ROTJ ruled, as usual— it has more flaws than my beloved ESB for sure, and more than ANH, but the highs are so good and so rewarding in a way that never gets old.
One of my favorite parts this time around comes after Anakin tells Luke it's too late for him to ever go back (a belief explicitly shared by Palpatine, Yoda, and Obi-Wan, but not by Luke until that moment—and only for a little while). Luke withdrawing into "Then my father is truly dead" is always great, especially the shot of him in the lift, surrounded by taller men in Imperial uniforms with his shoulders and back rigidly straight and the warmth in his expression gone. But the thing that really makes it is not ending the scene with Luke disappearing, but letting that rejection linger by shifting to Anakin and just letting seconds tick by as he contemplates what's just happened.
He doesn't actually do much—just walks a few steps and reflects. His body language isn't overwhelmingly despondent or anything. Obviously we can't see his face. And yet we feel how hard that hit and how much he's dwelling on it. He's all but encouraged this response from Luke and yet it feels like it's really, truly sinking that this isn't at all what he wants from Luke.
He doesn't want Luke to call Palpatine (or anyone) master, I don't think; he just considers it inevitable, the only possibility other than Luke's death. And for Anakin, death above all is the thing to prevent.
Everything Anakin says is about things he or they must do, or what cannot be escaped, or destiny, but all of these things he says to Luke are ultimately about Not Getting Yourself Killed. There's no sense of choice beyond submission or destruction.
(Anakin does know he's done terrible things, clearly, but his takeaway from that understanding is that he's gone too far to turn back. That sense of powerlessness, the inability to make a choice that really means anything, pervades his characterization in ROTJ in particular.)
But I feel like, while he still feels powerless after Luke leaves, there's also this sense of a slow, half-buried epiphany. This isn't what he wants.

Honeymoon finale - Solution Nine
[G'raha] : "So you have been asked to fight for Solution Nine's entertainment... My love, it's not that I doubt your judgment, but are you sure this is something you should get involved in?" [Arsay]: "If I can use my skills to uplift the people of this place, don't see why I shouldn't, yeah? Plus, I'll need to find something to do while Shtola's investigating the gate." [Y'shtola]: "And here I've been preparing for your inevitable begging to join." [Arsay]: "Even I can admit there's work you do better alone. ..That said, I'll miss you every tick." [Y'shtola]: "I'll be but a call away, dear. What of you, Raha?" [G'raha]: "Likely continuing our in-depth report of the golden city; for the Student's records. Should the opportunity present itself that I may spectate a match featuring my most beloved star however..." [Y'shtola]: "Then you shall ensure you cheer her on with enough fever for the both of us." [Arsay]: "Heh! I'll be sure to keep you apprised of my schedule. ... <sighs> I guess this means our vacation is over. It's been fun, ay? Every moment I share with you both is a memory I will forever treasure; but these past two weeks... I've no words for how wonderful it's been. Shtola, Raha, I love you." [Y'shtola]: "And I, you." [G'raha]: <nods> "Beyond measure." [Arsay]: "Now, with this being our last night of fun and all; I've an idea in mind on how to spend it."

this may be a hot take, but - for me, adaptations extricating kon's creation from its original circumstances (i.e. superman was dead!!) bothers me almost as much as the lex retcon
#like. i find it infuriatingly fascinating that both major adaptations of kon so far (yj cartoon and titans) have gone with#“superman wasn't dead AND he's half lex”#i suspect my adventures with superman is gonna do this too. and it just makes me...idk‚ sad i guess. melancholy. wistful. also mad.#i feel like a lot of the tragedy of kon's character comes from him being made to BE superman! not superboy! superMAN!#(one day. one day i'll write my essay “Kon-El and The Burden of Purpose”)#but talking SPECIFICALLY about adaptations. it grinds my gears that the standard formula has become clex clone baby#all while clark isn't even dead. i think it's a disservice to kon's origins AND you'd get a better fresher story by.....not doing that.#i'm not blindly ambitious enough to truly hope we'll get a genuine as-it-was-written kon adaptation but i'd settle for one or the other#like. i hate the lexcon BUT. lex creating kon after superman dies COULD be an interesting story MAYBE. in the right hands#OR. fuck that bald bastard‚ get him outta here‚ and have cadmus create a clone of superman without superman even dying#which transposes kon's creation from “the world needs a superman and the US government is stepping up! albeit a little unethically” to#“the US government believes america needs its own superman. so they made one‚ with full intent to replace the original”#which could be a verrrry interesting way to modernise the relationship between superman and american imperialism.#but idk. i just don't know. i love kon so much and i would love to watch an adaptation of him that doesn't piss me off#AND if i see ONE MORE “teehee clex babytrap!” tweet i'm gonna start shooting hostages. don't fgucking test me#sae originals#kon#kon el#superboy#conner kent

I've seen some talk saying that the whale from gaslight district (the one that the main characters live inside of) is a reference to Jonah and the whale, and while I agree with that, I would also like to raise you all: the whale and the Smiling Dead as a reference to Moby Dick.
Mel, obviously, is Ishmael in the situation, the odd one out in her group, even if what made her and Ishmael unique was different. Ishmael was the one person to survive the Pequod, whereas Mel is the one person in her family destined to die over and over again, forever. You could also make the argument that both are the youngest and most starry-eyed of their respective groups.
And, more importantly, there's Ken. There's already lots of interesting symbolism going on with his character, and this just adds to it. He's built his entire life around this whale; he lives there, works there, and his entire family, including the girl he's dedicated his life to protecting, live there with him. He's shown to be a bit of a madman in the sense that he gets emotional outbursts that prevent him from thinking straight, just like how Ahab would violently shout and swear violence against the whale. Ahab was also missing his leg, while Ken is missing the skin on his arm and has brain damage. There's also the fact that Ken is a butcher, he kills things and takes apart their bodies, a small-scale replica of what was happening in the whaling industry at the time.
While I don't think Mud and Breadhead are any specific members of the crew (since typically in references to Moby Dick the only relevant characters are Ishmael and Ahab), but if you wanted to, you could make the argument that Mud is Starbuck, what with him being second-in-command and trying to urge Ken to do things like let his daughter go out, even if he never fully pushes back against his little brother. Breadhead could be Queequeg, since he's the kindhearted one who cares about Mel (although their relationship is not romantic in the way that Ishmael and Queequeg's is implied to be). Or maybe Jack was Queequeg, sank for Mel's benefit and safety, asking her what she was going to do after all this.
Anyways. This isn't a theory, it's just a little tidbit. I like the number of literary references in Gaslight a lot. There's also something to be said about the fact that both Gaslight District and Moby Dick are based off of biblical medias, and so there's going to be a lot of parallels about how the characters and what they reflect is handled.

The difference in tone between Emergence and the other two singles is so jarring when you listen to them back to back. On one second you're ascending to the 9th realm with Miss Gabi Rose's sax solo, on the other you're clutching your chest on the floor like a wounded animal of prey. Fun stuff.

The Smiling Dead Go On A Road Trip
(Mud, Mel, and Breadhead are all gathered around the car)
Mud: (Lighting up a cigarette) Alright, everybody in the car.
Breadhead: Can I be in the front?
Mud: Sure, whatever.
Mel: So, how far away is Six Flags?
Mud: We’re not going to Six Flags, we’re going on a hit. (Pulls out a photo of the target) Orders from Ken.
Mel: Oh… That’s strange, I- I could’ve sworn we were going to Six Flags considering I’m already in the car AND WE’RE GOING TO SIX FLAGS!!
(Mud turns around just in time to see Mel driving the car at top speed with Breadhead whooping all the while and barely manages to grab on to the bumper at the last second)
*At Six Flags*
Mel: Alright, we made it! Now let’s find our guy.
Breadhead: (Contemplatively) If I were a target, where would I hide?
Mel: Only one way to find out!
(Mel and Breadhead proceed to ride a rollercoaster)
Mel: *Laughing* Oh my god, Mud, you gotta see this picture! Breadhead gets so scared that he makes a face that looks exactly like Mitt Romney’s dog!
Mud: (Aggravated) You know what, I don’t care about your stupid pic- (Gets a good look at the picture) What the- that’s our guy. That’s our guy right there!
Mel: I knew it!
Mud: Mel, block off all the exits, now.
Mel: You got it… just uh… just give me a second here. I’ll be right back.
(Mel and Breadhead proceed to ride a rollercoaster… again)
Breadhead: He wasn’t on Kingda Ka.
Mud: (Pissed off) Yeah, of course he wasn’t! You idiot!
The Target: How are we supposed to- wait…
Breadhead: How are we supposed to know?
Mud: (Notices the target standing off to the side) Wait, that’s him! Get him kids! Get him!
Mel: (Net in hand) I’VE GOT THE NET!!
(Mel leaps at the target, net held over her head… only to fall flat on her face)
Mud: Damn it!
Breadhead: (Locks in) TAAAKE THIS!!
(Breadhead starts charging at the target… only to promptly explode before even reaching him)
Mud: (Completely aghast) Oh my god…
The Target: Finally… I can return… to Kingda Ka!
(The target proceeds to ride a rollercoaster)
