Cyclone Alfred: the latest on LGBTQIA+ services, venues

As Tropical Cyclone Alfred continues to move towards the coast, QNews has the latest on disruptions to LGBTQIA+ services and venues in South East Queensland and Northern NSW.

At time of writing (8.30am AEST Thursday 6 March) Alfred was located 285 kilometres east of Brisbane and 260 kilometres east northeast of the Gold Coast.

At this stage, the category 2 system is set to cross the coast somewhere between Maroochydore and Coolangatta on late Friday or early Saturday.

In addition to destructive winds, there are fears Alfred will bring life-threatening flash flooding, major riverine flooding and tidal inundation.

A tropical cyclone warning is current for all communities between Double Island Point in Queensland and Grafton in NSW – including Brisbane, the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast, Byron Bay and Ballina but not including Grafton.

LGBTQIA+ services, organisations and venues are responding in a range of ways, including temporary closures and service delivery changes.

The Brisbane (Meanjin) and Sunshine Coast (Naamba) offices of Queensland’s peak LGBTQIA+ health and wellbeing organisation, QC, were closed yesterday and will remain closed today.

“Staff are working remotely,” QC said on its website. “We will reassess for Friday.”

Medical and mental health appointments have been moved to telehealth.

Volunteer activities and social events were called off yesterday and again today.

The Gayawur Rainbow service, for LGBTQIA+ Brotherboy and Sistergirl communities, remains accessible online at www.qc.org.au/gayawur and by phone on 1800 429 298.

Only the Cairns (Gimuy) and Townsville (Gurambilbarra) offices of Gayawur Rainbow remain open for in-person visits.

Queensland Positive People (QPP)

“Our QPP office in Brisbane is closed due to the risk associated with Tropical Cyclone Alfred. QPP team members will be working remotely (where able) during normal hours,” QPP has advised.

“Our RAPID clinic is closed until Tuesday 11th March, or until safe.”

The organisation said people living with HIV may be able to access QPP’s Emergency Treatment Fund, including help with payments for medications.

“Your doctor, nurse or other staff member at your GP, s100 prescriber, pharmacy or sexual health service needs to make this application on your behalf,” they said.

This weekend’s QPP social groups in Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Hervey Bay, the Sunshine Coast and Toowoomba have been cancelled. For enquiries about events, QPP advised clients to email events@qpp.org.au.

West End queer venue Come To Daddy has temporarily closed due to the weather and the venue’s location within in a flood zone.

Come to Daddy has been sandbagged due to the possibility of the nearby Brisbane River flooding and inundating the premises.

“Daddy is wrapped and ready for whatever tries to penetrate,” the venue announced on social media.

“We will be closed … through to Saturday morning, when we will assess if we can get up and operational again.”

On Tuesday, Come to Daddy’s owner Billerwell Daye issued an SOS for help in preparing the venue for Alfred’s onslaught.

Community members answered the call, providing sandbags and other assistance.

“Thank you to everyone, we got a decent amount of sandbags. All help is greatly appreciated,” Daye told QNews.

Hairy Mary’s

Gold Coast venue Hairy Mary’s was closed yesterday due to the weather situation and will be closed again today.

The venue advises that information on Friday, Saturday and Sunday opening hours is “to be announced”.

The Sportsman Hotel

The Sportsman Hotel, AKA Sporties, remains open at this stage. However all entertainment, such as drag shows, is cancelled for today and tomorrow.

The kitchen closed after last service yesterday, with the venue stating on Facebook that it hoped to reopen the kitchen on Friday night.

The Wickham

The Wickham Hotel in Fortitude Valley was operating under normal trading hours at time of writing, however the venue announced: “Due to the cyclone, we are cancelling our shows this weekend.”

The Beat

The Beat Megaclub in Fortitude Valley was closed yesterday and is closed again today.

“The safety of our patrons, performers and staff comes first and we’ll reassess the situation on Friday with another update,” the club posted on its Instagram account.

3. Has there been time where Stanley does something bad but people just assumed it's jerk Ford pretending to be Stan or that Stan was pressured into helping jerk Ford? I need to know who Filbrick blames for the missing golden chain in the lost legend comic

4. We're there like full-blown panic for the coast guard, the navy, the fishermen, the pirate, and the marine life? Because "oh God he's in the seas, HE'S IN THE SEAS"

In High School, people told Crampelter to leave Stanford Pines alone; that even though he wasn't as big as his brother, he still could and would hurt you in ways you never thought possible.

Believe it or not, in the AU Stan was a good student. Teachers realized early on that the only way to keep Jerk Ford somewhat behaved was to keep his twin with him, because he was the only person he wasn't a jerk to and could actually talk him down.

So Stanley got a lot of extra help and support from the school and even his parents for his learning needs to be met, so he and Jerk Ford could share as many classes as possible throughout their school years.

Obviously they didn't share every single class because they still had differing interests (Jerk Ford taking robotics while Stan was a theatre kid) and Jerk Ford was a Math and Science prodigy, but they were usually in the same core classes.

Jerk Ford was indefinitely banned from detention in his Freshman year because if he was in detention, you bet whoever the teacher or supervisor was wasn't going to be there.

Because of how catastrophically bad Jerk Ford was, nothing Stanley did in comparison could ever look that bad.

Stanley took the gold chain? That same week, he and Jerk Ford tried opening a lemonade stand only for the Sibling brothers to do the same thing and take all of their business (not that they got a lot because everyone in Glass Shard Beach stayed clear of Jerk Ford even at the tender age of twelve).

And what happens? Well, Jerk Ford said or did something because the Sibling brothers stand was shut down by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and also the f***ing FBI showed up; Ascot and Dickie had to wear ankle monitors all summer.

Stanley wouldn't let Jerk Ford take the fall for something he did, however, so he'd own up to it. He'd be punished like a normal kid, none of that 'hold an extra Stan sign' stuff.
