Read: What Makes the Sky Blue
I don't play gacha games (anymore), but I do play fighting games, and Granblue Versus has become the one I'm most comfy with. So it wasn't a huge leap that when we did a groupchat bookclub exchange (my pick was, of course, the Ulster cycle), the thing my pals picked for me to read was (youtube recordings of) the gay angels plot from the mobile game itself; I'm happy to learn more about these guys.
And I think I learned something really valuable from it, which is that I need to have sex with Michael the primarch of fire immediately.
Okay, okay, okay. You clicked the readmore. You get to find out that I got Got.
Love is a mass of contradictions, Cilius...
Waaah.
Ahem. Overall, going from parts 1 to 3, you can definitely see them getting more comfortable doing big fantasy storytelling in this medium. The plot of 1 is pretty basic and revolves around repeated RPG battles (but: there's a depressed gayboy in there), then by 3 it's got a lot more of a distinct and compelling structure. And by the gods we can make slash.jpeg put in the work.
Sandalphon is, to no-one's surprise, an incredible character. I'm used to anime/tokusatsu/game/etc. tsundere antiheroes who play pretty close to type--I enjoy them--but whenever I expect him to do Vegeta-alike line like that, they give him something more distinct and he reveals himself as really compelling. (And of course the last Lucifer dream scene in 3...trying to think of more things to say so he can stay for a few more seconds...weh.)
I joked about Michael but I am extremely weak for a noble warrior type lady and I'm fantasy leotard lover 9000. And I'm pleasantly surprised by how relevant and impressive the primarchs continued to be! Being introduced as a pre-existing thing in 1 I expected them to be completely overshadowed by the new big boys, but they remained a consistent benchmark for Mighty Power and such throughout.
If I have one big negative about all of this, and frankly about GBF in general, it's that you're a silent protagonist except for a few key lines, right, so your "such a core cast that they're basically an extension of the player and say Main Character Dialogue in your place" consists of your bestie and your mascot, and your bestie is really shy, so like 50% of the dialogue in the game by volume is Vyrn's. And I don't hate a funny little creature on principle, but he kinda sucks the gravitas away, and there are a lot of characters I'd much rather hear saying that stuff! Katalina is right there.
I do always think it's interesting to see modern fantasy works, which engage with both the fantasy genre and ideas from past eras from a certain remove. Both coming from a culture that isn't predominantly monotheist, and just generally in our modern more secular age, you get these settings where despite the creator gods/angels/etc being explicitly real they don't really do much in the way of miracles and helping their believers, and mostly just kind of Observe (or sometimes are boss fights). This isn't really a criticism (I don't have strong religious feelings myself), just an interesting trend in modern fantasy writing.
Ughhhhh I can't put it off any longer, can I.
Belial got me, sorry, sorry, I'm trying to fix it. I was already in the zone of "I mean he needs to die but I'd fuck him first", but then...well...if you know me, you know I go crazy for an over-devoted lieutenant Enduring for a long time. And well, heh. The consequences of me encountering Soifon at an impressionable age are immense.
I do also just think it's awesome he like, fully dresses and acts like a Promiscuous Fanservice Slut (woman) type character. Normally "horny man character" denotes something completely different but he's full-on with it. He'll suck you in a peculiar and interesting way.
(Love is a mass of contradictions...love...)
Fantastic voice acting too. By the way check out the demolishing somebody in the groupchat got when they claimed he was one of the least fuckable characters in the game.
The other thing I've been chewing on is, since I've been making them read the Ulster cycle in exchange, the similarities between the Astrals and the Tuatha De Danann...it honestly might have even have caused me to my write my own Tuatha-De-alike people in my Gordian Cycle story as a bit Astral-like...but maybe I'll talk about that in posts on that story.
The named two we meet are really funny anyway. Faa making a serene male milf clone of himself (and yes, the reveal in 3 makes this fairly gender) that is way stronger than him and also noble enough that it'll easily kill him for his various evil deeds, and he foresees this, and does absolutely nothing to prevent it, but just gives a wheedling 'and another thing...' as he's dying. Stupid ass. And Beelzebub first multiverse-tier fraud let's goooooo What Does He Even Do
Well, that was a lot, but I did also Get my friends with Cu Chulainn, so fair's fair. Add Therese to Versus OK thanks

Duuuude
I was basically constantly crying throughout the And You event
Sure, I was a bit suspicious of Orologia at first, but then they're so genuine and they really just want what's best for us and to minimize suffering and there went the waterworks and then throughout all the different timelines, because I felt so, so bad for them
And oh god, when they were dying
I was physically sobbing when we fought them, in genuine despair and when the Singularity changed the option I had to pause because I was weeping because I was so happy and relieved
I don't usually cry at Gbf events but this one just really destroyed me, it's so good
SAAAAAME SAME SAME SAME!!!!
It's been a long while since i have been ACTUALLY DEVASTATED by a granblue event. I was in SHAMBLE for the whole duration of the event and weeping all my way through it. What a feat.
I remember when we first started to hear about Orologia in like, their journal appearance and then mentions here and there and it was just... what is up with them? and then we got the trailer for the anni and somehow they looked soooo sus in it.
We went in thinking "Logia is def going to be sus" and then before the Prologue is even over you have Logia talk about how they'd do anything to protect you and then have their voice break as they're holding you as a child in their arms because you're so warm and tiny and it's like. oh. oh they love this child. Like, they decided to parent this child. Forever. and from this point forward this was the waterworks, and it got worse at every step.
Having to watch Logia trying so hard to be a good parent to MC. Also seeing how they manipulated fate because they didn't want us to be lonely by having Seox join us early. And then. And then having to watch them constantly locked in a loop in which no matter what, MC dies, and Logia is devastated. And Logia isn't devastated because "without the Singularity the world could turn bad" but because "tHIS IS MY BABY STOP HURTING MY BABY" and i'm just weeping all the tears from my body.
And the fact that they noticed eventually that everything they did to make MC's life easier was the reason MC kept dying... and that they still stubborningly kept trying because they didn't want to sacrifice MC's happiness. That they wanted SO HARD to find another way. One way to keep MC happy AND be by their side AND have them survive. and they couldn't have all three. and they still tried. over and over and over again.
by the end of the first part i was a total mess and i knew for a fact i'd die for Logia, and the set up that Logia was likely to die by the end of the event was the most terrifying thing of all time. I still can't recover from the rollercoaster of emotion.
And then... the final fight. How everything was set up for us to kill them. and the visual representation of fate forcing itself on us by giving us a single choice: killing them. And us proving that we can challenge fate. That we can change what's written. That we can save them.
I JUSTTTT AM NEVER RECOVERING. The event managed to make us love Logia so easily and then threatened to take them away and it was the most emotionally tortured i've been by granblue.
I feel that like, esp with how much emphasis there was on "MC's father has abandoned us and MC is suffering from that and desperately wants to find their father again" just sets up so well, imo, this desire for MC to have a family. Like. Personally i know i get choked up everytime they mention MC is missing their father or wondering why they've been abandonned. So to see someone... So. SO dedicated in being a parent to MC. SO unwilling to abandon MC. is just breaking me. i'm in shamble.
Orologia best character ever i would do anything for them. Glad to see they had their effect on everyone bc man. MAN!
Anyway always bringing it back bc it's killing me but did you see the extra Logia art they shared during one of the recent festival
im never recovering. ever. god "and you" was such a fantastic event man.
#ue ue ue ue ue#ichareply#anonymous#ichafantalks gbf#ichablogging 9thanni#also i submitted Logia to a best dad contest i will need yall to back me up when the contest will be up#ofc Logia is Dad (gender neutral) but still. we need to defend the parent of all time.
