Money Heist: Korea: Joint Economic Area. 종이의 집: 공동경제구역. 7.7/10
I wouldn't recommend this drama to my friends. I wouldn't rewatch this drama.
The way Moo Hyuk smokes is so unattractive. Jo Young Min is giving me Train to Busan's Yon Suk. I don't love Rio.
The way the uniforms look is so cool when we get into various formations, especially outside. Wow the mask change was genius. Miseon, you're too lovely to be with these men. Tokyo is so cool, especially with that machine gun. I also love how easily she utilizes her gun with such confidence. Bro, Seoul is so cool too and like great addition of another baller woman. I love how elaborate all this planning is. It was pretty crazy by the end. We write these kind of schemes for a tv show but I wonder what kinda planning is going on in the real world.
Bro, Misun's gunshot wound is gnarly.
Can you believe Denver and Miseon are having sex in this situation and without really being clean and also being so wounded?
This poor generational Stockholm Syndrome situation. I cried at Moscow's death.

Seoul is pretty cute, ngl
We had a few free days between traveling to Jeju and Busan (tomorrow) and we decided to spend the time exploring Seoul on our own! We first went to Insadong which is this huge shopping street with popup shops, artist stores, and little souvenir shops. It is also home to cute little photo spots like seen in the second photo above.
I ended up paying too much money here, but when in Seoul, you need to buy I suppose.
I should mention that this was the hottest day of pur trip so far. I think the temperature was 96F and felt like 106F. Walking around was not fun, and I do not recommend it. This trip can be summarized as, we are fighting for our lives.
We next went to Lotte Tower which is this huge department store with 10+ floors! It is divided into two towers where one floor holds its amusement park and the other holds all the stores. We specifically wanted to go to the Ghibli store, but it took a while to get there.
I also spent too much money at the Ghibli store, but you have to do what you have to do. Lotte World is huge, and we managed to find an aquarium there as well. With some time to kill, we ended up wandering around.
It's a really good aquarium! As someone who just went to the Baltimore aquarium a few weeks ago, it's really good! You wouldn't think it since it's inside a mall, but it's huge and has lots of exhibits and 2 water tunnels!!! It just kept going and going, and man, was it worth the measly $25! So cheap! Highly recommend going if you're in the area.
Food here is so great. I love it here. This is a heaven. We've been in so many good restaurants, and I've loved every bite. I cannot wait for my next meal because I know it's going to be good.
Food is so cheap here. Rose explained to me that the restaurants here have very small menus, but they do those few things really well. So the overhead of the expensive items is really small, so meals are cheap. An entire bowl of noodles is usually only $9! It's kind of crazy, but man, I could waste so much money here on food.
We're heading to Busan tomorrow at 7:30 sharp. It's a 4 hour car ride, so god bless us as we try to make it through the literal typhoon that's going to go through the country. Here's hoping.

Kidding, this goes out to everyone that sees this. It’s all love here, I had a tough week myself screwing myself over with university applications. I also look too intimidating irl for anyone to be touchy with me except for my dog but best believe I’ll hand out hugs if I’m asked to, or may get touchy with others when I’m drunk.
Hannie, any book recs? Any genre would do, I’d like to see what you enjoy reading. Movie/show recs would do too :D (open to all anons too)
I’d love to insert a picture of my goldfish here but I’d have to reveal myself as I can’t post it while on anon. Maybe I’d do it one day when I have the confidence to. I also just applied to the top university in my country in hopes to get into the supposedly strong sociology department, crossing my fingers I get in considering I topped my school 🐸 . I’m also trying to pick up a new language, and have some volunteering at soup kitchens planned, excited to volunteer w my friends.

Matt Maltese- Everyone Adores You ( at least I do)
Sir Chloe- Walk You Home

reunion ☀
pairing : lee donghyuck x reader
genre : fluff, a little angst in the beginning perhaps? college!au, nonidol!au, kinda soulmate!au?
word count : 4.2k
warnings : a few swearwords and mentions of sex, alcohol & fights but it’s mostly just fluff !!
You always believed that you and Donghyuck weren’t just best friends. You were soulmates. You two had a deeper connection than you’ve ever had with anyone else. You didn’t even feel this way about your own parents.
You two met in first grade, in the sandpit in the playground at school. You had been crying because a classmate of yours had just kicked down your sandcastle, when Donghyuck suddenly appeared. You looked up at him standing next to you with tears in your eyes, and he patted your head. For some reason, this is what his elderly cousin used to do to him when he was sad, so he had it in his system to just pat someone’s head when they were sad. You didn’t know why, but it did actually cheer you up. This came to be the start of the wonderful relationship between you two. Because after this day, you two always sat together at lunch, and you always paired up with each other in class whenever you had the chance. You became almost inseparable.
A couple of years later, at your classmate Jaemin’s birthday party in 6th grade, the two of you shared your first kiss. It was during a round of truth or dare, in which Donghyuck was dared to kiss the cutest girl in the room. It was nothing more than an awkward peck and it lasted for less than a second, but it was clearly enough for all the 11-12-year-olds to break out in giggles (and your and Donghyuck’s faces to instantly redden). Afterwards, he told you that he only picked you because the other girls were, in his own words, yucky. You tried your best not to be offended by how your best friend had just said that he didn’t find you cute - but at the same time, neither you nor he really understood the depth of his actions back then.
But the next time he kissed you, you did understand. It was during one of your sleepovers at his house, a few days before your graduation from your junior year in high school, that he suddenly had looked into your eyes with his soft ones and asked if he could kiss you. And you had been so stunned that you couldn’t even use your words, but you nodded and smiled at him. He smiled back at you before leaning in slowly to meet your lips with his. It was definitely less awkward than the one at Jaemin’s party - and it meant a lot more. During all these years, you had been beginning feeling so much for this boy and you weren’t sure until now exactly what all those feelings meant. You thought you only liked him as a friend, but oh how wrong you had been.
You loved him. Deeply. And you had for long before that kiss. Therefore, it was never weird for you two to tell the other that you loved them. And maybe that was why it felt like you had dated for an eternity when you had only been going out for a couple of months.
You two barely ever fought, and when you did, you often made up the same day. You two understood each other and the other’s feelings so well that you almost never needed to go further than a small argument. Everything always got solved, no matter how big the problem was. That’s why most of your friends were confused when you broke up.
It was in your senior year of high school. You had both applied for a college in Incheon and had talked a lot about attending it together. So it was hard for you to understand when Donghyuck suddenly said that he had been accepted into a school in Busan, and was planning to attend it. It came to you as a shock, but you were willing to see past it and try to focus on having a long-distance relationship. But that apparently wasn’t what he wanted.
Tears were forming in your (as well as Donghyuck’s) eyes as he told you that he wanted to set you free, that he didn’t want you to wait for him. He thought that it would be too hard for you both to have such distance between you; he didn’t think he’d be able to handle it, and he didn’t want you not to stay waiting for him, keeping yourself from meeting someone new who could bring you happiness.
It had left you heartbroken, it really had. Your friends asked about your breakup and wondered why you couldn’t keep dating, because they thought that if anyone were to pull off long-distance, it would be you two.
But you actually thought Donghyuck had a point, even though it hurt. Heck, it stung like crazy! You agreed on the fact that it would be hard to stay away from each other, and it would be hard having to go to bed every night longing for each other. But it upset you. You were so upset that you didn’t even know what to do. You had never felt like this before. You weren’t just losing your boyfriend; you were losing your best friend. Your soulmate.
You two didn’t talk at all from the day of your breakup to your graduation day. Donghyuck saw how broken you were, but he felt like he couldn’t fix it. But on your graduation day, as everyone in your class was saying their farewells, Donghyuck pulled you aside. He hugged you so tightly, and you relaxed into his arms, thinking about how this would be the last time you’d hug him in a long while.
Resting his head against yours, he softly whispered to you. “I love you, and I always will.”
“I love you too, Hyuck.”
“You know that saying, right?” He asked as he pulled away to look right into your eyes, while still holding you in his arms. “If you love something, let it go. If it comes back to you, it was meant to be.”
“Then I hope I’ll see you again.” You had both smiled at each other before parting ways.
Now, you didn’t attend that school in Incheon you both had talked about. You had also gotten accepted to a school in Seoul, which your parents had recommended for you, so that’s where you went. It had turned out to be a really good choice; the teachers were amazing and you had made a lot of new friends. You also fancied the campus life which you were now experiencing, and you liked living in the dorms. You had a wonderfully sweet roommate, Yewon, who you quickly became very good friends with. She was a year older than you were, so she “taught” you everything you needed to know about parties, frat houses, etc.
Everything went on smoothly. Sure, half of your freshman year you were still sulking about Donghyuck, but after that, you were able to relax. You had a couple of make-out-sessions through your freshman and sophomore years, and even a few hookups, but you never had a real boyfriend, as none of the boys on campus really fit your style - but now, looking back, it might have been because your standards were set too high after Donghyuck. You were unconsciously looking for the same kind of connection to someone as the one you’d felt with him. And that was hard.
You had pretty much forgotten about him when your junior year began. You hadn’t seen him for over a year, and sure, he had broken your heart - but you weren’t as sad about it anymore. You could think about him and even discuss him with your friends without crying. You were over him.
Or, well, at least that’s what you thought.
Until you one day, at the beginning of your junior year, when you were walking back towards your dorm after having a talk with one of your teachers in another school building. That’s when you saw someone walking a couple of meters ahead of you, towards the front office. A boy with dark, brown hair and golden skin, and you knew it could only mean one thing.
“Hyuck?” You said under your breath. “Hyuck!” Your mouth was yelling his name across campus before you could even control your impulses, and you regretted it as soon as the name had left your mouth.
But when he looked over towards you, and you saw how his eyes lit up when he recognized you, you suddenly didn’t regret it anymore.
You both hurried to get closer, and before you could even realize what was happening, you both had thrown yourselves at each other in a big hug.
It was as if nothing had changed. It was as if you two were still back in high school and no time had passed. You were just as happy to be in his arms as you’d been back in the days.
“Oh my god, what are you doing here?!” you exclaimed as you pulled away from the hug.
“I should be asking you the same question,” he said back, a grin appearing on his face.
“Well, I decided to go here instead of Incheon. It felt...” You stopped to search for words. “Better in some way, you know?” He nodded. “Now it’s your turn! Why are you here?”
“I guess you could say I... got kicked out...” He looked down as his voice grew smaller.
“You- what? Really?”
He looked up at you again and shrugged, placing his hands in the front pockets of his jeans. “I don’t regret it though.”
“How- What-“ You were so in shock that you could barely even speak. The Donghyuck you knew wouldn’t hurt even the smallest insect, he was always such a sweet boy and would never do anything that could get him kicked out of school. Even back in first grade, he tried his best to take care of you even though you didn’t know each other. Was this even the same person? “How do you get kicked out and then not regret it?”
He took his phone out of his back pocket, checking his time, before looking behind him towards the front office. “I actually am in a bit of a rush, but... Do you want to catch up over a coffee? I heard there’s a great cafe here on campus.”
“Yeah, sure! It’s right there,” you said and pointed over at the cafe building. “See you there in 10?” You nodded and he smiled at you, before turning around and walking away.
You stood still in your spot for a couple of moments, just trying to calm your now rapidly beating heart. You closed your eyes and took a deep breath, trying to pull yourself together.
Did you just meet him again? After all this time? After all that has happened?
But since you were standing there, eyes shut while waiting for your heart to slow down, you couldn’t see how Donghyuck turned around in his tracks and looked back at you, a smile seeking its way upon his lips and a small blush spreading across his cheeks.
Just a couple of moments later, you opened your eyes and quickly walked towards your dorm room, practically throwing yourself through the door. “Why are you so out of breath?” Yewon said from her place on her bed. “Did you run here?”
“No, it’s just... I’m just...” You took a deep breath. “I just met Donghyuck.”
She looked up from the physics book in front of her on the bed. “The Donghyuck?” You nodded. She looked like she didn’t believe her ears.
You had spent hours after hours talking to her about Donghyuck. Mostly about how much you loved, or maybe I should say still love, him. She knew about how much you missed him, and how much it had hurt to leave him. So, of course, she was curious about this new situation.
“What is he doing here?”
“I think he’s transferring here,” you said, taking off your shoes and walking over to sit down on your bed.
“Why?”
“Not sure, he’s gonna tell me when we meet up in about five minutes.” You laid back into your soft sheets, trying to calm your mind a bit.
“You’re seeing him in five minutes? What are you doing, we need to get you dressed up in something cute and-“
You laughed, cutting her off. “No no, there’s no need to change, we’re just getting a coffee. Besides...” You sat up in the bed and threw a glance at yourself through the full-body mirror across the room. “Isn’t this outfit kind of cute?”
“It seems like we have different definitions of the word cute...” she mumbled and you shook your head, leaning back onto your bed again. Yewon stood up and grabbed her coat by the door, taking on her shoes. “So, I think I’ll be spending the night in Renjun’s room tonight... in case you feel like-”
“IT’S JUST A COFFEE!” you groaned at her before she could even finish her sentence, making her laugh. With a grin on your lips, you waved goodbye to her and she exited the room.
You stayed in your room for the next couple of minutes, trying to take your mind off the whole situation so that you wouldn’t get too nervous. But soon, it was time for you to head out of the room again and get going to the cafe.
When you arrived, Donghyuck was already standing by the entrance, leaning on the wall next to the door.
When you met him a couple of minutes ago, you were too shook by the whole situation to take a look at him. But now you could. He was wearing a black bomber jacket over a black hoodie, with a white T-shirt sticking out from under it. And his dark brown hair looked like he hadn’t put a lot of effort into it, but at the same time, it looked perfect. You felt goosebumps growing on your skin and your cheeks beginning to redden by just looking at him. You weren’t aware until now that he still, to this day had this effect on you. And it kind of... scared you? Made you nervous?
But when he looked up from his phone, caught you in his eyes and smiled, you smiled back, and it made you forget about all that you’d been feeling these last few moments.
He put down his phone in his pocket and stood up more properly as you walked closer. “Hi again,” he rejoiced. “Do you go here often?”
“Well, considering the fact that the cafeteria’s coffee tastes like trash and I’m still as big of a procrastinator as I was in high school...” you started. “I guess you could say I’ve had a couple of night-before-big-exam-coffees here.”
He grinned, shaking his head. “You’re crazy.” You stuck out your tongue at him, opening the door and walking inside.
The cafe was emptier than usual. Only a few tables were taken, mostly by lovestruck couples. You assumed it was because the semester hadn’t even started yet - in just a few weeks, it probably would be full to the brim with studying freshmen and tired seniors.
By the counter stood Chenle, one of your friends from your math class. “Hey Y/N!” he cheered and you greeted him back as you and Donghyuck walked over to him. “Who’s this?” He pointed over at the boy standing next to you.
“This is Donghyuck, my...” Then you grew quiet. You weren’t sure how to address him. Your friend? Too weak. Your best friend? Weird, considering how you haven’t spoken in two years. Your ex-boyfriend? Too awkward. Your soulmate? Waaaaay too strong.
“I’ll have a strawberry frappuccino, thank you.” You didn’t like it when people interrupted you - but this time, you were actually glad he said something to cover up this awkward silence.
“And the usual for me, please,” you said and shot him a smile.
“Sure. Anything else?” Chenle asked.
“No, thank you.”
You both paid and got your drinks. You waved goodbye to Chenle and then sat down at a table by the window. You looked over at Donghyuck, who was already drinking from his cup.
You grinned at him. “A strawberry frappuccino. Typical, typical Donghyuck.”
“What? You know I don’t like the caffeine kicks...” He pouted and you stuck out your tongue at him. “How about you? Still only drinking espresso macchiatos?”
You nodded, taking a sip. “But I upgraded from just a single shot of espresso to two.”
“Wow, you’ve really changed!” he said ironically while laughing and you rolled your eyes.
“Now, what’s going on? Are you transferring here?”
He nodded, drinking some more of his drink. “I sure am.”
You weren’t sure if this was good or bad. You two weren’t on awkward terms with each other, it seemed, but how were you two going to act around each other in the future? What would be your relationship? Would you only be friends? You had been so inseparable when you were younger but you weren’t sure if you could just go back to the way things were.
“I can’t believe you got kicked out from the school in Busan, what did you even do?”
“Well, um...” He sighed, his eyes wandering across the room nervously. “You know Lee Mark? The guy one year above us when we went to high school?” You nodded. “Well, he was dating one of my friends, Yeji. Soon, he started cheating on her with multiple girls, and when she found out she instantly broke up with him. Then one day, like a week ago? I went to a party in a dorm room, and I was talking to Yeji when he came up behind her and started hugging her, whispering stuff in her ear. She tried to push him off, but then...” He shut his eyes. “He started touching her. Her butt, her...” He took a deep breath and opened his eyes again, looking at you. “I had to do something. So I hit him straight in his face.”
“You did what now?!” He grimaced. “Are you serious?!”
“Completely.” You had to cover your mouth because it was hanging open due to the shock. “I didn’t know what to do, I had to do something. Maybe this wasn’t the best way to go but... I couldn’t control the impulse.“ Donghyuck wasn’t usually the type to not be able to control his impulses. He usually thought everything through properly before doing anything - but that was the Donghyuck you knew back in the days. Maybe he’d changed now. “Mark hit me back, though if I may say so, it wasn’t very hard.” You scoffed, shaking your head at the fact that he had the audacity to say that at this moment. “So I put my hands on his shoulders and pushed him backward, making him fall into a table with some glasses and vodka bottles. It was like I was seeing red, I was going crazy. So I just walked out of the room, trying to calm down.”
“So then you were kicked out?”
He took another sip of his drink and nodded. “The teachers found out about a fight on campus, and they kicked us both out immediately.”
You chuckled. “Wow. Lee Donghyuck in a fight, huh? If someone had told me in high school that you’d be in a fistfight in college, I wouldn’t believe it.” He smiled. “Neither would I. But shit happens, you know?”
You nodded. “At the same time as it was stupid of you, it was also kind of... good.” He raised his eyebrow, drinking some more. “You did the right thing. You protected a friend, and that’s worth a lot.”
“Thank you for understanding,” he snickered, a grin forming on his lips. You two continued discussing the years apart, talking about how you’ve been and how school’s been. But after a while, the question you’d both been waiting for finally arrived.
“So...” he started. “Have you been seeing someone?”
You went quiet for a couple of moments, pretending like you had to think about it. “Nothing serious, no.” You leaned back in your chair. “A couple of dates here and there, sure. But nothing deeper. You?”
“Same here. I had a girlfriend for like, what? A week?” You sneered. “But then I realized that the relationship was empty. Like, we had nothing in common, nothing to talk about, no reason to stay together.” You nodded, understanding his situation.
Then followed a moment of silence, before he dared to speak up again.
“Have you... you know...” Donghyuck thought the small wiggle of his eyebrows would be explaining enough, but apparently not, since a big confused look was plastered on your face now. He groaned, pulling a hand through his hand. “Have you had sex with anyone?”
“Donghyuck!”
“What? It’s not like we haven’t had sex. It’s not that sensitive of a subject, is it?” he questioned and you pulled your hands up to cover reddening cheeks.
“It’s still a... weird thing to ask like this, in the middle of a cafe, isn’t it?” He shrugged and you rolled your eyes, not believing the situation.
“I honestly don’t think it’s that weird, but if you really don’t want to share-“
“No, it’s not that. I was just taken back a bit,” you said, cutting him off. “Yes, I’ve had sex. Is that all?”
“Was it any good?” You glared at him and he chuckled at your expression. “I mean, I know it can’t have been as good as it was with me, I’m-”
“Were you always this cocky?” He let out a laugh, shaking his head.
“New school, new Donghyuck, I guess.”
“But you haven’t stopped drinking that strawberry frappuccino since middle school, so how new of a Donghyuck is this really?”
A moment of silence followed and you could see how hard he was thinking for a good comeback, but nothing came out of his mouth that was hanging slightly open. Then it turned into a grin and he scoffed. “I guess that’s the exception that proves the rule.”
You two continued hanging out at the cafe for over an hour, just talking and catching up on what you’d been through these past years. Time flew by so quickly that all of the sudden there was a sunset right outside the window, so Donghyuck suggested that you could go out for a stroll. So soon, you were walking around the area near campus, you giving him a little tour of the neighborhood so that he’d get a proper introduction to the place. And when you passed your favorite Italian restaurant and you told him about how wonderful their pasta dishes were, Donghyuck almost begged for you two to stop for dinner, and how do you say no to his cute puppy eyes?
After a lengthy but very enjoyable meal, Donghyuck insisted on walking you to your dorm room, even though it was on the other side of campus from his own. And when finally there, a farewell-hug turned into a sweet kiss to your forehead and a whisper of “sleep well”, but right when he was about to turn away and walk to his own room, and he spotted the slight blush of your cheeks and smile tugging on your lips, he couldn’t hold himself anymore. He placed a hand on your cheek, cupping it softly, before leaning in and touching his lips against yours.
It was nothing more than just a quick peck, and when he pulled away, his eyes insecurely scanned yours for any sign of doubt. But there was none.
You grabbed the collar of his shirt and pulled him in for another kiss. And another. And another. You eventually giggled into the kisses, feeling him smile against your lips. He pulled away from you slowly, but stayed close enough for his nose to lightly touch yours and close enough for you to feel his breath tickling on your face.
“I never managed to forget about you,” he murmured. “I still like you.”
You shook your head, smiling. This felt surreal to you. Was this even real? You moved your hand to his cheek, caressing it and stroking your thumb against it. “Same for me.”
He kissed you again. But this kiss was different than the ones before. This kiss had so much more passion, almost making you a bit dizzy. Your lips melted against each other’s like they always did, making you weak in your knees. You threw your arms around the back of his neck, holding you close to him while deepening the kiss even further. As the kisses started getting quicker and more heated, he pushed you up against the door and started tracing his plump lips down your neck instead. With your fingers in his hair, you tried your best to control yourself and not make any sounds, other than letting out loud sighs every now and then. But eventually, you couldn’t take it anymore, so you spoke up.
“My roommate isn’t in, do you want to maybe-”
Before you could even finish your sentence, he pulled away and nodded quickly, pulling the door open and dragging you with him inside.

Happy Halloween!
It’s official - Spooky day is here! If you are going out please stay safe; things are crazy with COVID rn and it’s also hard to celebrate knowing what state our political climate is in right now! If you celebrate halloween, I just want to wish you a Happy Halloween but if you don’t celebrate it, Happy National Caramel Apple Day!
I’m a huge horror movie fan so here’s a list of my top favorite horror movies that I recommend you watch today or sometime soon and yes pls feel free to talk to me about any scary movie, chances are I’ve seen it!
“What’s your favorite scary movie?”
Hereditary - supernatural horror tragedy film that explores how families lash out in emotional violence after a tragic loss. Perfect movie to watch if you want to be scared and traumatized ever so slightly! Scary Scale 9/10 || Emma’s rating 10/10
The Witch - supernatural horror movie that takes place in 1630 New England and follows a Puritan family that accuses their daughter of witchcraft when their son vanishes. One word: peakaboo! Scary Scale 8/10 || Emma’s rating 7/10
10 Cloverfield Lane- science fiction psychological thriller film that follows a woman named Michelle, who wakes up in an underground bunker with two other strangers. She is told that there has been a chemical attack and she cannot leave but Michelle doubts if he is telling the truth. So many twists and turns and you start to go crazy too! Scary Scale 4/10 || Emma’s rating 8/10
Train to Busan- korean action horror film that takes place in south korea where a man and his daughter are stuck on a train with other passengers during a zombie outbreak. One of my all time favorite zombie movies but spoiler alert, you’ll need tissues! Scary Scale 4/10 || Emma’s rating 8/10
US- Psychological horror film where a family visits their beachfront home and one night, four strangers show up on their driveway and it is revealed that the strangers are the family’s doppelgängers. Perfect movie where everytime you watch it, you notice something new you didn’t catch the first time around also fuck that owl! Scary Scale 5/10 || Emma’s rating 10/10
Ready or Not- dark comedy horror film where a bride must participate in a ritual where she has to survive a game of hide and seek while her spouse’s family tries to kill her. Some comedic parts and some super gross parts but Samara Weaving is incredible! Scary Scale 4/10 || Emma’s rating 8/10
The Purge- dystopian action horror film that is based on a government sanction that for twelve hours, any crime, including murder, will be legal. The Sandin family are forced to fight for their lives to survive the night in their home after an homeless man seeks refuge after escaping from ‘Purgers’. I love the world building in this series and theres so much commentary on social class/crime/racism in America! Scary Scale 6/10 || Emma’s rating 10/10

Any recommendations on k-drama movies? thank you 😊
I’ve mostly only watched Korean movies, not the k-drama movie specials. I’ll bet my mutuals can weigh in on the more k-drama ones though?
Good Korean Movies:
Okja (it’s on netflix) about a small girl who loves a large creature normally used for a food source. It’s great and has a lot of capitalism and food chain themes. Plus who wouldn’t want a 10 year old girl to be the hero of a movie?
Parasite: Everyone knows this psychological thriller is my absolute favorite movie pretty much ever (I mean, except for The Last Unicorn lol). It’s funny and topical and creepy and a crazy ride.
The Handmaiden: Another thriller but this love triangle plot takes place in a historical setting. It’s so pretty to look at and I loved the story. @hey1tskat1e just pointed out that there is some mental and sexual abuse in this show - Trigger warning.
Train to Busan: I really do not like zombies...at all. But Train to Busan created a super interesting zombie, and a really great cast and setting made the movie scary and fun to watch.
Burning: I’m not going to say I loved this one. I have mixed feelings about this quirky and strange movie actually. It’s really well made and it’s a psychological thriller (wow seems like I like those!), and Yoo Ah In is really great in it. But it’s weird ok? It tackles the relationship between the rich and poor as it’s overall theme. But mostly, and I can’t quite put my finger on it, there’s something icky about the relationship between the two guys and the one girl...
The Host: This is an older movie by the director of Parasite (to be fair I am a fan and have seen all of this movies). It’s a monster movie about a creature kidnapping a man’s daughter and him trying to get her back. Bae Doona is in it!

2020 Music Recommendations
2020 – WHAT A SHIT YEAR! There was so much craziness in those 365 days – from politics to a pandemic. Music was often times one of those things we could take comfort in or use it as a tool to express a range of emotions. I’m always surprised when compiling these list (of which I’ve been doing for 20+ years now it seems) that no matter the state of the world, there is always an overabundance of great music to be discovered. 2020 musically, delivered - including surprising returns from some bands who’ve been rather quiet in the past years like Consolidated, Cabaret Voltaire, and Portion Control.
The majority of what I listen to is electronic based music, with techno-body music being my favorite and there was STILL PLENTY of that in 2020 from labels like Aufnahme+Wiedergabe, Fleisch, Bite, X-IMG, Sonic Groove, SOIL, and more. Occasionally something a little lighter like the ethereal shoe-gaze goodness of Mint Julep (“Stray Fantasies” was an amazing record), or the post-punk of House of Harm (wonderful new discovery this year with “Viscous Pastimes”) and Sure (you all slept on “20 years” in 2020) works its way in to my listening. I still find synth pop from the likes of Riki, Korine, Tanz Waffen and Wingtips wonderfully appeasing. The wave material from the likes of Handful of Snowdrops, Linea Aspera, Zanias, Hante., Minuit Machine and Replicant was perfect for those melancholy moods. I even dipped into some aggressive near metal stuff this year from the likes of Pudeur, ESA and Youth Code – perfect for those days of anger. Oh, and I was thrilled to see a lot of exclusive, unreleased and remixed Curve material surface this year – a band who embraces several genres (walls of guitar, shoe gaze, industrial) and moods.
This isn’t a top 10, top 25 or even a top 100. Instead, it’s an A-Z recommendation list encompassing many genres as those lines are getting more and more blurred. A good tune is a good tune, regardless of genre.
HIGHLY encourage you to get out there and seek out new music; Visit the record stores, go hear a new DJ, fire up Spotify or another streaming service, check out some new music via podcast, DJ mixes, label sites, online retailers, even Facebook. One of the best sources for discovering new music is BandCamp - who in 2020 with the pandemic started BandCamp Fridays in which the site waived its normal fees to assist artist impacted. Taking place, the first Friday of every month, those will continue in 2021. There’s a plethora of discoveries to be found out there. If you do the work, you’ll be rewarded ;) Speaking of Spotify – I made a playlist this year featuring plenty of the bands on my list. There’s at least a track or more from the artist who have a presence on Spotify. Sadly a few bands on this list aren’t on the platform, but check BandCamp and you can have a listen. Here’s the link: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/02kQJZE7uvJxwHJD8j8zrh?si=SHlP4mVRTuaRejh6So3Mig
As in years past I’m certain I missed a few things, ignored the hype on certain releases or just plain forgotten something. It’s a chore to compile this list, but I love to do it. There’s a ton of new pioneering music out there for sure waiting to be discovered and it’s the “what’s next” that keeps me a motivated music fan. There’s never a dull moment in speaking, writing, DJ'ing or promoting new music, so I’ll keep doing it and hopefully be a guide for you all ;). If it needs mention and I overlooked it - I may do an addendum in the next week or so. Anyways, got your notepaper and plenty of beverages ready? Don’t be a TL:DR (Too Long: Didn’t Read) fool. Read up. Enjoy the music of 2020!
Onwards with the list!!! :D

TOP 10 OF THE BIGGEST DISASTERS OF SITGES
Horror is the real, the realization, it´s the killer before you, the Nazis in power.
Horror has been with us from the beginning, since man is man. Not only some of us have learned to live whit it, but we like it when is with us.
We know we are not the only ones and yes, maybe, you are right, another digital magazine focused on horror cinema is not necessary but for us, horror is not just a cinematographic genre, we really believe in horror as part of our culture and terror as art.
In Surfing Horror you will find reviews but also curiosities, specials, tops and much more stuff related to horror.
And we are born today in the best way possible, making the opening post about the biggest disasters of Sitges Film Festival.
Let´s do it!
𝟏𝟎. 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐒𝐈𝐋𝐄𝐍𝐂𝐈𝐍𝐆
Revenge thriller in rural america. The silencing is not exactly a disappointment, we just don't understand why it has been selected for the official section of the sitges festival.
Unfortunately, this does not mean that we have liked it, it´s a product that we do not think can completely satisfy anyone, it doesn´t add anything that we have not seen before, it´s a very insipid thriller and the main plot doesn´t end up being of interest at any time.
Also, it has a slow and heavy rhythm that makes you look at the clock several times.
🔪🔪 / 5
𝟗. 𝐒𝐀𝐕𝐄 𝐘𝐎𝐔𝐑𝐒𝐄𝐋𝐕𝐄𝐒!
A hipster couple in their thirties decide to disconnect from everything and spend a few days outside the city without knowing that the world is suffering an alien invasion.
Once again we are faced with a very promising idea, but that's all it takes, a promise of a product that could have given a much more interesting result. At "save yourselves", we have science-fiction only as context, it is a mere excuse to present us with a comedy not very funny, dialogs without grace and some supposed middle-age problems that if you are not from the upper-class, you will not understand.
The film, maybe in another festival, would have been seen as a light comedy but sitges is not its place.
It's like if you go to a Metallica show and the opening act is Britney Spears.
🔪 / 5
𝟖. 𝐀𝐑𝐂𝐇𝐈𝐕𝐄
Failed attempt of the "man vs machine" debate. We can see the love for science fiction behind this film but we cannot feel it.
The pic looks wonderful, all the visual aspect of the film is very well taken care of and the atmosphere is very achieved but this is precisely the big problem, it seems that Gavin Rothery (director-screenwriter) has forgotten to tell us a good story. The script is not in the same level, there are too many unnecessary script turns (above all, the last one) and there are some characters out of place.
In "archive" everything is left to the end but it's too late for us to be interested.
🔪🔪 / 5
𝟕. 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐏𝐀𝐋𝐄 𝐃𝐎𝐎𝐑
In surfing horror, we also have a place in our heart for western, in fact, we love this genre but is not easy to mix it with horror and have a satisfactory result.
“The pale door” is not an exception, in the first hour we have a very little interesting western with empty characters and sets worthy of Ed Wood himself and in the last thirty minutes we have a witch film not more interesting than the western one. Genres are not touched at any time and the balance is non-existent.
Very ocassionaly, this explosive mix works, as on the case of the brilliant "Bone Tomahawk", however, this time, we have not had the same luck.
🔪 / 5
𝟔. 𝐁𝐄𝐂𝐊𝐘
A father and his daughter decide to spend a weekend on the lake, meanwhile, a group of prisoners escape from jail.
We think that in cinema, especially in horror, it doesn´t really matter what you want to tell us, the thing is "how" you want to tell us.
When you see the short description of "Becky", you can imagine what you are going to find, and indeed, it will not blow your head off, but anyway, you want to have a good time and you are ready to have a good time. Half an hour has already passed since the film started, there is nothing you dislike but you feel that you could be watching something better, for example, the news.
We don´t think that "becky" is a bad movie, it´s just that it has nothing important to say or anything special to add to the genre. In the characters section we have a Lulu Wilson (Becky) that does what she can taken into account that her character does not make much sense. She plays a rebel teen that if things go wrong, she will not hesitate to become a mercIless killer. On other hand, we have Kevin James, who plays a very crazy Nazi but not enough to remember him as a first level villain.
Anyway, we believe that it would have worked much better as a comedy and we would have liked that the script would have been more taken advantage off.
🔪 / 5
𝟓. 𝐁𝐋𝐀𝐂𝐊 𝐖𝐀𝐓𝐄𝐑: 𝐀𝐁𝐘𝐒𝐒
“Black Water: Abyss” is not a disappointment, it's just a movie that we have already seen a thousand times.
A group of friends decide to explore a cave and ... Surprise! There is a very hungry crocodile.
From the beginning, we can see that the film has many limitations; the tension is poorly maintained, the violence comes and goes in a very confusing way and it seems that there is no person directing behind the cameras.
If you really want to see a horror movie about dangerous animals, please, don´t watch this one.
🔪 / 5
𝟒. 𝐇𝐎𝐒𝐓𝐒
A family decides to invite their neighbors to dinner at Christmas, what they don´t know is that they are carriers of an evil identity.
Again, we have an interesting premise, a good start and a promise that what we are going to see next is going to make us have a good time but this never comes. Despite having some very well gore moments, the rest of "hosts" is empty, none of the characters contributes anything and you are waiting and waiting for the turn but again, this never comes and when you got it, the movie is over.
The best: a few very well gore moments.
The worst: there is nothing especially enjoyable other than a few good moments.
🔪 / 5
𝟑. 𝟏𝟐 𝐇𝐎𝐔𝐑 𝐒𝐇𝐈𝐅𝐓
In 12 hour shift we have an idea, that´s it. There's no more. You can feel during the whole long hour and a half that there is nothing else.
The characters and the situations are written with the intention of making us laugh and achieve just the opposite. We are left saturated and tired of eccentric unfunny characters and so many failed jokes. The worst of all is that it starts with an interesting premise but as we said, there is nothing else comes after that, a real pity.
The best: the starting point.
The worst: the rest of the movie.
0 / 5
𝟐. 𝐒𝐇𝐄 𝐃𝐈𝐄𝐒 𝐓𝐎𝐌𝐎𝐑𝐑𝐎𝐖
Take a concept, extend it until it has a feature film duration, insert absurd dialogues with tedious images full of neon lights and focus it on the indie public. The next step is to sell the product as it if were a surrealist and hilarious comedy.
The problem is that the joke is as funny as going to your grandma´s funeral and someone shits on her grave.
This is "she dies tomorrow"
The best: nothing
The worst: everything
0 / 5
𝟏. 𝐏𝐄𝐍𝐈𝐍𝐒𝐔𝐋𝐀
Without any doubt, the crown jewel of disappointments of this edition.
We love zombies movies, the merrier the better, if the movie goes straight to the point, much better, if there are not too many sub-frames or too many secondary characters so that we don't get distracted with things that do not interest, much much better, and if in addition, it mixes the action genre with zombies to the perfection, we have one of our favourite movies of the last years.
All that is “Train to Busan. That's why "peninsula" is so painful. It is not the worst of this top, it is not even considered a bad movie, in fact, you can get to enjoy (a lot) but we highly recommend that if you really want to watch it, please don´t do it thinking that this is a sequel of “train to Busan, because it isn't. It's an action movie with zombies, it's direct, entertaining and there's not too much time for sentimentalism.
The best: do you think that you can enjoy a hybrid between mad max and day of the dead? This is your movie.
The worst: it has nothing, but nothing to do with train to Busan.

Please Take Care Of Us
Idol!Taehyung x Chef!Reader
Genre: Slice of Life!AU, Smut, Fluff, Angst
Chapter 1.
Warnings: Smut, Pining, Two Crazy Kids Fallin’ In Love
"Service." You call to the runners of the night. On a Friday night with 260 people coming in to eat, cooking and plating quickly is no easy feat to accomplish.
"Come on everyone!" You call out loudly putting your dish on the pass and stepping off the cooking station. Without the head chef here and you having to give orders for the night, it's a daunting and scary task.
"Chef Yu-Na. VIP tables have ordered." You hear over the walkie-talkie near the Pass, where the plated dishes wait to be taken by servers to the guests tables.
"Okay." You mutter over the walkie talkie and look at all the line cooks who are staring at you with nervous expressions.
"Why are you staring at me? Make the dishes!" You say with a laugh.
"Yes, Chef!" They yell out before preparing the dish components with quick hands.
VIP guests always hold a sort of terror for the kitchen whether or not they really should. Dishes always have to be correct, always have to be on point and look appealing for the head chef to be satisfied. And, unfortunately, that task was up to you today.
You peak over at the pastry section of the kitchen and they keep getting tickets upon tickets for desserts to be rapidly sent out.
"Yoo-jae Oppa, do you need help?" You ask looking over at the pastry staff as they run around like chickens without heads.
"Ah, y-yeah." He calls over hesitantly as he focuses on plating.
"Kyung-soo." You call to the line sous chef and point to where you stand for him to call out orders while you help the pastry department.
"What do you need?" You ask running your hands over the side towel as you cross the kitchen.
"I need one red bean ice cream with matcha side cookies." He says pointing quickly to the freezer lowboy.
"Okay." You mumble grabbing a cold plate. You start quenelling ice cream onto a bed of oat brittle before grabbing the two matcha shortbread cookies and criss crossing them on the plate for looks.
"2 more of those please Chef." Yoo-jae oppa says before rubbing his hands together towards you and putting his plated desserts on the pass to be taken to tables. Starting to plate those for him, you hear Kyung-soo's voice.
"VIP plates are ready to walk, Chef." You look over with a huff before giving him a terse smile.
"Okay, give me a minute." You mumble before looking back down at the plate.
Trying to plate as quickly as you can, you try not to focus on the sweat breaking on your brow. Evaluating the level of food for the VIP tables is something new to you and you want to make sure you get it right. After a few minutes of plating, you shuffle back over to the pass with quick feet.
"Wipe those plates and take them out." You say nodding your head and wiping your hands on the side towel.
The night continues at the same pace before a runner comes down to the kitchen.
"Hey, Chef! The VIP tables want to see the Chef." A runner says to you plating up some warm bread.
Your head snaps up at his words.
"What? Why? Was something wrong with the food?" You ask a little too loudly fixing your pony tail.
"They ate it all so, I don't think so. They look happy. Maybe to pay you complements or something." He says focusing on fixing the bread properly.
You shrug at his words, a small niggling of nervousness turning your stomach.
"Send them a bottle of wine while I go spruce up." You tell him taking off your apron.
The chefs jacket has sauce smudges on it and you would have to change it.
"Kyung-soo." You call, pointing to where you were stood before taking off to the managers locker room.
You fix my eyeliner and smile at yourself in the mirror before frowning. This is so awkward, what if the VIP asks you where Hyun-Soo oppa is? What if you’re not head chef material for even a night when he's away. How awkward would that be?
Fixing your chefs jacket the locker room door opens.
"Hey girl." Hye-mi, the appetizer sous chef says taking her apron off.
"Hey." You mumble rubbing my hands together.
"Don't be nervous, what's the worst they could say? You look to young to be running a kitchen? Or you look foreign?" She says with a laugh, pushing you with her hip and then walking into a bathroom stall.
"Besides that, never mind me looking too younger or whatever, I'm sure they came in thinking that Hyun-Soo oppa was running the show." You say with a frown.
"Well too bad, shit happens. They'll get over it." She says through the stall.
"Yeah... I'll be going up now." You say putting your eyeliner back into your pocket.
"Fighting!" She says before flushing the toilet.
Barreling up the stairs starting to feel a bit awkward and faint, all of your thought were starting to feel suffocating.
"It's okay." One of the servers says walking past you with a dessert dish you helped plate. Could he feel your nervousness? Were you just radiating off of you like a portable heater? He plasters a gigantic smile as he approaches his table.
You start walking over to the VIP section of the restaurant. The server, whose name seems to be slipping from you in your nervousness, points at the long table that seats 10 people.
"Just breathe." He says with a smile. You give him a small smile and he laughs.
"I'll walk with you." He says putting his hand in his hair.
We approach the table and everyone turns to us.
"Oh my god." You hiss out as a group of 7 handsome guys turn towards you.
"Breathe." The server says before smiling at the table and bowing.
"This is Chef Y/N." The server says as you bow and try regain the breath that has been punched from your lungs.
Holy shit.
You’re standing in front of BTS.
Oh my God.
You look up and immediately make eye contact with Jin before looking down at the floor. Who doesn't know Bangtan? They're a world sensation right now.
The back of your neck breaks out into a sweat and now you really feel weak.
"Hello nice to meet you." A man sitting at the head of the table says bowing his head slightly.
"Hello." You whisper, bowing to him. Clearing your throat, your eyes shift between the man at the head and the marble flooring.
"Chef Yoo Hyun Soo hyung isn't here?" Jimin asks and you muster up a smile.
You knew it. Now it’s awkward. Cursing under your breath you look at Jimin.
"Unfortunately not, oppa- Chef Hyun Soo is away currently. I am the Head Chef for the time being." You say with a smile, they look disappointed.
"I'm sorry." You say awkwardly, clasping your hands together in front of your body like a defense mechanism. You focus back on the man at the head of the table, not even having the courage to look away. Seeing these guys staring back at you might make me faint.
"Well, we just wanted to say that the meal was fantastic." You hear Hoseok say with a smile in his voice.
"Thank you. I'm sure Chef will be happy to hear from such a great group like you guys." You say looking over at him and he gives a wide smile nodding his head.
"Do you have any dessert recommendations?" Jungkook asks looking up from his phone. You clear your throat again, does water not exist in this universe?
"I like the Busan honey dessert as well as the red bean ice cream. It's really yummy." You reply.
"Chef Y/N is originally an award winning pastry chef that Chef Hyun Soo picked up from New York." The server says with a wink before stepping away. You hit his back as he laughs walking away.
"Wow that's so impressive! Please, Chef, sit." The man at the head of the table says pointing next to Taehyung and Jungkook.
"Oh... thank you but I have to get back to the kitchen." You say pointing your thumb backwards awkwardly.
"Just for a few minutes?" Jin says before smiling. He tilts his head and pouts. God, have you died and gone to Heaven? Jesus.
"A few minutes." You say quietly, sitting down next to them.
Looking around at all the guys, you laugh at the sheer ridiculousness of being seated at the same table as them. They smile back relaxed. You’re sure that they experience this day in and day out.
"So cool." You say before meeting eyes with Namjoon.
"We loved the food so much!" Yoongi says to my left near the older guy with them.
"I'm Bang Si Hyuk, by the way, the CEO of their entertainment company." The man at the head of the table says.
"So nice to meet you." You say bowing your head with a smile.
"Your Korean is very good!" Jin says with a thumbs up.
"I was born in Busan then I moved to New York." You reply happily.
"Busan!" Jungkook and Jimin cheer. You laugh as their server comes back over.
"Dessert?" He asks holding up menus with a big smile.
"Anything that Chef Y/N suggests." Bang Si Hyuk says looking over at you.
"A taste menu perhaps?" You say to the server before he can even hand you the menus.
"Of course." He walks away with his hands behind his back.
"Well we called the Chef up because I wanted to ask a favour from him, even if it might be burdensome. I'm not sure I could ask such a burdensome thing from you." Bang Si Hyuk says taking a sip of his beer.
You tilt my head slightly.
A burdensome task? How weird.
"What burdensome task? If I may ask." You ask before a server brings you your usual kitchen nightcap. You take the glass of white wine with a laugh.
"Thank you." You mutter before bringing the glass to your lips.
The crisp, clean taste seems to calm you quicker. The burning in your stomach making you sit up straighter as Bang Si Hyuk continues to speak.
"After watching Take Care of My Refrigerator, I realized these boys and their manager cannot take care of themselves and they always order out. To have all the strength to be world conquering idols they should have prepared meals made with love. So my burdensome task would be to be the boys' personal chef and help them out to make them into healthier people with homemade meals." He says, gesturing his hands at the guys while they all look down embarrassed.
"Ahhhh." You say with a small smile.
Hyun Soo oppa is way too busy for all of that, unfortunately.
How can you tell them that when he sounded so excited about it? It's making you feel so bad.
"I unfortunately have so much on my plate I cannot accept this great offer you are giving me." You hear behind you. The voice has your head turning quickly as relief washes over you.
"Oppa!" You cheer happily and he smiles down at you before stroking your head lovingly.
"Hi Chef." He says with a laugh. The table stands up and bows with large smiles.
"That's so upsetting to hear." Bang Si Hyuk says with a pout.
You set down the wine glass. Now that Oppa is here you can go back down to the kitchen and you’ve never been more grateful.
Even though sitting before these seven handsome men is an honour, you would rather be back in the normal comfort of the kitchen.
"I'll be off." You say standing up and Hyun Soo puts his hand on your shoulder as you try to worm your way out.
"While I may be too busy, Y/N who I trust entirely is available." He says with a smile and Bang Si Hyuk puts his hand under his chin.
"Do this for oppa?" Hyun Soo says looking down at you.
Your eyes widen at his proposition. Leave the restaurant? How could you ever?!
Your mouth opens to speak and he gives you a wink, as if that’ll help to calm your now frantically beating heart.
“Really?” You whisper to him.
He nods slowly before smiling back at Bang Si Hyuk.
You would be with BTS every day? Oh my God. Hyun Soo oppa was always telling you to venture out and do things of your own. You couldn’t just stay in his restaurant forever.
"It would be my pleasure!" You say looking over at them.
God, they were so handsome.
"Excellent! If Hyun Soo has so many great things to say about you, I believe it entirely." Bang Si Hyuk says before smiling and picking up his beer again.
"Why don't you sit down with them and discuss. Since I'm back I can run the kitchen." Hyun Soo oppa says before bowing to all the guys and they stand up and bow to him.
"Sit! Sit!" Jin says excitedly.
You all sit back down and you loosen the top button on my chefs coat.
"Would you be okay with this agreement, Chef Y/N?" Bang Si Hyuk asks clamping his hands together.
"Chef said it's okay! And this is a really great opportunity." You say with a smile as you pick up the wine glass once again.
"They get up very early in the mornings. So it would be best if you lived very close by or even in the same building. If we could work it out, would you be willing to move into the boys building?" He asks you leaning back into his chair.
You living in the same building as BTS?!
"Chef?....Chef Y/N?" You hear to your left and you hadn’t even realized you spaced out. You turn to Jungkook.
"Hmm?" You ask tilting your head at him and he smiles closing his eyes.
"What do you say?"
"Oh!" I smile back at Bang Si Hyuk.
"Yes! No problem." You say with a giggle.
"Let's meet at the Big Hit building in a few days and go over a contract to go on this new journey, yes?" Bang Si Hyuk says raising his beer. You raise your wine.
"Yes!" You say before looking at all the guys and they smile at you raising their drinks as well.
"To good food and a new friend." Namjoon says lifting his beer with a smile.
Oh My God. What did you do so right in my past life?

What it’s like to live and teach English in South Korea
I have been teaching for nearly 10 years and during that time, I have had the privilege of teaching in a number of different countries. Therefore, I’d like to write a few posts for other travellers who may be thinking of following in my footsteps.
So, first of all, let’s go back to where it all began; Busan, South Korea. The year is 2008 and I had just finished my degree. Like a lot of graduates, I didn’t really know what I wanted to do with my life but I had spent the previous few years working with kids and I had loved it. Therefore, when my mum told me that the daughter of one of her friends was teaching in South Korea, I thought why not?
Before Going
One of the worst parts of my whole experience was before I went. First of all, a mate of mine was supposed to come with me but he dropped out - after we had had our leaving party! Then, the agent who I had been working with went on holiday and my visa application sat on her desk untouched. This meant that I was late arriving and I missed the training provided by the EPIK (English Program in Korea). That being said, I have since been told that the training was not fantastic and that a lot of my peers went to their respective schools feeling far from confident.
If you are planning to go to Korea, you must be in possession of the following things:
- A Bachelor’s Degree
- A passport from a native speaking English country (UK, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Ireland)
The following things are also important to consider
- No visible tattoos
- No history of mental illness
- No drug use (you are drug tested when you arrive)
However, remember that most employers in South Korea will pay for:
- Your rent
- Your flight (this will be reimbursed on arrival)
Arriving
Upon arriving in Busan, South Korea, I was taken to my school directly from the plane. Imagine my horror when I realised this - I was wearing a Hooters baseball top as it was the most comfortable and loose fitting thing I owned. I met the principal and had to give a little speech in front of all the other teachers - again something I wasn’t prepared for.
Just a day later, I was in front of my first ever class. I had been given a few textbooks (even then I could see what poor quality they were) and the powerpoints created by the previous incumbent of my position. I cobbled together an introduction lesson and stood up in front of the class. Now here is a huge difference to consider - will you be in a public school (organised by EPIK) or a hagwon (a private academy)? For an explanation of the difference, see the section below. I was with EPIK which meant I was assisted by a Korean co-teacher who translated everything I said into Korean. At the time, I thought this was great but I now realise that this is really bad practice. I was really glad she was there that day though as, 25 minutes into a 40 minute lesson, I ran out of things to say. Fortunately, she stepped in and ‘rescued’ me and by the time the next class rolled around, I had prepared a little more; enough to fill the time at least.
On the whole, I did the best I could in class but with no formal training, I acknowledge my lessons were pretty awful. That’s why I would definitely recommend getting a CELTA before teaching anywhere. Not only does it prepare you for what it’s like to stand in front of a class but you also get a slight salary bump as well.
EPIK or Hagwon?
EPIK
Advantages
A Korean co-teacher handles discipline and is on hand to translate any difficult words.
You don’t teach the same class all the time so you can ‘rinse and repeat’ lessons which means less planning.
Your classes are often cancelled as they are not high priority. This means you often get paid for doing nothing. For me, this was actually a disadvantage because I went stir-crazy with nothing to do for long periods.
You work a traditional work week - 8.30-4.30, Monday-Friday.
You are much less likely to get bad accommodation, although this does happen.
Disadvantages
Days are very repetitive
You may be the only native speaker teacher there which can make meeting new people difficult
You sometimes feel like a circus attraction - the kids used to come to my class just to stare at me or pull hairs out of my arms.
Hagwon
Advantages
Higher salary
You teach the same children so you have a chance to learn names and build a relationship with them
There are other native speakers around for you to interact with.
You are given full lesson plans to work with
Disadvantages
There are a lot of shady operators who do not treat their teachers very well, e.g. a friend of mine was made to live in her boss’ basement.
You work until late. The normal work day is 2-10pm.
Your classes are NEVER cancelled. If you are contracted to work those hours, there will always be students there.
You have to handle discipline yourself.
Life in Korea
Socialising in Korea
Socialising in Korea was incredible. I quickly got myself into a football team of native speaker teachers and travelled all over Korea with them and I had a large group of friends. While the majority of my free time was spent out drinking and partying, I also had some of the most incredible experiences there including:
- Making Kimchi (see food) with monks
- Diving with sharks at the Busan Aquarium
- Jumping off the Daegu Tower (unfortunately this is now closed)
- Playing in a volleyball tournament on Haeundae Beach in Busan
- Being invited to a co-teacher’s house for traditional Korean food
- Visiting incredible temples - Yonggungsa in Busan is stunning!
2. Korean Food
I miss the food - my God how I miss the food! When I arrived, I wasn’t convinced by the food but after being shown around by my new friends, I realised that Korean food is fantastic. Here are some of the things you need to try
- Kimchi. The Korean staple, Kimchi is fermented cabbage served in a chilli sauce. While it may not sound nice, it’s different in every restaurant that you visit and when you find 2-3 restaurants where they make good kimchi, you will not be able to stop eating it. Popular variations are Kimchi-jigae (Kimchi soup) and Kimchi-Pahjon (Kimchi pancake) which are also delicious.
- Samgyupsal and Bulgogi. Order raw meat and cook it on your own personal grill with onions, garlic, Korean chilli paste and Kimchi. Then enjoy family style!
- Hae-Jang-Guk. Translated this means ‘hangover soup’ and boy does it do the job. The contents are pork spine with a fiery broth. The meat just melts in your mouth and you can add rice for extra yumminess.
- Tang-Soo-Yuk. Korea’s answer to sweet and sour, this is much more tasty in my opinion. Sticky and really unhealthy, it’s another thing you won’t want to stop eating.
- Ojingo. Squid that is served while it is still moving. This is an acquired taste but something you have to try. The sensation of the suckers sticking to the inside of your mouth is bizarre but unique.
3. Korean people/customs
On the whole, you will find Koreans a pleasant enough bunch and some of the younger generations have grown up having native speaking English teachers so it is normal for them. Make an effort to have some Korean friends even though it’s tempting to just hang around with other English speakers. Some of my best experiences came with my Korean friends Gyu-Ho, and (Super) Hans. However, there are a few things you should be aware of. Do not get into any kind of conflict with a Korean as your status as a foreigner means you are always in the wrong (even in the eyes of the police in some cases). Koreans are fiercely protective of their language and are not especially helpful when you make mistakes. Do what I didn’t and take classes to make sure your pronunciation is spot on.
Korean people (especially women) love to form relationships with native speakers and while they are very affectionate and undeniably attractive in a lot of cases, this can cause problems with old-fashioned families. One friend of mine was told that he would marry his Korean girlfriend ‘over her father’s dead body’.
This section seems unduly negative and I don’t want it to be. Most of the people I met were great people and were so happy that I was there to share in their culture. The negative sides of this part are more a case of ‘forewarned is forearmed’.
In terms of customs, you will often find that you will need to remove your shoes before entering a house or, in my case, even a school. However, they will often provide slippers/sandals for you to wear.
While eating there are a few customs to be aware of. A lot of meals in restaurants are served on low tables which require you to sit cross-legged. I am the least flexible person ever so this was not an enjoyable experience for me. Also, the person sitting opposite you is your ‘partner’ and you are ‘responsible’ for them, Make sure they always have a drink in front of them and serve it to them with one hand while holding the other on your bicep, e.g. serve with your right hand, your left hand should be on your right bicep. Finally, please please please learn to use chopsticks before you go. When I arrived, I didn’t know how to use them and it caused me no end of embarrassment. When I finally learned, my Korean co-teachers and waiters/waitresses in restaurants were so happy. It’s a small thing but it makes a huge difference.
The last major custom that you should be aware of is the different approach to nudity. Koreans will often visit jjimjilbangs (spas) with friends and coworkers. Once inside, the men and the women are separated and go into large spa rooms/hot baths completely naked. This is normal but Korean people are a little prone to staring especially if, like me, you are quite hirsute.
4. Shopping in Korea
While you are in Korea, you will still be able to get a lot of your home comforts. In Busan, they have a Costco where you can buy a lot of Western food although you have to buy it in bulk.
In terms of clothes, you need to be aware that sizes differ drastically. Here in the UK, when buying a pair of shorts, I wear a medium but in Korea my shorts were an XL! Also, for women, if you are busty, it can be very difficult to find clothes that will fit. A friend of mine once went into a shop and the shop assistant pointed at her chest and said “No size, no size”.
As you might imagine, electronics are cheap so there’s no need to take too many gadgets with you. I bought a really nice camera out there much cheaper than I could have bought it in the UK.
5. Transport/Getting Around in Korea
The best way of travelling from city to city in Korea is the KTX (the bullet train). This super-fast train is affordable and comfortable and is a pleasure to travel on. If you’re on a budget there is also the mugunghwa which is an older, slower train that is used to get to smaller towns and villages.
In terms of travelling in the city, most of the big cities have a subway system which makes it easy to get around. I used this opportunity to learn the Korean letters as all the stations are in Korean and in English. There are also buses that you can use if there isn’t a subway station near where you are heading. Finally, taxis are much cheaper than in the UK (I’d say cheaper even than Uber) but make sure that you know how to pronounce where you’re going - I got into a rather heated argument with a taxi driver about my pronunciation of White Hotel as the Korean pronunciation was White-uh Hoe-ter. As you might imagine, I was quite upset about having my pronunciation of English words corrected.
Last word
Overall, Korea is a wonderful place and a part of me still misses living there. The quality of life is great and as an English teacher you will be financially comfortable.
I hope this guide to living in Korea has been helpful and if there is anything I haven’t covered or if you have any questions, feel free to contact me.

An Intro to SF9
These 9 dorks are my loves™ and that is why I need to share them with y’all that might not know them. They’re playful, funny, visuals blessed by Jesus himself, pure Dancing Kings and the Gods of Variety Shows alright.
Thanks @moonlightkth, I’m definitely a Fantasy because of you girl.
@sugasugahanihani you better stan or I’m coming to your place and I’m showing you the variety shows and m/vs myself babe.
Got my info on the members here Debut Date : October 5 2016
Fandom Name : Fantasy
- They debuted after D.O.B (Dance or Band) where they were in competition against a Band team (SF9 being the Dance team under the name of Neoz Dance Team) and won !
- They’re all dancers (and tbh bless)
- Their music style makes me think of a mixt between EXO and Monsta X (that does not mean they are not unique in their own way though ! But if you want a good idea of what to expect, it’s the same kind of style in my opinion)
- Good songs to discover them for the first time are ROAR, Fanfare, Easy Love, K.O and O Sole Mio from their last comeback. - They almost all physically look like other celebrities I swear to God. Members (not in order of age*) :
*Not the Korean age
1. Rap Line
- Youngbin (23 years old)
The group’s leader. He is a very dedicated leader and also has a playful and happy side to his personality. He loves skinship and is like a Dad to the other members. That boy is a blessing and his lively, bad boyish rap would get anyone shook.
- Zuho (21 years old)
The rapper™. He acts all tough like he is a cold, mysterious guy on stage but off stage he’s actually a pure angel who’s a mess (just look at his dance in the Immigration at 7:45) that is loveable as hell.
Who he looks like : Lee Jun Ki
- Hwiyoung (18 years old)
The Visual. Like okay yes it’s also rowoon (you’ll see later) but nah seriously this kid is the Visual™. Just look at him in ROAR and tell me he didn’t bias wreck the shit out of you (because he did for me, he bias wrecked my whole list I swear). Anyhoo he’s a 99 liner and why do I mention it it’s because he’s my age and I love 99 liners ok. He has a shy, cute (he’s embarrassed after doing aegyo but let’s be real the boi knows how to do it), playful and cry baby side to him but sometimes he can just switch to a sexy beast and I die.
Who he looks like : On some angles that guy looks like he’s related to B.A.P Bang Yong Guk (I know it’s a weak comparison but it’s still true)
- Chani (17 years old)
The actor. His dance moves are a pure blessing on this earth tbhh. He’s 17 so he’s not that young but he looks like he’s 14 and he’s cute so y’all better take care of my son. He may be shy sometimes but his dancing is no joke, that boy knows how to move his body let me tell you that.
Who he looks like : NCT Haechan
2. Vocal Line
- Rowoon (21 years old)
The Ladies’ man (not in a macho way, he just seriously is the visual of the group for a reason like damn the guy could be an ulzzang). He’s kind, cares A LOT about the younger members, has a mesmerizing voice and is hella attractive. Many fans love him the most because of his good looks and, well, who can blame them ?
- Inseong (24 years old)
The Smartass. The oldest. Studied in England so can speak English very well. Has one of those voices Is2g it’ll get you shook. Loves poetry and drawing, definitely boyfriend goals, 10/10 would recommend.
Who he looks like : NCT Doyoung
- Dawon (22 years old)
The MC. When God made him he dropped the “extroverted” and it made Jimin-I mean Dawon. The boy has good looks (I couldn’t get my eyes off him in O Sole Mio) and can get all the attention on him with his craziness (in a good way mind you) and extra™. Definite bias wrecker
Who he looks like : BTS JIMIN. BTS JIMIN. BTS JIMIN. Nah like my dude literally Jimin and him are the same guy but one is the introvert version and the other is the extrovert version. I’m still not over the ressemblance ok deal with it
- Jaeyoon (23 years old)
The man from Busan (if you don’t get the inside joke yet it’s alright it’ll come). Legends say he is very manly and brave. Truth showed the bitch is scared of everything lmao I love him from the bottom of my heart. He’s very bright and cheerful. His gaze is quite something (I can’t explain it. but when he decides to really give his 100% when looking at the camera prepare to be shook) and Weekly Idol showed us the boy masters the holy art of dance covers.
- Taeyang (20 years old)
Ending it with our personal Dance God. You gotta see it to believe it, he got some moves™ that are just amazing. He’s close to the two others young members (Chani and Hwiyoung), is calm and kinda shy. He makes me think a lot about Kai in some ways !
Moral of the presentation : brace yourself cause you're gonna stan (like how could you not).
They went to Weekly Idol, they went to the Immigration, they have their personal Vlive and they are complete dorks. Not only are these boys talented af, but they will keep you entertained for sure !

I just read proposal yesterday and thought it was so sweet! I was wondering if you have any fics you could recommend? Jimin is my bias but I'm pretty open to any members with the reader. Thanks and keep up the good work! Kep jarng! 😁
Aghh thank you so much, sweetheart! I’m so glad you enjoyed Proposals and I’m really flattered that you’re asking me for recommendations! :D Okay, here’s a list of my fave fics that you should check out if you haven’t already. So you aren’t confused, the stuff in italics is the synopsis/description the writer provided and the indented bit is me being incoherent and lame as always.
Sin City (Jimin x reader) by @btssmutgalore: After a run of bad luck, you can go back home and admit defeat or step out of your comfort zone and look for a job at Sin City.
Hands down the best stripper au I’ve ever read. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from this fic because you never know where stripper AUs are going to go, but holy moly am I glad I gave this a chance. You will be addicted to this fic. Jimin’s character has so much depth, but he’s such an enigma at the same time and I’m dying to know what the heck he’s thinking/what his background is. The tension is so drawn out and the sessy scenes are all so different, which is really refreshing to read and you don’t know what’s going to come next. ALSO, I feel like there’s a lot of empowerment and respect in this fic, which makes me so happy. Love love love this fic with my entire being.
Monster (Jeongguk x reader) by @btssmutgalore: You sleep with an obnoxious fratboy who used to be your friend.
This fic is perfection. It doesn’t have a complicated plot, but it’s still so interesting to read and the smut is A++++. Jeongguk’s character has so many facets and though he has a lot of issues to sort through, I’m rooting for him and the OC so much.
Purple Jewels (Jimin/Jeongguk x reader) by @jiminniemouse: When you fall in love with Jungkook and he isn’t there to catch you, a sudden surprise shows up to give you a little bit of help.
GENIE!JIMIN. AKLSDJFKLAASKDJFLK (I really tried not to keyboard smash but fuck I lose my shit because of how much I love this fic). Oh man, where do I even begin with this?? It’s my absolute favourite Jimin x reader fic and one of my absolute fave fics in general because it’s written so well, it’s creative, the characters are interesting, AND THE TENSIONNNN. I come so close to combusting with each part and I’m dying for more. Also Jimin’s character is so sweet and I love him so much (where can I find myself a genie Jimin???). Please please please read this!
Hiraeth (Jeongguk/Taehyung x reader) by @jungkxook: A world full of dwindling hope and lost loves and yet you and Jungkook are all the other needs to feel at home.
This is the first member x reader fic I ever read and IT IS THE BEST THING EVER. EVER. It’s a zombie apocalypse au and it’s so angsty and sometimes it feels like my heart has been punched out of my chest and it’s such a wonderful feeling even though it hurts like hell. The world is constructed so believably and there are so many well thought out details to it, so when you’re reading it feels REAL. All the characters are different and you never know what’s going to happen next. I can’t recommend reading this enough, it is freaking incredible (and the love triangle is fucking me up so bad).
Philophobia (Jimin/Jeongguk x reader) by @minsvga: sex has its consequences, always; whether for better or for worse, sex always has its consequences. and the drunken rendezvous you have with your best friend is not an exception.
This is discontinued but it’s still worth reading because it’s so freaking hot and I love the plot and just??? I don’t usually read fuckboy fics because fuckboys are the bane of human existence, but this fic is amazing and the smut is awesome. Also be prepared to not know who you’re rooting for. One second I would want Jimin to win the OC’s heart and the next I wanted Jeongguk to end up with her, so brace yourself for conflicting feelings.
Company (Namjoon x reader) by @fireheart-namjoon: Sometimes all you want is a bit of company.
OKAY before I scream about the sessy stuff in this fic, I really want to say that I fucking loved Namjoon’s characterization in this and it’s so nice to read an OC who is strong and independent. The writing style is absolutely fantastic and the thigh riding was 100000/10.
Retrograde (Jeongguk x reader) by @remembeo: fantasy!au
When I read this I feel the way I do on rainy, dark days when I’m reading a book and just slip away into the world on the page. The details and the way this is written are so mesmerizing and I want to know more. You’re so swept away by everything that you completely forget about the reality for a little while.
A Roadtrip (Jeongguk x reader) by @taeinmycup: Jungkook makes your planned roadtrip to Busan a bit messy.
Road trip fics never get old and neither does the childhood-friends-to-lovers plot either. This was a wonderful fic to indulge in and um the frick frack is pretty damn nice. Just saying.
Sutures and Stitches (Jeongguk x reader) by @hayjeon: hitman!jeongguk and medstudent!Y/N bestfriends!au; Jeongguk always shows up to your place or hospital whenever he gets hurt because you guys are best friends and you patch him up, but he has no idea that every time you stitch up his wounds, it tears open new wounds in your own heart.
I recently read this and I am OBSESSED. I refresh the OP’s page daily just to make sure I didn’t miss an update. The writing is so detailed and Jeongguk’s character is so interesting, I just want to know what the heck happens next + how Jeongguk ended up with this kind of life.
Chrysalism (Jimin x reader) by @workofteaguk: Bookstores have always lured you in with the promise of the quiet, the serene, and, most recently, him.
THIS IS THE SWEETEST FREAKING THING AND I WISH IT WERE LONGER. It made my entire day when I read it and I was smiling the entire time. Where do I have to go to find a cute boy like this???
It’s All Fun & Games (Jeongguk x reader) by @workofteaguk: In which you and Jungkook attempt to fake a relationship for revenge and end up with a lot more than either of you expected.
When will fake relationship AUs not be the best thing in existence? The answer to that is never. I don’t care how many times people write this concept, it will always be so fun to read because of the angsty feels. So if you’re as trash for this as I am, then absolutely read this.
Sounds of You (Jimin/Jeongguk x reader) by @vivacioustae: As a young girl you dreamt of hearing the bells, the ones that signaled you had found your soulmate, the missing piece everyone was so desperate to find. After falling in love with Jimin you abandoned the search, hoping you would come to never hear the bells, preferring to continue your life with him uninterrupted. You’d soon come to learn the harshness of fate, and that it doesn’t care about your hopes, feelings, or you.
Listen, from the very first sentence of this fic, I was completely hooked. From the get go you know that it’s going to mess with your emotions, but it’s worth it. I love this concept so much and my heart is aching reading this. After reading the first part, this fic is all I could think about and my heart ached because I wanted to know what was coming next, but also wasn’t prepared for it. Love love love this.
Teamwork (Taehyung x Seokjin x reader) by @sugajpg: Peculiar events occur when the two best volleyball players of your college decide to take competitiveness out of the courts.
Best threesome fic I’ve read so far. I’m just. :’’’’’)) I’m still screaming. Fml this is too good and I feel the flames of hell licking my feet but screw it. Where do I sign up for this?
Like Crazy (Jimin x reader) by @war-of-hormoan: This story is based off the film by the same name.
Because I don’t care about my well-being in any way, I started this fic and I love it so much so far. The film Like Crazy is incredible, but it feels like you’ve been punched in the gut twenty times by the end, and it made me sob… like crazy. So this fic will probably end up doing that too and as nervous as I am for that, it’s so worth it. Everything is written so vividly and the relationship between Jimin and the OC is so sweet to read. I’m really excited to see how this progresses.
Grey Area (Yoongi x reader) by @blushoseoks: And just like that, your fate was sealed - because Min Yoongi was absolutely going to destroy you. But hell, if you weren’t going to let him, or bask happily in the flames as he did so. And sadly, at the time, you didn’t think that your thoughts would become so literal.
THIS IS SO WELL WRITTEN. SO. WELL. WRITTEN. Ohmygod, I’m in love with this writing style and THE CONCEPT IS AMAZING. The ending of part one left me feeling like I’d been kicked in the gut or something and you’re all ???? wtf is going on??? and you’re completely hooked so you binge read the rest. This fic is perfection.
Until Next Time (Jimin x reader) by @taeverie: Who would have guessed that a stranger you met through an online game would quickly escalate into a cyber fuck buddy?
OK OK OK UM LET ME GATHER MY THOUGHTS HERE. First off, how can I be the OC?? Second off, HOW CAN I BE THE OC???? I wouldn’t have the balls to actually be this forward in real life but still, this just kept escalating and they didn’t even really do the hanky panky but it was still hot as fuck and 10/10 would recommend.
Not So Honest (Jeongguk x reader) by @wonhopes: Jungkook has got a pretty big problem, and he desperately asks you for your help.
Hi hello yes be prepared to explode ok this was TOO good oml. I’m also a slut for sub!jeongguk because that sinful man deserves to be tortured the way he tortures us so this was a glorious find (though the roles do reverse in the end but whatever THIS WAS GREAT).
Obey (Jimin x reader) by @sugasgrowl
sub!jimin. Must I say more? I spontaneously combusted like ten times while reading this and would gladly undergo that again because it’s so nice to read fics where the roles reversed and I would give up a limb to see Jimin in such a debauched state.
All To Myself (Jimin/Yoongi x reader) by @mint-tape: “It’s hard to be a vlogger when half your subscribers care more about your hot friends than you.”- Y/N, from her April 23, 2016 vlog titled ‘Jimin shows his stupid abs 8 times (not clickbait)’
THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST CREATIVE FICS I HAVE EVER READ IN MY LIFE. All the ‘videos’ and the ‘comments’ and just everything about this is absolute perfection. The characters are all diverse and the OC is really likeable. Just. I’m glad I found this fic, it’s so unique and all these extra goodies make the read even more fun.
The Blue Notebooks (Jimin x reader) by @inktae: time travel au
Honestly, I don’t even know what to write about this because I’m still speechless. No words can capture how beautiful the writing is (all her work is beautiful) and how well emotion is captured in this. Everything is so thought out and all these little details come together to form the bigger picture. Do yourself a favour and read this as well as all the rest of the OP’s writing. She is so freaking talented and we are all blessed to be able to read her work.
…Sorry, that got ridiculously long. @_@ For member x reader fics I tend to read Jimin/Jeongguk focused stuff, if it’s not incredibly obvious… Oops. Am I Jimin biased or jiguk biased? Anyway. I hope this list helped and I’m sorry it took so long for me to respond, I just wanted to get through some of the fics I had saved in case I wanted to recommend them. Enjoy!

Asia Trip Recap
I think I write this with some heaviness in my heart because I regret picking fights with him during the trip. Note to self: don’t travel with your SO when you’re PMSing!!
A few days before the trip, we met up at Wurst to plan our itinerary. I was tired from work but decided to meet up with him anyway. Again, he arrived later than he said he would and that put me in a bad mood. When I realized he was going to be late again, I almost cancelled on him and thought “maybe our relationship would be easier if it was long distance, so we won’t have to deal with these things”. During our dinner, I was annoyed because I felt he was judging me by putting extra sauce on my sausage. He made a disgusted face at it and said it tasted bad, and kept asking me why I liked it because I normally like to eat clean. I didn’t say anything that day and had the night to review what happened. I brought it up to him over text the next day saying that I felt he was being mean. He tends to bend over backwards and admits to wrongs, but i think he started feeling like he was always wrong. He tends to think “big picture” and in this fight, he understood that we were having a fight over food and that was dumb- and that he’s sorry and won’t do it again.
On the morning of our trip, he drove over to pick me up with his mom, who was going to drive the car back from the airport. They parked outside of my house, a few houses up, and my mom and grandma saw me out. Matt and his mom waved from outside of their car and I lugged my suitcase over. I was really nervous meeting his mom again. She was a part time physical therapist at the senior center I used to work at, and I remembered speaking with her a few times. The first thing she talked to me about was Cambodia… how Cambodia and China started off at similar playing fields, but that China advanced way faster. And that she really liked Cambodia. When I saw her I gave her a smile and a “hi”, but she just went for my luggage and was like let me take that. It was like a basic Asian greeting, which I am more comfortable with. So I was standing with Matt and his mom and waving bye to my mom and grandma. As were they. And it was kinda awkward because they’ve never met or knew of each other’s existence before lol. The car ride wasn’t that bad… she asked me a few questions about living in Echo Park and stuff about our trip. Me being the way I am, I said like a sentence in response to the questions and stayed quiet otherwise. I was sitting in the backseat and heard them talking about typical Asian stuff like universities, education etc. that almost put me to sleep LOL. I understood what he told me then, that his parents are pretty serious and he doesn’t joke around/laugh with them. Whereas I’m constantly joking with my parents and never really speak seriously with them. When we arrived at the airport and said our goodbyes, she told me while pointing to Matt, “he is a crazy boy”. Later on, Matt said that it was weird how his mom was fake laughing in the car and weird how she referred to him as a “crazy boy” since she’s never done so. When we boarded the airplane, I texted my mom and he texted his that we were about to fly. His mom responded additionally with “Connie is a good girl. Treat her well.” I saw the message pop up on his apple watch and he quickly swiped it away, because I think he saw my name and wasn’t sure if it was a weird message or not. But I read it quickly before he could haha. He responded with “Ok” and it made me feel good that his mom kinda accepts me.
The plane ride with ANA was great because it’s ANA and they have exceptionally good airplane food. We also got to play sexually a little on the plane so that was fun. I got mad at him again at the airport when I felt he was questioning me too much lol so that was like another hour wasted on negative energy. When we checked into our first Airbnb, it was worse than we expected… the floors were also dirty and I felt dirty laying on the bed. After I got up from the bed, I felt itchy. We were dirty as well being on the airplane/traveling for the last 15 or so hours. We ended up having sex and then showering/changing to get ready for the night. We both weren’t happy with the accommodation so we looked into other options. We went downstairs to speak with the host person, and he agreed the place wasn’t as nice as the pictures, i.e. “I admit that the pictures are professionally taken lol” lmao. So he agreed to refund us and we agreed to pay the clean up fee. I later contacted Airbnb with photos of the dirty floor and they refunded me the rest. We ended up checking into a nice hotel like 4-5 blocks away. The taxi ride there was $10! But it was wayyy more comfortable. After that experience, I was afraid the Airbnbs I chose for Korea and Taiwan weren’t going to be as good, and thought maybe doing hotels for Asia would have been a safer choice. When I came last year with my mom, there were two instances when we had to cancel our Airbnbs and stayed at hotels as well.
That night, we asked the hotel guy for recommendations. The place he recommended for izakaya was just alright… I think he recommended only like the “touristy” restaurants where they have English menus. We walked around til close to midnight and went back to sleep, so that we would be on the new timezone. The next day, we went to the Tsukiji fish market, Asakusa temple, Shibuya, standing sushi, and Kobe beef dinner. I thought the standing sushi was really fun and interesting. The other places I’ve already been to last year, so they weren’t that big of a deal to me. Tbh, the food in LA is just as good or even better than the places we had in Japan. The last (half day) we were in Japan, we had soba at a little shop outdoors that seats like 8 people max. That was one of the highlights. We also got to see the cherry blossoms… and those were beautiful. I was reminded at the garden that I’m more of a naturey/countryside person than a city person. (I enjoy the city only for food haha). Matt’s back hurt a lot the first night. I remember getting up at 5am to give him a massage. We did some yoga and I really enjoyed taking baths and using the bidets/toilets.
Going to Busan was a struggle. I didn’t know that the train to the airport only came once every half hour (instead of every 10 min or so). We were freaking out because we thought we were going to miss the plane. Once we got to the terminal, we ran and ran lol. And we literally got to the check in like 10 minutes before the window would close. After check in was another struggle, going through security. The line was longer than we thought, but we made it! We got to the gate as people were boarding. Very close call and stressful. I was so hungry on the plane that I ended up ordering instant noodles and paying for a bottle water.
It was gloomy when we reached Busan. We waited for the airport “limousine” bus to the city. There were a lot of Hong Kong people waiting around too. I started feeling sick and hot and took my sweater off on the bus. Matt said to put my sweater back on or that I will get sick. He said it’s the stress and being in a new environment that I can’t feel that I’m cold but I really am.. so I thought that was caring of him and put my sweater back on. It was my first time being in Korea. When I saw all the taxis lined up, I was reminded of the Korean dramas I used to watch. It was like K-drama coming to life for me. We stayed near the Busan station and the location was perfect. There were restaurants and coffee shops everywhere, and it was close to the station. It took a while to find the Airbnb but we were both blown away by it once we entered. Ironically, it was the cheapest Airbnb of our trip as well. The view was fantastic and everything was new. The washing machine was nice. The fridge was built into the cabinets. The A/C and heater were all new and so technologically advanced. I remember that about Busan’s airport- how advanced it was. Even though Japan is known as the city of the future, their airport was under renovation and all their workers were old and slow. The machinery they used was also kinda outdated. Not in Busan. The best thing about the Airbnb was the heated floors. I didn’t realize they were heated until I woke up in the middle of the night to go pee. The first meal we had was pork soup and rice, with sides. I really enjoyed it because it was clean and we had way too much ramen the few days before. Busan also had way less tourists than Tokyo. I felt like tourists/foreigners were everywhere we went in Tokyo. Most people knew how to speak English. In Busan, there were like no tourists around and no one spoke English. It was definitely more fun that way.
The first (and only) full day we had in Busan, I wanted to eat at a little restaurant in the train station. The food didn’t look amazing, but it was one of the few things open and the owner seemed nice and encouraged us to eat there. As we sat down, Matt said “I’d rather eat at McDonalds”, which I got angered by and started a fight by calling him judgmental. The mood was tense the first few hours, mostly on my end. And it seems our “fights” mostly revolve around him being late or something food related (wait for the last fight). I guess we learned how to work with each other. When I was living in Taiwan, and visiting Japan with my mom last year, we often just chose restaurants by random. I was down to do that this time too, but he wasn’t so much into the idea. He prefers to yelp or use Tripadvisor for the restaurants we eat at, even though he claims he “doesn’t care about food” (eyeroll). So I would get annoyed when after being on Yelp or TA for a while he still couldn’t decide on something, or when he’s looking down on his phone so much he’s missing things in action. His argument is that he wants to have a plan of action, and he wants the decision to be a good one. My argument is that you can kinda tell whether food will be good or not by looking at the menu/restaurant/food in front of you and consulting the internet isn’t always necessary.
Anyway, we went on our day as planned. The temple was okay, the beach was nice- had a Santa Monica vibe to it, but it was foggy and we couldn’t see much. The cultural district with the “slum” view was super nice. Afterwards we went to a seafood market. It was then when he realized he wasn’t as adventurous as he thought. I learned that he wasn’t as adventurous as I thought too. He really enjoys watching travel vloggers (mostly white people) so I thought he would be into trying new things/food. But sometimes I felt he was like a white guy in a Chinese guy body- minus Chinese food, he can eat that. We went into the Jalgachi market and ran into a Chinese store owner. “I’m Chinese, not Korean. I’ll give you some extra free seafood for being Chinese” he told us. So we walked around and checked out the other stalls and came back to the Chinese guy. I got to try live octopus for the first time! Years ago, I was keen on trying it in Koreatown but for some reason couldn’t find a place and gave up. I also read that there were some deaths related to eating this because the tentacles may suck on the inside of your throat, but I don’t know how true that is. It was just as I imagined it tasting. I think it’s just the novelty that is fun. It was really nice going back to the Airbnb and sleeping next to such a nice view in a nice apartment.
Learning from our previous hurdle, we got to the airport early this time. However, we faced another hurdle… I think because Korean technology is too good. They stopped my luggage because I had about 40-50 face masks and it was required that I have them in a zip lock bag. The lady was nice enough to bring two out, but I was sad when I saw that there were about 15-20 that couldn’t fit and that were would have to throw them away if I didn’t check in my luggage. Most of the face masks, I had bought from Japan to give to my mom as she requested. The others, I had bought from a Korean store thinking it was special (later on finding out that they sell them here at target!!!) I couldn’t decide on the spot, but I looked sad that I had to throw them away. Matt went ahead and checked them in for a fat fee of $50 and regretted it immediately. When we were figuring out what to do, he said it’ll cost $50 to check in. When I asked him are you sure? He said he wasn’t sure so in my head I thought maybe it’s only $25. But internally he was sure. He felt bad about that, and I venmo’d him the money immediately because it was all my stuff. We both felt bad about it. At least we got to check out a few cool lounges at the airport.
At the Taipei airport, I learned about mainland Chinese people. They do not leave gaps when waiting in lines because people will cut. That is something Matt is cognizant about. They have a different understanding of personal space and will get up all in your business. I was annoyed by them and understand what people mean when they say Chinese people are rude… but it helped me understand where Matt is coming from sometimes. They’re just blunt and to the point and it is normal for them to speak that way. Maybe I’m the more Americanized one? At our last airport stop from Taipei to Shenzhen… I got cut twice in line at the restroom because I was the only person waiting in line. Anyone coming in will go in front of me and wait right in front of the stall that has the person coming out. Culture shock: you snooze you lose.
On our train ride to the city, we were looking up things to eat, and I said something like I want to eat! And he said “again??” and I got upset at that. When we got to the Airbnb, he ate some pastry we bought but didn’t have the capacity to eat. I thought, “why are you eating a pastry when we could be eating local food. What are you doing in Asia, people come here to eat”. He also commented on the Airbnb saying, it always looks nicer in the photos- which is a valid point because I did agree it wasn’t the best, but it made me feel bad at the time. I accused him of “not letting me eat” because we ate lounge food, or pastries instead of eating local food. I guess I was just being pissy and moody and extra sensitive. We went to Taipei 101 and he had Starbucks reserve for the first time. We went to the top of the tower and got to experience the observatory. For dinner, we went to eat at a fancy hot pot place I ate at with my friends back when I studied abroad there. I didn’t expect it to be so expensive, but the bill came out to be $120. A little into the meal, he said something along the lines of “I think you don’t know what you like to eat either” and that I only chose this restaurant because my foodie friend influenced me to. I got defensive because I felt like he wasn’t listening to anything I was saying – it was true that my foodie friend reminded me of this place and that I do value his opinions, but to imply that I only wanted to come here because my friend told me to angered me. I wanted to go back to a nice place that I’ve been to 5 years before. Had I known dinner would have cost that much, I wouldn’t have gone. Anyway, we argued through dinner and I couldn’t enjoy my meal as much. We were the last ones at the restaurant and I paid for the meal because I wanted to take responsibility for the cost. We went to the nearby night market after that. Whatever we were arguing about, he wanted to look at my text messages as proof of something, but once he saw my texts, he realized he was wrong. He was annoyed at himself the rest of the night and wasn’t in a good mood. Fighting with him felt different than fighting with David. Because even though we were arguing, I felt like we were still together and that he wouldn’t leave me. He wouldn’t emotionally shut down to the point where he would ignore me or walk away. Even though we were both in a bad mood, we still stuck close (maybe because we were in a foreign land), and I still felt secure in us. We went back to the Airbnb, where he worked on some applications for residency. It was like he couldn’t concentrate… it was the first time I saw him when he needed time alone/to himself. I left him alone, and then cuddled him later in bed.
The next morning, he was acting lovey and cuddly, more so than usual. He said it was his way of saying sorry. I had more to say… and he said guys can’t win with females, because they have ammo from way back when lol. But anyway, I asked for a full apology and it was fine after that. We started our day kinda late, but it was okay because we were both already really exhausted from traveling/walking everywhere and could use the rest. We went to eat Chun Shui Tang for breakfast, which was a highlight of the trip too. Chun Shui Tang supposedly “invented” boba, but I just recently learned of it. We had beef noodle soup and fried chicken, and jasmine tea with pearl. Everything was amazing. Afterwards, we went to Yangmingshan, the national park. The first stop was really nice and pretty. We had an impromptu picnic. The second stop- the main one with the cattle and grasslands—was filled with fog, so we couldn’t see anything. After that, we went to the same night market as the night before and had a better experience. It was a holiday of some sort so there was a parade and firecrackers. We also saw gogo dancers on moving cars. The dan dan mian we had was also excellent. We waited in a semi line for this sausage rice thing at a stall which a “michellin star guide”. It was my first time having it so it was interesting- good to try but wouldn’t get again. We went back home after and considered going clubbing, but was like nah- since neither of us had clubbing appropriate shoes. We went to eat xiaolongbao instead. In hindsight, I probably focused too much on food, and we should have racked up the energy to do some nightlife lol.
Our last day, we woke up kinda late, because I felt like my period was gonna come soon and therefore I was extra tired. We got ready to check out and left our luggages at Taipei main station, where we would have to go for the airport. Right below our Airbnb is a dance studio (ballet). They had pictures of all the girls in the class on the wall, and they had one special ed/down syndrome class. Matt described it as “little girls under us” which I thought was funny and made fun of him for. When we were leaving, there was a girl with down syndrome waiting there, so that was nice to see. Very independent. Memory in Tokyo: a little girl (~5 years old) standing next to Matt on the bus, and yelling out: hey stop the bus! It’s my stop! Also another memory from Taipei going to Yangmingshan: a lady yells at the bus driver saying why didn’t he stop the bus when she pressed the button 3 stops ago! (why she didn’t voice anything until after 3 stops later, don’t ask me). We went back to Willbeck coffee shop which had this really good sesame coffee latte (something I’ll miss). Then we went to this niuroumian place in an alleyway we saw that had a long queue. We waited in line and then were guided to sit down in front of another Asian American couple. We shared a table with them and sat directly in front of them. “this is intimate,” Matt said. The girl was like where are you guys from? To start conversation. Later we found out that they are both starting residencies too- basically I had lunch with 3 doctors lol. Matt was really good at talking to them and made them laugh, and I would just say something here and there but keep quiet the rest of the time. After they left, it was interesting to hear what he said about our interaction. We both forgot their names. He said the guy is good at bringing up a topic and the girl talks about it and finishes it. He said I mainly looked down and said something every 5 minutes lol. He said I was mostly focused on the food and the others were more half and half. But he admitted that he didn’t know what he ate afterwards. That was something I used to tell him when we first started dating, to stop talking while eating so he can taste the food.
So to the airport we went. Last stop Shenzhen for a layover before heading back to LA. When we got to the check in point, the guy nonchalantly told me: you have two problems. 1. The flight is going to be delayed so you will most likely miss your connecting flight. 2. You don’t have a Chinese visa so you might not be able to leave China. And Matt was like uhh those are pretty big problems no? So I was freaking out a little. Matt told me to relax, and that it’s coming from him (I’m usually the more relaxed one). Matt had a flight to Kunming from Shenzhen the next morning at 7am, so I thought if I missed my flight, at least we would be able to spend the night together.
So we stayed at the Taipei airport lounging for a few hours. The niuroumian they had there was actually really great. Walking into the lounge, it was like walking into a restaurant. That’s Taipei for you. Matt stuffed himself per usual and I ate a little bit. I ended up drinking like 4 glasses of red wine because I was stressed out about the flight situation. I was already pissed at Chinese people for them cutting me in line and being “rude” (culture shock), and horror stories from friends about going through China’s airport didn’t help. Matt took the subject seriously too, and told me to try to find nice looking customs people to talk to. He kept saying how Chinese people fear the government. But he also told me to relax. Drinking while watching music videos was fun. I was a little tipsy going on the flight. When we boarded the airplane, Matt noted how the airplane is part of the Boeing 737 Max line that crashed. I was like what the fuck. What else can go wrong. The flight was like 95% Chinese people with like 2 white people. We later found out that the pilot was also white (when he made the announcements). We were both like, thank goodness there are white people on this plane. I felt more safe.
Contrary to my expectations of it going to be a bad/scary experience, the Chinese people were actually really friendly and helpful. As our group of plane people entered the airport, there were two girls who shouted “who’s going to Kunming tomorrow morning?” so they had a plan of action for Matt already, who they were going to hook up with a hotel for the night. They also knew about me who had a connecting flight. They helped me get a temporary visa and I went through the airport no problem. They told me to hurry up and check in upstairs and said Matt can retrieve my luggage and bring it up to me later.
Takeaways from the trip:
He mentioned how I do stuff he doesn’t like either but he just lets it go and doesn’t point them out. Whereas I’m nitpicky and point out the stuff I don’t like. He then feels that he’s always in the wrong/can’t do anything right. I think this was a problem in my past relationship too- my perfectionism. One thing he said that stood out was that I hold him to a really high standard. And it’s true. He says I respect my friends more than I do him. That if my friends act a certain way, I can always justify it and I’ll be on their side. But I have trouble doing that for him. Which is another thing I think is true in relationships too. Because I don’t see my friends as often, or their lifestyle/decisions don’t affect mine as much, I can easily be more supportive. I can let things go more easily because we aren’t as very intimate. That’s something I will work on doing.
And our pride- we both want to be right, but in reality, we are both right to an extent. Towards the end of the trip, I realized that what he says is right too, and it seemed he realized what I mean as well. We are both stubborn and forget to be kind over being right.
Anyway, this trip was stressful, the way it was planned wasn’t the best. We only had one full day in each city and maybe at least 30% of the trip itself was traveling/going to and from airports. That put pressure on that one full day being going well. Since I’ve been to Tokyo and Taipei before, I didn’t experience that many new things, so I do want to go somewhere new next time. And that was also my bad, because I wasn’t as open minded to the other countries and I thought it would be nice to be with him to experience his “first” in Asia (outside of China).
They say traveling with someone is like getting a taste of what it’s like being married to them. Even though we got on each other’s nerves and traveling was a struggle at times, we’re still there for each other at the end of the day. I hope, at least. Saying bye to him in China was sad, as he is staying in Asia for an additional 11 days while I’m back in LA. It was hard going from sleeping together for 6 nights straight to not, especially when struggling with jetlag- you just want some love. LDR is definitely harder when your SO is halfway around the world, and there are only a few hours in a day when your times match up. It’ll be hard saying bye to him when he leaves for NY. Maybe I’m needy, but it already sucks not being able to talk to him normally for 3 days now.
Before our trip ended, he kept saying “our trip is ending soon…” and he is planning out the remaining weekends he has with me. He wanted to do Seattle the weekend he gets back, but I said it was too rushed and that he will be jetlagged. So it made me sad that after he leaves for NY, our relationship will never be the same. Because I’m certain his workload will be very hectic and it will remain hectic for at least 3+ years. And that made me realize I really don’t treat him with the same respect as I did when we first started going out. That I’m becoming “comfortable” with him/taking him for granted. So I’ll just be mindful of that in the future. To remind myself to think big picture instead of narrowing down on details.
