Well, Midnight is perpetual brainrot for me tbh, plus some AUs of it I have playing in my head, but other than that I am currently thinking of an AU looooosely based off of How To Train Your Dragon....... yeah. It hit me last night :) Mumbo as the awkward wet cat of a younger brother to the dragon-hunting village's chief (Xisuma) who makes tools and invents new contraptions to be used, Grian as his best friend and biggest supporter who also happens to have a huge huge huge life-as-we-know-it altering secret (not to mention the secret mega crush he has on Mumbo), and Scar as an Elf from the opposing dragon-positive Elven Kingdom (alongside Gem, who may or may not be playing the role of his sister and heir to the Elven throne) and BDubs, among others). Loke I said, it is.... very loosely based LMAO-

But. You know. It's not suuuuuuper fleshed out but it is in my brainspace 😌

Hello everyone! I have not seen a ship bracket dedicated to polyam ships, especially for ships in the Traffic Life Series / Empires / Hermitcraft sphere (and occasionally other adjacent smps) so I am creating one. Obviously, this is characters not creators and this is for fun/entertainment, so please keep this lighthearted! Now, may the most beloved polyam ship win!

If there is a ship name attached to it, it is usually because the person who nominated the ship used that ship name. Not all ships have ship names that I know of/that I was given so they may be “wrong” or whatever else. Feel free to leave a reply or throw it in my ask box for me to add a ship name if one has it.

Once we get to the end, if all runs well and people enjoy this, there is a chance to run another bracket with a new set of submissions. New ships can be added and old ships who lost can make a comeback.

The bracket is created at random. There is only intervention in round one if the ships pitted against each other are the same plus/minus a person or if the ships feel too unevenly weighted. If so, I dragged one ship and threw it up or down and left it where it landed if that was better than before. I am human, though, and will miss stuff/make mistakes, so don't be upset if something isn't quite how you want it. This will place popular ships against each other, but I can always run another bracket after this one to give your favorite polyam ship another chance against other ships :D

Winning ships do not get run again. They claim their spot in the Winners list and then get to rest to allow other ships to have a chance to shine :D

SwedishBeans: Joel is the confident one. This is kind of funny, because Iskall is the better people reader. Iskall is fully aware its mutual, but is too nervous to make a move. Joel is just crazy enough to make a shot on the dark.

SmallEtho: whenever Joel says something stupid, Etho will look at him with the most "dead inside" expression ever. Meanwhile, internally, he's giggling like a 12 year old school girl with a crush. This still happens even when they've been dating for YEARS. Joel can tell tho, and thus continues

Mumscarian: Scar has the best puppy dog eyes known to man. Grian will groan, while Mumbo will try to ignore it, but at the end of the day, Scar will get his way.

Ethubs: despite not dating, they've been obviously pining for so long that it's become normal for other to refer to them as boyfriend's or husbands. They got so used to it that they stopped correcting people. Sometimes they refer to each other as boyfriend or husband just because they're so used to it

xBeans: Joel makes xB blush SO HARD, but xB would never ever ever admit it, and does his best to always cover it up. He regularly makes people laugh at him because of it.

ZITS: People around them genuinely do not know wether or not these four are dating. Sure, they flirt, they kiss each other on the cheek, they make dirty jokes. But at the same time, they call each other dude and bro exclusively, noones ever seen them so much as kiss or even hold hands. ZITS discovered this, and have started abusing this and just confusing the rest even more. Whenever someone asks them, they give confusing non-answers like "I don't know, are we?" Or "It sure looks like it, huh?" Or just say it with such a tone of voice that noone knows weather its sarcasm or not. The only person who knows is Gem, because she walked in on them on accident. She has decided to join in on the fun and will pretend she also doesn't know.

Mumskall: the last person to know they are dating was Mumbo.

HI yes I've been thinking about it on and off all day LOL

It starts so fanfiction meet-cute. Poor overworked Mumbo who would never have any time for romance in his life has everything turned on its head when one day when walking back from work he's caught in the middle of a horrible villain attack. Not just that -- he's captured! Briefly, of course, before Hotguy rescues him.

Mumbo just about dies, right then and there. How pathetic would that have been? Has it really been that long since someone held him? (Yes. It has.)

When Hotguy sets him down he does his typical pull down of his glasses to give Mumbo a little wink and Mumbo almost faints, missing the look of genuine intrigue and affection on Hotguy's face.

Naturally, Mumbo becomes immediately and deeply infatuated with him. Hotguy symbolizes a fantastical escape from Mumbo's kinda shit life. His hours are long, his work isn't that fulfilling, and his roommate is LOUD and back at weird hours of the night, always bumping into things and waking him up. In his head, he lets Hotguy steal him away from that all....

Mumbo obviously thinks he's delusional for this. Hotguy does NOT think about him, because he's just some frazzled student who could hardly say thank you to the guy! But he gets to be a bit parasocial, as a treat. At least until his lease is up.

But Scar does think of him -- a lot. A cringe amount, for a superhero. It's inevitable they run into each other again and Hotguy offers to walk him home. From that moment forward it's over for both of them.

The decision to keep their eventual relationship private is a mutual one -- Scar doesn't want to subject Mumbo to that kind of press, nor does Mumbo really want to deal with it. Of course -- Mumbo emphasizes -- Scar would be worth it, but he would rather not.

A bit torn on where Grian is in this. He's either Cuteguy/another hero, or an extremely hero-critical reporter. Either way, he's definitely Mumbo's roommate who Mumbo is desperate to keep his fantasies/relationship private from.

There's a Mumscarian path here, too. If Grian is Cuteguy, he starts bothering Mumbo as Cuteguy to try and scare him off of Hotguy in an effort to keep Scar somewhat focused on his job. If he is a reporter, he wants to use his roommate's apparent relationship with a superhero to get some kind of dirt on the guy, because there's no way someone like that is all good. He's probably an asshole, Grian thinks.

ALSO a potential socmed angle which is sooo self indulgent for me specifically. I love you outsider pov social media fics. Would involve Mumbo and Scar's relationship leaking and ruining Mumbo's whole entire time because now he can't leave the house without someone stopping him on the street and asking about how Hotguy Really is. Plus sooo many unsolicited opinions about Scar's taste in men. Somewhat warranted.

i would absolutely love to share a rant!

all the characters are so psychologically fucked up in such a realistic way that i didn't see represented much. grian venting to tango about feeling left out. the fact that he felt left out at all over something so small. they're so codependent and i love it.

and then there's scott and jimmy's dynamic. scott kissing jimmy and then jimmy venting to grian and then grian just responding with "HE DID WHAT??????" and then at the cafe. the idea of someone doing something they shouldn't have and then having a panic attack over a third party's opinion on it is so... idk how to say it. like i said, a type of fucked up that you don't see talked about much and i relate so hard to it. it's clear scott's probably trying his best out at least trying a lot to not hurt jimmy but he's failing miserably and i don't think he even realizes it. and like. yeah. ive been there. i don't actually know why scott broke up with him but i get the vibe it was supposed to be like. to help jimmy in some way. like "oh wait ive been toxic maybe i should end this for his sake". but doing that obviously hurt jimmy, especially since he didn't say *why* he did it. and scott obviously did something really drastic and sudden so he's not doing well either and he really wants to go back to jimmy. he knows he's being manipulative and it's not on purpose but in trying to stop and be better he keeps making things worse. and like. this is all a side thing. this fic is mostly about mumscarian and you threw in this flower husbands sideplot but it's still so fleshed out and so *real*.

and speaking of the mumscarian thing the way you write their friendships, especially grian and mumbo's is amazing. it's not like. a stepping stone to a romantic relationship even though they are going to end up in one. very "not more than friends, different from friends" vibes /vpos. it doesn't feel like they're ending up in a romantic relationship. it feels like they're making their relationship romantic and i love that so much.

grian just texting mumbo that he's bored gives such hcs7 vibes and like he yeah they're so codependent and it's so obvious from grian's side my god

and the way you write pearl is amazing, she's got this sibling energy and it's great.

the way you write all of them is amazing actually. i can hear everything they say in their voices. the clockers are on point, especially scar and bdubs.

I wanna break this ask into chunks and there's bits of your ask I wanna respond to directly, so...

I'm glad you think so! I definitely feel like I'm being a little bit risky with how I'm presenting some of the, I suppose, human consequences of being human?

I think a lot of what fandom (in general) consumes gets a little over-sanitised these days. Our favourite characters aren't allowed to be flawed like real people, they must be flawed in a way that is either endearing, entertaining (sarcastic or snarky), or easily forgivable.

But that's not always that interesting when it comes to wanting characters we can truly relate to?

Grian gets upset he's left out not just because he has Trauma™, but because he does have a co-dependancy on Mumbo that borders on unhealthy. Tango tells Grian to, in not so many words, get over himself and try and have fun - not because he knew Grian would respond well to it, but because he's blunt and doesn't know how to comfort people gently. Bdubs makes fun of Scar for being disabled, because he knows that everybody in that group chat understands he's joking and that his comments will never leave that group chat (in-world that is, of course, everybody who reads the fic will read them).

And Scott for example, is not a very well-liked character amongst readers at the moment, but he's absolutely one of my favourite to write. You put it pretty well here:

he knows he's being manipulative and it's not on purpose but in trying to stop and be better he keeps making things worse.

Like yes, exactly. He's trying to do better, but the actions he takes that he thinks (or is being co-erced into believing via mental illness) will make things better, keep making things worse and he doesn't really understand how to do it right. And haven't we all been in that position before?

And yet up until chapter 17, we've only ever seen into their dynamic from the outside. We've only ever seen Scott's actions from Jimmy's POV or from the POV of someone who cares about Jimmy.

And somehow it's Jimmy, of all people, defending Scott.

It's absolutely fascinating to see readers reactions and I'd be so happy to talk about this forever and ever and ever, hehehe.

And what you said about Mumbo and Grian's relationship, here:

I'm actually SO glad you feel that way about them, because that's exactly the way I feel about them, too. They're not just friends, so much as they're Grian and Mumbo. The idea of them being friends almost suggests an alternative of them being not friends and I just don't there's a way in this world that they can exist and be without one another. So yes, I love this a lot and I love that you feel that way about them.

It's me Elven bedazzled piss and I'm here to talk abt mumscarian cannibals.

Scar is the flesh guy, he's not the biggest fan of organs as they're a bit too slimy for him but he won't say no to a still beating heart (it has to be beating tho or he will not eat it).

Mumbo is obviously the blood guy but he's also the only one out of the group that actively enjoys rotten flesh (Scar will eat it if he has to and G doesn't even touch any fleshy bits). He claims it's because it tastes better than normal flesh but no one believes him.

Speaking of Grian, he eats the organs. Most if not, all of them. He tends to avoid the intestines when they're raw because he doesn't wanna get sick from improperly digested food. Also he is the only one out of the group that will not use tools to excavate his meal, dawg just shoves his hands in the body cavity.

And together they would be the worst morticians ever <3 Thank you for coming to my Ted talk.

ahhh i just wanted to say i love starboy SOOO much!!!! i did not/still dont know anything about f1 but the way you write it is so easy to follow along with and read!!! i love how you write the characters, especially scar/grian/joel/lizzie, you write them so so sooo flawlessly... i love how it seems like were there with scar in the moment of everything going on and how you describe everything from his perspective. i also LOVE how you write scar and grian especially because they both seem just so *real* and *raw* and i usually never see that from fics. the way you write is just so in detail that it really allows the reader to imagine everything thats happening and i LOVEEE that!!! i also love how you write grian and mumbos friendship, like they obviously care about each other so muchhh and i love how the readers able to see that even through scars perspective!!!!! esp the scene after grian fell asleep watching topgun and mumbo helping him lay down into a more comfortable position,,, and how they hugged when grian finally got p1 😭😭❤️ NOT TO MENTION THE LATEST CHAPTERRRR AND SCAR AND GRIANS FIRST KISS????? the goal of the fic is real and raw! it’s an unusual setting (maybe not for me considering this is my second racing centric fic) but everything that happens is a product of the environment! the wins from his own team left scar feeling bitter at times, but watching grian win had him so proud he knew he’d get in trouble w his own team if he showed it lol. it’s all about where they are and it makes me sooo happy (like you would not believe) when people who aren’t f1/sports fan still enjoy the fic!

last ch was a lot and contained a lot of really vital stuff that i couldn’t wait to see the reactions of. grian finally opening up is so important to me and scar letting it happen in its own time is a huge part of why grian begins letting him in, which is evidently not something he’s used to at all. mans has been through it in this universe

as for the questions: i don’t have an upload schedule but i try to churn out the chs when i have time. it fits that valentine’s was right before midterms season for me so i got to get something out before i get swamped by all that 🥲 i don’t like to let a full month go by without posting but we’ll see how my semester keeps going lol

Scarian, Mumscarian, Convexian, etc kids would have SUCH a huge extended and fun family with the hermits and life series members that aren't on that server Hermits arguing that THEY Will be the hatchlings favorite uncle, aunt or whatever term they prefer. Wanting to help out and babysit when they can Each having their own style of helping with the kids. Like Bdubs is definatly a fun uncle who may or may not allow the kids to do things that their parents. Aren't To Keen On, at least wait till they are older bdubs my god! X being one to keep them in line more since he knows their parents are chaotic. And the last thing he needs is more chaos, but he's so doting too Cleo is similar to Bdubs but not to the extreme he is, she definately is teaching them about zombies and how to make statues like she does. Just imagine they make these little statues to take home to their dads which has most of them blubbering. Though Cub can keep his emotions in check at least till the kids are out of site There are SO many different things the Hermits can get up to with the hatchlings and what they can teach them Pearl obviously gets first dibs, she proclaimed this herself. And since she's so close with Grian and them, that obviously means she's the best aunt out of all of them 🌿

I know right?! The hatchlings would grow up with so much knowledge in so many different aspects because of the family that is the hermits.

Cub receiving a statue, excusing him self to another room- lets a single tear fall at how proud and happy he is this his hatchling gave him a little gift like this- tryna hold it together before going back out and thanking them smiling super happy

Like, just imagine Cub looking over them years after everything settled or in a little gap of peace, happy for Scar for finding happiness and love, but sad that he can’t be part of it.

I like to think that Cub and Scar had that “There is nothing worse than meeting the perfect person at the wrong time”

The unintentional betrayal Cub had done to Scar, can’t earn back the time Scar lived in fear of betrayal and abandonment.

They could obviously still have feelings for one another, but what is love without trust?

Everyone knows I love a good angst mmm but I love a good happy ending even more. That being said, if Cub ever does join the polycule, it would be WAY into the future, beyond the end of the series, when they've had time to reconcile everything. So Midnight won't ever be explicitly Mumconvexian (unless I write some self indulgent future fics) and as far as the main series goes I'll probably leave it open ended to how Mumscarian's relationship with Cub can go, but I'm a bit of a romantic when it comes to fictional men and, as someone who had a bit of a "childhood romance" (as much as literal children can have, anyway), the idea of two people who were "right person, wrong time" coming together again, finally at the right time, is just so... mmm.

Now there are absolutely YEARS of this, Cub being the "family friend" who is so so so happy that Scar has finally found a place that he's happy, finally has that family he always wanted and just wishing he could be part of it, so you're definitely right at least for a WHILE.

So the thing with Scar and Cub is that... things will never be the way they were before, but that doesn't mean they can't find forgiveness and rebuild trust, rebuild some kind of relationship again. It would take years to do (on Scar's side) but I'm a sucker for stories of forgiveness and moving on. And at its core, that's what Midnight is; it's a story about moving on from the past, about forgiving (others and your self), it's about breaking cycles and confronting the darkest parts of yourself- and of others- and finding it in you to love anyway. It's about not erasing the past but learning from it, growing and looking to tomorrow instead of living in yesterday. It's a story of grief and loss and hope and dreams and love.

And yes, there are things that can't be forgiven, but everyone gets to make their own choices on that.

As far as Cub's unintentional betrayal- there is time for Cub to prove to Scar that the way he thought things were, wasn't how they were. There's time for him to prove that he was Scar's friend because he wanted to be, time to show him that what they had wasn't fake, to prove that he really did love Scar as much as any fourteen year old could love another. And life's too short to linger in the past. It's been more than fifteen years by now, and really... Scar is so tired of being afraid and alone, and now he isn't alone anymore and he's not afraid anymore, and nothing will ever erase those years but god, he just wants to move on from it already. And despite it all, Scar misses Cub.

They haven't had time to talk about it. They haven't had time to even begin trying to come back from it- but that doesn't mean they never will.

And honestly, after what I'm about to put Cub through, I think Cub deserves to be loved hjgfdjkkjfsd-

hey hello hi!!1 i just saw your tags talking abt an atla au and i'm vibrating at speeds unknown to man. would u like to talk abt that au a bit??

OMG YEAH!! ok ok ok so so so the atla au was somethign me and some anons were brainstorming over about on the @mumscarian sideblog-- so its mumscarian oriented obviously LMAO. Anyways this au was set in an established fire nation colony on earth kingdom soil -- im thinking somewhere around where Haru liv ed, or some area like the Freedom Fighter's place.

Anyways, the main plot is as goes: Mumbo and grian are firebender soldiers sent to occupy this colony, scar is a closeted earthbender who keeps wandering into the colony even though he's been kicked out several times for fraud. He sells bits of fancy glass, regular rocks like quartz, and jennamite (the rock from the Bumi episode) as 'magical crystals'.

The locals are fond of him, even though they know the rocks don't do shit, but the crystals are pretty, and the jennamite sure does taste good. But the fire nation is annoyed and dont like him so they kick him out. And Grian and Mumbo, as the standard foot soldiers of the firenation, are often put in charge of doing the actual kicking out. And so on and so forth, i talk about this part more right here, but they become Friends! But then gasp Scar gets uncovered as an earthbender and arrested. and you know what that means… PRISON BREAK TIME!!!

Scar doesnt get sent to any of the same prisons in canon, but its the same idea -- surrounded by water, nothing to bend, ect ect. But! The escape plan does not go as the typical canon-- they actually work in the fire nation army, and it doesn't take much to be mixed in with the other grunts working at the prison -- they just have to forge some documents so that they dont get chased down as deserters for leaving their post.

Instead of the typical canon 'lets break out by BLOWING UP THINGS and FIGHTING OUR WAY OUT." they're gonna break Scar out via trickery and diplomacy and maybe a little bit more forging documents. But what ACTUALLY HAPPENS is: Become prison guards -> find scar -> why has scar become the leader of the meanest gang in here -> why is he getting extra meals from the other guards -> wait what do MEAN youve made friends with the guards-> oh fuck fuck we fucked up a prison guard thing and now we're under surveillance -> we have essentially imprisoned ourselves -> scar. scar can you help us. -> what do you mean that you already had an escape plan -> what do you MEAN your plan was just 'ask the guards nicely' -> HOW DID THAT WORK -> profit. i guess???

Here's some fun, non-to-lightly spoilery Rift AU thoughts for everyone!

So Ren in Rift AU is inspired by the faon interpretation [maybe closer to canon? I havent watched s7] of Mayor Scar mixed w the Red King from 3rd Life - Specifically, Ren is inspired by @mochiwrites's Scar in her Good Crimes AU [Which if you haven't read you ABSOLUTELY should]. I just love how she wrote Scar to be publicly one way and Privately another, and while I certainly don't imagine that Ren the King is quite as beloved, the inspiration is there.

Originally, Rift AU was tagged w Watcher Grian but I changed that because I want to mess with the Rift as it's own separate force and leave the Watchers for something else. I think the Watchers [And Listeners! *looks at Martyn*] function more as an ancient, ANCIENT religion, maybe even older than the ancient cities.

Also another original idea that's been put to the side for now is that the Warden was a watcher - I don't know where I was originally going with that idea, but it was my first pivot after deciding Grian wasn't going to be the watcher.

For anyone curious, and because I don't know if I'll name it directly in the stories or just leave it more ambiguous, I'm basing Scar's mobility issues and chronic pain off my own experiences with Cerebral Palsy, among other things. I have a very mild for of Cerebral Palsy that left me with a weaker right side and mobility issues and I absolutely wanted to make sure Scar was still disabled even if he isn't wheelchair bound. I imagine that he certainly has a wheelchair for bad days, but those would be like. Really bad days. The staff - to - cane that he has, made out of the same magical wood as his tree, is probably good for most of the sort of bad days.

Rift AU actually started as a way for me to explore sculk and ancient cities in fiction, which is funny given that we are now 17k in and counting with no mention of either. I have plans for it, but the story needed more work up than I was originally anticipating, which is great! I'm really enjoying returning to my roots with fanfiction, which is the whole reason I started writing Rift AU in the first place

Obviously I'm sort of picking and choosing what elements from hermitcraft [and the life series] I want to include in Rift AU but I am a little bit grumpy that I started writing it before I really fully understood the king plot [When I started, I had only watched Grian and Etho. Now I've caught up on Ren, Impulse, Mumbo, and Cleo, with plans to watch Pearl, Tango, Zedaph, and Doc next. I also really want to watch Beef and Iskall lol] because now I really wanna jam the whole royal council shenanigans in there and I'm not gonna be able to without probably retconning Scar and Ren's relationship which I refuse to do!

Obviously, Mumscarian and Treebark are in the story, and there's also going to be platonic Soup Group and platonic Team ZITS [bc. Skizz deserves to be here. I love him]. I won't tell you ALL of the pairings that end up in the story because a. I feel like we're be here all day but b. some of them are spoilers but I AM planning on having Solidaritek [Apparently team ranchers is only for platonic or something???] and ZedBeef and also Ethubs all make their own appearances. There might even be some like short stories following a few of the other couples in the story because I have attachments to Ethubs in particular. IDK if you can tell but Etho is my favorite hermit and I used to watch him all the way back in 2011 on his singleplayer world. I remember the boat dispenser. My baby girl.

One of these days I will genuinely type up an essay about my latent energy theory but in case anyone else is interested here's a very short tldr version: Redstone, Glowstone, End Rods, debatably sculk [I havent decided if it falls into the same category yet tbh], etc etc all power themselves via latent energy. That latent energy is compatible with electricity in some way, as evidenced by the fact that lightning rods can be used to power redstone machines, but it's different. More in between electricity and magic - either because it actually is or because it's not as understood by the people who work it. That same latent energy is the stuff magic feeds off, like is seen in Changing of the Season to help rejuvenate Scar. Whatever it is is old. Older than the Ancient Cities since they knew to build redstone machines to distract the Warden. It's older than the end cities, too, since end rods exist. Arguably it has always been and will always be around in some way.

Also this might not interest anyone else but thoughts on vampires and elves. Vampires are more closely related to Zombies, whereas Elves [Who are Fae, which means the Vex are included here] are more closely related to Endermen than anything [<- that will come up again] - and then the Warden and sculk are like. Very distant cousins of vampires. Sort of. Their trees connect somewhere.

Love languages for mumscarian because I’ve been thinking about it

Scar’s is obviously physical touch, be it holding hands or hugging or just sitting as close as possible- he’ll practically hang off the other two in public.

Mumbo’s is quality time. He’s content to spend the day watching Grian and Scar work on a build and he Constantly demands movie nights (which are fine by Scar, it means he gets an excuse to suggest horror movies and cuddle up close to them)

Grian’s is giving gifts. He *loves* finding things that remind him of both Scar and Mumbo, and they both have necklaces with one of his feathers on it. They’ll often find things they need for their builds in chests or shulkers left at their front door and though there’s no note, they both know who it’s from. 🍄

I AGREEE. I also like to think Scar's is also gift giving. He likes buying them things they need, or he just see's something he knows the other will love and just grabs it and gives them it

Grian would totally just add his feathers to a lot of things, that the other two can wear. I bet Mumbo and Scar have like a whole box full of stuff they can wear that has Grain's feathers on it someway
