (note: this is an average)
Date Began: 7/2/2021
Date Finished: 7/6/2021
Tales From Earthsea is a collection of five short stories and novellas which take place in the Earthsea universe. In addition, there’s a supplementary timeline of Earthsea’s history, tradition, and cultural details of note. The last story in the collection, Dragonfly, serves as a bridge between Tehanu (#4) and The Other Wind (#6), the final book in the series.
Of the five stories, my favorites (both 10/10s) were The Finder and On The High Marsh.
The way one does research into nonexistent history is to tell the story and find out what happened. I believe this isn’t very different from what historians of the so-called real world do. Even if we are present at some historic event, do we comprehend it— can we even remember it— until we can tell it in a story?
Content warnings, individual ratings/commentary, and spoilers below the cut.
Content warnings for the book: Death and violence, child abuse (including implied sexual abuse), police brutality, slavery, reference to torture and execution, brief reference to inc*st, misogyny, animal cruelty, mild body horror, very brief implied mind control via a "love charm" (it doesn't work).
#1 - The Finder (10/10)
In The Dark Time, magic is widely mistrusted. Petty tyrants use the once noble art in pursuit of power and glory. Medra, the son of a shipwright in Havnor, has magical talents honed in secret. One day, he curses a ship built for a warlord’s fleet. Unfortunately, he gets caught and sent to a prison camp. There he is forced to use finding magic to locate veins of cinnabar.
The prison exists to refine quicksilver, a substance the most powerful mage on the island believes will turn him into a god. While in the refinery, Medra feels a spiritual connection to a dying slave, a young woman named Anieb. The two of them devise a plan to kill the mage and escape. Medra’s journey eventually takes him to the island of Roke and the founding of its prestigious wizard school.
‘The dead are dead. The great and mighty go their way unchecked. All the hope left in the world is in the people of no account.’
I really enjoyed this novella. The Dark Time is largely unexplored in the stories of Earthsea, so it was interesting to read about it here. I get the feeling that we’re approaching or in the middle of one such time in the real world, so seeing a version of it on the page is depressing yet hopeful. The story is dark; mass feudal warfare, a literal concentration camp in the opening half, widespread enslavement, and abuse of power. But it also offers hope and the promise of change. The story also explores the integral role of women in not only the preservation of magic in a bleak age of humanity, but the very foundation of Roke.
Medra’s story spoke to me; how he resists the despotic powers-that-be, his connection with Anieb even after her tragic death, and how despite his disillusionment with humanity, he ultimately fights to create a better world. I also thought Gelluk was a horrifying villain. He’s characterized as a soft-spoken, almost kindly man who loves children and animals— yet his narrative thoughts involve burning hundreds of slaves alive in order to better fuel the quicksilver refinery. “Nice doesn’t mean good” taken to an extreme, and a mirror of many villains in the real world.
Le Guin was anti-capitalist, but that way of thinking seems peripheral in the Earthsea series. The Finder, however, definitely has a Marxist reading in it. A recurring theme is the disenfranchised rising up against the powerful. Indeed both antagonists, who are despotic wizards of great power, are soundly defeated by groups of people they consider powerless. Magic is only considered relevant for the value and power it produces, an idea antithetical to the rest of the series. The quicksilver refinery also embraces anti-capitalist rhetoric; this section focuses on how mass enslavement and death is used to manufacture a meaningless commodity only one person “benefits” from. That’s not even getting into the prison-industrial complex.
I dunno. This story slaps. It’s not at all what I expected from a Roke origin story.
#2 - Diamond and Darkrose (5/10)
Diamond, the son of a prosperous lumber merchant, struggles to find his true calling in life. His father disapproves of almost everything he does, including his close friendship with the local witch’s daughter Rose. While he loves music, his father derides his talents and forces him to abandon the pursuit. When Diamond shows some promise in magic, he travels to a neighboring town to serve as the local wizard’s apprentice. But when this path estranges him from Rose, he grows disillusioned.
Rose had looked after herself from an early age; and this was one of the reasons Diamond loved her. With her, he knew what freedom was. Without her, he could attain it only when he was hearing and singing and playing music.
I did not like this story very much. I gave Diamond and Darkrose a 5/10 because it’s competently written (duh), and the protagonist has a character arc not entirely dependent on the central romance. But that’s about all I can say for it.
None of the characters are especially appealing. Diamond’s mentor figures are all extremely narrow-minded. Rose, supposedly his true love since childhood, drops him the moment things become difficult. And Diamond himself is a pushover who only grows a spine and pursues his dreams at the end of the story. I understand that’s his character flaw and his arc is about overcoming that. But due to all these factors, I was annoyed by every major character. The only person I didn’t dislike was Diamond’s mother, who only shows up for a couple of scenes.
Someone please tell me there are love stories out there where the romantic tension is NOT based on a fucking MISUNDERSTANDING. That shit drives me up a wall! It’s so overdone and painful to read.
#3 - The Bones of the Earth (8/10)
Dulse is an aging wizard on the island of Gont, reflecting on his life and relationship with his former apprentice, a young man he calls Silence. But he senses something amiss on the island; a massive earthquake poised to destroy a nearby port town and its inhabitants. To avert disaster, Dulse realizes he must turn to an ancient form of magic taught to him long ago— and he needs Silence’s help to save the town.
In there he knew he should hurry, that the bones of the earth ached to move, and that he must become them to guide them, but he could not hurry. There was on him the bewilderment of any transformation. He had in his day been fox, and bull, and dragonfly, and knew what it was to change being. But this was different, this slow enlargement. I am vastening, he thought.
So I’ve always liked Ogion in the main series; I love the idea of an immensely powerful wizard who lives an unassuming life of silence, contemplation, and appreciation of the natural world. In The Bones of the Earth, we get a glimpse of Ogion through his mentor’s eyes. Ogion’s heroism and how he stopped the earthquake is mentioned several times in the main series, but this is our first look at what actually happened.
Dulse is an unexpected and fascinating perspective character. It would be so easy to tell this story wholly from Ogion’s perspective, but I think making Dulse the protagonist was the right call. In particular, Dulse’s mind is starting to go. Le Guin presents this by utilizing flashbacks and connecting them to the present. This technique conveys Dulse’s disorientation and confusion so the reader experiences it alongside him... it’s hard to describe without actually reading the story. I also loved the little twist at the end regarding where Dulse learned the ancient magic that saves the island. There’s also a strong thematic connection to The Farthest Shore; death and becoming one with the rest of the world.
#4 - On The High Marsh (10/10)
A half-mad wanderer named Irioth comes upon a small settlement on the volcanic, marshy island of Semel. A murrain has been devastating the local cattle population, and Irioth offers his powers as a curer to heal the animals. He settles into a calm rural life with Gift, a widow working a small dairy. Though Gift likes Irioth, and the animals instinctively trust him, she senses something amiss with the man. Soon, Irioth’s dark past threatens to return and disturb the peace.
“Oh, yes,” Irioth said. “It was my fault.” But she forgave, and the grey cat was pressed up against his thigh, dreaming. The cat’s dreams came into his mind, in the low fields where he spoke with the animals, the dusky places. The cat leapt there, and then there was milk, and the deep soft thrilling. There was no fault, only the great innocence. No need for words. They would not find him here. He was not here to find. There was no need to speak any name. There was nobody but her, and the cat dreaming, and the fire flickering. He had come over the dead mountain on black roads, but here the streams ran slow among the pastures.
This story is a banger. It has a Western vibe— a stranger coming into a cattle town haunted by a mysterious past. Also cowboys. It’s an atmospheric story, and I think hits on the “small rural town” vibe better than Tehanu did. But there were several writing choices I especially liked.
We don’t learn Irioth’s name until a little while into the story; his physical description, temperament, and ability to immediately identify Gift’s true name just by looking at her makes one assume he’s Ged. He’s also got an interesting redemption arc, because it’s presented in a reverse order. We see Irioth’s genuine desire to do good, and his gentle and patient manner with animals and other people. He doesn’t even consider asking for payment for curing the murrain until Gift tells him he should. But there’s a sense that something is off; he’s paranoid, clearly running from something. The use-name he picks is Otak, a fictional ferret-like creature— which Gift asserts looks nice, but has sharp teeth.
Near the end, Ged actually does show up and explain what happened to Irioth. They have pretty similar backstories; both were powerful, arrogant young mages who messed with forces they shouldn’t have, then went through great personal sacrifice to right the wrong (oh god the initial deception was intentional they’re narrative foils oh god). Ged embraced the darkest aspects of himself to avert calamity. Irioth came to Semel to escape Roke and atone by helping others. One detail I especially liked was that Irioth once considered healing beneath him, but now he takes a deep joy in using it to help.
#5 - Dragonfly (8/10)
Irian lives a solitary life-- her father is a drunkard living in the ruins of their family’s once prosperous estate. Her closest relationship is with the local village witch, who named her in secret in the dead of night. When a disgraced young wizard named Ivory comes to town, he sees Irian as a potential conquest. To gain power over her, he hatches a scheme; disguise Irian as a man, travel to Roke, and sneak her into the male-only wizard school— humiliating the great Masters.
But Irian is restless. She knows she has power, but her true nature is a mystery even to her. Irian sees Ivory’s plan as an opportunity to find answers from the most powerful wizards in the world. When the Doorkeeper actually lets her into the school, she finds herself in a magical and political conflict over the future of Roke— and discovers what exactly she is.
“Dark is bad,” said the Patterner. “Eh?”
Irian drew a deep breath and looked at him eye to eye as they sat there. “Only in dark the light,” she said.
This is one of those stories that has a rocky start, but a great second half. The first part of the novella felt dry to me; I’ve read plenty of tales about social outcasts with weird, unexplainable powers. On top of this, a chunk of the early narration is from Ivory’s POV, and he’s a complete tool. That can be a fun perspective to take, and I like the fact that he thinks he’s manipulating Irian when she’s the one pulling the strings. But since he’s an irrelevant character who disappears from the story halfway through, it feels like a waste to devote a huge chunk of the story to him.
However, once Irian arrives at Roke, the story gets much more interesting. Her presence at Roke causes a huge scandal that divides the Masters. Women being forbidden from Roke is a Series Thing at this point, but Earthsea is in an era of change (although I DO question that she’s the first woman to try it). The Finder demonstrated that women were pivotal in the foundation of Roke, something largely erased from history. Barring women stems from a power hungry bigot codifying it into tradition.
Irian finds some unexpected allies--minor characters in the previous books. The Doorkeeper continues to be the coolest motherfucker there. The Patterner is a major character in this story; he was in just one scene in The Farthest Shore, so I liked learning more about him. The Namer is the kind of guy you’d expect to be a stodgy traditionalist, so him siding with Irian is surprising. The Summoner, a heroic figure in previous books and stories, is a sinister villain here. As for the ending, well… if you didn’t see it coming, I’d wonder if you even read Tehanu. The same hints are there.
There were little particulars I liked, such as Irian moving into a decrepit hut that’s definitely Medra’s old home. My favorite detail is that this story has a parallel scene with The Finder. In The Finder, there’s a scene where an antagonist, Early, invades Roke in the form of a dragon. He lands on Roke Knoll, a site of power that reveals one’s true form. It turns him back into a human, leaving him defenseless when the residents of Roke attack him and repel his invasion. The reversal happens in Dragonfly. Irian gets attacked by one of the Masters while at Roke Knoll — and its magic turns her into her true form, a dragon. Props to whoever picked the cover design, since it references both scenes.
#6 - A Description of Earthsea
I’m not rating this since it’s basically a lore dump. It’s a deep dive into Earthsea’s history, languages, cultures, and other relevant world details. It’s the kind of bonus info a lot of fantasy series tack on as reference material. According to Le Guin, she wrote this to get some idea of the timeline on each of these stories.
As a series, Earthsea has relatively little worldbuilding exposition. Sometimes characters reference legends or historical events, but usually the reader lacks the context to fully understand them. The focus is more on the lives of the characters and their personal experience of the world. I think something like A Description of Earthsea has benefits and drawbacks for the reader. On one hand it's nice to have some definitive information to tie things together. On the other, this does represent a loss of some of the mystery in the story.
I think this is the first thing in the series that even mentions homosexuality, so props for that I guess?
Closing Thoughts
A short story collection is always going to have high and low points. I tend to look at each story individually and score that way, but an average is always misleading. Diamond and Darkrose dragged the score down since there were only five stories total. But I enjoyed the majority of them. I am interested to see where the human/dragon subplot goes in the final installment; I assume Irian will show up at some point? We’ll see.

Day 2: Symphony Impossible to Play
Picking up from yesterday, we just met Rose.
https://homestuck.com/story/220
Right out of the gate, here’s something interesting - another one where a character interacts directly with her medium! I wonder whose eyes she feels on her. Are Rose’s Seer powers allowing her to detect us watching her? Later on, it turns out that Kanaya was watching her all along during her intro. Maybe that’s who she senses? I think it’s possibly both of those, and a third option - Rose is a paranoid girl who doesn’t feel very secure in her own home, or comfortable in her own skin.
More after the break.
https://homestuck.com/story/223
John does a lot of roleplaying, and this is one of the earliest spots in the comic where he does this. Specifically, John performs a lot of his favorite scenes from different movies, and no surprise to anyone, almost all of the times he does, he’s performing either the role of a lover, or of a father. Malo, who I respect a lot, talks a little about John’s appreciation for signifiers here, along with some of their chums. I was going to say something about other points where John’s inner voice comments on the necessity of signifiers to make a thing itself (OR ELSE IT’S A PRETTY PISS POOR EXCUSE FOR THE THING) yesterday, but I didn’t have the thoughts fully formed at the time. Luckily, Malo will call attention to it for me.
This is another one of those weird things about the way that reality works, and it might all retroactively work that way because John expects it to work that way. Homestuck is full to bursting with symbols - everything in Homestuck is extremely abstracted as part of the art style, and also as part of the storytelling, often rendered down to some basic elements that make it recognizable. An example of something Homestuck uses as a symbol would be like, Mustaches - a symbol associated with Grandpa. Swords, symbols associated with Striders. The symbol doesn’t have to have any kind of literal logical association with the thing it represents, but we associate the two things with each other because of cultural context.
https://homestuck.com/story/225
I always liked Rose’s house best out of the group. There’s something deeply romantic to me about the premise of a wooded retreat far away from civilization. I’m pretty sure the Lalonde residence is based on Falling Water but I could be mistaken. As long as I’m thinking about Symbols, by the way, Cats are a Lalonde Symbol. Their presence in the story always evokes Lalondes even when they’re not in the room (which is not very often, as it turns out!) and by association, witches. Both of the Lalondes are witches in the sense of being powerful women who attain to that power by consorting with dubious and transgressive sources.
Rose is up front and melodramatic about her not so great relationship with her Mom, and it’s pretty much literally always on her mind. (Rose’s Mom is an alcoholic, and I should be clear that her relationship has lots of reasons to be not great, but Mom Lalonde deliberately being spiteful to Rose is not one of the reasons). I like to think there are a lot of these misunderstandings between parents and children and if that we were just a little more open with each other, we’d find that we didn’t have as much to be afraid of in each other as we think. But I might never know. Another one of my favorite series that has the inability of Parents and Children to communicate with each other as a central theme is Hideaki Anno’s Neon Genesis Evangelion and if you haven’t watched it, I highly recommend you go do so.
https://homestuck.com/story/231
The presentation of the Guardians is so unsettling that in my first readthrough, I thought they must be some kind of monsters artificially imposed into these characters’ obviously artificial lives to create difficulty for them. Clearly, I thought the story was going in a completely different direction than it actually ended up going.
https://homestuck.com/story/236
Rose does not always think her cunning plans all the way through, something she has in common with her biological father.
https://homestuck.com/story/271
I probably could have mentioned this funny little guy earlier than I did, but Wayward Vagabond is in the story now. I’m not totally clear on whether the Carapacians have any greater meaning, but they sure are charming, and like just about everything that isn’t specifically John and his friends, they exist on a layer of the story that is just a little further away from just the text, and a little closer to the audience - they can enter narrative prompts, much like you or I would have if we were involved in Homestuck’s earliest pages. As a rule in Homestuck, the more influence you personally have over the narratives which change the material conditions of the characters’ lives, the more sinister and ambiguous you become. Luckily, WV turns out to be a pretty benign guy, but if you’re the sort of person to be reading this, you are no doubt aware of the fact that most of Homestuck’s narrators don’t turn out to be nearly so friendly. The Carapacians introduce us to the idea that characters in the story are allowed to be audience members and narrators too. So I guess, really, that’s the greater meaning of the Carapacians.
https://homestuck.com/story/272
Always enjoy Rose’s long, outlandish metaphors. Any chance to read more of them is a good chance to. (Although the main one on this page is a holdover from some of the cringy stuff in MSPA’s early days - some of it slightly racist, some of it slightly homophobic.)
https://homestuck.com/story/287
Andrew’s insistence on having characters like Dave rap at us, the audience, actually reminds me a lot of JRR Tolkien’s tendency to pepper his stuff with songs that he wrote for his in universe stuff. And while both are legitimately talented at their craft, as one of my friends put it, “I’m not a rapper... so stop rappin’ at me!”
https://homestuck.com/story/293
Jade is another character whose first post I forgot to mention, but here she is having a bit more to say than before! I think I remember my initial impression of Jade being pretty favorable, and then gradually declining until she got a bit more exposition. Perky people bother me.
https://homestuck.com/story/307
Another one of Andrew’s cool prose poems. I don’t mind these as much as the rapping, clearly. Rain and Strings are another pair of symbols pretty strongly associated with Rose, although I hardly need to tell you that. This obviously alludes to Rose’s mythological quest. I think it also foreshadows a lot of her worst decisions. Rose overthinks and overthinks and overthinks, and then by the time she should have acted, it’s too late, and she overreacts instead, usually in catastrophic ways.
https://homestuck.com/story/312
Dave’s room isn’t nearly as messy as Rose’s, but his bed isn’t made, same as every other Derse Dreamer. This is also probably the first place that we get hints of Dave’s fascination with death (he collects dead things). He’s specifically fascinated with his own death, and fantasizing about self-sacrifice, something that he ends up doing twice over the course of the comic, is one of the ways that Dave experiences masculinity. Thanks for that, Bro.
https://homestuck.com/story/320
Dave almost immediately fails to uphold his irony schtick within just seconds of our getting to know him. For all that he pretends to the same extreme aloofness as his brother, I don’t think there’s an insincere bone in Dave’s body. Then again, maybe he’s just getting distracted by food, of which there is a significant dearth in his household. Thanks for that, Bro.
https://homestuck.com/story/326
I will never get back the time I spent reading Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff. Was it worth it?
Yeah probably.
https://homestuck.com/story/332
I think this is the very first time I’ve noticed that Dave has a nifty gaming computer with the transparent glass pane and the interior lights and everything. Like, this readthrough, this panel. I’m sure I mentioned somewhere that I get more out of this webcomic every time I read it.
https://homestuck.com/story/333
Dave and Rose are another character relationship I just enjoy tremendously. Their verbal sparring is one of the highlights of the webcomic.
https://homestuck.com/story/344
Bro’s puppet fascination tells us pretty early on that this is a hands-off, manipulative kind of guy. While Bro isn’t in a metanarrative layer the way that the Carapacians are, positioning him as a puppetmaster, controlling things from behind the scenes, still gives him the same kind of sinister ambiguity as one of the comic’s actual narrators.
https://homestuck.com/story/357
Far from being the kind of chill cooldude who kills with a straight face and doesn’t look at explosions, Dave kills a random bird and immediately feels remorseful about it. Poor kid.
https://homestuck.com/story/360
There is almost nothing worse than having someone perform interest in something you enjoy to try and influence you. Unfortunately, that is not what is taking place here. Rose is quick to assume malicious intent as she does a bit earlier when she tucks her journals under her bed because she feels like she’s being watched.
https://homestuck.com/story/369
Mom, sadly, giving your daughter oodles of presents and showering everything she does in ostentatious displays of affection is sadly not a substitute for earnest communication with her and your emotional presence. These two need to learn each other’s love languages. (Note to self. Not everybody enjoys lavish presents as much as I do.)
Roxy is a giver. That’s something that shows up time and again, especially when we meet her in person much later.
https://homestuck.com/story/377
Mom Lalonde performs femininity.
https://homestuck.com/story/382
Jade sees right through Dave.
In other notes, I think most of these kids would be way happier if their Guardians were more emotionally available, and less badass.
I’m going to come back to that and write more on it at some point instead of just alluding to it repeatedly. Maybe after Dave Strifes with his bro.
https://homestuck.com/story/389
Is Mom’s compulsive gift-giving because that’s her love language? Is she performing capitalism by giving her daughter extremely expensive gifts as a show of affection? Is it both things? (Roxy is never exposed to Capitalism except by the awesome powers of Dirk’s cached wikipedia archives, and her gift-giving tends to be significantly less ostentatious than Mom’s.)
https://homestuck.com/story/404
John roleplays some more.
https://homestuck.com/story/414
Here’s where I’ll say one of the things that I think is like a big deal, because I guess now’s as good a time as any. A lot of the roleplaying that John does, and the one-upsmanship that he and Dave do with each other, and Dave and Bro do with each other, and Mom’s ironic housewife routine, and the burial of Jasper in a mausoleum are rituals. Like symbols, they’re cultural touchstones that are ultimately empty when they no longer point to the thing that they signify. Funerals are grieving rituals. When a funeral doesn’t functionally serve the purpose of helping with grief, it becomes an empty signifier. Maybe this is how Mom grieved for Jaspers - I’ll have to check and see what Roxy thinks about it when I get that far, because I forgot.
We do a lot of stupid things in a monkey see monkey do fashion because we’ve just always done them that way, even when they were built for a completely different society, and no longer serve the same function that they used to serve. Big ostentatious funerals are like that, I think. Ideally, they’d give big families an opportunity to come together in mutual support, celebrate the joy brought to them by the deceased, demonstrate compassion to the grieving, and so on and so forth. I’m not prescriptively saying “don’t have a funeral” here, my point is just that funerals are one of those cultural narratives that I mentioned in the first post.
This funeral does not serve the function of helping Rose to grieve. It’s just kind of fucked up.
https://homestuck.com/story/415
Oh hey, Rose has more fish language attached to her - she earlier makes reference to her knitting-needle tech by saying that she thinks she could probably filet a fish with them. Here, she talks about having bigger fish to fry. Rose is associated with Water through her planet, the Land of Light and Rain, and with fish through Cetus. She’s also attached to other deep sea creatures in the form of the horrorterrors.
https://homestuck.com/story/420
I’m going to pause for now and post this since I’ve read through another roughly 200 pages of Homestuck this evening on the fortuitous page of 420. It probably helps that I started earlier than I did yesterday. Nanna’s about to give some exposition, and I already wrote my big brain take for the day so for now;
Cam signing off, alive and not alone.

Machines Research
As I briefly outlined on my mood boards, I decided that “machines” would be the most interesting topic for me to go into. From here, I decided to explore something more specific as the topic is extremely broad.
So, I settled on the theme “Man and Machine”.
I think that the relationship between humans and our autonomous creations is interesting and well-expored in fiction. There is something so daunting about a setting in which the “villain” is not some omniscient being of pure evil that just exists - but is instead man’s own creation.
What I am expressing immediately makes robots come to mind. But I am not solely expressing this, like a fictitious future where our sentient robot overlords overthrow the human race that created it, or something... This could also apply to the very real (and to a degree, very current) age of man being a reliant slave to technology. I am sure we have all thought about this during lockdown.
A piece of media perfect for researching a combination of this, is actually my favourite film: WALL-E (2008).
I personally think WALL-E is a delightful and charming film, with a very hopeful conclusion, despite its bleak setting and depiction of humanity’s future.
In case whoever may be reading this has not seen this film (shame on you), the film tells a story about a robot in the far future, possibly the last of many who were tasked to clean up Earth and compact the excessive rubbish that made the planet uninhabitable
Given his rustic and old appearance (especially compared to the brief depiction of what the robots looked like brand new), it is assumed that he has been active for many, many years. He ends up visited by an inspecion probe, EVE, and latching onto her rocket to end up in space and aboard the ship which the entire human population resides on.
The film portrays all humans as deformed blobs who do not walk or enjoy “real life”, rather just obtaining it through a holographic screen on their hover-chairs.
This is except for the ship’s Captain who is important in theory, but has been made a figurehead by the ship’s controlling rogue AI, “Auto”
(Auto’s “eye” is an obvious homage to 2001: A Space Odyssey’s rogue AI, HAL 9000)
Because EVE found a plant on Earth, the Captain is informed that humans can return to their home because life is sustainable once again. Auto refuses and antagonises the Captain’s efforts, causing a mutiny against him.
The film concludes with the “good” robots helping humanity return to Earth and start restoring the planet.
A very interesting and brief detail about the film is this shot of the lineage of ship captains and the “de-evolution” of humanity. Auto is shown getting closer and closer to the camera every time, showing he is more in power. Humans lifespans are portrayed as being longer, and the pictures gradually resemble less and less like real human photographs. I find it interesting that, despite the humans’ cartoony appearances, live action footage of humans are used the in the films to portray past humans and make it feel more real.
As I am researching machines, I thought I should look at the design of the titular character himself, which I find fascinating. Designed from a central box, in which he can seamlessly fold up into, I think as a character who serves his in-universe purpose but also has to look appealing to the film’s target audience, WALL-E has a perfect design. He is not obscenely detailedly designed to the point of losing appeal, and his design is not so barrenly simple that he is not believable in-universe.
Another thing that makes him appealing to the audience, as well as linking in with the story and my theme, is how he appears somewhat humanoid. He has a head, a neck, a torso, arms, hands and shoulders, and legs of a sort. I think this reflection of humans designing creations in our own image is important to keep in mind.
As can be seen quite obviously, and especially so from concept art, WALL-E is inspired by Johnny Five, the central robot character from the 1986 film Short Circuit and its sequel.
Due to being a live-action character rather than animated, his movements are much clunkier and less expressive, but his design is still important, and once again very humanoid - even more so than WALL-E.
Another piece of fiction important to me that fits with “Man and Machine”, is Portal 2. Released ten years ago, it is considered one of the greatest video games of all time. Whilst the original video game fits the theme as well, it is much more thoroughly explored in the sequel. The narrative involves the protagonist, a human named Chell who has been preserved thousands of years into the future, navigating and eventually attempting to escape a giant and abandoned test centre, controlled by a rogue AI named GLaDOS.
Except that, it is later revealed that GLaDOS was a human. She was the company founder’s wife, who was forced into becoming enhanced/immortal, and memory of her past human life was wiped. It became uncovered that GLaDOS became rogue and killed the human population of the laboratory, with Chell remaining the sole survivor.
She is the antagonist of the original Portal but a twist occurs in the sequel where she becomes the protagonist’s ally. Her design changes between the two games. Her most famous and known design (above) was her appearance in the sequel, but originally she looked very different.
I think it is easy to see why she was redesigned, and why her redesign is so favoured. The head shape on the new look is much more distinct, and I think it also resembles a human head more, going back to making more appealing designs. Although she does not serve as much of a purpose with her physical body like WALL-E, rather she is the brain of the test centre, she is given a manoeuvrable body resemblant of a torso.
The setting of the game goes further, and there are other robots in the story, but I think that Portal 2 is a fantastic basis for human-machine conflict like WALL-E.

I Grade: Colress
One of the most evil Pokemon villains, or one of the least evil? With this guy, it’s hard to tell.
Games: Debuting in Black 2/White 2, Dr. Colress is a scientist pursuing a single-minded obsession: researching what draws out the fullest power within a Pokemon. Oh, and he’s also the leader of the resurrected Team Plasma as appointed by Ghetsis, but that barely factors into anything in the long run. And there lies the main problem with Colress here, despite what an intriguing character he is, he is barely explored as a villain. All encounters with him before the climax presents him as just a wandering scientist, and in the climax there’s just one big scene on the bridge of the Plasma Frigate where he’s revealed as the new Team Plasma boss, you battle him, and then he just drops out of helping Team Plasma since it’s not getting him the results he wants. Colress is meant to be the new N type figure, but N revealed the truth about his alignment when you were halfway through your badge collecting. Colress does so after you’ve already collected all 8 badges! He’s a badly-done “twist villain”, which is especially ridiculous when most people actually figured out he was a bad guy from the word go. His color scheme is black, white and blue, of course he’s connected to Team Plasma!
The saving grace for Colress is just the sheer charismatic presence he gives off. From his handsome bespectacled face, swooshing white coat, usage of technology, fascinating combination of brilliance and ruthless amorality as he pursues his research, and a kick-ass battle theme, Colress exudes coolness possibly more than anyone else in Team Plasma. Many are fooled into thinking he’s a better person than he is because he’s so charming.
But to his credit, Colress does become a better person when he makes his unexpected return in Gen VII. In Sun/Moon, it’s just a quick little cameo and the opportunity to battle him at the Battle Tree. But in Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon, he actually plays a major role in both the main story and the postgame’s Episode RR. While still fundamentally amoral (he aligns himself with the dubious Aether Foundation just for the scientific opportunity), Colress has learned that it’s the good and positive qualities such as friendship, love and trust that brings out the full potential of a Pokemon, and so he’s working that angle as he continues in his research. And US/UM allows Colress to live up to his own full potential, solidifying him as a fantastic character, which he keeps at being in Pokemon Masters, now fully voice-acted by Yung-I Chang.
Score = 3
Anime: Colress is a central antagonist of the Episode N arc of Best Wishes, and not only does he easily steal the show from Ghetsis when it comes to villainy but he arguably steals the show from N when it comes to who the arc’s most memorable character is! Being cemented as a villain right from his introductory scene, this version of Colress gets the screentime to indulge in all of the scientific evildoing that the B2/W2 kept totally off-screen, and he does so magnificently. He usually appears as serene and charming as you’d expect of him, but when using his ever-evolving mind control technology to push the limits of a Pokemon’s strength he flies off the handle with childish glee, showing just how unhinged he truly is. As he himself notes, the progress of his research is all that matters to him, not good or evil...in other words, his mindset from the games is adapted perfectly. Furthermore, it’s he and his technology and the Plasma Grunts under his command that drives the arc’s conflict forward, he is the active leading figure of Team Plasma that Ghetsis never is. It’s his defeat through the destruction of his machine that is the climactic point of the arc’s finale. And even as all the lead figures of Team Plasma are arrested, the scene only focuses on him as he happily decides that now that he knows mind control is a failure, he’ll switch to researching ways to speak to Pokemon next...as long as there’s science to be done, then he’s satisfied!
To me, Colress is definitely the biggest stand-out of Episode N, managing to be not only its best villain and one of the best villains of BW, but also one of the best in the entire anime.
Score = 4
Manga: Colress debuts well ahead of when you’d expect him to, in the Black/White Chapter under the alias of “Hood Man”. Wearing a robe, hood and metallic mask, Colress competes in the Unova League and then works to aid Ghetsis in his plan once Team Plasma takes over the stadium. This appears to be a clever reference to the Mastermind of Mirage Pokemon OVA, where a character who was basically a prototype of Colress (a young, amoral scientist obsessed with researching Pokemons’ strength) ran around in a cloaked, masked alter-ego.
In the Black 2/White 2 Chapter, Colress becomes the central antagonist apart from Ghetsis who controls the Plasma Frigate and the Kyurem Cannon, just as he was in the games...except that Kusaka took a page from the anime by having him as an outright villain from the word go and by giving him the same crazed, hammy mad scientist attitude about his work, except that the childish quality of it is cranked up to 11! This makes Colress a villain who is truly equal parts terrifying and hilarious, and is byfar the strongest depiction of the character. It helps that he and Blake, the arc’s main hero, develop a strong arch-enemy relationship, with Colress even serving as the Final Boss in place of Ghetsis. There may be higher emotional stakes in taking down Ghetsis, but Colress is the truly dangerous one in battle. He is ultimately defeated by Blake and frozen by Kyurem, thawing out in a prison cell later on.
Score = 4.5
TCG: Colress is a prominent villain in the expansion trilogy of Plasma Storm, Plasma Freeze, and Plasma Blast, appearing right off the bat in the first of them with the “Colress” card, along with “Colress Machine”, “Hypnotoxic Laser”, “Plasma Energy” and “Plasma Frigate” cards. Much like Pokemon Adventures, the TCG clearly seems to be doing things in a similar way to the anime...in fact, a Japanese promo for the Plasma Blast set actually featured narration from Colress, voiced by his anime seiyuu, Hiroki Touchi! So you just know this guy is fun.
Score = 3.5
Other: In episode 14 of the Generations web series, Colress appears aboard the bridge of the Plasma Frigate as it launches its attack on Opelucid City. This is a much-appreciated look into Colress’ off-screen villainy in B2/W2, showing just how cold (pun intended) the man can be in the name of science. Not on the level of Episode N’s Colress, especially since he’s drawn to be pretty stiff and his voicework lacks proper inflection, but it’s still a good depiction.
Score = 3
TOTAL FRANCHISE SCORE = 3.5 out of 5
Colress is a fascinating and cool character in every appearance he makes in the franchise, embodying a twisted variety of Grey between the Black and White in that morals don’t mean anything to him, whether they be good morals or bad morals. The answers that his research and experiments provide, no matter how he conducts them, is all that matters to this man. The manifesto he provides on the Plasma Frigate embodies why he is such a great villain:
What I desire is to bring out the entirety in Pokemon potential! If I can accomplish that, I don't care what it takes! If it means the strength must be brought out by the interactions between Pokemon and Trainers, then so be it! If it means you have to use a merciless approach, like Team Plasma's, and force out all of the Pokemon's power, then so be it! And yes, if the entire world is destroyed as a result, then so be it...
BONUS: Which version is my personal favorite?
Much like Giovanni and Ghetsis, even if the Adventures version is the best, my most personal fondness is for another version. The energetic, shamelessly mad scientist of the anime is the first time I came to love Colress, who I felt was a waste of potential in the B2/W2 games.

Birthday Profiles Of Riverdale Actors Based On The Secret Language Of Birthdays Concept! (Part IX)
What Is The Secret Language Concept?
The Secret Language scientific personality reports have proven to be over 90% accurate after 21 years in use by millions of people in a dozen languages worldwide. Our data comes from Gary Goldschneider’s 40-year empirical study of the life stories of more than 20,000 people, analyzed by date of birth. Gary looked at 50 people born on your birthday and found the personality traits held in common by 45 of them. Then he created personality profiles from those traits for each day, week, month, season and year and I further combined those profile names into the ultimate distillation of your personality - your Secret Language Name. Combining astrology, numerology, and pure psychic intuition, The Secret Language of Birthdays is a wholly unique compilation that reveals one’s strengths, weaknesses, and major issues while providing practical advice and spiritual guidance. Many have suspected that your birthday affects your personality and how you relate to others. Nineteen years and over one million copies later, The Secret Language of Birthdays continues to fascinate readers by describing the characteristics associated with being born on a particular day. The 366 personality profiles are based on astrology, numerology, the tarot, and Gary Goldschneider’s observations of more than 14,000 people. Your strengths, weaknesses, and major concerns will be illuminated while you are given practical advice and spiritual guidance. After you study your profile, it will be hard to resist examining those of family, friends, colleagues, and even celebrities.
The Personality Periods
The forty-eight personality periods, made up of twelve cusps and thirty six weeks, are units between six and nine days in length. Personology predicts the personality characteristics of anyone born within these dates. In other words, those born in the same period will share certain predictable character traits. While this may not completely represent ever individual, it is sufficient to provide an understanding of his or her basic energies. Extrapolating from the personology periods, it is possible to predict the nature of the relationship between any two people. Thus, The Secret Language Of Relationships combines each period of the year with itself and every other period to predict the nature of the resulting relationship. For example, a person born on March 31 falls into the Aries I period. This is the Week of the Child which symbolizes the freshness and openness of early childhood and of the spring season (lasting from March 25 to April 1). People born during this time are characterized by a childlike, enthusiastic orientation. This in contrast to a person born on November 10, who would be a Scorpio II (encompassing November 3 to 11). Born in the fall, which is symbolically likened to middle age, this week takes Depth as its central symbol. Thus, it becomes possible to consider the theoretical implications of an Aries I-Scorpio II relationship.

#49. Julian Haig (Birthday: Aug. 5, 1993 – The Day Of Resolute Composure; Personality Period: Leo II – Aug. 3 to Aug. 10 – The Week Of Balanced Strength; Place Of Birth: Melbourne, Australia)
Leo II’s are solid and tough and do not back down from challenges; in fact, they thrive on them, and are often at their best when facing problems and difficulties. Although drawn toward experiences that hold an element of danger, they are usually not foolhardy enough to attempt the impossible. Realists, they are well aware of their limitations, which they may stretch to the limit if necessary but will rarely try to overleap. Fixed attitudes characterize them, so it will take a great deal of patience and persistence to get them to change their mind. Leo II’s pride themselves on their ability to spot phoniness and nonsense, and are particularly critical of metaphysical ideas not strongly grounded in the here and now. Leo II’s generally exercise tremendous powers of concentration, but through their fixation on their object they may lose the peripheral vision necessary for keeping in touch with their surroundings. In a related problem, their reliance on logical reasoning can detract from what may well be their best suit—that is, their capacity for strong hunches and their intuitive strengths. These traits may lead them to get out of touch with reality while at the same time remaining convinced of their rightness—a dangerous combination. Gifted with endurance and tenacity, Leo II’s hang in there for the duration. The upside of this character trait is their intense loyalty and devotion; the downside is a streak of masochism—a tendency, for example, to suffer while trying to hold a romance, marriage or business together. They can continue in an unhappy or stressful relationship for years without undue complaint, patiently seeking ways to make it work. Although they would sometimes do better by quitting, they will usually refuse to take the easy way out, and they may have little respect for those who lack their level of commitment. When long-standing relationships that have proven unsatisfactory finally do collapse, perhaps due to a stroke of fate, or to the partner’s unwillingness to continue, Leo II’s have a tendency to sink into depression. Too often they blame themselves. A long period of grieving may be necessary before they are once again able to function well. They can certainly be their own worst enemies. Those born during the Week of Balanced Strength exude power and self-confidence when their prodigious energies meld, but these same energies also get out of control and can threaten to tear them apart. At such times they make a piteous sight. Alcohol or drug binges and borderline or outright criminal activities can all be the evidence of Leo II energies running amok. Keeping balanced is less an ideal for them to attain than an absolute condition for their healthy survival. The children and friends of Leo II’s can be severely jolted if these normally reassuring presences disintegrate. Thus Leo II desire to be a protector of the weak and a friend to the underdog can backfire. Those born in the Week of Balanced Strength do well in highly structured situations of their own making, situations in which they are at the helm. They periodically feel an acute need to withdraw into a private place, however, and sometimes to a strictly isolated one. The problem here is an accompanying tendency to nurse hurts and slights, and in extreme cases to manifest paranoia. Developing an accepting attitude and working to diminish dogmatic and intolerant thought are essential to their mental health. For the most part, Leo II’s are extraordinarily faithful people. They see themselves as champions of the downtrodden and protectors of the weak. They despise exclusion and condescension and, for this reason, generally side with the common person rather than the privileged. It is not that they do not have an ability to mix well with a variety of social classes; rather, they dislike insincerity or pretension. In their toughness, Leo II’s are able to withstand many disappointments. They usually weather the storm and win out through knowing how to wait, “having the long breath.” They like being independent, but nonetheless tend to build a well-defined life in which they exert maximum power with a minimum of fuss. Those involved with Leo II’s, whether as co-workers, employees, family, mates or friends, know that they must not be pushed or prodded when in a negative frame of mind but, rather, must be left alone to work things out for themselves. Leo II’s also sometimes accused of insensitivity. This is more often a result of their being preoccupied than of a lack of understanding on their part, for many are psychologically astute; yet although they can comprehend another person’s emotional state, they may feel no need to sympathize with it. Leo II’s are not especially empathic with those around them, and are capable of a stony detachment. Many find emotional matters simply too messy to get involved in, a response that is sometimes traceable to unpleasant childhood experience. When the parent, child or lover of a Leo II is of a more feeling type, conflict can result. Being straightforward and unpretentious themselves, those born during the Week of Balanced Strength dislike people who put on airs. Nothing excites their often uncontrollable temper more than insincerity, lying or disingenuousness. Leo II anger and hotheadedness can weaken the psychological balance on which their strength depends. Those closest to these intense individuals know how to use sensual persuasion and a fun-loving outlook to keep their partners happy.
Those born on August 5 are able to carry through their decisions with great resolve, steadfastness and determination. Although those born on this day may be of an emotional nature, they display a remarkable mastery over their feelings, and accomplish their ends in a natural and easy fashion. But though August 5 people maintain a cool and unflappable exterior, it is not as easy as it looks for them to do so: indeed it can be a bit like sitting on a volcano. Most born on this day discover at some point that their level of success is in direct proportion to their ability to control and direct their mental energy and to stay on an even keel. Although most August 5 people are mentally oriented, there is no denying the tremendous physical prowess granted to these gifted people. Such natural advantages may be squandered or misused, however, if their willpower is lacking. A tendency toward violence that so often accompanies this day must be sublimated into creative endeavors, particularly in the case of August 5 males. In fact, the aggressions of August 5 people in general should be directed at an early age into competitive sports and physical activities of all kinds. Chess, video, card and word games may serve as an outlet for their combative tendencies. When August 5 people explode in anger, it is not at all pleasant to watch; it is worse yet to be the target of their rage. Usually, however, the more highly evolved born on this day become aware of the damage, both physical and psychological, that their anger inflicts, and evolve to a higher state of consciousness in their thirties or forties, at which time they begin to show more consideration of others. Particularly in friendships and romance, those born on this day may suffer for many years before learning how to relate to loved ones in a truly caring way. August 5 people need the freedom to act quickly, to carry out decisions without constraint. Therefore, they must always retain a measure of independence and individual initiative even in a company or group setting. This is not to suggest that those born on this day are uncooperative or difficult to work with; it is just that they are happiest when leading— excelling and striving for the common good. Gentleness and kindness ultimately prove very important to the dynamic people born on this day. Perhaps touched by the consideration and generosity of an important figure in their youth, they will so admire that person that they seek to honor or even emulate them. In their early years, August 5 people are usually preoccupied with intense desires and passions but as time passes, realize the importance of affection and begin to express it openly and unashamedly. Always a bit rough around the edges, August 5 people will nonetheless mellow considerably as they approach old age and those who are cantankerous may become quite lovable. The focus and steely determination people born on August 5 are blessed with, combined with their ability to keep their cool, instills in others a sense of admiration. This often turns to awe when their resolute sense of purpose, striking originality and incredible energy help them achieve their goals. These people dream big dreams, but what makes them stand out is that they are prepared to give everything they have to make these dreams happen. At their happiest and best they are natural optimists and, although their lack of caution can lead them into trouble, they have no problems taking calculated risks or betting against the odds. Not surprisingly their fixity of purpose can antagonize others, but criticism rarely deters them, rather energizing them and spurring them on to prove everybody wrong. They have the potential to achieve success in any sphere that holds their interest; but more often than not underneath their impressive self-discipline there are intense and powerful emotions which, if they are crossed in any way, can explode in dramatic outbursts of temper. The volatile tendency that is characteristic of these people can be unsettling to those around them, and it is important for them to be gentler with both themselves and others. After the age of seventeen, and for the next thirty years, there is an increased need for practical order and stability in their lives and they will be more inclined to analyze things practically and look for ways to reshape their lives. The key to their success during these years will be to ease up a little on the expectations they place on both themselves and others. After the age of forty-seven there is a turning point which emphasizes the growing importance of relationships, creativity and harmony. Throughout their lives it is important for these strong and determined personalities to learn to trust rather than repress their feelings. This is because working with their intuition will help them build up the confidence and faith they need to achieve their inspired dreams. People born on August 5 are often very attractive to others because of their charm, sensuality and optimism, but they can be restless and indecisive about close relationships. Once in a relationship they are loyal and passionate lovers but also a bit controlling. They need to be careful not to become too bossy, understanding that their partner’s dreams may not be the same as theirs. People born on this day should be careful not to focus on outer health to the neglect of their emotions or inner health. Generally they are fairly good at making sure they eat healthily and stay in shape, but less good at getting in touch with their feelings and those of others, despite the cool face they present to the world. Emotional confusion can lead to all kinds of health problems from the psychological—stress and depression—to the physical—lowered immunity, fatigue and hormonal imbalances. They should therefore find ways to ease their inner tension, such as meditation, breathing exercises or other stress-management techniques such as spending more time with family and friends, listening to music or pampering themselves. As far as diet is concerned, they should aim for healthy food, steering clear of foods high in salt, sugar, saturated fat, additives, and preservatives. Vigorous exercise that helps them release pent-up emotions is also recommended, as is wearing, meditating on or surrounding themselves with the color green. The need to act autonomously that characterizes these people suits them to careers in music and film-making as well as to scientific, social or even philosophical innovations. Always aware of their image, they may also be attracted to the theater or the entertainment world. Other career choices that might appeal include law, sales, business, and working for themselves. The life path of people born on this day is to learn to value simple acts of kindness and affection. Once they have learned to manage their emotions positively, their destiny is to use their fierce determination to become impressive agents of change. People born specifically on the 5th of August are believed to be adventurous and self assured but also less demanding and pushy than most Lions. The ruling astrological planet selected for this particular day is Mercury directing you to be diplomatic and enthusiastic about challenges. If you have this birthday a high intellect makes you great at solving problems and is the perfect accompaniment to your excellent communication skills. Fiery but courteous, warm, generous and friendly you are naturally sympathetic with a wonderful sense of humor and style. Ambitious and determined you are also charming in your manner and fun loving. Helpful without expecting anything in return you are usually honorable with a humanitarian logical approach and outlook. Individuals with an August the fifth birthday are highly sociable, outgoing and creative but they tend to dislike solitude and can be sometimes argumentative and opinionated. Career choices must usually include plenty of mental stimulation and satisfaction to be deemed attractive and suitable to a person born on the fifth of August. Favorite occupations are likely to be anything that utilizes your strong ability to communicate and this often includes computer based jobs. Your diplomacy, enthusiasm, sociability and helpfulness can also direct your options and are great assets in any working environment. A usual common sense attitude to finances and the importance of budgeting is once in a while disturbed by your natural generosity and sympathy towards others. For a Leo, the person born on the fifth day of August is typically someone who falls in love easily but tends to struggle with long term commitment. You will usually put your heart and soul into romance to satisfy your craving for attention and affection. However you also need a certain amount of personal space and have a very low tolerance of any form of deceit or unfaithfulness. An intellectual rapport and extra close companionship are often more important to you as a passionate physical side to the relationship. An exciting, playful and thoughtful lover you can be curiously mischievous and fun between the sheets. You yearn for a spirited soul mate and could frequently team up with somebody who was formally just a friend. They should help you laugh and relax as well as share your craving for a harmonious comfortable lifestyle. Lack of exercise is rarely linked to illness experienced by those born on August 5th due to your slight obsession to stay active physically. This fondness of constant activity comes along with a mental proneness to be highly strung and find it quite difficult to slow down every now and again for relaxation. The effective dispelling of your plentitude of nervy energy is commonly the key to preserving your everyday healthiness. People born on this day often have a habit of regularly choosing convenience over nutritional values with food selections occasionally jeopardizing health. Your main strengths of character are demonstrated in the direct, dignified and unflappable disposition you possess. These favorable traits ordinarily present you as sensible, confident, mature and responsible. Alongside these positive fortes your warmth, friendliness, dependability and fairly balanced emotions earn you a reputation for being a nice, reliable and supportive companion. The personality weaknesses for those born on August 5th focus on your negative tendencies to act in either a cantankerous loud or quiet sulky repressed way, more frequent if you are not eating or sleeping properly. Being born on the 5th of August usually gifts you with the eagerness to inspire and assist others when it comes to accomplishing goals. Personally it is common for you to have too many aspirations and sometimes experience issues focusing your energies. A touch of impatience may prove to be an additional barrier to achievement if you should unintentionally or temporarily succumb to it. You are disposed to give equal priority and effort to in your attempt to achieve professional and private ambitions. Dreams have a likelihood to feature some possible solutions to anything that is currently worrying you. As you were born on the fifth day of the month your birth date generates an allotted Root number of Five. This numerical reference to your birthday has the keyword 'Inquiry' placing emphasis on your liking for social company and conversing. In the Major Arcana Tarot the 5th card representing the Hierophant is closely associated with your birthday. This expresses your abilities to learn by word or example and tells you to always trust your instincts. The lucky gemstone for August the fifth birthdays is a Diamond to be worn for its calming properties plus a potential boost to patience and wealth. The Sun's influence astrologically is thought to help predict the probable basic personalities of all Leo's. The actual day you were born on, the fifth of August is ruled over by the celestial body Mercury's influential power. These 2 planets are therefore imagined responsible for some of your differences from your Lion symboled counterparts. Your pleasant tactfulness and compassion allow you to offer genuine, unselfish and well meant assistance to others. Your stylish charm and creativity are useful resources and together with your determination and inclination to use logic should carry you far in life. If you can pay more attention to taking care of yourself it could avert distractions and interruptions to your future plans. A final contemplative thought especially for people born on August the 5th is to value kindness and loosen up a bit on your requests and stipulations on yourself and loved ones. Even though you are generally not as attention seeking or egotistical as your zodiacal equals, following this advice could possibly decrease stress levels and leave you a tad more relaxed.
#50. Moses Thiessen (Birthday: May 5, 1999 – The Day Of Practical Awakening; Personality Period: Taurus II – May 3 to May 10 – The Week Of The Teacher; Place Of Birth: Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada)
Those born during the Week of the Teacher are mainly involved in the development of ideas and techniques. No matter what their vocation or avocation, they have a message to share. Verbalizing their ideas and observations, generating discussion, and leading by example are all favorite activities of theirs. It can be said that they have a calling for imparting information and, more importantly, presenting it in a manner that others can understand. It is not surprising that they have a strong need for teacher-student–type interactions. They intuitively sense that teacher and student are two sides of the same coin, and that this coin is one they wish to invest in their future. They generally do well enough at school, but fare best as students or teachers in one-on-one learning or small group situations such as in dance, music, sports and the visual arts. For them, being a good student is the first step toward becoming a good teacher. They also know the value of learning on one’s own and, instead of binding students to them, will encourage them to teach themselves. They are movers and shakers, and, since they rarely deal with flighty or superficial topics, they are capable of influencing others. Part of the key to this lies in the fact that they live so much of their lives in the realm of ideas, of ideologies. Excellent entrepreneurs, they can set up both businesses and families without an excessive need to dominate or impose an inflexible structure on those with whom they live and work. They do, however, often establish lines that should not be crossed. These people are very interested in the living conditions of those around them, and particularly in social groups that are foreign to them. How and where others live, work, play, eat, worship, vote and exercise has enormous fascination for these people, who also tend side with the underdog and to feel all forms of unfairness and discrimination keenly. Not surprisingly, interracial or cross-cultural relationships are common. Similarly, older Week of the Teacher folks may be attracted to younger people and younger ones to those much older than themselves. The moral stance of the these individuals is usually strong, even unyielding. They have firm ideas about right and wrong, which they do not hesitate to express. Although you probably wouldn’t call them straitlaced, they may exhibit prudish or even puritanical tendencies, particularly when young. And such early tendencies, even though outgrown, may surface in times of stress when they are adults, much to the surprise of those who know them as free-thinkers. The area in which the ethical orientation of these people is most unequivocal is their insistence on fairness. One might say, in fact, that they are obsessed with injustice, prejudice and discrimination in all forms. Their reaction to any form of racism is scathing, uncompromising and immediate. Actually, anger may erupt suddenly in almost any area of their lives, and they must learn how to handle their upset feelings in healthy ways without suppressing them. Physical activity, whether sports, dance, music, or fitness training, comes naturally to these folks, yet they do not convey the impression of being earthy, sensuous types. They generally create a strong first impression, and make a heavy impact on their environment, but this may be due more to their mental qualities than to their physical ones. Even those of a small or average body type often project an image far greater than their actual size on first meeting. Although excellent bosses, parents and teachers, they are not always the easiest people to be involved with day-to-day as mate, lover or friend. Demanding and critical, they make their dislikes known sharply and incisively, often alienating or insulting those of a softer or more sensitive disposition. Their insistence that people be hard and tough, able to take the truth in a straight dose, is not everyone’s cup of tea. When they become happier and more comfortable with themselves, and as they grow older, many of their critical characteristics will mellow or even disappear. With their love of beauty and their great charm and personal magnetism, these individuals often have a host of admirers. They are not really comfortable with a great deal of attention, however, and do not like finding themselves imprisoned in a social circle of their own making. At such times they have little choice but to withdraw into a more isolated existence. The more successful of them therefore learn to control their own attractive powers and to create fewer problems for themselves. Those who relate best to those born during the Week of the Teacher in personal relationships are those who understand their need to be left alone rather than being fussed over or spoiled. These folks prefer their mates to show their enthusiasm for the relationship simply by upholding their share of it rather than by displays of gratitude or affection. In intimate situations, they can be extremely passionate, but in their everyday routine they insist on a certain distance. They prefer romance to sentimentality, but like a realistic and frank approach to love and sex even better. They do not generally react well to others’ requests for attention or affection, even when those others are intimates; anything that looks like pleading or begging usually turns them off completely. They like their partners to be strong and dignified above all.
Those born on May 5 often regard it as their particular mission to educate and enlighten others. No matter how humble their station, they can offer valuable advice as to how life can be bettered. In doing so, they may at times arouse resentment through what is taken for meddling. Later, however, others often come to realize just how relevant such suggestions indeed were. The intellect of May 5 people is well developed, but rarely applied to hypotheticals, or sophistry for its own sake. It is only in applied theories, in practical thinking, that those born on this day see the real meaning of their work. A great challenge for May 5 people, because of their stubbornness of conviction, is to admit when they are wrong. Their success will often be measured by their capacity to start over again at square one after a setback or defeat. Friends and family may at times feel constrained by May 5 people’s preconceptions of their behavior. Everyone likes to be appreciated for their qualities as an individual, a fact that some May 5 people overlook. Those born on this day should try to allow for the imperfections, eccentricities and special needs of their loved ones. As parents they must take particular care that their children feel sufficiently loved for who they are, not just for who they could potentially be. Because every speaker needs an audience, the most tragic thing that can happen to a May 5 person is to be ignored. Those born on this day strive to avoid this situation at all costs. Consequently, in less highly evolved May 5 people, too little time is spent in the preparation and thinking through of ideas and too much time in the selling of them. Indeed, people born on this day know how to sell themselves. The theme of awakening figures prominently in the lives of May 5 people. They strive to arouse and motivate, to alert others to important truths by stripping away the veils of illusion. Whether they urge those around them to defend themselves, revolt or simply better their daily lives in small ways, the May 5 message is a trumpet call to action. Those born on this day simply cannot suffer ignorance or lack of awareness in others, whether family, friends or colleagues. May 5 people can be jealously protective of their role as educator or role model and highly competitive with those who would usurp their position. They should avoid overt aggression against rivals, for this behavior will alienate allies and supporters as well. Acceptance is very difficult for those born on May 5 to cultivate, particularly acceptance for the egregious sins of vegetative behavior. But on the other hand, those born on this day may exercise great patience when they feel that improvement, no matter how gradual, is taking hold. People born on May 5 are often full of original and innovative solutions, and know the best way to implement them. Others rely on them to offer ideas when things have ground to a halt or to inject their special brand of motivating energy. They have enough energy for everyone and, unless they feel undermined or threatened, they never seem to tire. They have excellent communication skills and the ability to impart knowledge or insight to others. This isn’t to say they are know-alls; it is just that they love nothing better than to motivate and inspire others toward action. They do this by getting to the heart of the matter; in some cases this may involve pointing out some uncomfortable home truths. Their aim is not to wound but to help others progress, although their interpersonal skills might improve if they learned the importance of listening a bit more. They may find it hard to sit back when they witness a lack of awareness in others, and will quickly assume the role of parent or mentor. They do take this role extremely seriously and, if it is threatened in any way, they can become jealous, manipulative and aggressive. They should learn to be less possessive and more accepting of the need of others to make their own mistakes, especially between the ages of sixteen to forty-six during which there is an emphasis in their lives on communication in all forms. After the age of forty-six they may become more sensitive toward their own feelings and the feelings of others.Hidden beneath the knowledgeable but practical exterior of these people there is a highly idealistic individual. To stop them becoming overly serious, they need to learn to use their unusual sense of humor; to feel more fulfilled they need to trust more in their instincts. This sense of their own power will give them the self-confidence and spontaneity they need to focus their energy not just on guiding others but on motivating themselves to express and develop their own highly creative potential. For people born on May 5 the love and support of a partner mean everything, and they will do whatever it takes to keep a relationship alive. They are not afraid of commitment, romance or sentiment, but do need to be careful that they don’t see their partner as an extension of themselves. Their ideal partner will share their sense of commitment. The greatest risk to the health of people born on this day is their tendency to go overboard in one area of their life, be it diet, exercise, sex, or work. They need to find ways to balance their incredible energy and to make sure that their lives are structured. As far as diet is concerned, they may have a sweet tooth and will need to make sure they limit their intake of sugar and refined and processed foods. #51. Malcolm Stewart (Birthday: May 15, 1948 – The Day Of The Dreamweavers; Personality Period: Taurus III – May 11 to May 18 – The Week Of The Natural; Place Of Birth: Montreal, Quebec, Canada)
Those born during the Week of the Natural are highly sensitive individuals who need to be left free to express themselves as directly and naturally as they wish. They do not react well when others try to correct, reform or change their basic habits. These spontaneous, fun-loving, zany people insist on being themselves: indeed, they seem to have no other choice. Yet society can put pressures on them to conform, and they may consequently encounter serious frustrations and obstacles while growing up. Nervousness and neurotic behavior not infrequently result and, in more extreme cases, depressions and acutely repressed feelings. A Week of the Natural child, like many adults born this week, is generally fun-loving and imaginative, full of fantastic thoughts and colorful behavior. They are drawn throughout their lives to the natural world, in part due to the freedom it represents. In childhood, problems may arise when a parent, sibling, family member or teacher lacks sympathy for their “wayward” behavior and attempts to straighten it out. They often lack the toughness to resist strong criticism, and they can be deeply hurt by a lack of understanding from those close to them. In the long run, however, they may also benefit from any resistance to them, becoming stronger and more capable of dealing with a hostile and critical environment. Leaving home and getting out on their own come early in the life of these people, and even those who seem docile and content often secretly yearn for the time when they can exert their independence. As they grow up, they succeed in finding friends who appreciate them, and rarely will they carry hurtful or revengeful thoughts against childhood adversaries into adulthood. However, they may well retain some scars from childhood battles that, if repressed, can lead to sudden and baffling depressions or emotional outbursts. It is hard for them to keep a low profile. Craving action and excitement, and often unable to keep their strong opinions on those around them to themselves, they can easily get into hot water. They can be very emotionally volatile, and easily bored—qualities that invariably lead to many changes of friends, lovers and generally of their entire scene. An eternal fascination with the oddball, unusual aspects of life will always threaten to remove them from steadier and more stable situations and individuals. On the other hand, their instability can make them crave the grounding influence of people, places and professions, and for varying periods of time they may doggedly hold on, knowing that to let go could result in aimlessness and lack of direction. This duality between a natural impulsiveness and a need for stability (often a result of a fear of their own unsettledness) can be the key factor in all of the adult relationships of these folks. Although insecurities abound in their personalities, these can act as a powerful fuel for their drive to succeed in life, rise in their jobs and break through societal barriers. In this sense, paradoxically, their dynamism can itself become a stabilizing force, and their ambition both a rock they can hold to and a compass pointing the way. Thus many of them who might have been satisfied with an enjoyable, unstressed, easygoing life, and better suited to it as well, are driven upward by their own quest for security, frequently a goal involving financial independence. They are, above all, people who create their own challenges. Although one would imagine that adventure, sex, drugs and all forms of wild behavior would exert a powerful pull on these folks (as they inevitably do at some point in these individuals’ lives), they are not invariably prone to lifelong obsessions and addictions. They are supported not so much by their good sense as by an understanding of the basic nature of these areas of behavior, and this kind of kinship or familiarity allows them to navigate perilous channels without foundering on the rocks. In relationships, rebelliousness against authority can haunt them their whole life long. Those who enter into relationships with them, moreover, particularly their mates and lovers, risk coming to symbolize for them the repressive forces that they cannot abide. It is essential, then, to be understanding of the battles being waged in the psyche of these people, while at the same time refusing to become a football or emotional punching bag. Difficulties may particularly surface when they want others to take them seriously—their combination of fantastic ideas and unpredictable behavior is not always conducive to inspiring trust, and they may have to battle long and hard before their ideas are accepted. Still, as with their drive to financial success, fighting over issues like these can give them direction and security. Successful are those who are able to give form to their fantasy, to embody it in a product, service or artistic activity. Such individuals can strike deep responsive chords in the imaginations of their fellows, who may feel they live in a more humdrum world from which they secretly crave release. In the same way, those born during the Week of the Natural may draw others to them as friends and lovers.
In a very natural manner, May 15 people are able to exemplify what those around them are unconsciously striving to attain. Consequently, others may be attracted to those born on this day without really knowing why. May 15 people may also be surprised by such attention, as they themselves are often unaware of their magnetism. They simply have a gift for quietly and unostentatiously touching the hearts of their family, friends or colleagues. One reason that those born on this day do not draw great attention to themselves is that on first glance they do not seem to be doing anything so much out of the ordinary, and their outward appearance does not particularly set them apart. The charm of May 15 people may not be immediately apparent, but it is generally after some time has passed that those involved with them come to realize their power. The materials that May 15 people work with come from everyday life, but those born on this day have a remarkable talent for putting these mundane materials through a kind of creative alchemy and weaving a resultant tapestry which touches one’s inner core. They do not touch everyone so deeply; only those who are tuned in to their wave length are so powerfully affected. May 15 people are often loners. They are capable of working ordinary jobs in the daytime while exploring more unusual interests after work and on weekends. Sometimes their immersion in private worlds can cut them off from their fellow human beings and cause quite serious psychic problems. Those born on this day should always be encouraged to express themselves, perhaps first sharing their ideas or projects with a few intimates, later emerging to present them in a more public setting. The ultimate goal is, of course, that they be able to spend the greater part of their time doing what they love best. Unfortunately, since they are rarely aggressive, they may choose not to emerge at all, and the few admirers they have may wind up supporting them emotionally or even financially; this can become a real problem for everyone concerned. May 15 people must sooner or later step out on their own, assume responsibility for their talents and seek to further their careers. Their ability to please can then be put to work in a wider social context, instead of just getting bottled up in personal frustration. May 15 people generally feel that many quiet years of training are necessary to establish one’s own inner discipline, because it is most important not to lead others astray once successful. Those born on this day are thus loathe to seek positions of power until they have first fully prepared themselves and paid their dues while forming ideas and attitudes which can have such an impact on other people. People born on May 15 are blessed with intelligence, charm and a rich and powerful imagination. Young at heart, they have the ability to touch the hearts and minds of all those lucky enough to wander across their path. What makes people born on this day so special is their creativity. They are the ones with the brightest solutions or magical ideas and when they are around the world always seems a fresher and more colorful place. They often live in their dreams, so their plans frequently come to nothing while they are sitting back expecting others to come forward or to seek their advice. At work they may see a way forward but they are unlikely to volunteer this information to their boss unless asked for it; in their personal life they may expect others to make the first move. It is important for them to put themselves forward and take responsibility for their creativity and talent, because this is the only way they will be able to reach their potential and fulfill their dreams. From about the age of six to the age of thirty-six, there is an emphasis on education, communication and new interests; this is one of the reasons why their imaginative faculties are so advanced and why they may opt to stay in school longer or train longer than others. Around the age of thirty-six, however, home and family life present opportunities for them to shake off their passivity and become more confident of themselves and their abilities. They are often seen by others as being rather otherworldly or living in a world of their own; in many respects this assumption is correct as they do have an irresistible urge to acquire knowledge, oftentimes mystical knowledge. Despite the dreamy image they present, once they learn to take responsibility for their talents they are rarely isolated from others. This is because others will always be drawn to their capacity to present the inspirational fruits of their mental adventures and, by so doing, bring great happiness and illumination to the world. People born on May 15 are never short of admirers but they may miss out on opportunities for romance because they are reluctant to make the first move. Once in a relationship they also need to guard against passivity and should try to take the initiative more, especially when it comes to showing affection; their undemonstrative nature may be interpreted by others as indifference. People born on this day need to avoid isolating themselves from social contact. All activities that bring them out of themselves should be encouraged, as should spending more time with friends and loved ones. Exercise is highly recommended, especially activities that involve social contact, such as dancing, aerobics and team sports. As far as diet is concerned, they have a tendency to overindulge in foods they enjoy. One of the best ways to counteract this is to make sure that boredom and loneliness are not the real causes of their overeating. The same applies to sex and drugs, in which they may also be tempted to indulge. Addiction of any kind is extremely negative and unhealthy for them, so if they can’t fight it alone they need to seek help from their doctor or a counselor. Wearing, meditating on or surrounding themselves with the color orange will encourage them to feel warmer and more secure in the company of others. These people have the potential to inspire others and succeed in just about every career, from scientific research to business to something more artistic and creative. They may also choose to work from home or devote themselves to web design, finance or accountancy. Their birthday shows excellent work opportunities and a strong awareness of responsibility, but they need to guard against becoming stuck in a job that does not fulfill them. #52. Sam Witwer (Birthday: Oct. 20, 1977 – The Day Of Vogue; Personality Period: Libra-Scorpio Cusp – Oct. 19 to Oct. 25 – The Cusp Of Drama & Criticism; Place Of Birth: Glenview, Illinois, United States)
Big personalities, those born during the Week of Drama & Criticism may prove too much for anyone to handle. Their influence can not only dominate their immediate circle but go far beyond it; that influence is surely personal, for these are charismatic individuals, but also often intellectual, since their ideas are well thought out and highly developed. These people usually have something to say on almost any subject. Their penchant for preaching from the pulpit makes them well suited to be teachers, whether professionally or informally, and their students usually come to depend heavily on them for guidance. They meld mental and emotional characteristics—not always an easy task. These two aspects of their personality are often at war, with the head guiding and the heart denying, or viceversa. They can get into a real mess with themselves when their intellectual and emotional natures clash. Periods of indecision may be broken by outbursts of aggression, and self-assured determination and control may be undermined by procrastination and love of repose. The tensions and disappointments of life can at times prove too much for them, such that they retreat into isolation. Thus they benefit from physical exercise, fitness training, sound diets and all activities that promote healthy contact with the world and relationships and activities that lessen their tendency to isolate themselves from the world or will prove beneficial to them. Their mental orientation appears in their perceptiveness and sharp insightfulness. The twin dangers here are a sense of personal infallibility and a tendency to be overcritical; their disapproving or denigrating attitudes can hurt those close to them, undermining their confidence in subtle ways. Their intimates may have to fight back against such negative expectations and predictions, not just to protect but to liberate themselves. They should seriously think about the possibility of learning to back off, and of not only keeping their opinions to themselves but in many cases letting go of them completely. These people have a decidedly modern approach in most areas, but also shelter an undeniable sense of tradition. This is particularly clear in their devotion to parents and children, in whose lives they play a large role–sometimes too large. Not that they too easily accept the values of their parents—far from it—their attachment is more emotional. After a stormy and rebellious adolescence, they often return to an extremely close relationship with their parents in later life. As responsible as many of these people seem in many areas of everyday life, they have an undeniably wild, unpredictable side. Dramatic and impulsive, they will unhesitatingly fly in the face of society’s moral codes to assert their values or express themselves, which they can do both cogently and flamboyantly. Even the mildest of these folks have an exhibitionistic side, and want and need others to take notice of them. Their private lives may include many love affairs, charting a path strewn with the broken hearts of those who have had relationships with them. Their particular brand of charisma, impulsiveness and mental power makes them formidable and sometimes even dangerous individuals to be involved with. Sensuousness and passion are important themes in their lives. In their relationships with others, however, they may exhibit a split between these two areas, treating sexuality quite differently from sensuality, and basing a relationship squarely on either one or the other, and only rarely on both. They express their sensuousness in their love of the beautiful and tasteful objects with which they surround themselves, or in an appreciation of art, music and literature. Those romantically involved with them must beware of addictive tendencies in such relationships. Unduly deep attachments that go beyond usual or even healthy limits may result in debilitating dependencies and painful partings and breakups, even in symptoms resembling drug withdrawal. The most successful type of this personality is able to structure relationships so that both parties have their own space and retain their identities; less successful ones may be fated to experience a painful string of failed relationships. A combination of deep love and friendship in a marriage with one of them is possible, however, and such a bond will overcome almost any difficulties that may arise. With children, whether their own or those of other family members or friends, those born during the Week of Drama & Criticism take seriously the role of responsible adult guide, but can lose their objectivity and wind up getting too emotionally involved. These folks must learn to be respectful of children, students and other young people, and to realize how damaging their feelings and desires, and perhaps their unrealistic expectations, may prove.
Those born on October 20 are very conscious of what is in and what is out at any given time. Often their influence is so great that they can even define certain social trends themselves, but just as often may find themselves at odds with the prevailing social standard or fashion. Their drive to be not only accepted but also influential in their social milieu is very strong. Therefore, in this arena rejection hits them hard, and setbacks, difficulties or delays can dampen their spirit. October 20 people often lead a kind of double life where their career is a money-maker and their “hobby” is where they invest their creative energy. It is not at all uncommon for October 20 people to look very coldly on their principal profession, since romantically their heart takes them elsewhere. Perhaps this, in itself, is one of the main reasons for their success: objectivity and distance seem to work to their advantage. October 20 people generally do well in the material world. They have a good feeling for money and finance, so much so that they can become obsessed with it. They are also extremely competent managers. Paradoxically, those born on this day are vulnerable to physical maladies. Thus, for many October 20 people poor health undermines their material plans by making it difficult for them to function. It seems that the weight of tangible concerns can be a recurring theme in their lives. October 20 people are very hard-headed. Once they make up their minds about something it is hard to stop them from following through. Learning to admit mistakes is an extremely important step in their personal evolution. Fortunately, the October 20 rational capacity is highly developed (accompanied by emotional control), and thus they can be appealed to through reason. If one can show an October 20 person a better way to do something, really demonstrate it, then he/she will eventually adopt it (though probably not right away). Personal appearance counts a lot to October 20 people. Matters of fashion, style, and design are not superficial or trite in their eyes but an expression of individuality. Whether their profession involves these areas directly or not, those born on this day are highly aware of the impression they make on others. Indeed, October 20 people leave an indelible mark on their family, business associates and social circle. People born on October 20 are something of a paradox, with two distinctively different sides to their personality. One side is the quintessential professional who spreads a message of harmony and collaboration. The other side is one of unpredictability, but also great artistry and an appreciation of sensuality, beauty and creativity.Generally, people born on this day find a way to accommodate both sides of their personality, perhaps by pursuing conventional careers and indulging their artistic tastes as a hobby, or by placing an emphasis on matters of personal style. Indeed, their appearance is rarely a trivial concern for them and, however conventional their career choice, they will always find a way to express their individuality through their clothes, hairstyle or fashion sense. The double life that they tend to lead also shows up in the way that they interact with others. They like to think they put the focus on others and are born democrats, but it is only a matter of time before they take center stage or a leadership role—this is the place they were born to be. This isn’t to say they are scheming or insincere. Quite the opposite, they are extremely giving and caring individuals. It is just that their creativity and originality are so powerful it is impossible for them to contain or subordinate them for long.In their twenties they may experience a growing emphasis on emotional change, personal power and regeneration, and they may struggle to find a way to express themselves creatively in their professional life. In their mid to late thirties there is, however, a turning point when they will become more adventurous. These are the years when it is absolutely crucial for them to find ways to reconcile their rational capacity with their creative, often artistic impulses. If they are able to find this delicate balance they will continue to lead a double life; the difference is that it will no longer feel conflicting and complicated, but completely natural and fulfilling. People born on October 20 are charming and stylish individuals who rarely lack admirers. They can come across as fun loving and occasionally lightweight on first acquaintance, but underneath they are forceful and independent. Anyone who enters into a relationship with them will underestimate them at their peril. Their ideal mate will be someone gentle enough to handle them during their sensitive moments, but strong enough to stand up to their forceful personality. People born on this day may find that their desire to please or impress others sometimes takes a higher priority in their lives than their health and wellbeing. As a result they may push themselves too hard and increase the risk of stress, or focus too much on their appearance at the expense of emotional fulfillment. It is important for them to get their priorities right and to remember that their health should always come before anything. Allergies could be a problem for them, as they are often sensitive to their environment. As far as diet is concerned, certain foods may trigger digestive upsets, and an elimination diet will help them determine the cause. Regular exercise is highly recommended to boost their immune systems and also to help them feel more connected to their bodies. Wearing, meditating on and surrounding themselves with the color green will help them find greater balance in their lives and inspire harmony in others. These people are multi-talented and suited to a variety of professions from science to politics, business, art and entertainment. Possible careers include writing, sales, public relations, education, publishing, journalism, counseling, therapy, medicine, commerce, and management. #53. Ross Butler (Birthday: May 17, 1990 – The Day Of The Bottom Line; Personality Period: Taurus III – May 11 to May 18 – The Week Of The Natural; Place Of Birth: Singapore)
They are, above all, people who create their own challenge.
May 17 people have a fundamental approach to life and a desire to get down to basics. Those born on this day are inevitably involved in making simple, though often quite profound statements, be they artistic, economic or political. Their refusal to deal in any unnecessary complexities or compromise their beliefs marks an unusually straightforward approach to life. May 17 people are not noted for their tact; they usually say just what they think—take it or leave it. This attitude is likely to arouse antagonism as well as win support. Although they would seem to be reducing problems by avoiding complications, just the opposite usually happens. Controversy often swirls around them, when what they might prefer is just to be left alone. Those born on this day are not quiet, but neither do they give away a lot about themselves, usually playing their cards close to the vest. It may be difficult to get them to open up emotionally, but if they trust someone they will be quite honest about what they are feeling. This matter of trust is crucial to them, therefore theirs is not won easily. Perhaps May 17 people could be less guarded and more accepting of the good intentions of others. Those born on this day tend to be very proud, however, preferring not to ask help from anyone; they are usually solo players, going it alone in most situations. But though they may not advertise it, they have a deep need for affection, particularly for the emotional support of family and friends. Behind the cool armor of a physically formidable or even forbidding presence, there is an emotional side, which can be tender as a pussycat or wild as a caged tiger itching to break out. Those born on this day particularly should avoid the use of hallucinogenic or mind-expanding drugs which can have the effect of releasing volatile emotions in a most destructive manner. May 17 people may appear fanatical, so great is their zeal for what they do. Their powers of concentration are remarkable, their ability to responsibly produce great, but their health and staying power often fail them in the long run. More highly evolved May 17 individuals will learn to channel their energy in a steady and less highly charged manner, and to be happy and content with themselves. Sometimes those born on May 17 are frustrated with their lot in life, deeply dissatisfied with what they have to do to survive, and come to be filled with resentment over it. They must learn to either accept their situation, even embrace it joyfully, or change their outlook or occupation and move in a different direction. They are less likely to opt for the latter alternative, however, for once they embark on a course they usually see it through to the end, be it bitter or sweet. Simply learning to be happy is probably the greatest single challenge to those born on this day. People born on May 17 have a clear-cut code of personal behavior which guides them through every decision they make. Straightforward and to the point, they have a talent for making simple but profound comments on situations. With little time for small talk, they say what they mean and mean what they say. They are an inspiring example to others but don’t have much patience with those who try to shirk their responsibilities; if they notice someone slacking or not pulling their weight, they are likely to tell them straight out. This clear-cut approach can, unfortunately, win them as many enemies as supporters and so they might benefit from learning more tact. Their insightful and original approach, combined with their refusal to be diverted from their chosen course, would appear to be a recipe for success. Where this is not the case it is because they have a tendency to overestimate the power of what they can achieve through determination and will-power alone. They often prefer to go it alone, but if this works against them they should recognize the power of a group of people working together to achieve a goal.Until their mid thirties there is an emphasis in their lives on learning in all its forms and they need to take advantage of these opportunities to communicate and exchange ideas with others. After the age of thirty-four they may focus more on emotional intimacy and security. If they can learn to get in touch with their own feelings and the feelings of others during this period, it promises great fulfillment and happiness. There is no denying that these people often have fixed views on things. This can hold them back as life is not as black and white as they think it is. However, if they learn to develop a more tolerant approach it will not only help them achieve their aims and attract a following, it will also open up within them the compassion and determination to improve the lives of others and a creativity that might otherwise have remained dormant. People born on May 17 value personality, integrity and a strong will over good looks, and would rather be alone than with someone they can’t respect. Although they may try to suppress it, they have an extremely sensual nature and a voracious romantic drive; releasing some of that energy into a committed relationship will help mellow and soften them. People born on this day are extraordinarily determined and at times this can make them drive themselves too hard and become prone to headaches or digestive upsets. Ideally they should surround themselves with close friends and loved ones who can encourage them to relax and unwind. Those who find themselves alone might find training and owning a dog extremely beneficial. As far as diet and lifestyle are concerned, they should stay away from drugs and alcohol as their body is extremely sensitive to toxins of any kind. Moderate to mild exercise, especially brisk walking, is encouraged to help them blow away the cobwebs, keep their weight under control and boost their immune system. Wearing, meditating on or surrounding themselves with the color orange will encourage them to be warm and open in the company of others. People born on this day have the creativity and focus to excel in the world of art and music. Alternatively education, science, research, and law, as well as working for themselves, may appeal. Once they appreciate the importance of working cooperatively with others, they may be drawn toward sales, promotion, public relations, finance, negotiation, social work, and banking. #54. Juan Riedinger (Birthday: Feb. 27, 1981 – The Day Of The Reality Masters; Personality Period: Pisces I – Feb. 23 to Mar. 2 – The Week Of Spirit; Place Of Birth: Banff, Alberta, Canada)
Those born during the Week of Spirit value the nonmaterial side of life. It’s not that they lack either respect for money-making and business or abilities in these fields. It is simply that, whether engaged in the arts or in finance, in religion or in administration, Week of Spirit people generally approach their work devotionally, elevating it to an idealistic plane. Nor are they without strong physical drives, or a love of the pleasures of the table and the bed. A blend of a spiritual and a sensual approach is at the heart of their personalities. Many of them do not see spirituality as denoting an ascetic approach that would ask them to cut their bonds with the everyday world. On the contrary, since they seek the spirit in everything around them, they rarely feel the need to reject worldly considerations. Spiritedness is also characteristic of these people, who are often lively and entertaining. They have a youthful air that can belie their actual age. Not infrequently, they are also engaged in the personal pursuit of health or are advocates of it. It is important to them to lead a healthy life, so as to increase not only the longevity but the quality of their earthly existence. A desire to do good, in the sense of leaving one’s immediate environment, or the world in general, a bit of a better place at the close of a career or a life, is characteristic of them. Watching environmental mistakes or catastrophes happen, then, may be particularly difficult for these involved, caring individuals. Their devotional and service-oriented side urges them to give up their own wants, making them subservient to their need to give pleasure and benefit to others. As a consequence of this quality, they may easily become the target or prey of more selfish individuals, who see them as an easy touch, and a dependable source of sympathy, energy or money. Making big-hearted offers to others, and then coming to regret or resent these promises, may lead them into arguments and emotional crises. Indeed, sending mixed signals is one of their characteristics. They are prone to feeling hurt when others do not meet their high standards of friendship. In fact, they put such high expectations on their relationships that they set themselves up for unhappiness. They have an intense emotionality that is often difficult for them to control, and that gets them in trouble with others who see things in a more detached or objective way. They are transparent, wearing their hearts on their sleeves and are not particularly good at hiding their feelings, particularly disappointment. In one relationship after another, they can refuse to learn how to protect themselves, or to keep their egos from merging with their love object, no matter how much they swear to do so. For all their humanitarian and empathic qualities, they may tend to imagine themselves on a higher plane than those around them, often without realizing it. This unconscious attitude may keep them from a deeper involvement with others, leading to a somewhat superficial involvement with life, or, worse, to negativity and bitter cynicism toward the world. The know-it-all attitude of some of them is difficult for others to deal with, and can lead to resentment and ultimately rejection in personal relationships. By admitting mistakes, and above all by being open to suggestions and criticism, these philosophical individuals will rise to an even higher personal level in their search for meaning in life. Sharing at a deep level with family and friends is an essential need for these folks—the knack for enjoying the pleasures of life alone is not usually part of their makeup. Unfortunately they are not always successful in their attempts to share, and this can be a source of continued frustration throughout their lives. In their love relationships they often display an emotional instability. Changing partners can become a way of life for them. In fact, what they are really seeking is an ideal, and if they find it they will not hesitate to commit to it in a permanent relationship. One of the biggest problems in their treatment of mates or spouses is backing off emotionally, though they remain loyal and devoted. In turn, they may make demands that others find suffocating; these folks can be a lot to handle. And no matter how much they insist on their belief in mutual independence, or in an “open” marriage or relationship, they can be quite unrealistic in not recognizing their own possessive and jealous nature. Rather than living in a world of expectations, concepts and ideas most of the time, those born during the Week of Spirit would do well to accept the responsibility of simple everyday tasks and chores that will ground them in the here and now. The stability of their relationships will be enhanced if their mates and friends insist that they take on firm responsibilities, even performing mundane, repetitive tasks which are difficult to idealize. Partners who fail in this, perhaps just refusing to rely on them and doing what needs to be done themselves, will simply reinforce their mate’s bad habits: these folks are regretfully prone to walking forgetfully out of the kitchen before the dishes are collected and washed.
Those born on February 27 are extremely insightful into the workings of the world around them. They spend a great deal of energy coming to understand the basic elements of everyday life—how things work, why people act the way they do, how to work to advantage with the environment—but this is only the beginning. From this solid reality base, February 27 people allow their questioning spirits to explore outward to social, international and universal spheres as well. Because they build solidly at each step of the way, they can confidently count on the wisdom they have culled from experience to see them through new and perhaps increasingly ambitious endeavors. The greatest difficulties for February 27 people usually surface in their personal lives. Because they are extremely demanding individuals, and also since their intuitive choices in relationships are often not the most suitable for them to say the least, they can have tumultuous and often chaotic love lives. For some reason, for all of their understanding of the world and their capacity to make their way in it, they often know surprisingly little about themselves, other than what they think they want. To learn the difference between what they want and what they truly need is an important distinction for them to grasp and one which they hopefully make sooner rather than later in life. By satisfying their true needs they can, of course, find greater emotional stability and happiness. Too often they feel that their problems can be solved by another person, and put much too much energy into their romantic love lives, instead of seeking the solutions to their needs at a deeper level inside themselves. Given their emotional makeup, it is unlikely that those born on this day will experience much “downtime” between relationships, but an extended period alone could actually do them some good. Because of their thoughtful and sensitive nature, they should be able to accomplish much personal growth without outside help. February 27 people are happiest when they can let their minds roam freely over a wide variety of subjects, and generally demand friends and mates who are also intellectually active. Those born on this day often struggle with their social environment in an attempt to somehow master it or perhaps redirect it. Their urge to dominate is very strong and because their magnetic powers are among the strongest in the entire year, they must be extremely careful not to overwhelm everyone around them. If February 27 people lose moral direction they have a great potential for bringing destruction on themselves and others. Their capacity for not only seeing the truth but also bringing what they desire to pass, through a rare combination of empathy and willpower, presents them with great ethical and moral challenges. People born on February 27 have the ability to turn heads and win hearts wherever they go. There is a magnetic and striking intensity about them that can hold others spellbound. These people like to be in the limelight, and sooner or later they will be. Others admire them, not just for their hypnotic personality but because they stride confidently and with purpose through life, achieving their goals with ease and grace. They have a mind forever open to the new but they are also able to analyze in depth. By devoting a great deal of their energy to understanding how things work, their knowledge base increases steadily until it becomes so solid that it can see them through from one ambitious project to the next, taking them to the very top. There is one area of their lives, however, unlikely to be envied by others: their personal lives.Although this may appear contradictory—given their cool and charismatic image—February 27 people often have a chaotic emotional life, with broken relationships littered around them. The reason is that they have a deeply emotional nature; although they have learned to control it when it comes to impersonal relationships, their own personal relationships are threatened by their impulse to follow their heart. It is extremely important for people born on this day to apply discipline to personal relationships and to stop making unreasonable, childish demands on others, especially between the ages of twenty-three and fifty-two when they will become even more active and adventurous. If self-discipline isn’t learned during this period, the result could be emotional and personal chaos. At their worst, people born on this day can be social-climbing attention seekers. At their best, however, they are lovable and spontaneous creatures who can both intoxicate and inspire others with their presence. They may often be described as a little crazy by those who know them, but once they invest their energy into a worthwhile cause they can achieve great things and enjoy the limelight they seem destined for. People born on February 27 expect total commitment and support from others but need to learn to give it in return. They can be incredibly inconsistent lovers and those in a relationship with them will need to learn how to avoid head-on confrontations. When they do finally feel able to commit to a relationship, however, they can be spontaneous, passionate and vulnerable lovers; a little high maintenance, perhaps, but well worth the effort. People born on this day are full of energy and so a vigorous exercise program is recommended to prevent them working off their energy or seeking a high in an unhealthy direction, such as chasing numerous sexual partners, drinking or gambling. As far as diet is concerned, simple and natural is recommended, with reduced amounts of red meat and dairy and saturated fat. They would also benefit from breathing exercises, meditation and yoga to help them develop the self-discipline to keep their passions under control. Meditating on, wearing or surrounding themselves with the colors blue and lavender will help them stay cool and logical when passions flare. These people seem destined to be in the limelight, and careers on the stage, in the movies or anywhere where people will be watching them perform in some way have great appeal. If they work in business, they will be attracted to sales, advertising and marketing, but they can also make inspirational teachers and lecturers. They are also ideally suited to life as an entrepreneur and may well find satisfaction in building up their own business. The life path of people born on this day is to learn self-discipline in their personal relationships. Once they have learned to keep their cool, their destiny is to enchant others in some way with their unique brand of magic. People born specifically on the 27th of February are believed to be imaginative, insightful and like a typical Piscean, sensitive and caring. Mars is the ruling astrological planet for this particular day creating your loveable charm, need for variety and bright innovative mind. Individuals with a February the twenty seventh birthday tend to learn quickly from experience and being highly intuitive trust their natural instincts to guide them. Work areas considered attractive to a person born on the twenty seventh of February are often naturally determined. The compassionate and creative parts of your personality are quite predominant and seem to steer you towards professions where they can be expressed. Although you are happiest in these types of jobs, you are capable of any task that is not too humdrum. Individuals with this particular birth date have respect for money and take financial matters seriously. You are generally quite organized with the allocation of your finances taking great care to not live above your means. For a Pisces, the person born on the twenty seventh day of February is untypically not shy and will usually be quietly but openly optimistic about romance. Your rather confident approach is fueled by the belief that we all have a destined soul mate somewhere. This can make you a little too self sacrificing in some personal relationships and the potential to be at times disappointed by love involvements. Despite this enthusiasm for an emotional unification you are sometimes someone who insists on a long courtship before commitment. You are a seductive fish who feels incomplete without a loving relationship yet you rarely make the first move. In a committed partnership a partner is treated to your surprisingly romantic, sensual and spontaneous displays of affection. Extreme loyalty in a relationship is something that is very important to you. Some health problems experienced by those born on February the 27th can be provoked by you neglecting yourself to do more interesting things. You are the sort of person who often cannot get away with skipping meals or sleeping hours too often. Any changes to a regular consistent well being routine may cause minor ailments like skin irritations to appear or a drain in mental energies to occur. People born on this day need to adopt good habits that are suitable for both their lifestyle and tendency to be disturbed by changes. You should try to avoid caffeine or at least restrict its intake to a minimum. Your main strengths of character are within your magnetic appeal, competency and wisdom beyond your years. These qualities and the perceptive imagination and feelings you possess are useful attributes for getting ahead in life. By basing decisions on past events you usually make good ones and are able to stick to them. The primary personality weakness for those born on February 27th is your likelihood to be every now and then oversensitive in your handling of certain situations that may upset you. You can react by acting in a demanding or chaotic manner emotionally so everyone knows you are distressed. Being born on the 27th of February fills you with lots of insightfulness but also fairly high degree of impatience. These characteristics frequently filter through into your future aspirations. It may give you vivid motivational dreams that could have unrealistic time limitations attached. One common goal you are likely to set for yourself is to aspire to help others that are less fortunate and in need of assistance. Understanding your own thoughts, emotions and actions is often a wish that you constantly persue in the hope of becoming a better person along with a desire for inner contentment. As you were born on the twenty seventh day of the month, the 2 and the 7 in your birth date equal a Root number of Nine. This numerical reference to your birthday has the keyword 'Seeker' and it is thought to emphasize your inquisitive inquiring mind and eagerness for knowledge. The Tarot card associated with your birthday is the 9th illustrating the Hermit. This highlights your inclination to be fascinated by the spiritual or unknown and quest for self discovery. The Bloodstone is the gem assumed to be luckiest for February the twenty seventh birthdays and intensifies alertness and calm. Piscean traits are imagined to be mainly astrologically influenced by the dominant presence of the planet Neptune. The actual day you were born on, the twenty seventh of February is presumed governed by the celestial body Mars. So you are gifted with the usual Pisces receptiveness and this planetary combination adds extra confidence and charisma to your collection of probable features. Your considerate optimism and discernment allow you to advance and grow while your sociability and persuasive communication assist you along the way. If you can practice on your unwillingness to wait and be a bit more trustful of your impulses it could speed up your route to the achievements and contentedness you seek. A concluding pertinent thought for people born on February the 27th is to try and not get sidetracked from your aims and stay positively focused. Remember to also bestow some of your kindness on yourself at intervals.

Research topic: Hayao Miyazaki, how his films captured the hearts of generations
Netflix has recently started to offer most of the Studio Ghibli catalog on their streaming platform. I grew up with these films and hold them to a high regard, I decided I would revisit some of my favorites and watch the films I had yet to see. I began by re-watching Porco Rosso followed by Spirited Away, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind and Howl’s Moving Castle. With these nostalgic films fresh in my mind, I will write this essay on none other than their director Hayao Miyazaki, specifically how his work became a nostalgic icon for an entire generation of children and young adults. Hayao Miyazaki in 2012. Hayao Miyazaki was born in 1941 in Tokyo. His family were well-off, their business; an airplane-rudders factory had thrived during the Second World War. His family's involvement with airplanes had a noticeable influence on Miyazaki's work, his interest in planes and vehicles is evident in most of his films, particularly Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind and Porco Rosso. (Greenberg, 2018) Despite his love of cinema and manga, Miyazaki's would not realize his creative passion until age 17 after seeing Hakujaden, or as it was known among English speakers Panda and the Magic Serpent, his creative endeavors began at age 18 when he began drawing manga. It wasn't until 1963 that Miyazaki penetrated the animation industry, being hired by Tōei Animation the same studio that produced Hakujaden. Here he would remain until 1971 (Greenberg, 2018)(Ray,2016) It's evident that Hayao Miyazaki is an exceptional storyteller, director and animator. Only recently in 2020 has Spirited Away, Studio Ghibli's 2001 smash hit been surpassed as Japan's highest grossing film. Why is it that Ghibli films capture the hearts of people and hold onto them for so long? I remember seeing my first Ghibli film when I was five years old, give or take a year; Howl's Moving Castle. My memories of the movie were hazy until re-watching the movie several years later. Despite how much I love this film, as a child it did frighten me, yet I was enthralled by the fantastical designs of each character and particularly the coolness of the castle of which the film gets its name. The moving castle from Howl’s Moving castle. Now at twenty-one, I have watched this film countless times and still find myself easily able to get lost in the hand painted backgrounds, charming characters and intricate details hidden within each scene. I believe the reason these films remain so strongly in our memories are because they are made to be appreciated by both children and adults alike. As a child I could appreciate the cool factor brought by Miyazaki's use of realistic and fantastical vehicles, fascinating creatures, and young, courageous characters whom I could identify with. As an adult, I began to recall scenes and subtext from those films which only began to click as I outgrew my childish innocence, I noticed themes that represent Miyazaki's personal views, his anti-militarism, his sadness at the damage to the natural world. The three main aspects present in most relevant Ghibli films that I believe are responsible for their ability to remain so strongly in our memories are their relatability, subtext, and visual flare. Each of these I will explain thoroughly. Starting with relatability, Ghibli films have something for everyone whether you're a child relating to Chihiro from Spirited Away, feeling insecure and ignored by the adults around you or whether you're a young adult relating to Porco Rosso, jaded and cynical to the powers that be. In an interview with Animage, a Japanese anime and entertainment magazine; in 2001, Miyazaki revealed some of his methods for creating Spirited Away and the motivation that led to its creation. "I have five young female friends who are about the same age as Hiiragi-san*, and I spend every summer with them at my mountain cabin. I wanted to make a movie they could enjoy. That is why I started this film, and that is my true purpose." (Animage, 2001) Chihiro and No-Face from Spirited Away. In this same interview, Miyazaki explains how the themes presented in a lot of films directed towards ten-year-old girls are often about "crushes and romance" which he felt this is not what they were interested in seeing. To better understand the demographic, he was going to make a film for, he read the shoujo manga (manga directed towards young teen girls) left behind at his mountain cabin. (Animage, 2001) Following relatability is subtext. At first glance you might view Ghibli movies as something for children with their quirky characters, bright colors and cartoony designs. This can be a barrier to entry for adults who did not grow up with these movies, but for those who saw a Ghibli film in their childhood they learn as they get older just how much more moral and philosophical depth there is to them. For instance, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. As a child I enjoyed this film for its sense of adventure and the terrifying yet mesmerizing insects, only after re-watching this film recently did I notice the environmental and anti-militarist themes at play. Environmentalism is a theme very present in Miyazaki's work, he himself is a practitioner of Shinto, "indigenous religious beliefs and practices of Japan" (Naofusa, 2020) which puts an emphasis on a natural balance and coexistence with nature. The movie also puts an emphasis on how war and fighting only leads to mutual destruction, two nations in the film are fighting over a man-made weapon which they believe would allow them to save the world, yet their authoritarian approach ends up with both nations destroying each other to be the sole nation in control of said weapon. Manmade “God Warriors” from Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. Finally, visual flare. I doubt anyone could deny the jaw dropping beauty of studio Ghibli films. Miyazaki's dedication is second to none when it comes to ensuring quality in his work, despite modern software and techniques potentially making his films easier to produce he chooses to have the thousands of frames in his films drawn by hand and touched up digitally. (Ebert, 2002) Apart from the beauty presented in the films, nothing quite captures the hearts of young men and boys like the coolness Ghibli brings to the table with their detailed machines and vehicles. Miyazaki had an interest in all things locomotive ever since he was a child, as stated in Hayao Miyazaki : Exploring the Early Work of Japan's Greatest Animator, Miyazaki took great inspiration from Milton Caniff's newspaper adventure strips specifically their "richly detailed designs of exotic landscapes and especially vehicles". (Greenberg, 2018) In conclusion, Hayao Miyazaki and his studio have proven to capture the hearts of countless individuals over the years through their tremendous work ethic and genuine love of storytelling. Whether you are fond of his work or not, you are bound to have been exposed to it and it has undeniably affected the culture and perception of animation as a whole.

Living in New York City had its many perks. For one, it had a little bit of everything nearby—beauty and skincare shops, boutiques, supermarkets, clubs, restaurants, sex shops, bookstores, your favorite tattoo parlor, and more. Everything was within your reach, so you didn’t have to go out of your way to find what you needed. The city was always bustling with people and had an ambiance you thoroughly enjoyed. You found comfort in living in a rowdy neighborhood with people who worked as hard as you, or twice as hard. You admired and felt inspired by the other people of color residing in Washington Heights who worked doggedly day and night to place food on the table and keep a roof over their heads. They, too, admired you for both your work ethic and authenticity, branding you as “That Bitch™ from the block”. Living in the city was fantastic and comforted you in every form possible.
But the summer weather was just ghastly. Well, it was nice, but it didn’t treat your curls nicely. Being outside in the sun for long periods of time was an absolute nuisance and caused heat damage to your dark brown curls, not to mention how frizzy your hair became when you sweat. You didn’t like sweating, not just because it felt unpleasant, but because you couldn’t stand having frizzy hair. The midday sun was cruel to you and you were almost sure you could feel your skin sizzling under the fiery sunlight, although, a nice tan would only further compliment your already brown skin. It was hot, but luckily before stepping out of your apartment to walk your dog, you dressed in a tie front crop top that allowed your fluffy tummy to breathe and a double slit maxi skirt that exposed your chunky legs, which you found refreshing in this heat. You were panty-less and hoped the wind wouldn’t expose the kitty, not that you minded much anyway.
Sitting in the shade on one of Central Park’s metallic benches, your dog nibbling on a snack by your feet, you flipped through the pages of your favorite novel. You didn’t always have the leisure time to read a book. You were a busy woman and ever since joining Big Hit Entertainment, the number of photoshoots you had to take were piling up. Your face, body, and charisma made you popular in the industry, and upon joining Big Hit, you quickly became their best model. Today was one of the few free days you had off, and so you planned on taking full advantage of the day to relax with your baby boy. “Carpe diem”, as they say.
You were busy, but they treated you much better in Big Hit Entertainment than in your previous company, thankfully. However, you knew it was only the beginning of your working at Big Hit, and looks could quite easily be deceiving. Although everyone had treated you with their utmost kindness during your first few weeks at work, it did not necessitate sincerity or mean that this would be routine. You were far too acquainted with this pattern of behavior in various different domains: in the workplace with peers and superiors who treated you cruelly once they obtained what they had wanted from you; in friendships that had eventually ended due to spite and envy towards you and your successes; and in romantic relationships that had ended when you realized men were pretending to love and respect you until they showed their true colors. The men you had dated always thought they were entitled to you, and you hated that more than anything. You refused to let go of your autonomy. You were your own person and you knew you were top tier shit. The men you had dated felt their masculinity was threatened because you refused to submit to them and cater to their every whim. That was why you only stuck to sexual relationships—you preferred not having any strings attached in order to avoid the feelings of ill-founded entitlement that would ensue on their part. It was a good thing that you had a keen eye for people and a strong intuition; you were highly observant and analytical, so you were quick in identifying scum.
Ultimately, presentation in first impressions are not always genuine, which is why you felt it was important to demonstrate what kind of person you were from the get-go. You weren’t going to act like someone you were not just to gain someone’s approval—they either wanted to be acquainted with you or they did not. It was that simple. You were a boss ass bitch, so you wanted others to know this as well and to not take you lightly.
An excited howl startled you out of your thoughts. It was your dog who had seen something of interest and quickly approached the source of his excitation. You got up to control your dog who had scampered off to bark at another toy poodle who was almost identical to him, except it was chocolate brown while your dog was milky white. You noticed the opposing dog was frightened by your dog’s sudden outburst, so you crouched down to tame yours.
“Leche, relax.” You scratched the top of his small head, just the way he liked it, yet he continued trying to sniff at his brown counterpart.
“It’s fine. Holly is just shy with other dogs.” The voice was familiar; it was one you recognized best from radio and television, and on one occasion, at a party.
You stood to your normal height to acknowledge the dog’s owner and the source of the voice.
“Suga.”
“Y/N.”
Yoongi had recognized your curly head from afar. He had been walking his own dog in Central Park when he spotted you. Your curly hair cascaded down your face as you looked down at your novel. Not to sound like a cringy romantic, but Yoongi thought the bit of sunlight reflecting onto your face and the wisps of your curls made your dazzling brown figure glow in ways that seemed surreal.
He wasn’t sure if he should approach you and interrupt you while you had your nose deep in a book. So instead, he stood from a distance, admiring your beauty and leaving you at peace. That is until Holly had begun walking once again after relieving himself by the bushes and approached your dog first out of curiosity.
“Long time no see,” you smiled at him, which he returned. “Is this your dog? Can I pet him?”
“He’s mine, yeah, go ahead. His name’s Holly.” You immediately crouched back down to place your hand on Holly’s nose so that he could familiarize himself with you. Once he licked your hand, you knew you were in the clear to pet him. Meanwhile, your dog was evaluating Holly by sniffing his behind, which Holly allowed as he sniffed your dog in return.
“Your dog’s name is Leche? Isn’t that ‘milk’ in Spanish?” Yoongi snickered.
You looked up at Yoongi, narrowing your eyes. “Yeah, it is. Is there a problem?” Your tone was slightly accusing, and although you had been joking, Yoongi’s smile faltered until you chuckled and added a quick, “I’m kidding.”
“God,” he sighed, earning a laugh from you.
You scratched underneath Holly’s chin and squealed, “Holly is so fucking cute, what the fuck? He’s a toy poodle, right? Leche is one too.”
Yoongi hummed in affirmation as he crouched down to your level to mindlessly pet Leche who was still occupied evaluating Holly. Your dog was cute, but Yoongi was more interested in watching you.
“Take a picture, it’ll last longer,” you teased, and Yoongi’s eyes darted sideways as a light shade of pink dusted his cheeks upon being exposed for staring at you.
“Sorry,” he smiled bashfully.
“No need, I know I’m a pretty bitch.”
Yoongi blinked, slightly stunned by the bluntness of your remark, but it was true. Although you had significantly less makeup on since the first and last time he had seen you at Hoseok’s party, you still radiated so much beauty, much of it being natural. You had nothing on but a sheen layer of clear lip gloss; you liked going barefaced to allow your pores to breathe, especially since you weren’t going to any photo shoots today. You were pretty, yes, but your face wasn’t anything much out of the ordinary. Despite this, you still left men and women fascinated by your presence alone, your air of confidence attracting those in your path. Because you knew you were Top Tier Shit and acted accordingly, everyone believed it as well.
The way you leaned over to pet Holly had exposed your chest and Yoongi fought the urge to look down at your breasts. You weren’t wearing a bra either, so if your tie front crop top were to come undone, that would be it—tits out. Not to mention that your nipples were pierced and so the piercings stuck out from behind the fabric of your top. Your thick, brown legs had been exposed through the double slit sides of your maxi skirt, while the front of your dress covered a minimal amount of your crotch. Again, Yoongi fought the urge to look. Instead, he admired the adorability emanating from you in the unguarded moment he was witnessing. “Gorgeous,” he blurted and covered his face in a poor attempt to hide his mortification, a charming act you witnessed from your peripherals.
You swallowed down the acute desire to tease him further and instead rose to your feet to stretch your aching legs from having crouched down for so long; Yoongi followed. “Leche has never been this happy over meeting another dog, you know,” you said while watching the two dogs finally begin playing with one another. They hopped and rolled around in the grass while yelping excitedly. “He’s not very social and he’s picky with other dogs. I’m surprised that he's taken such interest in Holly.”
Yoongi raised an eyebrow at this. “Surprised why? Holly is the best dog in the world.”
You crossed your arms over your chest and raised a brow, “Excuse you? No, I think you’re mistaken. Leche is superior to all dogs. He’s a fucking king.” In your mind and your heart, Leche was your world. He was the only boy who was truly worthy of your time. He was your everything.
Too bad Yoongi thought the same about Holly. He let out a scoff. “Are you kidding me? Holly is. He’s smarter than everyone else.”
“Bitch, you would’ve thought! Can Holly follow commands?”
“Of course he can.” He quickly stood over Holly, interrupting his playtime with Leche. “Holly, sit,” he commanded, but to no avail; Holly ignored him completely.
“Leche,” you called, earning a look from a panting Leche. “Baby, come here.” Leche was hesitant in following your command; he was far too preoccupied playing with his new buddy, but after you had repeated the command a second time, he obeyed and approached you, tongue out. “Good boy.” You looked at Yoongi and smirked; you were the victor in this battle.
Yoongi’s face contorted into a scrunch, deciding it was best to let it be for now.
You were both parched and your pets needed hydration, so Yoongi invited you to go eat brunch together, which you had accepted. Luckily, Le Pain Quotidien in Central Park was only a five-minute walk away. It was a quaint little café with outdoor seats surrounded by the captivating scenery of Central Park. Most importantly, though, was that it was dog-friendly.
You both sat in the outside seating area with Leche and Holly lapping at the water in their doggy bowls beside each other. You had ordered an iced tea, while Yoongi ordered a Caffè Americano.
At the cafe, you learned many things about Yoongi. For one, he was polite—many times you had caught him attempting not to stare at your nipples through your moderately see-through top as you spoke, which was cute, you guessed; he had manners, unlike many men you had come across. He was also humble; merely thanking you for praising his work and adding that he needs to work harder and had expressed his wish to someday produce a song with reputable artists like Kanye West. He was cute, you had to give him that—the nose scrunch he made when things didn’t quite go his way was exceptionally adorable.
A comfortable silence fell between the two of you after conversing for nearly an hour at the café. Yoongi finished his drink before breaking the silence. “We should let Leche and Holly have playdates together.”
“Is this your way of saying you want to see me more often?”
“No. I just thought since—”
“Kidding,” you cut him off, although you were not.
Yoongi released an exasperated sigh. Two could play at that game. “And what if I said I did want to see you more often?”
You used your nails to flick off dirt from underneath your nail beds, feigning indifference. “Then I’d think it’s cute but silly. I’m always down to chill with a cute boy whenever I’m free. No need to make excuses.” You stirred the ice cubes in your iced tea with your straw and took a sip.
Cute. Yoongi tried to hide the smile that formed on his lips, but his body betrayed him. He looked at the time on his Rolex and his smile quickly faded. “I actually have to go now. I’m sorry,” he said a bit solemnly as he stood up from his seat with Holly’s harness in hand. You stood as well.
You hummed. “Sure, Cinderella.”
He scoffed, “I have work.”
“Right, the life of a producer is a busy one. I get it. It was nice seeing you again, Yoongi. And nice to meet you too, Holly.” You scratched behind Holly’s ear one last time.
Yoongi, not Suga PD anymore. He was Yoongi to you now. He liked that. “See you soon, Y/N, Lech—”
He cut off when you suddenly wrapped your arms around his shoulders in an embrace. He recalled that you had done the same thing at Hoseok’s party, only he had frozen up like a fool and had not reciprocated the hug, too deeply stunned and enraptured by your presence. Today was his chance to make amends; he wasn’t going to fuck it up this time.
He returned the hug, but you felt the apprehension to return the hug in his loose hold, his shyness quite apparent. You were hot, you knew that, but men like Yoongi who were evidently shaken up by you found were entertaining to observe.
The two of you separated and waved your goodbyes. Yoongi was fun, you decided. You knew you would have fun playing with him.
“If this bitch doesn’t come soon I’m going to throw hands.” You groaned, popping a cheese ball into your mouth.
You were lounging on the full length of Hoseok’s sofa in his loft with the rest of your squad. Being the incredible person you knew you were, making friends was easy. Everyone who did not envy you for your quick popularity wanted to be friends with you and all you had to do was let them (if they were worth your time, of course). Big Hit was a small company, and so by remaining authentic, you very easily befriended almost everyone but felt closest to the seven most appraised individuals within the company. You had already been friends with Hoseok prior to joining Big Hit, though, and had met Taehyung through mutual friends. Six of the seven aforementioned individuals were present at Hoseok’s hang out in his loft. You were just waiting for the arrival of the one person whom you had been dying to see.
Jimin lifted your feet from the couch and took a seat, placing your feet to rest on his lap instead. “He’ll come soon, Y/N.” He gently rubbed your calves with the palm of his hand in attempts to soothe you.
You chewed on the cheese ball aggressively out of frustration. “He fucking better.”
You were growing impatient. You hadn’t seen your best friend Seokjin in two months ever since he went away to film for the action drama he had been starring in. Facetime, text messaging, and phone calls were not a sufficient means of communicating with him, so you yearned for the presence of your best friend of many years. However, filming had ended and he had promised you he would come see you once he left his bags at his loft and greeted his dog.
“I’m taking a nap until he gets here,” you yawned while making yourself comfortable on the couch. Taehyung gently lifted your head to place a pillow underneath while Jimin continued stroking and massaging your legs.
Just as you were already drifting into sleep, the doorbell rang and your eyes shot open. You launched yourself out of the sofa to race for the door. After confirming who it was through the peephole, you quickly unlocked the door and swung it open, pleased to see your best friend arrive at long last.
“Jin!” You latched your body onto him, your legs wrapped around his waist as you pressed a big, sloppy kiss onto his cheek as you embraced him. Unfazed by your sudden attack, Jin was quick to grab hold of you and spun around with you in his hold before you detached yourself from him and stood back on your feet. “Why’d you take so long?” You whined, lips protruding into the cutest pout Jin had ever seen.
He pinched your cheeks softly before kissing your forehead. “Plane had a delay.”
Yoongi was surprised by the interaction he had been witnessing—he didn’t know you and Jin were acquainted with one another. He turned to Hoseok.“They’re friends too?”
Namjoon intervened, a glass of beer in hand, “They’ve been best friends for a very long time. The epitome of friendship goals, in fact.”
Hoseok sighed, “Yoongi, she’s close friends with everyone in this room: Me, Namjoon, Jin, Jimin, Taehyung, Jungkook. We’ve all hung out together about a dozen times. You’re the only one who hasn’t hung out with us and Y/N yet because you’ve been living under a fucking rock.”
Yoongi clicked his tongue. “No, I don’t.” He held a disapproving look, although he knew very well that it was true. He had found it a bit strange that you were even present at their hangout, seeing as when he hung out with the guys, it was usually only the seven of them and no one else included, but today you were there, too. He also noticed how Taehyung and Jimin had been treating you like a queen—as it should be, he thought, but it was in a way that seemed customary for them. He must have missed how they had all become close friends with you just as he had become with you ever since running into you and Leche in the park around a month ago.
“Damn right you do,” Namjoon added. “Writing music is great, but if it takes away too much time you could be spending with the people you care about and the people who care about you, then what good is it doing you?” Namjoon said this from a place of experience.
Okay, he gets it. The message Hoseok and the rest of his friends were persistently trying to send him had been heard loud and clear. He needed to spend fewer hours isolated in his studio and more time with his family and friends. Clearly, he had been missing out on quite a few changes within his friend group.
After Jin settled in, you all lounged in Hoseok’s kitchen; You and Jin were propped up on the kitchen counter while everyone else stood around with their drinks. Jungkook dug into the pantry for snacks as per Hoseok’s request.
“Bet none of you can chug the rest of this bottle of Hennessey down.” Taehyung dared, waving the glass bottle above his head.
At the sound of competition, Jungkook quickly reacted, throwing a bag of chips onto the kitchen counter before turning to Taehyung. “You think I can’t?” He smirked while yanking the bottle away from Taehyung’s grip. “Alright, bet.”
He rose the bottle to his lips before Namjoon quickly intervened, grabbing the bottle of Hennessy from out of Jungkook’s grasp. “Ok, so we’re not going to try that, you dumbasses.”
“Truly a bunch of dumbasses,” Yoongi quipped from the side.
You took the bottle from Namjoon and rose it to your lips, immediately chugging away at the alcohol despite the bitter taste. Namjoon made attempts to remove the bottle of Hennessey from your hands, but you pushed his face away with your free hand while continuing to empty the bottle’s contents with your other as everyone watched you in awe.
“Oh my God,” Jimin half-gasped, half-laughed.
“She’s gonna die,” Hoseok worried.
Yoongi, on the other hand, had been rendered speechless. With one hand over his chest while watching you down the bottle of Hennessey in utter disbelief, he felt a fire within him, and he was not quite sure what it was. He found something about you downing a bottle of hard alcohol being exceptionally attractive. You truly were not an entity to be messed with.
You slammed the now empty bottle of alcohol onto the kitchen counter and threw up a peace sign, poking your tongue out. “There’s nothing ya girl can’t do.” You looked around the room to see everyone in awe at your impulsive
“Y/N if you die what will I do with these idiots?” Jin joked in an attempt to mask his underlying concern.
You laughed, “Goddesses don’t die, do they?”
Everyone agreed in unison.
There is never a moment in life in which truth or dare becomes a dull and childish game, which was why the eight of you sat in Hoseok’s living room playing truth or dare despite being established, professional adults.
It was your turn this time and you were already beginning to feel the impact of your impulsive act from earlier. You had a high alcohol tolerance, but the fact that you had been taking shots after downing all of that Hennessy had begun making you feel a bit loopy; you weren’t feeling drunk enough to stop, though, which is why you continued despite Seokjin’s attempts in stopping you.
Jungkook had dared Taehyung to call up John Legend to confess his romantic love to him (that did not truly exist) in the most natural form possible without letting on that he was being dared—an act which Taehyung had begrudgingly done, but had done nonetheless and deeply regretted after hearing the man on the other line say on speaker, “you know I’m married. You’re cute, though. I’m sure there’s someone out there for you, kid.” Once the phone call had ended, Taehyung attempted to strangle Jungkook and the room filled with roars of laughter. He was sure his relationship with John would become strained after that dare, so he made a mental note to call him up the next morning to apologize and to inform him that he had not been serious, that it was just a dare. It unnerved him that Jungkook chose one of the people Taehyung admired the most as an artist as his target for humiliation. Hopefully, John would understand.
After Taehyung’s turn, it was his role to ask you the grand question. “Truth or dare?”
“Truth,” you said without mulling it over.
“Oh? Not up for a dare?”
You rolled your eyes, “You play too much. I know damn well that if I were to say ‘dare’ you’d make me do some weird shit.” They all chuckled knowing full well that this was true.
He hummed. “Fine.” He pondered over what question to ask you for a moment before he looked at you with a grin. “Is it true that you’ve had sex with everyone in this room?”
Suddenly, all eyes were staring intently at you, highly anticipating your answer.
Namjoon groaned, “Ask a better question, you know it’s true.” He received a disapproving nudge in the ribs from Hoseok and yelped.
“Don’t ask her anything she wouldn’t feel comfortable answering sober, you fucks.” Yoongi said exasperatedly.
You ignored Yoongi’s remark. It was a nice gesture, but you didn’t care. You weren’t ashamed of your sex life and you didn’t like anyone speaking for you. “No, not everyone in this room.”
A few of them looked at you with quizzical expressions.
“Really? Who haven’t you fucked?”
“Mr. Producer over here,” you pointed to Yoongi and in return, he nearly spat out his drink. All of the attention then turned to him.
Yoongi sat up, his posture becoming defensive. “Whoa, whoa, whoa. Wait, what do you mean just me? I thought you’ve only slept with Hoseok?”
“I’ve been dicked down by everyone in this room,” you said, your nonchalance apparent in your tone, contrary to Yoongi’s expression.
He looked at you in bewilderment and gestured to Seokjin who had been sitting across from him. “But Jin’s gay!”
You and Seokjin looked at each other and broke into fits of laughter simultaneously, recalling the event amongst yourselves, while the rest of the boys couldn’t help but feel excluded. “Shit happens,” you said with a shrug and Seokjin’s snicker confirmed it as a truth.
The room was filled to the brim with raucous laughter.
“Wow, Y/N.” Hoseok clapped. “That’s...commendable.”
“I should like, gather all of your dicks together and gobble them right up. Wouldn’t that be fucking cool?”
“That’s physically impossible,” Jungkook claimed. “Isn’t it?”
“Well, some of your dicks are skinny enough to make the cut, some of those dicks being—”
“Um,” Taehyung cut you off. “Maybe we should move on,” he suggested. They all agreed in hopes that you wouldn’t expose them for their dicks.
“There's always that one person that will always have your heart
You never see it coming 'cause you're blinded from the start
Know that you're that one for me, it's clear for everyone to see
Oh baby, ooh
You will always be my boo.”
“Why is she singing Usher’s part and not Seokjin?” Jimin snorted.
“Because I fucking can,” you shouted before it was Seokjin’s turn to sing Alicia Key’s verse.
“See, I don't know 'bout y'all, but I know about us and, uh
It's the only way we know how to rock
I don't know 'bout y'all, but I know about us and, uh
It's the only way we know how to rock”
After playing truth or dare, you had expressed your desire to use Hoseok’s karaoke machine, and of course, Hoseok was complacent and set it up for all of you to use. You had pulled Seokjin to sing with you, and despite how tired he had been, he agreed to sing with his best friend, especially since your song selection had been one of yours and his songs from back in the day.
“It started when we were younger, you were mine (my boo)
Now another brother's taken over, but it's still in your eyes (my boo)”, you sang, cupping Seokijn’s cheek with the palm of your hand.
None of you took it seriously, of course—the both of you goofed off as you sang your respective parts, dancing with one another drunkenly. You sang off-key with eccentric movements, while Seokjin belted out some of the verses, the both of you pointing to each other as though dedicating the song to one another. The gang joined in for the bridge enthusiastically, “Oh, my oh, my oh, my oh, my, my boo. My oh, my oh, my oh, my oh, my boo.”
The rest of the karaoke session consisted of drunk bickering, boisterous laughter, and impromptu dancing while singing off-key. You were out of control, but Seokjin had a mere few drinks to ascertain that he was sober enough to watch you. You were a funny drunk; your laughter was more obnoxious than usual, your movements exaggerated, you were dirtier than usual, and you kept insisting that, “I’m not even that drunk” (which you were). But you were also reckless and he wanted to ensure that you wouldn’t hurt yourself like you had in the past. You were an incredible woman, but like everyone, you had vulnerabilities, too, and that’s something many failed to remember.
Dancing to Taehyung and Jimin’s drunken duet, you tripped on your own feet and Yoongi caught you in his arms while he had been sitting down before you had a chance to fall. You were sat on his lap and stared at him for a moment, while he looked back at you fully aware of the fact that your ass was on his lap and quite close to a sensitive region.
He smiled coyly and glanced between the space between you and him or lack thereof. “You good?”
You, too, were fully aware, of the position the two of you were in and you bounced on his lap to tease him, earning the cutest surprised groan you had ever heard elicit from his lips. You howled with laughter at his reaction and stood up, pulling by the hands to stand and dance with you. When you noticed his refusal to dance, opting to instead stand still and look at you in vexation, you pulled his head to your chest, pressing him firmly between your breasts with your arms and swayed to the music as you shouted the lyrics at the top of your lungs.
“Y/N,” Yoongi whined. He was drunk, too, but not drunk enough to let you do this to him, not enough to let you shove your tits in his face, no matter how warm and tender they felt against him. Finally, he freed himself of your grip and you moved onto your next victim.
He felt his face burn and he realized he had been holding his breath for too long while he was still in your grasp. He felt an uncomfortable tightening in his pants and fanned himself with his hand. Was it hot in the room or was it just him?
“Is she dead?” Jungkook peered over the couch to see your face.
Namjoon clicked his tongue. “Girl is wasted.”
It was 3:27 am and everyone had been exhausted from the night’s events, but after having too many drinks and exerting all of your energy, you had fallen asleep on the sofa, which indicated that it was time for everyone to go home.
Jungkook began reaching for your face with a marker. “Should we draw a mustache on her face with a marker like they do in movies?”
Seokjin swatted Jungkook’s hand away from your face. “No. I mean unless you have a death wish.” He did not specify if it would be you or Seokjin who would inflict death on Jungkook, and while both options were terrifying, he preferred it to be Seokjin. You were far too scary and your punishments were gruesome.
They all helped Hoseok clean the mess they had made around the loft, putting everything in its rightful place and taking out the trash. Once the deed had been done, Hoseok dismissed Jungkook, Jimin, and Taehyung, while the older boys finished tidying up; they obliged and headed home. Namjoon had to leave a bit early as he had to meet with an artist in the afternoon.
“Y/N can sleep over on my bed tonight,” Hoseok declared. It wasn’t the first time you had crashed over his place when you were too drunk to function or take a cab home, and besides, you were too drunk to be left home alone anyways. It wasn’t safe. “I can sleep on my futon.”
“I’ll help her get dressed, then.” Seokjin gently pulled your sleeping figure forward to stand, but you were uncooperative. He settled for carrying you to Hoseok’s bedroom instead, your sleeping body cradled in his arms before he gently dropped you onto the mattress.
Once you had woken up the slightest bit, Seokjin helped you dress into one of Hoseok’s large t-shirts so that you would sleep comfortably. Scratch that—Seokjin undressed you from your bralette and sweatpants and lifted your arms to dress you into Hoseok’s t-shirt while you did the bare minimum, sitting on Hoseok’s bed and allowing Seokjin to do all of the work for you. After dressing you into a clean shirt, he washed your face for you, knowing the importance and emphasis you held on maintaining a proper skin care routine and not wanting for you to break your routine because you were drunk off of your ass. Luckily, Hoseok had the same facial cleanser you used at home.
Seokjin looked at you disapprovingly, seeing the state you were in. “Y/N, what will I do with you?”
You had already begun drifting into sleep on Hoseok’s bed, eyelids half-open, half-closed with your gaze focusing on Seokjin weakly. “Jiiiiin,” you drawled out. He moved closer to your face and hummed for you to continue. You threw your arms around his shoulders, pulling him in closer. “I love youuuu.”
Seokijn clicked his tongue, yet a grin had broken through. You were too precious. “Get some rest, okay?” You nodded weakly and he separated himself from your grasp and planted a tender kiss onto your forehead, pulling the sheets over your now sleeping body.
Hoseok and Yoongi had been standing by the bedroom entrance waiting for Seokjin to finish caring for you.
“I’ll stay up to watch over her—make sure she’ll be okay,” Yoongi volunteered.
Hoseok suppressed a yawn. “It’s okay, I got this.”
“I can take her to my place and watch her.” Seokjin intervened, eyes already red and droopy from exhaustion; naturally, he wanted to be the one to take care of his best friend, especially after not having seen her in person for four months, but he was not in a good condition to do so.
Yoongi pat Hoseok’s shoulder. “No, go get some rest. I can watch her,” he insisted. He looked at Seokjin. “You need to get some rest too, you were on a 7-hour flight. You must be fucking exhausted. Take a cab home.”
Hoseok was well acquainted with the fact that you and Yoongi had become friends, so he held no worries with Yoongi taking care of you while he and Seokjin were resting, nor did he find Yoongi’s willingness to watch over you in case you got sick while sleeping strange. It was not uncommon for Yoongi to extend a hand to someone whom he cared about and you were no exception to his kindness.
Seokjin, on the other hand, was hesitant in letting Yoongi care for you. It wasn’t that he didn’t trust Yoongi—his years of camaraderie with Yoongi had long since proven that Yoongi was a dependable person; he also knew you and Yoongi had become friends as well, based on what you had told him while he was away filming in Spain. It was more the fact that he felt most comfortable with Hoseok caring for you, seeing as he and you had been friends for years and Seokjin had seen your friendship and platonic intimacy with his own two eyes, as opposed to you and Yoongi. Still, Yoongi was a good option—well, the only option since he had been exhausted beyond belief, jet lag finally affecting him—and so he agreed.
Seokijn gathered his phone and made his way to leave the loft, halting by the door for a moment to look at Yoongi. “Take good care of her, okay?” His tone was stern and Yoongi felt shivers course through his body upon seeing Seokjin’s sudden and unusual change in demeanor.
“Of course,” he replied, feeling a bit nervous; Seokjin was frightening when he was serious. With that, he left Hoseok’s loft.
Yoongi was already on his way to Hoseok’s bedroom to watch you when Hoseok had been leaving with a spare pillow and blanket that he would be using to sleep on his couch while you slept on his bed.
“I don’t really have to tell you, but make yourself comfortable in there,” Hoseok ended with a yawn.
Yoongi waved him away with his hand and Hoseok made his leave into the living room, leaving Yoongi behind with your sleeping figure.
He took a seat on Hoseok’s work desk and pulled out his song book and pen from his back pocket. If he was going to stay up making sure you were going to be okay, he was going to do something productive in the meantime. He opened his songbook and attempted writing, but was only able to jot down a few words. The night’s events were coursing through his mind and he realized how much he had missed the company of his friends, including you. Sure, it had felt a bit strange knowing that he was the only one who had not known that you were very well acquainted with his best friends, but the dynamic between all of you together had felt pleasantly natural. He had only been friends with you for a few months, but the time spent together between the eight of you was so natural that it felt as though you all had been a group of friends for years.
What did surprise him, though, was your intimacy with Seokjin. His dad jokes were cringy and he was excessively self-confident in a way that transcended humility, but Yoongi noticed that you laughed at Seokjin’s jokes nonetheless and inflated his ego even further whenever he boasted about his appearance. He noticed that when you boasted about yourself as well, Seokjin returned the favor and ardently meant it when he had said you were the most ethereal woman he had ever set his eyes on. The rest of the boys agreed as well, fuck, even Yoongi agreed, but he felt something in the pit of his stomach that unsettled him about the situation. There was also the look stern Seokjin gave him before leaving Hoseok’s loft, which indicated how he took your well-being seriously and wanted Yoongi to do the same. He wasn’t sure what it was, or why this feeling of disquiet had risen, and not knowing perturbed him even further.
What also unsettled him was how hot and bothered he had gotten when you practically ground your ass on his crotch and then pressed his face onto your warm breasts. Becoming aroused was a natural reaction to what you had done, he supposed, and it wasn’t unorthodox for you to get clingy with your friends, as he had observed from your behavior with Hoseok when the three of you hung out together and now with Seokjin and the others. He knew you loved to tease him, and this was even more apparent when you were inebriated and felt compelled to tease him further. Still, feeling this flustered unnerved him. It wasn’t like he he was a virgin (although he hadn’t gotten any action for around a year). Yoongi decided to brush it off for now, opting to instead check up on you. He wheeled away from the work desk and moved towards the bed you were sleeping in.
Quite frankly, you looked fucked up. You were spread out on Hoseok’s bed, one leg sticking outside of the mattress and the other folded with your knee pointing towards the ceiling. Your eyelids were puffy, your hair was disheveled, you reeked of alcohol, and drool seeped onto Hoseok’s pillowcase as you slept serenely. He felt a bit rude for staring at you, especially in the state you were in. He knew you were constantly aware of your appearance and you wouldn’t have approved of his staring at you. Yet, he couldn’t help but watch you sleep. It was the first time he had seen you so vulnerable. It wasn’t that you were always on-guard, but you never allowed anyone to see you so unkempt, which he was able to understand—he wouldn’t want anyone seeing him when he looked this fucked up too. The guilt he had felt for watching your sleeping figure wasn’t enough to make him stop watching you, though.
He collected the bed sheets that had fallen onto the floor and covered you with them properly after pulling your leg back into the mattress. Sitting back down onto the chair, he continued admiring your face, enjoying the tranquility of the room shared by only the two of you. He leaned his elbow onto the mattress and perched his head up, chin on the palm of his hand as you snored quietly. God, you were so cute. Despite being unkempt and being drunk off of your ass, you were a paragon of divinity. He brushed the curls out of your face and tucked it behind your ear so he could see you properly in all of your glory. His fingers remained where they were on your face, the back of his hand grazing against your cheek ever-so-slightly. You twitched at the touch and upon seeing you twitch, he froze in place. Had he been caught in the act? You licked your lips and swallowed, his eyes following the movement of your lips, the temptation to kiss them growing like tides every moment that passed while he stared at them. He couldn’t though, it wasn’t right to kiss you while unconscious. Kissing a deity is dangerous.
He bit down his desires and wheeled his way back to Hoseok’s desk. You inspired him to compose.

MARGARET L. SHANAHAN: PSYCHOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVES ON VAMPIRE MYTHOLOGY
Through the twentieth-century the psychological element of the vampire myth repeatedly captured the attention, even fascination, of psychological researchers. The widespread presence of the vampire image in human cultures led some psychologists to call the vampire an archetype-an intrapsychic psychological structure grounded in the collective unconscious. The differing major psychoanalytic interpretations help us understand the compelling fascination with narratives and images grounded in vampire mythology. This mythology rests on central metaphors of the mysterious power of human blood, images of the undead, forbidden and sexualized longings, and the ancient idea that evil is often hard to detect in the light of day. Humans have long felt that there is a sense in which evil operates like a contagious disease, spreading through defilement caused by direct contact with a carrier of a supernatural “toxin.”
Freudian Perspectives: Prior to Freud’s development of psychoanalysis, even sophisticated psychologies tended to associate the realm of the undead with premodern demonological mythologies. Freudian thought legitimized the human fantasies of the undead as a topic for serious scientific research. Freud developed a modern map of the unconscious, which he saw as a repository of denied desires, impulses, and wishes of a sexual and sometimes destructively aggressive nature. In sleep we view the unconscious as a landscape inhabited by those aspects of life that go on living, the realm of the undead spoken through dreams. According to Freudian psychoanalysis, vampire narratives express in complex form the fascination-both natural and unnatural-which the living take in death and the dead. From Freud’s point of view, “All human experiences of morbid dread signify the presence of repressed sexual and aggressive wishes, and in vampirism we see these repressed wishes becoming plainly visible.” Freudians emphasize the ways in which ambivalence permeates vampire stories. Death wishes coexist with the longing for immortality. Greed and sadistic aggression coexist with a compulsively possessive expression of desire. Images of deep and shared guilt coexist with those of virginal innocence and vulnerability.
Freud and his followers noted the ways in which vampire stories reflect the unconscious world of polymorphous perverse infantile sexuality. From a Freudian point of view it is particularly striking that in Bram Stoker's Dracula, all the traditional mythical traits of the vampire are blended in such a way that it reflects the Oedipus complex. Count Dracula is seen as a father figure of enormous power and the entire story one of incest, necrophilia, and sadistic acting out of oral and anal fixations. According to Freud, the Oedipus complex emerges between the ages of three and five and is responsible for much unconscious guilt. Oedipal rivalry with fathers causes castration anxiety in males. Both males and females experience feelings of aggression toward the parent of the same sex and feelings of possessive erotic desire toward the parent of the opposite sex. Since conscious awareness of these feelings and associated wishes raises the anxiety level of the child to unacceptable levels, ego defenses come into play to prevent the conscious mind from becoming aware of these dangerous impulses. From the Freudian point of view, it is the function of dreams to disguise these wishes into more acceptable forms that will not wake the dreamer from sleep. Thus, a competent dream interpretation can trace dream images back to the unacceptable Oedipal wishes that underlie them. Following this belief, the vampire image is a fantasy image related to these wishes.
A classical Freudian interpretation of the vampire legend, therefore, seeks to discern the same denied Oedipal wishes in the story. Here the blending of sexuality and aggression in the vampire attack is seen as suggestive of the child’s interpretation of the primal scene (the parents having sexual intercourse). That is, the male child often fantasizes sexual contact between his parents as causing harm to the mother. From this point of view, Count Dracula’s relationship to his group of female vampires can be interpreted as an image of the father-daughter acting out of repressed incestuous strivings that continue to hold the daughter under the power of the father’s spell. Werewolves, “pit bulls from the pounds of hell,” are another image of this same father-daughter tryst. The immature female whose own agency and autonomy are undeveloped, secretly agrees to the father’s continuing narcissistic claims to power over her life.
Clearly, Freud and his early followers were right in their assumption that the vampire myth was grounded in archaic images of repressed longings and fears. However, the classical Freudian interpretation-while containing some helpful insights-was a gross oversimplification of the psychological contents of vampire narratives. Carl Jung offered the first powerful alternative to early Freudian views.
Jungian Perspectives: Jungian psychoanalysts point to the worldwide interest in the vampire as evidence of its archetypal nature. From a Jungian perspective, the myriad varieties of vampire narratives found cross-culturally throughout history indicate that these images are not merely by-products of personal experience but are grounded in species-wide psychological structures. In other words, vampire images reflect significant experiences and issues that are universal in human lives around the world. In short, there is something about the vampire that we already understand intuitively-with the knowledge coming from deep within our psyche.
Jung believed that the vampire image could be understood as an expression of what he termed the “shadow,” those aspects of the self that the conscious ego was unable to recognize. Some aspects of the shadow were positive. But usually the shadow contained repressed wishes, anti-social impulses, morally questionable motives, childish fantasies of a grandiose nature, and other traits felt to be shameful. As Jung put it: The shadow is a moral problem that challenges the whole ego-personality, for no one can become conscious of the shadowwithout considerable moral effort. To become conscious of it involves recognizing the dark aspects of the personality as present and real.
The vampire could be seen as a projection of that aspect of the personality, which according to the conscious mind should be dead but nevertheless lives. In this way Jung interpreted the vampire as an unconscious complex that could gain control over the psyche, taking over the conscious mind like an enchantment or spell. And even when we were not overwhelmed by this unconscious complex, its presence led us to project the content of the complex onto characters in a vampire narrative. Of social importance, the image of the vampire in popular culture serves us as a useful scapegoat since-through the mechanism of projection-the vampire allows us to disown the negative aspects of our personalities. As Daryl Coats noted:Dracula treats Mina Harker the way Jonathan Harker would like to treat her but is scared to do so. Dracula treats Lucy the way her fiance would like to treat her. The vampiric Lucy can respond to men the way the non-vampiric Lucy could not.
This Jungian interpretation of the vampire image provided significant insight into the enormous popularity of vampire stories. From this point of view, a vampire lives within each of us. We project this inner reality on both male and female persons, members of other “tribes” and ethnic groups. We all have a dim awareness that this demonic yet tragic figure is real. However, we usually fail to grasp that this outer image is an expression of an inner reality-a reality that is elusive, threatening to self and others, and that can be effectively engaged only through a combination of empathy and heroic effort.
Jung did not limit his discussion to what would be an oversimplification by suggesting that vampiric traits in others result entirely from our projections. He observed that auto-erotic, autistic, or otherwise narcissistic personality traits can result in a personality that is in fact predatory, anti-social, and parasitic on the life energy of others. In contemporary psychology and psychiatry this type of personality is called a “narcissistic personality disorder.” This clinical syndrome contains the most important clues to the psychological reality represented in the vampire image.
Otto Kernberg noted that narcissistic personalities are characterized by a “very inflated concept of themselves and an inordinate need for tribute from others.” Capable of only a shallow emotional life they have difficulty experiencing any empathy for the feelings of others. Their ability to enjoy life, except for their experiences of their own grandiose fantasies and the tributes that they can manipulate others into giving them, is severely limited. They easily become restless and bored unless new sources are feeding their self esteem. They envy what others possess and tend to idealize the few people from whom they desire food for their narcissistic needs. They depreciate and treat with contempt any from whom they do not expect nurturance. According to Kernberg, “their relationships with other people are clearly exploitative and parasitic.” Kernberg’s description of the narcissistic personality sounds as if it were crafted to describe vampires: It is as if they feel they have the right to control and possess others and to exploit them without guilt feelings-and behind the surface, which very often is charming and engaging, one senses coldness and ruthlessness.
Jungian interpreters often highlight the parallels between the vampire image and the characteristics of narcissistic psychopathology. Daryl Coats, for example, has noted that the vampire is both narcissistic and autistic. He emphasizes that the vampire experiences “narcissistic self-destruction as a result of their intensely selfish desires.” Jungian analyst Julia McAfee has focused on the vampire as an image of the shadow of the narcissistic mother. The narcissistic mother, while appearing on the surface to have good will and a nurturing attitude toward the child, in fact drains the energy of the child and weakens the child through subtle (and not so subtle) emotional exploitation. This pattern provides insight into the psychological experiences that underlie the numerous folktales of vampires preying on children. As we shall see below, vampiric parents have always been a widespread human phenomenon-and there is reason to believe that the incidence of such predatory behavior toward children is increasing.
The Vampire and the Culture of Narcissism: Although Jung and subsequent Jungian interpreters have noted these and other narcissistic aspects of vampire myths, they did not adequately explore narcissistic psychopathology, the chief psychological dynamic underlying vampire narratives and the major reason for the current burgeoning fascination with the vampire image. However, others assumed the lead in psychoanalytic research into pathological narcissism and its social formation as a “culture of narcissism.”
In his book, The Culture of Narcissism, Christopher Lasch diagnosed the rapidly spreading climate of moral self absorption that has emerged in the wake of modernization and secularization. Our contemporary penchant for narcissistic self indulgence has resulted from the eclipse of the Protestant work ethic with its emphasis on public involvement and community values. Lasch also noted that contemporary alterations in culture also indicated a fundamental shift in our psychological development. Peter Homans, building on Lasch’s insight, suggested “that the dominant or modal personality of our culture has shifted to a narcissistic psychological organization.” He tied this recent phenomenon to the process of a gradual erosion of a religious view of the world. Homans further noted that the collapse of the Protestant ethic as a bulwark against pathological self involvement was only the last in a long line of cultural and religious developments leading to today’s increasing narcissism. Here we begin to discern the chief psychological dynamic underlying the increasing popularity of vampire images and narratives. “If our society is a culture of narcissistic self-involvement, then the vampire image is a perfect icon to express the psychological character configuration underlying it.”
Vampirism and Narcissistic Psychopathology-Perspectives from Psychoanalytic Self Psychology: Both Lasch and Homans have emphasized the importance of the contribution of psychoanalytic self psychology in their analysis of the culture of narcissism. They built upon the insights of such theorists as Alice Miller, D. W. Winnicott, Heinz Kohut, and Ernest Wolf who, in their analysis of narcissistic pathology, provide a more adequate understanding of the vampiric metaphor, its myth, and meaning in contemporary culture. Psychoanalyst Alice Miller has written extensively on the ways in which narcissistic mothers prey on their children. In her best-selling The Drama of the Gifted Child and other books Miller describes in depth the ways in which an emotionally immature mother can reverse the appropriate flow of nurturing-expecting the child to be whatever the parent needs for the parent’s own satisfaction. This creates in the child a compliant but false self-an empty shell that, though it appears to be functional and successful, is in fact covering an extremely enfeebled, needy, and fragile core. D. W. Winnicott, famed British psychoanalyst, wrote extensively on the concept of the false self, which developed in response to an inadequately nurturant early emotional environment. It was, however, psychoanalyst Heinz Kohut who became the chief interpreter of narcissistic personalities. The work of Kohut, Wolf, and their colleagues offers us the best understanding of the psychodynamics that underlie the vampire narratives.
What goes wrong to cause an individual to develop a narcissistic personality disorder? As Kohut emphasized, the development of a “normal” personality requires a creative interplay between the innate potentials of the child’s self and the emotional environment that is created by those who are the primary caregivers of the child. The emerging self of the child contains infantile potentials for mature self-esteem and a cohesive sense of the self. But the environment of the child must evoke and support the development of those potentials if the self of the child is to mature into a centered and vigorous personality. Among the essentials of an adequate nurturing environment are: idealizable adults who will allow intimacy and empowering merger with their calmness, and nurturant significant others who will “mirror” the child (i.e., recognize and affirm the independence and value of the child’s emerging self).
Kohut asserted that an inadequate nurturing environment causes significant damage in the form of “narcissistic wounds.” The development of the self is arrested and the emerging self is left in a weakened condition in an ongoing struggle with overwhelming longings and unmet emotional needs. When normal development is disturbed in this way, the resulting state of emotional disequilibrium necessitates that the individual seek to compensate for the resulting deficit or weakness in the structure of the self. Therefore, the person who has not successfully built a psychological internal structure remains pathologically needy and dependent upon others to perform functions he or she can not execute. Others must be “used” in various ways to bolster a fragile sense of self and to attempt to fill an inner emptiness. This primal dependency is at the root of “vampiric” predatory patterns in relationships.
Symptoms resulting from such emotional disturbances have characteristic features. Patients often report feeling depressed, depleted, and drained of energy. They report feelings of emptiness, dulled emotions, inhibited initiative, and not being completely real. At work they may find themselves constricted in creativity and unproductive. In social interaction they may have difficulty in forming and sustaining interpersonal relationships. They may become involved in delinquent and anti-social activities. They often lack empathy for the feelings and needs of others, have attacks of uncontrolled rage or pathological lying. Often a person with such narcissistic wounds will become hypochondriacally preoccupied with bodily states. They will experience bodily sensations of being cold drained and empty. These clinical descriptions, of course, parallel some of the major symptoms of the victims of vampires as described in vampire narratives. However, we shall see below that the tie between narcissistic pathology and the vampire is much tighter than merely sharing the same set of symptoms.
Narcissistic wounds and resulting pathology manifests in a wide spectrum of clinical syndromes ranging from psychosis to narcissistic character disorders. Among several narcissistic disorders described by Kohut and Wolf that are relevant for an inquiry into the vampire myth, what they denoted as the “mirror-hungry personalities” is of special importance (Kohut and Wolf, 1978). Mirror-hungry personalities “thirst for self objects whose confirming and admiring responses will nourish their famished self.” Because of their deep-felt lack of worth and self esteem, these persons have a compulsive need to evoke the attention and energy of others. A few establish relationships that fuel their needs for long periods, but they also engage in a constant search for new sources or supplies of emotional nourishment. Even genuinely loving, accepting, and nurturing responses quickly become experienced as inadequate. Thus, Wolf elaborates: Despite their discomfort about their need to display themselves and despite their sometimes severe stage fright and shame they must go on trying to find new self objects whose attention and recognition they seek to induce.
Such mirror-hungry personalities often manifest arrogant superiority. If this arrogance is not affirmed and accepted they will often withdraw into what self psychologists call “a grandiose retreat” seeking refuge in isolation in order to shore up their self esteem. Kohut and Wolf have noted that such personalities may result either from a lack of mirroring attention in childhood or from a problem with the parent’s attempts to give such attention. For example, when a parent gives a child attention, the parent may fail to align that attention to the immediate needs of the child. Instead, the parent may claim the child’s attention not to nurture the child, but to bolster the parent’s enfeebled self by reenforcing the dependence of the child on the parent. In any case, the child does not receive the kind of mirroring attention that allows for the development of an independent and vigorous self. The intense infantile needs for adequate mirroring will persist in the unconscious of the adult in the form of deep and compulsive longings.
It should be clear from the above description that the powerful appeal of vampire narratives grow out of the human experience of mirror-hunger both in parent and child. When this psychologically archaic hunger for affirmation is seen in the parent, it results in predatory emotional exploitation of the child. Such exploitation is an increasingly widespread experience and undoubtedly lies behind the growing fascination with the vampire image. It is these “vampiric parents” that were noted above in the work of Julia McAfee and Alice Miller.
The dynamics of mirror-hunger also helps us to understand the combination of grandiosity and immortality in the vampire mythology. When the child does not experience adequate mirroring, its infantile grandiosity cannot be transformed into a mature psychological structure identified by its more realistic sense of self esteem. Adult untransformed grandiosity makes unrealistic claims on others. There are accompanying fantasies of being able to fly, being invisible, being able to change shape at will-all capacities of a vampire. That the vampire does not, and cannot die can be seen as the way in which grandiose feeling of invulnerability take possession of the mirror-hungry person when archaic needs break through into consciousness. The more disappointment experienced by the mirror-hungry person, the more they resort to the grandiose retreat from social involvement. What is Dracula’s remote castle on the top of a difficult to reach mountain if it is not a “grandiose retreat?”
Dracula is not satisfied in his isolation. His hunger drives him in search for someone to fulfill his longings. So the retreat does not satisfy, but intensifies the experience of chronic emptiness and longing, and eventually to another expedition to find “new blood.”
The effect of a vampiric visitation is clearly experienced as a drain of energy on the part of the prey, along with a kind of claustrophobic suffocation resulting from the “depletion” of the blood. Mirror-hungry personalities often manifest a kind of “counter-dependency.” That is, they will often seek to avoid expressions of emotional need and dependency. Underlying this reluctance to admit chronic unmet needs to self or others is the fear of a disastrous, even fatal, depletion of the person who is seen as a potential source of gratification. Thus we can understand Count Dracula’s ambivalence with regard to his claiming Mina as one of the undead. If she is exploited, then she is depleted and no longer an adequate source. Therefore the prospect of “having” can be experienced simultaneously as a threat of “losing.” Self psychologists often refer to such fears of destroying the nourishing self object as one of the reasons for the “defense against self object longings.” A person may feel, “my needs for mirroring and narcissistic supplies are monstrous-if I gratify them, they may destroy you. Therefore I must not let myself be aware of these toxic needs.”
This escape into denial is paralleled in the Dracula’s daylight retreat into his native soil (mother earth) brought from Transylvania and placed in his residence at Carfax. While the vampire sleeps during the daylight of consciousness, in the enclosure of unconsciousness-symbolized by the coffin-he sleeps unaware of his unmet longings for maternal nurture. This dynamic illustrates the central conflict of the vampire drama . There is both desperation for an infusion of emotional nutriments, “lifeblood,” if the fragmentation of the self is to be avoided-and revulsion at the “monstrous” neediness that this desperate longing manifests in the inner emotional life. Although the conscious mind may repress awareness of these urges, we can see here that in the vampiric personality narcissistic rage and related envy manifests in a compulsive desire to seek the destruction of the independent life of the other. The other has been experienced as possessing “the Good,” life, energy, well-being, attention, etc. The envying person experiences emptiness within, intolerable longing for something that will fill the void, and the desire to take the other’s “life” from them-thereby hoping to gain enough “nutriments” to avoid the disintegration of the self.
This self psychological interpretation sheds some useful light on the elements of sexuality so integral to the vampire narratives. A hallmark of vampire mythology has been the powerful erotic imagery accompanying the vampire attack. The sexual contact portrayed in these stories utilizes images of the innocent virginal woman or youth becoming the target of compulsive bloodlust (e.g., narratives that merge engagement in sexual intercourse with the acquisition of bite wounds to the throat and breast). Sexuality and aggression fuse in a manner that leads to the infection and death of the victim. Psychologically speaking, narcissistic wounds often lead the individual to seek narcissistic nourishment through sexual activity. A facade of sexual attraction and genital sexual behavior masks a quest for what Freudians have called oral (not genital) gratification. The compulsive quality of this sexual behavior is grounded in the individual’s narcissistic psychopathology. Today this pathology is widely understood to be the emotional foundation of sexual addictions. The Dracula story captures this combination of apparently erotic behaviors that are, in fact, expressions of a deep inner emptiness, not human affection.
The Social Psychology of Intergroup Hate: The Vampire Image and the Mechanism of Scapegoating: It would be a mistake to assume that the psychological importance of the image of the vampire relates only to intrapsychic, familial, and small group interpersonal interactions. The projection of this image onto other social groups is undoubtedly one of the powerful psychosocial mechanisms that fuel malignant racism, anti-Semitism, sexism, and other expressions of scapegoating with resultant hate crimes .
In the dynamic of scapegoating, we find someone or some group that can be used as a receptacle for the projection of the vampiric image. Then the scapegoat can be blamed, cast out of the community, and/or persecuted with various degrees of violence. This externalization of the vampiric image enables the person or “in-group” to feel better-guiltless or “cleansed.” As a social dynamic such scapegoating both allocates blame and seems to “inoculate” against further disappointments by evicting or eliminating the cause of one’s “disease.”
Racist rhetoric is frequently fueled by the projection of the image of the vampire onto other social groups. An example of this recently became international news when a leader of an American Black Muslim group publicly characterized Jewish people as “bloodsuckers,” imaging them as parasites draining the lifeblood of the black community. The projection of this image enables the dehumanization of its target group-allowing the rationalizations needed to justify ruthless racial discrimination and violence.
Such racist rhetoric is usually grounded in what self psychologists call “narcissistic rage”. Narcissistic rage differs from anger or “righteous indignation.” Anger always seeks positive changes in relationship in a context of justice and potential reconciliation-not the destruction of the other party. Narcissistic rage seeks the utter destruction of the independent personhood of the other-either through death or ruthless enslavement and exploitation. Thus the vampire within projects its image onto the other-thereby justifying its own predatory intentions.
Conclusions-Emptiness, Envy, and the Vampiric Personality: In surveying the development of the major psychoanalytic perspectives on the vampire, the attempt was made to trace the manner in which each school of thought, out of its understanding of fundamental psychodynamic processes, sought to interpret vampirism. Each of these perspectives contributed to the understanding of the rich mythological and symbolic narratives of vampire lore and one by one built the foundation upon which the more promising contemporary interpretation by self psychology, which views the vampire as a primary icon representing essential aspects of narcissistic psychopathology, rests. Self psychology calls attention to the significance of inner emptiness, the longing for emotional nutriments that can prevent disintegration of the self, and the resulting envy that sees such nutriments (the Good) in others and wishes to take it from them. Contemporary psychoanalytic self psychology in the tradition of Heinz Kohut and Ernest Wolf, in offering a more complete psychological understanding of the origins, major forms, and manifestations of such vampiric psychological illness, also provides the necessary therapeutic insights and techniques needed if healing for vampiric and vampirized personalities is to occur.

Noir Nocturne Part 1 Chapter 11 My Future Just Passed
“Well come on then. You might as well have a cup or two yourselves.” Rhea Bartlett waved them in from her place by the stove top. “Just percolated, my favorite!” she said reaching for some mugs on a shelf above the range. “Sugar and cream on the table. Don’t tell the others I did this for you, I won’t hear the end of it.”
Claire was beginning to suspect that Mrs. Bartlett’s bark was worse than her bite. “You have a lovely home Ma’am. Our rooms are perfect. I can’t tell you how much I am looking forward to a long soak in the tub.” She took her mug and one for Jamie and sat down at a much smaller table then the one in the dining room. The kitchen was not that large but all six of them weren’t cramped up next to each other either.
“Rhea’s just fine Honey. Mr. Bartlett’s been gone a long time now and was my third husband anyway. Everyone but the Father calls me Rhea. You all will be phoning him shortly? He says as you are to head to the Employment office today. Good. Can’t abide slackers and no accounts. Actors, well, you’re your own breed ain’t ya? I ought a know, used to be one myself. Which is why I know better than to rent to the likes of most of ‘em. Loads of theaters around here but figure they are swamped with people looking for jobs same as everywhere else. You fellas certainly wouldn’t look out of place in a Western picture, what with them beards and long hair and all. Was that what you were doing out in the park? Filming something? Father was a bit short on details, just said as I should make a place for ya and treat you kindly if I found you odd, what with being foreign like.”
Claire wondered if Rhea always ran on like this or if something about them was making her a bit nervous. She couldn’t help but smile as she stirred the cream in her coffee and inhaled the heavenly aroma. “Um, we were just day extras on a period piece for an associate of mine who needed some bodies for the scenery. I’m usually a nurse and these gentlemen are relatives of my husband who traveled with us from Scotland to make a new start in America. American Dream and all that? Father McDaniel is a friend of our family back home so we stopped in to see him and he recommended you as a central location to live in while we resettle.” she lied adding just enough of the truth to keep it straight for future reference.
“Oh Aye, the Father and I go way back.” Angus said smiling at Rhea and scratching his chin. Dougal choked on his coffee and Murtagh slapped him on the back.
“So, you were an Actress too Mrs., … Rhea?” Jamie grinned at her, pinking a bit about the tips of his ears at the use of her name and not her title. Claire, who thought Jamie’s grin would charm the birds from the trees, avoided looking at him directly, so as not to laugh outright at his fumble of her name.
“Heavens yes. I’m in loads of the Silents. Not much to it, just a bunch of making silly faces and pretending to say things, while actually saying something else. That is until the lip readers caught on. What a scandal that was! Came out here with Mack Sennett when he moved from New York. What a man! I was in The Sheik with dear Rudolph, may he rest in peace. Those photos up in the attic are from my career and from some of the famous people who have stayed here over the years. Had to give it up though. Mr. Bartlett did not want me hanging around loose sorts. Too many shenanigans for his liking. You could be an actress dear, you sure got the looks for it. Bet those golden eyes of yours would be something to see on the big screen. Red here would look good in a gangster show if ya cleaned him up a bit.” She said sitting down next to Jamie and patting his arm.
“Shouldn’t we be getting on with it now Claire?” Dougal said as he poured himself another cup. “I’m hungry. Where can I find some parritch Rhea?” he smiled his most charming smile at her.
“Oh, there’s a diner a block over Handsome. Can’t miss it. Foods not as good as mine, mind you, but it’s passable. No idea what parritch is though. If you’re not particular about what you’re having there’s a tamale stand up on the corner. Those are cheap, sort of filling, Mexican things. Mr. Andretti should be around with his truck around lunch time if you want Eyetalian. There’s Chinese right close too.”
Claire finished her coffee and took the mug to the sink. “Shall I wash these Rhea? Speaking of washing, can that be done here? Their kilts and some other items are in desperate need of it.”
“Don’t worry on it Sister. I’ll take care of the cups before my shows come on the radio. The washing machine is in the basement and the lines are out back to hang to dry. Don’t think we’ll be getting rain today or tomorrow. My bones would tell me if we were. There’s lines in the basement too if it does. Basements are rare in California but I am glad to have it. Cold storage down there as well.”
“Might I use the telephone now? Father McDaniel said to call when we were settled before we went about our day.”
“Certainly, it’s in my parlor through there. You all won’t be using the parlor for anything other than the phone though. That’s my private space to get away from it all. You can use the den for the radio or cards or reading with everyone else in the house. Don’t imagine you’ll convince anyone else to change the radio stations though and I won’t get involved in squabbles over it. Feel free to listen to the record collection. Most of them got left here by some musicians who couldn’t pay.”
Claire nodded and signaled to Jamie to come with her to the phone. He rose and placed his cup in the sink as well, following her lead.
The parlor had a comfy feminine feel to it with a squashy armchair next to a radio sitting on a side table. The telephone was on a small table on the opposite side. “Here Jamie, watch me and put your ear here next to mine on the other side of the receiver” she said as she took a piece of paper out of her handbag. She slowly dialed zero, making a production of it so he could see what she was doing. While the phone rang she explained “This is a telephone and the phone number that reaches Father McDaniel is on this paper.”
“Operator” said a voice in their ears.
“Yes Operator, Griffith 5599 please.”
“One moment please” and then a series of clicks were heard followed by ringing buzzing sound.
“Rectory, Father Joe McDaniel speaking” came next in that lovely Irish accent. Jamie started and looked at Claire with amazement written all over his face.
“Yes Father, Claire Fraser, calling as requested. Jamie’s on the line as well. We got here just fine and Tommy Flannigan was very kind to us. The Boarding House is grand. I am sure we will be happy here.”
“Well, Mrs. Bartlett’s a character to be sure Claire, but she has a heart of gold really. How are the laddies holding up? James? You think you will survive it all?” They heard him laughing as he said this and Claire nodded to Jamie to signal he should talk.
“Yes, Father I’ll do.” He said rather too loudly.
“You needn’t shout son. Just talk in your normal voice or maybe a wee bit quieter if you don’t want others to hear you. You’ll be knowing the ways of it in no time flat. You’ll need to see Mr. Blake at the Employment office. Ask for him in particular when you get through the line at the door. He’s told me he has some day labor at the new airport for you and the others that might last a week. Mostly clearing a field where they are putting in another runway. You won’t have to drive anything, just back breaking shoveling and clearing most likely. They pay daily at the end of your shift, and pretty good wages too. Claire, I’ve told Dr. Hernandez you will be there tomorrow at nine. He sounded very pleased to be getting some help. I think he can only pay you for three days a week though. So, you might want to be checking for something else too. I haven’t called the Pawn Shop yet as I imagine the money I gave you will make it for a week or more if your careful.”
“I will be Father, thank you again for everything you are doing for us. We would be lost without you.” She said as she smiled at Jamie who seemed to be getting over the shock of hearing the Father’s voice but not seeing him.
“Let me speak to James alone for a few minutes Mrs. Fraser and you be sure to call me in a couple of days with news of how it’s going. I won’t expect you for mass right away, but don’t be forgetting that I expect you to come now.”
“All right Father. Here he is.” She shrugged her shoulders and stepped away from the phone, wondering what he wanted from Jamie but not really worrying about it.
“Yes Father, I will. No, I havena. No, oh? Yes Father, Greek, Latin, French, Spanish, Ghalidgh, Gaelic and a bit of a few others. Certainly, in several languages as well. Thank you, Father, I had verra fine tutors. I’ve a good ear for languages and figures are no problem….”
Claire had taken a seat across the room and tried not to listen in, but it was fascinating watching him standing there, not completely at ease, but looking serious and studious. He was out of his element but so in control of himself it nearly took her breath away. This must be what he would be like as a Laird and not a stable hand, outlaw or soldier she thought. Composed, quiet, intent on the discussion with the Priest, he looked almost regal with his red gold mane shining in the light from a nearby window. The suit favored him so much she found her mouth watering at the thought of what was under it.
“Yes Father, I promise I will discuss it with her soon. Yes, I will get him for you.” Was the last thing she heard him say before he placed the receiver on the table and went back to the doorway calling to Dougal.
“Dougal, the Father wants to speak with you on the machine. Come here Man and I will show you how.”
Claire flinched, hoping Rhea hadn’t heard that. Ah well, she thought, there would be many more slip ups before it was all said and done she was sure. She watched as Jamie showed Dougal how to hold the phone and headed back to the kitchen. Angus and Murtagh were talking quietly and Rhea was nowhere to be seen.
“I think the Father is going to want to speak with each of you, so you might as well head in there. We’ll leave when you are done and find something to eat.” She collected their mugs and spoons decided to wash the dishes anyway, a small kindness, but a familiar chore she had always been rather fond of. It was a way for her to not have to think, just do. She handed Jamie a towel when he came to her side and pointed out the drainer. “When I rinse and put them in there, you take them out and dry them and set them on the counter please.”
He made a strange face at her, but took the hand towel. Angus snorted while rising from the table and Murtagh chuckled as he followed suit. “If Mrs. Fitz saw ye doin that she’d ha’e a fit” Angus said over his shoulder as they went into the parlor with Dougal.
“What did Father McDaniel want?” she asked, pretending that she hadn’t already figured out most of the conversation from his end and ignoring the need to say something catty to Angus.
“He just wanted to ken more about me and gi’e me some advice. Be encouraging I guess.” Jamie said, drying one of the cups gingerly in his large hands.
She could tell there was more to it as he wouldn’t look at her when he said this. He normally looked straight in her eyes whenever he said anything to her. Right from the beginning he had been open like that although there had been several times she hadn’t been able to read the expression on his face, or lack thereof.
“Well, that was kind of him. You’d tell me if there was more to it?”
“Aye Sassenach, dinna fash.”
TO BE CONTINUED.

Gothoughts - 3.15, How the Riddler Got His Name
SO!
I’ve decided to do a bit of a review for the newest episode of Gotham, along the lines of my comics and movie reviews. Spoilers, unsolicited opinions, and undignified squeeing behind the cut. :)
As far as I’m concerned, Gotham’s return with “How the Riddler Got His Name” is a home run. I know some fans were worried, looking at the earlier promos, that Oswald would be too quickly forgotten or we wouldn’t see the emotional fallout from his murder. Instead, what we get really surpassed my expectations, with some fantastic interplay between Ed and his hallucination of Oswald, as Ed struggles both to come to terms with what Oswald really meant to him, and to take the next step into truly embodying the Riddler.
Speaking of which, I love the fact that Ed knows who he is, but is struggling to become that. I love that, for him as it was for Oswald, the birth of the legend as we come to know him is not easy. I think that’s one of Gotham’s real strengths. While most supervillains do get their own origin stories in comics, I’ve found that a lot of versions then skip straight from the origin story to the villain as a fully-fledged threat, as if the decision to become a criminal meant you got a welcome basket with a pre-tailored costume and a starter pack of henchmen. I know that it’s often done to make the villains seem more mysterious and, therefore, more threatening, but I think there are a lot more storytelling opportunities in letting us see, not only Batman’s training and struggles and failures, but those of his rogues’ gallery, too.
Something that’s interesting about Ed’s origin story in particular: Okay, so Gotham always kind of rides this line between gritty deconstruction and comic book show, and sometimes teeters a little too far in one direction or the other. When I first heard Ed describe what he’s doing in this episode as “becoming a villain”, it made me wince. “Villain”, in this sense, is basically a metafictional concept, and it’s not one that people would generally apply to themselves. You know the saying, “Everyone is the hero of their own story”? When you make yourself a villain, you’re essentially making yourself an obstacle in someone else’s story, and in real life, people don’t tend to do that.
And Gotham is usually fairly realistic in this respect. I’m pretty sure this is the first time anyone in this show has called themselves “a villain” unironically. Mobsters like Carmine Falcone or Fish Mooney wouldn’t think of themselves that way – they’re powerful, ambitious businesspeople. Even someone unhinged like Jerome or Barbara would probably only say it in an ironic echo of how they think the world sees them. I don’t think Oswald, in real life, would have said it about himself. His path hasn’t been driven by the urge to become a villain, it’s been driven by the urge to rule Gotham. Even his becoming “the Penguin” was kind of unintentional. He claimed that persona, but he didn’t set out to construct it. (And hallucination!Oswald even unpicks this onscreen: he didn’t teach Ed to be a villain, he taught him to be Edward Nygma, “a man who could run the underworld and hide in plain sight”.)
But I have to say, this episode won me over in this respect. I came to realise that out of all the rogues in Gotham, Ed is the one for whom this explicit “becoming a villain” shtick actually works. I can see Ed deciding, “I recognise myself as a villain/recognise the villain in myself, and I will set out to embody him.” It’s a reflection of how Ed tends to approach life and interactions with people in general: it’s this attempt to apply high symbolism and abstract systems of rules to the real world. Which, incidentally, is also a pretty good description of how riddles work.
As for the way this episode explores Ed’s relationship with Oswald, I basically have nothing to offer but delighted shrieking. :) I was expecting Oswald’s “ghost” to be tormenting Ed, the way Kristen’s has in the past; the fact that Ed takes such genuine pleasure in seeing him (even to the point of thanking Oswald for being there, as if he’s real) and is even taking drugs to be able to see him – a pretty big departure for someone who’s as invested as Ed is in control – came as a pleasant shock. The moment where he finally says goodbye to Oswald, and admits how much he cares about and misses him, is genuinely heartwrenching. And hallucination!Oswald is a delight throughout, from his eating popcorn to his exasperation with Ed selecting Jim as his archnemesis. :) He’s wonderfully salty (as with his line about how he’s “not really a fan” of the view from the docks), but he also knows exactly where and how to slide the knife in under Ed’s defences. Robin Lord Taylor is a tour de force in this episode – his performance as hallucination!Oswald is an exaggerated version of Oswald (because this is Ed’s mental reconstruction), but still nuanced, and he’s just fantastic to watch. And holy shit, but that serenade makes me happy. Ed actually hallucinates Oswald, dressed in gorgeous clothes, singing him a sexy ballad under a red spotlight. I’m not only really pleased that the creators took it that far (making it pretty undeniable that Ed at least has some attraction towards his friend), I’m also impressed that they pulled it off. That scene could have so easily tipped over into being silly, but it’s executed with a deft hand and grounded in two really strong performances, making it erotic and eerie instead.
(Also it seems somehow cosmically unfair that anyone is as good looking as RLT, just saying.)
I’ll admit, I was underwhelmed by how the reveal of Oswald’s survival was handled. Granted, I don’t think anyone was actually going to be shocked, but I was hoping for something a bit more dramatic than him waking up in bed in an admittedly charming chintzy sweater. What, no surge upwards out of the water of Gotham bay, mirroring the first episode? Not even a scene of Oswald being discovered washed up on shore? Just, oh, hey, you’re awake, isn’t it handy that gunshot wound and the accompanying near-drowning weren’t fatal? I realise the episode packs a lot in and the creators probably didn’t want to spend too much time on the mechanics of how Oswald survived, but it still felt like a bit of a letdown. (However, pretty much the only letdown in a stellar episode, so I’m not too fussed.)
Speaking of Oswald’s survival: Ivy was also absolutely nowhere on my list of prospective rescuers. I assumed, as I think a lot of fans did, that the most logical person to pulls Oswald out of the harbour would be Fish. She believes in his potential, so she might well think he could be useful to her long-term; she may also feel like she owes him for sparing her; she’s got access to Hugo Strange’s revival technology; and it would open up some pretty heady symbolism (Fish fishing – hee – Oswald out of the water after he pushed her in, the maternal imagery of her bringing him back into the world). Jim was also a possibility, as was Gabe, or the Court of Owls (who’ve shown an interest in Oswald before), or even Selina. I never would have thought of Ivy, though, and it seems somewhat out of character for a woman (a girl, really) who’s never really shown much of an altruistic streak. (This wasn’t just a spontaneous moment of kindness, either – she’s apparently nursed him and hidden him for weeks!) However, I’ll admit that I’m intrigued. Oswald and Ivy make an odd pair, but one with a lot of potential. Both shunned as children for being different, both grown ruthless largely out of necessity, and both (as we’ve now learned about Ivy) with the capacity to be selfless, even self-sacrificing. I can see them as a team.
So, that takes care of the Nygmobblepot elements (the Nygmobbleplot, if you will) – what about the rest of “How the Riddler Got His Name”?
I think one of the standout elements, for me, is the rivalry that’s shaping up between Ed and Lucius Fox. We’ve seen them square off a few times before, providing a foundation for their evolution into archnemeses here, and I’m really glad that the show went in the direction of making Lucius Ed’s foil, rather than Gordon. It helps break up the recurring theme of “Jim Gordon is the central figure in everyone’s life”, which made some sense in the first season, when Jim was the only honest cop in the city (and therefore naturally the most likely to be complicating the life of your average Gotham rogue), but has started feeling increasingly forced. More than that, Lucius fits the role perfectly. He’s a lot more willing to pursue Ed through all the labyrinthine twists of his games than Harvey or even Jim would be. He’s as frighteningly brilliant as Ed, and (as Chris Chalk confirmed on Twitter), Lucius recognises a similarity in the way both their minds work. (Hell, they’ve also both scientists who’ve been on the receiving end of what Lucius has called the GCPD’s “fascistic meathead culture”, so I suspect Lucius may understand all too well some of the forces that shaped Ed.) And Lucius hasn’t given up on Ed, which I think is fascinating – especially as Ed seems shaken, at least temporarily, by Lucius’s sympathy. I’m so looking forward to seeing how this plays out.
Their confrontation on the stairs, playing mind games for Harvey’s life, is just brilliant. It’s a shining moment for Lucius – not just for the way he solves Ed’s puzzles, or even because he manages to best him at the riddles game by coming up with an answer Ed hadn’t thought of. It’s the fact that Lucius actually pieces everything else together just from the few, tortured fragments that Ed lets slip. And ohhhh, that moment where Lucius picks up that something’s wrong, that Oswald’s gone and Ed is coming unglued without him, that something happened. So good.
I also like how the riddles tie into the wider themes of the episode. Ed’s answers are all solitary, in keeping with his mindset (loneliness, an individual, a reflection), whereas Lucius’s are more upbeat. But Ed’s insistence that, “You have to come up with my answer,” mirrors what he’s been doing for the entire episode. He knows, deep down, that he killed a part of himself when he killed Oswald, he knows he can’t really replace him, but he’s still pushing to get an answer he likes better, to get his answer. (And of course, the answer to the third riddle being “a reflection” is fitting, as it’s normally a bit of poetic licence to say that your reflection “knows your every thought” because it mimics your expression, but for Ed, his reflection really does know – and is a manifestation of – his thoughts. And then the “reflection” imagery becomes terrifyingly literal in the next scene when Bruce spots his clone in the mirror. I love it.)
Incidentally, you could also call this episode “How Harvey Bullock Flirted Shamelessly with Lucius Fox for the Entire Length of an Investigation”, and it is glorious. I’m not saying I don’t love Jim Gordon, but I’m starting to wonder if we really need him back in Gotham, at least right away. I would watch the shit out of a show that was nothing but Lucius being a jaw-droppingly brilliant investigator and conducting Interrogation Via Weirding People Out, and Harvey, as his partner, showering him with fond looks and ten-dollar words (“Did you see how I used that word, ‘allocate’?”), fishing for compliments on his suits, and generally failing at pretending he doesn’t fancy Lucius rotten and also getting tied up occasionally because hello kink I didn’t realise I had.
I can’t wait to see where all this goes next week.
Random points:
I do have legitimate questions about why all scientists in Gotham work in big glass cages, but that’s by the by.
Robin Lord Taylor isn’t the only one showing off his acting chops here by playing with different versions of a character. David Mazouz is amazing at getting across the subtle distinctions between Bruce, clone!Bruce, and clone!Bruce pretending to be Bruce.
You have to wonder if Harvey ever just flops down at his desk and contemplates what his life has come to, that he’s now in charge of frantically dredging the river for the guy he once arranged to have shot and dumped in the river.
Speaking of which, I would have loved to be a fly on the wall when Harvey (presumably) first interviewed Ed after Oswald disappeared. Neither of them is all that keen to find him, but they’re both forced to pretend that they’re desperate to – and on top of that, they both loathe each other. That would have made for some interesting viewing.
There is no limit to my love for Ed’s fruit messenger. (Why IS he a bunch of grapes? Who knows? It’s brilliant.)
It’s probably a testament to how many gimmicky serial killers Gotham has that not one of the people who used to work closely with Nygma, know him as the riddle/puzzle guy, and know he’s murdered people connected him with this rash of puzzle-related murders.
It is pretty comical how much shabbier Harvey’s nicest suit is than anyone else’s suit. It’s also a little bit heartwarming. Remember when Harvey had a few Italian suits that had just wandered into his closet after they were confiscated during a bust? Now, his nicest suit is clearly something he bought on his un-supplemented, honest cop’s salary, and takes good care of. It’s this bit of meta sweetness.
This is such a weird thought, but – how did the Court duplicate Bruce’s clothes? Do they have an entire wardrobe based on his wardrobe (how?), and when he left the house some surveillance van called in to say, “It’s the black turtleneck and the three-quarter-length black coat today”? Or did someone run out and try and buy those clothes based on a photo, and dress clone!Bruce in them, all in about half an hour? How do you go out shopping in a city the size of Gotham for ten minutes and manage to exactly match clothes that could have been bought a year ago? Am I overthinking this? (The answer is yes.)
Is it just a thing in Gotham that when you want to test someone’s loyalty and maybe kill them, you take them to a cabin in the woods? At least Jim’s uncle isn’t trying to hold his hand romantically over the breakfast table.

Collision Course by Marie Harte Series: Body Shop Bad Boys #4 Published by Sourcebooks Casablanca Publication Date: January 2nd 2018 Genres: Contemporary Romance Pages: 354 Source: Publisher Format: eARC Goodreads Buy Online: Amazon ♥ Barnes & Noble ♥ Kobo ♥ iBooks
I received this book for free from the Publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
He’s always had a way with the ladies
She won’t give him the time of day
Sparks fly when two hearts in motion collide.
Florist Joey Reeves is working overtime to stay away from Lou Cortez, the ace mechanic with a reputation for irresistible charm. She’s a single mom with enough on her plate—the last thing she needs is entanglement with the hottest guy in town…
“Well, hello there.”
Joey glanced up and froze. The man who’d been haunting her sleep looked even better in the hard light of day.
“H-hello.” She coughed. The guys who worked at Webster’s Garage all looked larger than life, covered in tattoos, muscles, and that indefinable sense of danger they wore like a second skin. But this guy, the tall, Latin lover with dark-brown eyes and lips made for kissing, had ensnared her.
Review
Like most fans of this series, I was really looking forward to Lou’s story but not for the same reason. Lou did not have the troubled background of the other guys and his large number of female relatives made him very interesting to me. He is the quintessential Latin lover – gorgeous, hot, charismatic and a ladies’ man – and I wanted to know what kind of woman would trip him up. While Joey would not have been my first choice, there is something fitting about a man who has had his pick of the finest and most exotic beauties falling for a quiet, reserved florist. Thankfully, she was not so reserved once you got to know her and was able to hold her own with Lou.
Joey was a very admirable character in her own right. Having to take on a major responsibility at a very younger age meant that she was light-years more mature than her contemporaries and it showed in every one of her decisions. She worked hard to make a better life for herself and her son, in spite of the cost in terms of her relationship with her parents.
Watching Lou go from the smooth know-it-all who always offered his friends the best advice about women to a bumbling, slightly insecure man was very enjoyable, as was having his well-thought out plans about romance and relationships blown up by his feelings for Joey.
The dialogue was fun, and the banter and chemistry among the other characters made this a very entertaining book. There were a lot more secondary characters here, but they all added something to the story and made what would have otherwise been an okay story a lot more enjoyable. The cameos from characters from her other series was one of the highlights of the book for me.
Excerpt
Ten minutes and a text later, Joey drove to Becky’s house and planned to indulge in some girl time. Maybe Becky could help her understand her fascination for Lou.
She arrived at Becky’s soon enough. Her friend shared a condo with a teacher friend. As Joey entered, said teacher left with a smile.
“She’s got a date tonight.” Becky motioned to the coffee table, laden with wine, crackers, and cheese. “And apparently now so do I. Dig in.” Becky lowered her voice and said, suggestively, “Welcome to my pad, sweetness. Boom chicka bow bow.”
Joey laughed. “Stop. That only works when I’m the plumber or the delivery guy.”
Becky sighed. “Guess I’ll have to save that for Trent, who’s out of town this weekend. How the hell am I supposed to seduce him when he’s helping his grandmother move?”
“Aw, that’s so nice.”
“Nice ain’t sexy. Gah.” Becky munched on a cracker. “But I’m excited to hang with you. I can’t believe you finally got paroled. So Brandon the criminal is hanging with the other hooligans, eh? Way to dodge that bullet, Joey.”
“Funny.” Joey paused. “Ah, there’s one thing. I can’t stay past eight. I have a…date.”
Becky stared. “Not with sexy Lou again.”
Joey’s silence answered for her.
“Oh my God. Dinner must have gone well the other night. Tell me.”
Joey swallowed. “He was polite, charming. He looked amazing. He’s really built.” She flushed, feeling that “built” inside her all over again. “We talked then walked after dinner. He paid too. And he was so nice, so sweet. We held hands.”
“Romantic.” Becky sighed.
And then last night he bent me over the flower table and made me see stars. Yeah, romantic.
Becky hugged a pillow to her chest, her expression dreamy until her eyes narrowed on Joey’s face. “Why are you blushing so hard? I mean, your face is really pink.” Her eyes widened. “Holy crap. You had sex with him, didn’t you?”
“N-no.” She cleared her throat. “That’s a little personal, don’t you think?”
“Oh my God, you did. You did! Joey Reeves got some lovin’. Hot damn. It’s about friggin’ time!”
Still feeling overheated, Joey glanced up at her friend. “You can’t tell anyone.” She swore. “I can’t believe it happened. It just…I’m still trying to process it.”
“What’s to process? You fell for the magic in his man-wand.” Becky shrugged, as if it was no big thing. “Happens to the best of us. Well, except for me and Trent the Boy Scout,” she grumbled.
Joey was stuck on man-wand. “What did you call it?”
Becky burst out laughing. “If you could see your face. Hey, you should hear half the things they call it. Fuckstick, staff of life, lady’s lollipop. I could go on.”
“Please, don’t.” Joey grimaced.
“I know, right? Man-wand is so much better.” Becky paused. “Is it, Joey? Is it better? Or did you lollipop him? You know, like what we in the know call it—the hand and blow.”
Joey’s face threatened to melt clean off. She had a feeling she could fry eggs on her cheeks. “I can’t believe I’m having this conversation.”
“Me neither.” Becky grinned. “You’re like beet-red right now. Or fire-engine red, maybe. Hey, did you guys remember to wear a ‘raincoat’?” Becky snickered.
“Stop talking, please.”
“Just tell me this. Do you want to do it again? As in, was it any good? Tell me, and I’ll shut up.”
“It was amazing, okay?” Joey growled. “So great I can’t stop thinking about doing it again. And I don’t tend to do well with men and sex.”
“That’s because you live like a nun in the Church of Reeves, presided over by Father Andrew and Sister Amy. God, it’s a wonder you have a kid with all the guilt your parents keep throwing on you. And after eight—”
“Nine.”
“—years you’d think they’d let it go.”
“So maybe I was just desperate. It was a one-shot deal, right?” So why am I thinking of being with him again when I know it’s a mistake?
Becky shrugged and ate more crackers and cheese. “I think you should be desperate again. If you want him, have him. You have a right to be happy. Take joy in his man parts. Go forth, just don’t prosper.”
Joey choked on a laugh. “Yes, Mom.”
“Ouch.”
“Don’t worry. We were safe.” Rather, he was safe. She’d been so far gone she hadn’t thought about protection until it was almost too late, which was just stupid. Granted, she wouldn’t have babies with Lou while on birth control. But she could always chance a disease with an unknown. She’d been so wrapped up in the moment, lost to her body’s needs.
But Lou had thought ahead.
Which put his actions in a different light. Had he expected to have sex with her?
“What’s that look?” Becky asked.
“He was ready for it. Us, I mean.”
Becky looked confused.
“He was prepared.”
“Jesus, Joey. You can say condom and not burn in hell. So he was prepared. Good for him.”
“You think?”
“Who cares why he had the condom? He had it, you had fun. And if you’re lucky, you’ll have more fun tonight.” Becky poured herself some wine. “Have some for me, would you? Because I’m clearly not getting any.” She cocked her head, considering something. “Unless Will’s home.”
“Becky.”
Becky laughed. “Nah. Will’s in Italy this month.” She chuckled. “Kidding, kidding. I’m wanting Trent. I am. Really.”
They laughed some more, and when Joey excused herself for the bathroom, a new text popped up. Lou had decided on the place. An address in Rainier Valley, where he’d mentioned he lived.
She didn’t know what to think, so she took care of business and blanked her mind.
She returned to the living room. “He invited me to his place.”
Becky blinked. “You were gone maybe five minutes.”
“He just texted me.”
“So go.”
“To his place?”
“Why not? Is he rapey or something?”
“No.” He’d been a perfect gentleman since she’d known him. And even after sending her to heaven, twice, he’d ended their impromptu session at the flower shop with a hug and by walking her to her car. “No. He’s nice. Sexy. Too—”
“He’s exactly what you need.” Becky nodded. “Give me your phone.”
