I just need to tell you how much I love the new M9 art but especially Jester’s cool as hell dress! Were you inspired by anything particular when you were working on it? It’s so frothy and great.

Laura included a picture of a beach in the initial brief. Like it was just a pic of a tropical beach, and there were lots of pastel colors, frothy waves. And that was about it. I started with just getting the body down, and aging up her face in a way that felt like it still had Jester's joy and playfulness.

Like I really focused on the face, actually. I think Jester was the one I was the most worried about- Jester is so iconic and.... the character isn't fragile, but the archetype is? Like if you fuck it up and make her look too seductive or too innocent or too... idk. She's complex, and I didn't want to break her, because I was sure that if she was wrong, it would make everyone else feel wrong along with her. So I focused on the face.

So then as soon as Laura had that starting point, she suddenly knew exactly where to go with it. She liked a top, but asked for a dress. Then she added ruffles for days. Then she added jewelry for days. Added the hat, etc. Like that is allll Laura. Laura is very, very good at her job. We all knew that, right?

omg another fun thing about Jester- I asked Producer Kyle if Sprinkle was still alive, and if I should draw him. And we both agreed, almost simultaneously, that Sprinkle is not dead until those words come out of the mouth of Laura Bailey and no other.

First impression

I was immediately intrigued by her psychic abilities, especially considering that there hasn’t been a character like her before in the CR universe. There have been psychic powers before, but a character who actively has her mind reading active means that she is the first psychic character within the lore and I at first assumed that she was the Exandrian version of a Kalashtar.

Oh she is so much more than the Exandrian version of a Kalashtar. She is my blorbo. My silly gal. My skrunkly that I’ve hit with my autism beam! I am always so excited whenever she gets new powers and abilities and I am hyped to see her Form of Havoc in action!

Favorite moment(s)

How do I decide? There’s her dream sequences, when she lightning bolted Laudna’s tree prison, her 33 deception roll! But there’s also her goofier moments. Like that time she fell down a flight of stairs or that moment in the lift down to mines way back in the early episodes. But honestly my favourite moments are her sweet and simple interactions with the other Hells. They range from genuine moments of venerability to chaotic shenanigans that make me laugh every time I think about them. It’s just so hard to pick with Imogen.

Unpopular opinion (I don’t know if this is unpopular, but I’ve seen some meh takes on her so this might as well be unpopular)

Imogen is probably one of the best characters Laura Bailey has made story wise. Everyone talks about how Jester is Laura’s best, and I do agree she seems very comfortable in that character and that’s always important, but story wise Imogen is so intriguing. Her connection to the moon and her powers that keep growing leads to an uncertain story for her and that makes her so good! She has grown so much from that shy horse girl that struggled to be in crowds, and now she’s off saving the world despite what everyone says. She could have easily turned evil, but she hasn’t, and that is absolutely amazing to me!

Favourite relationship

Imogen and Ashton don’t get nearly enough screen time together and that is frankly a crime. Their dynamic is so good, with them both getting on each other’s nerves while also being there to reassure the other or snap some sense back into them. I also feel like there’s the unspoken connection of both of them having powers that they don’t fully understand. Imogen’s ever growing powers that could burst at the seams at any moment and Ashton’s dunimancy that he didn’t even have a name for until recently. They are probably also the youngest in the group in terms of years. They’re just two Marqet kids that now have to save the world even though they don’t properly understand themselves.

Favorite headcanon

That Imogen’s marks are sensitive to the touch. Often they normally tingle under someone’s touch, but someone’s touch actually burns after she has a nightmare and they sting profusely if she breaks the skin around or on them. The only person whose touch doesn’t do this is Laudna’s because of how cold her skin is and after a nightmare it’s a huge relief to Imogen. I also headcanon that she has a mark along her spine. (Same thing above applies here). I might do a fic fully exploring this headcanon at some point.

Ok. Now, for that already know what knows what happens in Part 2, Abby kills Joel in a very horrific manner. Not rehashing it, nor do I really want to turn this into another Abby bashing post. Not my favorite character, but I don't outright hate her, and won't tolerate that shit right now. Time and places, people.

I am concerned because of the absolute hate STILL felt for the character, that it will seep over to the actor in full force, much like it did for LB. Many can't seem to be able to separate the actor and character from each other. They still body shame Abby to no end. I've already seen a bunch of comments where they began body shamming the live action actor before she was even cast.

The misogynistic idiots can be ignored to a degree. But what really worries me are the Pedro fans, similar to the Joel fans, are gonna be so pissed when they see Abby kill Joel. And they didn't know it was coming. Some people can remain oblivious, somehow, in this day and age. How feral are they gonna be? How reactionary are they gonna be? Are they gonna be able to separate the actor from the character? And, more importantly, are the rest of us Pedro fans gonna be mature enough to help guide them to a safe place to get their emotions out where it won't be a complete nightmare for KD AND Pedro?!

Because, c'mon, you can't tell me, that when Pedro sees any fan of his hurt anyone that it doesn't hurt him? The big smush pillow that he is? I see so many people passing around videos and memes about how they're not responsible for your reactions to their actions. That may be so, but you do need to be held accountable if those actions are causing harm. A point that is sorely missed those. The Pedro Fandom is overall protective of our Pedro.

So, I want to kindly ask the Fandom, with love, that when we see this shit happening, and especially when it happens when the show airs, (picture lots of mom/grandma finger pointing here, because that's me), to be nice, be mature, ask them to remember what our Squish Pillow would do (even if he is more chiseled and less squishy right now 😉)? Are we adding to his anxiety? We don't need to do that. The man has more than enough for all of us and don't need no more. Besides, I don't know Kaitlyn Dever. I've never heard of her. I look forward to learning more about her, and seeing what she brings to Abby. Do she and Craig make me see what Neil wanted me to all along? Or is it the same old? But I know this. I won't hate her. She's a human being. Very few things on this planet could make me hate her, and her playing Abby is not one of them.

I was scrolling through some older shippy posts and I saw one that said something along the lines of “oh vex and keyleth definitely fuck when percys not around.” And I’m thinking vex wouldn’t cheat on percy with anyone let alone keyleth. also really don’t like when people say “oh when one day percy dies vex and keyleth would get together” that’s one is more recent I saw. And I know people want keyleth to move on, but why would she move one with her dead boyfriend’s twin sister, that seems really weird to me. Like, wouldn’t that just keep the grief alive? Would good would that do for either of them? And when percy does pass, I don’t think vex would just be like “hey keyleth my husband died wanna get together?” Anyway what’s your thoughts on this?

Honestly, the fanon for Vex/Keyleth suffers from a similar cadre of self insert fanfic issues as the fanon for Vax/Keyleth—a lot of people have projected themselves onto Keyleth, who gets watered down to an uber-powerful goddess-like figure whose only flaw is that she doesn't believe in herself and she can be both supported and ✨shown the ways of love✨ by a hot broody love interest who's so perfect and good and always there to gush over how great she is no matter what. Keyleth's anger and self-righteousness, Vax's possessiveness and recklessness (and genuine love for Gilmore), and/or Vex's attraction to darkness and clashing style of leadership are all completely ignored.

At the end of the day, every one of those types of posts is basically saying "well once Laura Bailey Character's beloved husband has died of old age and she's a free agent after ~70 years of marriage and bearing at least five of his children, then she can FINALLY be with Marisha Ray Character. What was her name? Kayleigh? Idk but Laura PC and Marisha PC should definitely fuck tho". And like, you must REALLY not like either Vex or Keyleth if you'd inflict them on each other for reasons indiscernible to people who pay attention to this show for longer than it takes to cherry-pick supercut clips. They would make each other miserable, for reasons you cited and others.

Also, in terms of getting with Keyleth when the human spouse dies: Kima's right there!

this is a rambly vent post but alas. tlovm vex makes me sad and i really wish she didn’t but. i miss the vex who made her issues very clear to those around her by treating them like a joke or witty remark. like when vax talks to her about percy giving her a title, saying he’s always thought she was The Coolest and that it’s like framing a sunset and doesn’t mean anything that wasn’t true before. and vax reminds her that she’s always been stronger than him and that He Needs Her To Keep Doing That and vex in her trademark wry undercutting warmth, sarcastically (except not at all) remarks that It’s All An Act, Dear. i miss the vex who undercut the Precise Mask of her constructed personality with shitty and dorky humour and awkwardness.

like, i definitely get having to make everything more condensed but the way a lot of the codependency with vax and vex has emphasized Vax Needs Her and She Needs Him but not as much. Vex (thinks she) Has To Be The Version Of Herself That Vax Needs. and to that extent, a lot of the Laura Bailey PC™ masking that comes with vex’s choices around her role in vox machina hasn’t been able to be made apparent and that’s just kinda. :/ to me. like they have the bitchiness but tlovm makes that part of her seem more like a Consequence of her life than a Choice she makes in terms of behaviour given what she believes to be true about the world.

a lot of the role that vox machina plays in vex’s thought process around herself and her worth ended up being extracted for the space/time and it makes sense but it also just makes her a much less compelling character to me which sucks major balls. like, and i once again emphasize that i understand that tlovm is extremely short form version of a very long story because the cr fandom is the cr fandom where Any dislike is treated as a punishable offence, So Much of vex’s relation to the family she Chose and from the world beyond her father was extracted from the narrative of her self doubt and that makes me so sad. because yes her father is a shit, yes percy’s affirmation was perspective altering for her, yes vax’s simultaneous closeness and distance to her complicates their different reactions to their father, but . keyleth made fun of saundor and vex laughed after spending the entire fight with him uncertain if she’d made the right choice. at the same time that scanlan was burying his fears beneath his skin until they’ll one day erupt, the creepy tree fey called vex an unproven ally, said she was shattered by expectation, told her she presented an illusion of confidence - vex, who will say what she’s learned from scanlan is that they all talk too much. in tlovm, vex is isolated in a very literal way, tossed into her past with her father rather than reminded of her current inadequacy for her friends. she isn’t an unproven ally, she is only an unwanted daughter. she Carried saundor along with fenthras for a while after the echo tree, unsure if she’d made the right choice, Because It Was About Helping Her Family, not about just proving herself to her father, or even herself.

and, this isn’t a dunk on scanlan to be clear, but if they have the space and time to make scanlan’s Doubt more explicit, then they could’ve had the space and time to maintain more of the complexity of vex’s character and they chose not to. which! i respect, i am very glad for cr and the writers and i have no doubt they are making the thing they want to make, it just also happens that the choices they make do not always spark joy and praise in my watching of it.

I'm a bit late, usually am to be honest. But here's Prompt One for Spooktober: "They are calling us…" "Don't listen to them. Do you hear me? Don't listen to a word they promise you!" Didn't like it and prolly won't finish it.

Alice and I moved to her hometown about two weeks ago. I was a college student and Alice was an artist. This meant saying money was tight was an understatement, even with us both working, we just couldn't afford the rent in a bigger city. So Alice's mother suggested we move into her childhood home, since she'd moved into assisted living. Alice was hesitant, but when our landlord increased the rent again, she changed her mind.

The move itself was painless, the beat up van was plenty large enough to pack up her art supplies and my own meager belongings. The house was already furnished, so we left our shitty mattress and wobbly table with its single chair behind. On the way out the door, the stray cat I'd been calling Gregory for a year came sauntering up. He was a fluffy orange beast of a furball and he looked as shocked as I did when Alice, with an angry sort of determination, scooped him up and tossed him in the van without so much as a "here kitty kitty". Luckily Gregory, with his smooshed little face, wasn't offended for long and soon curled up in my lap to sleep as the van rumbled along, sounding just as angry as Alice looked. I asked what was on her mind, but Alice simply pinched her lips together, dark eyes narrowed at the road. I knew better than to push her while she was like that and once we got to her hometown, it never came up again.

Gregory and I settled into the house nicely, it wasn't big or fancy but was it was cozy, all warm colors and family photos in a three bedroom setting. Alice, after her initial anger on the drive up, seemed her usual restless self. That was always her way, it had driven me mad at first, but over time I'd grown to cherish that about her. Her soft pacing footsteps in the kitchen at 3am while she scrolled through reference photos, followed inevitably by me finding her curled up somewhere random in the afternoon. I would usually join her for a nap then and she often teased me, saying; "You're the only woman I know who sleeps so much" I never had the heart to tell her that she actually didn't sleep enough, those two hour naps weren't nearly enough.

Things didn't get weird until about three days ago, I stopped by the nursing home Alice said her mom was in and asked to see her. The nurse frowned, a funny pinched look on her face, like she smelled something bad. "Are you sure you wanna see Ms. Bailey?" she asked in that voice that said she figured I probably didn't. I smiled back, years of customer service had taught me how to deal with this sort of judgmental attitude. "Yes, I do ma'am. I'm Nina, Alice Bailey's girlfriend. I thought I'd stop by and say hello to Laura. What room number is she in?" I thought the nurse might look put out or annoyed with my insistence, but instead she just looked tired and a bit sad. She pointed me to room 43 and I was on my way. When I glanced back over my shoulder, feeling as though I was being watched, the nurse was already gone. I found my stomach twisting a bit with sudden nerves but I figured it was lunch time and pushed the feeling away. I knocked on Laura's door, frowning at how damaged her door seemed to be, something had burnt the wood of the door at some point and then painted rather sloppily over the charring. I soon found myself forgetting about my disgruntlement at the state of the nursing home, as Laura invited me in and we began to chat.

We had such a good time that I lost track of time. It was a good hour past sunset when I realized I was meant to be home hours ago. Laughing at my carelessness, I apologized to Alice's mother and stood to leave. She caught my wrist and tugged me closer with a strength that seemed a bit out of place on a frail old woman. Her hand was cold and leathery in a way that made me want to jerk away. She looked up at me from her big comfy pile of blankets in her arm chair, her eyes were dark like Alice's. She stared into my face and for a moment her expression twisted, looking like she desperately wanted to say something. Laura didn't say anything though, not for a long moment where it felt like I was frozen down to my bones. Eventually she heaved a sigh and looked away from me and all was normal again. "They're calling us, you know." She mumbled, releasing my arm. I wanted to ask more but my phone rang, Alice was calling.

It’s a sunny day in Galveen. Imogen and her father are on their way back to stables, they pass by a group of townsfolk surrounding this young ‘witchy’ looking woman in the centre of the market round. They’re harassing her, yelling nonsense toward her. “YOU’RE NOT WELCOME HERE WITCH!” One of them yells at her. And for just a split second Imogen sees herself in her place. It’s only gonna be a matter of time before I lose control, and they’ll turn on me. “Imogen!” Her father snaps her out of it. She turns to him, and without saying a word she follows.

Arrived at the stables, she wasn’t able to let it go. That women on her mind the whole way back. Her father brings the horse feed to the storage shack, while Imogen quickly starts tacking up Flora. And she heads off, back into town.

There she finds the same sight she had passed earlier, only now the townsfolk are coming at her with pitchforks and torches. Getting a better look at the woman this time around. Her skin is pale and almost doll-like. She has long, thin, dark hair with a shock of white through her bangs, pulled up in a half-up bun with a rock chisel. She wears tattered clothes, including a dark red blouse and a black skirt, with various tools hanging from her belt. “HEY! LEAVE HER ALONE!” Imogen yells from the top of her lungs as she gallops their way. All of their heads turn as Imogen stops right in between the folk and the girl who had been pushed back onto the ground. “And who are you to stop us?!” A man shouts from the crowd. A moment of murmurs passes before an older woman replies. “Your Temult’s daughter, right?!” She pauses, giving Imogen a harsh glare. “Figures we’d see you here, Temult. Two witches working together!” She adds, stepping up right to the horse. Without any hesitation, Imogen reaches out her hand releasing a bright bolt of crackling purple energy right in the middle of the crowd. The blast pushing outward, and any folk in the way along with it. This gives Imogen just enough time to turn to the woman, who has now gotten back on her feet. “Get on, quickly! Where do you live?” Imogen asks frantically, holding out her hand for help. Confused and with the lightest hint of distrust, she takes Imogen’s hand and climbs up sitting behind Imogen. “Uhhh.. in the woods. That way.” She points toward to woods on the east side of town. And so Imogen steers Flora in that direction, the same one she came from.

Seeing one of the towns folk running in their direction with a flaming torch ready to throw it, the woman in the back looks over in this guy's direction. Giving him a big smile, as this black liquid starts running from her eyes and nostrils. “Waaaghh!” She exclaims in a sort of whispered scream reaching her clawed hands towards this guy, who instantly stiffens up in fear and runs the other way. On their way across the market round, the older woman from earlier is making her way to block their path. Imogen immediately reaches out her mind, her face showing determination. “Why don’t you just leave us alone?!” She whispers towards her. The woman stops dead in her tracks and scurries away from the ladies as far as she can, her hands covering her ears in pain. Spotting a cluster of folk by the passage they must go through, the woman reaches out her hands and whispers a quiet incantation, as a burst of black smokey energy erupts from her hand. Hitting the side of the building to their left, some of the brick breaks off and the cluster spreads out in shock of the sudden blast right next to them. Imogen leads Flora through the passage and straight into the woods, not slowing down just yet.

A couple miles into the woods, Flora slows down at a slight pull on the reins from Imogen as they approach a small cabin. The stranger she had just rescued gets off of the horse’s back before Imogen gets off herself. Taking the reins and leading Flora toward the cabin. “This is so nice. It’s so quiet and peaceful here.” Imogen takes in the silence inside her head at the moment, able to relax for what feels like the first time ever. “It’s pretty great.” The woman states, walking over to the front door and opening it. Waiting for Imogen to follow her inside. “Uhhm.. Do you want a cup of tea? Or.. well.. I only have tea actually.. I’m sorry.. Also thank you, for helping back there. You really didn’t have to.” “Oh yeah.. well I wasn’t gonna just leave you be.. The townsfolk can be very.. opinionated..” The woman fills two stone mugs with hot tea from her kettle hanging over the hearth. “Here you go.” She hands Imogen a mug and sits down on the chair beside her. “Uhh..” The woman turns to face Imogen. “Hi, my name is Laudna.” She reaches out her hand, introducing herself. A bit taken aback by the sudden introduction, Imogen takes Laudna’s hand. “Imogen, it’s nice to meet you.” I big smile forms on Laudna’s face, receiving a shy one from Imogen in return.

I still cannot believe that BAFTA award winner Laura Bailey

sat down when they were creating their characters and said, Imogen is going to be in love with Laudna from the GET GO and just... played that long game for two years without telling ANYONE. LIKE. Ma'am, what even is your mind. When Marisha was like "I'm creating an unromanceable dead person," Laura sat there nodding all supportive like and was secretly just plotting this. All along. It's just so! Insane!

What is their birthday or date of birth OR how old do you see them as in the games you play them in?

Audrey Langston my beloved. in my head, she starts out 19-20 in SR, then 25 in SR2, 27-28 in SRTT, 29 in the prologue to SRIV, then 34-35 in the rest of IV. her birthday is April 7, but that, along with most personal information about her, she keeps solidly to herself. (and to Johnny, Pierce and Shaundi, the people who have been with her the longest time.)

Which is their voice?

I’m a Critical Role fan, so I obviously immediately went for Laura Bailey voice. in-universe it’s somewhat raspier.

Who is their second-in-command or are all their lieutenants equal?

Johnny was her initial second-in-command, but after his apparent death she split the role between Shaundi and Pierce. I imagine the moment Shaundi was kidnapped in SRTT, Audrey’s response was to say “fuck it” to revenge and to being Feared—at heart, she cares deeply for the Saints, who she sees as Hers, and she especially could not bear to lose Shaundi after losing Johnny. getting even more fame and fortune actually barely even registered in her brain, although she did bask in it and the power very happily.

with Johnny’s return, she’s pretty much made him her second again, but now he and Shaundi and Pierce kind of make up an advisory council to her. it actually kinda played into Keith’s betrayal—he found it galling that Audrey made him VP but listened more to Shaundi and Pierce than to him, and that just built up over years and years until he broke.
