Hi! Do you have any recommendations for people who are trying to get into Roman history? (Specifically the Roman Republic)
I’ve started with Rubicon by Tom Holland, but I’m curious if you have any other book recommendations or books you love about this time period?
tbh I care more about the creative-social history/legacy/reception involving the Roman Republic than the actual study of Roman history as a whole, so when I think of entry ways for getting into the Late Republic, it's more like: Shakespeare's Julius Caesar or HBO Rome (AND OFC, MY BELOVED STARZ SPARTACUS) followed by Manfredi Piccolomini's The Brutus Revival or M.L. Clarke's The Noblest Roman (getting interested in Spartacus will take you everywhere you need to go with the Republic also)
alternatively, picking a roman politician and getting really weird about them will also take you all over the place, since roman politicians don't die normally.
otherwise, what I usually recommend when people ask me about learning more about the Republic is The Last Generation of the Roman Republic-- wicked title, good read, solid book.
#tom holland's rubicon is a pretty fun read tho i'd stick with it if you're enjoying it#honestly the french cleopatra musical did more for sparking an interest in early imperial roman research than any particular#book on the subject. i read biographies on mark antony to better formulate thoughts on the antony-octavian dynamic at play#in that musical and i do not. as a general rule. care enough about mark antony to fully read one of his biographies#altho that's also because no one who writes about him really has anything new to say? it's not as interesting. BUT. for that musical#i was like. oh ho. my curiosity. consider it piqued. obviously the only thing to do is compare all antony-octavian-octavia dynamics#in every media that portrays them and see what thoughts shake loose

I wasn't gonna make an Indigo Park oc but then I started thinking about the theme park I went to as a kid and I got the idea of a beaver running a ride based on water flumes like Logger's Run or Splash Mountain :3
They're also based on wildlife education characters like Smokey the Bear and Ranger Rick!

So when grimm was born she was stolen n sold. Cause her parents pissed off agate at some point :/
Where she was sold to is a research facility that worked on cures for various diseases.
Yknow the episode of doctor who with the cat nurses? This one :
It's like that.
When she was 5 agate decided to rob the place she was at n took all the patients so they'd have to buy em back. She didn't know who grimm was. But she did decide to keep her so that's where grimms been since :3c
She n felicity got married when she was 12 cause ppl kept asking agate if they could n she got really annoyed so made grimm pick someone on the ship :/
When she was 16 is when ferris unwillingly joined the ship, she blinded him in one eye in the process but they quickly became friends after :)
Then at 20 she died. Then got kidnapped by cosmo n lauren. Then agate got her back n made cosmo n lauren also unwillingly join the ship! As one does :)
Now she is 23 (20(3)) and she is the worst girl in the universe!
She also is still sick and gets sick pretty often cause the whole labrat thing. And since cosmo n lauren are doctors that specifically work on sirens it's why agate decided they weren't leaving. Grimm makes their lives hell tho cause she is Terrified of hospitals/doctors/needles ect ect
Uhh let's see. She has 6 siblings 1 is human the others are all agates kids. The 5 that are agates all hate agate n want her dead. The 1 human is another kid agate stole at some point, he's currently on earth! He is 35 (not really important for bitten off but is for Sloan n Beatrices story)

oh my god I was thinking about a jayvik fallout new vegas AU and was like "hm maybe Viktor uploads himself into one of those robots until he can get a different body by like repurposing power armor or something idk" and then I remembered that this guy's name actually is Victor
#idk what to do with Jayce tbh its been a while since ive played this game#just thought this was a funny coincidence adjfkg#you know the brainworms have gotten real bad when im coming up with a bunch of weird ass AUs#ok i know i just said i wanna shut up about fandom things but this was in my drafts and i think it's a little funny#honestly idk if that would even work i don't know if they have the technology to transfer an entire personality to a robot?#i think they just have their own weird AIs going on and if Viktor wanted to extend his life he'd have to do the other thing#and augment himself with power armor. like that seems more in line with what would actually work within the lore#though it has been a while so there's a lot of fa/lout lore i don't remember idk#maybe he has like an emergency ai based on his personality in there but its distinctly not him and it's a creepy how uncanny it is#OR the robot is blitzcrank which would make the most sense actually idk why that wasn't my first thought#anyways i have a few ideas on what a questline with him and Jayce could look like maybe?#like Viktor is chilling with the followers of the apocalypse or whatever those were called#Jayce is maybe a field medic with the NCR? and when they go on their regular vacations to the strip he gets drunk and in a fight#somehow he ends up in freeside at the fort where the followers are and Viktor patches him up. That's how they meet#and then they bond over medical research science stuff. Now Jayce just dips out on his ncr buddies whenever they go to the strip#he just goes to freeside to hang out with Viktor. He probably also steals supplies from the ncr bc the followers have so few resources#he brings all that stuff to Viktor and they make new medicines and build cool shit that helps freeside etc#but then Viktor is dying of radiation sickness. ensue fetchquests to gather power armor parts and supplies#so he can build a new body and avoid dying yippie. maybe his backup ai and building blitzcrank from that can be like a sidequest#different sidequest would probably be Jayce getting in trouble with the ncr. and having to deal with that#idk I'm just throwing ideas at a wall and seeing what sticks. I'm having fun with it tho#maybe if my brain doesn't hate me I'll make some art for this. it's a neat little concept#this is NOT going into the tags lol. i am embarrassed about everything i say as per usual forever and always amen 🙏

a while ago i tried doing the math for how andre/mine could possibly live (beforelad8cameout) using relistic settings and , well obviously neither of them could from the estimated height and force, but the only way i could get a ??? a possible ??? survivor is from if one of them landed the absolute perfect way over the other, breaking the majority of the bones + coma for a while.
